I CREATE FOR YOU

MyArtsCommunity.org Looks to Engage Young Arts Supporters One goal of a six-week experimental online fund-raising effort for the Valley’s largest arts and cultural organizations is to develop new donors through technology and outreach. At 24, Meagan Myers represents an important target audience: young people who enjoy and participate in the arts but are not in a financial position to make big donations. “We may not have a lot of arts experiences, but that doesn’t lessen our appreciation,” Myers said. “And, we may not have a lot of money, but that doesn’t mean we can’t help.” In addition to her passion for the arts and her desire to help, her knowledge of and ease with all things Internet were what Bob Delgado of Hensley and Company and Mike Cohn of CFG Business Solutions had in mind when they came up with the fund-raising concept being used at www.MyArtsCommunity.org. “The idea is pretty simple: make it easy for as many people as possible to make small donations online,” Delgado said. “Many small donations can add up to big dollars.” As a pilot program, there are no commitments to the 16 arts and cultural organizations that will benefit from the effort. “We’ll judge the effort based on how much money is raised in six weeks,” Cohn said. “If it’s successful, we’ll apply the concept to a statewide effort in the fall.”

Arizona Artist: Hector Ruiz

Now it’s your turn to perform. No one has to remind you about the current economic crisis. But you may not be aware that the Valley’s arts and cultural organizations have been hit especially hard by budget cuts and are now in urgent need of our financial support. With a nominal donation of $10, $25, $50 or $100, you can participate in the Valley’s largest arts and cultural organizations at

Donors visiting MyArtsCommunity.org can select the organization they wish to donate to or choose a non-designated fund. Donors also will have the option of writing checks. The campaign ends June 15. Arts and cultural organizations include: Actors Theatre, Arizona Opera Company, Arizona Science Center, Arizona Theatre Company, Ballet Arizona, Childsplay, Desert Botanical Garden, Free Arts of Arizona, Heard Museum, Mesa Arts Center, Phoenix Art Museum, The Phoenix Symphony, Phoenix Theatre, The Phoenix Zoo, Scottsdale Cultural Council, West Valley Arts Council and a non-designated fund. “I may not be able to make a $100 donation, but I can certainly give $10 and feel just as good about it,” Myers said. “And, using the web site is quick, efficient and second nature.” For information call (602) 682-2057. Captain’s Log, Stardate 05070.9: Star Trek is Back

Review by Stan Robinson Director J.J. Abrams has a firm handle on telling stories. His experience, firmly grounded in the day-to-day grind of television directing (Alias and Lost), definitely shows in his latest feature film, Star Trek. Facing the 45-year history of the Star Trek universes, Abrams is boldly going where no director has ever gone, and is tackling a monumental task by re-inventing the franchise for the next generation. The task of integrating the full array of special effects- without overpowering the story- is an Abrams hallmark. This story takes us back to the beginnings of each of the primary characters established by the first Star Trek series

from left to right: Mr. Spock - Zachary Quinto, original actor Leonard Nimoy; Pavel Andreievich Chekov - Anton Yelchin, original actor Walter Koenig; Lt. Nyota Uhura - Zoe Saldana, original actor Nichelle Nichols; James Tiberius Kirk - Chris Pine, original actor William Shatner; Montgomery “Scotty” Scott-Simon Pegg, original actor James Doohan; Hikaru Sulu - John Cho, original actor George Takei; Dr. Leonard “Bones” McCoy - Karl Urban, original actor DeForest Kelley.

of the 1960s, including James Kirk, Mr. Spock, Dr. Leonard “Bones” McCoy, and Montgomery “Scotty” Scott. They are faced with the seemingly impossible challenge of saving Earth, with only their Starfleet Academy training and their instincts to guide them. This edition in the Star Trek saga is one that is a must see for Trekkie loyalists; and for the novice, it’ll be a movie to win you over. The special effects are compelling with firm character development. And here’s an inside tip; the next installment is rumored to come in 2011!

Star Trek: A Retrospective Look Forward

By Stan Robinson Who would have guessed that a concept of mankind, space, and the future, created almost 45 years ago in 1966, would be just as relevant now? Lucille Ball, Desi Arnaz, and their Desilu Productions Company did. Since the original creator, Gene Roddenberry presented his concept, there have been a total of 5 television series and 10 feature films produced over the last 45 years. Roddenberry’s concept was to use the aspect of space travel and the future as a way to highlight the inequities of the time, and present solutions/ideologies in the form of adventures, with the unknowns of other worlds as a backdrop. The key issues of the 60s included race, economic instability, the Viet-Nam War, and political ideology clashes. His original pilot starred actor Jeffery Hunter as Captain Kirk and Leonard Nimoy as Spock- an alien with humanoid formonboard a starship. He took the pilot to the major studios and was turned down because of the ‘headiness and philosophical’ overtones; one major studio basically liked the concept but AZWeeklyMagazine.com

felt that broadening the overall appeal would make be a good move. Desilu Productions had the power and pull due to the success of I love Lucy and other shows their company produced, including The Untouchables, The Andy Griffith Show, Mission Impossible, I Spy, and The Dick Van Dyke Show. Cast changes were made, with William Shatner- an actor who had smaller roles in a few of those shows- replacing Jeffery Hunter. Leonard Nimoy as Spock remaine,d and was upgraded to the number two person on the starship. The rest of the cast was assembled, including DeForest Kelley (Dr Leonard “Bones” McCoy”), Walter Koenig (Ensign Peval Chekov), Nichelle Nichols (Cmdr Nyota Uhura), George Takei (Hikaru Sulu), and James Doohan (Cmdr Montgomery “Scotty” Scott). With the actors on board, the series started airing on NBC in September, 1966. It had marginal ratings throughout its three-year run and was cancelled in 1969. Then, a phenomenal thing happened. In syndication over the next fifteen years, Star Trek was more popular than its original three year run! Fan clubs were born, and Star Trek conventions were becoming the norm, with followers of the show being dubbed “Trekkies”. Fast-forward to 1986 and 100 years in story time after Captain Kirk took to space, with the enormous popularity in syndication and fan-based participation, the re-launch of the series was aptly titled, Star Trek: The Next Generation. The updated series kept all of the principle ideologies formed by the premise of the original series, including the crew. This time around, the crew included alien members (after all, we have been in space for a hundred years and the federation of planets had grown). Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) and Commander William Riker (Jonathan Frakes) commanded the new starship Enterprise class D model, with a lot more scientific advancements over the previous class C that Captain Kirk commanded. The crew included Deanna Troi, a half-Betazoid counselor with cognizant powers (Marina Sirtis), Worf as the first Klingon officer in Starfleet (Michael Dorn), and human crewmembers Dr. Beverly Crusher (Gates McFadden), chief engineer Geordi La Forge (LeVar Burton), and introduced the android Data portrayed by Brent Spiner. Deep Space Nine (1993–1999) featured life on a space station rather than

aboard a starship, with a milieu of alien participation from all over the galaxy. At the head of the space station was Commander (later Captain) Benjamin Sisko (Avery Brooks). The next series to follow, and my favorite of the new Star Trek series since the original, is Voyager (1995–2001). Kate Mulgrew as Captain Kathryn Janeway starred as the first female commanding officer in a leading role of a Star Trek series with Voyager taking place about the same space time frame as Deep Space Nine. With its Battlestar Galactica like overall theme, of just trying to get back to Earth after being stranded in the Delta quadrant, the stories of survival while maintaining ethics and humanity were appealing factors for me. As the starship Voyager navigated the 70,000 light year 75-year journey back to Earth, their contact with other aliens with some joining their journey, tested the concept of Star Trek’s main philosophical principle of the “Prime Directive” and interference in the normal progression of alien races. A highlight of the series included the half human-half machine “Borg” character of “7 of 9” played by actress Jeri Ryan. The Borg were prominent adversaries in some of the Star Trek: The Next Generation stories. The last Star Trek TV series to be produced is a prequel in the space timeframe of the original series with Captain Kirk was Enterprise (2001-2005). The stories centered around first extraterrestrial contact with the Vulcans and the guidance that led to Earth’s first warpfive capable starship, the Enterprise, commanded by Captain Jonathan Archer (Scott Bakula). This series gave us a look at humans as we learned to cope with space travel and its perils along with new revelations. Star Trek movies have become a staple and reflective of each generation of moviegoers. The movies based on the original Star Trek series and starring TV cast members are Star Trek: The Movie (1979), The Wrath of Kahn (1982), The Search for Spock (1984), The Voyage Home (1986), The Final Frontier (1989), and The Undiscovered County (1991). The movies based on the TV series Star Trek: The Next Generations and featuring cast members from the TV series are Generations (1994), First Contact (1996), Insurrection (1998), and Nemesis (2002). And now, for the generation known as the “Z ers” (born after 1990 or so), there’s the latest movie simply titled Star Trek, directed by J.J. Abrams, which gives us a look at the origins of the original series characters and the circumstances of their friendships.

Take a Claustrophobic Journey into The Crypt By Randy Montgomery

Fables have told us that you can steal from the rich and give to the poor and be handsomely rewarded. What you should not do is steal from the dead and give it to yourself. A group of young adults find out this lesson the hard way in the new thriller, The Crypt, now playing at Chandler Cinemas.

Writer/director Craig McMahon and crew manage to capture the tight, cramped spaces of the crypt with ease, making the viewer feel as claustrophobic as the characters while they scramble to find their way through the maze of hallways and catacombs. McMahon also wastes no time introducing audiences to the fright delivered by the undead. The opening scene drags on, building anticipation of what is to come next. You know the grave robber will meet an untimely death, but when will it come? The same can be said for our group of criminals. You know what they are getting themselves into, and you know they will be greeted with the same treatment as their predecessor. When the zombies appear, they do so with a bang. Being a horror film fan and

‘Swing to Any Music’ Says Malloy By Randy Montgomery

Love N’ Dancing star/writer Tom Malloy explains how he became involved in West Coast Swing, “I was taking lessons, then went to a competition. It was so incredible! West Coast Swing can be danced to any music… at the biggest country bar in Oklahoma or hottest club in Los Angeles. The first song I danced to was “September” by Earth, Wind and Fire.”

and finds it quite enjoyable. Jessica seems to have much more in common with her instructor/partner Jake (writer/ star Tom Malloy) than her husband. This, of course, poses a slight problem. Smart is perfectly cast as the likable school teacher who finds solace and comfort through dancing. Her charming personality fills the screen and will capture your heart, and she has wonderful chemistry with newcomer Malloy. Billy Zane sheds his often dark character image and delights moviegoers with a much softer role that will win over audiences that despised him in earlier films such as Dead Calm and Titanic. A comic dance performance puts this accomplished actor in a new realm of how we think of him. A word of warning: be prepared to sign up for West Coast Swing lessons yourself after viewing this film. Not to mention, the theme song, “Just Like This” performed by Holly Brook and David Iscove will be stuck in your head for some time. I have been humming it for the past month. Love N’ Dancing is an upbeat and lighthearted romantic comedy that will make you want to get up and dance. Love N’ Dancing had its Phoenix premiere as the closing night of the Phoenix Film Festival in April and opens Friday, May 8th in select theatres Valley-wide.

The story beings in 1979 when a scruffy grave robber enters an underground crypt full of riches from those buried during The Depression. Those individuals were afraid to let go of their prized possessions and decided to take them with them to the grave. The robber finds exactly what he is looking for and more. Yes, the riches are there, but so are angry zombies that aren’t too keen on having their jewelry and other pieces of gold taken from them. Fast forward to present day, when the beautiful Gina (Abra May) coerces her friends to accompany her underground and raid a crypt with the hopes of striking it rich, so that each of them “can retire twice.” She later says that she was aware of the danger, but chose to proceed with the excursion anyway without informing her partners in crime of what may be lurking below. Within minutes of entering the dark, wet, cramped underground burial ground, the group is met by angry zombies. These undead creatures are not too happy about intruders and are very protective of their belongings.

Dramatic Actor Billy Shows His “Zane-y” Side

never admitting to being scared (I lead the group through the haunted house at Halloween), I was easily startled on numerous occasions. Thrills and chills abound in this well made horror flick. The Crypt delivers an uneasy claustrophobic feeling for the viewer, filled with equally uneasy anticipation of what will happen next. The anticipation is well justified, as what we fear will happen… does. The Crypt shares qualities of what I thought made Lions Gate’s 2005 release of The Descent a leader in the genre. The Crypt held its premiere screening May 1st -2nd at Chandler Cinemas to an enthusiastic crowd, and is continuing this weekend. An encore at Pollack Tempe Cinemas (McClintock and Elliot) will be held June 25th -27th. A DVD release is scheduled after the theatrical engagements in Arizona and Southern California.

Take a “Swing” at Love N’ Dancing By Randy Montgomery

Randy Montgomery: Was that really you in that comical dance sequence? Billy Zane: That was me. I love dancing. I rather pride myself on my dancing. It was ironic that my first outing in a dance based film was to be someone touted as a terrible dancer, or one that hates dancing. RM: What drew you to Love N’ Dancing and the role? BZ: I love musicals. I thought this would be fun to be a part of. I grew up watching Gene Kelly and all the MGM greats. I did a play in London on the west end where I played a dance instructor. I had to learn all the ballroom dances. I’ve got to do that on stage, but not on film yet.

He’s done some wonderful musical specials back in the day, which I am a huge fan of. Working with all of those wonderful dancers and of course, Betty White. It was such a good energy on set, a great vibe. It is nice to have a pleasant film. Pleasant is so underrated as opposed to in your face and aggressive. Life is so aggressive right now.

The Mission: Modern Latin Eats Inspire Area Foodies

Chef Matt Carter has been invigorating and challenging the palettes of Valley diners for over a decade, and his newest menu at The Mission in the heart of Old Town Scottsdale clearly exemplifies his personal tradition of excellence. Along with Owners/Operators Brian Raab and Terry Ellisor, Carter is expanding from Zinc Bistro, Kierland Common’s French/American stalwart that since its inception has proven seasonally resistant, and since the downturn in the market has continued its positive growth. So much so that opening The Mission- a Latin/American testament to Carter’s stripped imagination and a clear departure from Zinc’s distinctive European approach- isn’t viewed as much of a risk by those who know of the chef’s talent and the owners’ reputation for quality. “I turn over the menu often,” says Carter. “There are always new products depending on the season, new ideas I want to try out. I was just touring the ranches in Argentina for grass-fed Estancia beef; trying different cuts, testing out the product. Obviously, food is subjective; one man’s caviar is another’s rotten fish eggs. I rely mostly on my palate to determine what we serve, and see if people follow. I’m not arrogant enough to think that if I like it then everyone should. But I always start in my own direction, and the dishes I create are very product specific.”

16

May 7th - May 13th, 2009

Carter took a comprehensive South American voyage to research The Mission’s identity. “People here (in the Valley) are used to Sonoran style Mexican food- y’know, enchiladas, burritos- but there are not a lot of places that serve Latin food,” he explains. “I went down there, and the food completely changes from Mexico; it opened up a lot of ideas for me. So I took popular traditional dishes and made them appealing to the American consumer. I’ll use a pork shoulder instead of a pork leg, or, there’s a Peruvian dish called ‘ante churro’ that is served with beef hearts, for instance. Well, I’m not going to put beef hearts on a plate for someone at this restaurant, so instead I made it using a tenderloin with faux gras, with chilies and tomatoes from Peru, then mixed in some Asian flavors, as there are many Asian influences in South American cuisine.” The interior is Spanish quasi-gothic, an efficient marriage of new world history set among Scottsdale’s modern municipal landscape, with chandeliers overlooking wooden tables and booths, and candelabras with copious amounts of dripping wax sitting atop intermittent surfaces. The room is like a true mission building; wide open and featuring little sight obstructions, other than the surreal, glowing, brick half-wall that takes up one side of the bar. “It’s Himalayan salt rock,” says Carter, who along with a unique back of the house vision also takes an active role in the visual concept and design of the restaurant. “The amber light it reflects makes a nice contrast with the low lighting, the gothic feel.” The Mission and Zinc Bistro, two contrasts that find themselves

AZ WeeklyMagazine.com

heavenly intertwined within the cutthroat competition of Valley restaurants, are anchored in the big picture experience and execution of three guys who know the value of diversification. “We’re talking about a fish concept around here next,” says Carter, looking at dining room of happy people enjoying his food. “I think this area needs one.” Apparently, things are just getting started. For the Love of Wine: Food Pairing Made Simple By Nathan Mears

As promised, it’s time to continue the discussion of pairing food with wine. Pairing food and wine is a much written about, yet an oddly difficult subject to grasp. I spent a good portion of my life trying to reinforce the notion that all things associated with our taste buds are subjective; you might even say ‘sketchy’. What’s right for me may not be right for you or the next person. So with this in mind, I will attempt to give you the constants in the relationship between food and wine, and then let you decide what flavors work best for you. All foods contain one or more of the following components: fat, acid, sugar, salt, and spice. Each of these components reacts with wine in a different, but consistent way. Food has reactive components and so does wine. All wines will contain some or all of the following: acid, sugar, and tannin. In my theory, the key to matching food and wine is to understand how these components react with one another regardless of flavor. As always, flavor will be up to the individual, and there is no magical formula. For simplicity we will use these two terms: “stronger” and “milder”. Stronger means drier, more tannic, more acidic, etc., and conversely, milder would then be less dry, less tannic, less acidic, etc. Now that we’ve gotten the definitions out of the way, let’s have some fun. What makes wines stronger? Why do some foods turn your favorite everyday Cabernet into the ‘Incredible Hulk’ that rips your face off with tannin? Sweet and spicy are the main culprits here. Foods that are sweet and/or spicy will make wines stronger: reds become more tannic and sweet wines appear drier. Next time you have a great backyard barbeque to attend, try bringing along an off-dry Columbia Valley Riesling or a juicy California Syrah and watch the smiles as your friends dig in.

18

May 7th - May 13th, 2009

Fat, salt, and acid on the other hand, show off the mild side of wines. Depending upon the situation, mild can be good or bad. Let’s say you’ve opened a massively tannic Napa Cabernet, and it’s just too much. Try a few bites of a soft blue cheese along with it and the fat, salt, and acid in the cheese will soften the tannins right out. Now imagine you are enjoying a big rich Chardonnay, when your host hands you a lime and Sea Bass ceviche. As you take a bite of the ceviche, you suddenly notice your Chardonnay has become flat and lifeless; the acidity in the ceviche has all but erased what little acidity is in the wine. A brief recap: foods high in fat, acid, or salt will make your wines appear milder or more muted in character. Sweet and/ or spicy foods will make your wines appear stronger. To experiment, try pairing wines higher in acid or tannin such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, and Sauvignon Blanc with those foods that create a milder affect. Those wines lower in tannin and acid or higher in sugar like German Riesling, Viognier, Pinot Noir, or Gamay pair well with those foods that have a stronger affect. Have fun, enjoy your wine, and you’ll find out what combinations work best for you. Cheers!

Great Moms (Sometimes) Give Bad Advice: When I was still a Southern California high school senior, I decided that my last semester in high school should be spent at the beach, not stuck in class. I think all of us do and that’s why Toby Keith’s song “I Love this Bar” became one of country music’s greatest hits. Well, he’s capitalizing on it by launching I Love This Bar and Grill, which will be housed in the theater district at Mesa Riverview. It is looking to open in late May or early June, so keep your eyes peeled. The restaurant will showcase live music and dancing, Toby the mechanical bull (what’s a country bar with out a bull?), and Southern style food. The most striking feature will be, well, the bar; an 85-foot guitar-shaped monstrosity. As the song says, there is never a cover charge. I had completely immersed myself in documenting and pursuing my musical influences and their live performances. I had been sneaking into shows all summer and using my camera as a pass to get backstage and photograph these artists. I am sitting backstage with a friend, talking with the artist when all of a sudden, gun shots go off. People are being pushed to the floor, girls are screaming and confusion sets in. My friend and I lay on the ground for a moment before we decide we need to run. The camera is broken and we missed the shots that we had been waiting all night for. It was the first time I realized that I almost lost my life, trying to chasing my dream... To some drunk a-hole is hitting on your date, who tells you all you do is press a button, you say _______________. “I could pull out your cover charge from my wallet and show it to you if you want...” Then I would: Fire off the highest watt flash in his face during his response, interrupting his train of thought. It would make for a fun photo also.

AJ Calzada, Photographer What are your favorite club shoots? The clubs with high energy! The places that take the time to make sure they have good lighting and treat the photographer like a part of the team! I have always enjoyed shooting at places like Axis / Radius and Jackrabbit. I enjoy shooting the Phoenix and Tempe scene as well. Spots with great DJs and friendly service always help the quality of the event photo. I like to be able to roam around and try and capture the candid things that are going on. I also enjoy the live shoots at clubs with backdrops and photo walls, it brings out the primal nature in people to be shot live. Who are the best human specimens you’ve worked with consistently and what makes him/ her/them so? I like working with the unpretentious, fast paced adults in this industry. The ones that know that we as younger adults are the future and that we are the next working formula. I love working with the specimens that want to help young artists through their journey of creative realization. I enjoy working with the twenty-something artist, but let’s face it, we are all competing with each other. I pretty much enjoy working with anyone who has a positive attitude and is willing to feed creatively off of each other.

22

The most bizarre moment in your burgeoning career as a photog/designer: May 7th - May 13th, 2009

The most gorgeous outdoor setting you’ve shot: I tend to lean towards the more metropolitan style when shooting outdoors. I also prefer the longer exposures of the open air at night, the contrast of morose shadows and illumination are always pleasurable to me. The numerous light prisms and flares that are possible with extended exposures have continually interested me. A common misperception about photographers is: That they don’t always need a photographer credit on a published photo; this is what the photographer deserves in the least. Also, that they don’t mind shooting or want to capture pornography. Please don’t insult my education by asking me to use it to perpetuate that. Another misconception is that we are there to brainstorm creative ideas, that are going to make ‘their’ concepts successful, for free. Is it ok for you to party while you work, or do you stay relatively distanced from the scene? Joining the party you are shooting can be an easy way to get great photos, but you have to be discerning. One client might be more satisfied if they see you directing people and staying busy on the photo wall, while the other would rather you schmooze in for a candid shot with a celebrity they know and respect, which can be done by associating yourself with the fun. I usually stay away from partying at the shoots until three things have happened: I captured all the shots, I pleased the client, and I got paid.

Baseball: Oregon State Gets Best of Sun Devils

The 3rd ranked ASU Sun Devils baseball team (33-11, 16-5) was humbled by PAC-10 foe Oregon State (27-12, 11-7) in Corvallis last weekend, 10-5. Though ASU went out ahead early by way of a Beaver error, a pair of RBI doubles by Riccio Torrez and Kole Calhoun, and an RBI hit by Carlos Ramirez, OSU kept chipping away. A few late Sun Devil errors and a 5-run 8th inning sealed ASU’s fate.

#6 ranked ASU Lady Sun Devils (3815, 8-10) took advantage of a Kaitlin Cochran grand slam in the 6th inning to beat #13 U Cal (34-16, 9-8) 7-3 last weekend in PAC-10 softball play. Pitcher Hillary Bach was good for the 23rd time this year. Next up for the Lady Sun Devils is Oregon State on May 7th in Corvallis and then Oregon on May 8th and 9th in Eugene.

Unhappy Boldin Works on Sideline During Minicamp Cardinals WR Anquan Boldin didn’t partake in team drills during the recent team minicamp, and instead did some light drills and exercises on the sideline. The disgruntled playmaker is looking to get out of Arizona, but after draft day came and went and no teams made serious offers for the brutally strong, talented player, it is clear that he will have to suck it up for the time being and wait

for another opportunity to present itself. Coach Ken Whisenhunt has no illusions that Boldin’s ‘injury’ (the MRI was negative) is a statement of malcontent, referring to ‘seasonal allergies’ as a common malady amongst players during this time of year.

By Robert Mallen of G Cue Billiards

Does the size of my pool cue shaft make a difference? This is one case at least where size does matter, but smaller may be better. Most pool cues come with a 13mm shaft standard. There is nothing wrong with that, but many players prefer a smaller shaft size to increase performance. This generally ranges anywhere from 10mm to 12.75mm. There is of course a trade off the smaller you go. The smaller the shaft, the smaller the sweet spot on the cue ball, and that will promote greater accuracy, English, and cue ball control. However, it can also increase the potential for miscues because you are striking a much smaller part of the cue ball. This requires a player’s stroke to be more accurate and consistent. Going smaller isn’t for everyone and personal preference should always prevail, but until you

G CUE

try it smaller you will never know how satisfying it can be. Whatever you choose, there is no right or wrong answer. Do what works best for your game, because you are the only one making the shots. Keep practicing and shoot em’ straight Mallen has been a central figure in the Phoenix billiard scene for over a decade. He and his wife Peggy run local pool leagues and tournaments, and have provided expert advice and equipment to players of all levels for 13 years. Phoenix- Biltmore’s Mane Attraction is slashing the price on Fridays for a blow dry and style. The quest for the perfect blow-dry is a trend sweeping the country, and those seeking the perfect pairing of style and pampering usually feel it strongest at the end of the work week. A salon in New York made its mark by only offering blow outs and is aptly named ‘Blow’, and one salon in Boston offers a Blow Dry Boot Camp. Even on the cable channel QVC, tips and products for blow-drying have become the focus of a new show. The Mane Attraction located in the Biltmore is taking up the trend locally. Normally, this styling is priced anywhere from $34 to $60, depending on length. However, every Friday, Mane Attraction is conducting a Blow Out to Go Out, offering its professional services for only $25 to $40. It’s the ideal way to freshen up for an evening dinner or before hitting the town- and it’s guaranteed to turn heads. Each standard blow-dry includes a relaxing neck, back, and scalp massage along with a Bumble and Bumble shampoo and conditioning treatment. New Law Will Change Your Life

There has been a lot written and said about the Law of Attraction, but what about the Law of Distraction and InterruptionTM? That Law did not exist, so I decided to create it.

Sedona’s Sensuous Hideaway: Amara Resort & Spa

Sedona- Opened in December 2006, Amara Spa at the Amara Resort provides a sanctuary to relax and rejuvenate. The 4,000 square foot spa features six treatment rooms, including one couples’ room, manicure/pedicure area, relaxation area or “quiet room,” separate male/ female locker areas with steam room and showers, and a private yoga room. In addition, the spa features the exclusive London-based Elemis line of products and treatments. Amara Spa is one of only five in the United States to offer Elemis. Signature Treatments: Elemis Exotic Lime and Ginger Salt Glow This exfoliation ritual invigorates and revitalizes the body. After a light body brushing, warm oil is dripped luxuriously over the body before the Exotic Lime and Ginger Salt Glow is applied. The skin is deeply cleansed, polished, and softened to perfection. Elemis Sole Delight Foot Treatment with Pedicure The ultimate in pedicure pampering. Nourish and condition your feet and nails while the decadence of warmed Skin Nourishing Milk Bath and Exotic Frangipani Monoi Oil lavish their richness onto your skin. Aromatherapy oils add a sensory experience that is pure

indulgence. We will have you and your feet walking on cloud nine. Elemis Exotic Coconut Rub and Milk Ritual Wrap This is a traditional Balinese ceremony that reaches every inch of the body with pure sensual delight. This opulent exotic wrap is excellent for smoothing and softening the skin and is combined with a facial pressure point massage and de-stress scalp treatment to awaken the senses. Elemis Pro-Collagen Quartz Lift Facial This anti-wrinkle facial is clinically proven to reduce the number of wrinkles by up to 94% and improve skin firmness by up to 57%, after just one treatment. The power of Padina Pavonica is accelerated by the electrical energy of precious minerals Quartz, Tourmaline, Rhodochrosite and Malachite to re-energize cell communication, while Laminaria Digitata and Red Coral optimizes cellular respiration and regeneration for a firmer, uplifted, more youthful looking appearance. Health & Fitness Amara Hotel, Restaurant & Spa offers a variety of exercise options, including an in-house exercise room which features free weights and a treadmill. Private yoga is also available and may be arranged creek side or in a private room. For more information, call (928) 2824828 or go to www.amararesort.com.

Reviews and photos by Chad Haire

In the past, we have tested the world’s best cars, but we realize there are plenty of truck folks out there. This is Arizona after all! So, I thought a look at Ford’s Super Duty series is due.

The base price of a Super Duty with an anemic 5.4 engine is about $25,000. With the King Ranch interior, turbo-diesel engine and other options, we hit the 52 grand mark. With all options, including the six tire setup, I am told these can reach 60 grand. So while the King Ranch diesel is an impressive rig, you might have to be a king to afford one!

Scion XD

Some see the Scion XD as an economy car. There is some truth to that. Being well-equipped at only $15,450 makes it economical to buy. And with a gas mileage rating of 26-32 mpg, it’s certainly economical to run. But there is more to the XD, because it is fun to drive. The base engine is a 5.4 liter gas V-8, but it’s not up to the towing duties this rig was intended for, so forget it. The next choice is a gas V-10 rated at 362 horsepower and 457 lb/ft of torque. It will set you back about a grand, and gets 9-11 mpg if you are not towing. I had the turbodiesel engine with 350 horsepower and a whopping 650 lb/ft of torque. It pulls like a freight train, which you need with a 6,190 pound payload and 24,500 pound tow rating! But it will add about eight grand more to the sticker price and suck diesel fuel at 11-15 mpg. Another disadvantage is trying to fit this monster truck in a parking space or making U-turns on narrow desert trails. But this is what separates the real truckers from the pretenders, right? Another option I had was the King Ranch pack. It includes nice leather trim with a fancy set of four leather bucket seats. So even though there is enough room inside for about eight people, we are limited to only four. At least, they will travel in style and total comfort!

The steering is quick and has a good feel. The firm suspension allows you to take corners like a sports car. The brakes are nice and firm. Even with my spirited driving, I got 31-33 mpg. The interior holds four real people and the cabin controls are simple to use. A neat little car. Complaints? Well, the firm suspension results in a firm ride, but thanks to a solid body structure, many bumps and thumps don’t reach the driver. And like the Scion XB, we get Toyota quality, so this car will be running long after the warranty runs out. A good buy.

They also whipped out their only cover, which was an upbeat, folksy version of The Rolling Stones’ “Start Me Up”, which was, simply put, hysterical. Phoenix- The actors (Harry Shearer, Michael McKean and Christopher Guest) who make up the “fake” rock band Spinal Tap are anything but. 25 years after the movie was released, their cult-like following still appreciates their tongue-in-cheek comedy and musical (ahem!) talents. Despite a half-full venue, The Dodge Theatre was buzzing with excitement and laughter during the half music, half comedic show. Comedic talents aside, they displayed their many musical abilities, including switching instruments on several occasions. They covered their full repertoire, which really is just more than Spinal Tap. They delved into their
