For those of you that think leaving the cold behind means missing out on huddling around singing Christmas carols, then think again. You won’t have to huddle to stay warm but we will be hosting Christmas carols in Swizzles bar on Christmas Eve at 6pm. Come and join in the festive fun and witness ‘The new Choral Singers’ Malta’s top choir who not only perform at various events around the island in venues such as the cathedrals of Valletta and Mdina but whom have also travelled to the UK and Italy delivering fine performances. CHRISTMAS PUDDING RECIPE It’s Christmas time and we all tend to go somewhat sweet-tooth crazy during this season. So our awardwinning chef Jimmy Aquilina has very kindly thought of sharing this scrumptious recipe for his amazing Christmas Pudding with us all! The Ingredients for the pudding are: 185 grms butter 135 grms brown sugar 3 eggs 185 grms prunes 185 grms raisins 185 grms sultana 1 apple grated 95grms mixed peel 90grms bread crumbs 155 grms flour 1/2 tsp nutmeg 1 tsp mixed spice 1/2tsp bicarbonate of soda 30ml brandy 1 lemon/ orange zest brandy sauce 500ml milk 75grms sugar 1 orange rind 30grms cornflour 20mll brandy This is how to make it : Beat the butter and brown sugar until pale yellow and gradually add the eggs. In a bowl put all the dry fruits, brandy and the zests. Set aside. In another bowl mix the flour with the breadcrumbs and the spices. Then gradually, start adding the mixed fruit with the sugar and finally fold in the flour by hand. Place mixture into well greased pudding bowls. Cover with grease proof paper and secure with string. Fill a saucepan with water and put in the pudding on a low heat (bain marie) for four hours approximately, being careful not to let any water enter the pudding or the saucepan to boil dry. This is how to serve it: To serve, reheat the pudding the same method as cooking and serve it with brandy sauce and add some fruits of the season for better presentation. A useful tip do not reheat the pudding in a microwave.

TEAM MALTA WINS FOOD OLYMPICS IN GERMANY GRAZIELLE CAMILLERI

The world’s largest and most prestigious gastronomic competition was held from the 5th to the 10th of October. Out of 45 countries and more than 1,500 chefs participating, Malta was among the teams that obtained bronze medals. I had the pleasure to interview Jimmy Aquilina and Paul Camilleri two chefs from the Radisson Blu Hotel Resort & Spa, Golden Sands, home to the exclusive Azure resort to find out more about the prestigious competition they have just participated in.

“We are extremely happy to have won these awards. We have been preparing for it for an entire month, meeting after working hours, testing recipes and perfecting presentation options. Once we signed up, we were prepared to do everything possible to achieve a medal for Malta so we had to work hard and be open to eachother’s opinion and expertise. All chefs came from different restaurants having their own unique strengths so we took the best of everyone’s ideas to create the menu for the Olympics. We feel extremely rewarded for our efforts especially when we know we were competing with so many other countries who had been preparing for this for over 2 years” Jimmy said.

“We were judged for presentation, taste, combinations and originality”, Paul said. “We also had to be careful to time the preparation for the parade”.

The Maltese team was made up of 10 Maltese chefs. These were carefully handpicked by the Malta Chef Society and have formed together as a team since February this year. This was the first time Malta participated in this event since 2004 and it was also the first time these chefs worked together to create and present these pieces to culinary perfection.

the chefs were expected to cook a selection of dishes for 110 persons within a certain time frame. The menu prepared for the competition included traditional Maltese ingredients including rabbit, pork, grouper fish, carob syrup, fig and nougat ice cream. I asked these two gentlemen whether they would participate in the next culinary Olympics to be held in 2016 if they had the chance. They both said without hesitating that they would love to have the opportunity to participate again. The Culinary World

The Malta team coveted 2 bronze medals. One medal was won for the category cold buffet. The second one was secured for the hot section known as the Parade during which

Cup Olympics will be held in 2014 in Luxembourg so I would not be surprised if we were to hear that they will be signing up for those! All the Azure Malta team and Radisson Blu team together with all our regular guests would take the opportunity to congratulate Jimmy and Paul not only for this excellent achievement bringing home these 2 bronze medals, but for all the great work they do here at the Radisson Blu Resort & Spa day in day out. We wish them all the luck for any upcoming competitions they do dig their talented hands into!

A one-hour Hot Stone Massage Myoka Golden Sands are offering Azure’s members a 20% saving on this treatment.

Stop…Breathe! Call extension 1191 to book your treatment and enquire about the Christmas packages.

HOT STONE MASSAGE FROM MYOKA KIRSTI NEWTON Christmas is a wonderful time of year, choirs of angelic children singing Christmas carols, the mouthwatering smell of mince pies and mulled wine and perfectly wrapped Christmas presents, shining beneath the twinkling lights of the festively adorned Christmas tree. Now you open your eyes and the reality kicks in….your to-do list is becoming a novel, your favoured on-line delivery company has decided that your children’s wish list is ‘currently out of stock’ and the thought of late night Christmas shopping, battling with the crowds of other last minute shoppers, gives you that sinking feeling. Unwritten Christmas cards lay staring at you in a pile on the kitchen side, whilst all around you, friends smugly gloat that ‘I’ve had all my shopping done since September!’

Close your eyes for a moment and count to ten. Everything gets done, it always does, families come together and the smiling excited faces (young and old) that peek beneath the lovingly decorated tree, to see if Santa has indeed read their letters, makes it all worthwhile. Of course if you are fortunate enough to be travelling during this festive time of year, you can leave all the running around behind for one year and think about yourself. This is also a time of year to de-stress and recharge your batteries and what better way to do that than to pamper yourself and be spoilt for an hour or so by the wonderful team at the Myoka Spa at the Radisson Blu Resort & Spa at Golden Sands, here in Malta. We are recommending the Hot Stone Massage, an amazing massage that will not only instantly dispel any stress from your body but this treatment carries on benefiting your body long after you float out of the relaxation area.

Expertly Incorporating the use of black, basalt lava stones into the body massage, this treatment is a must for tired and aching muscles, promoting deep muscle and tissue relaxation. The warmth of the smooth stones banishes lingering stress, almost immediately, allowing your body to relax and the scented oils, to penetrate and nourish your skin. The heat not only relieves any pain and tension but improves circulation and by massaging with the stones, toxins will begin to be released. Hot stone massages have also been known to benefit sufferers of arthritis, fibromyalgia, insomnia and depression. Drinking plenty of water before and after this therapy will assist in the elimination of the toxins. Sleep will come easily the night following the hot stone massage, restoring calmness and balancing of energies throughout your body and mind. You should now be ready to join in the festive celebrations and relax into 2013. GOLDEN SANDS RESORT & SPA, MALTA.

A TO Z OF WHY TO CHOOSE MALTA AS YOUR HOLIDAY DESTINATION KIRSTI NEWTON

Malta is one of those places that everyone can’t wait to tell you about. With some of the most historically condensed areas in the world, there is so much to see and do. Rich in local traditions and mouthwatering food, along with breathtaking scenery and warm Mediterranean waters, whatever holiday you are looking for, Malta will be sure to tick the boxes. AIRLINES - Malta (Luqa airport) can be reached by direct services from a vast majority of European hubs. With around 3 hours flying time from most UK airports, who Flies? Most Major airlines including Air Malta, BMI Baby, Easyjet and Ryannair. BEACHES – With award winning Blue Flag beaches, Malta has some stunning coastlines; secluded coves, tranquil bays and soft sandy beaches are scattered around the island. Where should I go? Home to nine sandy beaches, the North of the island offers undoubtedly the best choice. Check out the beaches the locals visit and drop by Gnenja Bay and Armier for the quieter lesser-known locations. CLIMATE – Probably one of the top reasons people choose to visit Malta is for the wonderful year round climate. When to visit? With over 300 days of sunshine a year, May to October (sometimes even December!) enjoys blue skies and sunshine. A mild winter ensues, bringing bright sunny days along with the odd rain shower mainly in January and February. DELICASIES – With an Italian and Arabic influence as well as traditional Mediterranean, be sure to sample the

local fare. Local Dishes: With Local Bragioli – stuffed beef dish and snails (Bebbux) gracing the menus alongside Pastizzi (savoury pastry filled with peas or ricotta) and Mqaret (sweet date filled deep firied pastry) your taste buds are in for a treat. ELECTRICITY – Travellers from the UK don’t have the hassle of plug adaptors or getting used to a different side of the road as the UK 3 pin plug is used here and driving is on the left. FESTA – The Maltese love to party and do it well! Summertime sees the island come alive with fireworks during the local village feasts (Festa). What is a Festa? Every village and town celebrates, in recognition of their patron saint and streets are lavishly decorated with flags, statues and colourful streamers, celebrations last up to a week. Bands play, and people come together and eat and drink, whilst processions march through the town’s streets. GOLF - Although not renowned generally as a Golfing destination, Royal Malta Gold Club – founded in 1888, offers an 18-hole course Location: Aldo Moro Street, Marsa. HISTORY – With over 7,000 years of rich history on display around the island, dating back to Neolithic times, evidence of Malta in Phoenician; Punic, Roman, Byzantine, Arab and Norman times can be seen in museums and guided tours. All of this before the Knights of St John and the British influence! How Can I see it: Visit the cities by bus, take a harbour cruise, or rent a car and visit the UNESCO sites and museums. KIDS – Great for families with children, the sandy beaches and climate in Malta are ideal for some fun in the sun. Are there any water parks? Splash & Fun Park at Bahar ic-Caghaq is the largest. A younger children’s water area has recently been opened in Qawra and also a small park at Popeye village throughout the summer. LOCATION / LANGUAGE – Malta is pretty much centre of the Mediterranean and 60 Miles south of Sicily. Although Maltese is the official language, English is widely spoken so communication will never be an issue. What’s the currency? The Euro.

MARKETS - There are many markets throughout the week around Malta, they are places to visit where you will get a feel of local life and browse local souvenirs, freshly baked goods or just caught catch of the day! Like the Valletta market and Sunday fish market at Marsaxlokk. What time should I go? The earlier the better, normally, starting around 7am, the vendor’s start packing up around midday. NIGHTLIFE – As well as beautiful beaches and historical interest, Malta is popular with its nightlife scene. The area of Paceville near St Julian’s is home to large selections of bars, clubs and restaurants, where you can dine and dance the night away into the early hours. One of the island’s Casino’s – The Dragonara is located in the area too, should lady luck be looking down over you! PEOPLE - When holidaying here, you are likely to come across the warm hospitality of the Maltese people. Their generosity and happiness is known worldwide, they’ve even topped the poll for the happiest place on Earth so why do they shout? The Mediterranean temperament can be witnessed daily and you’ll see a lot of raised voices and gesticulations – but don’t worry, you’ll normally find this is two people having a friendly chat in that Maltese animated way that only the Mediterranean’s do best! QRENDI – A famous small village in the south west of Malta due to two of its most visited sites; Hagar Qim and Mnajdra temples. RABBIT - or Fenek is often recognised as the national dish of Malta and served in many ways. The most popular, being a stew. SAFENESS – Malta has been named the safest place on Earth, due to its low risk of natural disasters. It is a very safe place for families, to walk around at night and crime is relatively low. THEATRE – Add Manoel theatre in Valletta to your list. Reputed to be Europe’s third oldest theatre, a range of cultural evening take place throughout the year. UNESCO SITES – Three magnificent UNESCO World Heritage sites of Valletta, The Haflieni Hypogeum and Megalithic Temples that include 7

Megalithic temples, are said to be the oldest freestanding stone structures in the world. VILLAGES – Explore the local villages for a true feel of the Maltese way of life. Look up and see the traditional balconies and limestone walls. Try the local bars for a spot of lunch; you can be assured of a warm welcome and delicious fresh food that doesn’t cost a lot of money. Where shall I start? Mgarr has a small centre and three Megalithic temples! Pop in the Farmer’s bar and try the local Hobz Biz Zejt (Bread filled with tomato paste, olives and herbs) – delicious. WALKING – Explore on foot, the island’s hidden nooks and crannies to discover the hidden beaches and quaint side streets that cars will never reach. Countryside trails through fields carpeted in hues of yellow defines Malta in the springtime. What do I need: good walking shoes, a camera and a sense of adventure! XLENDI –. A beautiful bay lined with waterside restaurants and bars on the neighbouring island of Gozo. Great place for swimming, snorkelling and diving. How do I get there? A car and passenger ferry operates regularly throughout the day from Cirkewwa (just past Mellieha). In 15 mins you can be in Gozo. YACHTING – The Rolex Middle sea mile race, held every year, normally around the end of October, is a fantastic spectacle for boat enthusiasts. Beginning at Grand Harbour, Valletta this 606-mile race passes Sicily, out to the Aeolian and Egadi Islands, returning back to Malta and the finishing line in Marsamxett Harbour. ZOO – Malta does not have an official zoo as such but in the south of the island there is the LWS animal park that provides a petting and feeding experience through rescued and donated animals. You can also visit various bird and wildlife parks and swim with the dolphins at Mediterraneo Marine Park.

1 . DIVING & SNORKELLING The crystal clear waters of the Mediterranean are perfect for a leisurely snorkel. The warm waters are enjoyed by an amazing array of fish including parrotfish, barracuda, octopus, grouper, eels, rays and many more. Divers have a multitude of shallow and deep dives to enjoy; exciting wrecks from WWII sit alongside more recently scuttled vessels, creating an underwater habitat for some of the most amazing marine life. Popular dive sites include: Underwater statue of Christ – facing the St Paul’s Bay Islands Beaufort Fighter – 10 miles by boat from Sliema, Rozi Tugboat – scuttled wreck near the ferry port of Cirkewwa HMS Maori – British battleship damaged in WWII near Fort St.Elmo With the crystalline waters around the Blue Lagoon and Comino to explore and the famous Blue Hole at Dwejra in Gozo, It’s no wonder that Malta was voted the best diving destination in Europe and 3rd in the world behind Egypt and The Maldives by Diver Magazine’s readers. Jot It Down: If you prefer reef diving to wreck diving, visit the small caves and parallel reefs at Ghar Lapsi, close to the Blue Grotto. Spectacularly beautiful, this secluded cove is popular with novice as well as experienced divers. Look out for many species of fish including eels and rays and if you’re lucky – seahorses!

2 . BEACHES IN MALTA Malta is blessed with miles of scenic coastline. The inviting clear waters are easily accessible from some of the island’s rugged shores and sandy beaches shelve gently into shallow clear waters. The North of the island is home to the most popular sandy beaches, including:

Ghadira Bay - Malta’s longest sandy beach. Located in Mellieha and popular with families due to its extended shallow waters, this Blue Flag beach has restaurants and sunbed hire, along with watersports and roadside parking, although can be busy in summer. Golden Bay (Tal-Mixquqa) adjacent to the five star Radisson Blu Resort & Spa, Golden Sands and awarded Beach Of Quality, this beach is one of Malta’s finest, with its golden sand and backdrop of cliffs, countryside and dunes. Ghajn Tuffieha (Riviera) - is probably the most unspoilt Blue Flag beach in the area, maybe due to the 100 steps you have to walk down to access it? Don’t forget your camera for the incredible sunsets! Gnenja Bay near Mgarr, Armier and Little Armier, just past Mellieha beach are 3 more sandy beaches that are frequented by locals and visitors searching for that quieter ‘off the beaten track’ feel. All are accessible by car or local bus and are definitely worth checking out. Jot It Down: If you rise early and don’t mind the steps down, Paradise Bay (On the road to Cirkewwa) is a magical spot. Snorkel along the rocks in the azure waters. A sandy beach, sunbeds, a shop, showers and a restaurant serving a good menu of reasonably priced food offers everything you’ll need for a relaxing day at the beach!

The Grand Master’s Palace – The house of government since the days of the Knights. Visit the Armoury home to one of the largest collections in the world. Lascaris War Rooms visit the command centre of Malta during the war. Casa Rocca Piccola Discover Maltese aristocratic traditions in this charming 16th century 50 room privately owned palace. Valletta Waterfront A photographic delight. Stop for refreshment in one of the bars and restaurants lining this historical quay where cruise ships enter the port and gateway to Valletta. Jot It Down: For stunning views out over the Grand Harbour and the 3 cities, visit Upper Barrakka Gardens. If you’re there around noon you can witness the firing of the cannon from the Saluting Battery below.

3 . HISTORICAL VALLETTA Malta has always been a showcase of 4 . HISTORICAL MDINA Step back in time to the original living history, you only need to stand in Valletta and Mdina and look up to see stunning architecture and design, going back centuries. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Valletta was built by the Knights of St John in the 16th century, initially as a refuge for pilgrims. Grand Master La Valette drew up plans for a fortified

capital of Malta. This medieval city was almost rebuilt by the Knights after an earthquake in 1693. Known as the ‘silent city’ Mdina is the closest example today of how you would imagine a noble Maltese city used to be. Intricate streets lead you past some of the finest examples of baroque architecture in Europe.

Don’t Miss: Palazzo Falson – Unique historic house and collections, fabulous rooftop cafe Mdina Cathedral – Impressive frescoed walls and adjacent museums Mdina Glass – Watch hand blown Maltese glass being made and browse the shop for incredible pieces of this colourful glass. Jot It down: No visit is complete without a slice of homemade cake from Fontanella Tea Gardens. The views from the bastion walls, out across Malta are magnificent.

5 . HISTORICAL SITES

Malta may only be 17 miles long by 9 miles wide but you will be hard pressed to find a similar country with evidence from 7,000 years ago, on display. With the temples described as the oldest freestanding structures in the world and designated UNESCO World Heritage sites, visit some of the most impressive sites that this Mediterranean hideaway has to offer. Mnajdra Temple – A complex of 3 temples. The 3rd is largely intact and probably the most visually interesting, with its pitted decoration. Hagar Qim Temple – Dates back to c.3600-3200BC, discovery place of the ‘fat lady’ statues Tarxien Temples – 4 megalithic temples located near the south of Malta fascinate with intriguing spiral designed wall carvings. Valletta also named as European Capital of Culture 2018 KIRSTI NEWTON If you haven’t visited Valletta yet, then you’re most certainly missing out on the true Malta experience. A UNESCO World Heritage site, this city exudes volumes of history and has recently been crowned European Capital Of Culture 2018. develop an exciting programme of events with a strong European dimension and that the title can bring significant long-term cultural, economic and social benefits for the city and its surrounding area. I wish every success to Valletta.”

It is no surprise then that Valletta has been named European Capital of Culture (ECoC) for 2018. This initiative began in 1985 and 40 cities have so far held the prestigious title bestowed upon them by the Council Of The European Union.

This is a great title to win and can only mean more and exciting things for the capital, the people living in Malta and those wishing to visit, not only in the run up to 2018 but long afterwards too.

Regeneration can be seen in areas of the city, opening up new areas for the public to see. With a presence on Facebook, Valletta 2018 foundation is keeping abreast of social media and what the people really think.

EUROPEAN CAPITAL OF CULTURE WHAT DOES THIS TITLE MEAN? Owning a title like this will most certainly assist in raising further, Valletta and Malta’s international profile, attracting visitors from all across Europe. The Valletta 2018 foundation set up before the initial bid for the title, has been responsive in hearing the island’s ideas on its revered capital and has been working closely with the population to introduce more activities involving the local community. This is clear to see already and will continue to grow and gain momentum in the run up to 2018. In a statement, Androulla Vassiliou, the European Commissioner responsible for Culture said: “I congratulate Valletta on its successful bid. I am happy to see the enthusiasm generated in Malta for the European Capital of Culture title. I am confident that Valletta will

HOW TO GET TO VALLETTA Valletta is easily reached from everywhere on the island and is a well served route with the local bus service from Arriva. Obviously if you rent a car, you can explore further but parking around the capital can be tricky, so best to use the large car park just before the entrance to Valletta. There is also the hop on hop off bus tours that navigate the island and the red south tour stops frequently at Valletta, allowing you to jump off and pick up the next bus which normally comes along every 30 minutes. My personal favourite hassle free way to reach Valletta is to pop across on the ferry from Sliema front. It is inexpensive and runs frequently throughout the day, you get a chance for a few camera shots of the island from a different angle and within 10 minutes, you’re walking up the hill which takes you into the city centre – just in time for a spot of lunch.

H.M.S. ILLUSTRIOUS SAILS IN TO GRAND HARBOUR KIRSTI NEWTON

The grand H.M.S. Illustrious sailed in to Pinto Wharf in Malta’s Grand Harbour, this week, possibly for the last time before being decommissioned in 2014. The second of three light aircraft carriers, H.M.S Illustrious was launched on 1st December 1978 by HRH The Princess Margaret and on the 18th June 1982, was led into service being immediately deployed to The Falkland Islands, to protect the area. The RAF airfield was being repaired so the ‘lusty’ as it was affectionately known to its crew, served as an airfield. After the retirement of its fixed wing Harrier II in 2010, the illustrious operates as one of the two Royal Navy helicopter carriers. After an on-board reception with the Earl and Countess of Wessex, the public got an amazing chance to see first hand on board the Royal Navy vessel. Over two consecutive afternoons, both people living in Malta and visitor’s to the island queued up to walk up the gangway of this 22,000 ton vessel. Just waiting to go on board was a wonderful experience, with children transfixed by the sheer size of the ship, incomparable to any model they had at home in their toy boxes! Alongside wartime veterans, some of whom had served on the previous Illustrious, who regaled people in the crowd, with their wartime stories and experiences of what life was like back then, serving upon such a ship.

VISIT MALTA’S BIRDPARK

A MYRIAD OF BIRD SPECIES AND OTHER ANIMALS

GRAZIELLE CAMILLERI While this beautiful wetland area is a sanctuary for a large variety of bird species, BirdPark Malta is also home to other lovely animals, such as kangaroos, wallabies, antelopes, meercats, deer, snakes, reptiles and a donkey. What impressed me most is the fact that BirdPark Malta was not originally intended to be a commercial enterprise. It is the result of many months of work and study done by Kevin, the owner, who has been slowly nurturing his passion and setting up this wonderful bird refuge for the past ten years. When the park

opened its doors to the general public in 2011, both locals and foreigners could truly appreciate the genuine work and passion that has gone into the place. The park provides a wonderful protected wetland habitat in Malta, an island that is very limited in providing natural opportunities for a selection of birds to integrate and live together. I am surprised that it has not been intensely promoted and it is by word of mouth that people are getting to know about it. That makes it one of Malta s best kept secrets! A visit to the BirdPark Malta is educational and fun day out for both kids and adults alike. I went on a Saturday afternoon and just loved it ! There are over two hundred bird species to admire! These includes beautiful flamingos, pelicans, swans,

AZURE HR MANAGER VISITS

ETHIOPIA ON MISSIONARY WORK KIRSTI NEWTON Krystle Inglott has been with Azure for 7 years and is the company’s HR Manager. Since a young age, Krystle always wanted to do missionary work and help children in some of the world’s poorest areas. Throughout our busy lives there is always time to sit and reflect, set goals and dream about achieving them. For a lot of people these goals remain just that – dreams. For varying reasons, most unintentional, we put obstacles in our way – the time factor, the money factor, the ‘i just can’t’ factor, they are still obstacles all the same. This year Krystle achieved her goal by travelling to Ethiopia, along with Living Waters. Here Krystle tells us a little about her amazing experience and journey in one of the most populated places on the African continent, a country located in the horn of Africa. How long has this been a dream of yours? Since I was in Secondary school. We had a teacher who used to always collect money, stamps or any other second hand item to sell to raise money for poor children in Africa, and I have always admired her dedication in helping those in need, this fueled my desire to do missionary work, even further. What made this year, the year to go? A good friend of mine told me how she had joined the team of Living Waters, a group supported by the Catholic Church. They travel annually to Ethiopia to help the poorest of the poor and I quickly jumped at the opportunity to join. Who and what is Living Waters? Forming part of Tabgha Foundation in Malta, the Living Waters Mission Team is a youth voluntary, missionary group whose aim is to raise funds to sponsor basic needs projects, for the poorest of the poor, who need aid, in developing countries. They have been helping the poorest communities in various parts of Ethiopia for the past 13 years, through various missions, with the focus being on building water catchments – a sustainable system which filters water directly from its source, in order to provide continuous clean water for the community. This of course gives innumerable health benefits. During the delegation of the projects, which are then built by the locals and coordinated by the members of the church, the team of volunteers through Living Waters, visit the communities to evangelise, teach the children and help out in clinics etc. The projects are seen through from start to finish before moving on to the next and are then revisited, year after year, until total completion. “There are more than a billion people in this world suffering from absolute poverty, not having the basic needs that we all take for granted –

food, shelter, safety and clean water. This thought always made me feel uneasy, lucky in a way that I was born in the west, but feeling equally guilty that there are children starving somewhere while we waste more food and water than we consume.“ Tell us a little bit about what you did alongside the organisation. The team was headed up by Manuel Chetcuti, who has been ensuring that over the past 13 years that the money raised is distributed wisely, on projects which are sustainable and which will benefit and improve the lives of whole communities, rather than merely a few. We spent 2 weeks in Arramo visiting communities and identifying the areas most suitable to build water catchments. Since the water catchments clean water directly from the springs, with separate filters, the area needs to be close to the spring and built downwards, using gravity to achieve a constant flow of water. The area also needs to be accessible to the people. One particular area is near a school and if living waters can raise enough funds to build the water catchment here ( approx €5000) this would provide clean water for the children and the entire community of around 2,000 people, for years to come. In Arramo and also Addis Ababa, Ethiopia’s capital, I had the opportunity to spend time in clinics and a hospital which are both run and managed by nuns and funded solely through charity. Along with the sisters, we met with the youths, discussing the important issues of sex education and family planning. “…Many of us try to help less fortunate areas of the world through donations and many, like myself, decide to go and try to help the people living in complete poverty. I was blessed with the opportunity to be able to go and do missionary work in Ethiopia and during this trip, had to forgo many ‘essential’ commodities. However, amidst all the poverty, I was enriched by the beauty of the people, in both character and spirit and it made me question, who is actually the poorest? Us or Them? Where did you stay? In Arramo, in a compound run by two extremely hardworking sisters; sister Chitra and Sister Grace. A godsend to this community, they manage to run a clinic, a church and a few classrooms which when possible are used to educate the children. They face the challenge of electricity and phone lines going down, whenever it rains, ceasing communication to the outside world. The only road in is in very bad condition, making accessibility limited and costly. But their work is extremely important and gives hope to the people who still live in a jungle, with no work and no means to earn a living, no possessions and the constant struggle to find food to feed their children and

themselves. What was the hardest thing for you to see, whilst you were in Ethiopia? During my time away, I witnessed, first hand the consequences that people had been living with by drinking dirty water that they had to collect from miles away. Some of the children had swollen stomachs due to the parasites. This broke my heart to see.

KRYSTLE INGLOTT

The region of Arramo is a beautiful location set amidst the highlands surrounded by lush forests. People were living in small huts made of wood and cow dung. On our way there due to a big storm, I was soon seeing the harsh reality of what these people had to face on a regular basis due to the power of nature. Most of their homes were destroyed and washed away by the rain, some were desperately trying to gather the few belongings they had, in vain. Others just stared with quiet acceptance, clearly showing that this incident was not unprecedented. The time I spent in the clinics and hospitals was an experience that will stay with me for a long time. It is hard to put into words, the feelings, I had during the time I spent there but I was overwhelmed by the constant challenges the nuns go through every day in order to make ends meet and give proper care to the endless list of patients. …and the most rewarding? We finished the trip by visiting Bahir Dar, where Living Waters had just finished a housing project of 55 homes, giving 300 people shelter. Before this build, the people had no homes and due to extreme regularly occurring storms and their often, flimsy wood, houses were continuously destroyed. This project and all the others not only gave them a roof over their heads and clean water to drink, but also dignity and above all – HOPE. Hope that life can get better, that there is someone thinking about them and they haven’t been forgotten, and that the future is not only hunger, unemployment, illness and disease. My heart was aching by the time it was ready for me to leave, wishing to return in the future. It is not only poverty that you witness but mostly the love that the people have for one another and innocent smiles and gratitude towards life and faith in God. These values remain a priority and should be an eye opener to me and to anyone who is lucky enough to experience something similar. How do you think this will affect how you live your life? Visiting Ethiopia and its wonderful people I know now more than ever that happiness in life is not only about possessions, power and money but that peace within yourself, whilst making the more important things in your life a priority. The people you

love, your family and your health are what true happiness is all about. Something we are all aware of maybe, but something we also all so easily forget from time to time. If like me upon reading this, people would like to do a little to help, what can they do? The Living Waters Missionary team who visited Ethiopia are raising funds by launching a calendar for 2013, showcasing the heart warming images, taken during their visit to Ethiopia. Each calendar month has been sponsored by a participating company., including Azure. This has kick started the fund raising for the water catchment ventures, mentioned above. If you are coming to the resort and would like to give a donation to the cause, please visit the reception area where the calendars will be available. Should you like to make a larger donation to help more people in Ethiopia have clean water to drink , then you visit the Tagbha Foundation website. W W W. A Z U R E . C O M . M T

FROM THE MEMBER’S CLUB LOUNGE – HENRI DIACONO With the long hot Summer drawing to an end, I undertook the exciting adventure, during the Autumn season, to explore in conjunction with the Ministry of Tourism the possibility of developing new itineraries in tourism destinations around the Islands. As our owners are definitely repeat guests, this will allow me to present new sites both as a cultural diversification, along with first hand experience of the historical aspects, that our various towns and villages have to offer. So in January 2013, after a meeting with Dr. Mario de Marco, the Minister of Tourism, Environment and Culture, we are hoping to host a meeting with the Ministry and Local Council representatives, at the Member’s Lounge, so our Resort will be the first to embark on this interesting project. Each week at the Member’s drinks, Mr Ernest Barry will announce the town or village to be visited the following day. I am hoping that this will give an insight into the more unexplored, but nonetheless hidden treasures, that our islands have to offer visitors, especially those that have experienced a lot of Malta’s historical charm.

Recently we caught up with Patrick Gooch who intrigued us with the launch of his novel ‘Mosaic Deceptions’ His wife is encouraging him to base a future novel on Malta, with its rich history. So watch this space! I, along with the lovely Grazielle, also spoke to Comte and Comtesse Arnaud Dulong de Rosany, who visit us every year and impressed us with stories of their ancestors and Napolean.

What a brilliant hotel. We came to Malta for our 25th wedding anniversary, having come here for our honeymoon.
