Six-week Fund-raising Campaign Will Support Valley Arts, Cultural Groups A six-week web-based pilot fund-raising campaign based on the concept that many small donations add up to big dollars launches May 1 to raise money for the Valley’s 16 largest arts and cultural organizations. The campaign ends June 15. If it’s successful, the concept will be used in the fall for a statewide campaign for more than 300 arts and cultural organizations. “This truly is an experiment,” said Bob Delgado of Hensley & Company who, with Mike Cohn of CFG Business Solutions, came up with the idea. “Our goal is to help arts and cultural organizations weather the current economic downturn through many contributions as small as $10. As an experiment, there are no guarantees. We have no predetermined financial goal. We’ll judge the effort based on how much money is raised at the end of six weeks.” Delgado and Cohn hope to engage at least 10% of the state’s 1.2 million arts supporters to make tax-deductible contributions starting at $10 through the web site, MyArtsCommunity.org. “There is a real sense of urgency because the economy has taken its toll,” Cohn said. “Donations are down significantly and fundraising events are not producing the kind of results we’ve seen in recent years.”

The best internationally acclaimed Wild West musical stage show just opened at the Broadway Palm in Mesa! Marshal Pioneer Pepper and the Sunset Pioneers just rode in to the Pioneer Room at the Palm, bringing the old opera house of the Arizona West back to life in exciting fashion! Led by the jokes and antics of the good Marshal, these Sunset Pioneers were ready to show why they have been acclaimed throughout the world with their music and fun of the old west! This wonderful era of the singing cowboy will never be forgotten due to the talent and dynamics they bring to this fantastic show! Complimenting Pioneer Pepper, who plays Fender guitar, are Professor Rowland, the three time U.S. fiddle champion. The Professor showed everyone why he’s the best show stopper since Wild Bill, with his rendition of the “Orange Blossom Special”. He was in good company with Doc Bellows on the Hohner accordion. Doc was exquisite on “Amazing Grace” and kept the classic hits soothing all night. Not to be
outdone were Private Lee on Banjo, who took the “Dueling Banjos” theme to new heights by playing both parts without a hitch! Bringing up the bass and poetry of this era in touching fashion was Dusty Cartwright on standing bass. Dusty was the glue of this harmonious group, and touched a heart or two with his cowboy poem “Reincarnation”. Add some trick roping, tap dancing, and yodeling to the menu, and you’re in for a great old west treat rarely seen anywhere in this country! With a song list from Gene Autry and Roy Rodgers in tow, these pioneers were just unstoppable with “Ride Cowboy Ride”, “Back In the Saddle”, “Red River Valley”, “Cool Waters”, “Tumbleweeds”, “Ghost Riders”, “Get Along Little Doggies”, “Old Mexico”, “Via Con Dios”, “El Paso”, “I Love You”, “Skyball Paint”, “Rawhide”, and of course the feel good “Happy Trails”.

Dance like the Stars! Lindy Hop classes offered in the Valley
Phoenix- The Arizona Lindy Hop Society is now offering classes to anyone that may want to learn the Lindy Hop, the original swing dance that started over 80 years ago in the ballrooms of Harlem, NY. “The Lindy is a lot of fun for all ages and does not have to have tricky airsteps or flips to be fun,” says founder Steve Conrad. “We have a place to go out social dancing nearly every night of the week and it is the new generation of swing dancers that keep this dance alive.” The Lindy Hop is a part of American history. Born in Harlem in the late 1920’s and named after Charles Lindbergh, or Lucky Lindy, as he was known, “hopped” across the Atlantic ocean flying from New York to Paris. Today, Lindy hop is thriving around the world with swing dance communities in nearly every major U.S. city, and in places such as Bejing, Moscow, Vietnam, Singapore, Japan,
and Australia, to name a few. In Arizona there is a place to go out and try swing dancing (Lindy hop, Jitterbug, and East Coast Swing) nearly every night of the week. Playing professionally at a baseball academy in the Dominican Republic, Miguel finally gets his break at 19 when he gets the call to go on to the United States’ minor leagues. His integration in the U.S. goes well until he runs into that normal slump that athletes have. Sugar begins to question the single-mindedness of his life’s ambition and if he has the skills and mental temperament to succeed. universe whose appearances in the film series have long been anticipated.
As the studios continue the trend of ‘back to the beginning’, Hugh Jackman returns in the role that made him a superstar. He’s the fierce fighting machine who possesses amazing healing powers, retractable claws, and a primal fury. X-Men Origins: Wolverine gives us the back story of the namesake’s violent and romantic past, his complex relationship with Victor Creed (Liev Schreiber), and the Weapon X program. Choosing the “correct” wines for a casual party, elegant dinner, or family gathering can be a daunting task for some. As much as it would please my mother, a rocket scientist I am not; therefore, if I can do this, so can you. When selecting the wine, most people focus on the food; however it isn’t the only thing to consider – it’s just the most discussed. Your event and the people who will be sharing the wine are just as important and need to be considered. An intimate evening is a good time for those really special wines. The flavors, aromas, and textures delivered by a great Red Burgundy, Russian River Valley Chardonnay, or Washington State Syrah evoke emotions the wine drinkers share, and create an even more memorable night. For a completely different scenario, like the neighborhood barbecue, you need to look for drinkability; something tasty but not thought-provoking. A juicy Spanish Garnacha, simple New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc, or dare I suggest something with bubbles, perhaps an Italian Prosecco, would all be good choices.
These two occasions to share wine represent opposite ends of the spectrum, and there are many more spanning the scale. The next time you are picking out wine for an event, first think about where it lies on this ‘social scale’. And remember, if you would prefer someone else do the wine selecting, stop in to your favorite wine shop and let them do it for you; they’ll make you look like a star. Tempe- Last weekend, the newest Regions Bistro & Bar officially celebrated its new digs on the busy southwest corner of Mill Avenue and 6th Street with a grand opening celebration. BY BRENT DIGGINS AND EFIA MOORE “So can you drink on the job?” People ask me that frequently when I am attending an event, concert, bar or club. My answer? “What’s my muthafreakin’ name?” The Night Owl; that’s right, and that gives me the right—really the obligation--to drink on the job. That is what I do! How good of a journalist would I be if I went to a bar and didn’t have a drink? On that note, Cinco de Mayo is coming up and I have some well-researched places for you to get margaritas, plus a review of the McDowell Mountain Music Festival. For all that happened, is happening, and will happen in the Valley; read on! MMMF Review: Ah, it came and went and what an event it was; The McDowell Mountain Music Festival. Set in the shadow of the McDowell Mountains at West World, this year’s festival was another winner and was certainly one of the best in the MMMF legacy. Why? First, the weather was terrific; a little windy at times, but nothing to complain about. The days were idyllic and the nights cool enough so that a light long sleeve t-shirt would do. The music, you ask? Spectacular. The line-up was made up of music festival veterans, and the type of bands, whether you knew them or not, that made you bob your head, stamp your feet, and clap your hands. Additionally, the homage paid and opportunity given to local acts is a decision that says something wonderful about the organizers of the event. Finally, as always, the people who run this festival know what the hell they are doing. From their logistics to set-up to choice of bands, it was all excellent, and is the reason why the MMMF is near the top of my list of annual Phoenix events. Here’s a break down: The Music: Music was stellar all around from the main stage all the way to the party tent and acoustic stage. At all times, on some stage, a band—good bands—were performing. Some highlights of my weekend included The Riders of the Purple Sage, who have the Grateful Dead vibe (they toured with Jerry Garcia and boys after all, and Jerry was once a member) that is the seed behind festivals across the world; Michael Franti and Spearhead, who has a great sound and are clear festival professionals, may have been the stars of the weekend with their dynamic and energy-infused set; the Flaming Lips’ effort was one of the best I’ve ever seen, as their on-stage antics and set-up including a giant Ferris wheellight structure and zany fans dressed in a variety of costumes (infamous bunny suits were one-ofa-kind); Railroad Earth’s sound was excellent and although I had not seen them before this festival, I’ll definitely put their future shows on the calendar; local bands Haven James, Delcoa, What Laura Says and Peachcake all were spectacular and brought their “A” game to the festival—you need to check them all out if you haven’t already.

Cinco De Mayo: Lately I’ve done extensive research on margaritas. My usual cocktail of choice is a simple and refreshing short gin and tonic with two limes, but realizing that Cinco de Mayo is right around the corner, I changed up recently to bring you some insight on margaritas. Thankfully my search for the perfect margarita hasn’t been in vain, allowing me to share with you the best places to enjoy margaritas for Cinco de Mayo. Here are some of my favorite places in the Valley to celebrate with “‘Ms. Rita’” this Cinco: Los Dos Molinos: With a wait that rivals Phoenix’s Pizzeria Bianco (okay not really, but you know what I mean), most guests are left to enjoy the inexpensive pitchers of margaritas. A quaint dining room and large, airy patio make their Mexican mixer taste that much better. As a nightlife aficionado, I must warn you to go with a group of three or more, just like Los Dos Molinos’ food; the pitchers of margaritas are made for sharing. losdosmolinosaz.com Padres Modern Mexican Cuisine: This little Phoenix jewel offers guests fine dinning, dancing, live music, happy hour, and refreshing twists on the classic cocktail. Remixes of the margarita include the “Patrón,” “Pomegranate,” “Waborita,” and the “Holy Grail,” which mixes Patrón Platinum, Gran Marnier, and Remy Martin VSOP to earn it its title. Blue Martini: CityNorth’s Versatile Playground
Scottsdale- Like the modern new CityNorth in which it resides, Blue Martini is an other-worldly place that seemingly materialized out of thin air in February. Offering a colorfully refined, diverse concept made popular by designer and CEO Mark Vasu within its predecessors across the country, the new location is already packed from happy hour ‘till close on a nightly basis. “We opened like a powerhouse, and it’s only getting better,” says GM Dallas Henderson. “City North is really starting to take its role in the community; there is a lot of big stuff going on and its flowing down to us. In the first few weeks we were developing regulars.” Blue Martini escapes easy classification. “It’s not a lounge, not an ultra lounge, not a nightclub, not a restaurant; it’s an upscale, friendly local establishment,” Henderson explains. The description he gives is telling: This versatile operation can’t be summed up by breaking it down into its separate components, which it offers in an elegant denial of gaudiness and gratuitous imagery. “All of the sconces and lamps, some of the other fixtures, are designed for homes, not commercial real estate,” he says, alluding to Blue Martini’s inescapable intimacy. From the outdoor patio and bar area, with its wicker and stone trimmings and spacious layout, guests are enticed to flow inward to a multi-leveled, mutlilit, multi-finished interior that is split into an elevated VIP bar and lounge, and a descended dance floor with its own bar and prominently displayed DJ booth. For weekend fun beats, Henderson immediately secured the talents of local spin favorites Noah Wylie, Mikyl, and Soul Man. “These guys sell a room and figured out what we’re looking for,” says Henderson. “From Sunday to Tuesday, we do something a little different than the dance and Top 40 stuff, so we bring in western fusion bands, acoustic acts, jazz; I like to mix it up and keep energy in the room, and change it around for the crowd.” A magical layout, incredible cocktails, excellent, affordable food, and constant live entertainment have assured Blue Martini’s future success in the vast F & B Valley landscape. How did you get into the promotions/productions game? Give us the backstory…
I started promoting concerts as “Psyko Steve Presents” in 2000. Basically, I knew a lot of new bands that I thought were good and I knew the venues and other promoters, so I started to help those newer bands get in the shows they wanted to play. Then I was just doing a lot of shows myself putting together lineups I liked. Eventually national agents were coming to me with ideas. Nine years later I am still doing that. I have had the chance to work with some of my favorite artists like Thrice, Limbeck, The Cold War Kids, Motion City Soundtrack, and many more.
What are the attributes of the DJs/artists/ entertainers that you most like to work with?
Same question regarding those who are difficult to work with?
First off, they have to be good if they want to get noticed; be noteworthy. It’s really that simple. I am a music fan first, and when I see something I think is worthwhile, I am willing to bet others will see it too. Second, they have to work hard. I never want to feel like I am working harder for a band than they are willing to work for themselves. I am here to help bands get to the next level, not open doors and lay the red carpet for them to stroll through sweat free. Finally, they have to have their shit

together. It is the little things that make so much difference. It is amazing what a wellwritten email will do. And what some basic manors will do.
Artists who are not self-critical; who believe that they are doing something great when they aren’t. They will never be able to see what separates them from the artists who are where they wish they were. If that drive for self-improvement is not there, it never will be. And there is nothing you can do to help an act like this, so why even try? Finally, not having the basics covered can wreck a band. If one band member is a pain, I won’t take time to deal with them.

What are your favorite 3 venues in the Valley?
First and foremost, Modified Arts. It is where I started doing shows, and it is the one venue I will always do shows at. I like that it is all about the music and art. At most places, music is just about getting people in the door to sell booze. It’s why so many of today’s best bands have played Modified before any other venue would take a chance on them; TV On The Radio, The Hold Steady, Alkaline Trio, Arcade Fire, Rilo Kiley, Vampire Weekend, and Fleet Foxes all played there early on. Then would have to be Rhythm Room and Chyro Arts, both great rooms to see new music.
Give us an idea of the risks vs. benefits that a potential client has to consider when you pitch him/her on a new event?
How do you sway that balance into your favor?
The advantage I have is a long track record of doing interesting events and helping great bands before they were popular. People are willing to take a chance on something I am doing most of the time because they know what I have done in the past. I can remember trying to beg bands to play with Avenged Sevenfold and Cold War Kids. I have acts tell me all the time they wish they would not have turned down this show or that show; they normally don’t pass up good things again. Also, people know that I am not just trying to make a buck; I really believe in all the events I am doing. A great number of acts know that I have never taken advantage of any act in this town, and that also goes a long way into convincing them that a show might worth the risk.

The Arizona Cardinals selected Ohio State RB Chris ‘Beanie’ Wells in last weekend’s NFL Draft with the 31st pick in the first round, then followed up with OLB Cody Brown out of Connecticut in the 2nd round with the 63rd pick overall. Finishing dead last in rushing yardage in 2008, Arizona is looking to balance out their prodigious passing game with some fresh legs in the backfield, and Wells is just the kind of bruising, physical back that can exploit defenses geared to stop weekly Red Bird air-raids. Wells came into college as one of the most highlytouted high school football players in recent memory, and immediately demonstrated his athleticism and skill as a ball carrier. 2008, however, found Wells marred by injuries, which dropped his draft stock despite an impressive ‘pro day’ workout in Columbus. If he comes into training camp healthy and can remain that way for the foreseeable future, grabbing him at #31 will be regarded as a steal, in retrospect. Cards Coach Ken Whisenhunt is a defensiveminded skipper, and though the Cardinals were Super Bowl runner-ups last year, he and his coaching staff are intent on bolstering the defensive side of the ball for 2009. Bringing heat on the quarterback is an essential ingredient to making this happen. Last year, the Cardinals were ranked 14th in the NFL in sacks (average) and 22nd in the league against the pass (below average), so coaches and fans hope Brown will make an impact in improving those numbers. In Round 3, the Cardinals drafted S Rashad Johnson out of Alabama, and in Round 4 they took CB Greg Toler out of St. Paul’s.

SECTION Arizona’s Own Supermodel By Christine Capuano Perry Ullmann is reminded of his loss on Bravo’s Make Me A Supermodel every time he checks his back account that is shy of the $100,000 the winner was promised. Ullmann, a graduate of Desert Mountain High School in Scottsdale, made it past thousands of hopeful applicants and fought his way to the final four contestants on the reality series last April. Although he is undeniably easy on the eyes and stands 6’1”, Ullmann grew up with dreams of a career that relied much more on his athletic abilities rather than his good looks. “I was gonna rescue dolphins, but apparently it’s a long training process, so I didn’t do that,” he

laughed, displaying a charming sense of humor. “No I’m just kidding. I went to a school in Chicago on a football and basketball scholarship for a semester, but after four knee surgeries I moved back to Arizona and went to Scottsdale Community College. After I enrolled in an acting class, I began ditching English and History every day and only showing up for acting class. That was it. I had found my passion.” To further his career and take a step in a more professional direction Ullmann signed up to take part in ProScout. ProScout is a national level scouting service as a program that helps aspiring actors and models get their careers launched. It is a weekend long convention that brings nearly every major modeling and acting agency under one roof, and if selected by one of their scouts, brings the talent face to face with them. Needless to say, Ullmann was selected and received 21 callbacks.

“I was so naive to the business,” he said. “But I nailed a starring role and then I didn’t work again for six months; that humbled me.” It was not long before the slow pace of Arizona’s entertainment market began to bore Ullmann. He decided to stick it out, and eventually landed the lead role on the CW’s new series Hidden Palms. “I was really excited,” said Ullmann. “I was working two jobs at the time. I quit both of them on the spot. A week later I decided to buzz my hair and lost the show. They told me, ‘You don’t look like a high-schooler anymore.’” It was just six months later that the feeling of impatience began to get the best of him once again. While working a desk job at a marketing firm one day, Ullmann decided he had had enough. He did not care about the amount of money he had saved up and just decided it was time for him and his girlfriend to finally make the big move to Los Angeles. When they first got there the couple stayed in Highland Park, which is not necessarily the safest area in the city. In fact, just a week before moving out, there was a on their street.

He decided to rush down there just five minutes before tryouts ended. “They told us we would find out a week later,” Ullmann said. “I wasn’t all that sure in the beginning. It was reality television, but I saw there was supposed to be good hosts so I thought maybe I would give it a shot.” Exactly a week later Ullmann received a call from Bravo! saying that they wanted to fly him to New York City for callbacks. He once again took the risk of instantly quitting his steady job and was on the next flight to Manhattan.
“It was really rocky,” Ullmann said. “We were staying out there with a girl I met over Craigslist, and ended up getting an eviction notice because of the dog. We were told we had just three days to find a place and it is so hard to find a place in L.A., especially on a weekend.” After staying in a hotel for a short while, the two were finally able to land on their feet. Although getting out there was initially pretty rough, Ullmann eventually landed a job as a bartender at a night club and began going on a few auditions in his spare time whenever he could. Some might call it beginner’s luck,

I told myself everyday once I leave this place I need to take everything I learned and be successful in this business, and not just modeling. I was always asking questions and soaking it all up. It’s not every day that you can go up to Tyson Beckford after the show and ask him questions. I was also a student, so aside from taking pictures, I kinda just utilized everything. I made friends...that part was inevitable. But I didn’t go there to make friends, because I knew in the end they wouldn’t be able to help me out.” After the show was over with it was not exactly back to reality for the 23-year-old L.A. resident. Just a day after the show ended he received a call from New York Model Management’s scout Corey Bautista asking him if he would like to be represented. Ullmann continues to land dream opportunities every day.
He booked numerous shows in NYC’s Fashion Week at Bryant Park, has done a few interviews in magazines, and has even appeared in music videos. He is also embracing his creative side and has begun writing television shows. “I met with a big network a few months ago, but both parties agreed it would not be the best fit,” Ullmann said. “However, hopefully we will find a right fit and begin filming soon. I have literally not been sleeping to make sure that this happens. Bottom line, I would like everyone to take from my story that you just have to continue to go for it because you only get closer each time. Anybody can do anything they want in life.”

Afterwards, a trip to the car wash and then to a local country club where this Lexus was parked next to the Mercedes and BMW crowd and fit right in!
The only complaint was with gas mileage, as that potent 4.7 liter engine sucks premium fuel at 14-18 mpg. The base price of $47, 315 isn’t cheap either, and will hit about 55 grand with all options. But if you shop the used car market, a Lexus GX a few years old can be had for about half price, and if it has never been offroad, a better deal yet. Since this is a Toyota product, it will be running long after the warranty has expired, so this is a good buy, new or used.
