Annie Get Your Gun: Wild West at its Best

This rootin’-tootin’ spectacular musical comedy is a Wild West show-withina-show that frames the ageless love story of sharpshooters Annie Oakley and Frank Butler. Although showbiz and romance prove to be a bit of a rough ride, this high-hearted celebration of independence and pride hits the target every time as a testament to female ingenuity. The dazzling musical score, considered by many to be Irving Berlin’s best, includes the show-stopping entertainment anthem, There’s No Business Like Show Business, along with many additional gems. Harvey Perlman made his choice years ago, but is now acutely aware that something critical is missing and yearns to change the course of his life. He is afraid if he doesn’t, the coming years will be filled with longing and regret. Should he now make the choice to fulfill his dream and ignore the anguish he will bring to those he loves, or should he forever be haunted by what might have been?

Stan Robinson’s Best movies of 2008!

I screened over 250 films this year, and the process of narrowing the choices down to a select handful was quite a chore, but it was fun! I looked over my log of movies and rewatched a good number of them in order to prioritize my list. Here are my best of 2008!

The Dark Knight Director Christopher Nolan opted to shoot the stunts with models, full size sets, and used a wire team for a more realistic look to The Dark Knight, and it shows on the big screen! This second installment in the re-energized Batman story surpasses the first; very rare in these days of sequels! Actor Christian Bale not only gives us a dynamic character in Batman. His Bruce Wayne is captivating as well. Whether Batman or Bruce Wayne, we’re compelled to watch him as the story unfolds. Frost/Nixon - Actors Frank Langella (Nixon) and Michael Sheen (Frost) reprise their roles from the Broadway play. Under the talented direction of Academy Award winner Ron Howard, Frost/ Nixon steadily builds to the ultimate climax during the Richard Nixon/David Frost interviews a few years after Watergate. For a movie that’s a straight forward “talking heads” drama, it crackles with tension as the two men head toward the final interview. What makes this movie work, and very well, is not only the two lead actors, but also the supporting cast of Sam Rockwell, Kevin Bacon, and Matthew Macfadyen. The Curious Case of Benjamin Button - Sure there’s a lot of hype out there about this movie, but in this case the product lives up to the billing. At our press screening, mixed emotions by my colleagues places it in the ‘all or nothing’ category; one either likes it a lot, or not at all! It’s a Sci-Fi/Drama and starts with the premise of a baby born as an old man who gets younger as he grows. The love interest throughout the story is played by Cate Blanchett, who grows normally. How the two find love and maintain a relationship is aptly handled by director David Fincher in this excellent story.

Rachel Getting Married - Actress Anne Hathaway said she was seeking more mature roles and truly breaks out of the “Princess” typecast with this performance. She proved her comedic timing skills in the recent Get Smart (2008), and here she gives us a look at a person who is trying to overcome the reason for an addiction, and the repercussions it has on her family, who, in a sense, need just as much help as she does but won’t admit it. Hathaway comes of age in this stirring drama. Changeling - We are aware of Angelina Jolie’s talent for action movies like the Tomb Raider films and the recent Wanted (2008). But films like A Mighty Heart (2007), where she played Mariane Pearl, the French wife of slain Wall Street Journal reporter Danny Pearl, reminds us of her knack for drama as well. In Changeling, she delivers an understated, poignant performance by the sure hand of Academy Award winning director Clint Eastwood. From the first few moments of the film, her magnetic performance draws one into her character’s plight, who exhibits uncommon determination to find her missing son. An excellent period film set in 1950’s Los Angeles. The Wrestler - This movie is being called the comeback movie for Mickey Rourke. I’m of the mindset that he never left. In Sin City (2005) he brought a dynamic to the story that only a seasoned veteran can. In The Wrestler, his performance with co-star Marisa Tomei grabs hold of our emotions and doesn’t let go. The story follows a pro wrestler in the later years of his life, as he grapples with the thought that all of us will be faced with one day: what do you do when you’ve made your living doing what you love and the time comes when you’re too old to keep doing it? Brideshead Revisited - Based on Evelyn Waugh’s 1945 classic British novel, this big screen continuation of the highly rated AZWeeklyMagazine.com

PBS television miniseries picks up where the series left off. If you’re into period films, this movie has the splendor and the “pomp and circumstance” of the early English period on which it’s based. The memoirs of Captain Charles Ryder (Matthew Goode ) who is stationed at Brideshead Castle during WWII, remembers his involvement with the owners of the Brideshead estate, the aristocratic yet Catholic Flyte family. Family members of Brideshead are brother and sister Sebastian (Ben Whishaw), Julia (Hayley Atwell), and, their controling mother, Lady Marchmain played exquisitely by Emma Thompson, who also stars with Dustin Hoffman in the very good movie Last Chance Harvey that’s now playing.

Cloverfield – It has been quite some time since a Sci-Fi movie left one guessing right up to the end. The first Alien (1979) movie is the one that comes to mind for me. The mystery of ‘What is it?’ is what this movie offered as it gave us only the perspective of a video camera lens in the shaky hands of an amateur. He starts out taping a friend’s going away party, as events unfold, he’s documenting something from the “unknown” that’s loose in New York City... The Reader Kate Winslet, who’s also starring in Revolutionary Road, gives us a view of just how wide a range she has as an actress! This story takes place in post World War II Germany. Almost ten years after an affair with an older woman comes to a mysterious end, law student Michael Burk (David Kross) sees his former lover again as she defends herself in a Nazi war crimes trial. When you watch Kate Winslet in this stirring role and remember her in Revolutionary Road, her talent as an actress becomes blatantly apparent. By Stan Robinson It has been more than ten years since Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet last starred together in Titanic (1997), and they have grown immensely in the honing of their acting craft. DiCaprio, with three Academy Award nominations, and Winslet with five, have matured into seasoned actors. Revolutionary Road is an engaging drama because each actor delivers a convincing portrayal of their character, to a point that I found myself not being able to choose a side. It’s the 1950’s in Connecticut. Frank and April Wheeler have always seen themselves as special, and want to live their lives together. They date, make

their plans, and then an unexpected pregnancy happens. They rejoice in the news, marry, and start their new journey together. Frank, being the good man that he is, takes a job that he’s good at it, but for which he’s indifferent. They move in to their new house on Revolutionary Road, and make the promise that they will not become the typical suburban family with the dog, the cat, and 2.5 kids. Despite their efforts, the Wheelers find themselves becoming exactly what they didn’t want: he, a good man with a meaningless job who, like clockwork, takes the same train into the city every morning. And she, a content but less than happy housewife who’s starving for fulfillment and the passion she misses in her life. They have become another American family with lost dreams and a routine life. Seeing the direction of their lives and looking to change it, April comes up with a plan to start all over again. It involves leaving the suburb behind and moving to Paris, France, a dream that Frank has always had, but that was forestalled when they had the baby. They both take a hard look at where their lives are and decide to go for it. When the plan is put in motion, each one is pushed to their limit. One wants to escape whatever the cost, and the other wants to save all that they have, no matter what the compromises might be. Revolutionary Road is an engaging, heartfelt story, of love, living life, and trying to fulfill dreams. Add this movie to your must see list.

Mixology Madness: Jameson ‘Mix It Up’ Bartender Contest

A Better Future… Prepare for tomorrow’s expenses today! Increase Your Cashflow! Get Your Financial Needs Analysis

Absolutely FREE! Call (623) 584-0845 Valley- They say that on St. Patty’s Day, everyone becomes a little Irish. Well, that may be true, but well before the 17th of March, a competition will be taking place that may help you prepare, or put another way, put you in the mood for the greenest day of the year. The 1st Annual Jameson ‘Mix It Up’ Bartender Contest will be held on January 12th at 8pm at Tim Finnegan’s, Fibber Magees, and the Skeptical Chymist. The competition is open to any bartender who would like to show off their skills as a professional “mixologist”. Each restaurant bar will host their own contest with a maximum of 30 bartenders competing for prizes per location. Competing bartenders must submit one cocktail (that has Jameson Irish Whiskey as an ingredient and regularly available cocktail ingredients). Cocktails will then be evaluated based upon their taste, presentation, overall appearance, and flair. Of course, Jameson will be available for sale, which given that it is the most preferred Irish Whisky in the world, should put a smile on anyone’s face.

Send a Virtual Drink That You Can Actually Drink!

January 1st - January 7th, 2009

AZ WeeklyMagazine.com

By Adam Ostrow Virtual gifts are big business, and virtual drinks – sending someone a cute graphic featuring a martini, a Jack and Coke, or a Mike’s Hard Lemonade, for example – is an immensely popular activity on social networks. GiveReal is a new service that is looking to monetize this activity in a big way, allowing users to send virtual drinks that can actually be used to redeem the real thing, at any bar or restaurant in the US.

The way it works is pretty simple: If you want to give a drink to someone, you buy it on either GiveReal or using the company’s Facebook application. Your friend then gets notified of the gift, enters their own credit card information, and in turn has a credit that can be used whenever they decide to go get their drink. Drinks range from $1 – something of the Milwaukee’s Best variety perhaps – up to $99 for something more like a shot of Louis XIII. GiveReal sees social networks as the perfect impetuous for buying someone a drink. For example, in the Facebook News Feed, you see activities from friends breaking up, to getting a new job, to celebrating a birthday. All of these occasions call for a drink, and with a price point as low as $1, GiveReal believes it can turn this simple virtual activity into a profitable real-world one. GiveReal isn’t the first to try this business, but it’s the first we know of that will work everywhere – existing Facebook apps like BarTab only work at certain establishments. Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin has given his stamp of approval for the concept and is one of GiveReal’s initial investors. Eventually, GiveReal may expand beyond drinks and turn other forms of virtual gifts into real ones. www.givereal.com

BY BRENT DIGGINS AND EFIA MOORE

It tis’ the new year and best of luck to you all and make the most of it. So, who has taken a ride on the light rail? I was there for opening day festivities so read about that, read about John Mayer’s sea cruise and all that happened, is happening and will happen in the Valley. Light Rail Opens: We’ve heard about it for years, we’ve paid for it for years and now we can use it for years! The light rail opened to the public on December 27th with a day full of fun and festivities and, of course, the Night Owl was there. While we didn’t get up early to be “the first to ride,” we thought we should make an appearance to see what was going on. So about noon or so we decided to head down and park along Mill Avenue to start our journey. Of course we needed a couple of primers to get the day started so we headed to Rula Bula for some black and tans and maybe, just maybe, an Irish Whiskey. From there we headed to the stop on Mill Avenue and took it to the next stop at Tempe Town Lake (again, we didn’t feel the need to sit on the train for an hour, we were more interested in the party). So our one-stop ride was pleasant, although packed shoulder to shoulder. Upon exiting at the Tempe Town Lake stop we were greeted with a pretty nice festival with bands and beer and food tents. To my surprise and enjoyment, Tempe’s own Roger Clyne and the Peacemakers were the headlining act of the festival. Clyne put on his always dynamic live performance filled with his favorites. Although there were families and people who had no idea who Roger Clyne was, the crowd was engaged and lively. Clyne was having a good time at one point relating stories about how he is terrible at the video game “Rock Band” and drinking a shot of alcohol from someone in the crowd. While the beer selection was slim (Bud Light) and small (one truck), the lines moved fast. There weren’t any incidents that I saw, but people just seemed to be having a grand ole time. I know there has been much talk and uproar that the light rail isn’t open late enough for us Night Owls, but let’s take it one step at a time. For those interested, the train cars were nice and I only saw one person almost get hit. The light rail has much promise for events so try to include it in your planning for sporting events, special events

and going on a pub crawl (of which we ran into many people doing). Mayercraft: So John Mayer, for the second time, has decided to invite his musician friends and the general public on a cruise to Mexico. To me, that sounds like a can’t miss. Sailing from Los Angeles to Cabo San Lucas from March 27-31, the cruise has a great lineup including John Mayer (of course), OAR, and Guster among many others. The premise of the cruise is very simple: drink a lot, listen to great live music on a constant basis and have a great time. Although I wasn’t on the first cruise, I’ve read that a lot of celebrities make this cruise a must as well so don’t be surprised to be mingling at the buffet or all you can eat ice cream with some of the world’s most popular actors and musicians. As with all cruises, there is a huge price range starting at about $700 and going up to a few thousand bucks. For us Arizonans it is ultra convenient as you can take a cheap flight or make the drive over to Los Angeles. It should be a great time, and I’m highly considering going. If you are going or have any tips for the event, let me know. For more information on Mayercraft Carrier visit mayercraftcarrier. com. Desert Botanical Gardens: So where are my art/culture fans? You know I just don’t like to drink and carouse, but like to add some culture to my activities too so I went to the Desert Botanical Garden to see world-renowned glass blower Dale Chihuly’s exhibit. I can simply say that it is AMAZING! While the exhibit would be great during the day, I, of course went at night when the exhibit is accented with lights. The crowd was a mixed bag across all age ranges and demographics, and there were a lot of couples and groups of friends as well. Chihuly’s spectacular creations are found in more than 200 museums worldwide including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, London’s Victoria and Albert Museum and the Smithsonian American Art Museum. This is his first desert setting and the contrast was unique, and it worked well. Tickets are only $15, so grab a friend and head on out. It is the perfect precursor to dinner and drinks, and the expansive garden walk is invigorating too. For more information visit dbg.org. Be safe, be a good person. Till next time…

Oh, No! Not a Bloody DUI!

Cocktail Corner

By Kevin Breger www.TheAZCriminalLawyer.com

There is an increasing trend amongst law enforcement agencies in Arizona to draw blood for analysis in DUI investigations. What a thought, as if it is not intimidating enough being stopped by the police (depending on which jurisdiction there might be two or even more officers standing nearby with their hands on their guns ready to draw) but now you have to agree to submit to a blood draw or face the possible consequences of losing your driver’s license for a period of one year.1

Fortunately the officers are not free to do as they please with respect to blood draws and the Fourth and Fourteenth Amendments to the United States Constitution along with Article II, Section 8 of the Arizona Constitution in conjunction with certain case authority2 all place certain restrictions on the specifics of who, how and where a blood draw can take place. For example the draw must be done by a “qualified medical personnel” in a “clinical environment”. Naturally there is also case authority and statutes that further clarify what a “qualified medical personnel” and “clinical environment” means. Bottom line: each case needs to be assessed on its own merits. There certainly may be times where the way the blood was drawn was quite simply NOT OK in the eyes of the law. The

possible result of which could have an impact on your DUI case. Kevin Breger is the principal attorney at The Law Offices of Kevin Breger, PLLC. Discount Cab’s Fleet Reaches 75 Toyota Prius Taxis

Phoenix- On Earth Day 2008, Discount Cab, Phoenix’s largest taxi service, announced its “Green Cabs for Blue Skies” campaign with the addition of 20 Toyota Prius taxis to its fleet of vehicles. Today, the fleet includes 75 Toyota Prius taxis, making it the largest hybrid fleet in the country, according to the Taxicab Limousine and Paratransit Association. “We exceeded our goal of 70 hybrids before the end of the year and accomplished this feat in a non-regulated, non-mandated environment,” Craig Hughes, CEO of Total Transit, Discount Cab’s parent company, said. Painted in the bright lime green that’s made Discount Cab a staple on Valley streets, the fleet uses less gas, improves the Valley’s air quality, and has been embraced by drivers and customers who widely support the effort. On average, each Discount Cab taxi endures 80,000 to 100,000 miles of road use each year. A gallon of gas produces 20 pounds of carbon dioxide emissions. miles driven compared to 60 pounds for Discount Cab’s more traditional Ford Crown Victorias. “This year has been a real whipsaw with gas prices going from $3 to more than $4 to now under $1.50 per gallon,” Hughes said. “The supply of Prius went from available, to impossible to find, to available again. Our plan is to keep adding Prius cabs to our fleet in the coming year.”

Hughes says that the airport contract is due to renew next year, and that he hopes the 90-plus miles per gallon plug-in Prius will be available, which would provide Sky Harbor Airport with the most fuel efficient taxi service in the United States. “We have found the Prius to be very reliable and versatile in carrying a mix of passengers and their luggage, and believe it is far better than the trouble-prone CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) taxis currently serving the airport with limited trunk space,” Hughes said. Total Transit is already looking at a variety of solar arrays to power plug-ins for the new Prius. The

company plans to be prepared when the new vehicles are available, thus further reducing dependence on non-renewable resources. “With the addition of an airport fleet, our goal is to operate 250 hybrids by the end of 2009,” Hughes said. “This translates

to an annual savings of about 1 million gallons of gasoline and a 10,000-ton reduction in carbon dioxide emissions. “We’ve always been the green taxi company,” he concluded. “We achieved our environmental sensitivity goal in 2008 and look forward to an even greener 2009.”

Why did this band get started? Our bandleader Liam emigrated from Ireland and needed a job that didn’t require an interview…if you know what we mean. Do you play cover tunes or originals? Both, though most people just assume it’s all our music since the covers we perform are lesser known, and when we get done tweaking them they’re barely recognizable. In that sense, I guess you could say we cover originals. Are you any good? Last November we played in a little town in Ireland called Leixlip- we were huge. How would you classify your music? Celtic mayhem. If Paddy Reilly & Phil Linot met in rehab and started jamming, you’d get The Brazen Heads. Though we must confess, some people prefer the Michael Flatley/Bono comparisons. How often do you perform live? We’re full time so you’d be hard pressed to avoid us.

Martin, Frank Sinatra, Van If you love the music of Dean a hollowed blend of Beck, Morrison, Band of Horses and y will be playing at the Ruby check out Try Me Bicycle. What’s the funniest thing that ever happened while performing? The time Henry Winkler ignored his producer & entourage because he was fascinated by the stories coming out of our bandleader Liam. Who is the craziest band member and why? We try not to answer this kind of question out of respect for the doctors who have treated some of us. What do you do different that kicks ass over other bands? We are without the all- too-common poser lead guitar player. It’s amazingly effective, really. Right now Arizona is riddled with defeated polka bands. Who gets the most Groupies and why? Our fiddler Tim. None of us (including him) understand why. There’s rumor it may be the length of his bow or the earring, but the rest of us assume it’s because he’s so loud he can drown out our drummer. Tell us a secret about the band: We’ll share 2: 1.We don’t wear any underwear on stage 2. Once when one of our players tried Rogaine and ended up growing hair everywhere BUT his head.

What advice would you give a startup band? Don’t believe the myths about groupies, free swag or backstage antics. Seriously, don’t buy into it because we’ve been doing this for years and have yet to experience any of it. What’s the biggest misconception people have about musicians? There aren’t any really because whatever people are thinking, they’re probably right. Also the answer directly above. What’s the most difficult aspect of trying to make it in this biz? Finding a brand of good black t-shirts that won’t shrink in the dryer. What do you think will happen to your band in the next 2 years? Several of us may join AARP. Apart from that we’re hoping to finally live out our dream of getting local celebrity David Spade to come to a show. What will people see when you perform live? A naughty, sweaty yet vibrant lead singer, a fiddler who sounds amazing but looks like he’s consumed too much red bull, a drummer who isn’t satisfied to only play sitting down, a keyboard player that has an entire music store on stage with him and makes use of it all and finally….a smiling yet bald bass player who wears a suspicious amount of clothing (see our dirty little secrets response). Oh, and make sure you don’t bring any little ones because we never know when those female groupies are going to unload the contents of their panty drawer again! Got any CDs out that we might buy? Who’s Yer Paddy is available at: Rock Zone, CD Baby, ITunes or at one of our shows. Do you have any upcoming shows that we should know about? Our January shows are listed below. his memoirs, a collection of “thoughts and anecdotes” he’s compiled in his years as the singer of the Australian band. Don’t expect a tawdry tale like Motley Crue’s The Dirt, however, as Johnson’s 300-page manuscript will have a different tone. “I like humor a lot,” Johnson said, “and cars have been a big part of my life. I’m lucky enough that I’m able to buy some of the exotic ones. Instead of doing drugs, I did motorcars. I’m not sure which one is more expensive.” Stories in the book will likely include Johnson’s debut ride in a Concorde jet, his first auto race and that time he drove backwards for 9 1/2 miles because his gears were busted. Versuzz: Accessory Design’s ‘Brace’ New World

So you think leather is only for handbags and cowboy boots? Think again. Versuzz Designs (pronounced ‘ver-SOOZ’) combines funk, fashion, and philanthropy with the unique, ingenious use the material. This fabulous new jewelry line blends crystal with leather and style with comfort, with each handcrafted design assuring compliments from passersby far and wide. The bracelets, rings (and soon earrings!) are inspired by a desire to create a look that is different from the ‘bling bling’ of conventional jewelry. The designs incorporate earth tones, hints of silver and gold, and complementing shapes to make every outfit you wear turn heads. Versuzz is sold in boutiques in Boulder, Colorado, and online both wholesale and retail. You will need to literally “brace” yourself for this trend that has begun

to amaze the West. Not only will these fantastic accessories enhance your ensembles, but you will feel great wearing them. All of the leather used in Versuzz products is recycled and 10% of all proceeds from Versuzz go to the Casa Materna, a non-profit organization in rural Nicaragua that seeks to reduce the maternal death rate. After working in the fashion industry, designer Susan Lambert became a Spanish teacher, which allows her to volunteer more than a month and a half per year at the Casa Materna. Lambert utilizes her fashion knowledge and exposure to global trends to wow audiences everywhere. To find out more about Versuzz products, visit www.versuzzdesigns. blogspot.com. TECH! SECTION

Digital Dave Says… Protect Your PC in 2009! Viruses, Malware, Spyware, Trojans, Key Loggers, Adware are all basically the same thing in my book: Unwelcome programs that can destroy a computer’s software. We have all come to live with these destructive little critters that crawl around the internet and through e-mail attachments but many unknowing folks become victims of these heinous programs. One of the best ones I have seen lately is Antispyware 2009 (or a variant) that installs itself, reports that your computer has a bunch of Viruses and Trojans and then wants you to pay to install their program to remove the problems. This is a scam and all they do is take your money and run, leaving your computer trashed. If you have been duped by this program, call your credit card company and then call a good computer repair shop to remove it.

Best ($60/yr + cost of hardware ) The absolute best solution is to have a good software package like Norton Internet Security 2009 running and also be behind a hardware firewall that is found in all present day routers. My favorite is the Linksys series of wireless routers that will give you this added protection and you can find them for about $60. My last suggestion is to use a more secure browser. Firefox 3.0 is my favorite and is both faster and more secure than the current Internet Explorer. It can be downloaded at www.firefox.com.

Being the owner of a tech repair shop, I have seen them all and many can destroy your system and cost you hundreds of dollars to repair so it is worth your time to protect yourself now.

It’s time to think differently about Computer Service

Here’s how: The key to solid protection is to have both a good virus/spyware program running and a good firewall in place. Make sure you uninstall any virus protection program you have running before installing a new one. Good (Free) Go to www.filehippo. com and download AVG 8.0 Free virus/ spyware and the Comodo firewall 3.0 software. Together this is a great protection suite and you can’t beat the price.

Better ($60/yr) Purchase Norton Internet Security 2009 and install it. Make sure you get the Internet Security product vs just the Virus/Spyware program as the Internet Security includes Norton’s firewall, which is great. I don’t recommend any prior versions of Norton but the 2009 program is very good.

Wheels of Wellness kicks off Arizona Car Week, a series of collector car auctions that draw car enthusiasts from across the nation and throughout the world to view—and bid on—some of the rarest and most valuable pre-war classics, muscle machines, racing and sports cars assembled anywhere. The WoW event is the brainchild of a small group of Phoenix and Scottsdale business executives who are avid vintage race car collectors and drivers, and whose lives have been touched by cancer. European delectables and imported wine and beer will be served by Avanti’s Restaurant of Distinction.
