LATEST NEWS FROM AZURE WHAT’S NEW? I’ve had some feedback on member exchanges from Interval International that shows a very healthy outbound exchange activity from the resort. America is proving a big hit with our members this year, as well as Italy. With new resorts opening all the time, it’s best to keep up to date!

WHAT CAN YOU EXPECT AT THE RESORT THIS SUMMER? Dear Members, It appears that many members are choosing to take breaks earlier than normal, there’s also a growing trend of additional time being taken for mini breaks & city breaks. There’s so much to see in Europe and with flight prices being so good….well, it’s a perfect time to explore new experiences? The winters have been good to us here in Malta, we’ve had some great weather with lots of sunny days and clear skies, so I’m not at all surprised to hear that our winter bookings are on the increase. With people taking longer winter stays abroad, this year certainly shows a shifting trend.

The heat is on in Malta and summer is here for sure. The beach is clear, the sea – a dazzling blue, the wine is chilled and the gardens are looking amazing too! We’ve teamed up with the Gaia Foundation who care take the local Nature and History park known as ‘Il Majjistral’ that surrounds the resort. Azure is plannig on introducing a Secret Garden Market within the Gaia Foundation gardens as a means of adding value to the area and creating another exciting hot spot.

We will also carry on supporting good causes throughout the year as with previous years and have two more charities we are looking to raise money for. We have several Well, comfortingly the same old ex-military staff here at Azure, myself faces around included, as the place well as many are looking ‘How can it be July current and forward to already?...’ ex-serving welcoming members of It’s incredible how fast you. We’ve accepted and will be once again raising money for the Malta Community Chest Fund along with ‘Help For Heroes’. There will be more about the rally later for those members that like to follow our journey and website links will follow. A big thank you to everyone that donated last time, as you saw, we usually support three charities when we take up events, so again any suggestions are very welcome on who you may want us to support as a third charity.

As always, if you need help choosing dates or just want to have a chat over possibilities and destinations why not give us a call, there’s an immense and diverse choice of experiences and it never hurts to get an update on what’s new! HEATHER & STEWART SAY “I DO” IN MALTA WORDS GRAZIELLE CAMILLERI

Have you ever planned to go on a holiday break with your partner, as you have done many years prior, booked your accommodation, flights and transfers and then got encouraged to tie the knot too while you were at it? Well, this is exactly what happened to Heather and Stewart from Fraserberg, Scotland!

In May this year, Heather Coutts, 31 came across one of Azure’s ‘Preview Visit’ promotional holiday offers. This was an offer inviting couples to experience the resort and the beautiful Maltese islands for 7 days of luxury, for the special price of just £399. This offer included a meet and greet at Malta International Airport and a presentation held one morning or one afternoon, showcasing the benefits of a full club membership.

many children will be joining you? Are you married?’’ Zoey was quick to learn that this couple had been happily engaged for over 10 years, they had two children, they had their own house. So in her usual bubbly fashion asked Heather, “Well, now that you are booked to come over with your family, and you have been engaged for over 10 years and you are coming over to Malta, why don’t you get married here while you’re at it?’’

Heather Coutts, who was really yearning for a holiday break to sunny Malta quickly applied for this fantastic offer by sending an e-mail with her full details.

After a few seconds of silence and a few stammers, Heather said, “Well that might actually be a great idea! We just never had the chance to think or organize it before because we have been so busy working and settling in our home and we just never thought about it!”

Within 24 hours, she received a call back by Zoey Sadowski, one of the top Azure telemarketing consultants we currently have on the team and placed a booking to visit the resort the first week in June with her partner and her two children Carter (age 5) and Harris (age 3). Zoey asked the usual questions as is required by normal procedure. The couple did qualify as per terms and conditions. They were booked in for the holiday offer. They secured the deposit payment and that was it! However, what was different this time was that as Zoey was asking questions, as she usually does, for example, ‘‘How long have you been living together? Why Malta? How

After a few more e-mail exchanges and phone calls, Heather and Stewart decided to go for it and tie the knot in Malta, without telling their family or friends. Heather said, “I’ve never had a wedding far from my mind if truth be told but it’s an expensive and often stressful affair. Our boys are a good age to be involved in the big day. We thought of a wedding abroad right from the start but with elderly relatives that wouldn’t be able to attend, we dismissed the idea. Now we are certain everyone will understand us going away and marrying with our boys. After all, a

10 year engagement is sufficient! We really fancied Malta because it just looks beautiful and intriguing and Zoey’s description of the resort was so appealing, by the sandy beach near a nature reserve, walks and things for the kids. Sounded like pure bliss!’’ Since that day, Zoey Sadowski, with permission from her manager, took full ownership and went the extra mile! She took the initiative, she to assist in organising the wedding preparations and has been busy planning the necessary requirements for the couple including taxis to the wedding ceremony, booking the lunch venue at the resort, organising the bouquets of flowers and hair and nail appointments at the Myoka Spa. Faith Williamson, a local make-up artist heard about the story and offered to do Heather’s wedding make-up at no cost. I personally was commissioned to take some photographs of this beautiful day to share on our newsletter and our Facebook page. Well done Zoey for all this great work! Heather excitedly told us, “We are super excited to be going on this very special holiday to Malta. We both work hard and are looking forward to spending time as a family with our two sons. Stewart and I have been together 13 years in June so, it’s an anniversary too!”

THE HARLEM SHAKE BY AZURE WORDS KIRSTI NEWTON

Working for Azure, there is one thing you can be sure of, that no two days are ever the same! This past few years have seen many a craze sweep the internet what with photos of people lying down, arms straight by their sides, photographed on walls and other strange locations that became an overnight phenomenon known as ‘planking’ - to this year’s more crowd based performances like ‘flash mob’ synchronised dances, springing up in airports and central railway stations. This is where a large group of people arrange to meet at a certain time and place to carry out quirky dance moves before disbanding and walking away like nothing’s happened, leaving an amused and often bemused crowd of commuters in their wake. The Harlem Shake at Azure was the fun idea of IT Executive John Grech who had been fascinated with the crazy dance phenomenon sweeping the Internet since February 2013, where a crowd of people burst into

a comedy sketch performance to the background track of “Harlem Shake” by Baauer. Known as an Internet meme, these frequent concepts spread from person to person via the Internet. Filmed and uploaded to You Tube, the video saw thousands of hits and was a talking point, at many an industry conference in the following months! Azure has built up a strong online social media engagement during the past 18 months and has a robust digital marketing strategy, going forward, led by SEO specialist and Head of Marketing, Sarah Mazzone and were recent winners of the Innovation and Excellence award 2013 from Fractional Life. Azure’s very own Harlem Shake shows a fun young edge to the sales and marketing company, appealing to its existing and also changing, younger demographic. Having a tough day? Tune in to Azure’s Harlem Shake and laugh those stresses away! You Tube link: www.youtube.com/AzureMalta

HOLLYWOOD COMES TO AZURE WORDS GRAZIELLE CAMILLERI

It was all smiles and story telling at the Radisson Blu Resort & Spa, Malta Golden Sands one sunny April afternoon.

The Golden Sands resort has played host to numerous celebrities including international movie stars and music artists including names such as Bob Geldof, La Toya Jackson, Maroon 5 and Enriquez Iglesias. This month, we had great pleasure in hosting three talented, charismatic Hollywood actors and stuntmen; Matthew Marsden, Silvio Simac and Wolfgang Raach. Silvio Simac, Croatian martial arts expert and actor was recently in Malta for a short visit to deliver two martial arts seminars. He was accompanied by British actor Matthew Marsden and Stunt Coordinator Wolfgang Raach. All three sport pretty impressive portfolios including blockbusters like Transporter 3, Dead or Alive, Black Hawk Down and Rambo, roles that some actors can only dream about in their lifetime.

Silvio Simac’s career as an athlete has seen him become Taekwondo world gold medalist, British champion 14 times and European medalist 4 times. Mastering a skill is only a dream for many but Silvio has made it a reality. It is this star quality that has subsequently gained him success landing roles in commercials, TV shows and movies including City of Masks, Last Man Standing, Transporter 3 and the Purifiers. We had the great pleasure to host the very down to earth, Silvio, here at the resort at Golden Sands. He together with Matthew Marsden were both eager to share some of the more lively adventures that they experienced during the breaks on the movie sets, including the one when they mischievously set fire to very powerful fireworks that were given to them by locals on a movie set in Japan. The director was not very amused to say the least, but they nevertheless had a fantastic time laughing about it many months and years later! Wolfgang is a Memberships Consultant here at Azure. When he is not working as a bodyguard for private clients, giving intense boot camp training sessions or acting as a double to Brad Pitt or George Clooney, Wolfgang will be dazzling prospective members with his piercing blue eyes and fascinating stories from his film experiences. Wolfgang breathes fitness and health out of every pore. He is extremely passionate about his career as an

actor. Before the film industry he was a member of the German Olympic swimming team and was German heavy weight champion in Kickboxing with a two Degree black belt in Shotokan Karate. Wolfgang has been recently travelling to Berlin, film set of the movie The Monuments Men that will be released later this year. He has been selected to be the movie double for world famous actor George Clooney! Wolfgang is really enjoying this experience. He

says, “Mr. Clooney is such a pleasure to work with. He oozes positive attitude and professionalism and I get to spend all the free time with him in between takes, so I can study his mannerisms closely” It was certainly an honour for us to have these three stars at the resort. We just cannot wait to meet more celebrities who are so entertaining and down to earth as these three real life Rambos!

GIVE YOUR SKIN THAT WOW FACTOR! WORDS GRAZIELLE CAMILLERI

A visit to the Myoka Spa at the Radisson Blu Resort & Spa, Malta Golden Sands will give you not only the opportunity to feel good and relax but also the chance to enjoy one of the many pampering treatments available. You will also receive useful tips from one of the professional spa consultants, on how to rejuvenate, lift and tone your face by trying one of the latest non-surgical treatments available. WHAT IS THE MESOTHERAPY TREATMENT? I heard about it and being very curious about ways to keep my skin looking radiant during summer when I know I will be socialising more and

staying up late, I wanted some more information, so I went to the Myoka Spa for a free consultation. Mariya, the Myoka Spa manager explained to me what it is and what the benefits are. The Mesotherapy treatment is an efficient, painless and needle free, non-surgical treatment. It is a combined therapy of the simultaneous application of ultrasound, electrotherapy impulse stimulus and a treatment cocktail. This facilitates more precise absorption of cosmetic products, deep into the skin allowing their gradual release, up to 48 hours after treatment. It is very effective for rapid lifting, wrinkle and groove reduction which results in improved skin texture, removal of bags under the eyes and tissue nourishing, instantly. Mariya explained that by the use of the “electrophoresis” technique, amino acids, vitamins and antioxidants are delivered directly into the mesoderm layer of the skin. A Mesotherapy facial is beneficial for anti-aging, sagging and as an anti wrinkle treatment. A body mesotherapy treatment on the other hand helps to eliminate cellulite, to promote weight loss and to eliminate localised fat deposits. The latter will be very interesting for woman who would like to lose some weight alongside exercising.

In brief, the 3 benefits of using Mesotherapy facial therapy are:

YOU WILL LOOK YOUNGER AND BEAUTIFULLY RADIANT. YOUR SKIN WILL FEEL VELVETY SMOOTH, SUPPLE AND RESILIENT ANY FINE LINES WILL HAVE BEEN SIGNIFICANTLY REDUCED

Everyone can try this treatment. It seems to be popular with clients and regular guests who have a special event like a wedding or a special reunion in Malta where photographs are taken, events in which they wish to impress their friends or perhaps their special date and are looking for that ‘wow’ factor. Well, I have booked my treatment and I m looking forward to see the results! For a free consultation and to find out about special member discounts on this treatment contact the Spa directly on: 23561191 (Ext 1191 if you are a guest at the resort)

DIVING IN MALTA’S AZURE WATERS WORDS GRAZIELLE CAMILLERI

One of the most beautiful islands Recently voted by British publication in the world, www.divernet.com as the third best diving destination in the world, the Malta has many temperate Mediterranean waters and abundance of marine life and traditions and underground wrecks are perfect for festivals that draw those in search of crystal clear waters without the hassle of a long journey to tropical shores. tourists back to its shores, time The fish life in Malta is extremely colourful and educational while the and again. The islands of Malta, Comino and Gozo have roughly 21 Mediterranean wrecks to be explored. A few of the top wreck sites include: waters are ideal for scuba 1. UM EL diving. All three Islands offer some FAROUD This wreck is a fantastic experience unique diving every time! On days when it is windy, it really difficult for diving experiences with making off any other parts of the coast, the Um El Faroud is one of the favoured an abundance shipwreck to visit. This is because the Wied iz-Zurrieq valley shelters of reefs, caves the wreck site, where it was su nk after suffering an explosion in the and wrecks that dry dock, in 1995. The Um El Faroud is an impressively large wreck at 115 make diving metres long. The main deck alone is here the 25 metres and the entire ship requires more than one dive to discover the best in the stories, trinkets and the vibe of this huge wreck. Mediterranean.

BARRACUDA

2. THE HMS SUBMARINES Diving into shipwrecks is exhilarating but it is even more fascinating to dive through a historical sunken submarine. The HMS Stubborn sank just off Malta on April 30th, 1946. It lies 55 metres deep, which means there is not much algae growing on it, making it easier to see it in its former glory. The other two are the HMS Eddy and St Angelo. These minesweepers were sunk due to mines in 1945 and they both lie at a depth of 58 metres. The two wrecks lie less than 100 metres apart and are considered to be two of the most popular diving sites off Malta. Divers have listed these on their diving bucket list.

3. THE P29 MINESWEEPER The P29 minesweeper patrol boat is Malta’s latest wreck. This minesweeper was originally built for the German navy but was then used later by the Armed forces of Malta as a patrol boat. The sinking of the Patrol boat as a diving attraction was arranged by the Malta Marine Foundation and sponsored by the Malta Tourism Authority. The P29 Minesweeper was intentionally sunk a reasonable distance from the coast of Malta and now lies 37 metres below the surface. It is easy diving for fit divers and is already gaining popularity as one of the cooler wrecks to investigate.

4. TUG BOAT ROZI The Rozi tugboat wreck that is found in Cirkewwa was sunk in 1991. It was destined to originally be an underwater attraction by a company offering submarine trips. However, the submarine trips stopped operating but the wreck of course remained as an outstanding diving attraction. Lying in a depth of almost 40 metres, the wreck can be seen complete due to the excellent visibility, which are frequently over 25 metres. Since it is quite close to the shore and easy for navigation this dive gives the unique opportunity to combine a wreck and reef dive - all in one. You will likely come across a range of marine life, including Grouper and Barracuda, Moray eels and Dentix fish. Apart from exploring the boat, divers can also approach the reef and enjoy the natural rock formation, which is called “the Arch”.

5. THE BLUE HOLE Situated in Dwejra, in front of the one of the main attractions in Gozo, the Azure Window, is The Blue Hole. Once you enter in the Blue Hole you have the option of going either right or left. If you take the right side you can dive under the Azure. On your way back as soon as you swim under the arch you can explore the large cave on left hand side.

THE DIVING EXPERIENCE WORDS GRAZIELLE CAMILLERI

When one goes diving, one never, or very rarely, dives alone, so that experience is enhanced and multiplied by the number of divers in the group. Divers will agree with me when I say that what makes the diving experience memorable is not only what is seen underwater, but it is the expressions of joy & incredulity, on the faces of fellow divers. Very often, these are divers that have many years of diving experience, divers that have dived the most exotic places in the world including the likes of the Red Sea, the Great Barrier Reef, Maldives and Australia. However, Malta, without coral reefs and without exotic fish, still manages to leave them not only surprised but in awe of their experience!

TOP 5 DIVING TIPS Local Dive company H2o Divers offer some vital tips on how to save oxygen and extend your bottom time during your dive.

1. FIX THE TINY LEAKS 3. Even a small stream of bubbles from STAY a low pressure inflator swivel or an O-ring will decrease your dive time SHALLOW by about 15 minutes, and may also be a sign of more trouble ahead. A mask that does not seal is another kind of leak in that you have to constantly blow air into it to clear out the water. It’s also a source of stress and will have an effect on relaxed breathing pattern.

2. SWIM SLOWLY Swim half as fast as you do now, and you’ll use less air, and have time to enjoy and take in all the surrounding area.

SCORPION FISH

Because your regulator delivers air at around the same pressure as the water, a lungful at 10 metres (two atmospheres) takes twice as much out of your tank as does the same breath at the surface. At 30 metres (four atmospheres) it takes twice as much as at 33 feet. There’s absolutely nothing you can do about that except to avoid being deeper than you have to be. If you’re making a transit over to a deeper wreck or another selenic part of the reef, do it at 10 metres and then descend down, this will extend your allowable dive time at depth, that you would have had if you swam out at the maximum depth at the start of your dive plus you’ll save air.

GROUPER

4. DIVE MORE It is common for the inexperienced and the diver that only dives when on holiday to use more air, so one of the best diving tips for saving air is to simply dive more often. You may not be a new diver, but unless you dive regularly, it is still an unnatural activity. By diving more, you will become more relaxed, and you’ll breathe less. Another way is to undertake extra diver training. The peak performance buoyancy specialty is a great way to enhance your diving experience and your understanding of how your equipment works.

5. CORRECT WEIGHTING If you are overweighted, you have to put more air into your BC to be neutral buoyant. The inflated BC is larger and requires more energy to push it through the water. An extra 4kgs of weight will alter your diving position so you will be less streamlined in the water resulting in even more air use.

SUMMERTIME AND FEASTS

WORDS KISTRI NEWTON

Summertime in Malta brings ‘festa’ season. Cloudless skies are the perfect backdrop for extravagant firework displays, processions and scrumptious local delicacies. The Maltese are known to love a celebration or two, you only have to attend a wedding on this Mediterranean island to see the huge-scale organisation of such an event, with the guest list running in to hundreds. So, it’s fair to say that the warm summer months are inevitably spent outside, dining and getting together with family and friends at every opportunity.

VILLAGE ‘FESTA’ Towns and villages in Malta compete to hold the best ‘festa’ - a traditional celebration marking the anniversary of their respective saint. The honey coloured limestone buildings flourish beneath a red, blue or green

explosion of colourful festoons, arching from balcony to balcony. Statues, plinths and band stands in some areas are raised with cranes and sheer willpower between the residents, who turn out in force every year for the preparations. The week long festivities celebrating the parish patron saint, step up a gear come the weekend, with the evenings hosting elaborate firework displays and confetti thrown from decorated balconies and roofs. Sunday brings the procession of the patron saint, carried on the shoulders of members of the community, accompanied by church bells and the local brass band as they pass through the streets lined with people. The churches are illuminated with hundreds of lights and interior walls are adorned with lavish red damask. It really is a sight to behold and an amazing opportunity to soak up the atmosphere of the local community.

SANTA MARIA In the summer months, somewhere in Malta, a ‘festa’ will be taking place, culminating in the most popular celebrated holiday of the Maltese calendar, the feast of The Assumption of Our Lady or ‘Santa Maria.’

Falling on the 15th August, the date marks the ascent into heaven by the Virgin Mary and is a Public Holiday across the Maltese islands signalling the peak of Summer. With children off school and ‘shutdowns’ in many workplaces, this week is really the time to give in wholeheartedly (if you’ve resisted thus far) and party like the locals do!

FEAST PROCESSION

YELLS, BELLS AND SMELLS... Lord Byron - the famous 18th century poet - once referred to Malta as a country of yells, bells and smells. Over 200 years later, the words still ring true. The sound of summer and celebrating families combines with an orchestra of church bells ringing out across the island mingling with the smell of gunpowder in the air and the heady sugary smell of Maltese Nougat or ‘Qubbajt’. The soft and incredibly sweet mixture of almonds cooked in a thick syrup comes in hard and soft varieties and is synonymous with the village ‘festa’, where you will see it being sold on stalls beside other local delicacies.

FEAST STAND

So get some sleep, charge up your camera and head off into the night and celebrate summertime in Malta – the local way!

HENRI’S CORNER

Dear Members, The Hot Summer Season seems so eager to start after a rather windy patch in the major part of May. In the last issue of Seasons Newsletter, we have embarked on searching for new itineraries for guests to experience whilst enjoying Golden Sands. A place that deserves a mention is Ghar Dalam, (the Cave of Darkness), a prehistorical cul de sac located on the outskirts of Birzebbugia in the southern part of our island. This cave in the south of Malta has remains of animals that became stranded and subsequently became extinct on this island, at the end of the Ice Age. Dwarf elephant, hippopotamus,

deer and bear bone deposits found there are of different ages from about 180,000 to 18,000 years ago. It is also here that the earliest human settlements were discovered approximately 7,400 years ago. A visit to this cave confirms that Malta was a land bridge between Africa and Europe. An intriguing discovery was made of a human taurodont tooth, the same as found in the times of the Neanderthal man. From prehistory to the Maltese Inquisition, (an unfortunate part of our Christian history). The Inquisitor’s Palace in Vittoriosa is one of the few surviving palaces of its kind which once could be found all over Europe. Built in 1530 by the Knights of St. John as the civil courts of the Order, this site served its function until 1571, when the Courts were transferred to Valletta. Mons. Pietro Dusina was offered this Palace as his residence, being the first general Inquisitor. An austere edifice reflecting the rather harsh concept of the Inquisition where physical punishments and public flogging together with torture, were the order of the day. Twenty-seven of the Inquisitors in Malta became Cardinals and two of them elected Popes. This

is another historical site that falls into the new and alternative venues to visit and experience. Heritage trails relating to personalities who visited our small island have also to be explored. Sir Walter Scott lived in Valletta in West Street as a guest of the Royal Navy. When visiting the St. John Co-Cathedral, he marvelled and said, “This is by far the most magnificent place I ever saw in my life”. After spending some time in the Lazaretto for quarantine purposes, he wrote the book called “The Siege of Malta”. He wined and dined in the Governor’s Palace in Valletta and enjoyed the company of his friend Sir John Hookham Frere in Villa Frere in Pieta. Lord Byron left Malta the island of “Smells, Bells and Yells “ for Greece. He lived at the top of Old Bakery Street at Casa di San Poix. He spent quite a lot of time in Malta at the National Library to learn the Maltese language with the help of Abbate Giacchino Navarra. He also found time to relax at the Theatre in the evening, to dine with Sir Alexander Ball at the Palace, to row in Marsamxett Harbour and to court

Mrs. Costance Spencer Smith, which almost landed him in a duel! If you venture out to Attard and walk in the gardens of San Anton, imagine meeting Admiral Lord Nelson and Lady Emma Hamilton on a hot day in May 1800. Exploring new sites for our repeated guests has made us discover more and more about our tiny island and makes us more eager to share this information with you. We are enjoying it so much that we propose setting up a Cultural Club for our guests, in the Member’s Lounge. Finally, I would like to thank Azure’s social media lady, Grazielle Camilleri who assists me in promoting these new tours on the social media pages. So please join the Azure Facebook page www.facebook.com/azure to keep updated with these discoveries. I have just joined Facebook myself! Better late than never! HOTEL REVIEWS “EXCELLENT EXPERIENCE” Mr. & Mrs. Kingston, Marlborough, UK Reviewed May 18, 2013 The Radisson Blu at Golden Sands is a superb holiday experience. The hotel is very well appointed and has first class restaurants and bars. The Spa is very good with a good size pool and the usual Spa treatment rooms. The outdoor pools are first class and the resort boasts a private beach. The bedrooms are modern and well maintained. Some offer sea view, whilst others a view of a camp site (the only bad point) But as we say you don’t spend your holiday in your room.

Lovely hotel and location, staff very helpful and friendly. We had a room looking over the beautiful Golden Bay and enjoyed watching the sunsets from our balcony. The weather was really nice and a big change to the cold in my country. Nice to walk around during the day but at night you have to use a car or a taxi because the nearest restaurants are in St Paul’s Bay and Bugibba. This time we went around the island by cab and I must say it was a pleasure to have a very nice young man to drive us around. The cab was always on time and driver was also our personal tour guide. The name of the company is Platinum Cabs, contact number 7900 0005. I recommend them! I hope to come to Malta again next year and maybe also decide to buy timeshare in your beautiful hotel!

“Can’t wait to return” Reviewed May 11, 2013 This was an amazing holiday, wonderful hotel in perfect location, friendly and helpful staff, and excellent food. Malta has so much history we couldn’t see everything in one week so will definitely go back. The Azure team were very nice and there was no pressured selling at all, in fact we were very tempted to buy into their scheme and may well do so next time. Room Tip: get a sea view if you can, well worth it
