PLENTY OF REASONS TO STAY ALL DAY

The Arizona BBQ Festival is more than a place to devour tons of smoked meat from over 20 top pit masters, it’s also the largest Honky Tonk in the state. With live country/rock bands all day, fun bar experiences, wrestling shows, and the now-famous “Redneck Games Arena,” there’s plenty of reasons to stay all day. For starters, it only costs $12 to get in. First grab a drink at one of the bars sponsored by local faves like Bourbon Jacks, Dierks Bentley’s Whiskey Row, Coach’s Corner, Stadium Sports Grill, and Uncle Bears. Then head over to the Redneck Games Arena and try your hand at arm wrestling, watermelon seed spitting, or keg rolling … ladies, be sure to strut your stuff in the Daisy Duke Beauty Pageant at 6:00pm. In

between it all, catch a gourmet BBQ cooking class in the professional kitchen, or watch the insanity of a live wrestling show by the International Wrestling Federation. Keeping you fueled, over 20 BBQ vendors will offer anything from $2 samplers to full plates of ribs, brisket, pulled pork, and more. Plus, new this year is a Bacon Zone where 10 restaurants serve up any kind of food with bacon! Vote for your favorite and they’ll win a case of Coors Light!

shaded seating, live DJs from Degree 270, and private bathrooms. Everyone should hit up the website first for fun “come in celebrity redneck costume” ideas! Whether you’re a fan of Duck Dynasty or Honey Boo Boo, have some fun with your attire. If you go all out, there’s a Best Dressed prize awarded at 6:30pm. Cap it all off by singing along with The Crown Kings, one of AZ’s best cover bands, on the main stage just before 7pm.

Overnight, an instant city arises boasting a larger population than most neighboring towns. Country Thunder has partnered with Right Away Disposal, a locally owned and operated (Apache Junction) Waste and Recycling provider, in an effort to not only reduce the amount of waste generated by the festival, but to minimize the event’s footprint on the environment.

As an added bonus, each time a camper checks in a bag of recyclables, their name will be entered in a drawing to win a free campsite for 2015, courtesy of Right Away Disposal.

“Thunder is an incredible thing— experiencing the power of it can be awe-inspiring, yet it only lasts a moment and it never leaves a mark. Country Thunder’s goal is to accomplish these very same things each and every year,” explains April Harbour Swaim, G.M. of the festival.

“Country Thunder IS awe-inspiring, we ARE only here for a short time and we NEVER want to leave a mark. Our partnership with Right Away Disposal can help us achieve this goal better than ever by helping us become truly eco-conscious.”

Billboard Magazine’s “Tejano/Norteño Group of the Decade” Intocable performs live at 8:30 p.m. on Friday, March 28 at the historic Celebrity Theatre. After years of dedication and passion, Intocable has become one of today’s most influential groups in Tejano, and their tough Tejano/Norteño fusion has become the blueprint for dozens of Tex-Mex groups. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Tickets ($35, $55 and $80 in advance/$40, $60 and $85 after March 24) are still available at Celebrity Theatre or online at www. celebritytheatre.com. - I have not seen much quantifiable research that shows natural products having the same effect as mouthwash. A glass of water with a teaspoon of salt can help lower bacteria levels, but won’t leave your mouth feeling as fresh. It can also be abrasive with too much use.

- I would recommend use of mouthwash whenever you brush and floss your teeth. I would also recommend its use during the day if you cannot use a toothbrush and floss after lunchtime. It is a quick way to lower the acid level of the mouth after meals. I would recommend its use (same for brushing and flossing) at least 20 minutes after a meal so that your saliva has time to break down the acid and food debris as well.

- Too much alcohol in a mouthwash can leave your mouth very dry. That can be harmful over time, so I suggest avoid mouthwash with high alcohol levels. Never use a mouthwash that has any type of sweeteners or abrasives.

- Mouthwash use can greatly enhance your oral health in conjunction with brushing and flossing. Mouthwash can create a less acidic environment of the mouth, so that bacteria won’t destroy teeth. Mouthwash can also help wash away loose food and plaque particles and keep your breath fresh.

- Most mouthwash products will be similar, but I like to recommend one that has a small amount of fluoride in it. Fluoride can help soak into enamel and strengthen it against future bacteria attacks.

‘Maladies’

‘Bethlehem’

‘Locker 13’

Tells the story of the complex relationship between an Israeli Secret Service officer and his teenage Palestinian informant who are torn apart by competing loyalties and impossible moral dilemmas. (NR - 99 minutes)

Jason Spisak plays the nighttime janitor in an Old West theme park who delves into the mysteries surrounding an old locker. His sage supervisor recounts chilling tales that underscore the importance of making the right choice - a theme that comes into play when he makes an unsettling discovery and faces a life-or-death decision of his own. (PG-13 - 90 minutes)

Stan: Director/co-writer Yuval Adler presents the dichotomy of a father/son type relationship that’s constantly being challenged as the moral convictions relating to each of the central characters loyalties to their causes becomes that mounting destructive wedge.

Joseph: “Locker 13” likely worked a bit better on the page than it does on the screen. Its stories are certainly interesting and leave you with a lot to think about but their static nature simply does not lend itself to the visual medium.

James Franco plays a talented and successful actor who retires at a young age due to a perceived mental illness. Now living in a small town with his deranged sister (Fallon Goodson) and his best friend (Catherine Keener), we watch as their maladies intertwine. (NR - 97 minutes) Stan: A stark reminder that we each have our own maladies, as humankind, which is the essence that makes us who we are apart from one another. It’s the degree of quirkiness’s that comes into question relative to society’s gauges. Joseph: “Maladies” is more a performance experiment for star James Franco than it is a worthwhile piece of entertainment. There are a couple of amusing aspects but, as a whole, the motion picture is particularly pointless.

‘Shirin in Love’ Nazanin Boniadi plays a young Iranian-American who, despite being engaged for years to a successful Iranian plastic surgeon (Maz Jobrani), finds herself breaking loyalty and tradition when she falls in love with a mysterious young man (Riley Smith). As her secret unravels and cultures clash, she discovers what it ultimately means to be true to herself. (NR - 104 minutes) Joseph: “Shirin in Love” is a fairly formulaic romantic comedy but it is far too likeable to be dismissed that easily. Instead, we relish the opportunity to spend time with its supporting players while watching its two leads fall in love with each other.

The following quotes were pulled from interviews conducted by AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s film columnists with talent speaking on behalf of movies recently released in theaters.

Producer John Waldron (‘Locker 13’) By Joseph J. Airdo

“I am a part of a production company called Brothers Ink. Identical twin brothers Adam and Donovan Montierth from here in the Valley founded it probably 10 years ago. They saw a short comedy film of mine that won a bunch of awards, asked me to join their company and we developed the concept for this feature film - ‘Locker 13.’ They have mastered the short film genre as filmmakers and we wanted to come up with a film that was very similar in tone to the ‘Twilight Zone.’ “There are four standalone vignettes in the film and then there is one story that weaves all the way through it that ties all of those other chapters in. We did what

we had to do to get a hold of [actors]. If you are naïve and do not know any better, you can circumvent the traditional arenas of going through managers and agents whereas if you are in the industry they say you just do not do that. And once we started getting some big attachments on the film, it helped to attract higher caliber acting talent and crew. It was synergy. And I have to honestly say that the ‘Locker 13’ script tells a wonderful story. We found that if actors think that it is a good story, it is well-written and is going to be done in a professional way, they want to work.” – John Waldron

Writer/Director Carter (‘Maladies’) By Stan Robinson

“James (Franco) is a very good actor and delivered exactly what the director wanted, but, he’s also a good friend and we’ve worked on a lot of creative things together so it wasn’t just a director-actor relationship, we’re friends so directing him was fun and easy, the script was the script and he pretty much stuck to it. He acted out the lines, as did Katherine and everyone so it was a wonderfully creative collaboration!

“I’m a visual artist first and foremost, and the theme of the movie is so attached to my own life, being a creative person, the things that you make when you put them out into the world in a gallery, they have legs and then they live on their own. They’re about life and death, and at some point you’re not going to be here and those things will still be here, so the story line is so attached to my own life as an artist.

SOUNDBITE SPOTLIGHT

“[With a chuckle!] Our shooting schedule was a nightmare; we had 10 days of shooting with a blizzard in the middle. It was over the Christmas-New Year holiday period. I like working under pressure and that was ‘pressure times a million’, and to shoot that caliber of film under those conditions was a challenge indeed! “We did a lot, with a few different locations with all of them in New York, with amazing people both cast and crew that were really dedicated and interested in the theme of the film, who wanted to do their best and I thank each and everyone of them, we worked fast and did it well!” – Carter

Actor Marshall Manesh (‘Shirin in Love’) By Joseph J. Airdo

Iranian plastic surgeon. “She falls in love with another guy, played by Riley Smith, and there is a clash of culture of things that shows the other side of Iranians. Whereas the media shows all of this bad stuff, this says, ‘Hey! Iranian people are like normal people! They have the same families! They have their own problems! They fall in love and, believe it or not, they laugh.’ People do not know that Iranian people laugh, too. But they do. They have fun, they party and they have great food.

“Ramin Niami - who is the writer, director and producer of this movie - sent me the script. I read the script and it was totally different from the scripts that I usually get regarding Iranian/Middle Eastern kind of stuff. So I liked this story and immediately said, ‘Yes.’ It is a romantic comedy about an Iranian girl who was born and raised here and is supposed to marry an

“I have to say that I have been really lucky to make it as a working actor make a living by doing this, which is really rare in Hollywood. As they say, ‘Preparation and opportunity create luck.’ It doesn’t matter if you are an actor or a plumber or an engineer you have got to know what you are doing. There are a lot of people who have talent. So you have to get lucky. Like Paul Newman said a long time ago in an interview, ‘Whoever doesn’t mention luck is lying through their teeth.’” – Marshall Manesh

Chevrolet Camaro Super Sport Convertible Text & Photo By Chad Haire If you want to enjoy an open air car with plenty of power under the hood, the Chevy Camaro Super Sport is worth a look. Under the hood is the proven 6.2 liter V-8 engine cranking out a healthy 426 horsepower and hooked to a 6-speed manual gearbox. Gas mileage is rated at 16-24 mpg which is what we got. Zero to sixty can be reached in about 5 seconds. Handling and cornering ability is improved thanks to the upgraded suspension and brakes. While the 6-speed manual gearbox is fun to play with, the optional 6-speed automatic is a better pick. It gets better gas mileage, is easier to live with, and slightly quicker to boot. The interior controls are very simple to operate. The plastic materials used give a cheap appearance, but the money saved allowed for more to be spent on performance parts, so why gripe? Visibility view from side and rear is limited, but that can be solved by putting the top down! Two options are must haves-- the loud sport exhaust for $895 and the attention getting black stripes for$470. Small change compared to the fully loaded tab of $46,360.

The story “Eat Like a Local--Six Indulgent Reasons To Get Out Of The Hotel Early” features six top breakfast spots in the world: Amsterdam’s Pancake Bakery; Vienna’s Orlando di Custello; Copenhagen’s Laura’s Bakery; Istanbul’s Van Kahvalti Evl; Toronto’s Rose & Son’s and Phoenix’s own Carmel’s Breakfast House. Carmel’s Breakfast House is located in a repurposed 1940’s house in Phoenix’s lively Arcadia neighborhood. The breakfast spot is decidedly antislick with vintage and mid-century modern décor, and a relaxed and warm ambiance earning a loyal and growing following. Owner Patrick Flanigan describes the breakfast menu as “Sunday morning breakfast at Grandma’s – straight-up good food served fresh in a place that just feels right.” Locals will tell you to find Carmel’s by looking for the orange vintage VW van that sits outside the eatery and serves as both sign and a hint of its quirkiness. Add a personalized greeting by the owner and a heavy waft of homemade croissants fresh out of the oven and you get the full picture of why Travel + Leisure loved it! Carmel’s has earned its stripes with simple, but not basic baked goods, made fresh daily using quality ingredients. Highlights of the Breakfast Menu include:

Warm Croissant Egg & Bacon Sandwich-baked fresh from the oven

Tartin-a delightful open face poached egg, asparagus, roasted cherry tomato and warm goat cheese

ICE-COLD CRAFT BEER! DELICIOUS FO OD! 24

Carmel’s also takes coffee seriously so patrons can expect the best brew in town. Baristas go through training at Carmel’s so the coffee is always pitch perfect. Those who don’t have time for a leisurely breakfast will still feel at home hanging out at Carmel’s. Regulars prefer to perch at the counter where they can watch the shop’s lively action and its talented Baristas at work. In addition to its famed “joe,” freshsqueezed juices, iced toddies and hot chocolate drinks are served up and Carmel’s warm-from-the-oven baked goods like blueberry muffins, chocolate chip cookies and brown butter scones from a secret family recipe keep stomachs and noses feeling the love. Locally owned and operated by Patrick Flanigan, Carmel’s Breakfast House is located at 44th St. and Camelback. The address is 4233 E. Camelback Rd. Phoenix, Ariz. It is open 6:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. For more information call 480.251.888 or visit www. carmelsbreakhouse.com

TALKING STICK RESORT ANNOUNCES NATIONAL CONCERT LINE-UP FOR NEW OUTDOOR CONCERT POOL VENUE

The pool isn’t just for swimming this spring at Talking Stick Resort as the property unveils its new outdoor concert venue. With its recent renovations, the main pool now includes a new stage plus capacity for more than 4,000 poolside party-goers! Other changes include a new day lounge pool that will allow guests to be half in and half out while soaking up the sun in one of the 16 lounge chairs that are immersed in the pool. In addition to the day pool, six cabanas have been added to the area bringing the total to 27. Those renting a cabana will be treated like a VIP, as each will be outfitted with flat-screen TVs, furniture, ceiling fans and refrigerators. Seating at the pool also now includes 12 daybeds including eight canopied daybeds. Rounding out the new venue is the new stage. A Stageline Mobile Stage, this 40 x 60 foot SL320 converts from trailer to a stage. Along with the stage will be state-of-the art sound and lighting sophisticated enough to present some of the nation’s top headline acts. However, before bringing in an impressive roster of headliners, Talking Stick Resort will reveal its pool renovations during a two-day musical event honoring some of music’s hottest performers. Beginning Saturday, April 12, Talking Stick Resort’s TributeFest will kick off with such tribute artists as Queen Nation: A Tribute to the Music of Queen, Bonfire: A Tribute to AC/DC and DSB: A Tribute to Journey. Each will take over the new outdoor stage and seamlessly recreate the sound of the originals.

The celebration will resume Sunday evening on April 13 with the musical styling of Strange Days: A Tribute to the Doors, Fan Halen: A Tribute to Van Halen and Led ZepAgain: A Tribute to Led Zeppelin. Guests will lounge poolside as the authentic tribute acts deliver highenergy renditions and play a collection of power anthems. “This event is truly one for the record books as it is the first of its kind in Scottsdale,” said Ramon Martinez, Director of Public Relations for Talking Stick Resort. “We have an exciting music lineup scheduled this year and thanks to the pool expansions, we’ll be able to accommodate up to 4,000 guests.” The outdoor concert series will be offered all summer long, allowing fans to enjoy live entertainment as they take in the sun’s rays. Following the property’s tribute festival; several local and national acts are already slated to perform on the pool’s stage including Roger Clyne & the Peacemakers on May 2, Staind on June 8 and 311 on June 29! Cocktail specials, reclining daybeds and cabana rentals will also be available. The TributeFest is free. Tickets for Roger Clyne & The Peacemakers, Staind and 311 can be purchased at the Talking Stick Resort Box Office. To learn more, visit www. talkingstickresort.com or call (480) 8507734. Guests must be 21 or older to attend.

“Psych” concludes its eight-season run Wednesday on USA Network.

BY KATE O’HARE

It’s all over for ‘Psych’ In upscale chain restaurant on a busy road in Manhattan Beach, Calif., not far from the production offices of the USA Network comedy-drama “Psych,” and roughly 1,286 miles from the show’s filming location in Vancouver, Canada, star James Roday and series executive producer Steve Franks get together for lunch to discuss not staying too long at the party. “For a lot of people,” quips Franks, “our second episode was too long at the party.” Obviously not for everyone, because the show airs it eighth-season – and series – finale on Wednesday, March 26, followed by the “Psych After Show,” a one-hour special hosted by Kevin Pereira (“Attack of the Show”) and featuring a Q&A with the cast and Franks, in front of a live studio audience in Los Angeles. For those who need to go do some binge viewing in a hurry, “Psych” features Roday (today sporting a full beard that’s about a half-inch short of edging into Old Testament patriarch territory) as Shawn Spencer, a native of Santa Barbara, Calif., who uses his Sherlock Holmes-level powers of deduction to convince people he’s a crimefighting psychic. At his side are his best friend from childhood, Burton “Gus” Guster (Dule Hill); his ex-cop dad, Henry (Corbin Bernsen); detective girlfriend Juliet (Maggie Lawson); Police Chief Karen Vick (Kirsten Nelson, who directed the show’s musical episode, which aired in December); and idiosyncratic Detective Carlton Lassiter (Timothy Omundson). So without further ado, here are Franks and Roday on taking “Psych” out on a high note. On missing Vancouver ... Roday: “I personally, am not. I love Vancouver, truly, but I did spend, in all, four years over there – a whole presidential term, in hotels and apartments without air conditioning.” Franks (who has been staring intently at the sound-level indicators on the smartphone recording the conversation): “It also works as a hypnotist’s device.” On feeling good about the end of it all ... Roday: “We’re at peace with the decision to call it a show, because honestly, I feel like we did everything we could think of, just about. I always make a notebook every year of ideas that I want to do every season. I went back, and the ones we didn’t do, I don’t really feel like, ‘Oh, dang, we didn’t do that thing.’ ” Franks: “At the end of every year, James and I would get together, and we would talk about how we were going to push the boundaries of what the show was allowed to do each year. And, if we couldn’t figure out a way to push the boundaries any more, we both said, ‘OK, we’ll be done at that point.’ “And this year, we’re remaking one of our own episodes, and James’ zombie episode is so – it’s just so free. It’s completely free.”

Business never better for Eklund on ‘Million Dollar Listing new York’ These are heady days to be in Manhattan real estate, what with supply lagging behind a demand driven to an all-time high by foreign buyers, and interest rates staying at near-historic lows. Fredrik Eklund, agent for Douglas Elliman Real Estate and one of the stars of Bravo’s “Million Dollar Listing New York,” which returns for its third season Wednesday, April 2, just enjoyed his best month ever since he began selling properties in New York’s richest borough. “In February, the shortest month of the year,” he says, “I sold $152 million in one month, which is about triple the highest amount I sold in a month in 2013, which made No. 1 in the nation. ... “I’ve been doing this for 12 years,” he continues. “I’ve never seen anything like it. ... It’s booming now more than it ever has before, more than 2006 and 2007, before the downturn. The pricing is crazy; it’s very strong. You have like a perfect storm of a lot of new developments, which I control most of, and then buyers international and even sellers, which is unique. Sellers are putting their apartments on the market, so there’s a really healthy, moving, liquid market right now, yes. And interest rates are fairly low.” This season, much of the drama will come from the agents’ personal lives, as Eklund settles into married life and considers children, fellow agent Ryan Serhant tries to balance his career with a new relationship, and Luis D. Ortiz moves out of his brother’s apartment and into a luxurious bachelor pad of his own.

Fredrik Eklund Drew Carey

And then, of course, there are the deals, which can enrich agents beyond imagination but leave them emotionally drained. “I like the difficult deals,” Eklund admits, “although I don’t feel like it at the time, when you’re crying and pulling your hair. Looking back at them, even when you fail, there is something about them that makes you remember them; you grow from them, and you change with them. “So the month of February ... I’m going to remember it with a happy heart, but it’s not like I learned anything from it, really. All the deals went so easily and quickly that the more difficult ones are, in a way, more interesting.” By Jay BoBBin

Checking in with Christopher Meloni Christopher Meloni’s new series isn’t so much about the law, but there’s no question he’s still trying to maintain order. Three years after ending his long “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” run as Detective Elliot Stabler, the actor goes for laughs in the Fox sitcom “Surviving Jack,” premiering Thursday, March 27. Bill Lawrence (“Cougar Town”) is among the executive producers of the 1990s-set show, based on Justin Halpern’s autobiographical book “I Suck at Girls.” Meloni basically plays Halpern’s father, a no-nonsense doctor who becomes a Mr. Mom to his teen children when his wife (Rachael Harris) starts law school. “I was kind of leaning toward this arena,” Meloni confirms of tackling a more humorous project than he usually has lately, “and it’s been borne out in that I feel lighter in my day.”

Carey, Ferguson trade places Drew Carey isn’t lacking for television jobs these days, but he’s taking on an additional one anyway. It’s only for one night, though, and for a very specific occasion: April Fools’ Day. The host of CBS’ weekday game show staple “The Price Is Right” and Season 18 contestant on ABC’s “Dancing With the Stars” trades places with the host of CBS’ “The Late Late Show With Craig Ferguson” as they preside over each other’s programs Tuesday, April 1. The stunt is one that broadcast networks attempt every so often. A memorable instance was in 2003, when Katie Couric and Jay Leno swapped time periods on NBC for a day. Leno filled in for Couric in the co-anchor role she had then on “Today,” while she assumed his place on “Tonight,” opening monologue and all. In the case of Carey and Ferguson, their skills might be a bit more evenly matched, though each still will have his challenges. A big appeal of Carey as Bob Barker’s “The Price Is Right” successor is his interaction with contestants. His improvisational skills factor in, since

AZWeeklyMagazine.com

he never quite knows what he’ll get when a player joins him – and improv certainly is something Carey knows well, also considering his “Whose Line Is It Anyway?” tenure. The amiable Carey’s interactions with late-night guests are likely to be harmless ... though one might wonder how he’ll get along with Ferguson’s perpetually snarky skeleton-robot sidekick, “Geoff.” Ferguson is famous for being edgy in his own right and for his stream-ofconsciousness thinking that often takes offramps from the typical highway of celebrity interviews. How that will work with players on “The Price Is Right” could prove intriguing, though Ferguson is smart enough to know the game is the thing. For him, that doesn’t apply only to the April Fools’ Day tradeoff: Starting this fall, Ferguson also will host the syndicated weekday “Celebrity Name Game” – so to a degree, “The Price Is Right” is a trial run. However he and Carey fare on each other’s stages, though, they get to go back to their day (or night) jobs soon afterward.

The High-End Beer Division of Crescent Crown”

BEER JOURNALISM

The dean of all beer writers has to be Michael Jackson (not that one, the other one). Jackson is probably the most famous of all beer writers and an inspiration to most current ones. He came to the attention of the beer community back in 1977 when his first book, The World Guide to Beer, was published. This book has been reprinted several times and translated in to ten different languages. More importantly, this book set the groundwork for the modern theory of Beer Styles. In the World Guide, Jackson categorized beers in to styles commonly used today, based on local traditions and names. Jackson was always very good at putting his beer reviews in context as local culture for each beer was always a prominent part of his writing. It is this writing that inspired young brewers in many cities throughout the latter part of the twentieth century to create their own local beer cultures. This seminal work, along with President Jimmy Carter’s signing of a small law legalizing homebrewing provided the base for

the craft beer explosion we see today.

Michael Jackson went on to be a prolific writer, penning twenty books and providing copious amounts of copy for newspapers and magazines. He also had a show on The Discovery Channel aptly titled The Beer Hunter. Others have tried to usurp this name, but there is only one who can claim the title. What has Jackson said about Arizona? He only made a couple of visits here, but in 1997, he spoke highly of the fledgling McFarlane Brewing located on South 29th Street in Phoenix. McFarlane’s is no longer with us, but a few years ago, Papago Brewing pulled out an eight year old keg of their barley wine and it was still spectacular. The only other thing he had to say about Phoenix beer was not complimentary, but it should be noted that his disparaging comments were made upon tasting the Chili Beer that seems to be all many tourists know about beer in this state. Jackson, who was also a world famous whiskey critic, passed away on August 30th, 2007 at his home in London. He would have celebrated his 72nd birthday last week.

appeared in two beer magazines, Celebrator and All About Beer. Eckhardt also authored a must read book titled, The Essentials of Beer Styles, which furthered Jackson’s earlier work and covered new ground in continuing to define the many traditional as well as evolving beer styles in the world. Many people know Eckhardt simply as Fred, which is convenient, because Portland brewery, Hair of the Dog honored him by naming a beer, “Fred.” Fred, the beer, is a big, bold, flavorful product which provides a wonderful drinking experience, and, as further homage to its namesake, ages well. Fred also may be the only beer personality to have his very own beer festival. Fredfest is a small event held in May of each year to commemorate Eckhardt’s birthday. It always features some amazing rare beers and is a great celebration of the life of a true legend in the industry. The picture that accompanies this article shows him with famed publican Don Younger who owned one of the original craft beer bars, The Horse Brass Pub, in Oregon.

In previous articles, we have talked about San Francisco as being a premiere beer destination, so of course they have plenty of local bloggers and beer writers. Quite possibly the best of these, and one of the best in the country, is Jay Brooks. Brooks, who was a former corporate buyer for BevMo, maintains an incredibly informative blog titled Brookston Beer Bulletin (www.brookstonbeerbulletin. com). Prior to that, Brooks was the General Manager of the Celebrator Beer News, a national “brewspaper.” He has also been active as a freelance writer regionally, nationally and internationally. The man whom Brooks would consider the top beer writer in the Bay Area was named William Brand, who wrote a regular column in the Oakland Tribune. Brand was tragically killed in an accident in 2008 and Brooks took over the column of his close friend. On the other coast, Philadelphia is a hotbed of great beer, both high end imports and craft. Somehow despite Pennsylvania’s archaic liquor laws,

Fred Eckhardt’s primary beat is the Pacific Northwest, one of the meccas of craft beer. Eckhardt, now 88 years old, was a contemporary of Jackson and remains an active writer, critic and historian. His reputation for being a bit of a character in his hometown, Portland, has also made him a “beer personality.” He is known as a homebrewer and advocate for craft beer. Most of his articles have

Just as there is an art to brewing great beer, there is an art to writing about great beer. And while many people attempt it, there are only a small handful that truly do a good job with it. Sadly, I am not in that group, but I do know of several people that are and thought it would be fun to talk about them a little bit and give you an opportunity to find something to read about beer that’s better than this. I mean something besides the back of the bottle. Anyway, here is a look at some of the top beer journalists and writers.

this city has become one of the best beer cities in the country. Right in the middle of this incredible beer scene is Lew Bryson. Bryson is self described as the award-winning, beer-drinking, whiskey-sipping, brewery-visiting, cask-tapping, thirst-creating drinks writer. He certainly fits that bill. He maintains a terrific blog titled, Seen Through a Glass, has an informative web site (www.lewbryson.com) and has inked several books covering the history of brewing in Michigan, New York, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, Virginia and New Jersey. Bryson also writes from time to time for national publications and is one of the first people called when local media needs a “beer perspective”. His latest crusade has him taking on the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board, and attempting to bring them into slightly more modern times, if not abolish them outright. These efforts alone are worth checking out his web site.

There are many other truly good beer writers out there, each with his or her own specialty. Each with his or her own perspective on beer. Many of them are regional in scope and write for blogs, local papers, regional magazines and “brewspapers” (there is that word again, isn’t it kind of a neat concept?). To find them, just look for a copy of Celebrator, Ale Street News, Southwest Brewing News, DRAFT Magazine or any of the others you can find online or at the newsstand. If we all continue to drink and discuss great beer, who knows, maybe someday Arizona will even have a decent beer writer to call our own. Until then, you’re stuck with me. Let’s go have a beer.

THE BOULDERS GOLF CLUB ADDS DIGITAL CADDIES TO GOLF CARTS The world-class golf courses at The Boulders, a Waldorf Astoria Resort, recently added Digital Caddies (multifunctional, Internet-connected, highresolution tablets) to all the golf carts. Golfers are now treated to a host of useful and engaging applications and services including GPS-based course navigation, touch screen interaction and on-course messaging. The platform also provides the ability for golfers to notify the beverage cart of their location to receive more prompt service, keep score, set up real-time leader boards, access news, weather, sports, and other online content. The Digital Caddies Player’s Network tablets are wirelessly connected to the Web through Sprint’s nationwide high-speed network, providing the Boulders golf course with a broad portfolio of real-time course management tools via GPS-based cart tracking and communications. These tools enable course operators to improve the golfers experience and pace of play, increase merchandise and concession sales via real-time on-tablet promotions, and access additional revenue streams.

AzRattlers_AZWeekly_Ad_9.125x5_March26.indd 1

“The Digital Caddies Player’s Network is an excellent way to enhance the quality of the player’s experience at our facility while also providing us valuable tools to operate our courses more efficiently,” said Tom McCahan, Director of Club Operations at The Boulders. “The quality of the user experience for both us and our customers clearly meets with the high standards we have at our world class facility.”

To reserve a tee time or any of The Boulders Golf Academy programs, contact The Boulders Golf Shop at

Beginning May 26th, The Boulders Golf Club is offering exceptional cool summer values and golf instruction at the Boulders Golf Academy. To make a round of golf even “cooler,” iced towels and cool “Otter Pops” will be served to golfers throughout the game. Summer merchandise in the Boulders Golf Shop is also reduced to cool prices during the summer. Weekdays (Sun-Thurs) green fees are offered at $65/person (before 9am) and only $55 (after 9am) compared to winter green fees that are $225/ person. Weekends (Fri/Sat) green fees will be offered at $75/person (before 9am) and only $65/per person.
