In the end, for me, there is something positive in this theme and I hope that it shines through in the music.” Festival 2009 choreographer Ludwig asks audience members,

Columbinus Explores Horrors of Adolescence

Tempe- NIU. Virginia Tech. It would be nice to say Columbine was just “something that happened 10 years ago.” Now through Saturday, April 25th, Stray Cat Theatre is performing Columbinus, a production that focuses on the disturbing, darkest recesses of American adolescence. Sparked by the April 1999 massacre at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado, this production is a Laramie Project-style meeting of fact and fiction that illuminates the realities and

horrors of adolescent culture by exploring the events surrounding the shootings. The play weaves together excerpts from discussions with parents, survivors, and community leaders in Littleton as well as police evidence. A searing and heartbreaking examination of human behavior, Columbinus documents the tragedy by asking more than just “Why?”, but perhaps more frighteningly, “Just how much can a kid endure before he snaps?” The Tempe Performing Arts Center is located at 132 E. 6th Street in Tempe’s Mill Avenue District. For more information and tickets, please call (480) 820-8022 or log onto www.straycattheatre.org.

My character this time around is Venus, who’s more of a soldier and understands the art of war. He’s intense, full of rage and revenge, and I felt quite at home with the character.

By Stan Robinson Street-smart Washington D.C. investigative reporter Cal McCaffrey (Oscar® winner Russell Crowe) undertakes his latest assignment. Washington is a place where big business and politicians are often one and the same. U.S. Congressman Stephen Collins (Ben Affleck) is a rising political star and long-time friend of McCaffrey’s, who serves as the chairman of a committee overseeing defense spending. When the congressman asks McCaffrey for help after his research assistant/mistress is brutally murdered, the scope of Collins’ involvement is slowly revealed. State of Play is very high on my ‘must see’ list, with another outstanding performance by Crowe, who has strung together some impressive ‘Joe Schmo’ characters recently, like Ed Hoffman in Body of Lies and Detective Richie Roberts in American Gangster.

to watch. The film is not a musical, but rather a story of this magnificent theatre and the people who made it what it was. The backdrop of the turbulent political times in France prior to World War II add drama and intrigue. Sony Pictures Classics has an art-house hit for American audiences with this one. It will go down as a classic with the likes of Cinema Paradiso and will please those looking for a something other than traditional multiplex fare.

Sin Nombre: No One’s Going Anywhere

By Stan Robinson Sin Nombre, a winner at the 2009 Sundance Film Festival, is the feature film debut of Student Academy Award winner Cary Joji Fukunaga. The cinematic and directing style gives us a view of life that we’ve only read about. Sin Nombre means ‘nameless’, which is the plight of one of the main characters, identified by a teardrop tattoo near his right eye. The film follows the separate

dance at their local performance theatre named Chansonia. The theatre provides jobs for the residents, and many of the staff have been working there for decades, including stagehand Pigoil (Gerard Jugnot). As midnight fast approaches, so does the deadline for the theatre owners to repay monies owed to the town “godfather.” The clock strikes midnight, and instead of giving away the Chansonia and dealing with the consequences, the manager puts a bullet to his head. The theatre is immediately closed by the new owner and the employees are out of a job.

Fu, lifted weights, and virtually lived in the gym for more than five hours a day! In the film, the funny thing is nobody knows that Kaylo has a twin brother, so it’s going to be much more of a surprise to a lot of people. I found him so similar to my own life. We also have our differences. One is very passive, and one is very active. I have an identical twin and I looked at it like my relationship with my twin brother. It’s always important to be the vessel, so you’re able to best tell the story through the character’s eyes. SR: You worked with the same two directors on the first Crank. As always, on the next film in a series, the action and stunts are always more! What was it like for you with more action screen time? ER: This one is like Crank times a thousand! There are so many cameras, so many different positions and angles! And you see so many sides of LA. In the Crank films, you see little pieces of what the underground L.A. scene is like. I don’t think that’s ever seen.

The once proud and merry Pigoil cannot put food on the table, which forces the authorities to take away his son. Pigoil and his buddy, the rebel rousing Milou (Clovis Cornillac) join forces with other former staff to seize occupancy of the Chansonia and put on a show which will allow them to raise enough money to buy the theatre. They enlist the talents of a beautiful singer (Nora Arnezeder) to star in their show. Paris 36 is quintessentially French, extremely entertaining, and a cinema lover’s dream. OMG! Like, did you hear? Total hottie Zac Efron is in a new movie and it looks so good! What the hordes of teenage Efron fans may not realize is that his new movie, 17 Again, isn’t quite as original as the new abbreviations they just made up while texting. The age-changing theme has been done many times before (See Story Below), but never with the star of High School Musical. It has been done with Kirk Cameron (when Growing Pains was all the rage), Fred Savage (when Wonder Years was all the rage) and numerous other times (when something else was all the rage). In 17 Again, Matthew Perry plays Mike O’Donnell, a 37-year old professional who longs for his days as a player on the Hayden Warriors varsity basketball team. He made a few choices in high school which he has since regretted, and wishes he could do it all over again. On a dark and stormy night, Mike has a strange encounter with an old mysterious gentleman on a bridge that will change his life. Shortly thereafter, he finds himself seventeen again (Efron) and revisiting high school. Can this opportunity allow him to relive his dream of being a star basketball player, or will having to attend class with his teenage son and daughter get in the way? You’ll just have to check it out and see.

The Night Owl

Cash-Thirsty DJs battle for a $1,000 GRAND PRIZE!

If you have an entertainment event or item to include in “The Night Owl” send to brent.diggins@azweeklymagazine.com “The Night Owl” will cover restaurants, clubs, bars, celebrities, music and other miscellaneous events.

Contact Library Bar & Grill to enter. 10pm Start.

BY BRENT DIGGINS AND EFIA MOORE Oh, the Night Owls are ALL over the board this week to bring you some of the best events, exhibits, music, and night spots around the Valley. We are just so all over everything it isn’t funny. We think it has to do with the differences in the two personalities, interests, and demographics of the two Night Owl writers. For all that happened, is happening, and will happen in the Valley, read on. NU (Native + You): I’ve seen the Heard Museum of Native Cultures and Art a million times during one of my many jaunts down town, always promising myself I’d stop in “one day.” I don’t know why I never have gone, seeing as how the Heard Museum is supposed to be a notable Southwestern treasure. Now I have an important reason to stop in, NU. Rather than trying to lure us Night Owls with really cool day time exhibits, the museum has made us an offer we can’t refuse: an evening event. On the third Friday of each month, the Heard will host NU (Native + You). NU features a cash bar, the Arcadia Farms Café, exhibited art, and live music, all in a lounge setting without a cover. Yes, you read this correctly, a lounge-like setting with live music, food, and cocktails without paying a cover. There are no more excuses as to why you and I haven’t been to the Heard yet. The next event will be this Friday, April 17th, from 5:30 to 9pm. Phoenix Gay Pride Festival: Come on admit it, you’re a little curious to see what goes on at the Phoenix Gay Pride Festival. For all you Pride virgins, this is your year to embrace diversity and experience Pride. For you Pride veterans it’s time to celebrate. This weekend there will be countless parties for the Valley’s GLBT community. I suggest you begin your Pride celebration Saturday, April 18th at 11am by following the Parade from 3rd St. and Thomas Road to Indian School Road, ending at Steele Indian School Park in Phoenix. April 18th -19th from noon to 9pm, the park will be home to the Pride Festival, which will feature live entertainment, an art expo, and over 250 vendors at Pride Marketplace. Tickets for the festival are $25 for weekend passes, $15 for single day passes, with free admission for children 12 years old and younger. Gay or straight, it is an event everyone can enjoy.

For more information about Phoenix Gay Pride Festival, visit www.azpride.org.

MMMF Pre-party: The McDowell Mountain Music Festival is nearly upon us, but things are going to kick-off early with a pre-party on Thursday, April 23rd at Temple Bar in Scottsdale. At the party, Valley band and MMMF performers Delcoa will play at 8:00pm, and the MMMF street-team will be there to give out a bunch of prizes (including tickets and passes for the festival!). Haven James and Random Karma will also be on hand as special guests. MMMF will be taking place April 24th and 25th; for information and tickets to the main event, visit mmmf.net. Night Owl News & Notes: Website www. foodiebytes.com rates restaurants by popular dishes, not just a listing—pretty cool idea, but the Valley reviews are too populated; Moody Blues at the Dodge Theatre has been cancelled; Tickets for U2’s 360° Tour stop in Phoenix with special guests The Black Eyed Peas are on sale— save up your cash; 311’s annual Summer Unity tour is coming to Phoenix July 10th at the Dodge Theatre—good line-up including Ziggy Marley.

Go-gos, Tigers and Drinks—Oh My!: Support a great cause, drink beer, and see the Go-Gos and the new Sumatran tiger. What? When? Where? One of my VERY favorite events of the year, ZooBrew, is going to take place on April 24th from 7:00-11:00pm. The beer festival helps to support the Phoenix Zoo and all its wonderful animals, including their brand new Sumatran Tiger, one of the rarest animals in the world. This year the Go-Gos are the headlining act, which should be pretty fun, although I always think events should just get local cover-bands to appeal to all audiences. Anyway, this is always a great people-watching event and should be extra special this year, with a fun Hawaiian theme setting the environment. Tickets range from $85-125 (non-members) and can be purchased at phoenixzoo.org/ zoobrew2009.

Phoenix- The Annual Phoenix Pride Parade and Festival returns to the Valley for its 29th year, welcoming all to celebrate the rich history of the LGBT community, starting April 18th at 11am. The two-day event commences with its infamous parade – a visually dynamic and vibrant staple of the celebration – and one of the largest in the state, with more than 150 floats and marchers. This year, Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon will serve as Grand Marshall, accompanied by Tijuana human rights activist and International Grand Marshall, Lorenzo Hererra. The close of the parade signifies the beginning of the two-day festival, host EVPA-1014 1-4 Square

to more than 250 vendors, numerous food and beverage options, entertainment acts from around the world, and talented Valley performers, among other attractions. “Not only is the event a celebration of LGBT culture, but it’s also a chance to bring together many different communities,” said Pride Executive Director Brandi Sokolosky. “Our overall goal is to increase awareness of the LGBT population, and this event presents the perfect opportunity to do that – and have a great time, too!”

The parade route travels along Third Street from Thomas Road to Indian School Road, and the Festival will be held at Steele Indian School Park at Third Street and Indian School Road. For more information, log onto www. phoenixpride.org. Color.qrk.qxd:4.92x5.67 1/4 Square 3/6/09 12:04 PM

Dear Coach Lea, I am crazy about my stepbrother--- our parents married about 3 years ago. I am 24 and Mike is 27, and he lives in San Diego. We are not blood related but he was really good to me when my last boyfriend hit me and now I can’t stop thinking about him. We talk and laugh a lot and I think he likes me too. I told my mom and she thinks that we are perfect for each other… What should I do?

life together, but unfortunately it ended. I cannot believe how many single women are on the market in Scottsdale. I am 40 and it seems that the men prefer women in their 20’s and 30s. Of course my ex already is shacked up with a 32 year old. I now feel old and alone. What can I do?

I have known 2 girls in my life who ended up marrying under similar circumstances. I think the key is that you weren’t raised as brother and sister; it was just something that happened after you were both adults. Flirt a little with Mike and see what happens—either he’s in or out…. Keep me posted. Dear Divorced, Dear Lea, I just got divorced and I am shocked at how hard it is to find someone decent to date. I was married to my husband for 15 years and we had a good

Yes it is true Scottsdale does have lots of single women, but you have to quit comparing yourself to others. It sounds as it your self -esteem has taken a hit and that you should be working on that prior to dating. People are attracted

to happy, confident people. It may sound a bit cliché, but before you can be happy with anyone else you must be happy with yourself. Be of service to others and you will take the focus off of yourself. Do things that make you happy such as yoga or a class. (You may want to try Adventures 2000 –it’s an activity club for singles) Find the joy in every moment. Enjoy being with yourself in the moment and then others will find the joy in you. Keep me posted. Lea

This laptop is hard to pass up. It is intended for gamers, but the hardware in the machine really pushes the benchmarks, and it is priced just right for the main consumer. It has a 17” screen that has a1440 x 900 resolution and can be found for about $1,299. The higherend Intel Core 2 Duo P8400 CPU and Nvida GeForce 9800 is enough to play any game, and is great for watching video and using as a desktop replacement.

The new Dell XPS series of laptops are very nice and are competing with Apple on the sleek design elements. I really like the smaller form factor, and this machine has a lot of power to get you through those long plane rides and lengthy college lectures. If you are a Windows only type person, this would be a great second choice to a great laptop. It is much lighter than the Apple machine (about 1 lb), and can play video for a little over three hours on the stock battery.

With touch screens and gestures becoming mainstream, I couldn’t leave out my favorite tablet PC of the bunch. Lenovo has been making great tablet machines for quite some time, and the new X200 packs in many refinements of their previous models. It is lighter, has a better speaker system, uses Intel’s new Centrino 2 platform, and incorporates a new widescreen display. For those of you on the go, this is a great machine. Wake Lab Rips up Music Fest; JD Webb Rides to Win Tempe, AZ- The Red Bull Wake Lab once again proved its obvious visual appeal to Tempe Music Festival goers two weekends ago, as Tempe Beach Park hosted a display of aerial wonder and wipeouts that saw the gathered throngs grow throughout Saturday’s competition. “Friday got so windy, we had to pack it up early,” said Red Bull spokesman Scott Houston, “but that just meant we had to start early today so everyone could get in their runs. It’s ok though. The riders love it, the people watching love it, and Tempe Town Lake rocks for these kind of events.”

The ‘Lab’ apparatus is composed of various ramps, walls, and rails, and the rider is pulled through it by the Sesitec System 2.0; two opposing towers on either side that hold suspended cables between them, with a mechanized pulley attached to the rope and handle. It is brilliantly designed, and features the primary ingredients Red Bull rider Parks Bonifay said were essential in its construction. “It had to have an elevated pool and a quarter pipe,” says the wakeboarding legend and WakeLab design consultant. “The people at Red Bull are all about changing the sport, so they came to me and asked for input. The WakeLab is fastpaced and perfect for live crowds and TV, so I definitely think it will help popularize wakeboarding among the general public.”

VALLEY SPORTS SCHEDULES

Though the mechanized Sesitec System 2.0 precludes the WakeLab (and wakeboarding in general because of the boat that is required) from being an X-Game event, where it would surely gain a bigger platform of mainstream exposure, Houston knows that wherever he sets up, people are going to come by to check it out. “The WakeLab event is about raising people’s awareness of wakeboarding and building that relationship between the Red Bull brand and the people who associate it with this new, energetic sport,” he said. “Red Bull Wake Lab Tempe was hands-down the best wakeboarding event I’ve ever participated in,” said pro rider JD Webb, who was

the event’s overall winner. “From today’s perfect weather to the huge, supportive crowd and the amazing, challenging structure, I was happy to just be involved, let alone win.” At the end of a day of tight competition, four riders walked away with awards – Aaron Rathy (Most Progressive), Adam Errington (Best Trick), Bonifay (Best Line) and Webb (Best Overall). Women’s Expo is Your Prescription for Well Being

Health and Wellness is coming to the 2009 Arizona Women’s Expo in a large way this year. In a slow economy there are few things that people can really control and one is their health. In order to encourage women to take control of this aspect of their lives, the Arizona Women’s Expo has created a Health and Wellness Village, which aims to bring awareness to women regarding their mental and physical well-being. The Arizona Women’s Expo, presented by SPARK Magazine, is scheduled for April 25th and 26th and will be held at The University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale. The Expo is one of Arizona’s largest annual consumer trade shows, and this year’s event will include hundreds of vendors on-site selling, demonstrating, and giving away thousands of products and services. The Health and Wellness Village will encompass non-profit organizations that focus on providing women the means to stay on top of their health and overall well being, including learning about ways that diet, exercise and stress can affect someone’s quality of life. It is sponsored by the Cancer Treatment Centers of America, who will be celebrating the grand opening of their first hospital in the southwest region. CTCA’s newest hospital is located at Western Regional Medical Center, 14200 W. Fillmore Street, Goodyear, Arizona. Please visit www.CancerCenter.com for more information. The new and improved site, designed by The Stevens Company, will make it easier for Gabriel’s Angels to attract, train, reward, and retain a steady group of volunteers as well as communicate with prospective and established donors, partner agencies, and the community which in turn will allow them to expand their range of service to children. “Our old site did not encourage repeat visits,” states Gaber. “Now we will be able to communicate on a much more professional level and more productively, which will ultimately result in helping more children. In order to see our organization grow, we have to continuously find ways to communicate better with the community. Our new

Car thieves be warned: As of today, the odds have increased that the next car you steal will land you in jail. Recently, Allstate Insurance donated a “bait car” to the Avondale Police Department that is outfitted with advanced technology to assist with catching car thieves in action. Avondale’s new bait car will be placed in various locations throughout the community in an attempt to reel in and catch car thieves in the act – hook, line and sinker.

Avondale is one of fourteen communities across the United States chosen to receive a bait car donated by Allstate. Avondale Police Chief Kevin Kotsur and Mayor Marie Lopez Rogers officially accepted the new bait car recently at a press conference. To maintain its secret identity and not tip off thieves, the actual bait car donated to the city was not visible to attendees. However, a demonstration bait car, outfitted with the same technology, was on hand for a live demonstration of how these vehicles are used to catch car Vertical thieves. 3/5/09 5:01 PM Page 1 A vehicle is stolen in America every 26 seconds, adding up to 1.2 million vehicles each year. According to the National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB), the Phoenix metro area is ranked 8th in the nation for the number of vehicle thefts, down from 4th in 2006. And the City of Avondale has also seen a decrease in auto thefts in the past three years. In 2008, 752 vehicles were reported stolen

in Avondale; this is compared with 837 in 2007 and 1,031 in 2006. From 2006 to 2008, Avondale auto thefts have actually declined 27%. The decline may be attributed to the programs Avondale uses to combat auto theft, which include automatic license plate readers in undercover vehicles, public VIN-etching events offered throughout the year, the “Watch Your Car” program, and continuous public education efforts. Utilizing the bait car will further assist Avondale in its efforts to reduce vehicle thefts.

Avondale PD Uses Bait Car to Thwart Thieves

“Auto thieves in the West Valley should beware. The next car they steal could be a police bait car,” added Chief Kotsur. “We appreciate the commitment and support of the folks at Allstate and look forward to seeing the results of our bait car.” Consumers can take simple steps to significantly reduce their likelihood of becoming a car theft victim. Common sense techniques such as always locking your vehicle, parking in well-lit spaces, and closing all windows and the sunroof, are a good start to prevention. In addition, the NICB recommends using a “layered approach” to vehicle theft protection, including installing warning devices such as alarms and VIN etching, using immobilizing devices like smart keys and fuse cut-offs, and tracking devices. According to Bailey, “One of the most important steps consumers can take to be prepared for vehicle theft is to be sure they have the proper coverage. Mandatory state minimum Insurance requirements in most states don’t cover vehicle theft; only comprehensive auto insurance will cover these losses.”

Created, promoted, and executed by Wespac Construction, Inc, one hundred percent of MMMF proceeds benefit two local familybased charities, Phoenix Day and Golden Gate Community Center. Last year, $130,000 was split between the two charities.

Overview

Are you prepared for the Valley’s best non-profit live music festival? United we jam with The Flaming Lips (coming back to the Valley for the first time since 2002!) and co-headliner Michael Franti & Spearhead, who are joined by 11 local and national bands, making for a melodious weekend filled with food, friends, and fun for your entire family (kids under 10 free with adult purchase!) Weekend tickets (VIP and General Admission) are on sale, and only 10,000 tickets per day are allotted, so reserve your spot in the audience now. Don’t miss the chance to witness the historical guitar duo Hot Tuna, follow the trail of Railroad Earth, classically rock out to the Native American group Indigenous, beatbox with reggae giant Matisyahu, dance the Irish jig with the Young Dubliners, hitch along with the New Riders of the Purple Sage, and congregate with Assembly of Dust on April 24th and 25th!!!!

Silent Auction

Incredibly generous people from the community have donated music and sports memorabilia, vacation giveaways, and tons of more stuff that will be auctioned off throughout the weekend. If Silent Auction isn’t your style, this is also the place to register to win “The Best Seat in the House” which is located on stage in a comfy couch right next to the band. The cost for a “Best Seat” raffle ticket is $10. You pick the band you want to see up close and personal, enter as many times as you’d like, and winners will be selected ten minutes prior to the band’s performance.

Camping / RV Parking

With 300 camping spots and hundreds of RV spots to offer, there is no reason to leave the Festival throughout the weekend. Both camping and RV spots are still available – camping is $40 for four people (both nights) and can be purchased through ticketmaster.com. RV Parking is through WestWorld of Scottsdale. The latest addition to the MMMF Campsite this year: coffee, bagels and breakfast burritos by Next Coffee, available for purchase Friday and Saturday morning.

Marketplace

With nearly 40 vendors from all over the country, there is truly something for everyone in the Marketplace. Hand-made jewelry, 100% recycled clothing, tiedye and ceramics are just a few things you might come across. Tucked away in the corner of the Marketplace are the Creamy Radio™ Acoustic Stage, Remo™ Drum Circle and Kid’s Zone.

McDowell Mountain Music Festival

Stage, and an on-site Beer Garden offering both domestic and import beers from Coors Banquet brand, the McDowell Mountain Music Festival is not just about seeing live bands. A weekend “Hooky Happy Hour” presented by Cruz tequila is also planned, which includes food and drink specials with acoustic performances. RV parking and tent camping is also available.

Remo™ Drum Circle

Featuring Arizona Rhythm Connection, the Remo™ Drum Circle provides Festival-goers the opportunity to enhance their musical experience by expressing themselves by having fun making music! Remo, Inc., a manufacturer of drums and percussion instruments, is donating the drums, and drum circle facilitators will make sure everyone is on beat and having a great time.

Creamy Radio™ Acoustic Stage

Back by popular demand, the MMMF has once again partnered with Creamy Radio to present the acoustic stage in the Marketplace. Creamy Radio is an internet radio station that emphasizes tunes you won’t find on the FM dial, like fringe, independent, and local bands, as well as deep tracks from mainstream artists. They cover eclectic music from mainstream to the indie scene.

Kid’s Zone

Bungee rides, jumping castles, stilt walkers, and arts and crafts with Fender™ are just a few activities that will be going on throughout the weekend. Remember – kids 10 and under are free with adult purchase! You can keep track of them if you register at Will Call for the No Child Left Behind Pass, in the unfortunate case they get lost – we can easily bring you and your loved ones back together again.

Merchandise

Tired of going out and seeing people wearing the same clothes that you are wearing? Be fashionforward and sport the unique MMMF Merchandise. This year we are offering girl’s tanks, hoodies, and band gear. And remember, 100% of your money is going directly to local kids’ in the community. It’s a win-win! AZWeeklyMagazine.com

Phoenix- West side Chicago blues legend Eddy “The Chief” Clearwater, touring in support of his debut Alligator CD, West Side Strut, will be appearing at the Rhythm Room (1019 E. Indian School Rd.) in Phoenix on Friday, April 17th. Clearwater is an intense, flamboyant, blues-rocking showman. He’s equally comfortable playing the deepest, most heartfelt blues or rocking good-time party music. Between his slashing guitar work, his room-filling vocals, and his self-defined “rock-a-blues” style (a mix of blues, rock, rockabilly, country and gospel), Clearwater is among the very finest practitioners of the blues performing today. The blues world recognized his talent by giving him the

Skye Celebrates Legacy of Mercury, Queen

Peoria- There is little doubt among the pure rock community that the legendary band Queen and lead performer Freddie Mercury are one of the most powerful, influential groups in history, as they performed to packed stadiums around the globe for over two decades. Upon Mercury’s death in 1991, a huge void was left in the rock concert world, which to this day has not yet been matched. Queen Nation, a tribute to Queen, is a premier tribute show. Their live, 90-minute production of Queen’s greatest hits preserves the image, sound, and stage persona of vintage AZWeeklyMagazine.com

Queen. Audiences are amazed at the accuracy of Queen Nation’s live retrospective journey through such songs as ‘We Will Rock You’, ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’, and ‘We Are The Champions’, and many more. Queen Nation will be appearing in The Platinum Room at Skye, on Friday, April 24th. Skye is located at 16844 N. Arrowhead Fountains Center Dr. in Peoria.
