By: Erin Roediger “I have heard multiple times not to chew on ice, but I am not sure what the big issue is about. So what is the real reason behind everyone thinking chewing on ice is so bad?”-Cruch-AHolic “Chewing on ice is not a good idea because the pressure caused by chewing on hard things like ice can cause small micro fractures to occur in the enamel of our teeth. And some people may even find it highly annoying. Now, I understand that sometimes chewing on ice can be addicting and feel good. A few reasons this happens is the cooling effect of the ice, giving you a numb sensation, which to some feels nice. Others enjoy the brief moments of pain caused by the pressure dispersed into the ligament

that holds the tooth in the socket. So while it may feel good in the moment, you can cause permanent damage. The micro fractures I mentioned, over time, can take in bacteria and lead to decay. Sometimes the micro cracks will expand and break portions of the crown off the tooth. On more rare occasions, cracks will develop and expand on to the root of the tooth; this type of crack is often noticed because it becomes painful when chewing. All of the damage must be fixed by a trip to the dentist for a filling, crown, or worse case scenario an implant. My best advice: no chew for you. For more information on better oral health or how to repair damage from chewing on ice, please visit our website www.ismiledentists.com” - Ryan McAffee, D.D.S

ABOUT THE FILM

‘Better Living Through Chemistry’

‘The Grand Budapest Hotel’

Sam Rockwell plays a straight-laced pharmacist whose uneventful life spirals out of control when he starts an affair with a trophy wife customer (Olivia Wilde) who takes him on a joyride involving sex, drugs and possibly murder. (NR - 91 minutes)

Ralph Fiennes plays a legendary concierge at a famous European hotel who befriends his lobby boy (Tony Revolori). The story involves the theft and recovery of a priceless Renaissance painting and the battle for an enormous family fortune. (R 100 minutes)

Stan: What comes to mind as the overall theme for ‘Better Living Through Chemistry’ is ‘Refreshingly Zany’ as Sam Rockwell delivers a character with a ‘Dr. Jeckel and Mr. Hyde’ persona without the viciousness of Mr. Hyde, just the personality altering factors that too many pharmaceuticals could have on one’s normalness. Bravo to writer/directors David Posamentier and Geoff Moore for an interesting view of what just may be the reality for some of those walking around among us. Joseph: In “Better Living Through Chemistry,” star Sam Rockwell goes from friendly neighborhood pharmacist to completely unhinged pill-popper - a journey that is absolutely amusing to behold. The fact that the flick’s story is significantly different than those found in most cinematic fare is an added bonus, but the real draw here is Rockwell going off the rails in tremendously entertaining fashion ( just as he did in “Choke,” “Confessions of a Dangerous Mind” and “Moon”).

Randy: Wes Anderson’s brand of comedy has really started to grow on me. Having not been a fan of his work prior to ‘Moonrise Kingdom’, I was eagerly awaiting this release. Maybe my sense of humor has changed over the years, or maybe I just appreciate his work more, but ‘Budapest’ did not fail to entertain. The dry-off beat humor really worked with the story and the setdirection and cinematography added to the mix. Tilda Swinton’s make-up and transformation is enough reason to see this one. Joseph: There’s eccentric and then there are Wes Anderson films. And then there is “The Grand Budapest Hotel,” which is in a class all by itself. The new comedic caper may be the writer/director’s most visually mesmerizing movie to date - but it is also his least accessible as it tells a story that seems to go on and on without any particular direction. It is clearly a large step down from “Moonrise Kingdom, but one could never regret seeing it simply because of its innate uniqueness.

For ‘Out of Sight’ (1998) casting George Clooney, Jennifer Lopez, and Ving Rhames represented noticeable U-turns from author Elmore Leonard’s conception of the characters: respectively, a 50 something, a blonde and a white redneck.

BET, YOU

DIDN T KNOW! by Stan Robinson

Akira Kurosawa’s classic ‘Seven Samurai’ (1954) was a tribute to the Westerns of John Ford. The story has been retold as ‘The Magnificent Seven’(1960), space mercenaries in ‘Battle Beyond The Stars’(1980) and flea circus entertainers in ‘A Bug’s Life’(1998).

The following quotes were pulled from interviews conducted by AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s film columnists with talent speaking on behalf of movies recently released in theaters.

Writers/Directors Geoff Moore and David Posamentier (‘Better Living Through Chemistry’ By Joseph J. Airdo

“In a movie like this where there is sort of the subject matter of all of this stuff going on, I think that it is very easy to come off like we are trying to make some sort of statement about something dealing with drugs or whatever but we are really not. We are storytellers. When we set out to write the script, we started with the character of Doug and sort of built this world around him. “This just so happened to become his world. And that is really all we are trying to do - tell the story of Doug,

his wife and Elizabeth, who are each in sort of their own orbit, and follow them on this little bit of a journey. I think what we want the audience to walk out of the theater thinking is ‘I know things didn’t wrap up in a pretty little bow but I am glad to know that these people are headed for a better place.’ “The plot of the movie is ultimately about people who intersect in life and, while they don’t stay together, they have adjusted each other’s journey in a way that it is going to be very

beneficial. It is more a story and less a statement on this. But I think that [Jane Fonda] says it best in the movie: You can’t help everybody but everybody can help somebody. And that is a big part

Normally, in my restaurant columns, I write about some establishment that has struck my fancy, and that I feel compelled to share with you, for whatever those reasons may be. This week’s restaurant review is slightly different. Inspired by the unbelievably perfect weather we’ve been experiencing lately, I feel compelled to do my duty to get you out enjoying the fresh air as much as possible, so this week I say: Get outside. Walk outside. Play outside. Bike or climb outside. But, most importantly, eat outside. That’s right, folks. Do yourself a favor, stop by a sandwich shop, let them make your picnic, so you can enjoy one of Phoenix’s many beautiful parks while shoving your face with deliciousness that someone labored to create. My two suggestions this week is for Central Phoenicians, and East Valley residents. If you’re living in Central Phoenix, you should take a jaunt down to Pane Bianco. From the creators of legendary pizza bistro in downtown Phoenix, Pizzeria Bianco, comes this happening sandwich spot that has a very limited menu like its pizza cousin. Decisions are made somewhat easier here with the choices of only three sandwiches to choose from. There’s the fresh mozzarella, tomato, and basil sandwich (their best seller); the chicken salad sandwich with house stone ground mustard, gala apples and arugula; or the Sopressata sandwich, which has aged provolone and wood-fired caramelized onions. All sandwiches are served on homemade, woodfired focaccia bread. They also have a sandwich of the day, which varies, along with a few pizza and salad options. If you decide to enjoy one of Pane Bianco’s lunch dishes, you have a plethora of parks to dig your feet into the grass, as you sit under a shade tree, and enjoy your food at. There’s Steele Indian School Park, virtually across the street from Pane Bianco. There’s Encanto Park, just a few miles south west between Thomas Rd. and Mcdowell Rd. on 15th Ave. Or, there’s my personal favorite, Margaret T. Hance Park, which lies between Central Ave. and Third Ave, literally

above the I-10 freeway (yup, the I-10 tunnel goes under the park). The treat to to Margaret T. Hance Park is that it’s adjacent to the Japanese Friendship Garden, a huge Koi Pond and park that offers serene Asian beauty in downtown Phoenix. Now, you can’t bring food into the Japanese Friendship Garden, so eat at the park (literally 10 feet from the Garden), and then go for a stroll around the pond. Admission to the Garden is $5 for adults. Children under 6 are admitted for free.

If you’re in the East Valley, head on out to Kneaer’s Bakery and grab one of the many delicious loafs of bread—my favorite is the cinnamon swirl, it’s to die for—or one of the freshly sliced turkey sandwiches, made from real turkey, you know, the kind you take out of an oven. Not the slimy sandwich meat found in the Oscar Meyer packet. They serve an assortment of Panini style sandwiches, like the turkey and artichoke heart one. And, they also have salads galore, like the Orange Citrus Salad, made with spring mix lettuce, orange, sunflowers, cranberries, bacon, balsamic vinaigrette, and a blend of cheeses. Now, where do you take your loaf of bread, salad, and sandwich? I say head out to the edge of the city, which isn’t really that far and go to the Granite Reef Damn park on the bottom of the Salt River. If you take Power road north until it curves east and turns into the Bush Highway you’ll run right into it. It’s the closest natural water source in Phoenix and it’s really not that far of a drive. You may even see wild horses, cows, birds, and other wildlife that calls the river area home. Want to fish while you’re out there? Great. Want to kayak or canoe? Go for it. It’s a beautiful place to escape the hustle of the city, and it’s only a short drive away. Now, I must warn, you’ll need a forest parking-pass to legally park there, but you can pick them up for $6 at many nearby gas stations, or look at the U.S. Forrest Service website here: http://www.fs.fed. us/passespermits/ for more information. Regardless of where you’re going to eat, grab something delicious and eat it outside while you still can, before the sweltering Phoenix heat melts us all like watches in a Picasso painting. And, as always, let me know where you’re eating on Twitter @tinodefranco.

Based on Charles Dickens’ beloved novel Oliver Twist, this boisterous musical features memorable songs like “Food, Glorious Food,” “Consider Yourself,” “Where Is Love?” and “As Long As He Needs Me,” and timeless themes, including the

search for love, the triumph of right over wrong and the hope for a better world. Oliver! premiered in London’s West End in 1960, scored three Tony Awards for its Broadway debut in 1963 and was made into a six-time Oscar-winning musical film in 1968. CROSSOVER SENSATION

36

The 2014 Subaru Outback 2.5i Limited is a superior crossover SUV that will garner its fair share of automotive awards By Curt Blakeney Subaru’s Outback has been drawing rave reviews for years in the crossover SUV segment. And justifiably so ... it’s reliable, well-made and stays on the cutting edge of technology. Subaru sales have been on the rise for the past five years, and the Outback is their topselling model. The 2013 was the first year of the current design, and there are only minor cosmetic changes made for 2014. I was always fond of the Outback, but those changes in 2013 make it perhaps my favorite small crossover SUV. I really like the restyled front end, headlights, grille, front bumper and fog lights, that give it a more rugged appearance than pre-2013 models. Chassis enhancements improved both ride quality and agility, all the while maintaining 8.7 inches of ground clearance. The Outback is offered in three trim levels: base, Premium and Limited. We test drove the 2.5i Limited. Recommended options include the Alloy Wheel Package, which adds 17-inch alloy wheels, 225/60 R17 allseason tires and fog lights, and the EyeSight driver assistance system.

Under the Hood: Subaru’s double-overhead-cam (DOHC) 2.5-liter FB series Boxer engine is a thing of beauty, designed for increased performance and fuel efficiency. It cranks out 173 hp and 174 lb.-ft. of torque, while maintaining 24 mpg city/30 mpg highway. The Lineartronic CVT and AWD drivetrain, which features 6-speed manual mode with steering wheel paddle shifters, accelerates from 0-60 in 8.8 seconds. Looking for more muscle? The Outback 3.6R is powered by a 256-horsepower, 3.6-liter 6-cylinder Boxer engine. Inside the Cabin: The Outback is a two-row crossover, offering comfortable seating for five. It’s roomy: total passenger volume is 105.4 cu. ft. and maximum cargo capacity is 71.3 cu. ft. (with the 60/40 split rear seatbacks folded down). Its interior design is simple, comfortable and functional. A single instrument cluster faces the driver, with the center part of the dash sweeping down to join the console on the tunnel. The touchscreen infotainment system features a 7.0-inch LCD display, GPS navigation system, Bluetooth and Sirius Radio. As expected, the Outback is exceptional in safety, rated as “superior” in the new IIHS Front Crash Prevention (FCP) test program. Vital Stats MSRP: $33,030 (as tested) Engine: 2.5L 4-cyl Output: 173 hp/174 lb.-ft. 0-60: 8.8 seconds MPG: 24 city/ 30 hwy

A Taxing Situation taxes on the entire amount, so if you’re the one holding the hot potato make sure you complete a 5754 form. You will only owe taxes on your share of the jackpot.

March brings fun times like Mardi Gras and St. Paddy’s Day, but it’s also the time to gather bits of paper and grumble through what you owe Big Brother. I find that the faster I collect all my income and deduction data the better I sleep. If you live in Arizona you’re allowed to write off your losses against what you won. So, the only thing you have to worry about is your federal returns. Here are some tips for helping you during tax time. Thresholds: If your game is either; video poker or slots then you probably already know that you’ll get a W-2G form any time a single jackpot is $1,200 or more. A matching copy, of course goes to the IRS. If your game is keno then the W-2G is given for Jackpots of $1500 or more. If you wager on Pari-mutuel pools, including horse and dog races, your winnings are subject to withholdings, but only if the amount is both more than $5,000 and at least 300 times as large as the money bet. Casino Records: Almost every casino will gladly send you a win/loss statement for the calendar year; in fact many will offer you a free diary to record your own notes as a back-up. The important thing to remember is that they can’t send you what they don’t have. So if you’re one of those players who erroneously believes a player’s card is keeping you from winning here’s another good reason to always use your slot club card. I have even talked to people who keep big wins from their spouse, including their copy of the W-2G. When tax time comes you’ll be stuck paying on your gambling winnings and won’t have a record allowing you to write off your losses. Keeping Records: Keep detailed records on big wins and losses, especially if you play at scattered casinos while traveling - Of course you’ll want win/loss statements from your main stomping grounds, but it’s impractical to get written statements from all casinos. I suggest that you buy a notebook or keep this information on your smart phone. If my iPhone is either lost or stolen I’ll be in trouble, even though I try to back everything on my home computer. Form 5754: Sometimes gamblers are sharing either lottery tickets or jackpot winnings. If there are two or more in on the pool then nobody wants to be stuck paying

U.S. Citizens and Resident Aliens: There’s both good and bad news for gamblers who reside in the United States - Although the withholding rate is only 28% that’s neither a maximum nor a minimum. If you keep good records you can subtract your losses from your winnings and only owe taxes on the difference. Also the laws may change from year-to-year, but if you’re a really big winner, say the lottery, then you could end up owing a lot more than 28% or 30%. Here’s an example for a typical casino player. Let’s say you have a number of W-2G’s and they along with your other winnings total $250,000. You also have losses of $235,000 throughout the year. The difference is $15,000 that you won and that’s what you must pay taxes on. On the other hand if you won $235,000 and lost $250,000 you just write the amount won and claim only the $235,000 in losses, even though you lost more. The IRS isn’t too sympathetic and they don’t care about how much you lost overall. Sadly, you can’t do any form of multi-year averaging when it comes to taxes. Remember this is the IRS and they want your money so if you over pay all is well; however, it’s a major problem if you somehow pay less than is owed. Non-Resident Aliens: If you’re a foreign citizen residing outside of the United States both the tax rate and thus the withholding rate are 30%. The IRS already knows that you’re unlikely to file a special US tax return so they make sure they get their money up front. So if you win $25,000 on video poker or a slot, the casino will deduct $7,500 from your jackpot and pay you $17,500. Be aware that you’ll probably be taxed by your own government as well. Because this is like a double whammy for gamblers some countries have signed treaties with the U.S. protecting them from paying twice. It’s important that you determine if your country has an agreement and what it says before you start playing. Linda Boyd ,a long-time table game player before turning to video poker, also writes for “Southern Gaming” and “Midwest Gaming and Travel” her book, “The Video Poker Edge”, includes free removable pay schedules and free strategy cards for the most popular games. Look for her story in the current editions of “American Casino Guide” (ACG) and her YouTube videos, also with ACG. Second Edition of her book is available in both paperback and kindle. Available at amazon.com, bookstores, Square One Publishers. www. squareonepublishers.com or 1-877-900BOOK

Bristol Motor Speedway for the Food City 500. Expect paint to be exchanged on the .533-mile oval, on which Kasey Kahne took advantage of a Brad Keselowski gaffe on a late-race restart in last year’s contest to capture his 15th Sprint Cup victory. He’ll be challenged by a field including Keselowski, Kyle Busch, Carl Edwards and Jimmie Johnson.

NCAA Basketball Championship Selection Show 3 p.m. on % KPHO It’s mid-March — do you know where your favorite teams are? The 68 schools picked to compete in the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament are revealed tonight in this special. With the revelation of the brackets comes the requisite debate about which bubble teams were snubbed by the selection committee, which teams didn’t deserve a ticket to the dance and which No. 1 seed is the likeliest to fall victim to an underdog.

Monday MLB Preseason Baseball Wednesday NBA Basketball

4 p.m. on A ESPN A peach of an ESPN NBA doubleheader gets under way tonight in Miami, where Dwyane Wade and the Heat face a team that could give them some trouble in the Eastern Conference playoffs in Kevin Garnett and the Brooklyn Nets. Then it’s a clash of West titans in the nightcap, as LaMarcus Aldridge and the Portland Trail Blazers invade the home court of Tim Duncan and the San Antonio Spurs.

10 a.m. on A ESPN Spring has sprung down in Florida with the first of seven ESPN telecasts of preseason baseball coming from Fort Myers, where Dustin Pedroia and the defending champion Boston Red Sox welcome in Matt Holliday and the St. Louis Cardinals in a rematch of last fall’s World Series. Expect to see more of these teams over the next two weeks — the Sox play twice more on ESPN; the Cards once — before the regular season opens on March 30.

Thursday PGA Tour Golf

12 p.m. on L GOLF; 3:30 p.m. on L GOLF; 6:30 p.m. on L GOLF The PGA Tour’s Florida swing takes it to the Gulf Coast for the next four days for the Valspar Championship. A field including Lucas Glover, Padraig Harrington, Matt Kuchar, Brandt Snedeker and Justin Leonard will tee it up on the Copperhead Course at Innisbrook Resort and Golf Club in Palm Harbor, Fla., a 7,340-yard layout that demands length. Kevin Streelman won this event in 2013.

For all the money the New York Yankees spent plugging various holes, there remains a glaring one that could negate all the good work they did this winter. Remember the old “Who’s on first? What’s on second?” Abbott & Costello routine? That could play out in the Bombers’ infield this season. Take a look around – the question marks are everywhere: Third baseman Alex Rodriguez is gone, sitting out the season because of a PED suspension, with a cast of unknowns in the wings; shortstop Derek Jeter, who will turn 40 in June and retire in October, is coming off an injury-plagued 2013; second baseman Brian Roberts hasn’t played a full, productive season since ’09; and first baseman Mark Teixeira was in decline even before a wrist injury

limited him to just 15 games in ’13. Yet if right, Teixeira could be the key to the New York offense. Prior to the health woes that began in 2012, the 33-year-old Maryland native was among the game’s most productive middle-of-the-order hitters, averaging 35 home runs, 113 RBIs, and batting and on-base averages of .281 and .373. He also led the league in homers and RBIs in ’09, the year of the last Bomber championship, and won five Golden Glove awards. Though he’s taking it slow this spring, Teixeira says he’ll be ready for Opening Day and is counting on playing at least 150 games – which the Yankees will need from him if they’re to keep pace in the ultracompetitive American League East. Teixeira and the Yankees face the Boston Red Sox in a preseason game airing Tuesday, March 18, on ESPN.

Baby Luigi has gone missing, and it’s up to Baby Mario and an army of colorful Yoshis to save the day. In this latest Mario adventure, series gameplay elements remain, such as ground pounds and egg throwing and have been joined by such new additions as gyroscopic controls to increase aiming and Mega Egg throws that can be used to destroy objects, retrieve coins and discover secret doors. Throughout the game, the art style changes as well, with backgrounds and objects being rendered in watercolors, crayons and oil. Despite gameplay that changes ever so slightly from sequel to sequel, and shallow stories of kidnap and rescue, the Mario titles always perform well thanks to an army of loyal fans. “Yoshi’s New Island” keeps that trend alive but offers a few upgrades that will keep the Mario mob entertained until the next adventure hits the shelves.

The High-End Beer Division of Crescent Crown”

ST. PATRICK’S DAY BEER But you say you still want a stout for St. Patrick’s Day? Okay, we have three in mind for you. First up is Barney Flats Oatmeal Stout from Anderson Valley. Always available in bottles and released in green cans to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, this is the same deep, rich, dark oatmeal stout that Anderson Valley has always made and the bronze medal winner at the 2010 World Beer cup. Named after the Boontling (a unique dialect spoken in the Boonville area) name for Hendy Woods State Park, a deep redwood forest with a tree canopy so thick it can seem like nighttime at high noon, this beer lives up to its namesake. Have it by itself, with dessert or as dessert or have it with your corned beef and cabbage. No matter what it will make your St. Patrick’s Day special.

First, let’s talk Killian’s Irish Red. What’s that you say? Killian’s falls into the same old category? Not so fast because Killian’s has reinvented itself in a big way. You may know that Killian’s is one of the oldest brands in the world with the original recipe dating back to the 1860’s. In 1981 Coors Brewing introduced George Killian’s beer to the United States. It caught on immediately. In the early 1980’s craft brewing was just starting to catch on and people embraced flavors that were different from the pale lagers they had been drinking. However, the recipe was not quite as authentic as it

could have been. The beer was a little sweeter than the 1860 version. The folks at Coors are turning back the dial and releasing a new version of Killian’s that goes to show that everything comes back around again. The recipe update results in a rich roasted, fullbodied, well-balanced lager that maintains the signature ruby red color, but now is much closer to the original beer brewed in Enniscorthy Ireland. “George Lett brewed a beer for his friends, and it’s our friends we have in mind as we reintroduce the new look and taste of George Killian’s Irish Red,” said Katie Cowan, Killian’s brand manager. “This is a more robust, more complex lager, but still balanced and easy to drink with friends. It goes great with a wide variety of popular pub food, like wings, burgers and fish and chips.”

Of course many of you prefer that cascading beauty of a nice nitrogen stout and we have an option for you. Continued On Page 62...

So, St. Patrick’s Day is coming and you are looking for something a little different than the same old beer that everybody else is drinking…maybe something fun and exciting but still with that St. Patrick’s Day feel to it. Have we got some suggestions for you.

Legend has it that St. Patrick drove the snakes out of Ireland, chasing them into the sea after the attacked him during a fast he was undertaking on top of a hill. Modern science suggests that this story is probably not true as there is no evidence that there ever were snakes on Ireland. Regardless, the fine folks at Lakefront, most famous

for New Grist, their award winning Gluten Free beer, release Snake Chaser Stout annually. This velvety stout pours black with a creamy tan head. Toffee and coffee aromas in this hearty ale are perfectly balanced. Lightly hopped, the flavor is full of the roasted malts and finishes with very low sweetness. A very smooth beer, it is the perfect way to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day...whether you’re Irish or not. It pairs well with dark chocolate (as long as it’s not too sweet), as well as many grilled entrees, which complement the roasted flavors of the dark malts.

...Continued from page 60 Left Hand makes their incredible Milk Stout Nitro which pours out of the long black faucet with a richness other beers can only dream of. The dark sweet stout settles in the glass and releases tiny, tight nitrogen bubbles resulting in a creamy head which makes for the perfect drink. Until last year, you had to go to one of the many bars in town that offered this treat on tap, but the folks at Left Hand wanted you to be able to enjoy this at home as well. So, after years of research and hundreds of thousands of dollars spent, they have recently released America’s first bottled nitrogen beer. Instead of relying on a foreign object to release the nitrogen into the beer upon opening, Left Hand has developed a method of leaving the nitrogen gas in suspension to be aroused when the bottle is opened and poured hard straight down the

middle of the glass. The result is the same cascade effect that you get when you drink it on tap. The taste is spectacular either way. On draft or in the bottle, Left Hand Nitro Milk Stout is truly America’s Stout. So there you have it, some alternatives to the same old stuff you always drink on St. Patrick’s Day. They all go great with traditional Irish Food and they all will chase a nice glass of Irish Whiskey. Is there anything else you need for St. Patrick’s Day? How about a ride home?

SOUTHERN RAP PIONEER BUN B (UGK) &KIRKO BANGZ: THE TRILLEST TOUR AT CLUB RED Thursday, March 20th at 8pm Texas rap icon Bun B rolls into Club Red on The Trillest Tour along with fellow Houston native and collaborator Kirko Bangz. Along with his partner Pimp C, Bun B put Southern rap on the map with hits like “Draped Up” featuring Lil’ Keke and “Git It” with Ying Yang Twins. Further success came with their cameo on Jay-Z’s smash, “Big PImpin.’” On this spring tour celebrating the trillest (true + real), Bun B offers tracks from his fourth and

latest release, Trill OG: The Epilogue, which Forbes compliments: “There’s a bit of something for everyone on this one.” And Kirko Bangz, who a few critics have compared to Canadian rap star Drake, will preview songs from his major-label debut, Bigger Than Me, scheduled for release in summer 2014.
