REVIEWERS ROUNDTABLE The following are reactions from each of AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s film commentators in an effort to generate a well-rounded overview of this weekend’s new releases.
Joseph: “Stoker” is a poetically perverse motion picture. The new drama, which was directed by Chan-wook Park and written by Wentworth Miller - yes, the same Wentworth Miller who starred in FOX’s groundbreaking television series “Prison Break” - breaks down the barriers of abnormality but it does so with literary refinement. In other words, it uses allegories and symbols to tell its story of savagery and strangeness. Having said that, the flick does take a tad too long to get to its explanatory backstory. But when it does, the floodgates are opened so wide that the viewer nearly drowns in its depravity. (Grade: B)
RodgeRs & HammeRstein movies “the King and i” (1956) After his initial stage run with the project, Yul Brynner reprised the role of a lifetime – the commanding King of Siam, whose views are softened by schoolteacher Anna (Deborah Kerr) – in the venture that earned him an Oscar for best actor. “the sound of music” (1965) Hardly anyone has grown up without knowing the screen version of the classic story of nun in training-turned-Von Trapp family governess Maria. That role, Yul Brynner along with Mary Poppins, has kept Julie Andrews a favorite performer over several generations. The film and its director, Robert Wise, earned Oscars ... but Christopher Plummer, the film’s Captain Von Trapp, has been a bit prickly about his association with the picture over the years.

Scott Elrod plays a professional baseball player with a substance abuse problem who is forced into rehab in his hometown thereby finding new hope when he gets honest about his checkered past and takes on coaching duties for a misfit Little League team. (PG-13 - 113 minutes)
Mia Wasikowska plays a friendless young woman who becomes increasingly infatuated with her uncle (Matthew Goode) who, having moved in with her and her emotionally unstable mother (Nicole Kidman), may have ulterior motives. Playing exclusively at The Loft Cinema. (R - 98 minutes)
Joseph: “Home Run” is the kind of faith-based film that is not only what we want but also what we need. Although the new sports drama does not skimp on its message about how sincerely surrendering to God’s unconditional love is the only unfailing footpath to freedom from pain, it communicates said message through an exceptionally entertaining - not to mention moving - story thereby reaching those audience who require recovery the most. Even more significantly, though, the movie reminds us that recovery is less about the substance than it is about the suffering, broadening the definition of things that enslave us. (Grade: B)
Stan: Director Chan-wook Park creates a foreboding atmospheric setting for this story that starts as a coming of age of the younger household member (Mia Wasikowska) and slowly escalates into a household that’s reminiscent of the classic ‘Dark Shadows’ afternoon soap opera of the late 60s, as the quirkiness’s of each of the family members begins to surface. With Nicole Kidman as the mother, and Matthew Goode as the uncle, the starring trio of actors ‘tour de force’ performances serves to ring true the thought of ‘normality is in the eye of the beholder’, and yes, I did substitute normal for beauty, since both are so very subjective, based on our own experiences. (Grade: B+)

Actor Vincent Cassel (‘Trance’) By Stan Robinson “I wasn’t set to do this movie at first, they had somebody else in mind, and Danny (Boyle, director) had me in mind for another movie and when the other actor pulled out, he (Danny Boyle) came to see me in Paris and he said, you know what, I want to you do this one. “From my point of view, I jump in and out of the character, and that’s what I want for myself. As you say, on screen it looks like a lot of setups with detailed intricate staging and dialogue but the shooting schedule

wasn’t too bad actually. We had to work on weekends because Danny was actually preparing for another film at the same time. Some weeks were very strange, some weeks we wouldn’t work on a Thursday and Friday and so forth. ing when it goes fast, and I’m not saying that I want to rush things but when it’s well prepared as Danny is for a film, you can shoot sequences in a row without having to wait too much. I guess maybe it’s because I’m getting older, I like it better. Otherwise I get bored, I’ve been doing this for about 15 years now, so now I feel that there’s time wasting when a film is not well prepared enough because we lose the urgency of making scenes and characters work. Danny is so well prepared and that allows for grabbing hold of the character and making it your own. “As you say, to make this story work, believability is the key factor. I had to be believable when I pulled a gun and that I’d shoot the guy in the head if he didn’t give me what I wanted, or when I’m torturing the other guy, and a the same time I had to be believable that my character is falling in love and accept his vulnerability. You said, it’s a story about the mind and that is very, very true.” – Vincent Cassel
Steve Carell’S top MovieS “Crazy, Stupid, Love.” (2011): A terrific Carell plays a man facing the end of his marriage and finding a very unlikely mentor (Ryan Gosling) in getting back into the single life. “Despicable Me” (2010): Carell’s wit is in high gear as he speaks the words of the animated Gru, a villain whose latest scheme – and evil ways – are derailed by three endearing orphans. “Horton Hears a Who!” (2008): Even in voice only, Carell is amusing as the mayor of Whoville in this animated take on the classic Dr. Seuss tale. “Little Miss Sunshine” (2006): Part of a superb ensemble cast, Carell plays the uncle of a would-be beauty pageant winner (Abigail Breslin).

The Croods A heartfelt animated flick for the kids that made me feel warm and fuzzy at the end, but didn’t keep my attention throughout. Grade: B-
DIDN T KNOW! ‘Scary Movie’ ~ By no means an award winner, but the sequel/parody is a ridiculously fun time poking fun at the genre. Better than ‘A Haunted House.’ Grade: C

Talk about setting the bar high. Cody Van Haren, an EMT from Southwest Ambulance service in Green Valley, is now one-forone in homebrew competitions. The 7-year veteran homebrewer won the Northwest Firefighter’s Charities Top Hops Homebrew Challenge on April 6, beating out more than 20 other competitors. With the victory, 30 kegs worth of Van Haren’s beer, a variation of a Bellgian saison, will be brewed by Thunder Canyon Brewery. Although Haren has brewed his own beer for years, he was very meticulous with this latest batch as it was his first for competition. Although it was just for fun, Van Haren said he was more diligent with note-taking and made sure the beer was as close to perfect as possible. Eventually, he found out he had a winner. It was close, however, said one judge who asked to remain anonymous. There were six beers at the end that could have won it all, he said. As expected, there were a number of India Pale Ales in the field, but Van Haren’s offering and a Turkish coffee stout also made the final cut, the judge said.

closely with the Green Valley Fire Department. Now in its third year, the Top Hops Challenge has grown dramatically, more than doubling in attendance each year. This year, more than 3,000 people came out to Thunder Canyon Brewery, the event lead sponsor, as well as more than a dozen local and state micro breweries. All proceeds from the event are designated for the Northwest Firefighter’s Charities and others designated by each participating fire department. “The event was phenomenal,” said Jason Garza, president of Northwest Firefighters Charity and event organizer. “The beer scene has grown so much now. It was really good to see so many people out there.” Van Haren’s beer will be sold at both Thunder Canyon Brewery locations. Sales will further support charity. Van Haren said he is happy that his creation will help others on multiple levels. “You can’t go wrong with it,” he said. “If you are in a position that you can do this for others, it gives you a great feeling.” Although he won this prestigious competition, Van Haren has no thought to open his own brewery in the near future. His is, however, not opposed to consulting with other homebrewers or breweries. “I trust myself more,” he said. “This was a big confidence booster.”
Food, dance, music and prizes kick off annual event 5-9 pm April 20 on University of Arizona Mall The University of Arizona’s Hawaiian and Pacific Islander Club brings its annual Luau to the heart of the school’s main campus this year. The club will host the fourth annual Luau in conjunction with Mama’s Hawaiian Bar-B-Cue’s Polynesian Festival. “Get HAPI with Mama’s Luau and Polynesian Festival” showcases the culture of Hawaii and other Pacific islands. Students, faculty, staff and local residents can watch dances, music and other talents performed by the student community and local halaus, or dance schools for hula and various Pacific performing arts. Children can
receive Polynesian-style face paint and temporary tattoos. While entertainment is free for attendees, the club will sell tickets for the Luau’s Hawaiian buffet. Attendees can purchase raffle tickets and earn the chance to win prizes including an Amazon Kindle Fire and tickets to Disneyland Park in Anaheim, California. The club hopes to use proceeds to establish a scholarship fund for future Hawaiian and Pacific Islander Club members. Doors open at 5pm on Saturday, April 20, 2013 at The University of Arizona Mall.
