David Copperfield was in town a couple weeks ago, and no one was disappointed, as he dazzled the Phoenix audience with his amazing showmanship, humor, and incredible feats of magic and premonition. Getting up close and personal from the 8th row was an impressive experience, but it still didn’t reveal the secrets of the “greatest magician of our time’s” sleight of hand; just ask the lady who saw his pet scorpion pick the ace of hearts right out of the deck in front of a near capacity crowd at Gammage auditorium. There were other tricks and magic that would keep the faithful guessing all night. How about a trillion to one odds on a group of numbers picked randomly from
the audience that would actually match two license plates of David’s dear grandfather from years ago. How could he have known? Or the famous duck Webster appearing and disappearing at a moment’s notice, with fluids and feathers to boot. Or the new motorcycle or car appearing with wheels turning right before your eyes...was there something in the air at Gammage?? The most off-the-charts scene of the night occurred when 13 audience members, selected by using floating balls passed through the Gammage auditorium like beach balls, were asked to participate in the night’s grand finale. These unassuming participants were whisked on stage, seated in chairs together on a platform, and simply vanished into thin air! Luckily for them, David decided to bring them back to Gammage and “all’s well that ends well”. Thanks David for making Phoenix one of your stops along the road.

Guys and Dolls Revival Rolls a Lucky Seven! By Nicholas Connell
Roll up your sleeves and get ready to roll at Arizona Broadway Theatre’s revival of the Broadway hit classic Guys and Dolls now playing in Peoria. Director Joe Martinez was the perfect match for this musical comedy full of charm and humor, as the opening night audience remembered what fun this musical “can do”! From the opening scene with Nicely Johnson, Benny Southstreet and Rusty Charlie, all played to the hilt by Michael Mott, Jesse Burger and Timothy Joyce, we were in for some old fashioned fun and romance with these guys and dolls. But there are souls to be saved in this time of gambling, horses, and show girl performances, and Jeannie Shubitz as Ms. Sarah Brown, with her Salvation band, had just the right persuasion to make the sinful return to the fold. Jeannie’s voice was vibrant and lovely all evening. Her main objective arrives in the form of Sky Masterson, played subtly by Mark DiConzo. Mark sang and danced his way into Ms. Brown’s heart, as the two harmonized together in “Follow the Fold”, “I’ll Know”, “Havana” and “I’ve Never Been in Love Before”.
There’s more dames to go around in this show-and-tell comedy, and Erin O’Neil as Adelaide was cute and hilarious while trying to get her man, Nathan Detroit, played by the persistent and kind Mike Hedges, to the alter. Erin convinced us in “Adelaide’s Lament”, “A Bushel and a Peck”, “So Sue Me” and “Take Back Your Mink” that even Nathan would finally fall for her charms. But guys will be guys as Sky and Nicely would turn the tables in “The Oldest Established”, “Luck Be a Lady” and the crowd pleasing “Sit Down Your Rockin The Boat”. These crapshooters were rolling winners all night and the dames loved it! But in the end, the dolls show the guys how to really make this love work as Sarah and Adelaide put the final touches in the truth be told songs, “Adelaide Meet Sarah” and “Marry That Man Today”. This company of talented voices finally gave in to settle the score in “The Happy Ending”, as wedding bells rang for “Guys and Dolls”. This is a show full of great scenes and characters, with music, dancing, and singing that were perfect all night. This is a classic musical revival everyone will love! This hysterical farce caused a scandal when it was first produced under the reign of Louis XIV and still amuses today, three and half centuries later. Presented in the Richard Wilber version, this is considered a masterpiece of verse translation.

While the locales in many scenes looked real, others looked as if a high school drama club built the sets for the interior shots. etc. Shane West (A Walk to Remember, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen) plays Max Peterson, a 20-something computer security technician who is on a job assignment in Bangkok. He is about to leave and head back to his home in Nebraska when he receives a mysterious package from DHL (FedEx and UPS must not have wanted anything to do with the film). Inside the package, a hi-tech new phone starts spewing out commands that save Max from disaster and then eventually helps him win numerous casino games in the Czech Republic. Max’s sudden streak of good luck raises the eyebrow of casino security staff, which just so happens to be led by an ex FBI Agent from the US. Enter into the picture a hot undercover agent (Tamara Feldman) and a current FBI Agent (Ving Rhames), who just happen to know each other from previous work. It seems as if these cell phones are popping up all over the world and have been hacking into sensitive government computers. The premise- the government’s tendency toward “big brother”- is intriguing enough, but the storyline doesn’t have enough uniqueness to capture the viewer’s attention. The Echelon Conspiracy would have been a “great” film if it had been a straight to DVD release.
By Stan Robinson Watchmen premières on March 6th, and is the latest comic book/graphic novel to be brought to the big screen, and will open on regular theatre screens as well as the super format IMAX. In 2008, comic/ graphic novel superheroes like The Dark Knight, Ironman, and The Incredible Hulk saved Hollywood by funneling $1 billion and counting into box offices and studio bank accounts. When Thomas Edison premièred his Vitascope projector in 1896, the motion picture industry was born. Through the years it has continually improved its technology and has grown exponentially, with the basis for many of its projects being the printed word. Anything in print could potentially become visual images: plays, poems, fiction, non-fiction, and comic books. When I was growing up in the 1950’s, television was just beginning to take hold. Most U.S. households were not yet able to afford the new “box” with the moving pictures. So, we as kids besides playing sports- read a lot. We read everything; novels, magazines, and our favorite, comic books. We also spent Saturdays in the movie theatre. News events were presented in the form of 15-minute newsreel capsules. And to our delight, movie serials, with many based on our comic book heroes, were shown along with the regular featured movie! The first serials I remember looking forward to seeing each week were simply
titled Batman, and had chapter numbers. The first set of the serial, made in 1943, had a total of 15 episodes (260 minuets), about 18 minutes each. The serial starred Lewis Wilson and Douglas Croft as Batman & Robin. Columbia Pictures also made a second set in 1949, titled Batman and Robin, with Robert Lowery and John Duncan as the dynamic duo. These serials are available on DVD at amazon. com and many other on-line outlets! Columbia Pictures will bring The Green Hornet to the big screen on June 25th, 2010! Michel Gondry is in negotiations to direct, and the stars are Seth Rogen and Stephen Chow, with the screenplay also written by Rogen and Evan Goldberg. This big screen version, like the 1960’s television series that starred Van Williams as Britt Reid, sets the stage for Reid’s emergence as the superhero. In the TV series, Martial arts icon and actor Bruce Lee starred as sidekick Kato, which eventually led to Lee’s prolific, though tragically-short, film career. The Green Hornet is based on the comic book as well as the 1930’s radio show, which ran for almost 20 years. Watchmen: Latest in Hollywood’s Love Affair with Comics
Frozen River – Worth the Repeat Review By Randy Montgomery
Rarely does a film come along that warrants a second review upon DVD release. Space is precious in our film section, and we like to feature as many different titles as possible. Yet a film was released last year that was so powerful, that it is worth receiving a few additional column inches now that it is available for viewing at home. Frozen River not only ended up on several of my “Top 10” lists at the end of the year last year, but lead actress Melissa Leo was also honored with an Academy Award® nomination which she unfortunately did not win. First time writer/director Courtney Hunt delivered one of the strongest films of the year with River. Little-known Melissa Leo gave a truly moving performance as struggling single mother Ray Eddy, whose part-time job at a local dollar store barely feeds her two sons. Her husband has left the family behind, and his gambling problem has left them broke. Their single-wide trailer is cold and is in need of demolition. With only a few thousand dollars left to pay off a new double wide, Ray is scrimping and saving every dime. A chance encounter with a local out of work Mohawk Indian woman named Lila opens up a risky opportunity to earn enough money to buy her new home. Another unknown actress, Misty Upham also gave a powerful performance playing Lila. AZWeeklyMagazine.com

Living on the snowy, desolate border of New York and Quebec, life is a struggle. Each woman has her own set of problems, and they have little in common other than their tough life challenges, but the two work together to earn enough money to turn their lives around. The Mohawk Reservation of Upstate New York is not your typical film shoot location, which makes Frozen River even more moving. The movie brings to the screen two women who are struggling to survive like many Americans today. Leo and Upham’s onscreen chemistry of love and hate is classic filmmaking. Frozen River received little box office success, but it is an unforgettable film that should be viewed at least once. March 5th - March 11th, 2009

Digital Dave’s Zen Lesson: Digital Music Enlightenment Gone are the days when we just flipped in a cassette tape (or 8 Track) and let it play. Today, we have so many choices for enjoying music, but what is the best one? I’ll try and shed some light on the many options we have and point you in the right direction. There are three basic ways to listen to digital music: 1- You can buy the digital music file, download it to your device, and listen to the songs; 2- Rent digital music files and pay a subscription fee, similar to the Netflix model with DVDs; and 3- Have the music streamed to your device via the internet.

Slacker is my favorite streaming music site. Not only does it have a great website to stream music to your PC, but you can also stream the music directly to an iPhone, Blackberry, or their own Slacker portable device. Slacker has a slick, modern looking website and is simple to navigate; it remains one of the best ways to listen to Internet radio. Pandora is a close second for internet radio and still rocks. Those of you with an iPhone should download the mobile app immediately; lots of great music and very few commercial interruptions. Hard to beat for free.

The iTunes Store is still the best option available today. iTunes now offers high quality 256 Kbps, DRM-free tracks from all four major labels and they have one of the biggest media stores. The interface is simple and highly integrated with MP3 players and the iPod/iPhone. iPhone users can even buy the music over the AT&T 3G cellular network (which is pretty cool). There are three tiers of pricing for MP3 tracks: $0.69, $0.99, or $1.29 for each song. Second place in the music purchasing category goes to Amazon MP3. Amazon is DRM-free and has a great MP3 store that is easy to navigate and has one of the best shopping experiences of the bunch. You can easily listen to the songs from their site prior to purchasing. No subscription required, and high-resolution album art is included with each track. Download manager automatically adds songs to iTunes or Windows Media Player library. $.89-$.99 per song; $5.99-$9.99 per album.
Renting Music (Subscription Service)
Rhapsody is a digital music service that lets you listen to whatever you want, wherever you are — without paying per track. Rhapsody membership plans start at $12.99 for the basic subscription and $14.99 for an unlimited plan that lets you load your portable MP3 player and take your music with you. Rhapsody remains an excellent subscription music site and now offers Verizon Wireless integration, even if it doesn’t quite have the user interface perfected for purchasing music over the fast EVDO network.

Napster is a not-so-close second place for the subscription based service crowd. Napster does offer a Web-accessible jukebox and unlimited downloads for portable players and lets you stream music and personal playlists on any PC, no software required, and the Napster To Go subscription is still a great way to pack a portable player with AZWeeklyMagazine.com

Big Bill ‘Get in My Belly’ Nelly’s Review of the Week Capital Grille Sets Service Standard; Incredible Food, Too
As a former resident of a Washington, DC suburb, Rosslyn, VA, I thought a trip to one of the area’s more noteworthy contributions to high-end culinary excellence was in order. It had been 9 years since my previous visit to The Capital Grille’s flagship establishment at 601 Pennsylvania Ave (the Secret Service is still answering for how I got that close to the White House), but the taste of that dry-aged cow candy left a strong enough impression at the time to ensure a future visit. I and a dinner companion much too good-looking to be feasibly paired with me by outside observers walked in the door around 8:30pm on a Thursday; usually the best time and day (any weekday) to avoid the conventional dinner rush while not having to sacrifice prompt, comprehensive service: Any night server is prone to that ‘Oh, great, and I thought I was gonna get outta here at a reasonable hour’ mindset, would we have walked in at 10:45 on a Saturday night, 15 minutes before weekend closing time. But soon after meeting waiter Chad Richardson tableside, it was apparent that the professional, sincere, and robotically-efficient staff would have displayed no such tendencies should we have been so careless, partly because constant activity and a precise division of labor told a story of shared obligations, which takes the pressure off one person to perform. A hostess led us to the table, there was one guy filling waters, another presenting our wine, and Chad visiting frequently enough to make sure we were properly accommodated.

The latter determined the restaurant’s high-end reputation as much as the former, by implementing a subdued, intelligent, interactive approach from its staff. Eye contact is big here. Chad addressed the menu more as a presentational guideline, and delivered his spiel with knowledge and nuance. Though some prefer a minimized server role in their dining experience (we were appropriately offered an escape clause preceding his presentation), I enjoy departures from the menu being presented as a static, kitchen PR piece, and like to decide my option for the night based on verbal exchange if the server and establishment encourage it. We ordered a bottle of ‘06 St. Francis Red Zin; I chose the Dry Aged Porterhouse; and my guest the small Filet Mignon. For a side, the Au Gratin Potatoes came as a big enough portion, Chad assured us, that two to three people would be sated. The meat was immaculate, and had to be, based on the lofty prices (hence the infrequent trips!), the trademark aging process, and the established reputation behind the Grille’s nation-wide success and continuing expansion. But the potatoes were a sub-$10 ultravalue. Flavorful, perfectly layered, and with a crunchy outer covering of fried onions, this would be my bar option were I meeting a client to close that not-so-big deal. There isn’t much more to write than that my 2nd experience at the Capital Grille, about 3000 miles away and a decade later than the one and only DC visit, will set me up with ample anticipation for the 2018 dinner, wherever I find myself. If you make a list of hard-core off-road vehicles, brands like Hummer, Jeep, and Land Rover come to mind. The Toyota FJ Cruiser belongs on it too, because it has what it takes to hit the dirt. There are two basic versions to choose from. First is the 6-speed manual rig, which has a full time 4-wheel drive unit, with low range gears and locking differential. I had the automatic 5-speed rig, featuring 2-wheel drive and part-time 4-wheel drive with low range. I also had the optional “Off Road” pack for an extra $1,375. It includes bigger tires/wheels, locking differential, and Bilstein shocks. So equipped, the FJ glided over the roughest terrain at speeds I wouldn’t dare try with other rigs, and did so smoothly. And with those giant tires, traction was so good, I rarely needed the 4-wheel drive engaged, let alone the low gearing. I can’t imagine using the locking differential unless you got stuck. Unfortunately, you can’t buy the off road pack unless you also purchase the $2,175 luxury option, with a list of power items we don’t need. Drawbacks? The visibility is limited due to body design, but, hey, it sure looks good! I also noticed this is the same basic 4.0 liter engine used in other Toyota trucks, but they require regular fuel, while the FJ wants premium. This results in horsepower increase from 236 to 239, and torque from 266 to 278. Not much increase in power, but big increases in fuel costs. Regular can be used, but with a big power loss. One option I would avoid at all costs is the daytime running lights. This keeps the headlights on whenever the engine is running. At night, this attracts bugs when charging the battery, and drains it more if the charging system fails; not good ideas in the wilderness. Deleting it will save $40. But it wouldn’t make much difference in overall price, which goes from a basic $24,000 to a loaded $30, 372.

I grew up in Indiana and moved to Phoenix 3 years ago. I was always surrounded by music my entire life; I was in concert orchestra, jazz band, and played guitar, then started making my own music and remixing songs 2 years ago. I started going to shows introducing my music to promoters, and that’s when I started getting booked.
What’s the funniest thing that ever happened while performing?
I was playing in the Midwest and the last show that I played, during the last song the speakers caught on fire. The crowd loved it

What’s the biggest misconception people have about DJs?
Some people think that DJs just push play, but the majority actually put in work.
What will people hear when they listen to your music?
I’m gonna be honest: my left deck spins Fergie and my right deck is a loop of Jesus himself. My music is the electro that beats up Hollywood dance and steals its lunch money. I play everything you want to hear.
If there were a “Golden Rule” for being a DJ, what would it be?
Function over fashion. People should learn to DJ before they DJ.

So, what have all of you been up to? Have you been out to spring training yet? How about sitting on the patio of a bar or around the pool of a hotel? At the least, you must’ve called your friends back East to brag to them, right? Well, the Night Owls have been doing all of that and more, and starting THIS weekend, there is no excuse to not get out and enjoy the MANY events that are going on around Phoenix. Keep reading to find a small snippet of what happened, what’s happening and what will happen in the Valley. International Pop Overthrow: For the first time, coming to Phoenix from March 6-8th, is a music festival that has taken place throughout the U.S. and Canada in cities like Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, San Francisco, Boston, Seattle, and Liverpool, UK at the home of the Beatles, the Cavern Club. It’s known as the International Pop Overthrow Music Festival (IPO), and features great pop and rock bands from throughout the world. The best part is it brings in local talent and groups as well. The three-day IPO Festival will be held at Hollywood Alley and has a line-up of more than 20 bands from throughout the U.S. and Europe. You may get a chance to catch the next big thing at IPO as past performers who have gone on to major label success, including Kara’s Flowers (A.K.A. Maroon 5), Phantom Planet, and The 88 (one of my favorites). This year’s performers include We Should Be Dead (from Limerick Ireland), AM Interstate (Oregon), Baby Scream (London, England), and Tommy and the High Pilots (Santa, Barbara California). They have some very good local acts too including Sugar High, The Breakup Society, Crash Street Kids, Rich Hopkins, The Luminarios, and The Love Me Nots. B-Train Bash: On the heels of the amazing Cardinals Super Bowl run, wouldn’t you like to
hang out with some players and other celebs? Bertrand Berry, a.k.a. B-Train, is holding his fourth annual “B-Train Bash” on March 2021 with a couple of events. The first, “The Tropical Illusion Gala” will be held on the 20th at Hotel Valley Ho and will feature a cocktail reception, silent and live auctions, and music. Tickets are $375 per person. On the 21st B-Train will host a celebrity-laden party at Devil’s Martini—Old Town. Tickets to this one are only $10 per person from 8 – 10 p.m. and $10 for guys, with no cover for ladies after 10 p.m. The best part is that all of this is for charity and will benefit the Bertrand Berry Foundation, which will give charitably to Childhelp, The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, and the Mable Dean Scholarship Fund. Basically, they collect tickets that are going to go unused and provide them free or discounted to the more than 26 million veterans and active duty service members in the United States. Music Festival Updates: Have you heard about the Chicks with Picks Festival set to be help at Tempe Beach Park on the 21st? It is the first time for this one and has grown from a local Cave Creek festival to something bigger, which is great; big acts too including Michelle Branch, Jessi Colter and Sarah Buxton, plus local acts. In addition to the music, they’ll have food and drink, a Kids Zone and a VIP area with food and drink prepared by Mad Coyote Joe. Moving forward, they really have a chance to make this something big and uniquely Arizona. Tix are $25 and more info at azchickswithpicks.com. Other music festival news is that the McDowell Mountain Music Festival has announced The Flaming Lips as a headliner. It is widely accepted within U.S. jurisprudence that “ignorance of the law is no excuse”.1 To that end, knowledge is always power, and seeking out knowledge is always a wise course of action in protecting your interests, those of your family, and those of the community. Adultery is a crime. It is a crime to litter. It is a crime to walk your dog in public with him/her off his/her leash in certain cities. It is a crime to knowingly leave your spouse destitute, if you are in a position to provide for his/her means. The person who does your nails has to have a license to do so. If they do not they are committing a crime. It is a crime to knowingly open someone else’s mail without their permission. If you work as a “handyman” and undertake projects for clients that exceed $1,000 in value you are committing a crime. It is a crime to offer or expose for sale mislabeled goods or services. It is a crime “if, in connection with the promotion of the sale of property or services, such person recklessly causes to be made or makes a false or misleading statement in any advertisement”. It is a crime for a doctor to fail to disclose to the police details regarding anyone he/she may have treated for “gunshot wounds, knife wounds or other material injury which may have resulted from a fight, brawl, robbery, or other illegal or unlawful act”. It is a crime to work as a barber without being duly licensed. If you don’t get your vehicle emissions tested when required, you are committing a crime.

Dear Coach, I have a huge problem--- I am desperately in love with my roommate’s boyfriend Michael. He hasn’t said anything to me but I can feel the sexual tension between us. I tag along with them often just to be close to him. Jennifer my roommate is a great girl but lately she has asked to spend time alone with Michael and to free up the apartment from time to time. I don’t want to ruin a friendship but I really like Michael and feel that I have much more to offer than Jennifer. I don’t know what to do.
I can tell by the tone of your email that you are angry with women. Not all women are like that. (I will admit there are the Scottsdale Plastic women). Since you live on the west side why don’t you try another zip code--- you’ll save gas and frustration in the process. You may even want to talk to a counselor about your anger issues with women. I have seen men like you, who are angry and who can maintain for a date or two and then they can no longer contain their resentment. You may not want to hear it but I will say it anyway---You are the common denominator in all these mishaps. Get some therapy for your anger. Women are great, when on a date be in the moment and leave your expectations at home---you might just have a fabulous time and find someone special you can really spend time with. Good Luck!

Readying for ’09 NCAA ‘Big Dance’
There’s no doubt about the fate of this year’s ’08-‘09 ASU Sun Devil Basketball team, which was mysteriously left out of last year’s NCAA Tournament by a selection committee that instead allowed U. of Arizona to compete for the title despite losing twice to ASU and holding a worse conference record. The Sun Devils are currently ranked #11 in the ESPN/USA Today Poll and #14 in the AP poll, higher rankings than PAC-10 leader Washington and runner-up UCLA. Evidently, ASU has made an impression this year on the right people, with two wins over the Bruins and the Wildcats enough to push them into the Top 25 despite doubling up on losses to the Huskies and Washington State Cougars. The last two losses to
these teams came in back-to-back OT disappointments in late Februrary, but if ASU finishes out strong against Stanford and California at home this week, Valley sports fans might see the Sun Devils grab as high as a #5 regional ranking for March Madness.

Ex-Cardinals DE Antonio Smith made the most out of his Super Bowl XLIII opportunity to impress, using an 8 tackle, 1 sack performance to secure a $35 Million, five year free-agency deal with the Houston Texans, where he will play opposite feared sack-master Mario Williams. Though Smith didn’t put up gaudy defensive numbers last year (41 tackles, 3.5 sacks), he is recognized by NFL talent evaluators as a versatile, freakishly strong pass rusher who is also solid against the run. QB Kurt Warner, who turned down a recent Cardinals offer of $20 Million over 2 years, is reportedly talking to the San Francisco 49ers. He and agent Mark Bartelstein will seek a deal that pays the aged, though obviously effective passer and leader, $14.5 Million per year, the salary average of the 5 highest-paid signal callers in the league. Many people know rejection is a big part of the fashion and modeling business, however, Rachel makes sure not to let her nerves get the best of her.

“I get both nervous and excited before castings,” she confides. “I do feel relieved when I book them though!”
Standing 5’9½ with vivacious red hair, porcelain skin, and innocent freckles, Rachel Niu greets the world each day like it is her runway. One of nine children (six older brothers and two younger sisters), Rachel says, “A part of me has always wanted to model; I just didn’t know how to embrace it when I was a young, awkward, skinny little girl.” Clearly her gorgeous looks have worked in her favor, as she was signed with SIM Agency of Mesa nearly three years ago. Her sister-in-law was already signed with the agency and told Rachel that they were looking to add some new faces. She sent in her pictures and “bada-bing, badaboom, I was signed within a week.” As for other aspiring models out there, Rachel urges them to be confident and sure of themselves. “Do whatever it is you have to do to make your look for work you, and most importantly, don’t change
Judging from her lengthy list of experience, relief must be a common feeling for Rachel. You may have seen this popular face in Valley fashion gracing newspaper pages in numerous Dillard’s ads, or maybe you saw her in über stylish Rolf’s Beauty and Hair Salon window fronts throughout the city. For now, modeling is something Rachel likes to do for fun on the side while she continues going to school at Arizona State University’s Walter Cronkite School of Journalism & Mass Communication. “I make school my first priority,” she says. “If I could travel out of the country, I would totally do it! I’ve always wanted to see the world, and if fashion takes me there, so be it. Being a full-time model would be rewarding, but that will have to wait until I’m done with my degree.” If she ever gets the opportunity to walk the red carpet at a fabulous Hollywood event, Rachel says she wouldn’t mind having someone like Johnny Depp on her arm. Back Pain: Going Beyond the ‘Ouch’

She’s a diminutive woman, barely five feet tall, but possessed of a voice that could wrest tears from a stone gargoyle — crystalline and radiant, redolent of the simple yet powerful truth of the heart. That voice has made her one of the top selling artists in the field of world sacred music. Amid the swelling ranks of devotional divas and mantra mamas, Snatam stands tall. Snatam will be performing at the New Vision Center, 9659 N Hayden Rd. in Scottsdale, on March 19th, from 7 to 9pm.

The music she performs is mostly of her own composing. Her divinely melodic songs are based on traditional Sikh mantras. But to these Snatam adds her own lyrics in English — simple, heartfelt verses that express the personal meanings these sacred syllables hold for
her and help the audience forge their own emotional connection. Onstage, Snatam is ably supported by accomplished musicians. Guru Ganesha Khalsa handles the guitar with effortless grace, slipping easily between chordal rhythms and mellifluous leads; and Manish Vyas is a world class tabla player from India, whose rhythms take you on a musical journey that flows like a sacred river under the sweet melodies. Snatam mainly accompanies herself on harmonium (Indian pump organ), but also plays violin and guitar. The harmonium and tablas ground the sound in Punjabi Sikh musical tradition, but the music also has a decidedly Western flavor. Snatam grew up in an American Sikh family, and her music reflects the totality of her background. One can even detect a slight country lilt as her voice soars into the upper reaches of her impressive range. GuruGanesha, for his part, is a self-confessed Deadhead, which may account for his near clairvoyant ability to goad and guide the group’s inspired jamming on the music’s open-ended structures. Creepsville EP Not Metal, but Fun Regardless By Stephen Wilkinson
Image can be something that can either attract or detract. Bottom line, if someone’s got the goods, the rest doesn’t matter. I was pleasantly surprised when I popped this in as I expected something other than what blared out of the speakers. Creepsville’s new 6 song EP is chock full of Rob Zombie spoken interlude type influence, but that’s where that comparison ends. Simply put, this is not metal. It’s high energy, upbeat rockabillystyled music with spooky overtones, yet still maintains a fresh edge comparable to some of today’s established rock acts. Imagine The Munsters hosting a block party; these guys would be playing it. Just as Johnny Cash sang about shooting a man just to watch him die while keeping it fun, these guys do the
same with “Undead Rebels Of The Night”, “Adonis Of The Dead” and “Werewolves Of Creepsville”. If you’re into goth, rock, metal and rockabilly, definitely give this a spin. Phoenix- The Sanderson Ford Lincoln Mercury Volvo Music Series welcomes the legendary Temptations to Celebrity Theatre at 8pm on Friday, March 6th. The Temptations’ amazing legacy includes four Grammy awards, numerous gold and platinum albums, and an induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. An essential component of the original Motown machine, the group was invented by Berry Gordy. They began their musical life in Detroit in the early sixties. It wasn’t until 1964, however, that the Smokey Robinson written-andproduced “The Way You Do The Things You Do” turned the guys into stars. An
avalanche of hits followed, many of which, “My Girl,” for instance, attained immortality. Other revered recordings included “Papa Was A Rolling Stone,” “Just My Imagination (Runnin’ Away With Me),” “I Can’t Get Next to You” and “Ain’t Too Proud to Beg.” Over the years, the Temptations suffered a series of tragic losses and personnel changes. Mesa- A contemporary folkie renowned for her expressive, crystalline voice, singer/songwriter Jewel was among the most successful female performers to dominate the pop charts throughout the 1990s.
