e are happy to share our Holiday Digital Issue of Arizona Golf Insider. First in line is the 20th-year Anniversary of We-KoPa Golf Club and their significant upgrades in facilities to celebrate. Arizona has so many excellent resorts and courses, and when one like We-KoPa takes steps to improve its property, that is newsworthy of celebrating. For golf history buffs, we have a Pub Quiz for you on Scotland, Championships and curiosities. The answers will put your knowledge of the history of golf and Scotland at the head of the class, thanks to AGF board member Josh Evenson. Follow that with our first installment of “Robin’s Rules of Order (for golf )” and you’ll enjoy a bit more education in the Rules. I see many exciting golf opportunities for all of us in the coming year. As with all positive opportunities, there are challenges as well. The demand for golf is at a very high level but with the higher costs associated with demand. Golfers here have been blessed with excellent playing conditions in spite of increasing scarcity of water resources. The good news is that Arizona superintendents’ efficiencies are well-ahead of any other industrial use, ac-

LONGTIME AGA EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR ED GOWAN ANNOUNCES RETIREMENT IN FEBRUARY 2022 by David Bataller AZ Golf Insider Editor in Chief
The Arizona Golf Association earlier this month announced the retirement of longtime Executive Director Ed Gowan, effective February 2022. After 36 years at the helm of the AGA, he has decided the time is right to pass along the reins to one of the premier amateur golf associations in the country. “I’ve spent exactly one half of my life in this position,” said Gowan. “I’m very proud of what Arizona Golf has become thanks to many, many outstanding employees and board members. Someone in this position is only as good as those supporting him, and I thank the members of Arizona Golf for the privilege.” Gowan has served in his current role since June 1985, when the AGA had a staff of two people serving 120 clubs and 23,000 members throughout the Grand Canyon State. Fast forward to the present, and Gowan is set to leave his post having increased staffing to 23 employees serving more than 600 clubs and more than 90,000 members. In addition to adding dozens of events to the AGA’s annual calendar, Gowan brought the USGA’s GHIN Handicap and Course Rating Systems to Arizona’s golfers. A noted Rules of Golf

expert, he has officiated at 35 US Opens, 119 USGA Championships, the Masters and dozens of other international events, both professional and amateur. He is also a Founder of the Arizona Golf Foundation, the charitable arm of the AGA, and is the Co-Founder of the Patriot All-America Invitational collegiate golf showcase. “The Arizona Golf Association would not be what it is today without the leadership, expertise, and guidance by Ed Gowan over the past 36 years, more than one-third of its existence,” said Bob McNichols, AGA Executive Committee President. “Ed’s accomplishments, and dedication to the game of golf in ‘The State of Golf’ is unparalleled elsewhere.” Prior to his arrival in Arizona, Gowan spent eight years with the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA), where he oversaw operations of more than 30 tournaments worldwide for his final four years, including championships in Japan, Malaysia, Philippines, Ireland and England. Gowan’s golf life includes two terms as pres-
ident of the International Association of Golf Administrators (IAGA), golf course renovation consulting and project management around the world, and group golf-travel management. He is a member of Desert Forest Golf Club in Carefree, Ariz., a member of the Royal & Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews, a member of the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America (GCSAA), a member of numerous USGA Committees and as a published golf writer, a member of the Golf Writers Association of America since 1973. An accomplished player, Gowan has also won numerous regional golf tournaments.
36 years, we owe our success as a state association to the CEO who made it all happen: Ed Gowan,” added McNichols. “It has been a privilege and pleasure to work with this ultimate professional who will be missed by all in the AGA and always revered in the annals of its’ history.”

20 THINGS WE LOVE ABOUT WE-KO-PA GOLF CLUB by Anthony R. Muñoz For the AZ Golf Insider
We-Ko-Pa Golf Club will celebrate its 20th anniversary this December, and over the course of two decades as one of Arizona’s most incredible golf experiences, We-Ko-Pa has hosted hundreds of thousands of golfers from all over the world and racked up some impressive awards and accolades. Here are 20 things that make We-Ko-Pa Arizona’s Ultimate Golf Experience. 1. The Sound of Silence One of the first things players notice when they set foot on either one of We-Ko-Pa’s outstanding courses is the noise – or lack thereof. Many great tracks in Arizona are lined with homes, businesses or roads and the accompanying hustle and bustle, but not at We-Ko-Pa. The only noise players will hear are the natural sounds of the Sonoran Desert, and the only roads are cart paths.
2. 36-Hole Package No need to pick and choose between WeKo-Pa’s two incredible tracks. Pick up the 36-hole package and play both Cholla and Saguaro for one low price. 3. Coore/Crenshaw Design We-Ko-Pa’s second course, Saguaro, was designed by the world-renowned architect duo Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw. Their minimalist design philosophy fits perfectly into the natural landscapes which features huge elevation changes, deep swells, natural bunkers which flow seamlessly into the desert. Players will find a plaque with a quote from the duo on the first tee “This old boney ground has some sting to it.” 4. Scott Miller Design Cholla – We-Ko-Pa’s first course – embodies some of architect Scott Miller’s favorite design traits. There’s plenty of room to play, trouble is well defined and not overly penalizing and each shot presents a clear risk/reward opportunity.
5. Different Strokes for Different Folks Many 36-hole properties have very similar layouts, but We-Ko-Pa’s two courses feature distinct differences not commonly found in Arizona. Cholla is more “traditional desert golf” with forced carries and clear landing areas while its counterpart Saguaro represents a more “links style” approach to the game.
view of Red Mountain combined with a great whiskey cocktail are sure to warm you up quickly. 10. Wild Animals in Full View Few players, if any, out at We-Ko-Pa go an entire round without seeing some of the desert’s most recognizable creatures. From coyotes seeking shade to roadrunners speeding through the fairways and even a squadron of javalina – yes, a squadron – We-Ko-Pa is a living, breathing ecosystem full of nature’s wonders. 11. Native plants Untouched for Centuries The noble and iconic Saguaro – which only grows right here in the Sonoran Desert – and the more than 30 different species of cholla are just a few of the thousands of different native plants unique to We-Ko-Pa and the surrounding area. 12. Aces at We-Ko-Pa Over the course of 20 years, hundreds of players have carded an ace The 8th hole on the Cholla Course at We-Ko-Pa Golf Club winds through the Sonoran on either course at We-Ko-Pa Golf Desert, a downhill dogleg-right requiring two accurate shots for a chance at eagle. Award-Winning Golf Shop uninterrupted views of the majestic Four Peaks Mountain Range and is the ultimate golf test. We-Ko-Pa’s extraordinary, Golden Nugget award winning golf shop blends seamlessly into 7. And Looking back from the elevated green showcases amazing views of the surrounding Sonoran Desert. 8. We-Ko-Pa Grille The We-Ko-Pa Grille isn’t your normal golf course eatery. Are traditional menu items like burgers and dogs available? Sure, if you’re into that sort of thing. But if you want to branch out into finer fare like tropical pulled pork sandwiches, artisan tacos, steak frites and even margherita pizza. 9. Patio Living In the summer, We-Ko-Pa’s award-winning covered patio offers a reprieve from the dog days before or after your round. The patio between the We-Ko-Pa Grille and the Clubhouse offers players and diners a In the winter, heaters and a firepit in full comfortable dining experience regardless of the season.
14. We-Ko-Pa Casino Resort Just a driver and a 9-iron from We-Ko-Pa Golf Club is the all-new We-Ko-Pa Casino Resort featuring AAA Four-Diamond accommodations, excellent eateries and – of course – Vegas-style gaming action. 15. Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation We-Ko-Pa Golf Club is owned and operated by the Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation who weave their rich history and tradition into all of their various enterprises including Fort McDowell Adventures – a true desert excursion experience. 16. Spring Training Proximity We-Ko-Pa is less than 30 minutes from five different Spring Training facilities including Sloan Park (Cubs), Salt River Fields (Rockies/Diamondbacks), Hohokam Stadium (Athletics), Tempe Diablo Stadium (Angels) and Scottsdale Stadium (Giants). 17. Numerous Awards and Accolades We-Ko-Pa Golf Club has been showered with awards and accolades over the years including numerous “No. 1 in Arizona” rankings from various legacy golf publications.
18. Unbelievable Turf Conditions Turf conditioning at We-Ko-Pa is always superb thanks to an exceptional maintenance staff and incredible attention to detail. 19. Drivable Par-4s Arguably one of the most fun aspects of golf is the drivable par-4. We-Ko-Pa features two true risk-reward par-4s – Saguaro No. 2 and Cholla No. 15 where birdie opportunities are plenty. 20. World-Class Dining Ember – We-Ko-Pa’s take on fine dining – features some of the best steak and chops around and recently captured the coveted Wine Spectator “Best of Award of Excellence” for their superior wine selection, a combination diners can’t help but enjoy. BONUS: Unbelievable Views from Every Hole Due to the unincumbered nature of the property itself, all 36 holes at We-Ko-Pa Golf Club feature stunning views of the Four Peaks mountains – for which We-Ko-Pa is named – and Red Mountain, one of Arizona’s most recognizable natural landmarks.
The double-dogleg 2nd hole of the Cholla Course at We-Ko-Pa Golf Club features a semi-blind tee shot. But spectacular views of Red Mountain in the distance are a constant as players navigate the first of two long par-5 tests on the front nine.

Pub Quiz: The Home of Golf Edition by Joshua C. Evenson Contributor to AZ Golf Insider
The early days of golf were solely a Scottish pastime. Then came the Englishmen. Followed by a few Europeans, and the Americans. Success within the game largely followed the same course. While names like Hogan, Jones and Ouimet are at the forefront of the arrival of American success within golf, there are others such as Macdonald, McDermott and others who laid the foundation. As part of larger series for the Arizona Golf Insider print edition, I am attempting to recount the history of golf in Scotland all the way through to the 150th play of The Open Championship in 2022 on the Old Course at St Andrews. ANSWERS
President George H.W. Bush played much of his golf at a Walter Travis-designed course: Cape Arundel in Kennebunkport, Maine.
1. John McDermott of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Mr. McDermott was a formidable golfer. He was the first American to win the U.S. Open, first in 1911 at Chicago Golf Club and then in 1912 at Country Club of Buffalo.
7. Frederick Guthrie Tait. He was one of the first sons of St Andrews golf. Though brief, his mark on early golf is legendary. I suggest reading his biography F.G. Tait: A Record by J.L. Low.
2. Walter Hagen of Rochester, New York. Winner of eleven majors, he was the most dominant American player until the arrival of Bobby Jones. He won The Open Championship four times (1922,1924, 1928, and 1929), twice at Royal St Georges’ (Sandwich), once at Royal Liverpool (Hoylake) and once at Muirfield. Like so many golfers, he found his way to a game as a caddie. And, he captained the first six Ryder Cup matches for U.S.A. 3. Jock Hutchinson. He was born in St Andrews, Kingdom of Fife, in 1884. His Open Championship was on his native home course: The Old Course of St Andrews. He also happens to be the last Scottish-born golfer to win The Open Championship on the Old Course at St Andrews. 4. Together, The Great Triumvirate dominated The Open Championship with 16 victories from 1894
8. Charles Blair Macdonald. Macdonald was, perhaps, the most instrumental single figure in establishing golf in America. A graduate of the University of St Andrews, he was a regular playing partner of Young Tom Morris and even had a locker in Old Tom’s shop. He won the first U.S. Amateur at Newport Country Club in 1895 and then went on to design at least nineteen of the most historic courses in America, including National Golf Links of America, Chicago Golf Club, and Yale University Golf Course. His co- architect was Seth Raynor one of the finest architects of all-time. 9. The Amateur Championship, Old Course at St Andrews The Open Championship, Royal Liverpool Golf Club U.S. Open, Interlachen Country Club
U.S. Amateur, Merion Golf Club 10. Four. Walter Hagen four times. Bobby Jones twice. Jim Barnes and Jock Hutchinson once each. 11. Bobby Jones. 1926 at Royal Lytham & St Annes. 1927 at St Andrews. 1930 at Royal Liverpool Golf Club. 12. Francis Ouimet in 1951. 13. The 11th hole, known as High Hole. 14. Harry Vardon. 15. 2023 will make the tenth time the Old Course at St Andrews has hosted the Walker Cup. Of the first nine events, GB&I have only won twice. 16. Bernard Darwin. He played Captain William C. Fownes Jr. founder and designer of Oakmont Country Club. He also won the 1910 U.S. Amateur at The Country Club at Brookline. Darwin was a direct descendent of Charles Darwin, and the first prolific golf writer, prior to the arrival of Herbert Warren Wind and Grantland Rice and O.B. Keeler of U.S.A. 17. H.J. Whigham of Tarbloton, Scotland. He won the U.S. Amateur in 1896 at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club and 1897 at Chicago Golf Club. He was Charles Blair Macdonald’s son-in-law, as well. Macdonald knew his father, who was a friend of his from St Andrews. Findlay S. Douglas in 1898 at Morris County Golf Club. He was a graduate of the University of St Andrews and a president of the United States Golf Association (USGA). 18. A1: In 1873, after the first twelve Opens were held at Prestwick.
20. A1: National Golf Links of America, founded by Charles Blair Macdonald. A2: The Old Course, St Andrews. It returns to St Andrews in 2023. Buy tickets now. 21. Bobby Jones in 1958. 22. The first match between Great Britain and Ireland against the U.S.A. was in 1921 at Gleneagles. 23. Jock Hutchinson. Bobby Jones. Denny Shute. Sam Snead. Tony Lema. Jack Nicklaus. John Daly. Tiger Woods. Zach Johnson. 24. Bobby Jones. Frank Stranahan. Dick Siderowf. 25. Captain Robert Gardner. Davidson Herron. Jimmy Johnston. Max Marston. Jack Neville. Francis Ouimet. George Rotan. Stacy Lewis won the 2013 Ricoh Women’s Open. Now known as the Women’s British Open 30. The 10th hole, named Bobby Jones. Why? Good question. I’m not sure it is known. The 10th hole is a superb par four which is connected to the eight green. 31. Tom Morris, after Old Tom for being Keeper of the Greens. It is the 18th hole, often called the ‘home hole.’
A2: The 150th Open will be played on Old Course, St Andrews for the 30th time.
32. The Road Hole. It is the 17th hole on the Old Course, well-known as being a perilous location for many golfers due to the Road Hole bunker.
19. The RMS Aquitania. They sailed from New York for the ten-day voyage to Southampton on May 23, 2021.
BONUS: (1) Chicago Golf Club, (2) Saint Andrew’s Golf Club, (3) The Country Club, (4) Newport Country Club and (5) Shinnecock Hills Golf Club.

Answers Incident 1: False - Player A has accidentally moved his ball in play and played from a wrong place, a breach of Rule 9.4 and Rule 14.7. As noted in the Clarification for Rule 1.3c(4), Player A gets a penalty of two strokes. Moving the ball in play and playing from a wrong place are related acts. Incident 2: True - As noted in Rule 12.2b(3), after a ball in a bunker is played and is outside the bunker, there are no restrictions regarding smoothing sand in the bunker even if the ball will be dropped in the bunker to take relief. Incident 3: True - Player A has proceeded as required by Rule 7.3. There is no requirement in the 2019 Rules to inform another player prior to marking and lifting for identification. Incident 4: False - Player A’s ball was moved by natural forces before the ball was marked, lifted, and replaced, therefore the ball did not own its original spot on the putting green.
