Six-week Fund-raising Campaign Will Support Valley Arts, Cultural Groups A six-week web-based pilot fund-raising campaign based on the concept that many small donations add up to big dollars launches May 1 to raise money for the Valley’s 16 largest arts and cultural organizations. The campaign ends June 15. If it’s successful, the concept will be used in the fall for a statewide campaign for more than 300 arts and cultural organizations. “This truly is an experiment,” said Bob Delgado of Hensley & Company who, with Mike Cohn of CFG Business Solutions, came up with the idea. “Our goal is to help arts and cultural organizations weather the current economic downturn through many contributions as small as $10. As an experiment, there are no guarantees. We have no predetermined financial goal. We’ll judge the effort based on how much money is raised at the end of six weeks.” Delgado and Cohn hope to engage at least 10% of the state’s 1.2 million arts supporters to make tax-deductible contributions starting at $10 through the web site, MyArtsCommunity.org. “There is a real sense of urgency because the economy has taken its toll,” Cohn said. “Donations are down significantly and fundraising events are not producing the kind of results we’ve seen in recent years.”

Now it’s your turn to perform. No one has to remind you about the current economic crisis. But you may not be aware that the Valley’s arts and cultural organizations have been hit especially hard by budget cuts and are now in urgent need of our financial support. With a nominal donation of $10, $25, $50 or $100, you can participate in the Valley’s largest arts and cultural organizations at

a whole new level and help these valuable local assets endure these difficult times. Please visit MyArtsCommunity.org before June 15 to make your donation or call 602-682-2057 for more information or to pay by check. Help keep your local arts and cultural community alive.

Visitors to the web site will use a drop-down function to select either the organization they wish to donate to or an undesignated fund for later distribution. Donors also can pay by check. Donations will be held in a special account at the Arizona Community Foundation. Arts and cultural organizations chosen for the campaign were selected based on very strict criteria including, but not limited to, an operational budget of at least $1.5 million. They include: Actors Theatre, Arizona Opera Company, Arizona Science Center, Arizona Theatre Company, Ballet Arizona, Childsplay, Desert Botanical Garden, Free Arts of Arizona, Heard Museum, Mesa Arts Center, Phoenix Art Museum, Phoenix Symphony Association, Phoenix Theater, The Phoenix Zoo, Scottsdale Cultural Council, West Valley Arts Council and an undesignated fund. The best internationally acclaimed Wild West musical stage show just opened at the Broadway Palm in Mesa! Marshal Pioneer Pepper and the Sunset Pioneers just rode in to the Pioneer Room at the Palm, bringing the old opera house of the Arizona West back to life in exciting fashion! Led by the jokes and antics of the good Marshal, these Sunset Pioneers were ready to show why they have been acclaimed throughout the world with their music and fun of the old west! This wonderful era of the singing cowboy will never be forgotten due to the talent and dynamics they bring to this fantastic show! Complimenting Pioneer Pepper, who plays Fender guitar, are Professor Rowland, the three time U.S. fiddle champion. The Professor showed everyone why he’s the best show stopper since Wild Bill, with his rendition of the “Orange Blossom Special”. He was in good company with Doc Bellows on the Hohner accordion. Doc was exquisite on “Amazing Grace” and kept the classic hits soothing all night. Not to be

outdone were Private Lee on Banjo, who took the “Dueling Banjos” theme to new heights by playing both parts without a hitch! Bringing up the bass and poetry of this era in touching fashion was Dusty Cartwright on standing bass. Dusty was the glue of this harmonious group, and touched a heart or two with his cowboy poem “Reincarnation”. Add some trick roping, tap dancing, and yodeling to the menu, and you’re in for a great old west treat rarely seen anywhere in this country! With a song list from Gene Autry and Roy Rodgers in tow, these pioneers were just unstoppable with “Ride Cowboy Ride”, “Back In the Saddle”, “Red River Valley”, “Cool Waters”, “Tumbleweeds”, “Ghost Riders”, “Get Along Little Doggies”, “Old Mexico”, “Via Con Dios”, “El Paso”, “I Love You”, “Skyball Paint”, “Rawhide”, and of course the feel good “Happy Trails”.

Dance like the Stars! Lindy Hop classes offered in the Valley

Phoenix- The Arizona Lindy Hop Society is now offering classes to anyone that may want to learn the Lindy Hop, the original swing dance that started over 80 years ago in the ballrooms of Harlem, NY. “The Lindy is a lot of fun for all ages and does not have to have tricky airsteps or flips to be fun,” says founder Steve Conrad. “We have a place to go out social dancing nearly every night of the week and it is the new generation of swing dancers that keep this dance alive.” The Lindy Hop is a part of American history. Born in Harlem in the late 1920’s and named after Charles Lindbergh, or Lucky Lindy, as he was known, “hopped” across the Atlantic ocean flying from New York to Paris. Today, Lindy hop is thriving around the world with swing dance communities in nearly every major U.S. city, and in places such as Bejing, Moscow, Vietnam, Singapore, Japan,

and Australia, to name a few. In Arizona there is a place to go out and try swing dancing (Lindy hop, Jitterbug, and East Coast Swing) nearly every night of the week. Plus, new group Lindy Hop classes are now being offered at Fatcat Ballroom in Phoenix. Every Sunday afternoon at the Fatcat Ballroom, at 3131 E. Thunderbird Rd. in Phoenix, learn how to Lindy Hop for $10 per class! 3:00pm: Lindy Hop Intermediate 4:00pm: Lindy Hop Beginning 5:00pm: East Coast Swing Intermediate/Advanced For more information about Lindy Hop and Swing Dancing in Arizona, log onto www.AZLindy.com

The Terrians have no idea that the last inhabitants of Earth have exhausted the resources of their planet, and those of three others, and that they are now searching for a new home by roaming the universe in a Battlestar Galactica-like armada. Finding the planet Terra and deciding to claim the planet, the Earthlings launch an invasion. Mala’s father, Roven (Dennis Quaid), is kidnapped during the assault. With the hope of saving her father, Mala captures an injured human pilot named Jim (Luke Wilson). As Mala nurses Jim back to health, a friendship and mutual respect of the differences of the two races develops. As they attempt to put into motion a plan that could save both the human race and the planet of Terra, they realize that peace will not come easily. With the power of the Terraformer on one side, along with the quest for power and dominance, it seems doubtful either race will survive. Directed by Aristomenis Tsirbas, written by Evan Spiliotopoulos; Lionsgate / Roadside Attractions release; Rated PG for sequences of sci-fi action violence and some thematic elements. His dream, along with a couple of his close friends, is to make it to the United States and the big leagues so that he can pull himself and his family out of poverty. Playing professionally at a baseball academy in the Dominican Republic, Miguel finally gets his break at 19 when he gets the call to go on to the United States’ minor leagues. His integration in the U.S. goes well until he runs into that normal slump that athletes have. Sugar begins to question the single-mindedness of his life’s ambition and if he has the skills and mental temperament to succeed. Sugar is an interesting view through the eyes of a boy who only speaks a few words of English, of our country, sports, and the drive to succeed. About half of the film is in Spanish with English subtitles, and features incredible great photography.

As the studios continue the trend of ‘back to the beginning’, Hugh Jackman returns in the role that made him a superstar. He’s the fierce fighting machine who possesses amazing healing powers, retractable claws, and a primal fury. X-Men Origins: Wolverine gives us the back story of the namesake’s violent and romantic past, his complex relationship with Victor Creed (Liev Schreiber), and the Weapon X program. Know Thy Grape: Occasion, Folks Define Wine Choice By Nathan Mears

Choosing the “correct” wines for a casual party, elegant dinner, or family gathering can be a daunting task for some. As much as it would please my mother, a rocket scientist I am not; therefore, if I can do this, so can you. When selecting the wine, most people focus on the food; however it isn’t the only thing to consider – it’s just the most discussed. Your event and the people who will be sharing the wine are just as important and need to be considered. An intimate evening is a good time for those really special wines. The flavors, aromas, and textures delivered by a great Red Burgundy, Russian River Valley Chardonnay, or Washington State Syrah evoke emotions the wine drinkers share, and create an even more memorable night. For a completely different scenario, like the neighborhood barbecue, you need to look for drinkability; something tasty but not thought-provoking. A juicy Spanish Garnacha, simple New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc, or dare I suggest something with bubbles, perhaps an Italian Prosecco, would all be good choices.

These two occasions to share wine represent opposite ends of the spectrum, and there are many more spanning the scale. The next time you are picking out wine for an event, first think about where it lies on this ‘social scale’. And remember, if you would prefer someone else do the wine selecting, stop in to your favorite wine shop and let them do it for you; they’ll make you look like a star. Next week we can look at the incredibly subjective world of food and wine pairing, until then, Cheers!

5 Valley Cinco de Mayo Parties Worth a ‘Woo-Hoo’! Many transients who make the Valley their current residence are thankful for the numerous benefits that southwestern culture provides: The Food- that spicy bean/rice/meat/ pepper/salsa combo never fails to invigorate the palate. The Booze- top shelf tequilas in mouth-watering, customized margaritas are popular selling points at too many places to count in the Valley. The Nude- sun + more sun + outdoor patios + drink specials = less clothing = everyone happy. All of these features of life in Arizona come together within the greatest southwestern perk of all; Cinco de Mayo, that über holiday that has superseded Christmas as the

celebration that has made most irrelevant the source of its existence due to the scope of its excesses. Mexican Independence? Day of the Dead? Yeah, right. This day is all about partying, and Mexican and Beach- themed restaurants in the area mark it on their calendar with as much reverence and anticipation as pubs in Ireland denote March 17th. This May 5th, if you are in the mood to throw down with a vigorous AYYYYAYYYY- AYYYYY and a commitment to unobstructed partying, check out the following options:

Los Sombreros Mexican Café & Cantina

Sizzling $5 specials all day, including mojitos, margaritas, wines, and select food items will bring Los Sombreros to life on May 5th. Named one of America’s Top Restaurants by the 2008 and 2009 Zagat Guidebook and Food and Wine’s “Go List 2007,” this

award-winning eatery is nationally known for its menu of authentic Mexican and South American cuisine. 2534 N. Scottsdale Rd., Scottsdale (480) 994-1799 www.lossombreros.com

With two huge patios, a plethora of outside and inside bars, old-fashion flatiron grill, killer margs at ridiculously low prices, succulent Mexican cuisine, and a full-size bocce ball court, your coolest Aunt is set to host a hum-dinger on May 5th.

San Felipe’s Cantina

With a new location in Desert Ridge, this Valley icon of the authentic coastal experience is doubly amped to bring in Cinco de Mayo with a stellar lineup of food and drink specials. Beach décor like a DJ booth that looks like a life guard tower, and a life-sized great white shark, emanates from San Felipe’s interior, surrounding patrons in a good-time vision unlike any other. Among the more enticing treats are $2 Tecate and Dos Equis drafts, and $3 Horniots Plata tequila margaritas.

Padre’s Modern Mexican Cuisine

The Night Owl If you have an entertainment event or item to include in “The Night Owl” send to brent.diggins@azweeklymagazine.com “The Night Owl” will cover restaurants, clubs, bars, celebrities, music and other miscellaneous events.

BY BRENT DIGGINS AND EFIA MOORE “So can you drink on the job?” People ask me that frequently when I am attending an event, concert, bar or club. My answer? “What’s my muthafreakin’ name?” The Night Owl; that’s right, and that gives me the right—really the obligation--to drink on the job. That is what I do! How good of a journalist would I be if I went to a bar and didn’t have a drink? On that note, Cinco de Mayo is coming up and I have some well-researched places for you to get margaritas, plus a review of the McDowell Mountain Music Festival. For all that happened, is happening, and will happen in the Valley; read on! MMMF Review: Ah, it came and went and what an event it was; The McDowell Mountain Music Festival. Set in the shadow of the McDowell Mountains at West World, this year’s festival was another winner and was certainly one of the best in the MMMF legacy. Why? First, the weather was terrific; a little windy at times, but nothing to complain about. The days were idyllic and the nights cool enough so that a light long sleeve t-shirt would do. The music, you ask? Spectacular. The line-up was made up of music festival veterans, and the type of bands, whether you knew them or not, that made you bob your head, stamp your feet, and clap your hands. Additionally, the homage paid and opportunity given to local acts is a decision that says something wonderful about the organizers of the event. Finally, as always, the people who run this festival know what the hell they are doing. From their logistics to set-up to choice of bands, it was all excellent, and is the reason why the MMMF is near the top of my list of annual Phoenix events. Here’s a break down: The Music: Music was stellar all around from the main stage all the way to the party tent and acoustic stage. At all times, on some stage, a band—good bands—were performing. Some highlights of my weekend included The Riders of the Purple Sage, who have the Grateful Dead vibe (they toured with Jerry Garcia and boys after all, and Jerry was once a member) that is the seed behind festivals across the world; Michael Franti and Spearhead, who has a great sound and are clear festival professionals, may have been the stars of the weekend with their dynamic and energy-infused set; the Flaming Lips’ effort was one of the best I’ve ever seen, as their on-stage antics and set-up including a giant Ferris wheellight structure and zany fans dressed in a variety of costumes (infamous bunny suits were one-ofa-kind); Railroad Earth’s sound was excellent and although I had not seen them before this festival, I’ll definitely put their future shows on the calendar; local bands Haven James, Delcoa, What Laura Says and Peachcake all were spectacular and brought their “A” game to the festival—you need to check them all out if you haven’t already.

Cinco De Mayo: Lately I’ve done extensive research on margaritas. My usual cocktail of choice is a simple and refreshing short gin and tonic with two limes, but realizing that Cinco de Mayo is right around the corner, I changed up recently to bring you some insight on margaritas. Thankfully my search for the perfect margarita hasn’t been in vain, allowing me to share with you the best places to enjoy margaritas for Cinco de Mayo. Here are some of my favorite places in the Valley to celebrate with “‘Ms. Rita’” this Cinco: Los Dos Molinos: With a wait that rivals Phoenix’s Pizzeria Bianco (okay not really, but you know what I mean), most guests are left to enjoy the inexpensive pitchers of margaritas. A quaint dining room and large, airy patio make their Mexican mixer taste that much better. As a nightlife aficionado, I must warn you to go with a group of three or more, just like Los Dos Molinos’ food; the pitchers of margaritas are made for sharing. losdosmolinosaz.com Padres Modern Mexican Cuisine: This little Phoenix jewel offers guests fine dinning, dancing, live music, happy hour, and refreshing twists on the classic cocktail. Remixes of the margarita include the “Patrón,” “Pomegranate,” “Waborita,” and the “Holy Grail,” which mixes Patrón Platinum, Gran Marnier, and Remy Martin VSOP to earn it its title. Padre’s takes its happy hour as serious as its margaritas, offering a menu for under $8 4 – 6:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. padresmexican.com Dos Gringos: A great place to mix and mingle, Dos Gringos does the patio bar right. It’s no wonder the Night Owl is a fan of its signature “gringorita.” No matter if I’m in the Scottsdale, Tempe, Chandler, or Mesa location I can still enjoy the laid back Dos Gringo’s party atmosphere. The cheap and satisfying happy hour menu and great drink specials throughout the week make Dos a popular watering hole for everyday, especially Cinco de Mayo. dosgringosaz.com Macayo’s: The friendly atmosphere and unbeatable drink specials draw me in, and the huge mugs of margaritas make me stay. Known throughout the Valley for its tasty Mexican food, Macayo’s is a great spot to start the night. On Cinco De Mayo, Macayos will have $6.25 20-ounce grande margaritas and $5.00 Corona and Pacifico bombers. macayo.com Be safe, be a good person. Till next time…

Blue Martini: CityNorth’s Versatile Playground

Scottsdale- Like the modern new CityNorth in which it resides, Blue Martini is an other-worldly place that seemingly materialized out of thin air in February. Offering a colorfully refined, diverse concept made popular by designer and CEO Mark Vasu within its predecessors across the country, the new location is already packed from happy hour ‘till close on a nightly basis. “We opened like a powerhouse, and it’s only getting better,” says GM Dallas Henderson. “City North is really starting to take its role in the community; there is a lot of big stuff going on and its flowing down to us. In the first few weeks we were developing regulars.” Blue Martini escapes easy classification. “It’s not a lounge, not an ultra lounge, not a nightclub, not a restaurant; it’s an upscale, friendly local establishment,” Henderson explains. The description he gives is telling: This versatile operation can’t be summed up by breaking it down into its separate components, which it offers in an elegant denial of gaudiness and gratuitous imagery. “All of the sconces and lamps, some of the other fixtures, are designed for homes, not commercial real estate,” he says, alluding to Blue Martini’s inescapable intimacy. From the outdoor patio and bar area, with its wicker and stone trimmings and spacious layout, guests are enticed to flow inward to a multi-leveled, mutlilit, multi-finished interior that is split into an elevated VIP bar and lounge, and a descended dance floor with its own bar and prominently displayed DJ booth. Blue Martini is truly everything for everyone, in the physical sense first, and then through its product and entertainment as well.

range from St Louis Style Spinach and Artichoke Dip to Bruschetta and Shrimp Martini; and there are choice flatbreads for those in the pie kind of way, like BBQ Chicken, Beef Tenderloin and Portabella, Margherita, and Classic Pepperoni. Happy hour is 4-7pm every day, when Chef Patrick Marinazzo features ½ prices on everything except specialty items. “The food is driving happy hour right now,” Henderson says. “We are offering 1/2 price on ALL the Food and most of the drinks except for the boutique wines and specialty liquors. Most people order food during happy hour because it’s such a fantastic bargain.” Specialty martinis include the namesake (Van Gogh blue vodka, Citronge, blue Curaçao, sour mix, orange juice, served in oversized snifter over ice with a glow stick) and others with colorful names like the Sex in the city, 007, and the Brazilian (Though $7 might seem a little stiff for some folks to pay for a drink at happy hour, Henderson says that 5 ounces of alcohol in each cocktail will help them appreciate the value they’re getting). For weekend fun beats, Henderson immediately secured the talents of local spin favorites Noah Wylie, Mikyl, and Soul Man. “These guys sell a room and figured out what we’re looking for,” says Henderson. “From Sunday to Tuesday, we do something a little different than the dance and Top 40 stuff, so we bring in western fusion bands, acoustic acts, jazz; I like to mix it up and keep energy in the room, and change it around for the crowd.” A magical layout, incredible cocktails, excellent, affordable food, and constant live entertainment have assured Blue Martini’s future success in the vast F & B Valley landscape. And unless you plan on popping a bottle or hosting a special event, don’t bother calling ahead for dinner reservations, advises Henderson. “Just get here around four-thirty or five if you want a good table, because we’ll be full by five-thirty!” Blue Martini 5455 E. PsykoSteve www.psykosteve.com

How did you get into the promotions/productions game? Give us the backstory…

I started promoting concerts as “Psyko Steve Presents” in 2000. Basically, I knew a lot of new bands that I thought were good and I knew the venues and other promoters, so I started to help those newer bands get in the shows they wanted to play. Then I was just doing a lot of shows myself putting together lineups I liked. Eventually national agents were coming to me with ideas. Nine years later I am still doing that. I have had the chance to work with some of my favorite artists like Thrice, Limbeck, The Cold War Kids, Motion City Soundtrack, and many more.

What are the attributes of the DJs/artists/ entertainers that you most like to work with?

Same question regarding those who are difficult to work with?

First off, they have to be good if they want to get noticed; be noteworthy. It’s really that simple. I am a music fan first, and when I see something I think is worthwhile, I am willing to bet others will see it too. Second, they have to work hard. I never want to feel like I am working harder for a band than they are willing to work for themselves. I am here to help bands get to the next level, not open doors and lay the red carpet for them to stroll through sweat free. Finally, they have to have their shit

24

April 30th - May 6th, 2009

together. It is the little things that make so much difference. It is amazing what a wellwritten email will do. And what some basic manors will do.

Artists who are not self-critical; who believe that they are doing something great when they aren’t. They will never be able to see what separates them from the artists who are where they wish they were. If that drive for self-improvement is not there, it never will be. And there is nothing you can do to help an act like this, so why even try? Finally, not having the basics covered can wreck a band. If one band member is a pain, I won’t take time to deal with them.

AZ WeeklyMagazine.com

What are your favorite 3 venues in the Valley?

First and foremost, Modified Arts. It is where I started doing shows, and it is the one venue I will always do shows at. I like that it is all about the music and art. At most places, music is just about getting people in the door to sell booze. It’s why so many of today’s best bands have played Modified before any other venue would take a chance on them; TV On The Radio, The Hold Steady, Alkaline Trio, Arcade Fire, Rilo Kiley, Vampire Weekend, and Fleet Foxes all played there early on. Then would have to be Rhythm Room and Chyro Arts, both great rooms to see new music.

Give us an idea of the risks vs. benefits that a potential client has to consider when you pitch him/her on a new event?

How do you sway that balance into your favor?

The advantage I have is a long track record of doing interesting events and helping great bands before they were popular. People are willing to take a chance on something I am doing most of the time because they know what I have done in the past. I can remember trying to beg bands to play with Avenged Sevenfold and Cold War Kids. I have acts tell me all the time they wish they would not have turned down this show or that show; they normally don’t pass up good things again. Also, people know that I am not just trying to make a buck; I really believe in all the events I am doing. A great number of acts know that I have never taken advantage of any act in this town, and that also goes a long way into convincing them that a show might worth the risk.

Scottsdale- On Thursday, April 30th, the Valley’s premier mixer queen, Raven Valdes, and her prolific production company, Raven Events, will be hosting a unique ‘Wahines’ night (ladies, in Hawaiian) at Trader Vic’s next to the Valley Ho in Scottsdale, from 6– 11pm. On this night, all the ladies will be treated to ½ off the ornate, colorful signature cocktails for which Trader Vic’s is famous (The guy invented the Mai Tai, for the love of Rum!). If you have never experienced the exotic South Pacific atmosphere and vibe of this remarkable establishment, now is your chance. Trader Vic’s features Polynesian fare and big tropical drinks with a unique modern island design that includes traditional tikis and outrigger canoes, but also adds new architectural elements such as floor to ceiling glass walls and curved walls to create a sense of fluid island life. Once you step inside, you’ll feel like you’re in a beautiful upscale lounge on a tropical island. If you’re ready for an after-work snack

or meal, Trader Vic’s will be offering all guests ½ off their delicious appetizer menu. If you want something more substantial, you’ve come to the right place. The chefs employ a variety of cooking methods, such as steaming, grilling using a wok, and slowly roasting delicacies in the Chinese wood fired oven. Pupu platters- offering an assortment of appetizers- and tidbits such as Barbeque Spare Ribs, Crab Rangoon, and Crispy Prawns top off the finger foods. Other favorites from the wood fired oven range from Rack of Lamb to Maple Leaf Duck Breast and Rib Eye Steaks. Along with traditional favorites, Trader Vic’s continues to add new specialties such as Hawaiian Ahi, Mahi Mahi and other fresh seafood.

Dana Eagle Mother’s Day, May 10th 4pm When this petite misfit in dark-rimmed glasses appeared with D.L. Hughley before an audience of 3,000, she summarized it all: “I used to think I liked myself but then I realized I was just using me to get to someone else.” For Dana Eagle, being a misfit has had its privileges; she found standup comedy, which led to appearances on Comedy Central’s Premium Blend, national commercials, and a host positions on the Oxygen Network. Every club owner asks to have her return. She gives the audience such a great energy and non-stop laughter, and they reflect it right back to her. This is one show not to be missed! Cards Nab Wells, Brown in 1st and 2nd Rounds

The Arizona Cardinals selected Ohio State RB Chris ‘Beanie’ Wells in last weekend’s NFL Draft with the 31st pick in the first round, then followed up with OLB Cody Brown out of Connecticut in the 2nd round with the 63rd pick overall. Finishing dead last in rushing yardage in 2008, Arizona is looking to balance out their prodigious passing game with some fresh legs in the backfield, and Wells is just the kind of bruising, physical back that can exploit defenses geared to stop weekly Red Bird air-raids. As an OSU alum, Wells is not unfamiliar with the Valley. In 2007, he was a member of the team that lost to Florida (bad) in

the National Championship Game at the University of Phoenix Stadium, and this past year he played his second game in Glendale when the Buckeyes lost to Texas in the Fiesta Bowl (not so bad). Wells came into college as one of the most highlytouted high school football players in recent memory, and immediately demonstrated his athleticism and skill as a ball carrier. 2008, however, found Wells marred by injuries, which dropped his draft stock despite an impressive ‘pro day’ workout in Columbus. If he comes into training camp healthy and can remain that way for the foreseeable future, grabbing him at #31 will be regarded as a steal, in retrospect. Brown is an impressive athlete who racked up 11 sacks and 18 tackles for loss in 13 games last season for the 8-5 Huskies

team that went on to win the International Bowl in January. Cards Coach Ken Whisenhunt is a defensiveminded skipper, and though the Cardinals were Super Bowl runner-ups last year, he and his coaching staff are intent on bolstering the defensive side of the ball for 2009. Bringing heat on the quarterback is an essential ingredient to making this happen. Last year, the Cardinals were ranked 14th in the NFL in sacks (average) and 22nd in the league against the pass (below average), so coaches and fans hope Brown will make an impact in improving those numbers. In Round 3, the Cardinals drafted S Rashad Johnson out of Alabama, and in Round 4 they took CB Greg Toler out of St. Paul’s.

Strengths: For his size, Wells possesses remarkable speed, and moreover has displayed breakaway speed once he gets past the second level of the defense. Great inside power and ability to stay on his feet after first contact. Rarely falls backward on tackles. Decent blocking ability due to his lower body strength. Effective stiff arm. Weaknesses: His toughness at the end of runs is a question mark. To make an impression on coaches, he’ll need to lower his shoulder against defenders instead of running out of bounds. Running style is too upright given his physicality, and could be the reason behind his susceptibility to injuries. Not a great pass catcher, but

LOOK! SECTION Arizona’s Own Supermodel By Christine Capuano Perry Ullmann is reminded of his loss on Bravo’s Make Me A Supermodel every time he checks his back account that is shy of the $100,000 the winner was promised. Ullmann, a graduate of Desert Mountain High School in Scottsdale, made it past thousands of hopeful applicants and fought his way to the final four contestants on the reality series last April. Although he is undeniably easy on the eyes and stands 6’1”, Ullmann grew up with dreams of a career that relied much more on his athletic abilities rather than his good looks. “I was gonna rescue dolphins, but apparently it’s a long training process, so I didn’t do that,” he

laughed, displaying a charming sense of humor. “No I’m just kidding. I went to a school in Chicago on a football and basketball scholarship for a semester, but after four knee surgeries I moved back to Arizona and went to Scottsdale Community College. After I enrolled in an acting class, I began ditching English and History every day and only showing up for acting class. That was it. I had found my passion.” To further his career and take a step in a more professional direction Ullmann signed up to take part in ProScout. ProScout is a national level scouting service as a program that helps aspiring actors and models get their careers launched. It is a weekend long convention that brings nearly every major modeling and acting agency under one roof, and if selected by one of their scouts, brings the talent face to face with them. Needless to say, Ullmann was selected and received 21 callbacks.

AZWeeklyMagazine.com

“I was so naive to the business,” he said. “But I nailed a starring role and then I didn’t work again for six months; that humbled me.” It was not long before the slow pace of Arizona’s entertainment market began to bore Ullmann. He decided to stick it out, and eventually landed the lead role on the CW’s new series Hidden Palms. “I was really excited,” said Ullmann. “I was working two jobs at the time. I quit both of them on the spot. A week later I decided to buzz my hair and lost the show. They told me, ‘You don’t look like a high-schooler anymore.’” It was just six months later that the feeling of impatience began to get the best of him once again. While working a desk job at a marketing firm one day, Ullmann decided he had had enough. He did not care about the amount of money he had saved up and just decided it was time for him and his girlfriend to finally make the big move to Los Angeles. When they first got there the couple stayed in Highland Park, which is not necessarily the safest area in the city. In fact, just a week before moving out, there was a on their street.

or even say the stars were aligned, but not too long after starting his bartending job Ullmann stumbled upon an advertisement on Myspace. com for Make Me A Supermodel audition. He decided to rush down there just five minutes before tryouts ended. “They told us we would find out a week later,” Ullmann said. “I wasn’t all that sure in the beginning. It was reality television, but I saw there was supposed to be good hosts so I thought maybe I would give it a shot.” Exactly a week later Ullmann received a call from Bravo! saying that they wanted to fly him to New York City for callbacks. He once again took the risk of instantly quitting his steady job and was on the next flight to Manhattan.

“It was really rocky,” Ullmann said. “We were staying out there with a girl I met over Craigslist, and ended up getting an eviction notice because of the dog. We were told we had just three days to find a place and it is so hard to find a place in L.A., especially on a weekend.” After staying in a hotel for a short while, the two were finally able to land on their feet. Although getting out there was initially pretty rough, Ullmann eventually landed a job as a bartender at a night club and began going on a few auditions in his spare time whenever he could. Some might call it beginner’s luck,

“Around Thanksgiving time they came to my apartment in Los Angeles with the cameras rolling and handed me

About 40 people showed up for callbacks, and the judges continued to cut down the competition. For those who watched the show, Ullmann can be remembered as the one who flirted shamelessly with supermodel Niki Taylor and instantly caught the attention of co-host, male supermodel Tyson Beckford, as the most impressive among the male talent.

an envelope that said, ‘Congrats!!! You’re gonna be on Make Me a Supermodel!’” Ullmann said. “It was definitely the craziest experience of my life. We were super secluded and shut off from the world. It was absolutely you against everyone else. I took advantage of everything I could because I knew it was a once in a lifetime opportunity. I told myself everyday once I leave this place I need to take everything I learned and be successful in this business, and not just modeling. I was always asking questions and soaking it all up. It’s not every day that you can go up to Tyson Beckford after the show and ask him questions. I was also a student, so aside from taking pictures, I kinda just utilized everything. I made friends...that part was inevitable. But I didn’t go there to make friends, because I knew in the end they wouldn’t be able to help me out.” After the show was over with it was not exactly back to reality for the 23-year-old L.A. resident. Just a day after the show ended he received a call from New York Model Management’s scout Corey Bautista asking him if he would like to be represented. Ullmann continues to land dream opportunities every day.

He booked numerous shows in NYC’s Fashion Week at Bryant Park, has done a few interviews in magazines, and has even appeared in music videos. He is also embracing his creative side and has begun writing television shows. “I met with a big network a few months ago, but both parties agreed it would not be the best fit,” Ullmann said. “However, hopefully we will find a right fit and begin filming soon. I have literally not been sleeping to make sure that this happens. Bottom line, I would like everyone to take from my story that you just have to continue to go for it because you only get closer each time. Anybody can do anything they want in life.”

I have driven all pickup trucks available, and of the entire lot, the Honda Ridgeline is my favorite. That is because of its versatility. Want a city commuter? This one delivers, with a smooth suspension that gives a soft ride, lots of interior room with four doors, and good gas mileage of 15-20 mpg. Want an off-road machine? This one delivers too, with all-wheel drive, 8.5 inches of ground clearance, a locking differential for rock climbing, a 1,650 pound payload and tow rating of 5,000 pounds. There is also a locking trunk in the bed that can hold 8.5 cubic feet of gear; a nice feature.

that can be raised about one foot. That’s right, this rig can go anywhere a four-door Jeep Wrangler can go, as we found out on some rough trails by the Arizona/Mexican border. Many Jeep owners were shocked to see a Lexus passing them by, but we did it. Afterwards, a trip to the car wash and then to a local country club where this Lexus was parked next to the Mercedes and BMW crowd and fit right in!

The only complaint was with gas mileage, as that potent 4.7 liter engine sucks premium fuel at 14-18 mpg. The base price of $47, 315 isn’t cheap either, and will hit about 55 grand with all options. But if you shop the used car market, a Lexus GX a few years old can be had for about half price, and if it has never been offroad, a better deal yet. Since this is a Toyota product, it will be running long after the warranty has expired, so this is a good buy, new or used.

Lexus GX - 470 If you are looking for a vehicle that can do everything, another versatile find is the Lexus GX - 470. Want a luxury rig? It delivers with power everything, dual-zone climate control, leather trim, stereo/CD system, and a long list of other goodies we don’t have room to print here. It’s good off road too, delivering two-speed transfer case, traction control, hill ascent/descent control, and a height adjustable suspension

Phoenix Author Has Goods on Girls Getaway

Firmly established in the 21st century, women have come so far, and yet have so far to go. For one thing, they still do too much, for too many, with too little time to do it in. They still come last, after their children, their husbands, and their bosses. But girls still just want to have fun, and busy women deserve vacations. What better way to get away than to really get away from it all, by leaving the husbands and kids behind,

AOA’s Oxford Knee System Relieves Osteoarthritis

Phoenix- Doctors at Arizona Orthopaedic Associates at Gateway are now performing partial knee replacements using the only fully mobile knee replacement system available in the United States. For many aging baby boomers, osteoarthritis will become their No. 1 concern as the years pass by. In a knee that suffers from osteoarthritis, the cartilage that normally acts as a shock absorber is damaged or sometimes completely missing. Associates, because it only replaces one side of the knee, removing 75% less bone. It replaces the damaged or missing meniscus cartilage with a free-floating bearing that replicates the purpose of the meniscus. The procedure is less painful, allows for a faster recovery, and results in a more natural walking motion. AOA surgeons have used the Oxford partial knee replacement for more than 300 surgeries and are encouraged by the results. “Many times a patient suffering from knee pain does not need a total knee replacement,” said AOA orthopedic surgeon David M. Ott, M.D. “The Oxford Knee allows us to treat the area

Scottsdale- The 6th Annual Frasher’s Steakhouse & Lounge Charity golf tournament is almost here. Held at the Raven Club at South Mountain on Monday, May 25th, this event has gained a reputation for

outrageous fun since its inception. As the crew at Frasher’s looks forward to another successful year, a look back is also in order. The tournament last year was far and away the most successful to date. With the help of all who donated, participated, and volunteered, they raised over $5000 for the LMSarcoma Direct Research Foundation by way of the Misty Morgan Memorial Fund.

Misty Morgan was a member of the Frasher’s family who lost her four year battle with LMS at the age of 32. All of the money raised went to a team of researchers at Stanford University who are working toward finding a cure. Leiomyosarcoma is an extremely rare and aggressive form of cancer that attacks the connective or supportive tissue of the body, including bone, fat, muscle, cartilage, and blood vessels. There is no cure for LMS…. Yet. Generous donations last year were an integral part of the

tournament’s success. The raffle and silent auction were the biggest fundraisers. Those at Frasher’s and the LMSDR appreciate your help and hope that you will continue to support the tournament and help them make the ‘09 outing an even bigger success. For more information on how you can organize your own foursome or join one, please contact tournament coordinator Derek Baker at dbakes27@yahoo.com.

Phoenix– The First Friday Art Walk in Downtown Phoenix will feature a musical exhibition like none other on the globe, when the unclassifiable sounds of Mr. Meeble, Mondegreen, and Back Ten ‘n Ted collide and cohere outside the art saturated confines of the Lost Leaf Bar and Gallery on May 1st, starting at 630pm, with spin sets throughout the evening provided by The Boom Kidz. This foursome will produce a filling, night-long blend of melody guacamole that is made up of experimental pop, techno-punk fusion, and electronica with rock trimmings, all set to the

beguiling, entrancing stream of dream sequences and visual bytes that will be played on state of the art projectors for all to see. Brought to you by premier party promoter Jen Deveroux, this free show is set to be First Friday’s centerpiece of activity. Mr. Meeble is soulful harmony and reflective unrest incarnate, whose mesmerizing loops combine with scratches, glitches, and stutters in a holy testimony to naked imagination. Their performance will be the last North American show before taking off for a European tour. Back Ted ‘n Ted is on the neverending hunt for far-reaching transitions within spellbinding, sweeping torrents of trance and house motifs, at first engaging then carrying the listener to the blissful center of self. Baby Boomers Remember The Who

Peoria- “From “My Generation” to “Pinball Wizard” to “Behind Blue Eyes” to “You Better You Bet” to “Won’t Get Fooled Again”, The Who Show has been thrilling baby boomer audiences with the unmistakable live sounds of The Who for more than a decade. The Who show was also voted VH1’s “Most Believable 1970’s Era Who Tribute”. With note for note musical renditions, authentic costumes and vintage instruments, The Who Show recreates a Who concert experience from the 1970s. On stage, the group accurately captures the “individual stage personas, idiosyncrasies and showmanship” of one of the most influential bands and perhaps the greatest live band ever. While many tribute bands duplicate the appearance and sound, The Who Show, “takes the extra step to capture the magic, energy and essence of the Who”. They are appearing in The Platinum Room at Skye (16844 N. Arrowhead Fountain Center Dr. in Peoria) on Friday, May 1st and Saturday, May 2nd. Tickets are available at www.skye.ticketforce.com.
