We drew from these enchanted places for a Holiday collection that’s a perfect juxtaposition of soft and bold, urban and pastoral, a collection that’s as uncommonly cool and rebelliously sexy in the misty mountains as it is back on your home turf. Stay warm in cozy cotton. Stay daring in of-the-moment prints. From the city streets to the high peaks, we’ve got you covered.

Match Made THERE’S NO WRONG WAY TO WEAR OUR SOCKS, but we’ve got a few ideas on how to do it right. That’s why we created Match Made, a visual primer on all of the supremely cool ways to pair our sock styles with any shoe. Each season we team up with a renowned stylist to create a guideline for all of the unexpected ways you can wear Instance. For Holiday 2014, we tapped Shandi Alexander, who has a penchant for defying the style status quo by playfully mixing, matching, and layering pattern and color. “What’s awesome about fashion is that there are no rules,” she says. “I think of the socks as the outfit and the clothes as the accessories.”

PILE IT ON Get a little greedy and wear more of your socks at once by mastering Alexander’s trademark layering look, an irreverent way to add depth and interest to your outfit. “I like the energy and play that can come from putting a few contrasting layers together,” says Alexander. She suggests looking for a common thread to tie it all of your socks together, or letting a vibrant neon sock peek out over the band of a patterned style. Layer a shorter mid sock over a knee-high for the most bang for you buck.

DON’T MATCH DON’T MATTER Two lefts don’t make it right—that’s why we love mixing but rarely matching our favorite socks. Keep it cohesive by mixing styles that have an element in common, like a floral pattern or a similar color palette. Sometimes it’s the overall mood of the socks, like sporty or sparkly, that make them the right fit—but keep in mind that styling this look is more about that organic feeling than a set of rules.

LET ‘EM SHOW No longer the sole domain of balding beachcombers, socks and sandals are having a moment among even the most fashion-savvy. Alexander says embracing the look is as easy as pairing a comfy sandal with a printed sock, or a pair of pumps with a more masculine print. Balance is key—the sock and shoe should have the same weight. Dainty shoes and low-profile sneakers need a sheer sock that won’t overwhelm them, while a bulky shoe needs a thicker sock with a bolder pattern.

Meet the Stylist SHANDI ALEXANDER Shandi may not have set out to be a stylist (she studied English in college), but after a stint living among the hyper-stylized streets of Japan, she knew fashion was her calling. She’s worked for fashion titans like Christian Louboutin and Andrea Lieberman and styled for Vogue, Vanity Fair, and New York Times Magazine. Now she lends her easy play on texture, pattern and color to glossies like Nylon and FOAM magazine (that’s when she’s not practicing Flamenco dancing—she spent two summers studying the art in Spain).
