At the very core of our mission is a commitment to serve the sick, injured and abused homeless animals who have no one else to care for and protect them. With your support, our Emergency Animal Medical Technicians (EAMTs)™ and Second Chance Animal Trauma Hospital™ are able to rescue and save the lives of thousands of animals each year. Thank you for making it possible to give pets like Gus, Squirrel and Hatchi a second chance at life.

Thanks to you, the Arizona Humane Society has implemented innovative programs like our Parvo Puppy ICU, Kitten Nursery, Bottle Baby Kitten ICU, Expanded Trap-Neuter-Return, Working Cat program, kennel enrichment and specialized feline programs. Even today, many shelters in the United States consider these animals “untreatable.” A turning point in animal welfare in the Valley has been the belief that these “untreatable” animals deserve a chance at leading-edge treatment and healing. Your support has raised the bar and redefined compassion for animals in Maricopa County. 9

AHS’ Pet Resource Center is a call center comprised of trained, compassionate Customer Experience Agents who provide proactive solutions, resources and alternatives to struggling pet owners in an effort to keep more pets in homes and out of shelters. The Pet Resource Center is the keystone of reducing shelter intake and euthanasia. Call volume is expected to approach nearly 100,000 calls next year, and thanks to generous grant funding by the Nina Mason Pulliam Charitable Trust to expand the Pet Resource Center’s capacity, we will continue to provide the best solution for pets and people as we make our community a better place for animals. Families facing crisis turned to AHS. With your gifts, we were able to keep family members, both human and animal, together through programs such as: •

Sandy walked in and immediately sprawled on Kathy’s couch, in Kathy’s spot, breaking strict medical orders not climb and breaking Kathy’s longstanding house rules barring dogs from furniture. No two stories of pets are alike. The below illustration represents just one pet’s journey, and as the leading champion for animals and their well-being, AHS will go wherever necessary – from the tightest crawlspaces to the most neglectful homes to the highest courtrooms – to seek justice for animals. Once home to the “second worst pet overpopulation crisis in the United States,” Maricopa County is now ground zero for the nation’s most innovative work with homeless animals and pet owners in need.

E D D I SO N H E R E ! I’m the Valley’s goofiest (and most adorable) ferret and a member of AHS’ Community Engagement department’s Education Pets team. Along with my buddies Edgar, a rabbit, and rats Ralph and Alfredo, we venture out to camps, workshops, scout programs, birthday parties and classroom programs to teach kids about responsible pet ownership. This year, we piloted a STEM-based program with Washington Elementary School District that focused on veterinary medicine and animal science. Sometimes we even get to watch children read to our shelter dogs so they can practice their reading skills while helping enrich our pets’ lives. So cool! My team and I love helping to inspire empathy and teach children compassion and respect for animals.

In 2016, the following donors made gifts of $1,000 or more to save thousands of unwanted animals from suffering on our streets.
