he first day of the Air Cargo Forum in Toronto last week saw the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between organisers The International Air Cargo Association (TIACA) and events company Messe München. The MoU is the first step in the two organisations working closely together on TIACA’s Air Cargo Forum and Exhibition. Under the agreement, Messe München will undertake the organisation of the Air Cargo Forum, while TIACA remains in control of the content of the

conference. TIACA will also be a strategic partner at Messe München’s “transport logistic” events in Munich, Germany, Shanghai, China, and Istanbul, Turkey. The next ACF will take place in Miami, Florida, USA, where TIACA is headquartered. The idea is to organise the event in a fixed location every two years and with the support and knowledge of Messe München, to transform it into a real logistical intermodal event. TIACA will retain editorial control of all content

for the conference programs of the ACF and will continue to organise the Executive Summits at different corners in the world to reflect the organisation’s global status. TIACA and Messe München will jointly promote all of the events. IATA slows cargo supply chain Our new columnist takes a sideways look at matters that affect airfreight. In the first of his comments, he takes IATA aside for its waffle on the subject of our front page of 1 October.

STAFF AT London Gatwick-based Das Air Cargo were in a state of disbelief last week after the carrier’s fleet of DC-1030 freighters had been banned from operating in European skies. The ban, issued by the European Commission (EC) came into effect from midnight 14 October. An EC statement said: “The Commission has heard all those who likely to be involved and requested a hearing.” Das Air Cargo executives were meeting with EC officials as Air Cargo Week went to press.

ATA was launched in Havana, Cuba in 1948 to maintain the quality services of member airlines, of which there are now 290. In fairness, the Association was also responsible for profitability but not to the detriment of services. For some years now, IATA have passed the blame to the cargo agent for not providing the Air Way Bill by email ( e-AWB ). In our October 1 issue , you may have seen an open letter to Alexandre de Juniac, the director general and CEO of IATA, along with the chairman of the cargo committee , Peter Gerber. The letter was from half-a-dozen knowledgeable executives from the air cargo business. The AWB continues to be delivered at the airport by the cargo agent’s freight driver in half a dozen paper copies, rather than pre-delivered by email. New technology is to the benefit of IATA’s 290 members but the Association expects the freight forwarders to pay for the privilege. At long last, this letter places the responsibility firmly with the airlines.

Vintage cargo for AFKLM

AIR FRANCE KLM Martinair Cargo transported a vintage Morane-Saulnier H aircraft to Saint-Denis Roland Garros Airport on the island of Réunion in the Indian Ocean. On 5 October, the centenary of the death of French aviation pioneer Roland Garros was marked on the island. Garros became the first to fly across the Mediterranean on 23 September 1913 when he flew from Fréjus in the south of France to Bizerte in Tunisia. A large number of commemorative events were organised on Réunion, as the island was the birthplace of this passionate and historic aviator. The vintage aircraft, from the dawn of aviation, was handled on one of the world’s most modern cargo aircraft, a B777 freighter.

aircargoweek.com

This letter also mentions the failure of TIACA and FIATA to mention this subject to their members but at the same time waffle on about new technology. Some years ago e-AWB was new technology but now has reached the depths of underused waffle. Watch this space.

Amazon Air flies to Miami

M

iami International Airport has welcomed Amazon Air cargo operations, with double daily Boeing 767-300 services operated by Atlas Air. Amazon already operates four warehouses in Miami-Dade County, all within 12 miles of the airport with an 885,000 square foot fulfilment centre at Miami-Opa Locka International Airport being completed this year. Amazon Air’s launch comes nine months after Miami-Dade Aviation Department officials hosted its first e-commerce strategy workshop with more than 30 local industry stakeholders, with the aim of establishing Miami-Dade County as a leading e-commerce hub. Miami-Dade County mayor, Carlos Gimenez says: “I proudly welcome Amazon Air’s expansion to Miami-Dade County, and appreciate its commitment of two daily flights at MIA. I wish them continued success and growth within our community.” Amazon Air director, Sarah Rhoads says: “We are excited to launch the Miami gateway

Chapman Freeborn partnership with GTA

to support our growing air operation. Amazon has enjoyed being a part of the Miami-Dade community and are thrilled to continue our relationship.” Miami-Dade aviation director, Lester Sola says: “Amazon Air’s two daily flights will add a significant boost to our domestic cargo traffic, which is already up 17 per cent through August.” Meanwhile, about 20 pilots from Atlas Air and ABX Air, a subsidiary of Air Transport Services Group (ATSG) protested outside the Cargo Facts Symposium on 11 October to raise awareness of issues at the companies. The pilots marched outside the Omni Hotel in San Diego with signs reading “No e-commerce revolution without cargo pilots”. They were represented by their union, the Airline Professionals Association Teamsters Local 1224. The pilots are contracted to work for DHL and Amazon, and have been locked in a long running dispute over wages and working conditions. Picture credit: APA Teamsters Local 1224.

Planning permission for AIPUT Heathrow warehouse

A

berdeen Standard Investment’s Airport Industrial Property Unit Trust (AIPUT) has secured planning permission for its landmark Heathrow Airport cargo warehouse. The 250,000 square foot facility, which has received planning permission from the London Borough of Hounslow’s Planning Committee, has been designed to accommodate the operational requirements of dnata, and will complement dnata’s existing facilities. The buildings, known as dnata City East represent one of the largest off-airport pre-lets at Heathrow, benefitting from a strategic location opposite the Heathrow Cargo Terminal and adjacent to the Southern Perimeter Road. AIPUT fund manager, Nick Smith says: “This

planning permission reinforces AIPUT’s position as one of the largest and most informed landlords around the airport, with the right property in the right place to serve the expanding air-freight related demand and logistics requirements.” dnata UK chief executive officer, Gary Morgan says the development will help the company accommodate increased demand from its growing portfolio of customers. He says: “Securing a state-of-the-art warehouse of this size in a prime location builds on our relationship and real estate work with AIPUT and puts us in a strong position to handle the airport’s cargo-handling requirements of the future.” Artist impression pictured above.

A fishy two years in Oslo for Emirates

EMIRATES SkyCargo has celebrated two years of freighter operations at Oslo Airport, offering 5,000 tonnes of cargo capacity annually. Since 2016, Emirates freighters have carried a third of the shipments of 35,000 tonnes of salmon from Oslo to export markets in the Middle East and Asia. Norway is one of the world’s largest exporters of seafood and exports of salmon were valued at around $4 billion in the first six

months of 2018. In addition to weekly Boeing 777 Freighter services, Emirates offers cargo capacity on its daily passenger services to Oslo. Through its perishables product Emirates Fresh, seafood exports arriving from Oslo are rapidly transported through an unbroken cool chain at Emirates SkyCargo’s Dubai hub. The Oslo freighter service also frequently carries pharmaceuticals and other general cargo.
