Growing up in Japan, I developed a unique perspective on life, shaped by the countrys rich cultural heritage and stunning natural landscape. I was also immered in a culture thta values community, tradition, and respect for the environment. ONE: Pediatric Clinic

PROJECT Robert Bruce Thompson Lighting Design Competition

TYPOLOGY : Commercial

LOCATION 35 Creek Road, Irvine, CA 92604

This project involves designing a waiting room space for a pediatric clinic in Irvine. The waiting room will have three separate areas for children and adults, each designed to cater to the diferent purposes of the spaces.

The Robert Bruce Thompson Annual Student Light Fixture Design Competition is a contest that allows students to showcase their creativity and innovation in the field of lighting desigh. Participants are tasked with creating unique and funcitonal light fixtures that push the boundaries of traditional desigh. This competition provides students with a platform to gain recognition for their work and potentially kickstart their careers in the lighting industry.

GOAL : The goal of this project is to create a welcoming and comfortable environment for families and children to wait before their appointments. The design will focus on creating a playful and child friendly atmosphere while also incorporating functional and practical elements to ensure a smooth experience for both patients and staff.

SITE ANALYSIS

LOCATION

35 Creek Road Irvine, CA 92604

The site at 35 Creek Road in Irvine, CA 92604 is an ideal location for a new pediatric clinic. The area is conveniently located near residential neighborhoods, providing easy access for families. With ample parking avaialbe and good visibility from the road, the site has great potential for attracting patients. Additionally, the surrounding community is in need for more healthcare services for childern, making this location a strategic choice for a new pediatric clinic.

CONCEPT

The concept board for this pediatric clinic waiting space draws inspiration from the serene colors of a forest, combining matte blue, green, brown, and pink tones to create a calming and playful environemnt. Soft blue and green walls evoke the feeling of being surrounded by trees, while brown accents add a touch of earthiness. Pink pops of color are introduced through playful decor elemetns, mimicking the colors of flowers found in a forest setting. The overall design aims to create a welcoming and soothing space for children and their families to feel at ease in while awaiting their appointment.

This room is designed as a cozy TV loounge where children can relax while waiting for their docto’s appointemtns. To transport them to a magical world, multiple trees and rounded shapes are strategically attached to the walls. creating a whimsical space that combines wooden base furniture with plenty of imaginative play areas. PERSPECTIVE

The custom lighting fixture is designed to mimic the shape and soft, diffused glow of a cloud. It is made using recycled aluminum for the frame, providing a sustainable option that reduces waste and supports LEED certification requirements. The fixture also incorporates recycled rice paper as diffuser material, which further enhances its eco-friendly and sustainable qualities.

INDOOR PLAYGROUND

This view showcases the entire waiting space from the indoor playground area. The wiggly designed floor creates a sense of wayfinding, guiding visitors throught each space. Manwhile, the rounded shaped lighting fixtures work to create a cozy atmosphere, setting the tone for a welcoming experience.

ADULT WAITING SPACE

Cove lights are used in the false ceiling to showcase various wall materials, providing depth and visual interest in the space. The lighting in the waiting area, including cove lights and ambient fixtures, is thoughtfully chosen to create a welcoming environment for patients and their families.

Converting a single-family dweling into a multifamily residence with an existing

CLIENT The client is a resident of Los Angeles who wants to invest in a property converting and existing simgle-family dweling into a multi-family residence in an effort to combat the housing issues for those in need.

ORGANIZATION I am working along side the Hope of The Valley. It is a nonprofit homeless shelter whose mission is to attract people and resources to assist in the effort of meeting the needs of every hungry and homeless man, woman and child in the Los Angeles area. Hope of The Valley obtained a loan to help finance a 16000 square foot facility that will offer mental, physical, and transitional

Hope of The Valley

Hope of the Valley is a nonprofit shelter in Los Angeles offering housing, support, and resources to homeless individuals and families. They are commited to meeting the needs of every hungry and homeless person in the area through transitional housing services and care.

SITE ANALYSIS

The site appears to be a single family home in a suburban neighborhood. Nearby amenities include schools, parks, and shopping centers. The neighrhood is likely family-friendly with a mix of homeowners and renters. Imperial Beach is known for its becasue and outdoor recreational activities, making it a desirable location for those who enjoy a coastal lifestyle.

CONCEPT

By using a combinatino of green, dark blue, brown, and gray tones in the interior desigh, a calming and soothing atmosphere can be created for individuals facing mental illness or addition. These colors have been shown to reduce anxiety and promote relaxation. Additionally, incorporating smooth textures like soft fabrics and sleek surfaces can provide a sense of comfort and secutiry, making the space peaceful and inviting for healing and recovery.

DESIGN DEVELOPMENT

In this ADA designed room, a woman in her 40’s will temporarily stay until she secures permanent housing. Having grown up in a domestic family environment and subsequently developing a drug addiction, she now relies on a wheelchair for mobility.

In this space, a couple in their 20s and 30s will be staying, having endured a tumultuous past. After spending three years in jail, they faced the unberable consequences of losing their jobgs, friends, and family connections.

In this space, a couple in their 30s and 40s, who both grew up in a domestic family but suffer from claustrophobia and mental illness, will be staying.

Residents use gazebos as peaceful retreats for meditating, socializing with others, or simply enjoying the surrounding environment.

ADA compliant bathrooms are designed to accomodate individuals with disabilities, including the inclusion of grab bars, reversable ADA shower seats, and non-slip flooring.

Green helps with mental health and addiction by providing a therapeutic and calming environment that supports emotional well-being and

Black, gray, white colors can create a claming atmosphere, a minimalistic and clean appearance, and promote increased focus and concentration.

RESIDENT 1 | BEDROOM

The green wall with wood floor provides a sense of peace and renewal for the couple, symbolizing a gresh start and growth.

The natural elements can help them reconnect with nature and find solance in their surroundings. The conbination of greenery and warmth from the wood floor will create a calming and nurturing environment, promoting healing and emotional wellbeing for the couples as they rebuild their lives.

PERSPECTIVE

The ADA bathroom includes a toilet with installed handrails for support and stability for individuals with disabilitites. The shower also features seats and handraiils to ensure safety and comfort while taking a shower. The layout and features of the bathroom are compliant with ADA regulations to accommodate individuals with different moblity needs.

• Toilet: 18 inches from the floor to the top of the seat

• Grab bars: installed near the toilet and in the shower

• Shower: 36 inches by 36 inches of clear floor space

• Mirros: 38 inches from the floor

PERSPECTIVE

RESIDENT 3 | LIVING ROOM

Creating a simple interior design with a color palette of gray, white, and white can help create a calming and spavious feel in the living space. This minimalist approach can help reduce visual clutter and promote a sense of openness, which is beneficial for the client who suffer from claustrophobia and mental illness.

Drawing on their domestic upbringing, the use of these neutral colors can provide a sense of familiarity and comfort, while also offering a modern and sophisticated aesthetic.

THREE: The Power of Design

PROJECT Spring Semester, 2024

TYPOLOGY : Commercial

LOCATION 4-16-9 Sakuragaoka, Setagaya City, Tokyo 156-0054, Japan

CLIENT:

• Age - 65 + years old

• Gender - Female and Male

• Living Situation: Currently residing in a nursing home in Japan

• Dementia Diagnosis: Alzheimer’s disease, vascular dementia, or other types of dementia

HEALTH STATUS:

• Dementia Symptoms: Moderate to severe, affecting daily functioning and memory

• Physical Health: May have underlying medical daily functioning and memory

• Cognitive Impairment: May experience difficulties with memory, attention, problme-solving, and language

GOAL:

The goal of this research is to design environments that address and fulfill the needs of individuals with dementia, enhanving their well-being, fostering greater autonomy, and promoting safety, reducing anxiety, and supporting navigation for both resients and nursing home workers.

SURVEY QUESTIONS

QUESTIONNAIRE

The questionnaire, which included interviews, consisted of 21 questions and was administrated to a total of 33 individuals with dementia and workers residing in nursing homes.

The participants were asked a total of 21 questions (Figure 1).

The nursing home’s location in Setagaya City, a popular and affluent residential area in Tokyo, provides easy access to a large and affluent potential patient base, as well as proximity to major transportation huns, including the Tokyu Setagaya Line train station. The surrounding neighborhood’s quiet and peaceful atmosphere also offers a serene and calming environment that is conducive to the rehabilitation and care of edlerly patients.

CONCEPT

Bionest Nursing Home is a nursing home that uses natural elements to make people feel calm and happy. We add natural features like wood, trees, and lots of plants to create a peaceful and relaxing environemnt. Our goals is to help residents feel connected to nature and improve their physical and mental well-being. We consider how nature and building can work together to create a cozy and welcoming space that feels like a quiet retreat, rather than a hospital.

ENTIRE DINING ROOM

The dining room features large windows that allow natural light to pour in, and specially designed tables with ample space for elderly individuals to comfortably dine while using wheelchairs or walkers. The open floor plan also provides a safe and accessible space for the to move around, enjoying the beautiful views of the outdoors while savoring their meals.

The cozy activity room at the senior living facility features a comfortable sofa area where reisdents can sit cand chat with friends while enjoying the views of the outdoors through large windows. In addition to socializing, the room also boasts billiard tables, providing a fun and engaging space for residents to spend time with others and keep their minds active.

FOUR: Adult Daycare

LOCATION 5757 Wilshire Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90036

Building:

This building was previously used as a dental office and is being renovated to accommodate an adult daycare center.

CLIENT:

The users for this adult daycare are elderly adults, caregivers, and workers.

During the design development phase of the construction document, architects and designers will showcase the detailed plans and drawing for the adult daycare facility, highlighting the layout, finihses, and features that will be included.

GOAL:

The goal is to ensure that all stakeholders, including administratos, staff, and potential clinets, have a clear understanding of the facility’s design and construction plans.
