Growing by leaps and bounds City Council approves multiple projects BYNATALIE GENTRY The Springtown City Council received updates on and approved several projects at last week’s monthly meeting. Splashpad Once groundbreaking for the Springtown Splashpad occurred earlier this month, crews and contractors have been working nonstop. Two foundations have been poured in the area – one for the Splashpad and one for the restrooms. The bathroom facilities – which will be divided for access both inside and outside the Splashpad park – have also

been prepped for plumbing. The major drain on the Splashpad has been routed to direct the used water back to the city’s water treatment plant. This drain will also be set up to divert rainwater to the creek when the (l-r): President and founder of Rescued Souls animal rescue Cait Bailey, volunteer and foster mom Lynda Little, and volunteers Adora and Liberty Campbell stand in front of Brookshire’s March 23 durSplashpad is closed. BY NATALIE GENTRY The love for all living creatures is the most noble attribute to man. ~Charles Darwin It’s a well-known fact among people who know Cait Bailey that the Rescued Souls founder and president simply can’t pass an animal wondering on the road. “I have been rescuing animals for years,” she said. “I’m always picking up dogs and bringing them home.” Bailey has always been aware of the problem with strays as well as neglect and cruelty cases in the area. And the sad part is, according to her, most of the time animals get in these situations through no fault of their own. “Animals can’t help themselves so

we need more people to be there for them,” Bailey said. But her devotion to animals isn’t reserved just for the dogs on the streets. “I have rescued from dogs and cats all the way to cottontail bunnies, possums, and geckos with neurological disorders,” Bailey said “It got to where I had to place them because I could physically not keep every animal that I came across.”

But that won’t always be the case. “My ultimate goal is have a facility where we can keep our animals,” Bailey said. “This facility will be a place where people can bring their animals instead of dumping them on back roads or at the shelter. Mankind’s true moral test consists of its attitude towards those who are at its mercy: animals. ~Milan Kundera Bailey and the volunteers at Rescued Souls have been hard at work raising money to pay for vet bills and provide food for their animals. During the fi rst part of March, Rescued Souls raised money for the Relay for Life and rescue by selling “Bark for the Cure” t-shirts. All in all, they raised $120 for Relay for Life and the same amount for the rescue. On March 23, Brookshire’s hosted a dog food fundraiser and helped Rescued Souls fi ll six shopping cars with dog food bags and $101.62 toward vet bills. And on April 1, Rescued Souls was the featured charity at the monthly quarter auction. The rescue made $797.25 that night. “I just want everyone to know that all proceeds of the fundraisers we do go towards vetting and care costs of our animals,” Bailey said.

The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated. ~Mahatma Gandhi The news of her dedication to fi nding homes for animals spread quickly and more people began contacting her to help with their animal situations. “I started rescuing and placing [the animals] more and more,” Bailey said. “And that’s how Rescued Souls began.” While Bailey may be the origin and backbone of the organization, the heart of Rescued Souls is the volunteers. The animal rescue organization is entirely volunteer-based and depends on workers of all sorts. Transporters, fosters, donors, and adopters nationwide are always needed and appreciated. “I’m very grateful for all of our volunteers and foster homes,” Bailey said. “Without them, we couldn’t do what we do.” Since Rescued Souls relies on foster Carl Hornback is the facilities director at Porcupine Stadium and Molly, a Carolina dog, is one of a veteran running track meets. If patrons wait to buy their day passes at the park they will pay $3 per resident and $5 per non-resident. On-site, visitors can pay with cash and debit cards only. The day passes will be dated synthetic paper wristbands so that patrons can leave and return to the Splashpad during the same day. In addition, the City is offering season passes. City residents can purchase season passes for $15 a person or $60 per household (up to five people). Non-resident season passes will run $30 for in individual and $95 for per household. The season passes will be silicone wristbands. In the case of a lost season pass a replacement band can be bought for $10. Season passes will be presold April 15-May 30 at a 10 percent discount. The Splashpad will be open from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. MondaySaturday and 1-6 p.m. on Sunday. The facility and accompanying pavilions will also be available for reservations from 6-9 p.m. Monday-Saturday. The 4th annual Porcupine Promenade, a 5K fundraising road race for Goshen Creek Elementary PTA, is set for Saturday, April 12. A 1-mile fun run for all ages – kids 1 through 12 years old are eligible for medals – starts at 8 a.m. At 8:30, a 5K begins – a chipped-timed race over a USATF-approved course. Both races begin at the elementary school. Medals will be awarded in 11 age groups in the 5K. A few sponsorships still remain. Vendor tables are also available, for $25. Contact the school at 817-220-0272 or www.goshenpta.org.

Yoga classes offered in local park Pharmacist Veronica Riera-Gilley will teach gentle yoga classes for the public on the lawn near the volleyball courts at the Springtown City Park at 7 p.m. on April 7, 14, and 28 She is raising funds as part of a “yogathon” and asks for a donation of $10 per class. Attendees should bring a mat and water.

Safety is a major concern, city administrator Mark Krey said. He told Springtown Optimists later that 18 video cameras will be stationed around the Splashpad for monitoring. “We’re being realistic about the world we live in,” he said. The Splashpad will be constructed in such a manner that older kids will be separated from younger ones. Anyone under 12 years old must have a parent with them. About the water park, Krey told Optimists, “This will be a great addition to the park and city.”

While this number is encouraging, there is still a long way to go as this is only about 10 percent of the total amount needed. The restaurant of the month of April is Chicken Express. Ten to 20 percent of the total amount made on Wednesday nights during April will go toward the Tabernacle donation fund. Additionally, the Tabernacle committee has planned a fundraiser day for October 18. This all-day event will include a washer tournament, food trucks, and a street dance.

Tabernacle Efforts to finish phase two of the Tabernacle restoration have entered the third month and to date $13,000 has been raised.

Project Repave 51 The long repairs to FM 51 have been rescheduled from 2017 to the current year. The project is slated to go to bid in August. This places the time frame for construction in December. The plans include milling off four inches of surface from the road between the Walnut Creek bridge and Fifth Street. Once this area has been refilled there will be a two-inch overlay put down from north of the bridge to the Wise County line. New businesses The council approved ordinances that will allow for the opening of two new businesses in

Springtown. One is an auction house at 335 East Highway 199. Larry Throckmorton has six years in the auction business, and plans to hold consignment auctions at the Highway 199 location. He said that large pieces – like mowers – will be displayed on the lawn the day of the sale and then removed. “I’ll place the items outside so that people can preview them, but after the auction they will be moved.” Throckmorton said. Eventually he would like to include vehicles in the auctions and said he plans to store them temporarily in the hay barn on the property. “There will be a three day time limit for pickup of large items so they don’t stay on the property,” Throckmorton said. “I don’t have the space.” He also said that firearms will be included in the auctions but that none of them will be stored at the location overnight. “I have a licensed gun dealer who will transport the firearms to and from the auction house the day of the auction,” Throckmorton said. “He will be able to conduct on-site background checks before any sales of firearms are complete.” The second set of ordinances for a business the council approved was for a convenience

Community members, including Tracy Napier and Tammy Leatherwood spoke in support of the store. “I think that the gas station there would be a good thing.” Leatherwood said. “Let these gentlemen finish building the gas station my grandfather

started in 1949.” The construction would allow for two drives off FM 51 and three gas pump areas. Sadiq Rehman of Sadash Corporation said that an eightfoot fence would be erected for the privacy of surrounding houses and additional shrubbery would be added to help muffle any excess noise.

Young Scouts visit Space Center Some Springtown Webelos headed to outer space – well, almost. Thanks to the combined efforts of dedicated volunteers, supportive parents, and a donation from Jerry’s Chevrolet, Webelos from Springtown Cub Scout Pack 303 spent March 15 “Camping in Space” at the Johnson Space Center in Houston. The interaction between Space Center Houston staff, Scout leaders, Scouts, and parents was promoted through small group settings that not only engaged the Webelos, but inspired them to create, learn, and grow as individuals within their group. The boys attended classes and demonstrations on topics such as the effects of pressure in space; Sir Isaac Newton’s Laws of Motion; Beronulli’s Principle; Pascal’s Law; and the Space Station and Shuttle missions. There, lessons included a problem solving activity which challenged the boys to protect a raw egg during a descending

zip line trip into a solid object. Several groups of scouts from both Texas and Louisiana were given a wooden shuttle, a raw egg, 4 Styrofoam peanuts, a 1x1 piece of bubble wrap, a napkin, a rubber band, a balloon and masking tape. Pack 303 had the only team in their group that successfully protected their egg. The Webelos also watched the movie Space Shuttle: Launching Our Dreams in the Space Center Theater. As part of their experience, the Scouts, leaders and parents camped overnight next to the Apollo 17 Lunar Command Module located in the Starship Gallery. Webelos is a 20-month program for fourth and fifth grade boys designed to prepare them to join a Boy Scout troop while learning outdoors skills and participating in different activity badges. This program provides a gradual change from being an ‘adult-run’ den to being a ‘boyrun’ patrol ready to fit into a Scouting troop.

by mark k. campbell City Administrator Mark Krey told Springtown Optimists April 1 about a slew of activity the town will see in 2014. You can read elsewhere in the paper about the new Splashpad coming May 24 as well as a pair of new businesses coming to Springtown. To Optimists, Krey addressed the ongoing Tabernacle refurbishment, noting that an all-day Oct. 18 fundraiser will include a chili cook-off, food trucks from Fort Worth, a washerthrowing tourney, and a street dance. He stressed that the improvements planned for the Tabernacle would not alter its famous look. Seeking to raise $125,000, the funds will be directed toward new sod, sidewalk repair, a fountain, stage improvements, a modern sound system, upgraded lighting, irrigation, and a new roof. “We’re going to modernize

it; there will be no appearance change,” Krey said. He said the demolition of the former school administration building across from City Hall is complete. Krey said when the new building is finished, it will house public record storage, easing a sorely needed space situation. Inside will be a community room available for renting, a 3,000 square foot space divided into three sections. “It will also be an early election polling site,” Krey said adding that the building should be ready for November balloting. Construction began March 31 and is slated for 227 days, he said. Another topic Krey covered was the widening of Walnut Creek and the anticipation of a new bridge at the intersections of Highways 199 and 51. Nothing will begin until after the annual Wild West Festival in September, he said.

city administrator mark krey told Springtown Optimists that a new building being constructed on the site of the old school admin building will hold public records among its other functions. Photo by Mark K. Campbell Krey said the city and Parker County are sharing costs on the creek area that will help with flooding issues. He added that a new bridge, which will provide better turn-

ing radiuses at the busy intersection, is still at least two years away. “There’s a lot going on and we’re making progress,” Krey said.

After tune up in Boyd, SHS to host 6-3A meet District championships here April 9-10

By MARK K. CAMPBELL At windy warm Boyd, the Springtown track teams finished off the regular season. Next up: the 6-3A championship at Porcupine Stadium April 9-10. There were plenty of highlights in the final tune up meet. One week after setting the new Springtown High School discus record at the POJO Relays with a toss of 164 feet, 3 inches, Kolyn Waldrop returned to the ring and claimed another gold. In Boyd, he tossed 153-3, topping all other athletes. He also shone throwing the shot, winning a silver with a 44-8 effort. Also staying at the top of his game was 400-meter speedster Mateo Herrera. The fleet Porcupine turned in a rapid lap of 53.42 seconds, good for another gold to add to his season tally. Teammate Ricardo Reynoso Varsity 4x200 runners Chanse Lee (left) and Mykeal Cummings will race on the took third in 53.9 friendly Porcupine Stadium oval at district April 9-10. Photo by Mark K. Campbell The duo joined Chanse Lee

and Dillon Springfield to make up another edition of a Springtown tradition – a stellar 4x400 relay team. The SHS quartet won the “mile relay” once again, this time in 3:29.1 Springfield took a pair of hurdling medals. He won the 110 race in 15.04 and finished second in the 300 in 41.12. SHS sprinters placed. Evan Glesne and Lee were runnersup in the 100 and 200-meter dashes, respectively. The varsity girls’ strong suit remained field events, especially jumping. Savannah Sutton got the Lady Porcupines’ only gold medal when she won the triple jump in 33-7.75. Two teammates also placed: Kendyl Dean (2nd, 33-2) and Kaitlyn Hill (4th, 30-9.5). Sutton pointed in all five event she was entered into. She also got a bronze in the 100 (13.19) and finished fifth in the long jump.

Sutton runs the lead legs of a pair of relay teams. The 4x100 won a silver with Sutton passing to Jocelyn Pando then to Dean then to Shelbi Meek. The foursome finished in 52.68. The same quartet earned a bronze medal in the 4x200 with a time of 1:53.48. In the junior varsity division, the boys trio of relay teams took two golds and a silver medal. Gold winners included Zach Burton in the long jump (1811.5) and Blake Sanders in a rare dead heat in the 100 where he tied with a time of 11.94. Books Pennington won silvers in the high jump and triple jump. For the JV Lady Porcupines, distance runner Alli Roglin won the 3200 (13:45.68) and got a silver in the 1600 (6:12.05). A pair of relay teams – the 4x200 and 4x400 – were both runners-up. Porcupine Stadium facilities manager Carl Hornback served as the starter in Boyd.

DH-J no prob for SHS After tough losses to Mineral Wells in district play, visiting Fort Worth Diamond HillJarvis was just what the doctor ordered for Springtown High School’s baseball and softball squads. The baseball team squared its 6-3A mark at 2-2 – and pulled even with Castleberry in third place – with a 9-2 win over the Eagles March 28. Ryan Hester got the win, pitching the first six innings. Jake Jordan hurled the final frame. Two Porcupines belted three hits each – Chance Nelson and Hester. Collin Rector and Russell Gideon both collected a pair of safeties. Mineral Wells leads the district at 4-0 with one game remaining in the first round of district action. Kennedale, Springtown’s Apr. 4 road opponent, is next at 3-1. Lake Worth and Diamond Hill are winless in 6-3A. The softball team destroyed the Lady Eagles, 20-1. Coach Amy Balke said, “We hit through the line up.” Julia Perez bashed an insidethe-park home run. The Lady Porcupines made the turn in district at 3-2 and are in good shape to reach the postseason. Next up is a trip to Kennedale (Apr. 4) then Castleberry back Catcher Jasmine Ricks and the Lady Porcupines blasthome (Apr. 8). ed Fort Worth Diamond Hill-Jarvis. Photo by Mark K. Campbell

Definitive answers to 3 pressing social questions

T

here are many pressing questions being batted about internationally right now, everything from the Russian situation to why Tony Romo can’t win the Big One (or even the Medium One)? Greater minds than mine are addressing this hot topics via important venues like text messages and blogs. I’m way better at solving lesser issues and three have arisen that require immediate attention. (Remember, I’m the guy who decided that forever and ever the word ya’ll should be spelled “y-a-’-l-l” not as the Yankee creator of SpellCheck insists “y-’-a-l-l.” Yes, our ya’ll is not “correct” and that’s exactly what makes it exclusively Texan.) Now, in my Solomon meets Judge

Judy wisdom, I shall rule on these new topics. 1. Do you “read” a book if you only listen to it? There’s nothing like motoring down the road on a long vacation jaunt while listening to an audio book. A while back, I can remember driving through what I thought was the moon but was actually the Oklahoma Panhandle while Dave Barry kept me chuckling. But did I really “read” that humorist’s writings? After all, I now knew its contents and could recite the funnier bits. I must have soaked in some of it, just like I would have had I read it. However, there is a problem. A reader might put inflections or inferences on words that, were you reading silently, you might approach differently.

An oral reading of the book literally biases the listener. The ruling: No, you have not read a book if you just listen to it. Read it: whether electronically ON YOUR or2.physically. Is it OK to sing-a-long MARK with artists at Mark K. Campbell concerts? In 1995, this judge was with his daughter at an R.E.M. concert (which was fantastic). We were down with the album the group was touring, Monster, so we knew every song by heart.

When lead singer Michael Stipe began singing “Tongue” or “What’s the Frequency, Kenneth?” we sang along with him. A 30-something woman ahead of us took great offense at our warbling, telling us she paid to hear Stipe sing, not us. Eventually, snarling, she moved to another seat. The ruling: Like booing at a ball game, you paid your money, and, within reason, you may do what you wish. So, yes, singing along with an artist is just fine. (In fact, it can be a moving experience – like belting out “Hey Jude” with its author Paul McCartney as this judge did a few years ago.) 3. How old is too old to wear a concert shirt or some sports team’s apparel? What’s cooler than donning the Rangers jersey you bought on your re-

cent ballpark visit? And how groovy is it to wow your friends with a black t-shirt from that Megadeth concert? Well, there’s nothing wrong publicly showing your support for teams and groups – if you are 15. The ruling: If you’re an adult and you wear a Romo jersey to the museum, there’s something wrong. And if you’re 31 and strutting around town in an Insane Clown Posse t-shirt – well, it’s not likely you’re going to become a banker or judge. Exemption: You may wear your shirt/jersey if you are actually going to the game or concert. Especially with a kid. (But don’t be an idiot and take your kid to an ICP show.) Mark K. Campbell is the Epigraph editor and, yes, he knows all the words to a song called “Tongue.”

f you know of an endangered building or site, the Texas Historical Commission wants to know about it. Nominations are being accepted until April 11 for Preservation Texas’ annual Most Endangered Places List. Inclusion on previous lists has provided groups and individuals who are concerned about the future of a site the support, expertise, and guidance to strengthen preservation efforts.

New this year, consulting services will be provided to accompany sites making the list. Selected locations will be announced on the steps of the State Capitol in Austin on May 22 during the Annual Preservation Summit. A wide range of sites will be considered, from public residential buildings to neighborhoods, bridges, and landscapes. Previous lists have included Texas Capitol view corridors, the 1896

Texas State Railroad, a rare moveable jail cell in Hays County, and historic homesteads that captured the state’s ranching heritage. For more information, or to download a nomination form, visit www. preservationtexas.org. Preservation Texas is the only private, nonprofit membership organization in the state dedicated to protecting Texas’ historic resources, and is a partner with the Texas Historical Commission.

Fleeing from the Civil War: Mary Custis Lee, Part 6

M

ary inherited Arlington House and its 1,100 acres, as well as the slaves that were, according to the will, to be freed within five years of Custis’ death. She also inherited a mill and other property owned by Custis located in Alexandra and Fairfax counties. The will also contained a provision that when she died, everything would be passed on to her son Custis. Rooney inherited White House plantation, and Romancoke was willed to Rob. “Mary’s daughters received $10,000 a piece that was to be drawn from the plantation proceeds. Unfortunately, the plantation wasn’t profitable. Robert’s two-month leave to bring order to Arlington’s finances turned in to two years. When his leave was up, instead of returning to Texas immediately, he was assigned to Harper’s Ferry where he oversaw the capture and execution of John Brown. “When the Confederate States of America was formed, Mary wrote to her daughter Mildred who was away: ‘With a sad and heavy heart, my dear

child, I write, for the prospects before are sad indeed. And as I think both parties are in the wrong in this fractricidal war there is nothing comforting even in the hope that God may prosper the right, for I see no right in this matter. We can only pray that in His mercy He will spare us.’ “At the same time Lincoln was sending out the call for 75,000 volunteers, he also offered command of the volunteer troops to Robert. Mary remembered how her husband had paced the gardens at Arlington waiting for the answer to come to him – it finally did. He tendered his resignation one day prior to Virginia’s secession, then accepted a commission from Virginia Governor John Letcher as a major general and commander in chief. “Fearful Washingtonians demanded that Arlington be confiscated from the traitorous Lees, alleging that the land would be a perfect location for a Confederate attack against the city. Robert urged Mary to leave Arlington, but she wasn’t ready. However, she did pack up the most treasured of the family heirlooms and sent them to storage at various locations. She solely took to

this task as her children were not at Arlington: Rooney was with his wife at White House and Annie was visiting to help with their newborn, Rob and Mildred HISTORICAL were at school, daughter HIGHLIGHTS and Mary and Agwere at Laurie Moseley nes Ravensworth. “Using her crutches, Mary walked the gardens trying to absorb the beauty around her, as though she knew her days at Arlington were numbered. After several warnings from friends and relatives that she should leave Arlington, she decided to heed their words and left for Ravensworth, escorted by Custis who had just received a commission in the Virginia Army. Shortly after settling in, Mary received a letter from Robert, dated May 13, 1861:

‘Make your plans for several years of war. If Virginia is invaded…the main routes through the country will, in all probability, be infested and passage interrupted. The times are indeed calamitous…’ As weeks passed, Robert urged her to seek refuge deeper into the Confederacy. During the Battle of First Bull Run, she was close enough to hear the artillery fire. Afterwards, she helped nurse the wounded. In her spare time, she wrote to her husband and always included a pair of hand-knitted socks – regardless of how much pain and discomfort the task brought. “Mary traveled to White House plantation to stay with Charlotte, Rooney’s wife, who was now pregnant with their second child. There, she heard many accounts of Arlington’s fate – how buildings had been dismantled for fire wood, crops destroyed, animals stolen, and family heirlooms taken and put on display at the Patent Office. Robert knew of Mary’s distress and wrote to her: ‘Even if the enemy had wished to preserve [Arlington], it would almost have been impossible. With the number of troops

orty-one years after the last U.S. combat troops left Vietnam, the new Texas Capitol Vietnam Veterans Monument was dedicated in a March 29 ceremony attended by a crowd of thousands, including veterans, active duty military, families, friends and relatives. Some 3,417 Texans died or are unaccounted for in Vietnam, according to the State Capitol Preservation Board. Speakers at the ceremony included: Gov. Rick Perry; U.S. Rep. Sam Johnson of Dallas, an Air Force pilot who was held captive and tortured as prisoner of war in Vietnam for seven years; Lt. Gen. Mick Kicklighter, director of the United States 50th Commemoration of the Vietnam War; state Sen. Juan “Chuy” Hinojosa, D-McAllen, and state Rep. Wayne Smith, R-Houston, Vietnam veteran legislators who co-sponsored the monument authorization legislation; Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst; Robert Floyd, chair-

man of monument committee; and state Sen. Leticia Van de Putte, D-San Antonio, who introduced the memorial tribute that included students from San Antonio’s Edgewood Memorial High School and wreaths presented by the families of Texans killed and missing in Vietnam, the Texas Vietnamese community and the Texas legislature. The bronze monument depicting soldiers in action poses cost $2.2 million and was paid for with private donations. Violators face penalties Texas Department of Transportation is working with law enforcement entities to recover unpaid tolls and fees from drivers who have not settled those debts. On March 21 TxDOT announced violators will be “subjected to having their vehicles banned from toll roads, ticketed by law enforcement, impounded and possibly reported to the county tax assessor’s office in an effort to block vehicle registration renewal.”

and community college district in Texas. With 50 local bond elections coming up in May, Combs said, the information is especially relevant. “Since we launched our local debt features last year, we have continued to add information beneficial to taxpayers,” she explained. Appellate court rules A three-judge panel of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit on March 27 issued a unanimous decision upholding House Bill 2, a revision to the Texas abortion law passed by the state Legislature in 2013. The decision reverses a lower court ruling in favor of Planned Parenthood Greater Texas Surgical Health Services et al., that the state law violated the constitutional rights of patients. Texas Attorney General Greg Abbott called the Fifth Circuit’s decision “a vindication of the careful deliberation by the

Texas Legislature to craft a law to protect the health and safety of Texas women.” The Fifth Circuit’s decision may be appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court. Spill cleanup continues Texas Land Commissioner Jerry Patterson on March 26 said work crews and equipment are already in place to protect Matagorda Bay from any oil spilled by a barge at Texas City. It looks bad for the boat fellows, but God, er, the Creator, unleashes His gargantuan torrents of water. Yet Tubal-cain manages to sneak onto the ark. The world’s destroyed. While all the critters sleep peacefully onboard, Noah tells everyone that this is it; the new earth will have no human inhabitants after them. That’s bad news for Ila who is pregnant with Noah’s son Shem’s babies – yes, twins. Noah says he will kill them immediately if they are girls. They’re girls. But will Noah obey what he believes is the Creator’s no-more-humans

stance or spare the children? What works Crowe and Watson are the standouts. They share a scene late – on the deck of the nowlanded ark where Watson cradles her newborns as Crowe towers before her, knife raised – that should never work but somehow does. There’s a nice triumvirate shot of Eden’s serpent, the forbidden apple (which pulses), and Cain slaying Abel that recurs then later pays off. The water effects are pretty cool as are all the computer generated shots.

What doesn’t work This Noah is some freakish combination of science-fi ction, fantasy, and a moral tale of biblical justice, a bizarre merging of Transformers, Lord of the Rings, and The Ten Commandments. These do not mesh at all. This might be the worst soundtrack of the year. Right off the bat, there’s this heavyhandedness – which is later joined by near-jazz infusions. Noah is a jerk most of the time and so is Ham (Logan Lerman), who rightfully is curious about how he’ll attain a wife when the new beginning starts. But Ham’s allegiance to Tubalcain is just dumb. Worst of all is the incessant symbolic bombardment of the evils man is doing to the earth. It’s an easy analogy and is constantly hammered home so often that it gets annoying. Climate control advocates will dance a jig at this Greenest of Green movies.

big storms bubble up quickly in the spring and summer skies here in Texas. Photo by Mark K. Campbell

Stormy weather by mark k. campbell Now that spring has finally arrived, it could just bring some nasty weather with it. Throughout the history of the Lone Star State, outdoor extremes have been shocking. Here are some of the biggest weather events in Texas history (from the Texas Almanac). Sept. 12, 1818 – A hurricane destroyed every building but six on Galveston Island. Sept. 16, 1875 – A hurricane hit Indianola, killing 176 people as three-fourths of the town got swept away. It would get worse for the town... Feb. 14-15, 1885 – In what might be the greatest freak storm in Lone Star State history, massive snows fell on the Texas coast. Houston received 20 inches, Galveston got 15.4, and Brownsville 5 inches of snow. Aug. 19-21, 1886 – A hurricane completely demolished Indianola with every structure destroyed or damaged. The town was never rebuilt. Feb. 11-13, 1899 – In what remains the coldest stretch in Texas history, the temperatures dropped to 16 degrees in Brownville, killing most of the Valley crop. Sept. 8-9, 1900 – The Great Galveston Storm became the worst natural disaster in U.S. history based on loss of life. Between 6,000 and 8,000 people died. The island was completely inundated and every building suffered damage

as tides rose 15 feet. May 18, 1902 – A tornado hit Goliad, killing 114 people. All 40 people in a church that was conducting services when the storm hit were killed or injured. Dec. 1-5, 1913 – Massive flooding in the Hill Country killed 177 Texans. It rained 15 inches in San Marcos. Sept. 14, 1919 – A hurricane near Corpus Christi took the lives of 284 as tides rose 16 feet above normal. Sept. 8-10, 1921 – The biggest rainstorm in Texas history killed 215 people. In San Antonio, 5 to 9 feet of water stood downtown. It rained 23.98 inches in 35 hours in Taylor. The U.S. 24-hour rainfall record – measured at an unofficial site – was set at Thrall when 36.4 inches fell on Sept. 9. Apr. 12, 1927 – A tornado killed 74 people, 72 dying at Rocksprings where the town was destroyed. Apr. 29, 1933 – A mighty dust storm “as dark as any night” extended from Sweetwater to Kansas, blowing away thousands of acres of small grain crops. July 22-25, 1933 – A gigantic tropical system averaged a rainfall of 12.5 inches over 25,000 square miles in Texas and Louisiana. Jan.-Mar. 1935 – Seven times, dust storms reduced visibility to zero in Amarillo. One blackout lasted 11 hours.

Historically, Texas has seen some hail-atious natural events

Another storm was 3.5 days long. Apr. 9, 1947 – A tornado hit the counties of Lipscomb, Hemphill, and Carson. One mile wide, the town of Glazier was completely destroyed; 68 people died. Feb. 1, 1951 – A frigid norther dropped the temperature in Dalhart to -19 degrees. May 11, 1953 – A tornado in Waco killed 114 people and injured 597 – one of the worst twisters in Texas history. A tornado also struck San Angelo where 11 died. 1956 – The brutal drought that had been ongoing in the Central Plains dropped to Texas. Plus high temperatures were persistent from April to the end of October. Most streams experienced record low flows. Apr. 2, 1957 – A tornado struck Oak Cliff and West Dallas, killing 10; 574 buildings were damaged, most of them homes. Sept. 8-14, 1961 – Hurricane Carla arrived with a max wind gust of 175 mph and an 18.5 feet tide surge, both at Port Lavaca. Thirty-four people died, 7 when a tornado hammered Galveston Island. The evacuation of 250,000 saved lives. Jan. 9-12, 1962 – The coldest weather since 1899 dropped the temperature to -15 in the Panhandle and 10 in Rio Grande City as $50 million in crops were destroyed. Aug. 4-5, 1970 – Hurricane
