You were in the Army during Iraq War, including the invasion of Baghdad. How do you feel about alQaeda reoccupying parts of Fallujah, which many U.S. Marines died to secure?

When did you know you were an actress?

I didn’t know on a conscious level. I went to college with the intent of being a physical therapist. I went to Spelman (College, in Atlanta) as a biology pre-med major. Once you knew, did you tell your parents?

I lost a lot of faith in the leadership of this country a long time ago. It’s pretty sickening to me. We’re not on the same page. I was in Fallujah. My friends that I talk to, we talk about it every once in a while. It’s just one of those things where it’s pretty sickening, to be honest with you. There’s not much to say about it. What are you going to do?

BY KAte O’HAre

I think I am supposed to be here, but my parents think they are getting a doctor out of the deal. When did you broach it with them?

We fought in Fallujah for months, and to know what we did over there, that it was all for just to let them take it back over ... I don’t know.a

By Jacqueline cutler “THE LITTLE RASCALS SAVE THE DAY” A classic character group gets a new sheen with this comedy. While the faces are new, the names are the same as Spanky, Alfalfa, Buckwheat and company try to help a beloved bakery owner (Doris Roberts, “Everybody Loves Raymond”) stop her shop from

“ANCHORMAN 2: THE LEGEND CONTINUES” It was a long time coming, but television newsman Ron Burgundy (Will Ferrell, of course, who co-wrote the film with director Adam McKay) and his crew go back before the cameras in a sequel that’s virtually sure to please fans of the original comedy. It sends up the dawn of 24-hour news networks, as Ron leaves San Diego to join one in New York after being disappointed by not getting an expected promotion while his now-wife Veronica Corningstone (Christina Applegate) did. Steve Carell, Paul Rudd and David Koechner also are back on board, with Greg Kinnear and Kristen Wiig among newcomers ... plus some other very familiar faces, including Harrison Ford and Will Smith. ››› (PG-13, R and unrated: AS, P) (Also on Blu-ray and On Demand) “47 RONIN” Keanu Reeves learns the ways of the samurai in this fantasy adventure about a group of feudal warriors – the ronin of the title – who seek vengeance for the death of their master. Reeves’ character has an extra reason for being on the mission, since he’s in love with the deceased leader’s daughter

(Kou Shibasaki). The occasional appearances of witches and monsters add momentary visual interest, but some may find hanging with the story more of a challenge than expected; Rinko Kikuchi (“Babel”) and Cary Hiroyuki-Tagawa also appear. Chris Gerchman said he used what typists call the hunt-and-peck method to win the Arizona Shootout 75 presented by Super Clean at Tucson Speedway March 22. Gerchman, the reigning champion in the Lucas Oil Modified Series presented by Loan Mart , overcame challenges by series veterans Doug Hamm and Austin Barnes and newcomers Tripp Gaylord and Dylan Cappello to win for the second time this season and the 19th time overall in the popular touring series. “I was trying different stuff, just trying the track, and it changed on me,” Gerchman said, but most of the time the low road was the best road for the Spring Branch, Texas, resident. That’s where he was when he took the lead from Las Vegas resident Doug Hamm on lap 51 and that’s where he stayed when Gaylord and Barnes pressured him during the final laps. It was only following a restart with four laps to go, after the sixth and final caution, that Gerchman was able to put enough space between himself and his pursuers to relax. “Doug was strong,” Gerchman said of Hamm, who took the lead from Cappello on lap 18 and pulled away from the others in the 28-car field after him and Gerchman ran side-by-side and traded narrow leads on laps 25, 26 and 27. “Doug was a serious player

and I thought I might be in trouble.” That might have been true, too, if the yellow flag hadn’t waved for the first time after Roger Brown and JA Junior touched wheels in Turn 1 on lap 49. Gerchman was running second and had used the low line to close the gap between himself and Hamm and Hamm’s Phil’s Phabrication Chevrolet

restart after a red flag to clean up the oil left on the track by Scott Winters’ engine explosion. Unfortunately for Gaylord, that restart was negated by another yellow for Doug Carpenter’s oil-induced spin in Turn 4, and on the final restart Gerchman drove away from Gaylord and Barnes, who finished second and third, respectively.

It was Gerchman’s second straight win at Tucson. The first one came in June, 2010, when the series last appeared at the track. The 10-race series will resume with the E3 Sparks Plugs 75 Laps to Victory presented by General Tire April 19 at Lucas Oil I-10 Speedway in Blythe, California. The results:

had developed the rocker arm problem that eventually sidelined him with 20 laps to go. Gerchman swept into the lead on lap 51, with Cappello and Barnes chasing him. But during a flurry of cautions between laps 59 and 71 Cappello’s STR Chevrolet was hampered by an electrical problem. Cappello dropped back and Garcia Racing teammate Gaylord took his place stalking the leader. Gaylord, the son of former NASCAR driver Scott Gaylord, did get the lead briefly by grabbing the inside line and roaring by Gerchman on the

“I guess it wasn’t meant to be this time, but I’ll get it next time,” said Gaylord, who got a post-race hug from his father and a handshake from NASCAR star Hershel McGriff. “The restarts helped me a lot at the end. The car stuck to the bottom and I worked around a lot of people.” Barnes, the 2012 series champion, was the fast qualifier for the second time in as many races since returning to the series, but never really made a run for the lead and said, “the finish was better than the car was. It wasn’t a top three car tonight” due to persistent handling problems.

“I am continuously experimenting with art as a form of storytelling and social commentary,” stated Wesley Fawcett Creigh, acclaimed artist and participant in the third annual Park Place Chalk Art Festival. Creigh will create an 8-by-6-foot mural with a dozen other talented artists during the free festival, presented by Southern Arizona Arts and Cultural Alliance on Saturday, March 29 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday, March 30 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Each featured mural artist will draw throughout the weekend, displaying scenes from desert landscapes and cultural inspirations to natural history and animals. Artists specialized in working with children will also help contribute to the Park Place Chalk Art Festival Kidzone – a space where imaginations soar and children can participate in their own original pieces of chalk art. Stretching from the entryways of Macy’s to Sear’s at Park Place, 5870 E. Broadway Blvd., the event will expand to the indoor center courtyard of the mall this year as well. “This is a true community-enriching event that demonstrates the need for free, hands-on arts events of this scale in Tucson,” said SAACA Executive Director Kate Marquez.

TUCSON MUSEUM OF ART – ROSE CABAT AT 100: A RETROSPECTIVE EXHIBITION OF CERAMICS

80 12

Tucson Museum of Art celebrates the artistry of Rose Cabat--an American studio ceramicist living in Tucson. Considered one of the most important ceramic artists of the Mid-century Modernist movement, Cabat is best known for her innovative glazes on small porcelain pots called “feelies” which she developed in the 1960s. Her organic forms often resemble the shape of onions and figs, and her glazes range from organic to jewel tones. This exhibition will be a survey of her different styles from the 1960s until the present to celebrate the year of her 100th birthday.

While one mission of The Drawing Studio, a non-profit arts organization, is to teach the skills of visual literacy, another is to encourage and nurture artistic practice through exhibition. Exhibits, therefore, may encompass timely issues in the broad community as well as among artists. The “Love Your Mother (Earth)” exhibit intersects art and reality, a mission worthy of any arts organization. You will have the opportunity to add your voice—in the form of pledges, art statements, or photos—to the issue of the changing conditions on our earth when you attend the “Love Your Mother (Earth)” exhibit at The Drawing Studio.

The UA Studio Jazz Ensemble (aka Jazz A) was founded by Tom Ervin in 1972, and Jeff Haskell began conducting the ensemble regularly in 1977. In the 1980’s, the band was hired to tour with Dizzy Gillespie, exposing to the students the great teaching expertise Gillespie had at his command. Most recently, they undertook a groundbreaking, two-week performance tour throughout China - the only American jazz ensemble, professional or student, to play the Chinese large Poly Theaters.

Then on Sunday, the “Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day” is a gesture of acceptance, gratitude and honor to the members of our community who risked their lives to serve our country during the Vietnam War - this includes the Veterans and their families. The event will include a Motorcycle Escort starting at 11:15 a.m. in Sedona at Posse Grounds Park, 525 Posse Ground Road in Sedona. It will go through Cottonwood, Clarkdale, returning through Cottonwood and will proceed into its ending destination at Fort Verde State Historic Park.. The event at the Park kicks off at 1 p.m. with a full color guard to open the festivities. The event will include entertainment, food, information on Veteran’s benefits, and finish with a flag lowering ceremony at 4:30 p.m. Event is sponsored by the Town of Camp Verde, American Legion, American Legion Riders and Arizona State Parks. It is hoped that fellow Veterans from other wars, organizations both public and private, schools, as well as parents, spouses, children and friends of Vietnam Veterans, come out and be together during this day. Because a large part of the population had misgivings about the war, many Vietnam Veterans returned home to an unsupportive public. Local Vietnam

I was riding my bike home from work on a beautiful March afternoon when I stumbled upon a cute little neighborhood butterfly garden on Sparkman in central Tucson. I decided to stop and take pictures for a moment but I ended up staying for a few hours because there were so many interesting bugs and beautiful desert plants. Birds, bees, butterflies, praying mantis egg cases, beetles, flowers, palm trees and cacti were all prolific in this little hidden garden. I have lived on Sparkman for years and never knew

this garden existed, but it is an amazing example of what we should be doing with empty spaces in central Tucson. There are not many places in town where one can go and enjoy wildlife, especially in these types of central neighborhoods where many people are renters and are not quite dedicated to maintaining and enhancing the local environment. Vacant spaces and empty allies in central Tucson invite crime, but what if we could turn them into places where neighbors can meet and enjoy the outdoors right

down the street from our homes? The Sparkman neighborhood association and many volunteers partnered with TEP to make an empty and ugly dirt lot into an enticing little stroll for the entire community to enjoy. What if you didn’t have to venture to the outskirts of Tucson to take a stroll, what if you could do it on your way home from work, or while out walking the dogs, or an after dinner walk with the family? With our busy lives we need more spaces close to home like the Sparkman Butterfly Garden. Tucson needs more natural areas and we need to get out and walkabout in our own communities and get to know the people and animals we live with. On my Facebook page ‘Take a stroll with Niccole’ you can find videos and pictures of the garden as well as many other gorgeous areas in and around Tucson. If you are interested in enhancing your own neighborhood or if you have any ideas for implementing this kind of project

in central Tucson please email me at Takeastrollwithniccole@Gmail.com and let’s start something big. Get outside and take a trek this season!

BET, YOU

DIDN T KNOW! by Stan Robinson

,

REVIEWERS ROUNDTABLE The following are reactions from each of AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s film commentators in an effort to generate a wellrounded overview of this weekend’s new releases.

‘Cheap Thrills’

Natalie Portman, during shooting the ‘Black Swan’ (2010) dislocated her rib. The film’s budget was so low they couldn’t afford a medic, so she gave up her trailer so one could be hired.

BET, YOU

DIDN T KNOW! by Stan Robinson

‘Blood Ties’

‘Cesar Chavez’

Clive Owen and Billy Crudup play brothers who, on either side of the law, face off over organized crime in Brooklyn during the 1970’s. Marion Cotillard, Mila Kunis, Zoe Saldana and James Caan also star. (R - 127 minutes)

Michael Peña portrays a man who, torn between his duties as a husband and father and his commitment to bringing dignity and justice to others, embraces non-violence as he battles greed and prejudice in his struggle for the rights of farm workers. (PG-13 - 101 minutes)

Joseph: “Blood Ties” boasts a spectacular soundtrack, an authentic atmosphere and a talented cast but is convoluted narrative seems to go everywhere and nowhere at the same time with placid pacing and a too-long runtime.

Stan: Returning home from Vietnam in 68’ in the midst of changes on all fronts, this film with Michael Peña’s excellent portrayal, personifies the name that was in the news as it chronicles the obstacles that had to be overcome. Joseph: “Cesar Chavez” effectively communicates the tale of its namesake, educating audiences who may or may not be familiar with him or be aware of the significant impact that he has had on so many lives.

‘Le Week-End’

‘The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly’ (1966) is actually a prequel to the previous Sergio Leone/Clint Eastwood ‘Dollars’ movies with the iconic ‘Man With No Name’.

Jim Broadbent and Lindsay Duncan play a long-married couple who revisit Paris for a long weekend for the first time since their honeymoon, in hopes of rekindling their relationship - or, perhaps, to bring it to an end. (R - 93 minutes) Stan:With trying too hard to straddle the ‘proverbial fence of ambiguity’, the film ‘Le Week-End’ forces the viewer to work a bit

Pat Healy plays a struggling family man who, along with his friend (Ethan Embry), is roped into a series of increasingly dangerous dares by an obscenely wealthy stranger (David Koechner) and his mysterious wife (Sara Paxton). (NR - 85 minutes) Stan: In these trying, economically challenging times, ‘Cheap Thrills’ reminds us that there are no boundaries of just how far one may have to go when the very survival of family is the paramount concern. Randy: What would you do for money? Watch this sadistic, crazy comedy over and over again. Those with a sick sense of humor will love it! Oddly reminiscent of last year’s ‘The Brass Teapot.’ Joseph: The amoral masterpiece “Cheap Thrills” is entertainment at its very best, forcing us to ask ourselves about the lengths that we would be willing to go - and the boundaries that we would be willing to cross - to better our circumstances.

harder than most as it strives to present the drama of the couple and the theme of ‘will they, or will they not’ move forward with their relationship. Joseph: Although there is a handful of amusing scenes - thanks primarily to the tremendous talent of its two stars - “Le Week-End” falls mostly flat as we are never compelled to care deeply enough about their problems or encouraged to genuinely celebrate their joys.

SOUNDBITE SPOTLIGHT The following quotes were pulled from interviews conducted by AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s film columnists with talent speaking on behalf of movies recently released in theaters.

Director Diego Luna (‘Cesar Chavez’) By Joseph J. Airdo

“I think that it is time to celebrate the story and the legacy of Cesar Chavez in film. The 10 years that I am talking about happened in the 60’s and the beginning of the 70’s. That is the piece of Cesar’s life that I wanted to portray in cinema because I think that it is time to talk about what needed to happen for us to be here today and to raise a little awareness of the experience of farm workers in this country.

“This is a community that is feeding the country and deserves to be recognized and celebrated. We tend to think that food arrives magically to the stores or to the restaurants but it is the work of many behind it. And this is also a story that shows us that change is in our hands. It is a beautiful message of equality, of respect and of change happening because people got connected with other people.

“Our strength is in our numbers. Change can happen if you go out there and find out who thinks like you do. If you raise your voice at the same time with everyone that feels or thinks like you do, you can be heard. It is about getting out there and finding who thinks like you do and finding that connection with others - not what separates you.” – Diego Luna

Actor Michael Peña (‘Cesar Chavez’) By Stan Robinson

“As an actor, sometimes you can get ‘over directed’, and pretty soon a director will start to line-read you and that’s never fun. And I don’t think the final product is ever good, in fact most of the time probably just general, because you’re saying something the way other people want you to say it. I’ve seen movies like that and say to myself ‘What’s weird about this movie’, it doesn’t have a really defined point of view or the actor doesn’t totally feel it.

“I’ve had so many different parts, and you know how it is with actors, you can AD them one year, and then the next year they’re so much better, or they’re not. Sometimes maybe they’ll get lazy for a little bit, or there’s drama in their personal life so they’re distracted during the shooting of a certain role, or, they’ll get that ‘spark’ you talked about that’s so important for an actor to have.

“That’s our job mainly, to keep inspired, and be inspired, and that’s what I’ve been trying to do for the most part. I’ve been trying to keep that energy going, and it is a learning process because if you shut everything down and pretend like you know everything, then you don’t know anything and then you’re going to be doing predictable work. I truly hope to do a character justice when I take on a role.” – Michael Peña

Actor Ethan Embry (‘Cheap Thrills’) By Joseph J. Airdo

““The first thing that drew me to [‘Cheap Thrills’] was the script. I think that [David Chirchirillo and Trent Haaga] really did a great job with the script because it touches on what so much of the world - the United States in particular - is going through right now, which is economic struggles and the disparity between the 1 and the 99 percent. “It touches on things that we can all identify with and then puts them in a completely outlandish situation. And it just gets nuttier and nuttier and crazier and crazier. When I read the script, I knew that it was going to be something that triggers a lot of different emotions in its audience - from laughter to fear and there is even

a little bit of sadness. For me, that is all I want to do trigger an emotional response in people. “That is the main goal of [‘Cheap Thrills’]. The film itself is a thrill. It does touch on the corporate world that we live in and how a lot of the things that drive our daily lives are run and controlled by psychopaths. In a way, David Koechner plays the puppet master - that ultimate psychopath that is controlling Pat [Healy] and I. In a whole, it sort of touches on modern civilization but the bottom line of it is a crazy ride. It is a popcorn thriller. It is a thriller that leaves you thinking after.” – Ethan Embry
