Miss Saigon Wows ABT Crowds By Nicholas Connell

Arizona Broadway Theatre in Peoria unleashed a riveting and stunning production of the Broadway hit musical, Miss Saigon last weekend. Directed by Joe Martinez, starring Mark Diconzo as the Engineer, EJ Zimmerman as Kim, and Jason Paul as GI Christopher Scott, this production is a moving expose of love and sacrifice. This modern adaption of the Madame Butterfly opera is set in Vietnam during the fall of Saigon. Mark is seductive and flippant as the Engineer of play and pleasure at the Dreamland brothel in Saigon, where Kim falls in love with Scott. He weaves a tale of quiet desperation in “The Heat is On in Saigon”, ‘Bartering for Kim”, “The Deal”, “The Morning of the Dragon”, and “If You Want to Die in Bed”.

But Puccini never forgets his love story, and in Miss Saigon, EJ and Jason take us to a place of love and hope in “The Movie in My Mind”, “Sun and Moon”, “Unicorn”, “The Wedding”, and “Last Night of the World”. Other great performances are Eymard Cabling as Thuy, Kim’s Vietnamese suitor, Angelo Rios as the Sergeant John, Jacqueline Rez as Scott’s American wife, Ellen, plus the attractive and raw cast of dancers, GI’s, and company members who strutted the stage in colorful fashion at Dreamland and in “Kim’s Nightmare” sequence in Bangkok. All this was supported by Adam Berger, Jeff Kennedy and the powerful ABT band! Mix in some special effects, helicopters, and the lovable young Vietnamese/American child Tam, and you have an adventure worth the travel. For tickets, call (623) 776-8400 or order tickets online at www.azbroadwaytheatre. com.

Widowed, retired Austrian naval officer, Captain Von Trapp has made his Austrian home one of overly-restrictive and harshly-enforced discipline; one that causes his seven children to be under nourished when it comes to joy and love. Being a nun living in a convent is similarly restrictive and unfulfilling for Maria, who breaks rules to try to change it. The reverend mother decides that Maria, who is not cutting it as a nun, should leave and take on a job as governess at the nearby Von Trapp household in Salzburg. Through music and various outings, Maria gives the children a taste of a more fulfilling, joyous, life than they have ever known, and they come to love her very dearly. AZWeeklyMagazine.com

Ring of Fire Rocks Broadway Palm Dinner Theatre By Nicholas Connell

The music of the ‘Man in black’, Johnny Cash, came to town last weekend with Ring of Fire at The Broadway Palm Dinner Theatre in Mesa, and the show was so hot even the fire alarms went off! And that’s no joke! This new hit show featuring over 30 of Cash’s greatest hits will move and entertain anyone who has ever been touched by a Cash song-which meant everyone in attendance on opening night. And the “Circle of Cash” never missed a beat as the “Ring of Fire” played hit after hit! There are so many stars in this regional production that you’ll just have to get a ticket and count your favorites! From “Country Boy” to the heart stopping “Ragged Old Flag”, the cast and orchestra of this show were on a mission to “Walk the Line” for Johnny AZWeeklyMagazine.com

and his music. Led by Peter Roze and Doug Yeomans, who also played guitar on the National Tour, these band members and cast were blazing hot all night! “Hi I’m Johnny Cash” would be an underscore for the stories and feelings that were left on the stage for everyone to see. And what we saw were some great performances by Rachel Goldrick, Katherine Walker Hill, Mike Long, Scott Moreau, Julie Keough, Marija Reiff, Todd Meredith, and Sean Riley who took us down the memory lane that is Johnny Cash. Also lightning sharp were Jason Labrador on fiddle, David Burdett on drums, and Christopher Steven Rose on upright bass. Don’t miss this high-quality production of the Ring of Fire. It’s a music lovers dream to experience a show of shows with Johnny Cash on parade. For tickets, call (480) 3256700 or order online at BroadwayPlamWest.com.

Rare Cognac Goes for $500/ Shot at RitzCarlton

Courvoisier L’Esprit is a smooth, fullbodied cognac with the youngest cognac in the blend more than 70 years old and the oldest originating from the Napoleon era. Its subtly complex finish offers delicate flavors of old port wine mixed with hints of coffee beans, the smoke of Havana cigars, the sweet fragrances of apricots and cinnamon, and subtle notes of honey. Strikingly presented in an exclusive, hand-cut Lalique crystal decanter, each bottle that was made represents an original work of art, as no two are ever the same. For a private tasting, or to reserve a glass, collectors and guests are invited to contact hotel sommelier Art Froehlich at (602) 522-6776.

It is no longer possible to purchase the rare Courvoisier L’Esprit blend at retail, but The Club Bar will make it available at $500 for a oneounce serving. The full bottle, a coveted acquisition among collectors worldwide, is also available for purchase at $9,500.

Tempe- Did you know that Friday and Saturday night hangovers have been best friends with The Tavern on Mill since 2004, because it serves weekend breakfast from 9am until noon all year round? Sure, when football season is in play a number of places will open early, but the Tavern is the only place on Mill Ave. that consistently offers an actual breakfast menu to those seeking liver-relieving sustenance or maybe a light bite before the part time

Cardinals and Sun Devils gridirons feel the sweet thud of cleats once again, there is always something for everyone at the Tavern; Tempe’s quintessential ‘appeal-to-the-masses’ establishment (though daily drink and food specials prevent the carboncopy monotony of some places). Embracing tourists, families large and small, and even the pooch, the folks at the Tavern on Mill know how to take care of any guest that happens by. The Tavern on Mill is located at 404 S. WINE! SECTION

For the Love of Wine In my years at Sportsman’s Fine Wines & Spirits, I have fielded thousands of wine questions. It is my hope to spend the next few weeks addressing the more frequently asked questions. If you have a question that you would like an answer to, please feel free to e-mail me at nate@ sportsmans4wine.com.

But first, let me take a moment to introduce myself; my name is Nathan Mears, and I am the Director of Operations at Sportsman’s Fine Wines & Spirits. For the last twenty years or so I have worked in the food and beverage industry, and am passionate about all things food and wine related, so I look forward to sharing my enthusiasm with you! This week is short and sweet. A

particularly “hot” topic here in the desert is, “How long can I leave my wine in the car?” The answer is, “You can’t.” Wine should be on that list of things you can’t leave in the car, along with kids, dogs, ice cream, and raw chicken. Wine, like any perishable food, is damaged by heat. When it’s over-heated, it will have little to no fruit characters and cooked aromas will resemble something like burnt fruit or jam. Another keen thing to remember is that liquid expands as it heats. Imagine the mess Cabernet makes when it leaks all over the seat of your car. A few simple rules to follow: 1- Always use the air conditioner, 2- Never put the wine in the trunk, and 3- When traveling great distances or making stops, utilize a cooler or insulated bag with ice. Until next week, Cheers!

Sportsman’s Bistro Wine Bar Enjoy gourmet appetizers, lunch and dinner offerings paired with fine wines or your favorite brew. Plus, we are the ONLY Wine Shop in Phoenix that allows you to buy a bottle of wine and enjoy it right here in our Bistro for only $5 more. Whether it’s Wine, Beer or Spirits our knowledgeable, friendly service makes the Sportsman’s experience unparalleled!

Cowboy Mouth Tickets Available Now Scottsdale- On May 23 , Martini rd

Ranch in Old Town Scottsdale will be the site of a funk/rock/blues New Orleans-inspired, revival-style throw down unlike anything the Valley has seen north of the Tempe Music Fest, and tickets went on sale last Saturday. That’s right, Cowboy Mouth will be back in town after their feel-good thrashing earlier this month brought crowds to their feet at Tempe Beach Park and left people dancing for more. People participation is a must at a Cowboy Mouth show. Drummer frontman Fred LeBlanc’s presence is larger-than-life, and the band’s performances are high energy and extraordinarily intense, usually leaving audiences as drenched and spent as the musicians. Cowboy Mouth fans range from ages five to

18

age eighty-five, but they have one thing in common - as Fred confides to the audience, “Cowboy Mouth is about pretending that you’re five years old, naked as a jaybird and about to turn the hose on your parents, and there’s not a damn thing they can do about it.”

Get Ready for Wild, Rockin’ Times at ZooBrew

Always on the road, they’ve toured several times with their friends Hootie and the Blowfish, Barenaked Ladies, Sister Hazel and Better Then Ezra. Annually presenting roughly 200 shows per year and releasing nearly a dozen records, Cowboy Mouth has been sharing a slice of Mardi Gras heaven with millions of fans worldwide.

Phoenix- On April 24th from 7pm11pm, the Phoenix Zoo will be transformed into a concert for more than 3,000 guests, as 80s cover band 68 Guns will open the night’s musical festivities by warming up the crowd for the Go-Gos. Apart from the melodious magic on stage, ZooBrew 2009 will also feature specialty food and beverage sampling, fantastic prize giveaways, and of course, a number of frothy, foamy ales to set the party mood.

Advance tickets will be priced at $20.00, and are available at www. livenation.com, Dodge Theatre Box Office, and to charge by phone, call (877) LYV-6671. For more show information, check out www. livenation.com.

One of the raffle prizes is a 3-day, 2-night stay in Las Vegas where winners can get up-close and personal with the original members of REO Speedwagon. The prize includes two tickets from U.S. Airways to fly and see the band, along with two meet and greet

passes. Another featured raffle item is a one-of-a-kind, custom electric guitar. The winner will choose the design, color, wood and then follow the process as the guitar is hand made by MUDD Guitars. ZooBrew is supported by 98.7 The Peak, azcentral.com, and BJ’s Restaurant & Brewhouse. Come “Get Your Wild On” at ZooBrew 2009! All proceeds from the event support the Phoenix Zoo, located at 455 N. The Night Owl If you have an entertainment event or item to include in “The Night Owl” send to brent.diggins@azweeklymagazine.com “The Night Owl” will cover restaurants, clubs, bars, celebrities, music and other miscellaneous events.

BY BRENT DIGGINS AND EFIA MOORE Things have been b-a-n-a-n-a-s lately with all the events going on around town, and this weekend it’ll just get crazier as my favorite event of the year has arrived. The weather is going to warm up REAL quick, meaning we might only have a couple of weekends left before the heat rolls in, so get outside and live it up with our suggestions and keep your eye out for me. To find out what happened, what’s happening, and what will happen in the Valley, read on. McDowell Mountain Music Festival: Ah, my very favorite event of the year is here; the McDowell Mountain Music Festival. Held at West World with the backdrop of the McDowell Mountains looming, it is one of the best events the Valley has to offer, and its name and respect is growing throughout the music world each year. At the festival, expect to see people from all over the country having a great time while listening to great acts like Michael Franti & Spearhead, The Flaming Lips, Matisyahu, and Hot Tuna. Plus New Riders of the Purple Sage are going to be there so expect Dead Heads and hippies out in force. In addition to the music, there is an entire marketplace that offers all sorts of crafts and goodies. As for newer bands, you may want to check out Delcoa, Haven James, and Random Karma— all local acts that are very talented. Now, I’ve been to many a music festival all over the country, and while McDowell Mountain doesn’t have the name or attract the crowds some of the biggest events feature, it does have its logistics down. Lines are generally quick, it isn’t overly crowded, and the music usually goes off without a hitch, plus the weather is typically unbeatable. Even if you don’t like the bands that are playing, I suggest going for the people watching. For more information, visit mmmf.net. Remember: all proceeds go to charity. Taste 2009: One of the Valley’s most popular events for socialites, The Taste 2009, will be taking place at Kierland Commons on April 26th, and yes, I’ll be there too. I’m seriously going to need a day off after the weekend. If you aren’t familiar, The Taste sees a variety of food and beverage providers line the streets of Kierland (which is closed down), and people mingle, eat, drink and people watch, with proceeds benefitting the Boys & Girls Clubs of Metropolitan Phoenix. It is a semi-

formal event with an older demographic (If you are 30 you are on the young side). Crowds are BIG; think 5,000 plus and things can get very cramped so be prepared for that. This year, over forty of the Valley’s most recognizable restaurants will be offering their fare. A single ticket starts at $150 and there will also be live entertainment. If you see me, stop and say hello. For more information, visit taste2009.com. Rosie McCaffrey’s: A lot of places claim to be an authentic Irish Pub, but are nothing more than a local bar that serves Irish whiskey and beer. After crossing the pond for a visit, I now know what a real pub is like. Having Guinness on tap doesn’t make for an authentic Irish pub; it’s about the atmosphere too. So when I went to Rosie McCaffrey’s Irish Pub in Phoenix off of Camelback, I was impressed. The place was packed with a fun, mixed crowd, including couples hanging out, and groups of girls and guys having a night out. The Keltic Cowboys were providing live music, complete with bagpipes, which were getting everyone fired up. Besides the lively atmosphere, Rosie McCaffrey’s has the look and feel of an Irish pub, complete with dark wood booths arranged in slightly cramped quarters. The front of the bar was loud and crowded with Keltic Cowboys revelers, while the back of the bar housed the quieter drinkers. Supplementing Rosie’s personality is its array of authentic Irish beer and blended and single malt whiskeys. I’m going back for the drinks and the music, but next time I think I’ll try their famous Harp Battered Fish-in-Chips, too. For more information, go to www.rosiemccaffreys.com Night Owl News & Notes: Beyoncé is coming! Beyoncé is coming! Her 2009 ‘I AM...’ World Tour will be at the U.S. Airways center July 7th- tickets go on sale Saturday, April 25th; Great turnout at Pat’s Run last Saturday, nice work to everyone who participated; Cadillac Ranch in Tempe Marketplace has a pretty cool idea, offering a “when it rains, it pours” policy-- whenever it rains this Spring, they’ll offer $2 beers, $3 margaritas and $3 well drinks—too bad we don’t live in Seattle. Be safe, be a good person. Till next time…

author Darryl E. Robidoux clings to his vision of success, transcending despair, trauma, fear and failures, to reach the top of the corporate ladder. By 40, he is comfortably wealthy and retires from a prestigious position with Xerox.

Robidoux’s incredible journey inspires anyone who yearns to rise above their circumstances to achieve success on a level few could imagine. But Home After Dark is also a cautionary tale that graciously allows readers to learn from the author’s mistakes and misfortune. Robidoux’s success came with a price tag: losing the love of his life, the woman he describes as “the air of my lungs, the blood of my veins, the beat of my heart.” By sharing the intimate details of his unconventional life, Robidoux hopes others will find a path to their own dreams by accepting challenges, persevering through hazards, and not succumbing to societal and corporate pitfalls.

Audience Participation Key to Improvisational Theatre’s Success

National Comedy Theatre’s improvised comedy show is based on suggestions taken from the audience. Audience members have an opportunity to be a part of the action. The suggestions can be anything, like a word, emotion or location that the performers use to spontaneously tell a story or a joke. In

On Saturday, April 25th and Sunday, April 26th, the 17th Annual Arizona Women’s Expo, presented by SPARK Magazine, is back and will have a full line up of activities, exhibitions, and entertainment. Designed to meet the needs of a woman, the Expo is one of Arizona’s largest consumer trade shows and will take place at the University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale. Headlining the event will be the star of Lifetime Television’s How to Look Good Naked, Carson Kressley. Kressley is a former breakout star from Bravo’s Queer Eye for the Straight Guy, and is also a New York Times’ best-selling author. Kressley will be speaking about self-image and personal satisfaction.

Tired of bad food at large events? Diane M. Henderiks R.D, aka “Dietitian in the Kitchen,” will be headlining the Cooking Stage sponsored by the American Wholesale Club. Henderiks has appeared on CBS’ nationally broadcasted The Early Show, and will be demonstrating her skills on both days, as well as handing out True Lemon samples and giving a keynote speech on how to eat, shop, and live healthy. Also preparing tasty dishes, complete with samples, will be Robert “Chef Dad” Yedor and Frank Caputo. The cooking stage will be located on the North side of the stadium, next to the main entrance.

What about the Men?

Stylist Profile: Megan Low By Christine Capuano

If there is one thing Megan Low could accomplish that she already hasn’t it would probably be having more hours in the day to counteract her busy schedule. The Arizona State University sophomore spends her days taking courses in Tempe, working at Scottsdale Fashion Square’s Betsey Johnson store, styling photo shoots, modeling for London-based salon Vidal Sassoon, painting, and making music. Megan is a girl you will never forget after meeting her just one time. She is an instant bolt of energy and is guaranteed to bring a smile to your face. Growing up in Petaluma, California, she dedicated 99% of her time to gymnastics from the time she was 12-years-old until the beginning of high school. After foregoing her dream of becoming an Olympic gymnast, she spent the next couple of years establishing her other life interests. These days it seems as if the real question that remains is, what isn’t she good at? She quickly became known as the girl who was full of surprises; she was the first in her high school to rock spandex as pants, and nowadays you will find her wearing anything from lavish ruffled baby rompers to high-waisted pants and whatever one-of-a-kind vintage finds she can get her hands on. After working for The Blue Jean Buyer on Scottsdale Road for nearly a year, she began receiving more and more offers to help personal shop and even style for customers. “It’s not socially acceptable for a 20 year old to play with Barbies, so I play stylist instead,” she confides. “I recently styled a photo shoot for Natalie Mejia, a performer in the band ‘Girlicious’. That was a lot of fun, we played with my vintage Betsey Johnson collection. My next project is a minimalist photo shoot for Vidal Sassoon.” Her inspiration comes from accomplished designers like Marc Jacobs, Alexander Wang, Karl Lagerfeld, Yves Saint Laurent, Diane Von Furstenberg, and of course, Betsey Johnson.

34

April 23rd - April 29th, 2009

If she could get her hands on one person, anyone in the world, to help transform their style, ironically Megan says, “My math teacher! I envision him as the nerdy, Banana Republic and Wayfarer lenses wearing type. He’s a babe and he doesn’t even know it.” The fashion enthusiast says she would have to name Jen Brill or supermodel Kate Moss as the best dressed women in the world. Also, she adds, “I hate to say it, but Rihanna has got some style. But I’m not saying that because I sold her a jumpsuit at Betsey Johnson and we have the same hair (I cut mine first).” Megan is currently majoring in art intermedia at ASU’s main campus. “I have switched more times than I would like to admit, but I think I’ll plant my butt here for good,” she says. When not spending her time submerged in the fashion world, you can find her glued to Discovery Channel’s Shark Week. As for her favorite places to shop, apparently Arizona does not have enough retail for her personal-style. “I live in Arizona; therefore I shop online,” she says. Her favorite style city is Denmark. “I’m really obsessed with Denmark’s street scene,” she says. “Think: high-waisted slacks and side ponytails.” Although Arizona might not be quite as swanky, Megan has no problem bringing styles from Denmark, New York, LA, San Francisco, and just about anywhere else and displaying them on the streets of Tempe! “You must do what you love,” Megan says. “The plan is to move to San Francisco after I get my degree and become a costume designer for movie sets and high fashion photo shoots. Until then, Tempe will do just fine.”

Review and photo by Chad Haire

If you want an updated version of the Dodge Durango, the Chrysler Aspen is just that. The base engine is a 4.7 liter V-8, but to pull this weight, you should get the optional 5.7 Hemi like I did. Gas mileage is rated at 1520mpg, which is what I got. The Aspen is pleasant to drive on the street thanks to a smooth ride, firm brakes, and nice steering feel. Off-road driving wasn’t as pleasant, as the ground clearance was too low to clear big rocks. My

Trucks and Imports

Aspen was two-wheel drive. Perhaps the four-wheel drive rigs have more clearance and better tires. The base vehicle starts at about $30,000, though mine was $39,655 with trimmings. With the big discounts being given, you should be able to get one for far less. If you need a large SUV to haul your buddies around, this one may be for you.

characters. These zealous fans were members of the United Federation of Phoenix, which is the oldest Star Trek and science fiction fan organization in the southwest and the second oldest in the United States.

By Christine Capuano Ronald Wimmer wakes up hours before the Arizona Science Center opens to apply makeup, paste on prosthetic ears, and put the finishing touches on his Spock uniform before spending the day volunteering at the exhibit enlightening fans about Star Trek’s captivating legacy. ‘Star Trek the Exhibition’ has united Trekkies from numerous generations, backgrounds, and geographical locations to explore the world’s most complex collection of authentic Star Trek memorabilia. From those who grew up watching Star Trek, to young children, college students, and even those who are presently active members in Arizona’s Star Trek fan clubs, people from all over the Valley came out to take part in the convention.

“It was founded by a group of high school and college students in 1975 who returned from a California Star Trek convention enthused by the prospect of forming a club,” said Jim Strait, the contact for the club. “Many met at the convention for the first time and they formed connections based on many differing attributes of the others. They planned it out over the summer making and putting out flyers and planning the first meeting for Sept. 8th, 1975. The club has been meeting regularly since.” “Believe it or not, I actually learned to read from the Star Trek manual,” Wimmer said. “My mom used to get so annoyed with me because I would always ask her, ‘What does this word mean?’ that finally she just said, ‘You need to learn for yourself!’”

When entering the exhibit it was impossible not to notice those dressed head to toe in costume, some even taking on the actual persona of original

Spinal Tap – Not Just Pretty Faces

Spinal Tap is a semi-fictional heavy metal band, the subject of the 1984 mockumentary This Is Spinal Tap. The band members are portrayed by Michael McKean (as David St. Hubbins), Christopher Guest (as Nigel Tufnel) and Harry Shearer (as Derek Smalls). The same trio of actors would be reunited as the American folk music revival band The Folksmen in the 2003 mockumentary A Mighty Wind. This trio has created an interesting yet bizarre mix of reality and parody in everything about them, which has invoked a strange yet devout following. Many popular culture idioms have been spawned from the group and the movie. For example, “Up to 11” has been included in the Shorter Oxford English Dictionary. For those who like to mix fiction with reality, the trio will be performing, sans wigs and electricity, Spinal Tap and Folksmen repertoires on Monday, April 27th at the Dodge Theatre (400 W. Washington St. in Phoenix). Visit www.livenation.com for more information.

Sage Gentle-Wing (Acoustic/Electric Guitar) www.sagegentle-wing.com

Why or how did you get started in Music? I was born to do it. Do you play cover tunes or originals? I’ve been playing all original music since 1987, but lately I have been adding some choice eclectic rock covers. How would you describe your style of music? John Lennon playing guitar like Michael Hedges. There is a Dylan/Beatles flavor with jazz and blues underpinnings couched in an altered tuning British Isles 60’s troubadour thing. Are you any good? Well, I’ve done my own thing for 40 years and I’m still alive and kickin’ so, yes. Very. How would you classify your music? 60’s pop/ rock/folk/blues/jazz. There is no classification that truly fits, but lots of people think it’s Americana. Maybe that’s because I’m an American and have spent my whole life on the road? You could call it “story-driven” too. Name one thing that you hope to accomplish during your musical career. Successfully touring under my own name behind worldwide recognition

How often do you perform live? Generally two to three times a week. What’s the funniest thing that ever happened while performing? I was playing in a deli on Mill Avenue back in the 90’s. This hot, young, nearly naked girl came up and started making out heavy with TWO guys at once right in front of me while I was trying to play. They were really getting nasty, and the entire restaurant just stood there staring with dropped jaws, just watching the show. NOBODY wanted to stop them but the owner finally kicked them out. What do you do different that sets you apart from other performers? I’ve played only original solo acoustic material for a living for the past 20 years, without a label, agent, manager, or band. I lived in my van for 23 years in order to do it wherever and whenever I wanted, and I toured New Zealand for 5 months on my own back in 2000. Tell us a secret: I’m all five members in one body. Wait, that didn’t come out right… What advice would you give a startup band? First, play the music that’s inside you. Discover it, write it, play it, share it. That’s your true gift. Add something to the world that wasn’t there before you came along. Second, just be an entertainer.

You can be both but they are really two different animals What’s the biggest misconception people have about musicians? The myth of the fabulously-wealthy rock star living a fabulously debauched lifestyle. You don’t have to be famous or wealthy to be debauched. What’s the most difficult aspect of trying to make it in this biz? Making enough money to keep it all going. I do this full time, but entirely on my own steam. So maybe the hardest part is getting someone to invest in your dream. What will people see when you perform live? 40 years of dedication to craft and a life deeply lived and shared through that craft, also, more than craft; the indefinable element of a person’s energy. Got any CDs out that we might buy? Yes, Roadside Revelations. You can pick it up at Cd baby (www.cdbaby.com), iTunes, and always at my shows. Do you have any upcoming shows that we should know about? I’m at the McDowell Mountain Music Festival on April 24th the Kozy Cactus April 25th, and Hazelwood’s on April 26th. You can really find me all around town. My schedule is always available at www.sagegentle-wing.com.
