And the winner is... Next time you are looking for a great read, why not try an award winner? There are book awards for nearly every genre and beyond. Below are just a few of the most common (and prestigious) awards in the U.S. that you may, or may not, have heard about. Examples of recent winning titles are next to each award description. Be sure to visit the websites listed for each award to learn about other current and past winning books and authors. Agatha Award: These awards celebrate traditional mysteries in the vein of Agatha Christie. Categories include best contemporary novel, historical novel, first novel, nonfiction, short story, and Children's/Young Adult novel. Winners of the award receive a teapot as a trophy! (malicedomestic.org/agatha-awards.html) Bram Stoker Awards: Each year the Horror Writers of America present the Bram Stoker Awards for Superior Achievement, named for the author of the 1897 horror classic, Dracula. The awards began in 1987. To avoid competition and focus on superior writing, the awards focus on new and neglected authors and ties are allowed. (horror.org/bram-stoker-awards) Christy Awards: This award was established in 1999 to acknowledge the value and impact novels of faith have in contemporary culture. Fans of Christian fiction will perhaps recognize the award name, which was chosen to honor author Catherine Marshall and her bestselling novel Christy. Winners are chosen by industry insiders, such as reviewers, editors, bookstore owners, and more. (christyawards.com) Hugo Awards: Beginning in 1953, the Hugo Awards recognize science fiction and fantasy novels. Winners are voted on by fans who are members of the World Science Fictions Convention (WorldCon). Note: The Nebula Awards are another award for writers of science fiction and fantasy, selected by the Science Fiction Writers of America. (hugoawards.org & nebulas.sfwa.org)
National Book Award: Presented annually by the National Book Foundation to recognize American author achievements in fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and young people's literature, the award began in 1950 and over the years has had as many as 16 categories! The large number of categories was thought to diminish the award, so by the late 1980s, the number of categories was reduced. (nationalbook.org)
Nobel Prize in Literature: This prestigious award has been given out annually since 1901 to authors from any country who produce the most outstanding work in an idealistic direction. The award is presented to an author based on their whole body of work, rather than for a particular title. Winners receive the famed Nobel Prize medallion and a monetary award ranging from $20,000 to over 1 million. Up to three winners can share the award each year, and the money is split between them. (nobelprize.org) Pulitzer Prize: In 1904, the notable journalist, Joseph Pulitzer, made a provision in his will to establish the Pulitzer Prizes. In addition to awards for journalism, there are 5 Pulitzer Prizes for books, including American life written by an American author, U.S. History, Biography of an American author, Original Verse by an American author, and Nonfiction by an American author that is not eligible in the other categories. (pulitzer.org)
Children & Teen Book Awards Caldecott Medal: The Caldecott Medal was named in honor of nineteenth-century English illustrator Randolph Caldecott. It is awarded by the Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC), a division of the American Library Association (ALA), This medal is awarded to illustrators/artists of the most distinguished picture book published in America for children. (ala.org/alsc/awardsgrants/bookmedia/caldecott) Newbery Medal: The Newbery Medal was named for eighteenth-century British bookseller John Newbery. It is awarded annually by the ALSC/ALA to the author of the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children. 2022 marks the 100th anniversary of the Newbery Medal! (ala.org/alsc/awardsgrants/bookmedia/newbery) Theodor Seuss Geisel Award: The Theodor Seuss Geisel Award is given annually to the author(s) and illustrator(s) of the most distinguished American book for beginning readers published in English in the U.S. during the preceding year. If the award name sounds familiar, it is because Theodor Seuss Geisel is Dr. Seuss! (ala.org/alsc/awardsgrants/bookmedia/geisel) Pura Belpré Award: Established in 1996, the Pura Belpré Award recognizes Latino/Latina writers and illustrators. Named after the first Latina librarian at the New York Public Library, these annual award winners use works of literature to commemorate and celebrate the Latino experience for children and youth. (ala.org/alsc/awardsgrants/bookmedia/belpre)
