THE GREAT AMERICAN BARBEQUE & BEER FESTIVAL RETURNS TO DOWNTOWN CHANDLER

Smoked tri-tip, skirt steak, brisket, BBQ chicken, pulled pork sandwiches, ribs, brats, wings, grilled corn, BBQ nachos, BBQ burritos, and all the fixings – the Great American Barbeque & Beer Festival is nothing if not a day for feasting on Arizona’s best finger licking good BBQ. Of course, nothing goes better with this massive assortment of comfort food quite like 200 kegs of cold craft beer from SanTan Brewing Company, who will officially launch their 2014 summer seasonal, Mr. Pineapple Wheat Beer at the festival. In addition to craft beer, patrons will enjoy whiskey from Bulleit Bourbon and Dickel Bourbon to go with their Q. Professionally produced by HDE Agency, the Great American Barbeque & Beer Festival will feature over 60 pit masters from across the nation serving up over 20,000 lbs of mouthwatering BBQ. For a truly adventurous experience, head over to the Raging Cajun Smoking BBQ station and try their bacon wrapped fried alligator – we’re told it tastes just like chicken! Or, try the mother klucker kabob, the bacon stuffed brisket or the loaded BBQ potato at the Montana Bar-BQ Company booth. Representing the downtown Chandler area, Bourbon Jacks Bar and Grill and SanTan Brewing Company will serve their signature mac-n-cheese and

Porkopolis, who is catering the VIP section, will also have a booth for the masses, offering red neck tacos, jalapeno coleslaw, burnt ends and ribs. Local favorite, Joe’s Real BBQ will offer a wide variety of smoked meats and homemade sides. Need a little sweet break from all that BBQ? Enjoy a treat from Pea & Pa’s Kettle Corn, Frost Gelato, Paletas Betty,

Sugarlips Cakery, Kool Twist, Campfire Concessions, State Fair Lemonade, and Rita’s Italian Ice. Wyly Foods will feature deep fried oreos, pickles, cheese, funnel cakes and ribbon fries. “MAD ABOUT YOU” PAUL REISER UP CLOSE AND PERSONAL

AT STAND UP LIVE / March 28th & 29th

Comic/Hypnotist Flip Orley is bringing his outrageously funny one man show to the IMPROV in Tempe, AZ March 27th – 30th. Since Orley bursted onto the comedy scene over 20 years ago he has single-handedly reshaped the image of hypnosis from its vaudeville image, to an act that is hip and edgy enough for the Millennials. This show consistently makes believers out of the most skeptical audience while they wipe the tears of laughter from their eyes. Loyal fans across the county can’t wait to storm the stages, hoping to be among the lucky volunteers to grab a seat and become the stars of the show. Comedy club chains have never had a hypnotist that has replicated the incredible crowds, amazing creativity, or quirky sense of humor that Flip brings to each and every one of his shows.

Stand Up Live in Phoenix presents Paul Reiser March 28th & 29th. Stand-up comedian, actor, and writer Paul Reiser re-emerges on the comedy scene with his quick wit and comedic talent. Comedy patrons across the country are in for a real treat when Reiser hits the stage and unleashes his hilarious insights about the absurdities of modern life. A seasoned actor, writer, producer and stand-up comedian, Paul Reiser continues to add to his list of accomplishments. In addition to cocreating and starring in the critically acclaimed NBC series, “Mad About You,” which garnered him multiple Emmy, Golden Globe, American Comedy Award and Screen Actors Guild nominations for Best Actor in a Comedy Series, Reiser this year starred opposite Matt Damon and Michael Douglas in the Steven Soderbergh-directed HBO movie “Behind The Candelabra,” a film that won eleven primetime Emmy’s. By: Erin Roediger “I have heard multiple times not to chew on ice, but I am not sure what the big issue is about. So what is the real reason behind everyone thinking chewing on ice is so bad?”-Cruch-AHolic “Chewing on ice is not a good idea because the pressure caused by chewing on hard things like ice can cause small micro fractures to occur in the enamel of our teeth. And some people may even find it highly annoying. Now, I understand that sometimes chewing on ice can be addicting and feel good. A few reasons this happens is the cooling effect of the ice, giving you a numb sensation, which to some feels nice. Others enjoy the brief moments of pain caused by the pressure dispersed into the ligament

that holds the tooth in the socket. So while it may feel good in the moment, you can cause permanent damage. The micro fractures I mentioned, over time, can take in bacteria and lead to decay. Sometimes the micro cracks will expand and break portions of the crown off the tooth. On more rare occasions, cracks will develop and expand on to the root of the tooth; this type of crack is often noticed because it becomes painful when chewing. All of the damage must be fixed by a trip to the dentist for a filling, crown, or worse case scenario an implant. My best advice: no chew for you. For more information on better oral health or how to repair damage from chewing on ice, please visit our website www.ismiledentists.com” - Ryan McAffee, D.D.S

Stealth games have been around for quite some time, but in 1998 they received a boost in popularity thanks to such games as Konami’s “Metal Gear Solid” and the first-person shooter “Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six,” which focused on the quiet kill rather than all-out war. Eidos Interactive joined the fun with “Thief: The Dark Project,” a first-person action game that placed you in the sneaky shoes of Garrett, a street-wise orphan. The game’s success spawned two sequels, one in 2000 and another in 2004, and now, following a 10-year hiatus, Eidos Montreal and Square Enix are ready to bring the adventures of Garrett to life again with the current- and nextgeneration title “Thief.” Hidden deep within the shadows of the City, Garrett the master thief stands alone, with only his well-trained skills and arsenal of gadgets and weaponry to keep him company. The Baron and his Watch have gained a tight grasp on the people, keeping them oppressed and fearful in the process. This injustice has resulted in a citizen uprising led by Orion, the voice of the people, and will only end in violence and bloodshed unless Garrett can use his special talents to bring peace to the City and quell the revolution.

‘Almost Human’

‘John Doe: Vigilante’

Josh Ethier plays a man named Mark who disappears from his home in a brilliant flash of blue light while Graham Skipper plays his friend Seth, who is the last person to see him alive. Now a string of grisly, violent murders leads Seth to believe that Mark is back - and that something evil is inside of him. (NR 80 minutes)

Jamie Bamber plays an ordinary man who fights violence the only way that he knows how - by killing one criminal at a time. Is he a hero or a villain? Are his actions justice or vengeance? You decide. (R - 90 minutes)

Joseph: After a somewhat promising start, “Almost Human” plays it more or less by the 80’s body-snatching book - albeit with a bit more gore than we are used to seeing in the genre - and fails to bring anything new or even the least bit funny to the table. The new horror flick may still be worth a watch for some fans who will be happy to indulge in the resulting nostalgia but it ultimately cannot garner a general recommendation on the grounds that it simply is not all that special.

Joseph: “John Doe: Vigilante” is well-intentioned and, in theory, extremely effective in conveying its messages about the inconsistencies in our justice system and what we need to do (band together) in order to remedy the situation. However, as entertainment, it is far less effective, coming across as a dramatized version of a lecture rather than a fullfledged story that engages viewers. The experience lacks emotion and feels somewhat stilted, similar to an arduously dry documentary.

For ‘2001: A Space Odyssey’ (1968) actor Martin Balsam was hired as the voice of the computer HAL but director Stanley Kubrick felt his voice would be too familiar and recast with Douglas Rain’s voice.

The following quotes were pulled from interviews conducted by AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s film columnists with talent speaking on behalf of movies recently released in theaters.

Writer/Director Joe Begos (‘Almost Human’) By Joseph J. Airdo

“I grew up in new England. Essentially, most of New England is exactly like a Stephen King story. It is like these very dense woods with a very small town where everybody knows each other. Growing up, I would always watch ‘Unsolved Mysteries.’ And one of my favorite movies was ‘Fire in the Sky.’ One of the things that frightened me more than anything was alien abduction. “I always had these ideas swirling around in my head about how I would attack an alien abduction movie. And I was also a fan of very brutal 80’s-style slashers. So when it came time to make my first movie, I decided to go

back home and do an ‘Evil Dead,’ badtaste style movie and just make the craziest kitchen-sink alien abduction movie that I could. “When you have 10 minutes of such an intense pace and such an intense build ... there is almost no other reaction that you can have than a funny break. When you have the audience in the palm of your hand, you try to figure out a balance of emotion. I see as many horror movies as I can. I am at the theater three times a week, just taking in the audience’s reaction and seeing what makes them tick.

“I was really thinking about that when I was constructing this screenplay because I wanted it to work best when seen with a group of people. To me, that is when horror movies work the best you - when you have a bunch of people around you and you can all kind of react off of each other. It is kind of like a domino effect. It gets everybody going. So it is important to have those screams and gasps and let the audience laugh a little bit so that you can get them white-knuckle again, gripping their armrests.” - Joe Begos

in addressing the issues is to start talking about them - which isn’t really happening at the moment. In addition, we would like people to consider that if we can become a community again and start looking out for each other - start protecting and caring for each other - then we might actually start to prevent some of these violent crimes.” - Stephen M. Coates “I think the message of ‘John Doe: Vigilante’ is loud and clear; the greater community need to band together as a whole and demand change. If people truly believe the system is failing - that good people are being treated unfairly - then the only way to make a difference is to stand united and make that change.” - Kelly Dolen “It’s quite easy to walk away from ‘John Doe: Vigilante’ fired up and angry about the injustices in the world and the inconsistencies in our justice system. However, our intent with this film was not to start any vigilante activity but rather to stimulate debate, to start a conversation; The first step

Excitement Builds for Off Road Nationals at Wild Horse Pass Motorsports Park March 22-23 The excitement over the start of another season of the best short course off road racing in the world will soon reach fever pitch in Phoenix. That’s what happens when you make a good thing better by condensing the weekend schedule and fine-tuning everything involved in putting on the event as officials of the Lucas Oil Off Road Racing Series presented by GEICO have done. The results will be on display when the series opens its sixth season with the E3 Spark Plugs Arizona Nationals presented by GEICO March 22-23 at Wild Horse Pass Motorsports Park in Chandler, Arizona. “We’ve got the greatest fans in the world and whenever we make a change our goal is to make coming to the races more enjoyable for them,” series director Ritchie Lewis said. “That’s what we think we’ve done by scheduling all of our on-track activity over two days instead of three. The fans are going to be able to watch their favorites go through all the steps leading up the race and that’s going to make it much more interesting for

them. We’re excited about it.” All the series events are threeday affairs and in past seasons the first day often had been a combination of tech inspection, practice and qualifying followed by practice, qualifying and racing the next two days. With the new, improved format in effect at Wild Horse Pass, the race teams will unload their equipment, set up their pit area and take their vehicles through tech inspection on Friday, March 21, but there will be no on-track activity. On Saturday, March 22, spectator gates will open at 8:30 a.m., there will be practice and qualifying for all the pro classes from 8:45 to 11:45 and racing will begin at 12:30 p.m. with the Pro Lite Last Chance Qualifier.

The Pro 2, Pro 4, Pro Lite, Pro Buggy and Modified Kart classes all will race on Saturday, but the Junior Karts will race only on Sunday, March 23, when spectator gates again open at 8:30 a.m. There will be qualifying for all classes from 9 to 11 a.m., racing will begin at 11:30 a.m. with the Junior 2 Karts and the final race of the weekend, for the ground-shaking Pro 4 class, is scheduled for 4 p.m. Last year’s event set the tone for the most competitive championship points battles ever, with eventual champion Carl Renezeder sweeping the Pro 4

events, Marty Hart and Renezeder sharing Pro 2 honors, Brian Deegan and RJ Anderson each winning a Pro Lite race and Bradley Morris and Geoff Cooley winning in Pro Buggy. Tickets all are General Admission and are available on-site only. Tickets are priced at $50 for the weekend or $25 for one day, with children 12-andunder free, but $5 off coupons will be available at most area NAPA Auto Parts stores and Circle K convenience stores. For more information on the track, visit www.RaceWildHorse.com.

Personal favorites from the menu include the Garlic Sautéed White Gulf Prawns and Prime Beef Tenderloin served with Smoked Gouda Potato Purée. Other popular dishes include the Lobster Bisque made with main lobster and dry sack sherry, and the Duck Breast with Crispy Leg Confit. Of course no meal is complete without a little sweet, and so we finished with house-made truffles and tableside Bananas Foster. Too stuffed to sit any longer, we ended our evening in a rare form, dressed to the nines, downstairs at the bar – manning the pool table until the wee hours of the morning. Whether you are planning a date-night out, booking a stay-cation for yourself, or seeking a place to stay for out-oftown guests, at the Scottsdale Resort and Conference Center you’ll be treated like royalty. A few miles from the center of everything, this property is one to keep in your cache. Don’t hit the snooze button so you can eat breakfast at Snooze Eatery By Santino DeFranco Follow me on Twitter @tinodefranco The magical assortment of fun dishes at Snooze Eatery, just east of the Biltmore shopping center on Camelback Rd., looks like a combination of all the best offerings of all the other menus in the area in one place. I mean, when you look at a menu, you expect to see the usual suspects: egg meals, omelets, French toast and, well, you’ve seen them. Most menus, though, have some dish that stands out amongst the other standard fare and it intrigues your taste buds to go out and try something new. Not Snooze. Everything on their menu IS that one dish that stands out.

There’s the Breakfast Pot Pie—filled with homemade rosemary sausage gravy smothering a flaky puff pastry. It comes topped with an egg of your style and has browns. Yes, that sounds good. Dr. Seuss would be more than happy to order the Green Eggs and Hamwich— cage free eggs scrambled with spinach and fresh herbs, filled with Niman Ham and melted gruyere, and served with dijon hollandaise on a fresh ciabatta roll served with hashbrowns. Are you sold yet? No. Oh, you are, but you’d just like to hear more? Got it. If you’re in the need for something sweet to set your day off right, scarf down the OMG! French Toast—fresh brioche stuffed with mascarpone and topped with vanilla creme, salted caramel, agave soaked strawberries and toasted coconut. OMG is right. I could literally just copy and paste their entire menu here for you all to see and you’d me amazed at the diversity of what Snooze has to offer. I feel that might be a bit of cheating, though. But, you may ask: the quality? How is the food? It’s great. When I went, I ate the Late Harvest Benny, which consists of wilted Swiss chard, fennel and leeks served atop goat cheese and herb polenta cakes with poached Niman Ranch eggs, cream cheese hollandaise and toasted pine nut crumb. This was honestly one of the best eggs benedict I’ve consumed, and I’ve eaten a lot. The hollandaise sauce was light and fresh, but the real kicker was the addition of leeks to my breakfast plate, and

the polenta cake. The creativity of the ingredients complement each other so well, you’ll be spinning with excitement. The restaurant itself sits next to Nordstrom Rack, just east of the Biltmore, and usually has a hearty line, but in my experience, it moves quickly. The wait-staff is friendly, and the warm, sunny inside will wake you up quickly. My only complaint about Snooze is the coffee. Normally, I might not go on a diatribe about the coffee at a restaurant, even though coffee is one of the most important components in my daily life. But, I feel so compelled to express my dislike of their coffee for no other reason than their own selfpromoting efforts on the drink. There is a plastic lanyard type of fixture in the middle of every table that has the ridiculously long story about how Snooze’s owner went to Guatemala and found the farm where he gets all of the coffee from for the restaurant. By the time I finished reading the story I was so excited for the coffee I didn’t care about my meal, but when it arrived, my response was: meh. I’ve had better. There was nothing bad about the coffee, but I certainly was expecting a much more jaw-dropping experience considering the hype surrounding the breakfast beverage. If you’d like to check out the full menu go to www.snoozeeatery. com or go to 2045 E. Camelback Rd., Phoenix, AZ 85016 and put your name in for a table. I promise, the wait won’t be too long. The menu is really something to marvel at, just don’t get your hopes up for the coffee.

The intimidation of this seat will cause many players not to sit there or will cause them to play hands incorrectly as to not mess up the cards. If you were sitting at third base and you had the hand of 12 vs the dealer up card of 2, how many of you would hit it even though it is the correct basic strategy play. If you deviate from basic strategy so you don’t get rude comments from the other players, you will cost yourself money. You have to eliminate intimidation from your game. Its tough enough to make money playing blackjack so you have

to play the hands correctly. I personally like to sit at third base and since I am a card counter my strategy is different than basic strategy. For example when my count is negative, I hit 12 vs a dealer up card of 4. It drives the other players crazy and I am often told that I need to learn how to play the game by other players. But these are the same players that can’t understand how I ended up winning while they lost at the end of the day. In fact, I like it when other players get mad and leave the table. I prefer one on one with the dealer because I can get 200 hands in an hour as opposed to only 60 with a full table. Since I have a long term advantage over the Casino it helps me get to the long run expected outcome quicker. Have you ever run across the selfproclaimed blackjack expert at your table? The one who always tells you how you should have played your hand after it’s over. I don’t talk much when I’m playing but not to long ago I doubled Ace -8 vs a dealer up

BLACKJACK CORNER

The seat to the right of the Dealer is called third base. Many players won’t sit there because they believe that player controls the flow of the cards, and a bad play by this player can ruin the game for everyone. While you will remember a bad play that caused you to lose a hand, in the long run it has no effect on your outcome. Stupid players help you just as much as the hurt you, the problem is you only remember the ones that caused you to lose.

card of a 6 and caught a 10, then the dealer caught a 5 to make 21 and beat everyone. When “Mr. Blackjack expert” asked why I did that I simply replied if you don’t know, this game is going to cost you a lot of money. That shut him up because he knew that I knew. So if the correct play is to hit our 12 against the dealers 3, or hit your Ace7 vs the dealer 9, do it. Don’t let any player or seat intimidate you.

The High-End Beer Division of Crescent Crown”

GIRL SCOUT COOKIES

We will start with Trefoils. Trefoils are the most traditional of all Girl Scout cookies. They are a shortbread cookie, which means they are very heavy on butter, but otherwise kind of light. These cookies cry out for something with a little bit of body, but not too much richness, lest you step on the butter. My thought here is a nice barleywine. How about the richness of an Old Stock from North Coast? This beer is like a fine port. It is very high gravity, weighing in at 11.8% ABV and very well hopped, albeit English hops. The English hops leave a subtle hop quality that blends very nicely with the butter in the cookie. Alternatives might be another barleywine like Bridgeport Old Knucklehead. You could also try a brown ale, maybe Big Sky Moose Drool as a nice complement. Do-Si-Dos…the peanut butter sandwich cookie. I’m thinking that hops will go well with the peanut goodness of this cookie. Great bitterness and a nice carbonation level will work wonders with this cookie. Since it is the season, how about some Bell’s Hopslam? Six different hops with a touch of honey makes this a killer combination. You could also consider a very complimentary pairing, something with a little bit of sweetness to pair up with the peanut butter. Kind of a little chocolate and beer sort of thing. Since we do not get the consummate chocolate peanut butter beer in Arizona…that would be Du Claw’s Sweet Baby Jesus, the next best option would be a nice

chocolaty beer…how about Great Divide Chocolate Oak Aged Yeti? Nice chocolate flavor with just a hint of chili pepper on the finish gets the job done. Straight chocolate works well too, try Sonoran White Chocolate with this cookie.

Savannah Smiles are the most recent lemon flavored cookie from the Girl Scouts. This is a tangy, tart, shortbread cookie, so we want to look at a few flavors here. My first choice is a nice German style Hefeweizen… I am thinking Schneider EdelWeisse. The banana and clove in this beer is frequently complemented by a lemon, so why not make it a lemon flavored cookie? I would also look at something done in the Berliner Weisse style. Bell’s Oarsman, or New Belgium’s latest offering, Snapshot, fits the bill. Both provide a hint of tartness at the end which would match up perfectly with the lemon flavor in the cookie. Tagalongs are another peanut butter cookie, but this time in patty form, enrobed in rich chocolate. Certainly the aforementioned Chocolate Oak Aged Yeti would work wonders with this cookie, but let’s reach a little further. Step into this one with Left Hand Milk Stout. Go with either the nitro version or the original to create a nice chocolate complement to this richly flavored cookie. Want a little counterpoint? Try a tart beer like a Flemish Red with this cookie. I am thinking that Petrus Aged Red is perfect, but you could not go wrong with either Duchesse de Bourgogne of Monk’s Café Flemish Red. The nice

lactic tartness will balance out the chocolate and allow the overall flavor of the cookie to shine. If you really want to reach, look at a hoppy Belgian Ale. Something like Piraat to hit this mark.

We are coming down to the last couple. Next up is Samoas. This is an incredible pairing of caramel and toasted coconut, and chocolate with just a little bit of cookie. Samoas sound like a stand-alone cookie, but we have just the right beer here in Arizona for this one. Papago Coconut Joe hits the spot. Starting off with a base beer that is a milk stout infused with Irish Cream flavored coffee bean and then adding in coconut is almost unfair to this cookie. The caramel will keep the cookie in the forefront,

but the beer will play off of the rest of the flavors so nicely, you may not realize if you are eating or drinking. An alternative would be Breckenridge Vanilla Porter. The natural vanilla beans in the blend would go a long way to complementing the caramel in the cookie and the roast would handle the other flavors. Coconut Joe and Vanilla Porter are definitely the on-two punch here.

Last and not least are the classic… Thin Mints. Thin Mints are almost too easy. You need something with a rich, roasted malt flavor…maybe some chocolate sweetness…and a lot of alcohol. You got it…I am describing North Coast Old Rasputin and/or Great Divide Yeti here. If you like Belgian beers, Gulden Draak would also work wonders with this cookie. There you have our suggestions for great pairings with Girl Scout cookies. We try to be full service here. Next week, look for a preview to Arizona Beer Week, including our listing of the top fifteen (or so) events to attend. Until next week…cheers.

We talk all the time in this column about beer and food pairing, but this week let’s do something unique. Beer truly works incredibly well with sweets and other desserts, but this could be the ultimate test. I am certain you all have been hit up by the co-worker with the young daughter in Girl Scouts to buy some cookies. Since it once again release time for Girl Scout Cookies, let’s take a look at some pairing suggestions.
