SPRING FLING Written by Jared Young, 2012-2013 Spring Fling Executive Director

the community into the University and vice-versa.

I’m asked quite frequently what Spring Fling actually does. Some people reference the rides. Others think of the original food dishes. Others boast that it’s the largest student-run carnival in the nation. The last group says that we’re one of the largest fundraisers for University of Arizona clubs and organizations. All of the above are correct. However, I’d like to change how people think about the event. I want Tucson to see Spring Fling as a University of Arizona event that further integrates

My name is Jared Young, and I am this year’s Spring Fling Executive Director. I’m a Tucson-native who grew up attending Spring Fling. All I ever saw was the rides, as most children do. It wasn’t until I got to college that I got to see behind the scenes and truly see what it takes to put on Spring Fling every year. Eight student directors, lead by myself, work on nonoverlapping areas of the event. From Field Operations to Business to Corporate to Media, my team members are crafting the most-

comprehensive plans and operations for their areas. There is high turnover year to year (as in most student organizations), but we have developed a system to maintain the consistency and integrity of the University tradition. After 39 years, we’re still that carnival that puts the fun in fundraiser for all of Tucson, Arizona. One of the areas that I oversee is our community relation’s branch housed under the Programming Director. This name is a bit of a misnomer though. The branch should be called the community involvement branch, because the

offer a promotion for $5 off an unlimited ride wristband if the guest brings 4 canned food items on Friday, April 13th. Last year, over 3,000 cans of food were donated to the Community Food Bank of Southern Arizona. This year, donations will be benefitting the Arizona Children’s Nutrition and the Emergency Food Assistance Programs. We also offer free admission on Sunday, April 14th if guests donate two gently used children’s books. Last year, 496 books were donated to the Reading Seed,

a local youth literacy advocacy group. Hunger and illiteracy are still important and unfortunate issues in the Tucson community, and Spring Fling wants to get even more involved. I’ve given only a glimpse of some of the involved parties with Spring Fling. If you can take away two main ideas please let them be that 1) We’re much more than a carnival and 2) There’s something here for everyone!

TUCSON COVER STORY

Programming Director works all year to figure out ways to integrate the Tucson community into Spring Fling. We have several initiatives currently in place that exemplify this goal. First, community schools (K-12) can paint letters that are prominently displayed at our main entrance. Each letter in Spring Fling is cut from plywood and decorated by a participating

school. The look on a child’s face when he or she sees his or her work lit up is priceless. In addition, the Programming Director heads up our Kid’s Korner. Initially, this space consisted of just some coloring pages with crayons. The space has grown to include arts and crafts along with face painting. We’re also happy to announce that for this year, the University of Arizona bookstore will be at Kid’s Korner with Dr. Seuss’s the Lorax. The Lorax will be doing a story time along with recyclable arts and crafts on Saturday, April 13th. Assisting the Lorax will be a local children’s blog writer in Tucson, Kindle Rising. Adding to the excitement, the Children’s Museum Tucson will be conducting engaging activities on Sunday, April 14th. We’re excited to see if these partnerships can continue to grow and provide a place for families to come and support the University when the rides may be too thrilling for the little ones. Our community involvement isn’t one-sided. We host two donation drives for instrumental non-profits within the Tucson community. We

REVIEWERS ROUNDTABLE The following are reactions from each of AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s film commentators in an effort to generate a well-rounded overview of this weekend’s new releases.

SOUNDBITE SPOTLIGHT The following quotes were pulled from interviews conducted by AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s film columnists with talent speaking on behalf of movies recently released in theaters.

Actor Cody Longo (‘Not Today’) By Joseph J. Airdo

‘No’

‘Not Today’

Gael Garcia Bernal plays a brash young advertising executive who spearheads the campaign against Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet’s 1988 re-election efforts. Playing exclusively at The Loft Cinema. (R - 110 minutes)

Cody Longo plays a young man who, haunted by the images of a starving man and his daughter he refused to help while traveling through India with his friends, attempts to right his wrong only to discover that the man has been forced to sell the little girl. (PG-13 - 118 minutes)

Stan: Always intriguing as historical events are visited on screen from a behind-thescenes perspective, director Pablo Larrain captures the fervor and zeal in almost a documentary style, of the analytical and constantly adjusting efforts of any marketing campaign as the intention of swaying the sentiments of voters toward a particular candidate, whether locally or in a foreign country. With English subtitles, nothing is lost in the translation as the crucial yes or ‘No’ objective is laid bare before the viewer. And yes, from history we know the outcome of the campaign, what a thrill to learn the details of the journey of the ‘No’ campaign. (Grade: B)

April 10th, 2013 - April 16th, 2013

“This film changed my life. We shot this 2 and a half years ago. It meant the world to me to be able to travel to India and shoot this film with such incredible people. It completely changed my perspective on life. It humbled me. It brought me back down to earth. It showed me that I shouldn’t just be living just for myself. I should be living for others. All of that and I was shooting a movie at the same time. “It was crazy. It wasn’t organized at all. I mean, we did what we could and we really

fought to shoot a film down there. But, at times, we were flying by the seat of our pants because of just the random stuff that happened to us. Locations all the sudden got seized on us and we had to shoot on live streets. The director Jon Van Dyke did an amazing job coping with these things. He was set on not building any sets so we shot in these slums. “This was real. We had to get security to tag along with us and tell people, ‘You can walk by but just don’t look into the camera.’ It was nuts to shoot

GRADES AT A GLANCE

Joseph: “Not Today” operates with a substantial sense of urgency, instantly breaking your heart and moving you to take a stand and do something to stop the slavery that sadly still exists in developing countries. And although writer/ director Jon Van Dyke uses over-stylization to gloss over plot points that are more complicated and could have provided more dramatic depth had he faced them head-on, his proposal to truly take action as opposed to merely praying about problems is a refreshing real-world approach for faith-based feature films. Creative subtitle delivery and star Cody Longo’s passionate performance elevate an already efficacious entertainment experience. (Grade: B) AZWeeklyMagazine.com

By Joseph J. Airdo “I grew up watching ‘Airplane!,’ ‘The Naked Gun’ and ‘Top Secret.’ I remember watching those movies over and over as a child. Honestly, David Zucker molded my sense of humor. So when it came time to work with him, I really just kind of understood what he wanted, how his movies worked and the style of acting that it took.

the way that we did but I think that it brought so much truth to the film. It was so busy everywhere. We shot in Mumbai and were stuck in traffic for 7 hours. We shot in Hyderabad and there were not a lot of paved roads. It was just crazy to see the culture.

“But it is interesting how much work goes into getting a laugh. It looks like it is all fun and everything but there is a lot of pressure and stress that goes into making sure you say your lines the right way because we are in the business of getting laughs. That is what this movie is all about. If you are not getting laughs, then you are not doing your job.

“I met so many incredible people. You can’t talk to a person down there without them bringing up their faith within 5 minutes of the conversation which I thought was just incredible. They live their lives knowing that there is a higher being. Sometimes they are not Christians but they are living not for just themselves. Their culture is incredible. And they are so caring and giving. It was such an awesome experience.” – Cody Longo

“Basically, [my character] is just a really good guy who is kind of thrown in the middle of all this crazy ‘Paranormal Activity’ stuff going on with Ashley Tisdale’s character. He is sort of the guy who grounds everything

(Grade: B)

MOVIE TWEETS! Still haven’t seen that movie that your friends have been talking about? Film Columnist Randy Montgomery recaps what you may have missed in 140 characters or less. ‘Evil Dead (2013) A bloody good time, literally. A perfect follow-up to the classic that may actually surpass its predecessor as an all-time favorite. Grade: A-

The Croods A heartfelt animated flick for the kids that made me feel warm and fuzzy at the end, but didn’t keep my attention throughout. Grade: B-

G.I. Joe: Retaliation Far-fetched & poorly acted. Why can’t Hasbro make a good film based on our favorite toys? How does The Rock get his arms so big? Grade: C-

FILM! SECTION

Actor Simon Rex (‘Scary Movie V’)

The Host One should not compare this film to its author’s vampire/werewolf series, but after a viewing one wishes they were back in twilight mode (as scary as that sounds). Grade: C Jurassic Park 3D Cashing in once again on a popular film from decades past. Fans will enjoy the 3D, while younger generations may see it on the big screen for the first time. Grade: B+ Olympus Has Fallen Really? Is there a moment of this film that’s remotely plausible? No, but it was entertaining. Think “Die Hard” in the White House. Grade C-

while all of this madness is going on. My character is a scientist - a monkey trainer who works in a laboratory like in ‘Rise of the Planet of the Apes.’ “There is a funny scene where I am walking through the laboratory with Terry Crews. I am showing him all of the research that I have done with the monkeys and I just start putting my foot in my mouth. I literally say the worst thing you could possibly say and then something even worse things start spiraling out of control until the point where even the monkey is waving his hand telling me to shut up. I play an idiot. My character is basically a nice moron. I don’t want to give it away but I am basically the biggest moron in the world.” – Simon Rex
