02/ THESIS - THE SECULAR ACADEMY Semester 8 , B.Arch

B M S School of Architecture, Yelahanka

A United Theological Institute catering to Multiple religions in India in Kodaikanal, Tamil Nadu. The design mainly focus on Islam, Hinduism and Christianity along with a shared facility to provide knowledge about the other religions. The 39.32 acre s site is located on the outskirts of Kodaikanal. The institute will cater to theological courses that deals with both Undergraduated courses and Bridge courses that helps in people to preserve the morality in a modern and logical manner. The institute aims to attain codependency in the accomodation program and other common grounds to make people learn and adjust to one another. This can be a prototype or a model to the society for its secularistic behaviour. And can accommodate other indian religions in the future.

Portfolio_Azhar Mohamed Haneefa K P

/Why A Theological Institute? A country like india is recognised for its secularistic character amongst the world. Secularism in india is a positive, revolutionary and comprehensive concept which takes within its sweep all the communities in india. This concept is bound with all fundamental aspects including the constitution that helps in maintaining a lot of communities to live in peace. However in last couple of decades, the concept of secularism has been fading away due to several issues. Series of incidents since 1990’s in india have radically altered both reality and our imagination. There should be inspirations and examples that could show how this system can still fully function with this concept in a logical manner.

P23

/LOCATION Kodaikanal is a city in the hills of the Dindigul district in the state of Tamil Nadu, India. The city is known for its climate and view point and have been attracting tourists since 1700s. The mixed culture of Kodaikanal due to foriegn settlement helped the formation of a modern and secular mentality.

/ZONING The Accomodation, Library and Shared facilities are located at the centre of the site with all 3 institutes and their religious buildings happening on 3 corners of the site. Having a tree buffer in between all the institutes can increase the peace of mind and the accomodation gives an oppertunity to interact with each other and be easily accessible.

/ROAD LAYOUTS The shape of the road is dirived from cutting the contour sideways with the least slope making it convinient for both pedestrians and vehicular movements.

/DESIGN PROCESS The Institute is mainly divided into 2 blocks based on the gender. Each blocks are located on 2 different levels which allows enough privacy to access the Mosque buildings from both floors.

The layout design is derived from creating offsets of multiple circles to form an intersection of geometric patterns and then defined inside a square space.

The outside facade is derived from a Delauney Pattern supporting with a fabrication .

/MOSQUE The Roof design is derived from 1/4 of a Hemisphere with a vertical tilt of 7° for sunlight to enter the central shaft Archways ar eused to define the corridor space which gives the essence of a typical mosque space. PLAN

/TEMPLE DESIGN The Gopura was designed by overlapping multiple square rings placed one over the other with a gap of 200mm letting the light inside.

PLAN

The stone slabs are connected to one other using stone pin blocks grooving It into both the slabs above and below.

The whole temple is made out of exposed concrete and expose them to the rainy weather which helps the formation of a mossy appearance.

The design required a simple and yet intricate appearance since it demands to be a place for peace. SECTION

SECTION

Windows happening on the tappering wall can let light inside since the site has huge trees and lets less light inside. Trees which have to be cut on the site will be used for interiors and building ribs for the triangular vault.

/SEMINARY DESIGN Continuous roofing for seminary lets the design flow through the contour. The stepped down design helps tp play with the contour. Trees which have to be cut on the site will be used for interiors and building ribs for the triangular vault.

/DESIGN CONCEPT The building Itself is designed like TWO WINGS of a flying sea bird all in white .Two huge wings meet dynamically at the body of the sea bird which Is flat and has all the skylights.

Vyttila site context

The simplicity and purity of colour WHITE rides through the entire interiors with patches of warm colours to inspire your SPIRITS!

/LIGHT WEIGHT CONSTRUCTION Weight of the total building is only 25% percent of a normal building. The soil is so poor in strength with only an N-value of 1 or 2 even at the depth of 15 metres which will need friction piles of at least 35 metres depth. The lightweight concept allowed us to do shallow foundation with short sand piles and concrete belt. Proposed Site and surroundings

/NO BRICK, NO PLASTER, NO WOOD The building is done totally in steel sections, insulated panel walls, corrugated sheet roof with thin concrete topping. Services go within the panel thickness. Can stand very high levels of earthquake. Construction was very fast, clean without any mess since we avoided BRICK and PLASTER.
