“CELEBRATING THE BOOK AS THE DRIVING FACTOR OF THE DESIGN”

LIBRARY

MAP LEGEND COPENHAGEN, DENMARK VINDENHUS CULTURE LOCATIONS CULTURE RADIUS BEYOND

Project: Vindenhus Project Type: Public Library Year Completed: Fall 2019 Loca on: Copenhagen, DK Professor: Jacob Nørløv

Vindenhus is Danish for “House of Knowledge” and that is exactly what this Nyborder Library is for. The loca on is in a very quite dense residen al area with many cultural representa ons around it. Vindenhus is a simple layout but a complete structure. Vindenhus took inspira on from the SOM Yale library and really wanted to celebrate wanted the focus of the building to be about the book and the space between. People don’t go to the library to only read books - they are their to share knowledge.

The project is designed with only the bridge at the entry connecting the exterior to the interior. each floor is supported by the book shelves making it appear like the books area carrying all of the weight in the build. Layer on is a double layer glass facade allowing for air to pass through crea ng a air gab for insula on. This layer also contains the structure that holds the weight of the roof. In the air gap there is a layer two that provides dierent densi es of louvers for solar shading. The facade is complex but the over all building shape and layout is rela vely simple for easy naviga on and use. Vindenhus blends in very well with its surrounding because it reflects the other builds on the facade.

The double facade allows for air in the gab crea ng a thermal break into the building. The air enters the bo om of the building and as it heats up it rises and exits.

The books create an acous cal barrier allowing me to not have any walls on the interior of the building besides the books cases. This makes the building more flexible and compact.

The building is supported by the book selves crea ng the illusion that the books are holding the building together. The structure is in the corner selves ac ng as columns.

The building is set up in five levels. The lower level for kids, main level for socializing and entry, Level one and two for books and three for quiet study. Leaving this space between the floor and the facade allows for more light to travel into the space and creates a space

UNITY AND BALANCE

Project: Unity and Balance Project Type: Residen al Year Completed: Fall 2019 Loca on: Copenhagen, DK Professor: Jacob Nørløv

Unity and Balance is a residenal project of families that have a single member that is visually impaired. This became an opportunity to develop a home that allowed for two families to work together to grow and live in a safe environment while sharing the same understanding of what it means to have a family member that is visually impaired. The project includes a set of four family is two family pairings under one roof. The spiral circula on makes it very easy to navigate. The family member is able to orient themselves by sounds either above, below, or sounds from outside.

The floor plans are simple and easy to flow for someone that is visually impaired. The dierent floor pa erns indicate where the person is and what they are about to get too. For example a door is along horizontal bar. The colors alternate buildings because each family switches between the two builds creating a spiral eect. This helps the person orient themselves in the building. The stairs going down will always be on the right and the stairs going up will always be on the le . Crea ng this spiral system allows for a nice shared garden that both families can use. As well as store their bikes since 80% of people in Copenhagen bike.

RESIDEN-

The interior of the building consists of these beveled floor paths that travel thought the building. With this. The person that is visually impaired is able to use them as a guide ether with a cane or just by foot. This makes it possible for the individual to feel more at home. The space between the buildings becomes the shared garden that both family can use and gather. This visibility into the other home allows for the kids to have an extra parent looking a er them.

Project: Interchangeable Year Completed: Spring 2019 Loca on: Kansas City, MO, USA Professor: Zach Stoltenburg

Paragraph Interchangeable take Barney Allis Plaza in Kansas City and asked what are the possibili es for this project. There is no place that provides all the needs for a person at a convenient rate. At this complex you can, get your groceries, send a package, purchase items, socialize, play, learn, and so much more. The interior is based on the market making each shipping container rented to local businesses and are able to be interchanged.

The roof is design to be self suppor ng so you can get spaces like the amphitheater space. The goal of this project is provide as many opportunies for the community to use to bring revenue back to the city. My hopes with the shipping containers are that up and coming ar st and merchants will use this as a place to start their business. Maybe they get one shipping container and then another as they grow. The idea is that as long trend leaves a now one develops and this provides a safe space to experiment with the idea. When the holiday season comes around you can add more containers. When mes are bad you can remove some. It is completely flexible.

Sec on AA - Classroom

The core element of a school, and our design, is the classroom. The classroom is the basis for the module. Each module includes two classrooms for each grade level, support spaces, circula on, and a viewing area for parents. The modules for each K-5 grade were created and then shi ed in 5 foot increments to create a variety of support spaces. The center module was expanded in all direc ons and holds the music room, a large collabora on space, ver cal circula on, and divides the neighborhoods. The six modules are capped at the east and west ends with auxiliary spaces for the school and community. On the wast is the library and administra on oďŹƒces and entry. The west holds the gym/cafeteria, pool, dance studio and sensory aeroba cs room.

How does this aect learning? Up to 80% of what we learn in early life is informa on gained through sight. People who are visually impaired o en face challenges in ge ng around their community, in using computers, in reading, and in gathering informa on in a visually oriented world.

The school gym has many ameni es specialized for the needs of the students but oers a wide range of facili es for the community. It includes a half size basketball court, rock wall, bleacher sea ng, water therapy pool and locker rooms on the first floor. The catwalk above has bleacher sea ng for views to the basketball court and access to the dance studio and aeroba cs room for the sensory explora on of the students. The gym provides a safe place for students to run, play and explore their mobility with dierent equipment and ac vi es. During school the gym is used by classes or individuals for physical therapy and during lunch is used as the cafeteria. Classes can be taught a er hours in the dance studio or gym and the rock wall can be open on the weekend for special climbing events.
