GUANGZHOU EVERGRANDE STADIUM
China has started construction on the world’s largest purpose-built football stadium in Guangzhou, China. Developed by Chinese Evergrande real estate group, the construction of the Guangzhou Evergrande Stadium began on April 2020 despite the COVID-19 pandemic and is planned to open by end of year 2022. The Guangzhou Evergrande stadium will be home to one of the Chinese Football Association’s Super League teams. Located adjacent to Guangzhou South Railway Station, the new stadium will include 100,000 seats – breaking the capacity record of Camp
Nou stadium in Spain, home to FC Barcelona. For the past 9 years, the Guangzhou Evergrande football team is accommodated in the
Tianhe Stadium that has a capacity of 60,000 seats.
Dubbed as "Lotus Flower Stadium", the lotus flower-shaped stadium is expected to cost around 12 billion yuan (US$1.7 billion) to complete, according to Evergrande Group.

Xu Jiayin, the Chairman of the Board of Directors of Evergrande Group, also actively participated in the project. Jiayin personally conceived the concept, modified the plan, and planned the business and format. The design was conceptualised by Hasan A. Syed, design principal at Gensler’s Shanghai office.
Expected to cover a total area of about 150,000 sqm, a total construction area is estimated to reach 300,000 sqm. Vice President of Evergrande Group Xia Haijun said in a statement: “The aim of the new stadium is to make an essential change and ameliorate Chinese football. Evergrande Stadium will become a new world-class landmark comparable to the Sydney Opera House and Burj Khalifa in Dubai, and an important symbol of Chinese football to the world.”
Moreover, Evergrande acknowledges the lack of modern football stadium infrastructure in China and plans to build additional three to five world-class professional football stadiums which have a capacity of 80,000 to 100,000 people across the country.
