A NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR When Azuka’s Literary Manager Allison Heishman gave me Neighborhood 3: Requisition of Doom she told me not to read it at night or while I was alone. I scoffed at her, and did exactly what she told me NOT to do. By the end of the read I was madly texting her telling her how freaked out I was. She rather unsympathetically responded, “I told you!” Now, I’m not a big horror fan – it’s a genre of film and literature that’s never really done much for me. Nor am I in any way, shape or form a gamer. However, this story really got to me. As I continued to re-read it, I was struck by what the playwright had to say about life in the computer age. As someone who didn’t grow up with computers as a part of my day to day life, it’s been extraordinary for me to watch as computers and the internet moved from being used for very specific tasks by certain groups of people, to becoming a significant part of the fabric of our daily lives. For the most part I think that’s a good thing (just TRY and pry my iphone from my hand!). That said, I have been acutely aware for some time that the wonder of the internet; the ability to chat with someone in real time on the other side of the world, to have encyclopedic knowledge at your finger tips, comes at a cost. You sit at a computer ALONE. You may be speaking to the world, but you’re doing so from a very solitary place. It’s that dichotomy that has given me pause. I am in no way trying to demonize computers or the gamers that use them (and neither is Jennifer Haley), but to ignore the social disconnect that’s happening isn’t a good thing either. Maybe it’s why I love theater so much; it’s one of the last great gathering places, where we experience something with other people, not just at the same time as other people. I hope you enjoy Azuka’s first venture into horror. If you get truly frightened, maybe the person next to you can be comforting. If not, you can always text a friend or put something on your Facebook page—in fact I hope you will!

Thanks to the Cast and Crew.

But enough about me... What’s up with you? Kristen Egermeier (daughter type) is very excited to be working with Azuka on her first production in Philadelphia!
