Debbie Reynolds Appeals for Your Help

as Honorary Chairperson of the OneHeart Umbrella Challenge.

Emma and Taylor Bailey are two beautiful little girls who were born as conjoined twins. They share one heart. They are in urgent need of medical attention. Their heart is failing. Ours won’t.

For more information, please visit the website at www. OneHeartUmbrellaCampaign.org, or call event director Gary Kimble at (480) 3256700 x 113.

The OneHeart Umbrella Campaign is a fundraising effort launched by the Broadway Palm Theater in Mesa, to help Emma and Taylor, and other families sharing their medical, financial, and emotional challenges.

Thank you.

When I heard the Broadway Palm Theatre, just 20 miles from the twins’ home, has dedicated their current production of Singin in the Rain to this effort, I was delighted to offer my support

Last week we touched on how to clean out many items on your computer for ‘Spring Cleaning’, and this week we get to do the dirtier job of cleaning the inside of the computer. What?! You didn’t know you were supposed to clean your pc, did you? The years of Arizona dust, pet hair, human skin, and other nasties can reduce the ability for your computer to cool properly, and can also muck up any moving parts such as the fans. Follow this quick guide and your computer will be ready for another year of happy computing.

What you need to get started: Can of Compressed Air, LCD Cleaning Solution, soft lint free cloth, screwdriver. Cans of compressed air can be found at Fry’s Electronics or Radio Shack for about $9 for three. Get three and while you’re there pick up a bottle of LCD cleaning agent; a sales person should be able to help you find them. If you have an older CRT (Glass) monitor, just use your favorite glass cleaner such as Windex. However, if you have a LCD screen like most of the population these days, you should spray the screen first with compressed air to remove any particles that could scratch the screen, then spray the LCD Cleaner on your screen and wipe clean with a soft lint free cloth.

Next, unplug the desktop box and take it outside. Remove the two screws to take the side panel off and then use the can of compressed air to blow all the dust out of the case. Pay special attention to the metal fins. Under those fins is your CPU that can get really hot, so make sure all the dust is blown out of that area. The fans usually collect a lot of dust too, so make sure you give them a good spray and try to keep the compressed air can upright so that you do not get any moisture blowing out of the can. The thing with all the wires running to it is the power supply, and it collects a lot of dust, too. Just give it a good spray on both sides where you see the vents to blow the dust out. For Laptops, I would just recommend

spraying the compressed air into the open vents and blow out all the dust. I don’t recommend taking these apart unless you are a trained technician. You can always take it to a local shop and have them do a cleaning for you. If you have pets, hair can easily get clogged in your laptop fans and cause your laptop to overheat. Once you have your PC back in the house and hooked up to power, give the outside of the case a nice cleaning with a damp cloth. Open up the DVD/ CD drives and blow any dust out of them using the can of compressed air. Also, use the can of compressed air on your Laptop/Desktop keyboard to blow out any crumbs or dust. You should be good to go and feel much cleaner about your computing experience.

Saturn Sky & Pontiac Solstice Review and photos by Chad Haire

About four years ago, General Motors introduced the Saturn Sky and Pontiac Solstice. Underneath, they share the same mechanical parts, differing only in body style and interior bits. We got four examples to test. The base engine is a 4-cylinder rated at 177 horsepower. It offers adequate acceleration, but you need to wind it up for any power. The other two cars had turbo-charged motors, cranking out a healthy 265 horsepower. Wow, what a

difference! I hit 0-60 mph in less than 6 seconds. Gas mileage for all engines was 22-31mph overall. The turbo pack includes stiffer suspension and bigger tires, which resulted in excellent handling on the tight mountain roads north of Scottsdale, though it also resulted in a choppy ride on rough streets. Some car writers have complained about the manuallyoperated convertible top. I don’t see why. An electric top would add weight and cost. The price of about $22,000

for the base car, or $30,000 for a loaded turbo, is reasonable as it is.

RPM’S LIGHT RAIL PUB CRAWL… ENCORE!

Presented by Responsible Partying Made Simple Same shirt, a second serving of fun… At the request of the patrons, on Saturday, April 11th, from 4 – 11 pm, RPM’S is bringing back the Light Rail Pub Crawl! RPM’S, the membership luxury transportation service designed to decrease DUI’s, is putting on another pub crawl to spread awareness for alternative transportation and to show the need for a light rail that runs later. Metro-Phoenix residents will experience a variety of nightlife flavors. Stretching from Phoenix’s Camelback/Central light rail station to Tempe’s Apache/McClintock station, they will enjoy local nightlife diversity ranging from the stylish, laid back, Switch Restaurant & Wine Bar to the “Cheers-like” atmosphere of the ROC Bar. “The event was such a huge success in February,” said organizer of the event, Merlin U. Ward, “everyone wanted to do it again! Bar owners and patrons alike. It’s a great give-back to the Phoenix businesses and really shows the number of patrons who would like to see the Light Rail run later.” Around the metropolitan area, 11 nightlife locations will offer extended happy hours and exclusive drink specials during the event to patrons wearing the official RPM’S pub crawl T-shirt (their ‘ticket’). Anyone who has a shirt from the last event is invited out to participate again! There is no fixed schedule; all patrons are able to customize which locations they want to visit based on their own likes and tastes. RPM’S encourages patrons to try all the different flavors of AZ Nightlife. In addition, events and contests will be taking place during the crawl. Switch will be hold a wine tasting from 4-6 pm, as well ASA live filming of RPMStv and giveaways of a 1 year Membership for RPMS service at a variety of locations (patrons can sign up for contests at shirt purchasing locations and must be present to win).

The Night Owl If you have an entertainment event or item to include in “The Night Owl” send to brent.diggins@azweeklymagazine.com “The Night Owl” will cover restaurants, clubs, bars, celebrities, music and other miscellaneous events.

BY BRENT DIGGINS AND EFIA MOORE

So do you Tweet? If you do, are you following us @ bdiggs and @mindspazzer? You’ll even get to see little pictures of us. If you don’t, uhm, put down the phone book, the video cassettes and your CDs and get with it! We’ve got a lot going on this week including our review of a hotel, a great Easter Brunch a major concert review and more. For all that happened, is happening and will happen in the Valley, read on. Easter at Ritz-Carlton: If you are going to have brunch one day out of the year, there is no better day than on Easter! I mean you don’t even have to be religious; it’s just that the offerings and brunch specials on Easter Sunday are unbeatable. Since we have a LOT of beautiful hotels with great restaurants, take a peek into what they are offering. The Ritz-Carlton Phoenix, for example, is hosting their popular Easter brunch from 10:00am to 2:00pm. It’ll feature a tremendous variety of options including charcuterie, artisan cheeses, chilled smoked and roasted salmon, a live omelet station, freshly-carved prime rib au jus, honey-roasted smoked ham, eggs Benedict, seared halibut, honey-roasted chicken, and, most important, a giant choice of dessert pastries, cakes, mousse and an ice cream and toppings bar. Anyone want to take us? The brunch is $64 per adult and $32 for children aged 2-12. Kids that go also have access to the Easter egg hunt and a petting zoo. For more information or reservations, visit ritzcarlton.com or call (602) 468-0700. Billy Joel/Elton John: When two legends come to town, there is always a lot of chatter. The Night Owl was in attendance as Billy Joel and Elton John, two of the best song writers ever, brought their Face 2 Face tour to a packed U.S. Airways Arena. They did a handful of popular numbers like including “Your Song,” and “Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me.” From there, Elton John took over solo to perform some of his greatest hits and then Joel did the same. Then they both came out to end the show with about 10 songs together including covers of the Beatles’ “Happy Birthday” and “Back in the U.S.S.R.” The closing song was “Piano Man,” but it didn’t have the feel it does when played in a crowded bar. So what did I think of it? It was a typical “legend” show, they sang their hits and they had the crowd singing (how can’t you with those two?). There was nothing extraspecial or unordinary, basically just what you would expect from a tour that has gone around five times over. Of note was some pretty good lighting and they gave the crowd their money’s worth with nearly four hours of performance. Out of the two performers, I’d give Billy Joel the nod on this particular night as he didn’t seem to be walking through the motions as much as Elton was. aloft Hotel: “Aloha” was the greeting I received

when I called aloft Hotel in Tempe; the newest brand of Starwood Hotels. I was meeting a friend for drinks and was excited to finally check out the new “contemporary and modern” hotel. As expected it has the same hip feel as the W Hotel in Scottsdale, but in a more casual setting. It was busier than I expected for a weeknight. The first notable difference of aloft Hotel is the lobby. Only a lobby in name, it reminds me of a common room, or a brightly lit lounge. As promised the 24/7 “pantry” was open, and there was even a free pool table set up. Comfortable sitting areas abound, including some with laptop sized tabletops. Like the illustrations on the aloft Hotel’s Web site, people are sitting with their laptops working, and interacting. The techno music was loud, the graphic, moving wall art was bright, and the community-like pool area was in full view. I don’t know how anyone was getting work done, especially when the fabulous w xyz bar is in view from every angle. I won’t lie; w xyz bar is alluring. It’s framed with colorful back lighting that halos each bottles signature shape, and is topped with low-key televisions. The bar top is smartly accented with color changing pin-hole lights beneath the surface. Overall I was impressed with the atmosphere and my cocktail, and wouldn’t mind stopping in for another drink, but probably not a stay. aloft Hotel’s northeast Tempe location is a bit remote, not really within comfortable walking distance to Mill or the light rail, and the only places to “dine” are the In-n-Out and the small eateries located in the shopping center across the street. For the residents of the condos nearby I’m sure it’s a welcomed neighbor. More aloft Hotels are suppose to be coming to the area, one in Chandler, and two in Phoenix, in downtown and near the airport. Check out aloft Hotel’s amenities and happy hour at www.starwoodhotels.com/ alofthotels. Night Owl Notes: Want to take some cooking classes? Check out Arizona Culinary Institute; Final acts added to Tempe Music Festival: Vayden, Pop Evil, Tongue Dried Sun, Wensday, Telescope and Red Litter Drive; Anyone been to the wine bar Copa Habana?—Some fellow Night Owls wrote in with good things about it—thecopahabana. com; Forks and Corks is April 2nd—azhla.com; The Mesa Arts Center is kicking off two new exhibits including Sergei Isupov’s latest—mesaartscenter. com; Lake Powell Resorts & Marinas extends early bird special (30% off) to April 29th; The Killers show scheduled for April 16th has been cancelled, it’s rescheduled for September 28th at Dodge Theatre; Tweet about what you are doing and seeing @bdiggs and @mindspazzer. Be safe, be a good person. Till next time…

Martinis & Masterpieces Meet at Memorial Hall Phoenix- Raven Events is proud to sponsor ‘Martinis & Masterpieces’ on Friday, April 3rd, a post work cocktail party honoring the Arts & Business Council of Greater Phoenix and the Junior League of Phoenix. This celebration of their work in providing capacity building tools and programs, and answering the needs of the nonprofit arts and health and human services community, will be

held at Memorial Hall in Central Phoenix starting at 5:30pm. These two organizations’ ability to link and connect businesses to the arts through volunteer and educational opportunities is creating a more vibrant Phoenix. ‘Martinis & Masterpieces’ will expose the business and celebrity community’s artistic talent through their every day “doodles”. Doodles can be silly, sublime, and everything in between. Even presidents have been known to doodle. One thing is for sure; they can be highly informative and just plain entertaining. These masterpiece doodles (from business leaders, government officials, sports and

Hollywood celebrities, etc.) will be featured on-line leading up to the event, where they will be displayed and auctioned to the highest bidders. Guests will be treated to several of the Valley’s premiere restaurants’ masterpiece martinis, micro-brews, and wine. In addition, “heavy” hors d’oeuvres will be offered. Live entertainment will be provided by the Kyle Phelan band. All this is included in the $50 donation to attend the event ($25 of which is taxdeductable). All proceeds will benefit the Arts & Business Council of Greater Phoenix and the Junior League of Phoenix. Memorial Hall at Steele Indian School Park is located at 300 E. With a convincing 84-69 win over the #2 Texas A&M Aggies last Sunday, the ASU women’s hoop squad became the first #6 seed to advance to the regional finals since Stanford in ’04. Afterward, they faced their toughest challenge all year (actually any team’s toughest challenge all year) in a meeting with undefeated and overpowering UConn. The Lady Huskies took center court against the Lady Sun Devils having averaged over a 30-point margin of victory in their first three games of the ’09 Tournament.

Can Suns Make Playoffs? Probably Not

As of this writing, the Phoenix Suns are coming off a major win-streak and are 3 ½ games behind the Dallas Mavericks, who currently have the 8th Western Conference playoff spot which they should retain it if they don’t melt down with 7 games left to play in the regular season. The Suns can make up some direct ground with a win over the Mavs on Sunday, but at this point it will take more than a minor miracle for Steve Nash, the Big Shaq-tus, J-Rich and crew to advance.

Major League Baseball’s Commissioner Bud Selig has freed up the League’s security division to conduct a far-reaching, comprehensive investigation into kick-back scandals, falsified birth records, and smuggling of performance-enhancing drugs and cash after improprieties were revealed within the Chicago White Sox and Washington Nationals organizations regarding foreign prospects, most of who come from the Dominican Republic. Prospects’ immigration status and thus their legally participating in Major League Baseball are pending the outcome of the investigation.

vs. Up Close With SubmissionFighter Roland Sarria, Founder Of Rage In The Cage Written by Robert W. Young Courtesy of Rage In The Cage and Black Belt Magazine

What are some of the lessons you learned in your early days? In the beginning, it was real primitive—no doctors, no boxing commissions. Once the boxing commission got involved and began sanctioning events, the whole game changed. There were lots of bills and taxes and other expenses. Adjusting was tough. I had to get a full-time job for two years—as a telemarketer—to keep the dream alive. What came first: your schools or the events? I had the school for about two years. So you had martial artists to draw from for Rage in the Cage? Right. I also called a bunch of schools and put ads in the papers. It was challenging at the beginning, but it eventually became profitable. I no longer have to hold down an outside job. I also promote another event called Desert Quest. It’s a grappling tournament, mostly Brazilian jiu-jitsu. We have about eight shows a year. With the tournaments, the schools and the cage fights, I’m having a tremendous amount of success because I’m able to hold onto my fans. I’m thinking about doing seminars on how to be a promoter. It doesn’t matter what kind of martial arts— MMA, Brazilian jiu-jitsu, grappling—I can teach you how to do it with very little money. I was forced to learn how to stretch a penny until it’s like a dollar. How often do you hold a Rage in the Cage event? I’m averaging between 15 and 25 shows a year in Phoenix. This year, I did one in New Mexico for the fi rst time and drew more than 5,000 people.

How big does an event have to be for you to call it a success? We have three kinds of shows. Level C is pure amateur. Level B is amateur and pro. Level A is just pros. So it varies. Level C needs at least 500 people. Level B needs about 1,000. Level A needs at least 1,500. How big a city is needed to support a show like Rage in the Cage? You don’t need a large city. The key is finding local fighters who are popular and willing to work hard to bring in their friends and a crowd. If you rely on fighters from other cities and states, you’ll have problems unless they’ve had television exposure on events like the UFC. Does having even one UFC veteran on a card help? Absolutely. The publicity that follows the UFC and its fighters is tremendous, and it can play a big role in attendance. With everything you have going on, how do you still find time to train? I only train part time, but I still compete. I recently went to a North American Grappling Association [competition] to fight in the 40-and-over age group. They didn’t have anyone in it, so I had to enter the open division. I was pitted against some young kid—I don’t know who he was, but he was pretty good—and I was able to outfox him. I played the clock and used position and intimidation. At 45, I had to use all my resources to beat a kid at that level. Specifically, what are the resources an old guy needs to beat a young guy? First, the mind. Second, strategy. Third, knowing how to play the clock, which ties into strategy. Knowing how to get to a dominant position and making sure you’re ahead early on are also important. Conditioning plays a huge role, depending on how long the match is. If it’s five minutes, you’ve got to jump in quick. You’ve got to get out front and get ahead on points, then your opponent is the clock. That’s why it’s called a tournament. What are some of the strategies you use against younger opponents? I like to let my opponent wear himself out before I go for the finish. In the old days, I would attack a lot because I had a lot of gas in my tank. Now, I have a quarter of a tank. Knowing that, I like to counter. I let that particular guy make his move. I could tell that he had a wrestling background and that he’d shoot in, so I let him do it to a certain degree. I’d stop him occasionally to keep him honest. After four or five attempts, I knew his pattern

well. So I used a takedown that works every time against a wrestler. At the Grappler’s Quest three years ago, I used the same move to win. BJJ guys, however, often don’t like to shoot. They like to sit on their butts or backs. In that case, I would stand there and make him come to me. In most of my matches, I wound up in my opponent’s guard. It’s important for every fighter to be comfortable there even though it’s not a safe place to be because the guard is the trademark of the BJJ fighter. These days, I won’t go into my opponent’s guard. The reason is the legs are stronger than the upper body. So while you’re in his guard, there’s a lot of pulling and resting for him. Against a BJJ guy, I’ll make him stay with me up top. I’ll wear him down aerobically. If he flops to his back, I’ll just stand up. I’ll wear him down because I know he doesn’t have the functional muscles needed to maintain an upright exertion like a wrestler can. I wish I had known that years ago. How do you handle the striking component of MMA fighting? I’ve never done an MMA event; I do submission grappling and gi fighting. It’s an interesting question, though, because I think I was born to be a cage fighter. I was fortunate to have trained with high-level guys in boxing and muay Thai, as well as with Rickson. But I had to make a decision: Either stay in the entertainment business, where you have to look a certain way, or go into a field where your face is going to change. I decided not to take that route.

RAGE! SECTION

Continued from last week...

What role does stamina play in submission fighting? You’ve got to have it, but the real key is breathing. You have to stay relaxed to breathe. You have to know when to commit and when not to. It’s like shooting. When you’re 20, maybe you have seven bullets. When you’re 30, you may have only five. When you’re in your 40s like I am, you may have only three. With three, you have to make sure they count.

Specifically, what exercises do you do to build endurance and stamina? Running? Bag work? Some people like to run or use the StairMaster, but I don’t. I get my conditioning from grappling, boxing, kickboxing and plyometrics. I try to train exactly how I’m going to compete. I’ve created some strange workouts—including one called “the gorilla” and one called “the cave man.” For example, I lie on my back and get a large heavy bag—about 150 pounds—to hold in my guard with my arms and legs. From there, I practice getting up to a standing position. It helps develop the core muscles— the stomach, legs and trunk. That will really help you get an opponent off you in a match.

Is the best way to stay relaxed to gain as much fight experience as you can? Improving is a mixture of experience in competition and age, which means you’ve trained so much that it starts to come naturally. But you can be totally relaxed in practice and lose it all in a match. You have to be able to deal with the pressure of performing in front of people. I do better in my 40s than I did in my 30s because of my breathing. Sometimes in the past, I was defeated before I even went out there because of my breathing.

Did you develop those exercises or pick them up from an instructor? Some came from instructors, and some I created. Being a football player, I disagreed with some of the training methods of BJJ— such as being soft and gentle while lying on your back. A lot of the MMA guys with a wrestling background think the same way; they do a lot of aerobic and anaerobic conditioning. Wrestlers, however, can be too aggressive. You have to find a happy medium. ... Continued Next Week.

Whether we call her “the diva” or “the glamazon”, this is the girl who literally wears her confidence on her sleeve and doesn’t mind getting attention from every man in the room. These women can easily relate to the feminine fashion icon, Beyoncé Knowles. From the red carpet to the exclusive nightly Hollywood parties, Beyoncé features fabulous ensembles for her fans to gawk over. You will rarely find the R&B queen in jeans and a tank top because she is almost always dressed in lavish designer gowns that perfectly fit her hourglass shape. She doesn’t mind taking an opportunity to test out new styles when it comes to fashion, though, and she infrequently misses the “Best Dressed” lists for the major red carpet events. Webster defines it as inflammation, or excesses, tendencies or obsessions. In the music world, however, -Itis is a 4 piece band from Colorado Spring, Colorado that spreads their love of music everywhere they go. When they’re in Phoenix, they only play at Joe’s Grotto. Craig Soderberg (guitars, keyboards, backing vocals), Michael Glaser (bass guitar, backing vocals), Jameson Becker (drums) and Mark Alan Rodio (lead vocals) make up this talented and entertaining pop-rock band. They will be at Joe’s Grotto Wednesday April 1st through Friday April 3rd.
