ASID Media Sponsor Spotlight
LAUREN STURMAN Modern Luxury Associate Publisher
This is the first issue of Desert Design Magazine in which Modern Luxury is the media sponsor and I could not be more excited to be a part of it. During our discussions of how our partnership would work, Susan Solliday informed me that I would be able to address members of ASID directly in this beautiful publication and share my thoughts on the industry, design, and my experiences. Since we’re in the midst of experiencing a global event, it seemed appropriate to discuss design in the context of globetrotting.
Having spent a lot more time at home the past few months, I have caught myself reminiscing on past travels and how I would love to go back and visit some of the incredible destinations I’ve had the privilege to experience. Every time I travel and connect with the scenery and people, there is always that moment of, “I don’t ever want to leave.” Wouldn’t it be amazing if we had this same feeling in our own homes?
One of the most memorable places I’ve traveled was Santorini, Greece. I fell in love with the stark white architecture and vivid blue roofs high above the Mediterranean Sea. There was a very calming effect the landscape had on me - an effect I have tried to emulate in my home design today. I love the idea that you can take a place that you love; in my case, Santorini, and imbue your space with the same feeling of being there. You get the best of both worlds - the memory of that special place and the reality of transporting that feeling to your home where you live everyday.
Travel allows us to experience and appreciate the importance of incorporating cultural design. Embracing different aesthetics and feeling the raw, visceral emotion one gets when entering a balanced space is symbiotic with good design. Picking up unique items to integrate into your design that tell a story can bring a fresh sense of wonder and originality while at the same time reminding you of that special time in your life when you found that unique piece. While not terribly realistic during this global crisis, travel is such a great treasure in life that I think it will be even more appreciated when the geographic and psychological borders reopen and we’re able to move freely across this planet again.
Now more than ever, everyone understands the importance of loving their home. I suspect that the design industry will be very busy in the coming months as many will come to the realization that changes need to be made.
Thank you again for allowing Modern Luxury to be your partner in this journey. It’s great to pick up new friends and I feel so fortunate to include you all in that category.
Pandemic Pivot
LEANN FERNALD Director-at-Large/Industry Partner Liaison
So fortunate were we to experience one of the last in-person gatherings before the COVID-19 lockdown in March. Our Donuts&Dialogue meeting at Cactus Stone and Tile in Phoenix was well attended, even as we all discussed how eerily quiet the roads had been driving to the showroom. We were also so very fortunate to have Rachel Simmons, Interior Design Faculty at Scottsdale Community College, as our guest speaker. Rachel was eager to discuss the value of engaging students and emerging professionals and share the perspective from an up and coming designer’s point-of-view. She discussed ways our membership and industry partners can start building foundational relationships at the student level, and various pathways to internship programs with graduates. Rachel described many of the tools and skills emerging professionals are armed with going into the workforce, and how finding ways to partner with them can benefit both the new graduate and the industry partner or seasoned designer.
In May, we Introduced the Donuts&Dialogue Drive-Thru Series as a way to engage while staying home and staying safe. The Drive-Thru series is just one of the creative solutions our chapter has initiated to provide value to our membership as we self-quarantine. The Drive-Thru Series, which began May 8th, runs the 2nd and 4th Friday of each month and is a quick 30-minute Industry Partner Spotlight. Using the Zoom platform, we meet virtually for a brief Product Knowledge Presentation and Q&A. Our first Drive-Thru showcased Image Craft and their incredible array of art and graphics capabilities, with a beautiful look-book to demonstrate the remarkable clarity and detail in their work. Their team also offered moving inspiration as they presented all the health, safety, and PPE equipment they are creating and donating to our essential service providers on the front lines. Bravo Image Craft!
Membership, we miss you, and hope we can all gather together again soon. Until then, we’ll see you at the Drive-Thru.
