Find unique, local artwork during Festival of the Arts, March 8 & 9 Southern Arizona Arts and Cultural Alliance and Oro Valley Marketplace host a community-minded event supporting Southern Arizona artists and businesses Anna Webster first began preserving pieces of nature in an effort to forever cherish a day in her life – her wedding. “I wanted to make sure I had that piece of memory for a lifetime,” Webster said, and she did this by embalming the flowers from her wedding bouquet, gaining inspiration for her artwork for years to come. Her floral designs will be displayed during the spring Festival of the Arts – Saturday, March 8 and Sunday, March 9th from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. – featuring 100 artists and exhibits, food vendors and entertainment. Presented by Southern Arizona Arts and Cultural Alliance, the show takes place twice a year at Oro Valley Marketplace, southwest corner of Oracle Road and Tangerine Road.

Webster rarely uses dyes to enhance the color of the flowers, since their vibrancy is captured during the coating technique. “I never thought I would be working with flowers,” Webster said, but she has always had a love for nature in general, learning from her plant pathologist father and following an education in biology. She began with the tropical island flowers and has since added cacti and wildflower blooms from the Sonoran Desert to her collection. “I love working with stuff that captures nature and represents the beauty that nature gives,” she said. Festival of the Arts This weekend, Festival of the Arts will feature plenty of activities for youngsters as well as creative artwork and great food from local vendors.

Webster, influenced by the delicate orchids of Hawaii, uses flowers as a medium in her jewelry and accessory art for her company, Blue Jean Parrot. She starts by drying the flowers then coating them to create a glass-blown look to the final product.

Attendees can find handmade art in watercolor from Brummermann’s Art and Science, metalwork from In My Garden, mixed media creations from The Laffingstock, woodwork from Holeywood Productions and much more.

Flagstaff Urban Trail System (FUTS) If you go up to Flagstaff, which I highly recommend for a weekend getaway, hiking or biking the Urban Trail system should be on your bucket list of things to do. The city of Flagstaff, with the help of many volunteers and non-profit organizations, have created over 50 miles of paved and unpaved trails that help people commute around town and enjoy the outdoors right in their own backyards, the last survey recorded over 78% of people using the trail system last year. I like to take the Arizona National

March 15th there will be a micro brew festival called

Scenic trail which is also part of the 800 mile trail that connects Arizona, Utah, and Mexico (this is actually the only section of the trail that crosses with an urban area). There is a really cool “Toe of the Flow” labyrinth in this section of the trail if you begin off of Lone Tree road. This labyrinth is a

beautiful place to reflect, rejuvenate or just watch the rising or setting sun. The FUTS project has another 80 miles of trails planned for this trail system to make it a total of 130 miles. Half of the wide, shared-use trails are paved and half are hard packed dirt. They are used by everyone for hiking, biking, running and commuting around the little college town of Flagstaff. The weather is exceptionally gorgeous and warmer than usual right now, so get up to Flagstaff and take a trek this season.

Groomers and Growlers up at Snowbowl as well, that would be a lot of fun to attend after a long day of hiking and biking. Also it is not too late to get in some Winter sports, as I had mentioned last week. The base at Arizona Snowbowl is about 44 inches of snow with a recent snow of 22 inches in the past week. To see pictures of the urban trail system and the labyrinth snowbowl or any other Arizona hiking check out my Facebook page ‘Take a Stroll with Niccole’. Happy trails!

That is where she learned about this situation. One day when she went to leave the prison a young girl grabbed her shawl looked up and gave her this really big smile. It just touched Pushpa’s heart so much that when she left she knew she had to do something to help these children.

“So she just started to, one by one, slowly bring these children in. And when they come into the home, they

are just so blessed and enjoy being there. Pushpa makes sure that they get a good education. She gives them lots of wonderful food - she is a wonderful cook - they do crafts, and they learn all about taking care of the home and being a part of a family. So the environment that she is able to provide for these children is amazing. It is truly a blessing.” – Angela Bernhard Thomas

“Waiting for Mamu” follows internationally-lauded social worker and 2012 CNN Hero of the Year award-winner Pushpa Basnet as she helps children whose parents are sent to prison and, lacking any other guardians, are locked away along with them. “I met Pushpa [Basnet] really by chance. We were at the same dinner and ... I listened to her tell this story with such compassion and passion for her work. At first I thought that I had misunderstood what she was saying. I couldn’t believe that there were children in prison. So I asked her right then and there, ‘Can I make a documentary film about this’ I think she thought I was joking but ... I was truly committed. I didn’t really know how I was going to fund it or how I was going to go about it but the story was just so incredible that I had to do it.” – Thomas Morgan “[Pushpa] really is the most important piece. One of the most amazing things about this story is that Pushpa started this when she was 21 years old. She was studying social work in school and ended up visiting a prison.

Still haven’t seen that movie that your friends have been talking about? Film Columnist Randy Montgomery recaps what you may have missed in 140 characters or less.

‘The Monuments Men’ ~ There are hits, and then there are misses. Clooney and crew missed with this one big time on all levels. Chalk this one up at history. Grade: C-

top 10 Movies “Mildred Pierce” (TV, 2011): Joan Crawford made the role iconic, but Winslet gives complete freshness to the part of the self-sacrificing mother. “Revolutionary Road” (2008): In Winslet’s

‘The Lego Movie’ ~ Creative, ingenious and managed to capture the heart and spirit of the toy. Funny and heartfelt and the title song is unforgettable. Grade: A+

‘Non-Stop’ ~ While silly and quite unbelievable, this action-action packed thriller who-dunn-it is a ton of fun and worth the price of admission. Grade: B

‘RoboCop’ ~ There have been too many remakes of 80’s films to mention. The original was somewhat of a classic in its own right, this is not. Grade: C-

reunion with her “Titanic” leading man, Leonardo DiCaprio, it’s to both stars’ credit that they’re equally effective together.

“The Reader” (2008): In an Oscar-nominated performance, Winslet is stunning as the older woman whose intense World War II-era liaison with a youngster comes back to haunt her.

FILM! SECTION

MOVIE TWEETS! Kate Winslet’s

“The Holiday” (2006): The movie may seem lightweight, but Winslet ideally captures her character’s heartbreak and renewal of hope.

“Little Children” (2006): An excellent Winslet is part of the fine ensemble in a saga of disintegrating relationships and new connections. “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” (2004): Winslet revels in her offbeat character in this comedy about heart and spirit succeeding over erased memories.

‘Tim’s Vermeer’ ~ Penn & Teller have managed to create an engaging documentary despite what could have been a very dry subject matter. Grade: B

‘The Wind Rises’ ~ Whimsy combined with serious drama and thematic moments. A fine animated feature that caught my attention when screened last year. Grade: B+

ALSO OPENING THIS WEEK

“Iris” (2001): Winslet splits the title role – with Judi Dench – as writer Iris Murdoch, whose husband stuck by her through times bright and dark.

“Titanic” (1997): Well, of course. The history-based blockbuster that made Winslet an international star also made her and Leonardo DiCaprio an iconic screen couple for all time. “Sense and Sensibility” (1995): The Jane Austen classic about sisters and their romances furnished Winslet with a great role. “Heavenly Creatures” (1994): Directed by Peter Jackson, Winslet’s memorable first film recounted the true story of two young women who would do anything to preserve their friendship.

Remember Mama’s delivers until 2am every day of the week. You might not think those who can hit, kick or shoot can also slice, dice or saute, but the opening episode of “Chopped Tournament of Stars,” a five-part special edition of Food Network’s “Chopped,” might convince you otherwise. Premiering Sunday, March 9, it brings together celebrities from different walks of life to compete head to head in cooking challenges. The winners from the first four episodes face off for the championship in the finale on April 6, with a $50,000 grand prize going to the charity of the victor’s choice. The premiere episode “Sports Stars!” pits four ex-athletes – 1999 World Cup heroine Brandi Chastain, NBA enforcer Charles Oakley, and Olympic gold medalists Greg Louganis and Jackie Joyner-Kersee – in various challenges. Alex Guarnaschelli, who is a judge on the episode with Marc Murphy and Geoffrey Zakarian, was impressed but not surprised by the athletes’ skills. “Understand that nutrition plays a huge role in athletes’ lives,” she says, “and one of the most nutritious ways to eat is to cook your own food. So they definitely brought that, Brandi in particular. She cooks for her family; she loves food. That really comes through. When people love food and they love cooking in their everyday lives, they tend to excel in the kitchen.” But Guarnaschelli was caught a little off guard by the case of nerves that came over Chastain as the competition wore on.

He’s able to somewhat control it, but at the same time, he doesn’t want to take medication because it stops that flow of creativity. In a way, he thinks of it as an asset. Obviously, personally, there are times when he doesn’t think that, but there are some really amazing people – thinkers – who have this. The women of ‘Nashville’

“Nashville” is that true rarity – a musical drama in which actors sing and look fabulous doing so. ABC’s Wednesday series deals with adult situations and breaks away for full songs, featuring three very different women, all country singers, flaunting very different styles. “I did a ton of research looking at templates for country music stars who would be models for Rayna Jaymes or Juliette Barnes,” costume designer Susie DeSanto says of the characters played by Connie Britton and Hayden Panettiere. This season, Scarlett (Clare Bowen) has a much larger role and a distinctive style. “Nashville is small but sophisticated,” DeSanto says. “It is definitely a Southern place. It is because of the music scene here and the songwriters and the Opry.”
