Letter from the Publisher
ongratulations to the Arizona Office of Tourism. Finally, after 13 years of our unsuccessfully trying to work with AOT, they finally see the light. They have realized that a third party can create their annual guide, the “fulfillment piece” typically mailed out when inquiries about Arizona come to their office, by using the revenue generated by advertisers. Of course, having rejected us, with statements like “we are not allowed by Charter to consider such a partnership”…well, again…government lies…at least the light shines. I do wish to congratulate Madden Media. They deserve the work…however, I do take exception with AOT’s business model of giving up to a third party the millions in ad sales revenue that will be generated by Madden’s group. Of course, they get their “fulfillment piece” at no cost to the State…but what good is neutral cash flow/cost, compared to CASH FLOW. In light of the state’s budget woes, surely the best solution would have been to keep the work “in house” or to have done it in consultation with a group that would have shared the revenue...as we would have. No matter...budget deficit, education a mess, roads soon will be less traveled, look at the disrepair…No matter...we tax payers will continue to enable our friends in Tourism who have no clue on what it is like to make a payroll…particularly the State of Arizona’s. Again, Az Tourist News is a perfect REAL TIME illustration of how GOVERNMENT does NOT work in harmony with small business. Now the Health Care system is going to work in partnership with small business? I don’t think so…Az Tourist News is the real time example.

he holiday season is a-comin’! The nights are drawing in, menus are planned with stuffed turkey, mince pies, eggnog and other seasonal delights, and homes are strung with lights, hung with icicles, or topped with Santa and reindeer tripping across the roof. It’s time to make up your gift list, choose your greeting cards, and head to the place of worship of your choice…a time to be with family and friends and share love and holiday cheer. All across Arizona, communities large and small are planning special festivities filled with the spirit of the season… parades, light festivals, art markets and fairs filled with wonderful items for gift-giving, concerts and caroling, the southwest treat of luminaria displays, and much more. Here are four events across the state to help you get in the holiday spirit!
Over 35 food vendors keep the crowds’ hunger at bay with Greek, Chinese, Mexican, BBQ, fry bread and many other good things to eat. Two stages present live music and entertainment all day long, while street performers cover the gamut from the Andes to violin music. Kids will have a blast at the “Van Grow” kids hands on art pavilion as well as other fun activities. Tucson’s biggest event, the fair draws crowds of 200,000 - 300,000 people, yet despite its size, the atmosphere is homey and friendly. Visitors head home with bulging bags of delightful gifts, full tummies, echoes of music in their ears, and a happy smile on their faces.

Apache Junction is the place where contemporary Arizona rolls up against the Superstition Mountains and gives way to our Territorial past. Over 100 years ago, the Apache Trail (now Hwy. 88) was carved from the solid rock as the supply road for those building Roosevelt Dam. It passed the once booming gold town of Goldfield, now with its main street restored and the only authentic Ghost Town in Central Arizona. At the nearby Superstition Mountain Museum you can learn of Jacob Waltz and his Lost Dutchman Mine, of the Freight Wagon robber Hacksaw Tom, and the many myths and legends concerning the mysterious Superstitions. Hiking in the Superstition Mountains is a popular pastime. With trails originating at both Lost Dutchman State Park on Highway 88 and the Peralta Trailhead, Highway 60, you’ll see views that are some of the most majestic in the state of Arizona. The Dolly Steamboat is an 1890s steamboat replica that sails on beautiful Canyon Lake offering daily nature cruises, twilight dinner cruises, and astronomy cruises. New and Fun in Tucson
Unique Southwest Allure Alive in the Old Pueblo The clear dark skies of Arizona are world famous and have attracted many outstanding observatories to our state. However, you don’t have to travel outside the city to experience the wonders of the universe. Sky Bar, “The Most Unique Bar in the Galaxy,” is coming to historic Fourth Avenue. This fall, Brooklyn Pizza Company owner Tony Vaccaro will open Sky Bar, offering patrons a vivid look into deep space through color images of nebulae, galaxies and star clusters beamed onto two separate monitors - one hooked-up to a rooftop telescope outfitted with a camera, and the other using the latest planetarium software. Located at 536 N. 4th Avenue, Tucson, Sky Bar will offer a full bar as well as coffee, espresso, tea and other non-alcoholic beverages in a comfortable and relaxing café-like space. Extraordinary natural wonders and scenic views are also part of the allure of the Southwest. Famed landscape photographer Ansel Adams (1902-1984) captured many beautiful and unique images of the natural world. A survey of more than 100 of Adams’ Th Ch es ec e k Ou t

photographs will be on exhibit at the Tucson Museum of Art from October 10 through February 14, 2010. Many of his most famous images are included and presented in the intimate scale he intended them to be viewed. Adams co-founded the Center for Creative Photography at the University of Arizona, Tucson in 1975. www. TucsonMuseumofArt.org The history of the Southwest is a part of our national psyche, and many visitors come to explore our pioneer heritage. Meet and talk with representatives of colonial Tucson during Living History Days at the Tucson Presidio (or El Presidio Real de San Agustin del Tucson). On select Saturdays from October through April, volunteers will re-enact life at this replica of the adobe fort originally established in the 18th century in what is now downtown Tucson. Visitors can experience the fort’s 20-feet-tall, 1780s lookout tower and 1830s-era house and streetscape, along with activities of daily life. Thanks to the nearby Grand Canyon National Park and Grand Canyon Railway, the reputation has been conveyed around the world. Stories are a regular occurrence with glowing recommendations from family and friends. Many visitors do return frequently, planning their trip around stopping at the restaurant for yet another meal, a piece of pie or a whole pie to take home. Grand Canyon Mulls Limits On Mules
The National Park Service is considering a limit on mule rides into the Grand Canyon. The mules, though iconic and beloved, are brutal on the trails. Their hooves hit the ground like a pickax, and the hardened earth crumbles. Mule rides have already been banned on the South Kaibab Trail, where the Park Service is months into a years-long project to rebuild the trail. Nobody is suggesting a ban on mule rides into the canyon; rather, the Park Service is trying to measure the effect of mule trips on the environment. (USA Today; Travel Advance, Sept. 30)

From Earth to Sky: Paintings by Sally Hall runs until February 17, 2010. Kolb Studio is open 8 am - 5 pm daily. Inspiration for this exhibit sparked a long time ago. When Sally Hall was a child, imagery literally came up out of the ground around her feet. As “assistant” to her father during research trips on the North Rim of the Grand Canyon, Hall often came across potsherds, tantalizing remnants of “the Ancients” who had known the Grand Canyon before her. These people and their mysterious lives were a profound, silent presence

Westwind RV and Golf Resort A “Jewel” in the Yuma Area
Ten miles east of the historic township of Yuma, Arizona, sits a lovely enclave on the South Frontage Road. Westwind RV and Golf Resort nestles near the rise of the scenic desert foothills. As one turns into the boulevard lined by stately palms, the “crown jewel” of the resort is visible to the left. Glistening in the sun is the 3 par 9 hole golf course in a lush emerald carpet among tall, well situated trees. The degree of difficulty is a challenge to even the most experienced golfer. The registration and activity offices are well appointed, and warm smiles welcome the traveler. Escorts are provided to accompany each visitor to a large, patio-included site. The resort offers a multitude of interesting and delightful activities. The library holds over 1,500 books and videos, as well as an e-mail station. There is a ceramic/craft room, a lapidary and a well kept billiard room with eight tables. Also on offer are quilting and sewing, darts, cards and over 100 planned activities for the enjoyment of the residents. A lounge offers plenty of space and tables for private parties or just a quiet place to relax. There is a newly remodeled fitness center sporting the latest up-to-date exercise equipment.
