Somebody/Nobody Spoofs Absurdity of Celebrity By Nicholas Connell
Arizona Theatre Company’s world premiere comedy, Somebody/Nobody by Jane Martin opened last weekend, and the absurdity of a celebrity-obsessed culture was in full view; screwballs and all! This bizarre and funny look at the star maker machinery of Hollywood is right out of the ‘Cuckoo’s Nest’- and the opening night audience loved it! The fairytale fun opens with a character seemingly straight out of The Andy Griffith Show, Loli, played innocently and naively by Jessica Martin. She hails from Flatt, Kansas, has no cleavage, and is lost in the land of “fallen angels”. She just needs her dream to show up, which of course does in the form of movie star Sheena Keener, played grandly by Alexandra Tavares. Alexandra is the center of our attention, much like the Paris Hilton/ Brittany Spears media fodder in these days of celebrity idols. This wild ride with Sheena is full of bugs, daggers, duct tape, vampires, goddesses, sex, sleep, guns, agents, and the usual bipolar obsessions thrown in for laughs. She’s not just your ordinary cinematic whore/victim; she can sleep with shamans too!
But Loli is just getting her feet wet in the Botox/ plastic surgery landscape of La La land, which is so Scottsdale it’s scary. This is her chance to help the celebrity in Sheena “see the light”, which comes in the form of her red state cousin, Jo Don, played like a true caveman by Jeremy Stiles Holm. Jeremy brings the earth and thunder to Loli’s world and rocks our little celebrity Sheena back to her senses. In between, there’s the usual fan obsessed Stalker, played by the vampish Claire Buchignani, who brings a fresh look to an age old problem. She eventually gets run off by the totally Hollywood Hills agent Galaxy, played perfectly by the talented Elizabeth Gilbert. Eventually, all is well that ends well in this roller coaster comedy, as Loli finds fame, Sheena gets her man, and Galaxy’s true identity is revealed for Monday night’s dirty laundry on Channel 3. Somebody/ Nobody is a razor sharp look at celebrity, fame, the culture of idols, and is full of good laughs. No wonder John Cusack wrote “Celebrity is death, celebrity, that’s the worst thing that can happen to an actor.” Now put on your sunglasses and let’s party like rock stars! Dodging Bullets Presented by ASU Herberger College of the Arts Lyceum Theatre April 10-11 & 17-18 Friday & Saturday 7:30pm David Barker is a theatre professor in the ASU Herberger College School of Theatre and Film. On April 10–11 and 17–18 he performs Dodging Bullets, a moving meditation on life and death. Barker wrote the solo show following the events of the summer of 2004. While on sabbatical, his intention was to develop a new solo show; a personal, soul-searching exploration marking the milestone of turning 50. Nothing happened until July 6, at 12:15 p.m. in an upscale Boston suburb, when Barker’s then brother-in-law – a successful brain surgeon – tried to kill Barker and his sister as Barker’s 16 year-old niece watched. Barker retells these horrific events in Dodging Bullets, a story that also explores the declining health of his parents. Ben Tyler directs.

Setting Down in a HOT LZ Miss Saigon Comes to Arizona Broadway Theatre
Peoria- The Vietnam War is the setting for Miss Saigon, the upcoming musical at the Arizona Broadway Theatre scheduled to run from April 17th through May 24th. This classic love story, based on the Puccini opera Madame Butterfly, is brought up-to-date with music and lyrics by Alan Boubil and ClaudeMichael Schönberg (the creators of Les Misérables), with an English translation by Richard Maltby, Jr. It is a story of an American soldier and a Vietnamese girl who fall in love, only to be separated during the fall of Saigon. Their struggles to find each other over the ensuing years end in tragedy for her and a fighting chance for the child he never knew he had. Miss Saigon is an epic, daring pop opera that gives a multi-ethnic cast of strong singers an opportunity to shine in show-stopping numbers like “I Still Believe,” “Why God Why?” and “The American Dream.” “Cassandra Klaphake (ABT’s Casting Director and Artistic Producer) has assembled a cast almost entirely new to the Phoenix area,” commented Joseph Martinez, the show’s director. Because it is such a specific cast, Klaphake and Artistic Associate Kurtis W. Overby auditioned over 300 actors last December in New York City. “We needed to find an actress with just the right amount of youthful innocence and fiery spirit for the role of Kim,” Overby stated. “I’m guessing almost a third of the girls we saw at this audition wanted to play Kim.” The one to win the part was New York-based actress EJ Zimmerman, who makes her debut at the ABT. Zimmerman was most recently seen in the National Tour of Avenue Q (Christmas Eve u/s). Returning to the ABT stage as the April 9th - April 15th, 2009

Q & A with Miss Saigon Director Joe Martinez AZ Weekly: The first thing we want to ask is what everyone talks about with Miss Saigon; the helicopter: will there be one? Joe Martinez: That does seem to be everyone’s first question. Last year, when we announced that we were doing Miss Saigon, it was the first thing people asked. Let me begin by saying that Miss Saigon is an amazing story. But like many of the huge Broadway shows of the 1980s, it became synonymous with “spectacle”: no one remembered the storyline or the amazing music. It has been interesting to see how companies around the country are producing these mammoth shows once they leave Broadway, since audiences have come to expect certain things. No one thought that

Les Misérables could be done without the turntable and barricade. Many companies have succeeded in making these shows work on a smaller scale, and the audiences have actually reacted differently to these shows because they are able to focus on the other elements, such as the story and the music. So, to answer your question, I can say that in the ABT production of Miss Saigon, the audience will know that they are in the presence of a helicopter during the performance. I’m not going to say how. You’ll just have to come and see how we make it happen! AZW: So, with the challenges that these musicals provide, why do you think so many companies decide to do them? JM: I can’t speak for other theatre companies, but I can tell you why ABT does them. The majority of our audience is composed of baby boomers on up, and they are familiar with the popular standard musicals: Guys and Dolls, South Pacific, to name a couple. However, we also want to introduce our audiences to other quality works, and so we integrate these shows into our schedule. Every season, we do at least one show that might be familiar to people only by name. They may have heard of it, but have never seen it or know anything about it. In the past, ABT has produced an amazing assortment of titles in an educational sense. Jekyll and Hyde comes to mind right away as a 90’s pop musical that many have heard of but have never experienced. In our second season, we did a
production of La Cage aux Folles that people still talk about today when they come to the theatre. We hope that audience members’ positive response to these shows gives us the opportunity to produce more shows like Miss Saigon or next season’s Phantom. AZW: As the director for this production, how much influence do you have in the casting of the show, and are you excited about the cast you have for this production?
ARTS! SECTION
JM: Yeah, this is an exciting cast to be working with. It reminds me of the first show we did at ABT (Anything Goes) in that everyone in the cast was new to us. With Miss Saigon, if I remember correctly, there are only two local actors in this production—
hundreds of people over a three-day period. Cassandra is in charge of casting for ABT. Since she and I have worked together and known each other for so long, we are always on the same page when it comes to the needs of filling these roles. And as a performer, Cass really understands the voice and the demands required of eight performances a week. She really knows what to listen for to make sure they have the stamina to do all the performances over the run of a show. AZW: What can we expect to see at this performance that we didn’t see when this production toured to the Gammage Theatre? JM: Well, I don’t know what the tour

AZW: Tell us a little about putting together a show like Miss Saigon. JM: Well, it all starts about a year before the actors arrive. Once the

shows are picked and the director has been hired, meetings are set up to get everyone thinking about the look and feel of the show. At this time, the director and the designers (set, lighting, costume, props and sound) do their research and present their ideas for the producers. These meetings last until the opening of the production. At each meeting, new or modified ideas are presented. They’re fun to be in, but sometimes can get a little tense, because everyone has the right answers! But it always comes down to what is best for the production and our audiences. Casting is done throughout the year and they (the cast) arrive in Arizona two and a half weeks before the show opens. Rehearsals are an intense process as well. Since this show is all music, a majority of rehearsal time over the first few days is just music. We rehearse eight hours a day, six days a week. It’s an exciting process that has a great pay off with opening night and for the entire run. I always liken it to a sports team; we work hard as a team with one common goal. By Stan Robinson From the moment that Chris LaMont (President and Co-Founder) and Jason Carney (Festival Director) delivered their opening, heartfelt thank you for support, the attendees of the 9th Annual Phoenix Film Festival were treated to a unique, outstanding experience. The festival staff and over 200 volunteers had a system in place that virtually took care of every need. The bustling activity reminded me of movie sets; I’m betting this stems from the fact that both Chris and Jason are filmmakers. By Stan Robinson This fourth installment takes us back to the streets where it all began, with Vin Diesel and Paul Walker rejoining Michelle Rodriguez and Jordana Brewster. A crime involving “someone” who is close to both FBI agent Brian O’Conner (Walker) and fugitive ex-con Dom Toretto (Diesel) brings the two, who were once friends, back to L.A. They are forced to form an uneasy alliance as they both want to take down the local drug kingpin for different reasons. The chase is on, from convoy heists to precision underground tunnel chases across international lines, as they try to find the best way to get revenge and push the limits of what’s possible behind the wheel of fast cars. The Maricopa County Fair has teamed up with Pink 365 to launch the first annual Health and Wellness Festival, a festival in the middle of a fair, aimed at families lacking healthcare insurance. Mammograms, children’s immunizations, and blood pressure checks are just some of the services that Pink 365 will host. Over 30 organizations will be present to offer information and resources for families in need of health and wellness services. Breaking Up Walls A Unity Art Project has become a part of the fair with a special Breaking Up Walls exhibit division. Art projects created by participants of the program will be on display during the fair. On Wednesday there will be a reception to raise funds for Breaking up walls. Youth all over the county have been hard at work for months on their animal projects. The fair is the culmination of their efforts. First ever Honoree, Fritzi Collins to receive Hall of Fame Award Saturday, April 18 Phoenix (March 31, 2009) – Most people measure Hall of Fame status in dedication, effort and accomplishments. The Maricopa County Fair is no different. Each year, hundreds of folks come together to support the Fair and its traditions. Most of these people work long hours and fulfill job responsibilities that include everything from cleaning up after animals (and people,) to balancing the books to working with the public. Most of these people do it for little or no money or recognition. Most of these people do it for the kids. Fritzi Collins has been doing it for the kids since the mid-1970’s, returning to the Maricopa County Fair each year. Currently the assistant superintendent of the sheep department, she works with children who enter their animals in the Fair, teaching them about responsibility, pride, and dedication. Children bring the sheep they’ve raised and trained to be judged and often, sold at the Fair. Collins describes their experience as a “24 hour-a-day job where they learn reading, writing, and arithmetic.” By the time they reach Collins and the Fair, they’ve spent months learning how to feed and care for their animals, and how to budget and balance their costs. At the Fair, they demonstrate their accomplishments and develop leadership and public speaking skills by answering questions by the public and judges. “They not only train the animal, they train themselves,” states Collins. After working with so many children year after year, Collins relishes watching them mature and return with their families. “I see children who are real handfuls and really don’t want to mind, and all of a sudden they’re grown up and they’re responsible,” she says. While many may describe Collins as tough but fair, she prefers to focus on her reliability in being there for the kids. Whether it’s a “sassy” or a shy child, Collins is there to help them get the most out of their Fair experience.
Her influence in their lives is farreaching, as many kids she’s worked with in the past bring their children to her so that they can learn the same lessons. She estimates she’s been to more than 60 weddings over the past thirty years of kids she’s worked with through the Maricopa County Fair and other youth programs for which she volunteers. The inaugural Hall of Fame Award was created to honor people who go above and beyond the call of duty. “The award honors those who give so much of themselves, their time, wisdom and effort to the Maricopa County Fair, its youth and its programs,” explains Executive Director Karen Searle. Collins was selected to be the first ever recipient due to her longtime commitment to the Fair and the fact that “she embodies the Fair’s mission of inspiring leadership and education in our youth,” adds Executive Director Michael Searle. Collin prefers, however, to share the spotlight with the other Fair volunteers. “There are a whole of a lot of people who are generous with their time to put that Fair on,” she states. True, perhaps, but because of her example and dedication to children, she will be the first to receive the honor at Noon on Saturday, April 18 at the fairgrounds. The event will also announce the 2009 recipient of the “Super Superintendent” award which honors exceptional service and commitment during the current Fair. The Extremely Ag-Citing County Fair offers fantastic family fun and entertainment at an amazing value. It’s refreshing to find a restaurant that was created from head-to-toe as a way to introduce the spirit of a culture to the customer. For this reason, The Dhaba Café in Tempe is without a doubt one of the best India food restaurants in the Valley. Providing guests with food and an ambiance that directly concentrates on bringing a particular region of Northern India (Punjab) to life, The Dhaba Café is a must dine for Indian foodies. Owner Raveen Arora, Manager Tony Felsianes, and Executive Chef Talwinder Dhaliwal have combined to offer superb food and service at stop 26 on the Metro Light Rail off of Apache Blvd in Tempe. They have stayed true to their accommodating cultural vision by providing fine dining Punjabi cuisine that is accessible to the everyday person at no more than $15 per menu item. Punjabi food is a melting pot of cuisines from Afghanistan, Persia, and parts of Asia. In India and Pakistan, highways are filled with roadside restaurants called Dhabas’. These eateries are popular stops for truck drivers and local people. Dhabas’ are traditionally filled with cots (chaarpal in Hindi), and were the inspiration for the name of the restaurant. Arora and crew named the restaurant after these truck stops in hopes that guests would be able to feel casual while eating fine food.

Every item in the Thali or “whole meal experience” is like a work of art. When you order a Thali meal, you can pick what you want as your courses or leave the meal in the hands of the trusted chefs. Everyone eating at the restaurant gets complimentary crispy lentil wafers or papadum, served with three different sauces that start off the robust flavors you will continue to experience throughout your meal. The house salad is was filled with fresh mango, red peppers, cantaloupe, cucumbers, and topped with delicious mango vinaigrette. Main courses are like those typically found in fine dining restaurants in Northern India. The Dhaba lamb curry is filled with perfectly tender meat blended with spices, a cauliflower and a potato spiced ‘dish of the day’, or allogobhi in Hindi. The numberdar saag chicken is perfectly spiced and blended with spinach. All the tastes are accompanied by a spiced up balsmati rice that mixes well with all the other flavors. The menu items cooked in the tandoor ovens are a way for someone to truly capture the specific taste and specialty of the Punjabi region. The chicken cooked in the tandoor is delicious, but has slightly milder flavors than the rest of the meal. Traditional Indian food is usually served with naan or bread, which can be used to soak up curry or accompany your meal. The garlic naan is perfectly cooked and flavored with a good amount of garlic that beautifully balances the contrast of the bread’s flavor. Going to eat at the Dhaba Cafe and not getting desert would be letting yourself down. Unlike other Indian deserts, which can be a little to unique for some pallets, the desserts here are as delightfully pleasing on the eye as they are in your mouth, and Tony makes a new specialty, aftermeal delicacy every day. Overall, the restaurant is a must taste. Hop on the light-rail or simply drive to the slightly hidden Dhaba Café for a culinary experience outside of a typical Indian buffet. While you’re there, check out The India Plaza Grocery Store that attaches to it. Here you can find spices and specialty items you can’t find at many places in The Valley. The base Corvette is a nice car, and its 430 horsepower engine provides great acceleration and fuel economy. But for those who want more, the upgraded Z-06 fits the bill. This option has a large 7.0 liter V-8 cranking out a hefty 505 horsepower. I did not try the listed top speed of 190 mph, but I did blast to 60 mph
in only 3.7 seconds! I got 27 mpg at 65 mph cruising too! The price isn’t cheap at $75,000. For those who need even more, the new ZR-1 is coming soon. With a supercharged V-8 creating 638 horsepower, this is the fastest Chevy ever. The most expensive too, at $103,000. I’m still waiting
to get one, but the Z-06 is enough machine for me.

Beginning in high school, I played lead guitar with a number of local bands, including The Tragic and Extremes of Violet. I moved into DJ work when a friend asked me to throw a play list, and I had all of the music for it. That job spawned several others, and I’m still at it today.

What’s the funniest thing that ever happened while performing? There are a number of things, most of which we can’t put in print. What’s the biggest misconception people have about DJs? I’m not sure, ask your girlfriend. What will people hear when they listen to your music? I play an eclectic mix of indieelectro, downtempo mixed with my personal favorites. I’d say that I’m all over the board, depending upon the venue. If there were a “Golden Rule” for being a DJ, what would it be? Do not kill the dance floor!!! Keep in tune with your audience. Your favorite place to play? I just enjoy playing music anywhere, anytime. From club gigs, to late-night downtown shindigs to rooftop sunset serenades… I love my job.

BY BRENT DIGGINS AND EFIA MOORE Last weekend was the “weekend of music.” All over the Valley and state, music took center stage and a number of great performances took place from large festivals to intimate productions. The Night Owls hit a few of them so keep reading to hear our take on the music, and to find out what else happened, is happening and will happen in the Valley of the Sun. Tempe Music Festival: I was expecting big things from this year’s Tempe Music Festival and I wasn’t disappointed. This year’s festival featured real bands; you know those who play their own instruments and write their own songs, and I always believe this is the best formula for a true music festival. One thing about this event was that it attracted all ages and music lovers from older Tom Morello fans from his Rage Against the Machine and Audioslave days to teenagers out to see AllAmerican Rejects. However, while this can be seen as good in the eyes of some who enjoy all facets of music, it left others a bit antsy wondering when a band of their liking would play next. Another cool feature was the variety of the line-up, as local garage bands played before local popular bands that played before time-tested rock stars. All in all the entire crowd was well-behaved and having a great time, minus the gale force winds on Friday. The highlight of the two day festival include Morello’s The Nightwatchmen who played a quick but dynamic set, All-American Rejects who can always move a crowd with their power-pop, Roger Clyne and the Peacemakers who are a guaranteed success in Arizona, and Shiny Toy Guns who I’ve never seen. When I think of Tempe Music Festival, I never know what to think as the line-ups, crowd and results are varied. I’m still not completely outof-my-mind on this festival, and don’t think that they’ve hit their sweet-spot yet, but look forward to see how it evolves. They obviously have a lot of money to spend, but I’m waiting for the day when they take everything, judge the Arizona crowd and put something together that is a “wow.” Overall it was about a B, but that is a better grade than I’ve given it in the past. Glendale Jazz and Blues Festival: One music festival that knows what they are doing and does it well is the smaller Glendale Jazz and Blues Festival. Unlike the Tempe Music Festival which tries to reach the masses, the Glendale Jazz and Blues Festival just focuses on what they know, and attracts a great crowd. They made it even easier to find the music you like by having separate blues stages and jazz
stages. The crowd at this festival is older, it is lively, it is a bit more fun, and the peoplewatching is top-notch. From horns to blazing guitars, the bands were excellent and ranged from popular locals like Big Pete Pearson to legends like Charlie Musselwhite who I haven’t seen since he played a bit with Ben Harper. Adding to the atmosphere is the unique (for Arizona) downtown Glendale which features a variety of restaurants and shops. This is definitely one of my top events of the year, and while it isn’t appealing to all, it is something that is becoming regarded as one of the top festivals in its space. I give this year’s festival a solid A-; keep your eyes peeled for next year’s. New 18+ Club: Looking to find that niche, Aron Mezo, the mind behind the now deceased e4, has opened after-hours club Afterlife, which is located in the same space as e4. While the space is largely unchanged, the goal is. Seeing a void for after-hours places to wind down, Afterlife will be offering patrons a dining menu from neighbor Cin-cin Bistro, a coffee bar, entertainment, a smoker lounge with hooka stations, novelty gaming like blackjack and craps, “The Rock Room” which hopes to capture the “vibe of a Kid Rock video shoot in underground Prague,” and “The Aqua Room” which will feature up tempo music, dancing girls and shots of o2. Mezo is always a step ahead of everyone else by thinking of ideas to fill a void, and this is no different. I’m not sure how successful it will be, but I’m sure he’s already got the Scottsdale party crowd on the train. Michael McDonald is best known for starring in the sketch comedy show MADtv. He joined the show during the fourth season (1998) and currently holds the record as the longest serving cast member. He has also directed several episodes of NBC’s Scrubs, on which he has guest-starred 5 times. Later on, McDonald would guest star in such shows as Seinfeld, Just Shoot Me!, Family Matters, and News Radio. He also been seen in all three Austin Powers movies, including a role as a security guard being run over by a steam roller in the first installment.

He starred in the films Life Support with Queen Latifah, and Homie Spumoni with Whoopi Goldberg and Joey Fatone. He is currently featured on the TV screen as the host of TV One’s The Funny Spot. Tony’s stand-up comedy talents were showcased in the recent revival of Def Comedy Jam on HBO. He was previously the host of Can You Tell? on Oxygen, and a feature reporter on Battlebots. The Veer Union recently played The Venue in Scottsdale, and the mixture of high school aged scenesters and a few small crowds of college-aged folk drinking at the bars were treated to a quality showpiece of music and meaningful messages. The Venue has an impressive New Orleans style décor, and proved a perfect place to take in this act formed in late 2004 by Crispin (vocals) and Eric (vocals and guitar), and also includes Roots (bass), Fid (guitar), and Neil (drums). The Veer Union strives to provide

positive messages within music that has a slightly darker sound. The five young Port Alberni B.C. natives have been on tour for the past two years, trying to spread their music. The style is a mix of emo, pop, and a somewhat hardcore rock music undertone. Their music sounds a lot like if Disturbed met Good Charlotte at a positive thinking convention and wrote some music. Reads the band’s Myspace Website: “Every song we write about is about hope, whether it’s about hoping to get the girl back, being in a better place, or not being spiteful or cynical. Veering away from the dark and into the light.”
The Veer Union is currently part of a tour supporting the You Can be Anything Foundation, which raises money for schools that are losing music programs due to budget cuts.
The band is signed with Universal/ Motown Records out of New York City and is scheduled to release their newest album, Against the Grain, on April 21st.

This band formed in the fall of 2007 in the mountains of Arizona. We all wanted to push our boundaries as musicians by creating a new style of music- funky Americana, and increase our skills as a live act. How would you describe your style of music? We are the world’s original funky Americana band. Are you any good? Were so good bums off the street throw change at us. What’s the funniest thing that ever happened while performing? We have had many a classic moments on stage, at the right venues we perform with a burlesque troupe, and when you mix Sweet Nasty with burlesque there’s never a dull moment. Who is the craziest band member and why? Mike is relatively the craziest. He is a pyrotechnic and a genius, so you put those two together and it’s always a good time.
What do you do differently that kicks ass over other bands? One of our strengths is that our music is truly universal. We have hard rock fans, punk rock fans, funk music fans, bluegrass, jazz - you name it - our crowds cross the gamut of musical taste which is a reflection of our music. Who gets the most Groupies and why? That would be Jimmy; the guy is so good in bed porn watches him. Tell us a secret about the band: One of us was born in Germany; One of us is a journalist; One of us owns a magazine publication; One of us spent some time as a studio rat for Sony; and One of us holds an explosives license. What do you think will happen to your band in the next 2 years? Nobody knows; we all work hard on all the behind the scenes jobs it takes to make a good band get off the ground. We have already accomplished more in 1 year than most do in 5 years, because of that we expect a brighter future. Got any CDs out that we might buy? Our debut EP Bread, Wine and Circus is available at Barnes and Noble nationwide and at Hastings statewide. We also offer a lot of free and interesting stuff through the website. Do you have any upcoming shows that we should know about? We’ll be at the McDowell Mountain Music Festival on Saturday, April 25th (www. mmmf.net) and are really looking forward to it!
