From the Director's Desk
Happy May! Did anyone get a chance to see some of the beautiful wildflowers in bloom this April? It's always exciting to see patches of bluebonnets along the sides of the roads. As the wildflowers fade and the days get hotter, our staff knows that means something big is approaching - Summer Reading! Have you heard of Summer Reading? If so, you will be happy to know it will be back (in-person) beginning June 3! If you haven't ever participated or are new to the area, this will be a GREAT time to join in the fun! Summer Reading is a free program we offer each June and July for all ages (0-100+). There are two parts. The first part consists of a reading "contest". Participants can register for free, then read as much as they can and keep track of their reading time. All reading counts - including books, audiobooks, magazines, reading to a child or listening to someone else read, etc. After certain reading milestones are achieved (5 hours up to 300 hours) participants can turn in their reading logs to earn prizes and raffle tickets throughout the summer! There is no gimmick or catch, we just want to reward you for reading! The second part of Summer Reading consists of free events and activities that take place in June and July. These will include a live animal show for kids, family mini-golf in the library, yoga for adults, a special teen activity, family movies, and so much more! Why do we offer Summer Reading? The main reason is to keep kids reading all summer long so their brains stay active and they are ready to start school in the fall. We include adults because reading is just as important to keep their brains active as well! The other reason we offer Summer Reading? It's just fun! Be on the lookout in late May for the "Summer Guide," which will replace the monthly newsletter in June and July and contains all the details about Summer Reading. Be sure to attend our kick-off event on June 3 from 12-6 pm!

National Poetry Month Winners Dark by Piper
Grow Little Seed by Ruby
Turn off the light, 'Cause the dark is better,
Grow little seed, way up tall
We're all the same
Grow little seed, do not stall.
No good, no bad,
I want to see you,
Just blobs of black
Please, please, please!
Just shades of black and grey,
Grow, grow, grow,
So turn off the light,
I love you, little seed.
It's better that way.
Unfold us and Read by Lily We live to be opened
Or a teenage girl
unfolded and read,
With nothing to do,
Without a child to study us,
Finds a story to read
We are not living, but dead.
And can't put it down till she's through.
We wait for a little boy
We desire to be pulled
To peer with adoration,
Right off of the shelf,
To pick us up with unquenchable joy
Without a young child to read us
And clutch us tight with anticipation!
We are by ourselves.
If we could cry out We would warble and say, "Please don't leave us here, Please take us away."
Last month we asked for original poems from grades K-12. These are the top 3 winning poems.

Who's Who on Staff? Meet Averie! Averie joined the library as a part-timer in June 2021 and has a literary mindset and great sense of humor! She says she wanted to work in a library because she loves books and liked the idea of being surrounded by them while at work. You will often see Averie working our Information Desk or out shelving. Averie has a bachelor's degree in English and was the editor of her school's literary journal. While at work she loves talking to patrons about what they are reading and getting new ideas to add to her own reading list. She says that her favorite resource that the library offers is CreativeBug. In her words, "I'm not very creative, but I love watching videos of people who are!"
