Traditional Drag Racing Returns to Tucson with 2 Days of Nitro Jam!

The International Hot Rod Association’s racing season kicks off in Tucson with the IHRA Nitro Jam Southwestern Nationals presented by Good Vibrations Motorsports and hosted by Southwestern International Raceway (SWIR) on March 21 and 22, 2014. This will mark the first time Nitro Jam has visited the area with a traditional racing format, giving race fans something they have never seen before from the IHRA. The 2-day event will feature a thrilling mix of racing classes not seen anywhere else in drag racing. From the excitement of world-class, 260+ mph Nitro Funny Cars, to the insane competitors of Nitro Harleys, Nitro Altereds and Jet Dragsters, and the much-anticipated return of Mountain Motor Pro Stocks, the 2014 Nitro Jam Drag Racing Series line-up promises to be the most exciting season of IHRA action in years. While 2014 is all about the return of competition and tradition to Nitro Jam, one element that veteran fans have grown accustomed to will also be returning to the dragstrip this season, although in a bit of a different form: jet dragsters. The pop, flash and fire that accompanies these 300-mile-per-hour rocket rides will return to SWIR, as the IHRA partners with Daytona-based jet car team Larsen Motorsports for all 12

IHRA Nitro Jam Drag Racing Series events. While jet dragsters typically represent a little competition and certainly some eye candy for the fans, the Larsen Jet Team brings a different brand of jet dragster racing, one that fits in nicely with the all-new Nitro Jam series. Propelling the Larsen jet team are four talented women with varying backgrounds. From a young lady balancing life on the road and her schooling to a veteran drag racer with dozens of years of experience, the Larsen team features a unique collection of talented drivers, all women, and all with a desire to usher jet dragster racing into a new era. “Among our goals is to bring new people to the sport of drag racing. I believe there is a huge opportunity for us to introduce a new generation of racers and fans, which is so important if we want to see drag racing continue to develop and bring new life blood to the sport,” noted Chris Larsen, owner of the Larsen Motorsports Jet Racing Team. In 2014, IHRA Nitro Jam Drag Racing Series fans will get a unique opportunity to follow the paths of these warriors of the quarter-mile as the Larsen Jet Team and drivers Elaine

Larsen, Marisha Falk, Dawn Perdue and Kat Moller compete at all 12 events in real, head-to-head competition with the IHRA’s very first jet dragster world championship on the line at the end of the season. IHRA is also thrilled to announce that leading automotive network MAV TV will be filming Nitro Jam at SWIR, and at all of its nationwide Nitro Jam events, as part of a reality television series that will air later in 2014 with 13 episodes. Gates open at 2 pm on Friday, March 21 and at noon on Saturday, March 22 at SWIR. On Friday, Open Test & Tune starts at 5 pm while the Nitro Jam show begins at 7:30 pm. AZ STATE PARKS

32nd annual celebration of Arizona Archaeology and Heritage Awareness Month

For the entire month of March 2014, the State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO)/Arizona State Parks (ASP) is coordinating events throughout the state for the 32nd annual celebration of Arizona Archaeology and Heritage Awareness Month (AAHAM). View the full schedule at AZStateParks.com/ archy. These events will focus on current efforts to preserve our past by protecting our fragile and nonrenewable cultural resources. AAHAM combines education with entertainment to reach both adults and children in an effort to teach responsible stewardship of our cultural resources. Museums, historical societies, tribes, agencies, parks, and archaeology organizations will be hosting events across the state; events are also planned in Arizona State Parks as part of their interpretive programs. Proclaimed by the Governor each year, this celebration will feature prehistoric and historic site tours, exhibits, hikes, open houses, lectures, demonstrations and other activities throughout Arizona. The featured event for the month is the ARIZONA ARCHAEOLOGY EXPO (Expo). This year’s Expo will offer many educational attractions for archaeology and history buffs, and will be located at Catalina State Park on Saturday, March 29, 2014, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Expo is FREE and open to the public

The Expo will provide a special opportunity for visitors to learn more about why it is important to preserve archaeological sites and historic places, what archaeologists, historians, and tribal members do in their jobs, and about the prehistory and history of Arizona. The Expo will feature archaeology-related hands-on activities, craft demonstrations, and other fun and educational events. In addition, Boy Scout and Girl Scout merit badge requirements can be fulfilled at the Expo! Special displays and booths by archaeological and historical organizations, museums, Native American tribes, state and federal agencies, and others will allow you to participate as an archaeologist might in their research today, or make crafts and tools that teach how prehistoric Native Americans and other early inhabitants survived in the Southwest. Cultural and historical demonstrators, talks by archaeologists, and interactive activities will help make the past come alive! In addition, tours of local archaeological sites (rock art and pueblos) will be offered.. The Expo will give visitors new insights into Arizona’s many prehistoric, historic, and contemporary cultures, and will help instill a sense of stewardship for our state’s fragile and nonrenewable heritage resources.

Signal Hill Petroglyphs – Saguaro National Park I went out to Saguaro West in search of some prolific, ancient petroglyphs that I have heard about from many hiking enthusiasts. Signal Hill Picnic area is a short hike that is perfect for toddlers and small kids or anyone on a short time budget. After about a mile hike up the wash you hit a huge rock outcropping and you will find the ancient Hohokam pictures all around you on the tall basalt rock faces. These symbols are supposed to have been etched in sometime between 300 -1500 C.E. (there are other petroglyph

a little rock climbing is involved but not necessary to take in the majestic Native American artifacts. The majority of these interesting artifacts are authentic but be advised that some vandalism has happened over the years, and please do not contribute to the defacing of the rocks (believe it or not, no one wants to see your initials carved into the stone, plus it is considered a felony). If you are looking for more of a challenge and a workout, this hike can take you to the Cactus Wren trail where you can continue

If you haven’t been out to the Tucson Mountains yet, go for it now because Saguaro National Park is best to hike and bike in the spring, fall and winter. To get there, take Speedway Blvd. west until in turns into Gates Pass and follow this narrow winding road through the mountains until you get to the sign for the desert museum and take a right, you will find the parking area off to your right hand side and it’s marked with A K24. ABOUT THE FILM

With a master’s degree in counseling and education, Randy grounds his opinions in a unique combination of both a movie’s surface entertainment value and its ability to affect him on an even deeper level. ‘Tim’s Vermeer’ Inventor Tim Jenison seeks to understand the painting techniques used by Dutch Master Johannes Vermeer. (PG-13 – 80 minutes)

‘The Art of the Steal’

‘Need for Speed’

Kurt Russell plays a third-rate motorcycle daredevil and part-time art thief who teams up with his snaky brother (Matt Dillon) to steal one of the most valuable books in the world. (R - 90 minutes)

Aaron Paul plays a street racer who, fresh from prison when framed by a wealthy business associate (Dominic Cooper), joins a cross country race with revenge in mind. His expartner, learning of the plan, places a massive bounty on his head as the race begins. (PG-13 - 130 minutes)

Joseph: For a heist movie that includes so many accomplished actors, one would have liked “The Art of the Steal” to have been a lot better. Granted, you cannot say that any talent is wasted here as its stars are each given sufficiently fun material to play with but it comes across as one giant, annoying argument, with the characters constantly bickering back and forth about trust. It’s weakest link, though, is its central scheme, which is way too twisted to follow and therefore more burdensome than entertaining.

Joseph: So long as you strap in for the ride and resolve to remain unbothered by its entire setup’s ludicrous logic, “Need for Speed” is a thoroughly thrilling experience. The only things revving hotter than the motors in this new actioner are the emotions. Having said that, the whole thing leaves a bad taste in your mouth as it ignores intelligent solutions in favor of ones that cause much more destruction. Then again, destruction is always more entertaining to watch than the alternative.

Stan: The documentary, as we follow Tim Jenison’s quest to learn and duplicate the technique that is uniquely Johannes Vermeer’s, we are treated to the various prominent artists works as well as an education on styles, scientific, natural, and artificial influences. With only the appreciation of finished works of art, it’s quite refreshing to learn of the intricacies of planning, colors and paint choices, and the effect of the types of light on the art form. Randy: One would think watching someone create a painting for a good part of 80 minutes would translate into the equivalent of literally watching paint dry, but Penn & Teller have managed to create an engaging documentary despite what could have been a very dry subject matter. One must admire the ambition of the inventor featured, devoting several months to the process. While the end result may not be the revelation of the century, it is an enjoyable way to spend an hour and a half.

AZ Weekly Is Now Available At ALL Circle K Locations Every Wednesday! March 12th, 2014 - March 18th, 2014

AZWeeklyMagazine.com

The following quotes were pulled from interviews conducted by AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s film columnists with talent speaking on behalf of movies recently released in theaters.

Filmmaker Ben Altarescu and Social Media Reporter Zack Samberg (‘The Book of Lone Peak’) By Joseph J. Airdo

“The Book of Lone Peak,” which is now available on iTunes, tells the story of a predominantly Mormon high school basketball team from Utah and their road to the National Championship. “Zack and I met through a family friend who had heard about the story that Zack had come upon and discovered and, luckily for me, threw my name in the circle as a filmmaker who could help. We met in April of last year and a few days later we were out in Utah shooting the film. “I think that one of the most challenging things about the documentary for me was finding a dramatic narrative in a story about a

team that politely beats almost every team they play by an average of 30 points per game. So, I found the real heart of the story - these kids, their beliefs, their David versus Goliath story about how every time they walk into a gym they are discounted and the way that their faith bonded them together and sort of inspired them to continue to work hard and eventually led to this result.” - Ben Altarescu “This was my first experience with a film so it was great to have Ben on board with me. I have always had an interest in film but, at the age of 14 last year, I never really thought that something like this could actually happen. But it was great that the story came to me and, once I heard

it, I thought that it was a big enough that it could not just be an article that I wrote. It had to be something bigger and I thought that a documentary would be great.

SOUNDBITE SPOTLIGHT

“When I first saw these guys in Springfield, Mass., I was shocked. They beat the team they were playing - which was a very well respected team - by 40 [points]. I went to talk to them afterward and asked, ‘How are you guys so good?’ They said, ‘We have all been playing together since second grade. Using the bond that we built together both on and off the court just helps us win games. That is how we are so good.’” - Zack Samberg

Anyone who has ever cooked for a dinner party knows the essential ingredient is planning. Imagine cooking dinner for 5,000 and the planning that requires. Mackie Gmitter, executive chef at the Austin, Texas, barbecue eatery The Salt Lick, is gearing up to cook for attendees at Woodies, a music festival that’s part of the city’s South by Southwest fest. The awards ceremony from that festival, the 2014 mtvU Woodie Awards, airs Sunday, March 16, on MTV and mtvU. A few weeks before acts took the stage, Gmitter’s menu was set. “It is a bit of a challenge cooking for this amount of people for the Woodie Awards,” he says. “We need to be a lot more prepared. The first chef I worked for always told me, ‘If you are not two days ahead, you are one day behind.’ ” Gmitter and his team begin preparations by making sauces and seasoning meat. This is the third time he’s cooking for the Woodies. He’s making chopped brisket sliders, smoked turkey sliders, pork ribs, coleslaw and Hatch green chili mac and cheese. He is also planning “sloppy nachos,” and considering regular ones are not the neatest food, these must be something special, with smoked Gouda and a few other cheeses and chopped beef. His crew makes corn and flour tortillas on site, which gives them, Gmitter says, “that unique flavor. Nothing store bought. You can taste the difference in the first bite.”

I really only came on board because Naomi (Campbell) asked me to. I love working in fashion, and started in films the past year. I have known Naomi for years, and I was a huge fan of the first season. I thought it was a very realistic take on the fashion industry and genuinely trying to help people – not to say there are other shows that don’t. I thought this was about truly helping women in the fashion industry.

How have you stepped outside your comfort zone?

Working in fashion, I constantly have to challenge myself whether acquiring a new skill like riding a horse or motorcycle or learning a new exercise to strike new poses. I always want to do something special – even if is just for you or for the camera.

As an actor, I go to the written word first, because those are the words I’ve got to speak. Then, as a producer, I go through the written word, because those are the words you tell a story with. It’s aligning myself with great creative (talent) and great people and telling stories that you’re passionate about. For me, personally, it’s stories that I would watch.

It has nothing to do with that at all. In terms of attracting talent, After nearly 20 years of doing this myself, I’ve made a lot of friends I can reach out to. I’ve given them my own vote of confidence about the work. Then you scrap it all, and you say, “Give me two minutes of your time,” and you show a teaser.

Well, my wife is going to be mad that people are saying it was a “Star Wars” wedding, because it wasn’t a “Star Wars” wedding, per se; it had some “Star Wars” elements. I’m OK with saying it’s a “Star Wars” wedding, but I don’t think she is. It had some “Star Wars” elements. We had some storm troopers out there, well, for the “Star Wars” junkies, technically, we had Clone Troopers at the wedding. I had a “Star Wars” groom’s cake. In the vows, my wife said, “I promise I’ll always be the Padme to your Anakin.”

‘Money talks’ looks at the big bucks of sports handicapping There’s a lot of money in sports betting – both illegal and legal – but for those who want to win big, good advice is worth more than gold. Premiering Wednesday, March 19, on CNBC, “Money Talks” profiles Steve Stevens (real name Darin Notaro), the Las Vegas-based owner of VIP Sports, which handicaps pro and college sports and then sells that information to gamblers. Along with providing information that benefits the customers, the company must also drum up new business, and it has a staff of sales agents working the phones to close deals with new clients. “I’m born and raised in Las Vegas,” says Notaro, “so I’ve been involved in

gambling my entire life. When I was 12 years old, I was making parlays.” Notaro started just out of high school in telemarketing and was very good at it. But when the company ran afoul of the law, Notaro wound up in jail at 19 years old and served 18 months. “When I looked back on what I did,” he says, “I knew that it was wrong, but I realized that I wasn’t really such a bad guy. I just realized I took my sales talent and was selling the wrong product. It’s pretty much all about the product. I didn’t own the company. These people were doing all the ownership, and I just read a script and was good at it.” So Notaro took his telemarketing experience and turned it instead toward selling sports-handicapping ©2013 Jacob Leinenkugel Brewing Co., Chippewa Falls, WI * Beer information. He also places a bet himself from time to time. “Do I bet every day, all day?” he says. “No, I don’t. But yeah, I make big bets. very show about brothers needs a dad, and if the real thing isn’t available, a kindly sergeant major will do in a pinch. On the Fox Friday comedy “Enlisted,” Keith David plays Sgt. Maj. Donald Cody, who served with the late father of soldier brothers Pete, Derrick and Randy Hill (Geoff Stults, Chris Lowell, Parker Young). Cody promised the brothers’ father that he would look after them, so he brought them all to his command, Fort McGee in Florida, to fulfill that pledge. “I love stories about sons and fathers,” says David, taking a break from rehearsing a play in which he stars as famed singer and actor Paul Robeson. “On one level, we don’t have enough mentoring from dads, generally speaking."

‘Da Vinci’s Demons’ Costume designers shop for characters where they imagine the characters would buy clothes. That line of thinking has savvy designers going through the racks at Target for suburban moms and walking through the boutiques at Saks for executives. Logical, but what’s a costume designer to do when the show happens to be set during the Renaissance, and the main character happens to be a pivotal man in history? For Starz’s “Da Vinci’s Demons,” returning for its second season Saturday, March 22, it means creating. Da Vinci (Tom Riley) has a new jacket, since his last one was destroyed in the carnage of last season’s cliffhanger. “He has an effortless style; no great thought goes into what he wears, but because of his remarkable talent and genius, everything he picks has a uniqueness,” costume designer Trisha Biggar says.
