inter is my favorite season because I love dressing for the cold – or W what passes for cold around here. In long-sleeve shirts and tall boots, we can be comfy yet stylish during these cooler months. And what about those cold mornings when you cuddle up in footie pajamas and sip on hot chocolate? It’s then that scorching summer temps seem so far away. That’s part of what makes warm PJs my favorite winter style! Here’s hoping that you stay cozy AND fashionable all winter long.

my prized (fashion) possession
“I’m not an expert on fashion and such, but my prized possession would have to be my Buckle jeans. One day I walked in to that store and ever since freshman year I have only shopped there. I love the different brands of jeans that they have. My two favorite brands are Big Star Vintage and Rock Revivals. They fit just right, have designs that scream for attention, and never tear! People always say that $150 is too expensive, but when you find good quality jeans like these, you buy them! They’re fairly popular now with most of the guys and girls at school wearing them. I definitely will never wear a Levi’s or Guess pair of jeans. My loyalty stays with Buckle.” – Aaron Aguirre, Sunrise Mountain ‘12

Which comes first around the holidays – your friends or your sweetie?
“I don’t think relationships should have a priority over friends during the holidays. I think you need to make some time for your friends also.” – Alex Eisen, Horizon ‘12
“Neither. I would rather hang out with family. Because family is forever but high school relationships usually don’t last. And if that person is truly special to me they’ll understand that I want to spend the holidays with my family.” – Richard Pomraning, Arizona School for the Arts ‘14
“I think relationships tend to take priority during romantic holidays (like Valentine’s Day). Not that I really have much personal knowledge, but I have been around people in relationships for awhile. I believe they would take priority since some holidays are a time for romance rather than friendship.”

In my bag In this issue we turn to Alexis Gonzalez, former four-year azTeen staffer and current editorial assistant and ASU sophomore, to show us what she lugs around all day.
The Bag. “It’s my roommate’s bag, just a cute black Missoni tote from Target. Don’t tell her I am using it; I left my Louis at my parents’ house...” Burts Bee’s Super Glossy Natural Lip Shine in Nectar Nude. “I am not a lip gloss girl, but this is the best because it is not sticky and it adds no color, just shine. I love simple makeup.” Smith’s Rosebud Salve. “I am obsessed with this brand of lip balm. I buy it at Urban Outfitters, and it is totally worth it. It is kind of minty, which is what I love, but it isn’t cheap stuff so I never have chapped lips.” Benefit Bad Gal Lash. “The only mascara I will ever use. Plain and simple.” Sharpie. “In case I meet a celebrity like my future husband Taylor Lautner.” Shaun White Stride Gum. “My editor turned me onto this delicious man – er, I mean gum. I also secretly only chew Stride gum because I am convinced that the STRIDE Police are real.” Verbatim 1 terabite Portable storage. “I basically have my whole computer on this thing. I wouldn’t go anywhere without it for fear that my life would be deleted. I went for the terabite because it will hold everything in my life PLUS yours.” Essie Nail Polish in Over The Edge. “Cuz I am edgy like that and wear black nail polish. I also only use Essie brand because I work in a pool (no, not the famous azTeen pool; this is at my other job) and it stays on longer than other brands.” Bath and Body Works Stress Relief Body Lotion. “This is my savior. Want to know how to survive midterms in college? BUY THIS. I rub it on my wrists and sit there and take deep breaths when I am freaking out about tests or just life. It is so calming.” My money. “I don’t have a wallet because it broke. Don’t buy wallets from Claire’s, even if they are bedazzled. I always have some cash and my debit card on me, plus my Dutch Bros. Stamp card. I love me some Dutch Bros.” Cannon PowerShot SD 1400. “My little baby camera that is way better than your huge ‘look at me I am so hipster with my fancy camera’ camera.” My iTouch; So I can pretend to be super cool with an Apple product. I barely use it, but it is lucky to have, Taylor Swift signed the back of my iPod when I met her, so I have this bad boy around just in case, refer back to the Sharpie. Vougue Glasses: I need them to drive. They were relatively cheap at Target Optical and are super cute, if I do say so myself. My Keys: I drive a 2005 White Jetta and she is my baby! I have a Vera Bradley card holder attached to it where I keep my cash, Visa, Dutch Bros and of course my ID and Sun Card. Verizon Droid Pro; My phone that I would be lost without. My gmail is attached to is as is my Google Calendar. I love Droids. There are the best phone to have.

what do you like to see members of the opposite sex wearing? “I don’t like girls dressed in sleazy clothing, or who look like their main goal is to get pregnant at the party. I like when they just wear jeans and a cute tank top and a sexy cardigan. Something about lots of bracelets and necklaces really catches my eye. I like when girls wear headbands too – not like the athletic type, but thicker headbands. I think girls look best when they have a bit of a gypsy style going on.” – Blake Traube, Hamilton ‘12 “I like cute, casual clothes - nothing too bold. They look best when they keep it simple instead of looking like they tried too hard. Plus, that means that on special occasions they look even more special because it’s a rare thing.” – Sergio Ramirez, Gilbert ‘12 “Look at Katy Perry and you’ve got the right idea. But not all girls can pull that off, so they have to find their own thing. Girls look best in what they feel best in.” – Jack Burgess, Gilbert ‘15
“I love when guys are clean-cut and presentable. Belted jeans, a nice t-shirt and a yummy cologne are perfect! I definitely don’t want to see their underwear.” – Ashley Warda, Sunrise Mountain ‘12 “Nice fitted jeans, clean shoes, and a button-up shirt with their sleeves rolled up with a little bit of chest showing.” – Sierra Rodriguez, La Jolla ‘12 “I would like to see a guy wear something nice to a party that actually matches. Some guys decide not to match, and it is quite a turnoff. Most do not care what they wear or how they look.” – Alexandra Abbate, Xavier ‘14 “I’d love to see him in jeans, a V-neck and some sneakers.” – Bria Welch, Boulder Creek ‘14
“I like ‘Dashing Through the Halls’ because it’s joyful and it’s a song me and my family sing when we go caroling every year.” – Mallory Hancock, Williams Field ‘14
“My favorite Holiday song would have to Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer. Growing up I was always singing it whether at home or at school. It’s stuck into my brain and I could never forget a lyric!” – Carrie Gavigan, Apollo ’12
“I love all holiday songs! But if I would have to choose one it would be Jingle Bells. I love it because it reminds me that winter and Christmas are coming. I love both winter and Christmas, so it puts me into a good mood! – Nilza Escobar, Apollo ’13
“My favorite holiday song is Frosty the Snowman! It’s from my childhood and is such a fun song to sing. It always reminds me of when I was young and we would watch the cartoon
and sing along.”
– Allie Afre, Apollo ’12

Endless holiday baking sounded like a great idea on November 1 or 2, but now that we’re kneedeep in the season, doesn’t having someone else do the work sound even better? Of course it does! That’s why God built Sprinkle’s, after all. They make great gifts and even better post-shopping treats for yourself. Plus, it’s right across from Fashion Square – perf! Like ‘em on FB, check ‘em out at Sprinkles.com.
ON YOUR BOD It’s hard not to be jealous when all the fabulous winter coats start showing up in magazines and catalogs and most of us in AZ never see a daytime temp dip below 55 degrees. But thanks to all the cute new shortsleeved cardigans and new takes on sweaters, we don’t have to feel coat envy any longer! Check out model Genesis Thompson in the adorbale “Kayla” style from Nobis – a hooded scarf with pockets to keep your hands toasty without leaving you overheated. Nobis.ca

wrap it up
the web can make holiday shopping quick & easy Final credits are rolling on The Vampire Diaries and it’s time to get down to business. Debit card at the ready and laptop fired up, you tackle your gift list with the deft skill of a seasoned pro. Why navigate the mall when all you really need to do is navigate the web? No shoes, no car, no problem! Online’s best fashion sale sites make shopping during the holidays – and all year long – a breeze.
StyleMint.com
Who doesn’t like t-shirts? At StyleMint, they take center stage. Fill out a ‘style profile’ and the site tailors your selections to suit your tastes. All selections are $29.99, and shipping is free. Thirty bucks might sound steep for a tee, but these aren’t Hanes three-packs; Rachel Bilson and the Olsen twins are fans.
ideeli.com
The mostly high-end offerings here still carry deep discounts. If you’re someone who appreciates that a $600 handbag you can buy for $325 really is an amazing bargain, this site might be your new favorite.
Zara.com
Not a true sale site because Zara is its own brand rather than a clearinghouse for other companies, this hip Spanish company nonetheless deserves recognition for its easy, inexpensive and unique styles, good prices on basics and free standard shipping on all orders all year long.
BillionDollarBabes.com
Live sales are held across the country, but the web-sale offerings will have to hold us unless and until BTB comes to AZ. Recent shoppers snapped up $200 Paige Premium Denim jeans for $54 and paid twenty bucks for a MICHAEL Michael Kors top that retails for $90. The tragedy: when it’s gone, it’s gone. Wishy-washy shoppers will face heartbreak.
GiltGroupe.com
If Vogue is your porn, you will appreciate GiltGroupe’s big, colorful product pics; unlike some sites, the fact that there is no shortage of space in an online catalog versus a paper one is not lost on the page designers. Clothing, jewelry and accessories from top designers – plus luxury home products and gourmet food – are organized logically. 16

Does that carry over to how you dress and style yourself? “I do feel like the “spotlight” carries over in a way, and also feel that I have to be able to represent all the sports I partake in as well as my school. So by dressing how I dress, I feel it’s appropriate for all occasions.” Item you would never be caught dead wearing? “Wearing baggy pants or super skinny jeans, or bulky skater shoes.”

Jessica Seeger, Corona del Sol ‘12 Describe your personal style. “Trendy yet laid-back. I like to look cute and put-together but if it isn’t comfortable, then I will not wear it.” What celeb’s closet would you like to raid? “Miley Cyrus, because she is very versatile in her clothing. The outfits that she usually wears are the kind of outfits that I wish I had the talent to put together every morning! She owns anything from punk rock to country girl in the city and pulls them off so well. She has this rugged yet girly style that I just can’t get enough of.” What trend would you not be caught dead wearing? “I would never in a million years wear those hideous yetilooking fur boots! I don’t want to walk around looking like I have hair extensions strapped to my ankles. No, thank you, especially in Arizona. You just look stupid.” 1 What style do you like on a guy? “I love a man in a flannel shirt! And shaggy hair wouldn’t hurt either… Pretty much the ideal Abercrombie model. They have everything going on.” What fashion-y thing would you like to get this holiday season? “I would like to get some new cute patterned tights! Tights give you an excuse to wear shorts and skirts, even dresses in the winter without looking ridiculous.” Any secret talent? “Most people would never guess this, but I’m really good at fishing! It’s really fun and catching a fish is really rewarding.”

2 Maria Pierre, Xavier ‘14 Describe your style. “Chic, sexy and black. I love for things to hug my body because of my small frame. I live in bandage skirts/ dresses. Oh, my signature Ruby Red Slipper nails.” What celeb’s closet would you love to raid and why? “Kim Kardashian. I don’t love her, but I love her sense of style and the way she dresses to play up her curves.” What current trend you would not be caught dead in? “Hair feathers! Ugh! I don’t know any guy who can actually look at that and say that it’s attractive.” What look do you like on a guy? “Black is downright sexy! Also when a guy is wearing a button-down collared shirt with his sleeves rolled up and a pair of jeans, and I don’t mind him having a bad-boy look to him as well.” What’s in your iPod? “Mat Kearney, Nicole Scherzinger, Adele a little bit of everything. My absolute favorite holiday songs are anything Michael Buble. His voice is sexy!”
3 Alexandra Grunwald, Chaparral ‘14 Describe your style in one word: “Old Hollywood! A number of outfit ideas generate through seeing pictures of various starlets like Audrey Hepburn, Veronica Lake and Marylin Monroe. Their style was so timeless, it made them look classy yet sexy.” What do you love about fashion? “I can express myself through what I wear. I like to mix and match, but most of all I like old things. One quirky thing about my style, even though doesn’t quite fit the ‘Old Hollywood’ theme, are hightop Converse. Give me an outfit and I will end up wearing high tops with it!” Whose closet would you like to raid? “Miranda Kerr is probably on the top of my list. She really fits the categories of looking elegant yet stunning.” What would you not be caught dead wearing? “Matching Juicy tracksuits! It sounds bad, since most people in Scottsdale wear them, but to me they can be sooooooo unflattering.” What style do you like on a guy? “I would usually go for a guy that is scruffy with messy hair and a unique sense of style. I try not to be too superficial about looks, but when a guy is dressed perfectly, it boosts him up quite a lot on my hot-or-not list! Nice jeans that AREN’T True Religion – boys shouldn’t need True Religion jeans haha – a v-neck or flannel, Converse and the occasional beanie. Really kind of a basic ‘bad boy’ look, but also sensitive. Like Collin Farrell, Brody Jenner or Orlando Bloom.” Fave holiday food? “My gammy’s Sweet potatoes are hands-down my favorite food around the holidays! They are a big deal in our family, and have history behind them, but I simply love them because they are delicious!” Fave tunes? “Lime Tree by Trevor Hall, anything Chris Brown and my favorite, Tech N9ne!” Secret wish? “To have the ability to live underwater. It might sound stupid, but personally I think it would be AMAZING. Getting to swim with the fish and see how they live would be a blast!”

WITH ALMOST A FULL SEMESTER UNDER THEIR BELTS, OUR 7 SCHOLARS REFLECT ON COLLEGE LIFE SO FAR. Cole Tsonis
graduated from Shadow Mountain and is attending ASU
Daisy Prado
graduated from Mesquite and is attending ASU “Hey AZ teens! Well my semester is almost over and it has been busier than ever! To all the highschoolers out there, ENJOY FALL BREAK!! College students don›t get one; do you know what they get instead?? MIDTERMS!! Let me tell you they were quite stressful. Actually, the whole grading system in college is quite stressful; in one class the only grades we get are from tests (not a good thing if you are a bad test taker!!). I have straight B’s right now, but my goal is to get at least most of them to A’s. Through a lot of stress, I learned this month that not everything will always go my way and I have to learn to accept that, especially because there is nothing you can do about it; everything happens for a reason. On a happier note, I won tickets to go to a Chris Brown concert! And I am in a club that was able to volunteer for the broadcasting Emmys. In my picture I am holding a REAL Emmy, one of the many that I presented to the winners. Hopefully someday I will be on the receiving side of the awards. :)”

“I was just talking with some friends and we all cannot believe that our first semester is almost over. The months have been flying by, but not without some great memories. One of my best college memories thus far has been Halloween. For all you high school seniors reading this, know that in college Halloween is BIG so start planning your costumes now! What once used to be a single night for neighborhood kids to go out and get free candy has turned into an entire week of nonstop parties. Three of my friends and I decided to be the fighter pilots from Top Gun. Our costumes were a pretty big hit, and my friend Adam actually grew out a mustache to look more like a fighter pilot despite the fact that it creeped out just about every girl on the face of the earth. You can see me (left) and Adam (right) posing with our friend Annie the Indian on the Saturday before Halloween. By the time the 31st actually came around everyone was worn out from the week before and stayed in. I will end this entry with a tip; college is all about time management. You are completely on your own here, there is no one looking after you making sure you do your homework or go to class, and for the first couple weeks it’s pretty awesome. But if you want to succeed then you need to get past your college honeymoon phase and start policing yourself. College is a lot of work but there is still more than enough time to get your school work done and party to your heart’s content, just get the homework done first!”

Shari Hilton
graduated from Chaparral and is attending the University of Kansas “Burr! It’s cold! When I walked out the door to go to class this morning it was 36 degrees and windy. Now I’m not saying I don’t like the cold weather, but it’s a little different from the Arizona ‘cold’ weather. I’ve always been a winter person but I never thought of having to wake up to go to class in the frigid cold. It’s definitely a change for me, but I love it! Nothing is better than snuggling up in your bed with a hot cocoa and a good movie on TV. I have noticed here in Kansas that as soon as the weather changes to cold, fewer students go to class. Which means teachers will usually take attendance or give out some sort of extra credit while those other students aren’t there. So everyone, GO TO CLASS!! I am currently in the process of enrolling for my spring semester classes. I have to keep in mind, ‘Do I really want to wake up at 8 am when it is snowing outside?’ It’s a big change but I am ready to take this challenge head on!”
Stephanie Saccente
graduated from Cactus Shadows and is attending San Diego State University
“Where has this semester gone? With a little over a month left in my first semester, I feel as though so much has happened yet time has completely flown by. We just had Parents Weekend and it was so nice to see and spend the weekend with my mom and catch up on all that has been going on back at home. My first week at school I joined the San Diego State Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists, a club on campus dedicated to protect the perpetration of a free press as well celebrate journalism as a whole. Recently I had the opportunity to tour NBC San Diego with SPJ. The tour itself was an amazing experience and I had the privilege of meeting news anchor Catherine Garcia and weatherman Whitney Southwick. Sometimes we need to explore all the different opportunities there are and be open minded to new ideas. Recently one of my suitemates had to be hospitalized because she had a kidney infection and E. coli. It was scary to watch her go through this horrible ordeal. Thankfully she is doing better now and has been able to fight off the infections. When I think back to my workload in high school I can’t help but laugh to myself as I think about how easy it really was. Where in my senior year I found that I had a lot of downtime and few assignments, as a college student I have found that there is no such thing as ‘no homework.’ Midterms mean goodbye social life and hello library study hours. School is hard, but in the end I know all my hard work will pay off and get me to where I want to be in the future.”
Tyler McDowellBlanken
Bree Purdy
“It’s crazy to think that my first semester at UofA has almost concluded. I can honestly say that these first few months have been hectic but still so enjoyable! My music has definitely kept me sane during those moments of stress. Who knows what I would do without my Maxwell and Alicia Keys albums. There are so many more opportunities available than in high school. As a student, especially living on campus, you are given the chance to network and meet a new, fresh arrangement of people. Just being around so many unique students is a great feeling because you start to appreciate and embrace other cultures. Now as it pertains to the roommate situation: living with someone else was initially tough but after a few weeks together, we developed a mutual respect and understanding. Also, the other students living in my hall are friendly and interesting for the most part. An issue that has been on my mind lately is the whole ‘partying aspect’ of college life. Personally, I am not the type of person to stay out till 5 a.m. doing who knows what and waking up the next day at 2 in the afternoon. Please don’t get me wrong, I enjoy having a good time, but my focus is and will remain on the reason why I am here in Tucson: my education.”
“So now we are two months in to the semester. Mid-term mid-exams are to be taken soon and grades come out in a few weeks. Classes are going well though and I imagine these grades will not be something to be ashamed of. I bumped my course load up from 15 credits to 18 by adding working on the student publication The Lumberjack. I have been cranking out stories pretty much weekly with a couple gracing the front pages of the paper and the website. Schedule planning for next semester has also begun. I will be sticking strong with my journalism major and be taking 19 credits next semester if I get in to all of the classes I want. Sure, it’s a lot—but I enjoy it. My boyfriend, Josef, came up for the week of his fall break and it was fantastic to have him here. I can only hope that it is a preview to how things will be next year when he is also attending NAU. Most excitingly, I saw snow for the first time! It snowed for a brief bit three times in a day. It was absolutely amazing, magical and beautiful. As it begins to cool down, I find myself eagerly embracing the changing seasons and the cooler weather. But we’ll have to see how I feel about it in the dead of winter.”

graduated from Higley and is attending UofA “A plague! A plague on all of our houses! A plague of procrastination! As the semester quickens to its end, I find myself adrift in an ever increasing sea of untouched book work and projects, to be completed only after I have watched hulu and slept into oblivion. But on the horizon looms a final so treacherous, so important that I will – nay, that I must – rid myself of the plague’s grip. So I, being of sound mind and body, shall institute a new program: scheduled procrastination! It is fail-safe! At a specified hour I shall cease my tomfoolery and pick up a pencil! And I will start this new regimen … in two hours. But start it I will! And in the meantime, I will continue hanging out with my buddies, sometimes in the middle of class. And (taking a break from my archaic language if you please) I will be moving into dorm housing next semester so maybe the academic environment will rub off on me.” azTeenmagazine.com

theinsiders is college like you thought it would be? do you feel like
a grown-up yet?
Lauren Motzkin, Yale University
“I honestly didn’t know what to expect going into college. I didn’t know anyone who had gone to Yale, so I was figuring it all out for myself. I wasn’t expecting how quickly I became close with the people who lived in my building; we became like a little family within a few a few short weeks. Regarding being a grown-up: college is the great inbetween time when you get to feel relatively independent, but still have a support system and someone to cook you dinner. Living in the dorms, you’re surrounded by people constantly. Next year I’m moving off-campus and will undoubtedly feel like more of a grown-up.”
our wise panelists give their insight on college life Michelle Butler, University of Oregon “College is better than I thought it would be! I didn’t expect to enjoy my classes this much or to become so well-rounded academically. Also, going to a Pac12 school I expected football games to be fun, but they are so much more than that! As for feeling like a grown-up, I do sometimes. There are certainly challenges to being away from my parents that are a part of growing up. I feel more responsible for the actions I take because there is no one there to tell me when I can or can’t do something, but my parents couldn’t have done a better job preparing me to be on my own.”
Ben Anderson, Trinity University
“I have a brother who is three years ahead of me in school, so I was able to get a pretty clear picture of what college would be like. As long as you don’t think it’s like in the movies – everyone 25, ripped and handsome or skinny and beautiful, sleeping around with everyone – you’ll be fine. I do feel like an adult in the sense that I understand that I am responsible for my decisions. I rely on my parents for some things, but if I were to get myself into any sort of legal trouble, I would be held accountable. College is a time to have fun, but that shouldn’t be confused with making stupid decisions that will have consequences down the road, whether those are related to your health, your grades, or even your arrest record.”
Libby Kiggins, University of Oklahoma
Jessica Mayer, ASU
“I just saw college as the next step, and I guess I saw it as scarier as it really is. I was nervous that I wouldn’t know anything, but then I realized that that’s why I’m in class in the first place! I definitely didn’t feel like a grown-up when I was a freshman – I thought life was a party. Since then I’ve taken school more seriously and am actively preparing myself for a career, so yeah, I feel more like an adult. I like that I can have the best of both worlds – young enough to be optimistic about the future but old enough to be realistic about how I’m going to get there.”
Josh Fendrick, University of Maryland “I didn’t realize how much there would be to do and how many people I would meet in college, but it many ways it is what I imagined it would be. There are things you just can’t imagine until you experience it yourself. Everything you go through once you are in college helps you feel more like an adult. Cooking for yourself, doing your own laundry, deciding your own schedule – all of it factors into making you feel incredibly independent.” 32

“I remember my first day at Xavier thinking ‘Wow, I’m in high school now – this is crazy!’ I said the same thing four years later about college when my mom and I were moving me into my dorm. Time flies, and it flies by quicker and quicker each year. Moving to a different state gave me such a thrill. I realized that if there ever was a time for me to experience something different, college was the perfect time to do so. Now I feel like a grown-up in a lot of ways because I make a lot of decisions I would have gone to my parents for. College forces you to grow up, and the mistakes you do make, you learn from. Going out of state forced me to be independent. I have learned a lot about myself, and I have realized what is important to me, where I want to end up, and who I want to be. That to me is growing up.”

character? Pinnacle! As soon as he walks in a room, junior Daniel Bertilson makes an impression on every other Pinnacle student. He wears a striped polo shirt and a pair of shorts nearly every day – unless he wants to show a bit of school spirit. His hilarious personality makes everyone instantly love him, teachers included. When he calls out something random in class, he’s the one kid who will never get in trouble. A selfproclaimed “God Guy,” he totes around his Bible almost every day. It’s a simple reminder to be who he is, randomness and all, while still being friendly and kind to everyone he meets.

The best part is that each student has the ability to graduate high school with an Associates Degree! The community college clubs and events, in addition to our own extracurricular activities, make it a great place to be.”

Their 12-hour practices are legendary, their pimped-out trailer is a colorful landmark on the GHS campus and their passionate boosters rival those of any football team anywhere. The 122 members of the Tiger Pride Marching Band and Winter Guard are known for their dedication and the accolades their team brings to GHS year after year. Front and center are drum majors Jennie Huettle and Ari Robbins, two outstanding senior girls that are completely in charge and devoted to conducting every move the band makes. The Tiger Pride is ranked fifth in the nation, so being a leader on this team is something to be taken very seriously. Jennie and Ari have put in many hours of blood, sweat and tears over the past four years but say that it has all been worth it because of the many opportunities they have enjoyed – trips to perform at places like Washington DC and college scholarships, for example. The girls say that it’s not easy maintaining the balance between school and their responsibilities in band but insist that they wouldn’t give it up for anything. Judging by this band’s consistent success, that’s an attitude shared by the entire squad.

In the opinion of senior Devin Derr, “sentimental rings are always a fashion statement” because of what they symbolize. “Lots of girls wear them as promise rings or other things like that, and I think that that’s great too. Anything that you can wear that is actually symbolic to who you are as a person, in my opinion, really sticks out in a good way!”

Dancing is nothing new for sophomore Arielle Barbara Amelia Jennings – she’s been doing it since she was 3 – but the chance to dance on TV is. The girl with two middle names and her friends have earned a spot on Disney’s Shake It Up. “When I dance I go in my own world and just enjoy every second of it,” Arielle says. The show’s audition process involved dancers choreographing and performing a 30-second routine. Arielle’s group, AKsquared, was one of six finalists and is the only non-solo act in the competition. “When we won, I felt so proud, shocked, grateful, amazed and super-happy,” Arielle says. Shake It Up airs on Sunday evenings on The Disney Channel.

“I’m a fan of mid-waisted belts especially, on dresses,” says freshman Sydney Edwards. “They add more color to your outfit and make you look very unique. They can be worn pretty much anywhere, and you can also wear them with shirts. There are many different colors and designs they come in, and they are a really reasonable price – between $10-15. I have many and wear them almost all the time.”

“Feather extensions are such a fun trend because they’re so unique,” says Liberty junior Kaitlyn Toner. “You will see all different types of feathers at Liberty, like peacock feathers and long skinny feathers. I like that they come in all different colors and sizes so they are something that everyone can enjoy. They are perfect for accessorizing, especially if they are the clip-in ones because you can change them to match your outfits. And they’re also pretty inexpensive so it’s a perfect style for everyone to try out.”

Winter 2010
No one has ever been more passionate about what he or she does for a living than those of us who have put together azTeen Magazine for the past five years. You hold in your hand our 34th issue since the fall of 2006. It represents the evolution of azTeen and is an example of the dedication not just of the handful of us who are paid to work here but also the literally hundreds of Arizona high school students who have served as our teen staffers over the years. Sappy as it may sound, anyone who has ever visited our office in Old Town Scottsdale knows that the azTeen Family is a living, breathing, laughing reality. Within our family are our teen staffers, past and present; our advertisers; the photographers, printers, designers and techies we work with; the teachers, students, administrators and coaches at the 150+ high school communities who have allowed us to recognize their amazing people and accomplishments; all of the incredible interns we have ever had; those we have written about or honored as Hot 100 winners or selected as models; the bands who have played our events; and all of the readers and Facebook friends who have felt a connection to us in one way or another. What started as an effort to connect teens to one another and make this huge Valley and vast state a little closer has become so much more.

Over the past couple of years we have watched as many of our advertisers and friends struggled with the dismal economy. We saw good people lose their jobs through no fault of their own – individual positions and entire departments obliterated overnight. The effect on azTeen was financial and it was emotional, but we adapted, we got as lean as we could in our expenses without shortchanging anyone or scrimping on quality. In October, we celebrated our fifth anniversary and felt blessed about what we had accomplished during our tenure, from supporting local music, fellow businesses and charities to giving Arizona high schoolers the chance to be featured in our pages or develop their skills as part of our staff.
THE HOT 100 ISSUE 2011
The Prom Issue 2011
We still feel blessed. But seeing this issue completed holds all kinds of other emotions as well, chiefly sadness, because as we prepared to go to press we learned that it would be our last. Like so many of those around us, azTeen Magazine has become yet another casualty of these times in which we live. We used to joke about someday being 92 years old and still writing about teenagers, and you have no idea how much we now wish that could have become a reality. Regardless of what any of us go on to do professionally, we won’t ever have an experience like we have had with azTeen, and in large part we have our readers to thank. So as we say goodbye, from the bottom of our hearts we thank you for your support and wish you a happy, healthy, financially sound holiday season and 2012. the
Most sincerely, issue
We say goodbye, & thanks for 5 amazing years

“A house in Beverly Hills!” – Alicia Haro, Apache Junction ‘12
“If I were to acquire an unlimited amount of money, I would spend it on the best summer road trip ever! I’d go out and buy my dream car: a Volkswagen Trekker in forget-me-not blue, I’d name it Lucy and paint 1970s-style flowers all over the sides. After graduation, I’d pack Lucy up and go on a month-long road trip with my two best friends. On the way, we’d stop in almost every major city between LA and NYC and take as many pictures as possible with random people, like senior citizens and visiting foreigners, without them realizing it. Then after our amazing road trip, we’d make copies of all the photos and put them in photo albums for us to take with us when we all leave for college.” —Marleny Rothans, Mesquite ‘13
“My money-is-noobject purchase would be an allexpense-paid trip around the world so I could have the privilege to see the world at its best and worst and help those that I can along the way.” —Alexa Ooleyn, Centennial ‘13
“If I could buy anything without money being an issue, I would probably buy hair products, like curlers and straighteners, cause all the good products are really pricey.” —Gabby Guthart, Horizon ‘15
“A space shuttle.” —Sean McDonough, Fountain Hills ‘12
“A boat – a really cool sailboat. And boating shoes, so I can go boating and maybe see some dolphins.” —Beau McEvers, Mountain Pointe ‘12
“If money were no object, I would have a mansion with all glass windows and a dance studio! Oh, and a handsome chef to cook me food!” — Nicole Mayes, Apache Junction ‘12
“Solid gold sunglasses, because they’d be an extension of my golden soul. Check out my single Golden at fattywal.tumblr.com.” —Campbell Scott, Arizona School for the Arts ‘12
“I would love to have a Dolce & Gabbana bag.”
—Annabelle Ferra, Williams Field ‘14
“A diamondstudded white dress because I’d be beautiful, and not very many people would have it.” —Deja Depaola, Millennium ‘12
“My dream purchase would have to be a black Range Rover. I’m almost 16, and with a car like that people would go crazy over it. I would also buy zebra seat covers to put in my new ride, and trick that car out! Everyone would be so jealous. I would have the best car at in the school.”
“Can you buy world peace? If I could, that would totally be what I would buy for my ‘money-is-no-object’ purchase. But if not, I think I would buy an island somewhere with like, crystal-clear water. It would be super-fun to just be completely secluded … But world peace would still be better.” —Rachael Begoun, Arizona School for the Arts ‘13
— Rebecca Meagher, Mesquite ‘15
“If I had an unlimited amount of cash and could blow it on absolutely anything, I would buy the car I have been wanting forever. It is a Hennessey Venom GT. The German car is worth $800,000. I would definitely blow 800 grand on something like that! It’s beautiful, especially in all black. Not only is it a beautiful car, but it’s 0 - 60 time is an impressive 2.4 seconds and its top speed is 272 miles per hour. Can you imagine taking a car like that out onto the Autobahn out in Germany and driving at 272? That would be crazy!” — Payton Bulatovich, Mesquite ‘14 38
