March Is Phoenix Arts Month
Phoenix- Phoenix Arts Month takes place all March and will be filled with major festivals, art exhibitions, music, theater, dance and much more. “Phoenix is becoming a vibrant place with a wide array of diverse cultural offerings,” says Mayor Phil Gordon. “Experiencing the arts creates shared experiences that
help us know who we are as a community, and explores the fabric that makes up Phoenix. This is integral to making Phoenix a spirited, lively city by giving our residents and visitors places to come together in celebration. Festivals are annual markers in time that help people know the community that they are a part of, and help generate a sense of place and community identity.”

SEDONA FILM FESTIVAL A MAGICAL JOURNEY INTO LIFE AND FILM By Nicholas Connell
The Sedona International Film Festival just finished six magical days of films, celebrities, and workshops nestled in the incredible picturesque red rock country of Sedona. And six days was far too short for this extraordinary journey into the heart and soul of today’s finest film makers. First, applause and ovation must go out to Patrick Schweiss and his family of staff and volunteers! Amidst the sold out audiences and non stop action, Patrick and his crew were gracious, kind and the best hosts anyone could ask for. No wonder the world loves to come to Sedona to experience this diamond of a festival!
In the Documentary Feature department, “The Suicidal Tourist”, by Academy award winning Director John Zaritsky, was the audience choice for Most Compelling and Thought Provoking. And indeed it was. This riveting, emotional and up close look at two families considering assisted suicide death through the Zurich-based organization, Dignitas, is profound. John’s work in this film should be a focal point for further discussions and consideration for the way we view and treat terminal and aging populations. Look for this film to be in theatres soon.
contemporary Jordan. This story of dreams, friendship, forgiveness and sacrifice is an inspiration for all young filmmakers and story tellers to see. Now, if we could only press pause and savor the joy and beauty of the Sedona Film festival for just a while longer…For full details and wrap up from the festival go to www. SedonaFilmFestival.com
Notable among this tremendous lineup were some gems that audiences loved and cheered. “Gone Fishing”, a touching film from director Chris Jones, won the Audience Choice for Best Short Film and Directors Choice for Best Short Film. This fishing story opens us to the bond between a boy and an old man who deal with bereavement through their shared love of fishing, and Goliath, the greatest catch ever made at the local fishing hole. This fisherman was hooked on the great vision director

Do you believe in UFO’s? March 13th will be the 13-year anniversary of the strange and unusual lights seen above the State of Arizona. After an experience while working for NBC-TV News in Chicago in the early 70’s, I realized that there is a distinct possibility we are not alone! A special screening of the award winning Phoenix Lights documentary will be held Sunday, March 15th at the Harkins 14 theatres (Scottsdale Rd & Shea Blvd) with showings at 1pm, 4pm, and 7pm. Here are some key facts: - The first views of the lights were seen moving over the state of Arizona on March 13th, 1997. - The lights were witnessed in at least five other cities. - The first sightings were initially spotted over Superstition Mountains, east of the city, at about 7:30pm. - Witness reports indicated an object with six points of light, immediately followed by eight connected lights, with a separate ninth, which moved in unison with the eight. - The formation was seen again March 12th - March 18th, 2009
Race to Witch Mountain: Same Cute Aliens, Same Story, Different Generation
In this re-interpretation of the Disney classic Escape to Witch Mountain (1975), the theme of the classic stays intact. For years, stories have circulated about a secret place in the middle of the Nevada desert, known for unexplained phenomena and strange sightings. It’s called Witch Mountain. In Race to Witch Mountain (also a Disney production), a UFO expert coerces the help of a Las Vegas cab driver (Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson) to protect two siblings with paranormal powers from an organization that wants to use the kids for their own ominous plans. Here’s some inside info: Ike Eisenmann, the actor who starred in the original as one of the siblings, returns in this version as the sheriff! AZWeeklyMagazine.com
Wes Craven and Sean Cunningham are considered the ‘Masters of Horror’. The first version of The Last House on the Left (1972) launched Craven’s directing career and influenced decades of horror films that would follow. The basic premise of the story remains intact. It’s a character study that explores how far two ordinary people will go to seek vengeance on the disturbed folks who harmed their child. Mari (Sara Paxton) arrives at the Collingwood lake house, and then are kidnapped by a prison escapee and his crew. Terrified and left for dead, Mari’s only hope is to make it back to her parents, John and Emma (Tony Goldwyn and Monica Potter). As the story progresses, her attackers unknowingly seek shelter at the one place she could be safe. When her family learns the horrifying story, they will make three strangers curse the day they came to The Last House on the Left .
It’s not everyday that a boring, average film critic gets to meet a “Playmate of the Year,” so I jumped at the chance. Sara Jean Underwood costars in Miss March, but has appeared in Playboy numerous times. Her first appearance was in October of 2005, again in July 2006, then in 2007 she was named “Playmate of the Year.” Playboy later ranked her as one of the “25 Hottest Playboy Celebrities.” Randy Mongomery: Were you nervous appearing in a feature film? Sara Jean Underwood: We only had one day of shooting. I felt a lot of pressure to get it right and do well. RM: Do you get recognized often? SJU: People recognize me, and it catches me off guard. I get embarrassed, although I am not embarrassed by what I have done. I get beet red when people recognize me. You never know if they are judging you or not. How did all this notoriety come about, and do you plan to continue? SJU: Playboy was on campus (in Oregon) looking for girls of the Pac 10. I auditioned on a total whim. I went to school for four years and then I got “Playmate” and moved to LA. I was a few classes behind. I just kept saying as soon as my “Playmate” year was over, I would move back and get my degree. I didn’t want to leave L.A., but I felt if I didn’t leave I never would do it (finish college). It was important to me; I had put in all that time. I live back in Oregon now, so I don’t know how much I can pursue it.

The joys of becoming a man: your voice changes, hair starts to appear in crazy places, and you see your first dirty magazine. The last occurs to some earlier than others. Eugene and Tucker find their first Playboy at an early age in the new comedy, Miss March. These childhood friends had quite a different reaction to the pull-out centerfold. Eugene (Zach Cregger) is partially turned off by what he sees, and continues on to his teen years as a goody-goody who preaches abstinence. Best buddy Tucker (Trevor Moore), infatuated by what he sees, becomes a “horn-dog”, and scores with every woman he sees. Fast forward to Prom Night, where Eugene and his girlfriend agree to break their vow of abstinence. Nervous, Eugene fumbles about the house, winds up drunk, and falls down a set of stairs. A shiny, metal object lands on his head and knocks him out cold, landing him in a coma. Four years later, Eugene wakes up and Tucker is still by his side. His girlfriend is long gone, busy being featured as “Miss March” in Playboy Magazine. Comedy and pandemonium ensue as the
fans, there are scenes from inside the mansion, an actual Playmate (Sara Jean Underwood), and a cameo by Hugh Heffner himself. Writers/Directors and stars Zach Cregger and Trevor Moore sat down to discuss their new film. Despite being their first big-screen adventure, you may recognize them from TV’s The Whitest Kids You Know. The sketch comedy show is now in its third season and can be seen on IFC.
Trevor: But he (Zach) didn’t get woken up by being hit by a bat; the whole Candace plot line wasn’t there, the “Horsed*ck.mpeg,” the lesbians, the firemen. We had a guy pulling levers that made thought, ‘Why don’t we flip that and the room shoot to the right, and she make them the bad guys; you aren’t had ropes attached to her and stunt going to see that in a movie right guys yanking her, making sure she now.’ didn’t hit her head on the window on the way out. Zach: At first we started out without Playboy and cast someone else as RM: Are you happy with how your Heff. Randy Montgomery: How did you become involved in the project? Trevor: Fox came to us with the script. They wanted us to do it, but we weren’t crazy about it; a road trip sex comedy? We thought that we could rewrite it and adapt it to our sensibility, more along the lines of the TV show. The goal was to make a road trip movie that we would like, for fans of the show. RM: How much input did you have on rewriting the script? Zach: There’s nothing left from the script. The only thing that was in there, was that that there was a coma, I wake up, there was a girlfriend, and Playboy.

Digital Dave Won’t Do Your Taxes, But He Can Help! TaxACT 2008 Deluxe Edition ($12.95 Federal; $13.95 State; $19.95 Both)
Taxes are never fun, but we will help guide you to purchase the right software for your needs and make the process as easy as possible. Some good news this year is the IRS has made a deal with the Free File Alliance LLC to provide free online versions of some of the best software packages. If you meet the criteria outlined at IRS.gov, basically if you’re adjusted gross income is $56K or less, you can prepare and file your taxes online at no charge. If you want the extra features or don’t qualify for the free online versions, there are a lot of options out there, but I will narrow them down for you and show you the best three.
This is the budget conscious tax prep software selection. TaxACT lacks all the bells and whistles of TurboTax and TaxCut, but is much cheaper as well. They have added charitable contribution tables and a new import function this year that will help the average filer. If your Tax situation is fairly simple, TaxACT is simple and easy to understand and is an inexpensive choice to get it done.
Taxes are due on April 15th - like you all didn’t know that. Happy Digital filing!
TurboTax 2008 ($89.95 Premier; $59.95 Deluxe)
The king of tax prep software is still number one. Intuit has been tuning their tax prep software for years and they make it simple to understand and are very thorough on all the tax code. The direct import from Quicken and Quickbooks help to make things easier, too. TurboTax breaks down the complex tax code into manageable chunks and walks you through in questionnaire that any non-CPA can understand. They also add the extra bonus of downloading W-2 or 1099 information directly from supported financial institutions such as ADP, Paychex, and ProBusines. Overall, TurboTax wins my Digital Dave choice award for tax prep software.

Tempting Your Mouth without Testing Your Wallet By Krista Norsworthy
With the economy crumbling, it’s unusual to find a business that is just getting under way in the Valley. The only crumbling you will find at the newly opened Corner Bakery and Café in Peoria, however, are the crumbs coming off your sandwich’s fresh baked bread. The café, which had its official ribbon-cutting debut on March 2nd, marks the first of 15 franchise locations set to open in coming years throughout the Valley.
The eatery provides guests with delicious sandwiches, soups, salads, pasta and baked goods at a price that is economically friendly, with most entrées running under $8. The Chicken Pomodori Panini on sourdough bread with sliced chicken breast, basil, spinach, oven-roasted tomatoes, provolone cheese, and pesto mayo is not overly greasy, which Panini’s tend to be. The crunch of the bread is perfect and the sourdough flavor not overly-tart, and the sandwiches are accompanied by a slightly droopy pickle and flavorfulbut not too salty- “bakery chips”.
You get a lot of food for a low price here. The delectable salads come in their usual green form, but also take the shape of such tempting options as ginger asparagus couscous, Caprese salad (with fresh mozzarella, zucchini, cherry tomatoes, basil, and parsley), and Asian Edamame salad (with cilantro in a ginger citrus dressing), among others. The croutons are homemade and slightly spicy; put some on a bowl of homemade chili and you will barely budge your budget. Save room for desert, or perhaps just go there for the desert because they are all impressive. They have an extensive variety of cookies and cakes that are easily sharable with a friend or easily saved for later. The rugelach displayed slight sweetness of the tartlet-like pastry that wasn’t

too overwhelming, yet still clearly qualified as a desert. If you’re a coffee drinker, they also serve good ‘Joe’ to supplement your desert or meal. Jeep Rubicon
CrackerJax Offers Spring-Breakers High Excitement Without the High Price Tag
Reviews and photos by Chad Haire
In a previous issue, we drove a Jeep Wrangler with the new 4-door body. It was great off-road, but we wanted to get a standard 2-door model with the optional Rubicon package. And here it is. The Rubicon option is for drivers who want maximum performance in the dirt. It includes stiffer suspension, giant tires, front and rear-locking differentials, heavy-duty axles, and some luxury items. The end result is high ground clearance for avoiding big rocks, and super traction so you don’t get stuck. With the shorter 2-door body, tight U-turns are no problem. I took my rig for a three-day trip on some of the most rugged terrain out there; 900 miles in all. Traction in the dirt was so good that I never had to engage the locking differentials. Gas mileage was 13 off-road, and 19 on the highway. The base Wrangler price starts at about $18,000. The Rubicon version begins at $27,220; a fair price for a rig that can keep up with the Hummer and range Rover folks.

when that happens instead of running for the door!
Where and when do you spin? I spin ‘80s dance music every Friday night at the Rogue Bar in Scottsdale. I frequently spin guest spots at all kinds of clubs, from ‘80s to electro, industrial to disco.
Tell us a secret about yourself or your show: I’m a sociologist – literally. I’m working on my doctorate now. To be a good DJ, you have to be able to scientifically read your audience. But that’s really no secret, just the trick of the trade: you have to come prepared to adapt to your audience; no preplanned routines will work. You have to be ready to take your music in the direction that works for the people who are there and ready to keep dancing until closing time.
How did you get started in the industry? A friend of mine, DJVIRGO, convinced me to give it a shot. I have been a musician since I was a kid and have broad taste in music, so it came naturally. What’s the funniest thing that ever happened while performing? Nothing’s better than the power going out when you’re in the middle of the set and people keep singing along to the song – you know you have the crowd hooked
22
What’s the biggest misconception people have about DJs? That it’s fun to stump them with obscure requests. I used to do it myself. Requests are great, because it gives us a chance to see
what people who may not be on the dance floor yet want to hear. But chances are you’re not going to stump most of us! What will people hear when they listen to your music? On Fridays, I hit just about everything ‘80s, from Madonna to The Smiths! You’ll hear everything from disco, funk, and hip-hop to new wave, punk, and goth stuff! Imagine the best ‘80s movie soundtracks, and you’ll probably get a good feel for it – I play the soundtrack of a whole decade! If there were a “Golden Rule” for being a DJ, what would it be? You’re not only playing what you want to hear, or what your audience wants to hear; you have to play what you all want to hear. You have to be feeling it as much as your audience and vice versa.
Your favorite place to play? I’ve played most of the cool spots in town, and the Rogue Bar is the best place. The owners, the venue, the staff, and the crowd are always the best. It’s a fun place to drink, dance, and party! If you could change one thing about the DJ-club scene, what would it be? I don’t know – I just do my thing and have fun with it. That’s all I can do. I’m not out to change the world – or the club scene – just to play some good, fun music to encourage people to drink too much, dance too much, and hopefully not regret it too much the next afternoon when they roll out of bed! What would you be doing if you weren’t DJing? Probably wondering why I own so many records and CDs!

Irish it was March 17th Already By Kevin Lambert
St. Patrick’s Day is a special holiday: -
-
-
What other occasion will see the color of your beer reflect the color of your face the next morning? People of all heritages celebrate the culture of a little green Atlantic island once a year because it features a colorful history full of magical rocks, wee folk bearing gold, hearthealing food, disturbed poets, and most importantly, persistent and unrepentant debauchery (And the accent is pretty cool, too). On this day, global sales of Guinness, Bailey’s, Bushmills, and Jameson spike like
-
estrogen levels when the Jonas Brothers take the stage. St. Patty’s is ground zero for the ‘Boot ‘n rally’- the ageold demonstration of resilient post-puke partying- which exerts its obligatory influence among disciples of revelry for one perfect moment of liversnubbing excess.
And so on. This St. Patrick’s Day, the Valley will see a number of lively, emeraldtinted parties unfold (see pg. 10), from the mega-bangers under expansive parking lot tents to the more exclusive and intimate experiences whose participants will use the occasion as an opportunity to feed on good food and hear pleasing harmonies. Whatever your race, sex, age, background, or party preference, however, just remember this: for your ‘Kiss me, I’m Irish’ t-shirt to be effective, it helps if you’re in the vertical position.
The Night Owl If you have an entertainment event or item to include in “The Night Owl” send to brent.diggins@azweeklymagazine.com “The Night Owl” will cover restaurants, clubs, bars, celebrities, music and other miscellaneous events.
BY BRENT DIGGINS AND EFIA MOORE
Oh my gosh, I have to hurry up and write this so I can get out and enjoy the spectacular Arizona life. The economy is down, stocks are nose-diving, most people don’t even open their 401K anymore, but ya know what? The sun and the weather are free and they are something you can’t buy with all the money in the world, so get out there and enjoy them. This week, read about some St. Patty’s Day events, two local record release parties (including one from a local Valley celeb) and more. St. Patrick’s Day: Ah, St. Patrick’s Day, the holiday celebrating St. Patrick; right? Really, I have no idea who St. Patrick was, but he must’ve been the patron saint of pubs and imbibing. At any rate, we celebrate him on March 17th with lots of drinking and corned beef and cabbage. Here are some of our quick picks for St. Patrick’s Day at our “Irish” pubs: Seamus McCaffery’s: Downtown Phoenix’s Irish Pub of popularity, Seamus’ will have a host of events throughout the day, including their spacious St. Patrick’s Day tents and beer garden. A number of bands will be performing and food and drink specials will abound. This is always a great St. Patrick’s Day experience, and I recommend it. For more information, visit seamusmccaffreys. com. O’Donoghue’s: O’Donoghue’s, a fairly new joint located on the southeast corner of Hayden Road and Thompson Peak Parkway, is hosting an all-day event starting at 8:00am. They’ll kick-off the day with a traditional Irish breakfast of sausages, crispy rashers, black and white pudding, eggs, grilled tomato, traditional Irish chips, and baked beans served with bread and butter. From there (and after noon), there’ll be a $10 cover and lots of food and drink specials, with entertainment including a host of authentic Irish bands and acts. This place pours an “authentic” Guinness pour according to specifications formed in Ireland, and is about as authentic as it comes. For more information, visit www. scottsdaleirishpub.com
Skeptical Chymist: One of my favorite Irish bars, the Chymist always holds one of the biggest parties, and this year is no different. They set up a huge beer garden in their parking lot, and will have authentic Irish music and plenty of specials, promos, and giveaways. For more information, go to skepticalchymist.com. Record Release Parties: Delcoa is one of my favorite local acts. They blend folk, funk, and pop to create unique tracks that get your head bobbing and your chi movin. On March 14th, they’ll be holding their record release at Wrigley Mansion with guests EastonAshe. If you yearn for great local music, this is a mustattend. Tickets are $10 if purchased early and $15 day-of. For more information ,visit myspace.com/delcoa. I plan to have an album review after I pick it up and see them perform it live, so stay tuned. You’ve seen Brad Perry on television in the wee hours of the morning goofing-off and teasing his Good Morning Arizona cast mates Tara, Oliva, and Scott, but now you can see him in a way few other’s have; singing. On March 12th catch Brad’s unique mix of pop, country, and jam band music at his single release party at Martini Ranch. For more info, visit www.mybpmusic.com. Great Arizona Beer Festival Review: With blue skies and a high of about 73 degrees, this year’s Great Arizona Beer Festival, held at Tempe Beach Park, was a dream. Unlike a lot of beer festivals, this one wasn’t only attended by fat guys who home-brew, but college students and Tempe hipsters galore. There were more than 100 brewers at the event, and lines were long; unfortunately too long. While still a great event, I think they need to expand the space a bit and work on logistics, as the tents were too bunched up, leaving lines weaving all over. Spreading things out more (there is room), would kick this fest up a notch. Still a great time and can’t wait for next years. The coolest thing I saw was the Blue Moon booth, where they put up a gigantic blank canvas and lets festival-goers hand-paint a Blue Moon themed work. Be safe, be a good person. Till next time…

DUI? Don’t Get The Max! By Kevin Breger Esq.
Depending on the time of day and the circumstances, you can be pretty sure that anytime a police officer conducts a traffic stop on your car, he or she will also be conducting a DUI investigation. The officer will look for “signs and symptoms of impairment” which include but are not limited to: bloodshot and watery eyes, whether the odor of alcohol is emanating from the car or person, the person’s speech, and the person’s movements. Based on the officer’s observations and the answers provided to the questions, things could go downhill from there. That is why knowing your rights is all important. If you are stopped for a DUI, you should provide a copy of your license, registration, and insurance-if asked-and you may inform the officer: - I hereby invoke my right to remain silent and I refuse to answer any questions (bear in mind you are obligated to provide your name and other identification specifics.) - I refuse to perform any physical or eye tests. - I demand an immediate private phone call to my attorney. - I will submit to your blood or breath alcohol test after a confidential call to my attorney, unless it will unduly delay your investigation (if you ask and the officer does not let you make the call, do not then refuse to further cooperate with regard to the breath or blood test- the fact that you asked the question and the officer refused to allow you to call will have an impact with regard to the admissibility of the results in your case). - I request to preserve a sample of my breath or blood for independent testing. - I demand that I be released for independent tests or other evidence immediately following the completion of your paperwork.
AZ WeeklyMagazine.com
If you are driving and you are under the influence, don’t make the mistake of thinking that “fessing up” to the officer will result in you getting any breaks. It doesn’t work that way! Also remember that you should always be polite and courteous to the officer (even when exercising your rights) – do so even if the officer is being rude. This will stand you in good stead down the road and will help your attorney in working towards a better result in your case. Finally, do not drink and drive. If you do and you get caught, do not forget your rights and remember there are two things you should never scrimp on: medical and legal help. Break ups are difficult under the best of circumstances but airing this dirty laundry virally is just plain rude and hurtful.

Let the Madness Begin
The NCAA Men’s basketball tournament brackets will be announced on March 15th, with the first round tipping off March 19th. The ‘Big Dance’ is a buzzer-beating, esophagus-searing salve for every sports travesty (09’s early answer to A-Rod). For fans, late March is the ultimate annual doggy treat.
Suns Need Push to Make Playoffs
As of this writing, the Phoenix Suns are 4 games out of playoff contention in the Western Conference and have less than 20 games to right the ship. Though Shaquille ‘The Big Shaq-tus’ O’Neal is having his best year statistically since ’05-’06, the Suns are coming off an 0-4 road trip and are 4-6 since Amar’e Stoudemire went out with a torn retina.
Sun Devils Finish Strong
The ASU Sun Devils hoops squad manned up against California last Saturday, winning 83-66 to close out the regular season, and sent senior Jeff Pendergraph (27pts, 10rebs) off with a fitting finale to his distinguished career. ASU ends the season tied for third in the PAC-10, and will take a 22-8 record into the PAC-10 Tournament, where they will face rival Arizona in the March 12th 1st round game. Though ASU superstar James Harden is reticent about his plans following this year’s hoop season, it would surprise this pundit if he was still on campus for the ’09-’10 campaign. Harden is projected by many experts to be a top 5 pick in the NBA Draft. Given this year’s relative lack of mindblowing talent coming out of college, from a personal financial standpoint the timing for his departure couldn’t be more attractive.

According to officials, Barkley was housed separately from other inmates for his safety. A judge reduced his original 10-day sentence pending the completion of an alcohol counseling program.

Irish Humor Into the pub comes Paddy Murphy, looking like he’d just been run over by a train. His arm is in a sling, his nose is broken, his face is cut and bruised. “ What happened to you?” asks Sean, the bartender. “ Jamie O’Conner and me had a fight,” says Paddy. “That little rat, O’Conner,” says Sean, “He couldn’t do that to you, he must have had something in his hand.” “That he did,” says Paddy, “a shovel is what he had, and a terrible lickin’ he gave me with it.” “Well,” says Sean, “you should have defended yourself, didn’t you have something in your hands?” That I did,” said Paddy. “Mrs. O’Conner’s body, and a thing of beauty it was, but useless in a fight.” An Irishman who had a little too much to drink is driving home from the city one night and, of course, his car is weaving violently all over the road. A cop pulls him over. “Well,” says the cop, “it looks like you’ve had quite a few to drink this evening.” “I did all right,” the drunk says with a smile. “Did you know that a few intersections back, your wife fell out of your car?” “Oh, thank heavens,” sighs the drunk. “For a minute there, I thought I’d gone deaf.” Mary Clancy goes up to Father O’Grady after his Sunday morning service, and she’s in tears. He says, “So what’s bothering you, Mary my dear?” She says, “Oh, Father, I’ve got terrible news. My husband passed away last night.” The priest says, “Oh, Mary, that’s terrible. Tell me, Mary, did he have any last requests?” She says, “That he did, Father.” The priest says, “What did he ask, Mary?” She says, “He said, ‘Please Mary, put down that damn gun...” A drunk staggers into a Catholic Church, enters a confessional booth, sits down, but says nothing. The Priest coughs a few times to get his attention but the drunk continues to sit there. Finally, the Priest pounds three times on the wall. The drunk mumbles, “Ain’t no use knockin, there’s no paper on this side either!” www.hoylarious.com

Perhaps Mel Brooks put it best when he said, “Richard Lewis may just be the Franz Kafka of modern day comedy.” With self-indictments and tour names such as “Magical Misery Tour”, and “The Other Great Depression”, “Misery Loves Company”, and “I had a date from Hell!”, you get the idea. This week at the Tempe Improv, you will witness one of the great comedians of our time fill your heart with laughter and joy as he chronicles every misfortunate event in his miserable existence. Comedy Central has recognized Mr. Lewis as one of the top 50 stand-up comedians of all time and he was charted on GQ Magazine’s list of the ‘20th Century’s Most Influential Humorists’. Philadelphia’s City Paper says, “Indeed, he is the Jimi Hendrix of monologists, whose virtuoso free-form riffs on ex-girlfriends, family and other antagonistic denizens from hell are delivered in a mesmerizing, stream-ofconsciousness frenzy, a piss-yourselflaughing assault on the senses. Late night TV viewers and media junkies in general are familiar with his frequent guest appearances. He may hold title to having the most late night appearances, chalking up well over 100 appearances with Dave, Jay, Conan, Jon and Maher. Regarded by his peers as a ‘comic’s comic’, Lewis’ neuroses have become a part of our language as in the now infamous, “I had a date from Hell!” Lewis has taken his lifelong therapy fodder and carved it into a commanding, compelling art form. His early career as a stand-up brought him to the top of his ranks and over time he broadened the scope of opportunities so others could share in his brilliantly warped world. The NY Post recently said; “Richard Lewis built the strongest stand-up comedy career on a blazing trail of neuroses since Woody Allen.”

La Lou Salon 15444 N. Greenway Hayden Loop, Scottsdale (480) 776-5726 lalousalon.com How old were you when you knew you wanted to be in the beauty industry? I was 16. I loved being in the salon environment, and got a job in high school as a receptionist. The atmosphere is so fun, and I saw how much money a salon could make. I didn’t know much about hair, but I got a small business degree, then attended Vidal Sassoon Academy in California. My friends were like, “What if you hate it (doing hair)?” But I love that part of the business; it’s all part of my longterm goal. You present yourself with a refined, unique beauty. We’re curious; what is your heritage? Lebanese, Irish, English, Scottish, and German! A little while ago, gals were gaga over the Posh Spice ‘Bob’. What’s the hot ‘do’ these days and who are examples? People want their hair soft and flowing with layers; sweeping bangs. What is the most popular ‘nonhair’ procedure or product you hope to establish at La Lou? We have a barber for guys and a

nice coffee bar for those who just want to hang out. How do you get guys into La Lou? Men like coming in because we have plasma TVs and sports channels, and they like getting their hair colored and cut, straight razor shave, etc. Because most salons don’t offer barber services or sports, men don’t usually go with their girlfriends or wives. For single guys it’s a good atmosphere, too- it’s full of women! Until you set foot in la Lou, you don’t realize how big it is. What are the specs? About 4100 sq. ft. Yeah, it’s pretty big! That works well for our clients because it allows us to create separate areas allowing for more privacy and intimacy with their stylist. What advice would you give an aspiring salon owner/ businesswoman? Set short term goals to get to long term goals, so it becomes more achievable. If your dreams are going to come true, you have to stay organized. And don’t ever give up. What’s the biggest misconception people have about the beauty industry? That we are uneducated people who are not successful. It’s one of the fastest growing industries out there. Where do you think you’ll be in the next two years? I’ll be here, growing the business. I think about that a

lot, actually. It’s about building a strong group of regulars, and I have been very selective with the staff, so there is a good foundation for growth. What do you recommend we buy if we’re at the grocery store? Well I would never advise someone to shop for hair care products in the grocery store, but if you must, I would go with L’Oréal products at your own risk. Other good products, if they’re available, are Unite, Aquage, and Jack Black.

‘Think Half’ Promotion Makes Solar Power Twice as Affordable Phoenix- SolarCity®, a national leader in solar power system design, financing, installation, monitoring and related services, is offering a promotion that, when combined with government incentives and utility rebates, can allow homeowners to pay a net cost for a solar system installation up to 50% less than the typical full retail price in 2008. SolarCity’s “Think Half” promotion incorporates an introductory discount for sleek, recyclable, thin-film solar modules from First Solar in SolarCity’s service areas in Arizona. The promotion lasts until March 31st, and marks the first time First Solar’s advanced thinfilm technology, known for delivering the lowest manufacturing cost in the industry, is widely available for the residential market. First Solar modules deliver superior performance in variable light and high
temperatures, and achieve the lowest environmental footprint of any photovoltaic technology on a lifecycle basis. Residential customers prize the slender, frameless black modules for their striking, reflective-glass aesthetic. First Solar also provides a comprehensive collection and recycling program for its modules at the end of their useful lives. “Increasing solar’s return-oninvestment, and improving solar system aesthetics are consistently the two greatest priorities for our customers, and this promotion addresses both,” said Lyndon Rive, SolarCity’s CEO. “Solar power systems continue to be among the safest, most predictable investments homeowners can make in the current economic climate.”

Kimmaay’s Out and About Hello, music freaks!
For those needing a good excuse to party outside, check out what’s happening at Tempe Beach Park on Tuesday, March 17th at 5pm. It’s a St. Patrick’s Day celebration with Slightly Stoopid, Bad Religion, and The Used. But get your tickets early – advance tickets are $25-$35, but if you wait until the last minute, they’re $40. Get tickets online at www.luckymanonline.com. I have this thing for tribute bands. Maybe it’s because I can get lost in some great music for a while and take a trip down memory lane. Sometimes getting lost is a good thing. Joe’s Grotto is having a very cool tribute show on Friday, March 13th featuring Second Helping (Lynyrd Skynyrd), Breakdown (Tom Petty) and Children of the Damned (Iron Maiden) who are making a trip up from Tucson. This is going to be an awesome show! Make sure to tell them I sent you. ‘Til next time…

Pet Shop Boys Back in Action
One of the most iconic and influential pop acts in the world, Pet Shop Boys return with their tenth album on April 21st. In a career spanning over 2 decades, the duo of Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe have created some of the most beloved and recognizable hits in the world (“West End Girls”, “It’s a Sin”, “New York City Boy”), and sold over 30 million records. They’ve worked with artists like Dusty Springfield, David Bowie, Liza Minnelli, Robbie Williams, Electronic, The Killers and Madonna. In the USA, Pet Shop Boys are the fourth most successful artist
in the history of the Billboard dance charts (behind Madonna, Donna Summer and Janet Jackson).
Phoenix- Los Angeles-based Oh No Not Stereo will be making a stop in Phoenix’s Trunk Space on Saturday, March 14th at 5pm (1506 N.W. Grand Ave. in Phoenix) in support of their sophomore full-length album 003, which hit stores March 10th. Having recently returned from the UK where they opened for The All-American Rejects, Oh No Not Stereo is hitting the road again soon, with a short run of shows out to SXSW and an East Coast tour to follow. With a total ‘Do It Your Own’ ethic, Oh No Not Stereo
continues to value their independence in this changing industry, and are successfully making waves all on their own! Tickets for this show are $8. For more information visit www. thetrunkspace.com.
Souls of We – Let the Truth Be Known CD Review
By Stephen Wilkinson What does one of the 80’s rock guitar heroes do when he has already done reunions with the two bands he is most known for? Sojourn on with something new seems to be the obvious answer. Here’s ex-Dokken/Lynch Mob guitarist George Lynch with a new outfit dubbed Soul Of We. The music is closer to Lynch Mob than Dokken, certainly in terms of the mojo and overall vibe. However, don’t expect it to sound like either. In terms of sounds shown throughout, it has some experimental merit for Lynch yet the rock roots show throughout. This showcases much more of a songwriting based approach than a guitar shredder basing his songs around him. “January” opens the album with strong yet melodic character while “Skeleton Key” shows a more atmospheric approach. Vocalist London LeGrand, last seen fronting Brides Of Destruction with Tracii Guns & Nikki Sixx, is not what one would define as a “singer’s singer”,
&
but for the overall vibe of this material, it works and is complimentary to the sound Lynch is going for here. Song for song it is superior to the Lynch/Pilson effort Wicked Underground several years ago with ex-Dokken bassist turned vocalist Jeff Pilson. Although this won’t set the world on fire in terms of record sales, it is certainly worth checking out.

Ted Kennedy is battling. Guitarist Jeremy Popoff says that “Allen’s young and healthy, and if anyone has a chance to beat this, it’s him. As sad and scared as we all are, we’re standing by him and staying positive. We’re going to fight this together.” — OC Register Club Red will host a major benefit to raise money for the medical bills of liT Drummer, allen shellenberger, on saturday 4/11. Fans, bands and sponsors wishing to participate, please contact Ron Kennedy at 480-415-8040.
