Photographers Compete to Benefit Daisy Mountain

Anthem- For the residents of Anthem and New River, Arizona, Daisy Mountain is their collective backyard treasure. Since March 1st, folks across the Valley have been capturing the beauty of this landscape on film while also helping to preserve it for generations to enjoy. For the second year, North Country Conservancy is hosting its photo contest to promote the preservation of Daisy Mountain. The creative focus is to depict the sereneness of this beautiful landmark or show Arizona flowers, cacti and other plants and animals that are native to the community. “This is a terrific way to get people out to enjoy and experience Daisy Mountain first-hand while also

being a part of keeping it a special place,” says Ann Hutchinson, Executive Director of North Country Conservancy. Continuing through October 1st, the photo contest will award 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners with various prizes. An award celebration event will be held in October. Last year’s 1st place winner was Andrea Searle, whose image, ‘Spring in Arizona’, took top honors. Kazu Okutomi of Kazu Photography and Mike Spinelli of Mike Spinelli Photography were last year’s contest judges, and they will officiate again this year. 2009 sponsors include Gutowski Cabinet Works and Studio West, both in Anthem. Sponsorship opportunities at various levels are still available. To sponsor or to participate, visit www. daisymountain.org or call (623) 7246514 for more information.

The Monsters and Aliens have Arrived on Earth! By Stan Robinson Tales of monsters, creatures and otherworldly beings made their presence a permanent part of our social consciousness with the printed word. These stories had already taken hold in literary form as early as 1818 with the classic Frankenstein by 19 year-old author Mary Shelley. Perhaps the most memorable alien event to affect the whole country was the Orson Welles and the Mercury Theatre Players broadcast of the H.G. Wells novel, The War of the Worlds on Halloween, October 30th, 1938 (which eventually led to the FCC drafting new legislation

Limits (1963). The lighter approach kept the balance, making those same monsters and aliens that scared us acceptable. The TV series My Favorite Martian (1963), starring Ray Walston as the benevolent yet likable Martian and Earthling Bill Bixby as his roommate, made us comfortable with the thought they could just be living among us. And if that’s the case, what would the government be doing? Well, Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones gave us that answer with the Men in Black movies on one level, while David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson with The X-Files TV show and movie, gave us the clandestine view of the monsters and aliens. On March 27th, we’ll discover that monsters have been living among us and with the aid of the government, will rise to keep us safe when the invasion of Earth takes place in Monsters vs.

over characters/objects in the foreground or background within a scene. Large onscreen visual effects dictate equally large sounds and sound effects. Ethan Van der Ryn, the supervising sound editor, brought his creative and technological expertise for the “constantly scaled” sound. As in our real world, there’s close or faraway sound, whispers, echoes, and in some cases, no sound. With picture and sound, the ultimate and the most important aspect is the characters and the sound of their voices that brings the movie to life. With an animated film, that aspect of “life” is crucial. DreamWorks Animation release; directed by Rob Letterman and Conrad Vernon; written by Maya Forbes and Wallace Wolodarsky; Rated PG for sci-fi action, some crude humor and mild language; runtime: 94 minutes.

making it mandatory to have periodic announcements in dramatized broadcasts depicting fictionalized “live events”). The radio broadcast, with news style reports of Martians landing on the east coast, caused panic, solidifying our acceptance that we just could be susceptible to the thought, We are not alone! As the mediums of radio, TV, and film presented literary stories, we became quite used to monsters and aliens, as science-fiction became staples in the movies and the television series of the 1950s and ‘60s. The ‘serious’ visual approach to monsters and aliens was first represented by The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951 ) and TV shows like One Step Beyond (1959), The Twilight Zone (1959), and The Outer March 26th - April 1st, 2009

Aliens! Our first glimpse of this world, created by veteran feature film directors Rob Letterman and Conrad Vernon, was during Super Bowl XLIII last month when more 96 million worldwide viewers were presented the new generation of 3-D, on television! With the 3-D glasses, which were free at various outlets like grocery stores, the small screen had the “you are there” impact of the big screen. The directors, along with the DreamWorks creative team, utilized the barely two year old “InTru™ 3D” format, which combined DreamWorks Animation’s state-of-the-art, proprietary authoring tools with the latest Intel technology, resulting in a 3-D movie that puts the viewer virtually inside of the movie! Monsters vs. Aliens is SciFi Fun at its Animated Best!

By Stan Robinson DreamWorks latest project, Monsters vs. Aliens reminds me of how much fun scifi fantasy with humorous over-the-top characters can be! The technological presentation in 3-D IMAX gives this animated treasure a life of its own. The only item that was a chore is the 3-D glasses. The pair I had were a bit tight, feeling “clammed” to my head. I took them off from time to time to rest my temples. That aside, what a ride! The basis for this adventure is grounded in the familiar territory of an Area 51type secret governmental installation where “anomalies’” are kept from the rest of the world population. We find

out about “the area” through Susan (voiced by Reese Witherspoon), whose wedding sets up the opening of the movie. As she takes a reflective walk outside of the church before going in to be married, a meteorite comes hurtling to Earth. On impact, a strange “ooze” splatters on Susan, and moments later- to the amazement of the wedding participants- she grows to 50 feet tall! The meteorite was being tracked as it was heading toward Earth, and right on cue the military arrives to take Susan in to custody! When she wakes from being tranquilized at capture, she’s in “The Area”. Once there, she is renamed Ginormica and placed in confinement. Susan meets the other group of “monsters” including the brilliant but insect-headed Dr. Cockroach, Ph.D.; the macho half-ape, half-fish called “The Missing Link”; a gelatin based anomaly whose virtually indestructible called B.O.B.; and the 350-foot caterpillar called Insectosaurus. Their confinement is cut short when a mysterious alien robot lands on Earth and begins a reign of destruction! After the might of the military has no effect, the commander of “the area”, General W.R. Monger, persuades the President to use the “monsters” to do battle with the Alien Robot, and save the world from imminent destruction! This is a fun ride, and important lessons are passed along relating to friendships, commitments, and loyalty. And parents, with the PG rating, Monsters vs. Aliens is suitable for the younger (5 and 6 year old) family members. Voice actors include Witherspoon as Susan Murphy; Hugh Laurie as Dr. Cockroach, Ph.D.; Will Arnett as The Missing Link; Seth Rogen as B.O.B.; Stephen Colbert as The President; Rainn Wilson as Gallaxhar; Paul Rudd as Derek Dietl; and Kiefer Sutherland as General W.R. Monger.

The Haunting in Connecticut: Truth Hurts Stan Robinson, ScreenScene.org

Randy Montgomery, AZ Weekly Film Critic

WEEKEND BOX OFFICE BIGGIES Top Grossing Movies from March 20th through March 22nd

The Haunting in Connecticut has the traditional “bump scars” of a thriller, while drawing one into the secrets of the house with the mysterious past. It’s a first rate thriller that’s more psychological than the traditional thrillers with blood and gore as a main catalyst. I was reminded of one of my favorite psychological thrillers in this genre, the classic 1973 move titled The Legend of Hell House starring the late Roddy McDowall.

By Stan Robinson Psychological thrillers based on true stories and events are the ones that lay in the back of my mind, before and after seeing them. This story, based on actual occurrences, certainly lingers in the memory long after the movie ends… The Campbell family has a long commute to the clinic where their teenage son is

They get the home at a very good price with no idea of the house history. They later discover that their new home is a former mortuary with a dark past. And their teenage, cancerstricken son just may hold the key to their

Great for a Man Date – I Love You, Man By Randy Montgomery

Jason Segel with Paul Rudd in I LOVE YOU, MAN. Photo by: Scott Garfield. Copyright © 2008 Paramount Pictures. All rights reserved.

Working a full time job and reviewing films on the side makes it hard to meet new people, especially buddies. I worked full time while going to college and missed out on the typical “college experience.” And night classes are not exactly the best place to make friends and build life-long relationships. Sitting in a dark theatre four to five nights per week also makes it tough to socialize, so I completely sympathize with Paul Rudd’s character, Peter Klaven, in the new comedy, I Love You, Man. Rudd plays a busy real estate agent in Los Angeles who is struggling to find a buyer for Lou Ferrigno’s multimillion dollar estate high up in the hills. Peter may not have many guy friends, but he has met the girl of his dreams, Zooey (Rashida Jones). He asks her to marry him, and she says yes. There’s just one problem though; he needs a Best Man. Peter is short on guy friends and filling out his side of the wedding party poses a challenge. Zooey and his family suggest he go on “man dates” to find a good guy

friend that can fill the role. After several failed attempts (and a French kiss later), Peter seems to be at wit’s end. His dreams of finding the perfect guy come true when in walks Sydney Fife (Jason Segel) to his open house. Sydney has no interest in buying the Ferrigno estate; he is simply there to eat the food and scope out the divorcees. He strikes up a conversation with Peter and it is man-love at first sight. The two end up hanging out and find that they have quite a bit in common, and despite many noticeable differences, their personalities complement each other. Peter becomes good friends with Sydney, but that friendship starts to interfere with his romantic relationship with Zooey. Peter must find a balance between the two, or face losing both. I Love You, Man is non-stop hilarity form start to finish. The supporting cast, which includes Jamie Pressly, Jon Favreau, Jane Curtin, J.K Simmons and Andy Samberg, delivers numerous laughs. While not as funny as he was in Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Jason Segel is just as entertaining. The real star of the show is Paul Rudd, whose character requires quite a bit of physical comedy and facial expressions to pull off the part. This is by far the funniest role of his career and may be hard to beat for funniest role in a film this year. We’ll have to wait and see. I Love You, Man is genuinely funny, and somewhat heartfelt at the same time. Anyone in a working profession looking to make new friends will appreciate Peter’s struggle. Rudd and Segel are the comedy duo so far in 2009. I’m hoping for a sequel.

is an odd little girl who keeps to herself and often times hears strange voices in her head. Her teacher is baffled when she finds Lucinda locked in a closet underneath the gym. Those voices give her a unique power, and that gift is transferred onto paper and buried inside the capsule for future generations to find. Fast forward to present day and it is time for the capsule to be unearthed. The contents are distributed to current students. Caleb Koestler is given an envelope with Lucinda’s name on it. The contents are an odd collection of numbers that cover the paper. Caleb’s father John (Cage) gets a hold of the paper and decodes the schematic. What he finds is quite startling. It seems as if the numbers reveal a code that warns of natural and man-made disasters. Most of the

Unraveling the mystery behind the numbers is just part of the creepy fun. Mysterious “whisper people” keep appearing each night. Their agenda is unknown, but their presence will haunt you. Knowing is a first-rate thriller and a better than average science fiction piece. It manages to combine several genres and it works. While the story is somewhat familiar, the execution makes up for a plot that is at times somewhat predictable. Director Alex Proyas has created a haunting piece that will stay with you long after you leave the theatre.

I had seen the trailer for Knowing probably a dozen times. It looked like your standard thriller and your standard Nicholas Cage adventure/mystery flick. Don’t let the simple trailer fool you, however. This is one heck of a ride, not to mention one of the creepiest films released in quite some time. It was so creepy in fact, that I had goose-bumps for much of the film. The story beings in the Fall of 1959, during the grand opening of a brand new elementary school. Digital Dave Offers PC Spring Cleaning Tips

Spring is here and with that comes the urge to clean out the old and start anew. While you are rummaging around the house and doing your normal Spring cleaning, spend a few minutes at your computer to give it a good clean, too. If your hard drive is getting full, it’s a good time to delete old data or just purchase an external hard drive and off load some of that old data for storage; either way, you should always leave at least 1 Gigabyte of room for the operating system to work properly. It is always a good idea to defragment the hard drive. It does take some time but it can run in the background while you’re doing other things. Just go to All Programs | Accessories | System Tools to find the tool in Windows XP or type ‘defrag’ in the little start search window when you hit the start button in Vista. Deleting unused programs is the next place to really help out the performance of your PC. Go to your Add/Remove programs under the control panel and start deleting those old programs that are no longer in use. Next would be to get a little techie by opening up the System Configuration Utility. Click on Start | Run, and type msconfig in the window. Go to the Startup tab and uncheck all the applications that you don’t want to startup at boot time. If you’re not sure what the process is, go to http://www.processlibrary.com/directory/ and check it out before deleting it. Next, clean up the files on your hard drive by using Disk Cleanup. Programs menu under Accessories | System Tools | Disk Cleanup (or Start | Run… cleanmgr in Vista). This will help you clean up old downloads, temp files, unneeded system logs, and dump files. It will also help you remove unwanted system components. If you suspect you have a bunch of duplicate files on your system (happens a lot with iTunes music files or accidently copying a directory), here is a free app that will help you locate and delete them. Just type ‘Fast Duplicate File Finder’ in Google to find this app. It is made by MindGems and does a good job of helping you delete all those multiple copies.

Dilly’s: Above and Beyond Your Average Delicatessen By Melissa Burt

What do you expect from your friendly neighborhood deli? Fresh meats and cheeses? Your choice of bread? Perhaps a non-discriminating selection of potato chips, and a mandatory pickle wedge to boot? Would the occasional cookie selection reel you in? Ah, well you’re just too easy to please, or at least, that’s what Dilly’s thinks. At Dilly’s Deli and Gourmet Sandwich Shop, the staff believes in a standard sure to surpass that of a traditional delicatessen. All menu

sandwich, for under $7. Wrap fanatics: Dilly’s has you covered with five flavorful wraps that will knock your flip flops off. What’s that, you say? You’re in the mood for a light, crisp salad? Quite alright. Choose from six scrumptious recipes, with the option of a small or large portion, served with a slice of toasted bread. Chips are available, too, as is chipotle coleslaw and creamy macaroni salad. Dilly’s has a little something for everyone. Workaholics and web surfers alike can take advantage of free Wifi and prompt, friendly service. The menu boasts budgetfriendly lunch specials seven days a week, including a half sandwich with choice of side for a modest $4.50. Go ahead and bring the kids; they eat free all weekend, every weekend! Or feed the masses with Dilly’s award winning catering. Early riser? Give breakfast a makeover with Dilly’s famous Sonoran Sunrise: scrambled eggs, chorizo sausage, potatoes, colby-jack cheese, and southwest sauce served in a jalapeno wrap with a complimentary cup of ‘Joe’ for $3.99. And if you’re already a Dilly’s addict, don’t forget to flash your customer appreciation card each time you dine to earn points towards future gourmet treats! Impressed yet? but not limited to March of Dimes, Habitat for Humanity, and Ear Candy, an organization dedicated to developing and sustaining music programs for youth in the Phoenix Metropolitan area. According to Shaun Kelley, Owner, and Rebekah Edwards, Director of Marketing, Dilly’s traditionally donates 50% of all profits generated by the charity’s promotional efforts for one business day. A specific date and Dilly’s location is chosen, and all guests of the specified location have the opportunity to participate. By mentioning the name of the charity at the register, customers can be certain that 50% of the their meal price will benefit the featured organization. But leave it to this over-achieving deli to outdo themselves, offering Ear Candy 20% of all generated proceeds at ALL Dilly’s locations for five days solid! Marty Manning from KEZ 99.9 will be on site from 11am to 1pm with live music by Alex LoSardo and Joe Matysik. Lunch never sounded so good! Even with their niche and concept nearing perfection, Dilly’s has still managed to find room for improvement. Up and coming are a “fit fare” menu geared towards the low-fat and low-carb lifestyle, a more extensive and all-inclusive catering menu, new and unique sandwiches, and even a few more bread selections! Land Rover LR-2 Review and photo by Chad Haire

Trucks and Imports

If you like Land Rover vehicles but don’t want to spend a fortune, the entrylevel LR-2 is worth a look, with a base price starting at about $34,000. Mine was loaded up with luxury goodies, so it hit about 40 grand. So what do you get for this price? On the street, the LR-2 is a pleasure to drive. The ride is comfortable, the steering has good feedback, and the brakes are nice and firm. The interior is plush and comes standard with leather, all power items, and a nice stereo. I also had the optional navigation and Dolby sound system. For off-road trail busting, we get Land Rover’s famous Terrain Response computer that uses a console switch to change suspension and driveline calibrations depending on conditions. It works great in mud and sand. But keep in mind, there is no low-range gearing for hard use, and the vehicle’s lowground clearance won’t clear large desert rocks. The only gripe we had was with the sun roof, which is made of clear glass. It gives a nice view of the sun, but it turns the interior into a heated oven. The sliding shade is little help, but black spray paint will solve this problem! In the meantime, the LR-2 is a trendy rig that should sell well.

How did you get started in the industry? I decided one day to start DJing because there were no good dance nights anywhere in Phoenix. That was about 8 years ago and I’ve been DJing here and there since then. What’s the funniest thing that ever happened while performing? I haven’t performed enough to answer. Tell us a secret about yourself or your show: After the tenth shot the clothes come off. What’s the biggest misconception people have about DJs? No comment. What will people hear when they listen to your music? The best mix of Alternative, Industrial, Gothic, Indie, Electro, 80’s, Post Punk, Synthpop, and everything in between, played all in one night! If there were a “Golden Rule” for being a DJ, what would it be? Don’t spill a full bottle of Mad Dog 20/20 on your mixer. Your favorite place to play? The Ruby Room! If you could change one thing about the DJ-club scene, what would it be? More people need to get out and dance to some good music! Phoenix is the 5th largest city in the Nation. It’s time we catch up, and try to keep compete with LA and NY. What would you be doing if you weren’t DJing? I do lots of other things besides DJing; I have a day job and I run Helter Skelter Clothing.

BY BRENT DIGGINS AND EFIA MOORE

What a week, what a week! Between March Madness, beautiful weather, Spring Training and the variety of events going on around town, I’d think that the city of Phoenix is one of the most hopping places in the nation right now. Yeah, I said it! Phoenix is becoming a go-to destination for more than golf and retirement. Culture is forming before our eyes; restaurants we saw open 5-10 years ago are becoming community landmarks and anchors, events are becoming yearly traditions, and the first big wave of transplants is really considering Phoenix THEIR home, not just a stopover in life. With that, we Night Owls want to keep you in the know so keep reading on to find out what happened, what’s happening and what will happen in the Valley. Spa Week: I’ve always wanted to know what it would be like to live the pampered life. I imagine a life of carelessly traveling on a moment’s notice, indulging in luxurious spa treatments, and having a personal assistant I always called the wrong named simply because I was far too busy enjoying my life to remember small details. Sadly, it seems the pampered life is far beyond reach, except for indulging in luxurious spa treatments now and again. Spa Week Media recognizes everyone needs to be pampered and has partnered with top Valley spas, including Tocasierra and Tocaloma Spas, Red Door Spas, Arizona Biltmore Spa, Golden Door Spa at The Boulders Resort, Agua Spa at Mondrion, Nu U Unlimited MedSpas, The Salon & Spa at Scottsdale Resort, Revive Spa at JW Marriott and Hotel Valley Ho – VH Spa to offer elite spa treatments during the week of April 13-19. Even the most luxurious spa treatments like the 14 Carat Gold Facial, Ten Hands Massage, Botox injections and more are all priced at $50. To enjoy your taste of the pampered life, schedule an appointment and check-out participating spas, visit spaweek. com. Jonas Brothers: How much would you make fun of me if I said I was going to go to the Jonas Brothers concert? Okay, I would make fun of me too. Either way, I’m really considering thinking about buying tickets to their stop in Glendale on August 11th. Why? Because I love seeing something special, and opinions about their music aside, the Jonas Brothers are one of the biggest musical phenomena of the last forty years. Their “The Jonas Brothers World Tour 2009” stop in Glendale will feature supporting acts Jordin Sparks and Honor Society. Plus this show, entertainment-wise (lights/effects), is supposed to be about as big as they come with

a 140-foot stage centered in the arena with a one-of-a-kind circular water screen, multi-color laser effects, motion automated video screens, and a giant crane levitating over the audience. Needless to say, I’m intrigued by their popularity, stardom, and influence and want to see, first hand, what it’s all about. If you do too, you can purchase tickets at livenation.com which go on sale March 28th at 10:00am. The tour will be in support of their new album which comes out June 15th. Postino Central: A new Postino, Postino Central, is opening soon. An off-shoot of the popular Arcadia restaurant, this location is located on Central just north of Colter in Phoenix, and will be opening in the coming weeks. The original Postino is known for its friendly appeal to all ages, and features a great wine list and common wine bar fare like bruschetta, paninis, and salads. Postino Central hopes to become an integral part of its new community, and encourages people that are close enough to bike or use the light rail. Owner Craig DeMarco and his wife Kristen opened the original Postino Wine Cafe location in 2001, and their efforts netted them the 2007 Arizona Small Business Persons of the Year award. I’m sure this one will do well based on name alone, but they do serve a quality product and have picked another ideal location, which was a key ingredient to the tremendous success of the original location. Vino & Vinyasa: I’ve been trying to get into a yoga routine for awhile. Part of what’s been stopping me is finding the right class and schedule, the other part is finding the motivation to go. If only yoga classes were more like happy hour. Imagine flowing through a relaxing yoga routine then finishing the class by noshing on appetizers and sipping wine. Kona Grill at City North, Zenergy Yoga, and Lululemon Athletica must have read my mind because they have partnered together to create Vino & Vinyasa, a happyhour alternative. The event will be held at Kona Grill City North Sunday, March 29th at 5 – 7:30pm and includes relaxing Vinyasa-style yoga, chicken satay, calamari, potstickers, other appetizers, and wines. A minimum event donation of $35 per person is required with a portion of event proceeds benefiting Scottsdale’s Angel Mamas, a philanthropic organization. You can register for Vino & Vinyasa by calling Zenergy Yoga at (480) 6281453. For more event information visit, www. zenergyyoga.net. Be safe, be a good person. Till next time…

Are all cues created equal? Cue makers design their cues to play a particular way. The way a cue plays has an effect on the player’s

game. Cues are made with different joint materials, pins, and threads that provide a different feel- and a different result- when the tip strikes the cue ball. The materials used affect the energy transfer from the shaft to the butt end of the cue. The harder the material, the more resistance the energy faces, resulting in a firmer “hit” or feel of the cue. If you’re going to engage in this highly risky behavior, you’d better be sure this is going to go all the way to matrimony -- or one of you is going to suffer the loss not only of a romantic partner, but also of a job. And NEVER enter into an office romance if either of you are married. Then you hurt more than yourselves.

Although Office Romance is often a bad idea, it isn’t forbidden the way that it used to be. If you decide to date someone in the office you should use a little common sense. The best thing to do is not enter into an office romance at all. If you must, however, remember to date an equal in the company; never date a superior or a subordinate. A superior may fire you if you want to end the relationship and a subordinate can claim sexual harassment. If you are the superior in a well-known office tryst, it can tend to make others uncomfortable and it can also make you the office joke. Surveys show that more corporate employees are risking

Orange Crush; ASU Falters Against HotShooting Syracuse

Miami, FL- In what might have been his last college game, Sun Devil James Harden went 2-10 and scored just 10 points, all in the second half. In what was definitely his last college game, Jeff Pendergraph had 9 points and had just 2 rebounds, and fouled out with 10:19 left in regulation. The common factor? A pesky Syracuse zone defense that never let either of ASU’s horses out of the gate, though their teammates tried their best to pick up the slack in the 78-67 2nd round loss. Rihard Kuksiks March 26th - April 1st, 2009

and Ty Abbott each scored 20, but Orangemen Guards Jonny Flynn, Eric Devendorf, and Andy Rautins shot and passed their way to a regional semifinal matchup against the Oklahoma Sooners and Player of the Year Blake Griffin by going a combined 9-20 from 3-point land and dishing out 15 assists.

Brackets Intact: Top Seeds Tough it out

After suppressing some first round jitters and surviving the early scares that make the NCAA Tournament’s opening weekend so damn entertaining, each regional’s top 3 seeds are advancing to the ‘Sweet 16’ for the first time in March Madness history: (1) Louisville, (2) Michigan State, and (3) Kansas from the Midwest; (1) UConn, (2) Memphis, and (3) Missouri from the West; (1) Pittsburgh, (2) Duke, and (3) Villanova from the East; and (1) North Carolina, (2) Oklahoma, and (3) Syracuse from the South. Though there was no lack of heart-stopping hardwood action, like Siena’s 2OT win over Ohio State and Wisconsin’s Trevon Hughes’ twisting circus shot in OT to lift the Badgers over Florida State, the laws of probability eventually emerged from the initial cloud of chaos that defines the 1st round, with #12 Arizona the only double-digit seed left playing. And let’s not engage in any underdog fairy tale talk this year; U of A is one of the most successful and storied college basketball programs in the countrysome Cinderella! 2009 may see the

second straight year that the Final Four consists of all #1 seeds. Across America, office pools are still very much in doubt.

Up Close With SubmissionFighter Roland Sarria, Founder Of Rage In The Cage Written by Robert W. Young Courtesy of Rage In The Cage and Black Belt Magazine

With the Ultimate Fighting Championship having eclipsed the competition in the mixed-martial arts world, it’s easy to overlook all the other promotions that are quenching the thirst of fi ght fans. However, those events are churning out some of the sport’s best up-and-coming fighters, and their founders have a lot to offer martial artists aspiring to improve their game or even start a show of their own. In this exclusive interview, Roland Sarria, founder of Arizona-based Rage in the Cage, talks about the lessons he’s learned during his years in Brazilian jiu-jitsu and sub-mission fi ghting, along with the strategies he’s used to make his event a financial success. —Editor >> You’re something of an anomaly in the mixed martial arts because you’re a fighter as well as a promoter. How did you get started in the martial arts? While growing up in the Los Angeles area, I played high-school football. I was a good nose guard, but when you’re 5 feet 9 and weigh 155 pounds, you don’t get noticed by most college recruiters. So I went to El Camino Junior College and played for two years. I was a twotime All-American. While I was playing, I noticed that everybody was lifting weights. In contrast, I was into push-ups, pull-ups, sit-ups and so on. I got that from the Russians and Cubans—while watching the 1976 Olympics, I learned

I was fortunate to have developed three fighters who went on to compete in the UFC Joe Riggs trained with me for about seven years, as did Edwin Dewees. The late Gilbert Aldana—he drowned in a lake last year—fought in the UFC in 2006. And I’ve trained hundreds of fighters who’ve competed in Rage in the Cage and other organizations’ events. ... Continued Next Week.

ALLOWING THE TAKEDOWN: Roland Sarria (left) permits his opponent to take him down (1-2). He immediately underhooks the man’s left arm and places his right foot under his left thigh, after which he uses his momentum against him and rolls him onto his back (3). Sarria transitions to a side-control position (4), where he uses his arms and legs to crush his body while cranking his neck (5-6).

that they were into functional strength. So I did some research and started doing plyometrics. I was strong on the football field, while everybody else was strong in the weight room—where I was average. In games, I was able to overpower people despite my size. With that background, I started training with Rickson Gracie in 1994. I didn’t know anything about martial arts other than having taken a monthlong course with Chuck Norris in 1977. Rickson noticed that I was powerful, and when he fought in Vale Tudo 1 and 2, I was one of his training partners— while still a white belt. I had a lot of one-on-one training at Rickson’s academy in West L.A., and I never stopped. Did you ever compete? I competed quite a bit as a brown belt. I was 9-2, and I did nothing but superfights. For some reason, I always seemed to get into matches with Brazilian champions. I did the Copa Pacific, the Pan-American Games and Joe Moreira’s California championship. Once I got into promoting Rage in the Cage, I found it difficult to continue. I didn’t have the level of training partners I needed in Arizona because MMA was new to everyone here. It was hard to motivate myself. How did you transition from competing to promoting? I was a nightclub promoter in Los Angeles. In 1996 I visited a friend named John Wilker, a cage fighter. He was putting together an event, and I watched it and thought, I can do this. Then I moved to Arizona and put an ad in the paper. It said: “Want to fight? I dare you! Call me.” Word of mouth began to spread, and people seemed interested. I rented a boxing ring and had a cage built. We drew about 800 people for the fi rst show in 1998. I started thinking I might be able to make a living out of this. Where are you now? I have three gyms—one in Tempe, Arizona, one in Chandler, Arizona, and one in Casa Grande, Arizona. They’re all called Rage in the Cage Training Centers.

Actual exchanges between pilots and control towers: Tower: “TWA 2341, for noise abatement turn right 45 Degrees.” TWA 2341: “Center, we are at 35,000 feet. How much noise can we make up here?” Tower: “Sir, have you ever heard the noise a 747 makes when it hits a 727?” Eastern 702: “Tower, after we lifted off we saw some kind of dead animal on the far end of the runway.” Tower: “Continental 635, cleared for takeoff behind Eastern 702. Did you copy that report from Eastern 702?” BR Continental 635: “Continental 635, cleared for takeoff, roger; and yes, we copied Eastern... we’ve already notified our caterers.” One day the pilot of a Cherokee 180 was told by the tower to hold short of the active runway while a DC-8 landed. The DC-8 landed, rolled out, turned around, and taxied back past the Cherokee. Some quick-witted comedian in the DC-8 www.hoylarious.com

crew got on the radio and said, “What a cute little plane. Did you make it all by yourself?” The Cherokee pilot, not about to let the insult go by, came back with a real zinger: “I made it out of DC-8 parts. Another landing like yours and I’ll have enough parts for another one.” From an unknown aircraft waiting in a very long takeoff queue: “I’m f...ing bored!” Ground Traffic Control: “Last aircraft transmitting, identify yourself immediately!” Unknown aircraft: “I said I was f...ing bored, not f...ing stupid!” Pan Am 727 flight, waiting for start clearance in Munich, overheard the following: Lufthansa (in German): “Ground, what is our start clearance time?” Ground (in English): “If you want an answer you must speak in English.” Lufthansa (in English): “I am a German, flying a German airplane, in Germany. Why must I speak English?” Unknown voice from another plane (in a beautiful British accent): “Because you lost the bloody war!”

T-Shirt Co. Gives Valley Love What is Holy Piñata? Holy Piñata is a brand new t-shirt company based in Phoenix. It is owned and operated by longtime friends and Phoenix natives Andy Brooks and Danny Stoeller. All their artists are from Phoenix and the shirts are printed in the Valley as well. Each shirt is made with 100% combed cotton, proudly produced sweatshop-free by American Apparel, and they only cost $20.

Great, another T-shirt company. What’s so special about Holy Piñata? The company was created as a way to celebrate and represent the place Phoenicians call home. All Holy Piñata designs feature icons and landmarks from the Valley. It is hoped that these designs, particularly the marquee, ‘I CACTUS PHX’ shirt, will reflect this sentiment. But that’s just half of it. Stoeller and Brooks donate 10% of all sales to local charities, such as Phoenix Children’s Hospital, among others. They hope that by wearing a Holy Piñata shirt, one essentially says something like, ‘Look what I did! I love Phoenix and I got this shirt to prove it!’ So how’s it work? Once customers buy a shirt, they visit

with dynamic, unique features such as a captivating smile or an intriguing personality. Participants will be asked to fill out paperwork and waivers, have their photo taken, and be interviewed by casting call staff. Between 18 and 24 people will be chosen for the final shoot. “When we began considering models to appear in our advertising campaign, we quickly realized that fabulous potential models visit The Shops at Norterra every day,” said Marketing Director Stephanie Case. “That’s why we’re inviting the local community to participate. We

really want to feature area residents who know and love The Shops at Norterra.” The Shops at Norterra is home to Dick’s Sporting Goods, Best Buy, Harkins Norterra 14, P.F. Aimee Sugar of S.I.M. Agency www.sim-agency.com Interview by Christine Capuano You were a past model yourself, before becoming an agent, correct? Who were you signed with? Yes I modeled as a child in California and as a teenage locally here. I never signed with an agency, though. How did you come to the decision of starting up your own agency? I like to be in charge...I’m very ‘OCD’ and like things done a certain way; I don’t like answering to anyone else. What vision do you have for Arizona fashion in the next 5-10 years? Definitely more runway shows and higher-end print jobs and catalogs coming into town. AZ is such a beautiful state, more catalogs need to shoot here....well, not in the summer though!

This Week Visit The All New www.AZWeeklyMagazine.com

What do you believe sets S.I.M. apart from other Arizona agencies? We are much more of a personal relationship type agency. We really know our models, and most of the time their mothers/boyfriends/kids, etc. We hug, too. What do you look for when signing new talent? Looks first, then talent, then personality. If they don’t have all 3, it’s a no go. I am very big on feeling peoples’ energy. If I don’t feel a connection when I first meet them, I don’t sign them. Have you had to drop models before? If so, why? Oh, yeah; continuously being late to jobs or not showing up on a job. I run a tight ship; I do not put up with unprofessionalism, and that is why we have a stellar reputation.

Crossroads Dental Group & Orthodontics:

Huh?

Let the Bright Shine By Kevin Lambert

Facing the prospect of a trip to the dentist’s office is more than the average person’s required dose of daily anticipation, but then season that soup with a procedure you’ve never experienced before, and the idea of teeth improvement moves closer to absolute horror. A funny thing happens when you go to Crossroads Dental Group and Orthodontics in Chandler, however: the anticipation slowly melts away in the face of the bright smiles and eager-to-please attitudes of its staff; the high-tech, seemingly futuristic display of modern facilities and procedures designed to reduce discomfort; and a diverse choice of popular movies.

After visiting Crossroads Dental for a full cleaning, crown work, or other improvements, which usually don’t require more than one visit, many folks are coming back for the aesthetic icing on the cake. Teeth whitening procedures range from buying disposable bleaching products at the grocery store to having it done professionally. At Crossroads Dental, ZOOM! is the preferred product and procedure, and lasts from 15 to 45 minutes, depending on the desired shade of whitening. Though the ZOOM! promotional material promises little discomfort, it was my first time getting my teeth whitened, and I was nervous. Throughout the procedure there was no pain, but it seemed my fears were well-justified during the first five minutes, when the lovely Sharonlynmy personal ZOOM! Sherpa- shifted from the light, bubbly conversation of a docent as she gave me a tour to the technical speak of a mad scientist after sitting me down in the dental

chair and stuffing pink goo in my mouth. As my eyes widened with the fear of suffocation, she calmly reassured me that she was making molds for the whitening trays I would receive as part of the total whitening package Crossroads offers. After the molds were completed, Sharonlyn produced a rack of blockbuster movies, and nodded to the DVD player that sat atop the surface where I was used to seeing picks and pokes and water/spit vacuum tubes. Cool, I thought. This isn’t so bad. After I picked Lord of the Rings- The Two Towers, she set about inserting the mouth apparatus that clears the lips out of the way of the ZOOM! bleaching light; a weird sensation, but not uncomfortable or painful. 45 minutes later, with Frodo and Sam tentatively following Gollum across the dark landscape of Mordor, I was done and my teeth were a shade of white I had not seen since high school. “Is it over already?” I asked Sharonlyn, disappointed that I

couldn’t watch more of the movie. “That was nothing; let’s do it again!” She gave me a knowing look, evidence of previous patients who were pleasantly surprised with the ease of the procedure. “Just make sure that when you go home, don’t smoke or drink anything red, purple, or black; anything made with berries, that sort of stuff,” she advised. “Your teeth are very porous now, so you need to make sure you don’t color them with something that will ruin what we’ve done here today!” Crossroads Dental Group and Orthodontics epitomizes comfort and ease through advanced technology like the ZOOM! whitening procedure. For only $249, you should go get your shine on today. Crossroads Dental Group 2880 E. Germann Rd, Suite 13 Chandler (480) 821-5444 www.crossroadsdentalgroup.com

Chandler- Sophie Milman, creator of the 2008 Juno Award Winner for Vocal Jazz Album of the Year, Make Someone Happy, will perform at the Chandler Center for the Arts on Thursday, April 2nd at 7:30pm. After emigrating from Russia to Israel with her family at the tender age of 7, then moving again at 16 to seek a new life in Canada, the transition from bookish teenager to glamorous jazz ingénue was perhaps unlikely. It was the offer of a recording contract after just three or four professional singing engagements that touched off a series of events that soon found this beautiful, multilingual

talent gracing the cover of Voir, Klublife, Wholenote, and The Globe & Mail. Young, gorgeous, talented and sophisticated; Sophie Milman has toured the world and sold more than 100,000 records. Headlining sold-out shows in Canada, the U.S., Mexico, Japan, and throughout Europe, she has appeared on stage with international musical superstars like Aaron Neville and the Neville Brothers, Chick Corea, and Jesse Cook - and she’s only 25! She also balances her burgeoning music career with her commerce studies at the University of Toronto. Tickets are $22-$32. The Chandler Center for the Arts is located at 250 N. Arizona Ave. in Chandler. For more information, visit www.chandlercenter.org, www. sophiemilman.com, or call (480) 7822680.

Review by Stephen Wilkinson

Brian “Head” Welch’s much publicized departure from Korn a few years ago was based on his becoming a born again Christian. Having taken time to clean up from his addictions and start on his own, he has reemerged on his own as ‘Head’. Let the comparisons begin. Sure, there’s a Korn influence as Brian was a founding member of the band. He’s more or less entitled. But be prepared for his journey through the torments of childhood, a drug riddled past, and his current journey into Christianity to come at you full bore in the lyrics and sounds within this album. It is relatively close aesthetically and in dimension to Nikki Sixx’s side project, Sixx A.M.’s Heroin Diaries. The song titles paint a good picture of what you are about to hear: “Rebel”, “Save Me From Myself”, “Die Religion Die” and “Washed By Blood”. This is not something you want to listen to if you’re looking to

just let loose and have a good time. It is angry, provoking, deep, and heavy. Solid production, nice booklet, and even though it carries a deep lyrical experience, it will not be confused with Dylan, Townshend or Bono in terms of quality. But it is a decent overall effort, one that will probably please most any Korn fan musically because it doesn’t stray too far from the formula of what made them successful. Rockzone Records 1721 E.
