oF “CHow MAsters” on TrAvel ChAnnel As you and movie director Frank Coraci –- your longtime friend – go to various locales for “Chow Masters,” do you find the comfort-food-making competitors take it seriously?

We’ve had grown men cry. It’s very intense. There’s a whole day when they’re in the kitchen with the cameras, making the food before we meet them, then we go to their restaurants and try their food. We focus on traveling around America to all these places, but really, the food is the star. People ask me, “Did you ever have something you didn’t like?” but I think it’s really a matter of preference. Something can’t be creative unless it tastes good to begin with. In the end, my big point is whether it was cooked properly, but Frank will bring in more of the general public’s point of view. And that’s really cool.

ere TV shows to limit themselves to mirroring reality, high-school kids would wear only jeans, plaid shorts and black leggings. Shows need to step it up – but not too much. “I really believe the shows attract a certain viewer who watch for the story, and when they get bored they watch for the clothes,” says Mandi Line, costume designer on MTV’s “Faking It.” “You can do reality to a point where a viewer will find themselves in a character. Ever since ‘Greek,’ you will have an audience that identifies with somebody and the way they dress.” Line brought in some of the hip culture of Austin, Texas, where the show is set, but she also wanted the characters to be relatable to viewers anywhere. Amy (Rita Volk) pretends to be gay, but during the ruse she realizes her deep feelings for her best friend, Karma (Katie Stevens). Amy’s finding herself, and that includes her fashion.

DISCOVER YOUR LIMITS.

For sure. I’ve always said the most important thing about food is understanding the foundation and origins of where things come from. You can’t really start playing with things and fusing them until you know that, but I’ve traveled around the world so much, I hadn’t spent enough time in America!

Yeah, well, there are a few of us, but yes, it’s a lot of hard work. It’s not as glamorous as people might think, but it’s a lot of fun and 24/7 for sure. Do you do 12-hour days?

Every day, a different class, mixing intense core, cardio and strength training with martial arts techniques. Located on the NW corner of Scottsdale Rd. & Lincoln.

No, a lot more than that. I mean, it’s slightly tacky to say how many hours you work. But I have a real estate company in Scandinavia, as you might know. I have three offices in Sweden ... . But my point is, every morning when I wake up I have hundreds of emails in a different time zone waiting to be answered. So yeah, it never stops ... .

I’m still amazed, 12 years into this coming from Sweden. But still I’m amazed how much cash there really is. I would say to generalize a little bit, it really depends on what neighborhood and price segment and how deals are made, but probably two-thirds are cash.

Driver gets wrecked, becomes overwhelmed with fury and races towards the driver deemed responsible. It’s a fact of life in the high-stakes world of stock car racing and comes with a long history of intense feuds, both on and off the track. Let’s take a look at some of the most notorious beefs and battles the sport of racing has seen throughout the years. Those under the millions of watchful eyes fans eagerly follow with mega doses of fiery interest and opinion. Enter….

BUSCH VS. HARVICK

RACE! SECTION

FIERY FEUDS TO REV UP YOUR RACING MOOD! MAY 2011 Kyle Busch and Kevin Harvick’s consistent feuding resumed yet again after contact Busch made with Harvick resulted in Harvick crashing into fellow teammate Clint Bowyer late in the race. Afterwards, Harvick waited for Busch and then positioned himself to park his car in front of Busch on pit road. Busch pulled onto Harvick’s bumper, Harvick climbed from his car and, just as he threw a punch into Busch’s window, Busch used his car to bump Harvick’s car out of the way. The empty car turned and hit the inside wall. No one was hurt, but Harvick’s crew members were running down pit road when the car hit the wall. The fans, were clearly the big winner this day.

PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBITION AT PHOENIX ART MUSEUM Illustrating the History of the Photographic Book The latest photography exhibition at Phoenix Art Museum walks visitors through the five-step process involved in the creation of a photographic book. On display are fifteen books published from 1930 to 2013 by nine celebrated photographic artists including Ansel Adams, Edward Weston, Richard Avedon, and W. Eugene Smith. As a vocal proponent of the photographic book, American photographer Ansel Adams helped pave the way for photographers to embrace the book as a medium to organize, disseminate, and promote their work. “HART TO HEART” AT THEATRE ARTISTS STUDIO Thru May 18th Join us for a celebration of the Lyrics of Lorenz Hart. During the 24-year association between Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart, they wrote more than 550 songs, 28 Broadway shows and eight movie musicals. Hart to Heart explores the magical composition of what a “Larry” Hart lyric was like: Its rapier wit, unexpected rhymes and sparkling content. Over 40 songs by this talented pair will be presented in a cabaret setting. Some will be familiar; others not. But they will “Bewitch, Bother and Bewilder” as we follow them from Broadway to Hollywood and back. On demand, Saturday matinees have also been added on May 10 and 17, so there will be eight performances total. Show times are 7:30 pm on Fridays; 2:00 pm and 7:30 pm on Saturdays and 2:00 pm on Sundays. Box Office: 602-765-0120 or online at www.thestudiophx.org.

ARIZONA OPERA RECEIVES $500,000 CHALLENGE GRANT Anonymous Donor Gives Deadline of June 30 for Company to Raise Matching Funds Pleased with the overwhelming transformation that Arizona Opera has achieved in just 12 months, an anonymous donor announced a $500,000 matching challenge grant today with a deadline of June 30, 2014 in order to claim the gift.

When conveying the terms of the gift, the donor expressed appreciation for the efforts of the Arizona Opera’s new administration in revitalizing its statewide community engagement, paying down its accumulated debt, holding its expenses steady, and executing a full season of artistically extraordinary performances in Tucson and Phoenix. The goal of the challenge is to raise an additional $500,000 by the end of the Opera’s fiscal year on June 30. Any new or increased donation to Arizona Opera over and above an annual gift may be applied to the challenge and will help the company achieve a record-setting second consecutive Million Dollar May. Last year, General Director Ryan Taylor took the helm of the struggling company, leading a successful campaign to raise $1 million in May of 2013, with 100% participation of its Board of Trustees, Staff, and patrons. Since then, the Opera embarked on its 2013-14 Season and just weeks ago, announced a major multi-year title sponsorship with CopperPoint Mutual, which will further assist the Opera’s efforts to fully eliminate its accumulated deficit. The Opera recently announced its new 2014-15 Season including the world’s first Mariachi opera, Cruzar la Cara de la Luna, a new production of the Tchaikovsky masterpiece Eugene Onegin and crowd pleasing masterpieces of Rigoletto, The Magic Flute and The Daughter of the Regiment. Those interested in contributing to the Million Dollar May Challenge Grant may do so online atwww.azopera.org or by calling Mark Saville, Associate Director of Development at 602.218.7337.

‘Don Peyote’

‘Fed Up’

Dan Fogler plays an unemployed stoner who suffers a midlife crisis over his upcoming wedding. Fueled by vivid apocalyptic dreams, he becomes obsessed with Doomsday theories and decides to make a documentary on the subject while his fiancé is busy planning their wedding. (NR - 98 minutes)

For the past 30 years, everything we thought we knew about food and exercise is dead wrong. Stephanie Soechtig directs a documentary that the food industry doesn’t want you to see, aiming to change the way you eat forever. (PG - 92 minutes)

Joseph: What other logical explanation than an approaching apocalypse is there for Anne Hathaway, Jay Baruchel, Josh Duhamel and Topher Grace agreeing to appear in “Don Peyote?” The new drug-trip comedy looks more like an amateurish home video than a legitimate feature film. This is asininity at its absolute worst.

Stan: If there was a film to serve as that revelation for the food we take for granted, this is the movie. This reviewer will never look at food in the same way again, which is a good thing as it served to extremely motivate viewers to think twice about prepared foods that simply requires a ‘zap’ or two in the microwave as opposed to cooking those meals from scratch.

The following quotes were pulled from interviews conducted by AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s film columnists with talent speaking on behalf of movies recently released in theaters.

Director Nigel Cole (‘The Wedding Video’) By Joseph J. Airdo “[The movie operates on] the whole issue of, ‘Whose wedding is this?’ We have got a very domineering mother of the bride and she carries about like it is her wedding. She is out to impress her friends and relatives with creating the biggest wedding that anyone around her has ever seen.

In “The Wedding Video,” Lucy Punch and Robert Webb play a newly married couple whose best man (Rufus Hound) decides to capture their wedding on video and present them with it as a gift.

“The groom thinks that it is all about him, the bride thinks that it is all about her and the best man thinks that it is all about him. It should be for the happy couple but it very rarely is. So, yeah, there is a little stress and a lot of pressure and that brings stuff out.

movie does that and it does that really well. I think that there is a real suckerpunch toward the end that tends to make audiences wipe a tear from their eye.

SOUNDBITE SPOTLIGHT

“You can see all of the men in the audience sort of trying to do it subtly so that no one else notices and all of the women weeping openly. But before that and along the way it is really just a very funny film. And I think that it feels different. I am not sure that it feels like any film that you have seen before - at least not like any comedy that you have seen before.” -

“What I like to do is make people laugh and just when they are least expecting it make them cry. This

Randy Montgomery’s ‘Movie Tweets’ ‘Legends of Oz: Dorothy’s Return’ ~ We are not in OZ anymore. Big names and decent animation cannot save this lackluster ode to an American classic. Grade: C‘Locke’ ~ Hardy was perfectly cast for the character driven script. Take a ride with this suspenseful, claustrophobic, yet simple thriller. Grade: A‘Mom’s Night Out’ ~ A poorly executed faith-based silly comedy that means well and is quite harmless, but utterly forgettable at the same time. Grade: C-

‘Neighbors’ ~ A moderately funny and moderately touching 96 minute raunch fest with actors (Efron and Byrne) that deserve better. Grade: C ‘Rio 2’ ~ Who doesn’t like talking animals? Enjoyable and entertaining enough for younger viewers, but adults may prefer its predecessor. Grade: B‘The Amazing Spiderman 2’ ~ I think Spidey needs to take a break. Not that this is a bad film, but he has overstayed his welcome. Grade: B-

BREWNITED WE STAND We are in the middle of what can only be described as one of the most important weeks of the year, American Craft Beer Week. This is when we celebrate all that is good about craft beer, which is just about anything. Let’s start by reading the official press release from the Brewers Association. From May 12-18, beer lovers everywhere will toast the country’s craft beer renaissance during the ninth annual celebration of American Craft Beer Week (ACBW). With more than 2,800 small and independent craft breweries and hundreds more

popping up across the country every year, the observance of ACBW is more significant than ever before. Across all 50 states, craft beer lovers, breweries, wholesalers and retailers will celebrate the culture and community of craft beer. “American Craft Beer Week allows everyone to honor and toast the hard work and success of the craft beer community,” said Julia Herz, publisher of CraftBeer.com and craft beer program director at the Brewers Association. “Against many odds, craft brewers have used grassroots efforts to grow the industry one glass, one bottle, one can, one keg, one growler and one customer at a time.” New this year, ACBW celebrates the many faces of craft beer. Presented in a video montage, brewers from all 50 states have united by taking “selfies” to best represent their brewery and state. All are encouraged to take their own “selfies” with craft beer from small and independent brewers and post on social media using #ACBW to help celebrate the week

So what does all that mean to us here in Arizona? Plenty. We have already had a couple of days of amazing events, beer dinners, pint nights, special tappings and more. But the best is yet to come. Draft House on 83rd Avenue will be Exploring Canned Craft Beer on Thursday afternoon from 3:30-5:30. At 4:00 on the same day Whole Foods on Camelback will be sampling a variety of Canned Craft Beers and at 5:00, Cold Beer and Cheeseburgers in Old Town will have Cantastic Thursday with Big Sky, Grand Canyon, Ballast Point, Oskar Blues, Ska and SanTan. How convenient that Flanny’s Third Thursday Tap Takeover coincides with American Craft Beer Week. The Bruery will be in the house starting at 6:30 and will feature several beers never served in Arizona, including this year’s anniversary beer, Sucre, Barrel Aged Autumn Maple and Tumescence. Friday has Mellow Mushroom Tempe kicking off a charity pub crawl to benefit St. Mary’s Food Bank at 4:30. Other stops include Handlebar on Mill and world of Beer.

Whining Pig will feature great beers from Ska Brewing starting at 5:00 while Sip Coffee and Brewhouse in Scottsdale has a variety of canned beer specials. After Ameri-CAN, hit up Bootleggers and TT Roadhouse. Both will be featuring a variety of great beers. Bootleggers will have representatives from Bell’s, Anderson Valley and Mike Hess Brewing while TT Roadhouse will offer some complimentary beer can chicken and six of the hottest brewers in craft beer. Saturday ends American Craft Beer Week and we do it up right in Arizona. The Fourth Annual Ameri-CAN Craft Beer Festival has become nationally recognized and has grown every year. Held at the Scottsdale Civic Plaza, this event will feature over 70 breweries and 250 beers, many not regularly available in our state. Not only will this event feature virtually all of the amazing craft cans we can regularly purchase in our state, but look for beers from these great breweries Continued On Page 35...

Lookin’ for love – again Andi Dorfman survived Juan Pablo Galavis ... and now, she’s aiming to help “The Bachelorette” survive the latest “Bachelor,” too. The Atlanta-based assistant district attorney famously walked out on the “star” of the unscripted ABC franchise’s last edition, terming him “borderline narcissistic” on the “Women Tell All” special. He ultimately made jaws drop by refraining from declaring love for the woman he chose, but Dorfman hopes for a more expected romantic result as she does the choosing in the 10th season of “The Bachelorette” starting Monday, May 19. “I think everybody wants to see love at the very end of this,” Dorfman says. “I’ve never felt the pressure to force anything. I don’t feel like there’s a lot riding on me as far as carrying the franchise goes. It has been around for a long time, and for good reason, but I think everybody just wants that happy ending. It’s not about expecting it; it’s about wanting it.”

40

“Bachelorette” and “Bachelor” host Chris Harrison agrees

– even after being unable to conceal his bewilderment when Galavis wouldn’t or couldn’t say “I love you” to his final choice, Nikki Ferrell, on the “After the Final Rose” special in March. “One of the great things about our show,” Harrison maintains, “is that we show everything now, warts and all, so I’m glad we showed the Juan Pablo season. Instead of covering it up and glossing it over and everybody leaving happy, we showed everything about it. And it wasn’t that great. I think our fans demand and respect that, and that’s why the show is maybe more culturally relevant now than it’s ever been.” Dorfman admits she initially wasn’t sure about going through the “Bachelor/Bachelorette” process again. “It took a lot of thinking to figure out,” she says. “I’m not normally the type of person who puts all my emotions, my feelings, my vulnerability and my family out there ... so it was a big deal for me to contemplate doing this again.”

Sox confident Bogaerts will grow into the job

Xander Bogaerts

PRESENTED BY

Yes, there have been errors. And the won-lost record is certainly less than stellar. But the Boston Red Sox hope fans will likely one day look back wistfully at this spring and reminisce about the education of Xander Bogaerts. Indeed, in his first full season in the bigs, the 21-year-old shortstop has shown flashes of the potential that has made scouts across baseball drool. His hitting has certainly lived up to billing — through late April, he was batting .278 with one home run, five RBIs and a .387 on-base percentage. It was these kind of numbers Sox management envisioned when they decided to allow their former starter, Stephen Drew, to test the free-agent waters over the winter. Full name: Xander Jan Bogaerts Birthplace: Oranjestad, Aruba Birth date: Oct. 1, 1992 Height/weight: 6 feet 1 inch/210 pounds Bats/throws: right/right Road to stardom: While in the throes of chickenpox, Bogaerts tried out for and was signed by the Red Sox in 2009 at age 16 ... made his professional debut in 2010 with the Red Sox of the Dominican Summer League and rose steadily through their system ... won a gold medal with the Dutch national team in the 2011 Baseball World Cup

BY GEORGE DICKIE

NOW, WATCH TV ANY WAY YOU WANT.

IT’S TV JUST FOR ME.

But there have also been errors — four through 25 games — and plays that should have been made but weren’t. And Bogaerts has shown a particular vulnerability on balls hit to his left. That the Sox sported a losing record as April turned to May has also contributed to consternation within Red Sox Nation. But the sentiment among the team brain trust is that these are the products of inexperience, that this youngster with a great attitude and and even better work ethic will improve, and that the Fenway faithful will one day look back at these miscues as the growing pains of a future star. Bogaerts and the Red Sox can be seen in action Sunday, May 18, against the Detroit Tigers in a game airing on ESPN. Career highlights: Made major league debut Aug. 20, 2013, and collected his first hit five days later ... garnered USA Today Minor League Player of the Year honors in 2013 and was named to the ’13 Baseball America Minor League AllStar Team Personal: Is the fifth Aruba native to play major league baseball ... twin brother Jair is a former Sox farmhand and current sports agent

Avery (G. Hannelius) is distraught when Wes (Peyton Meyer) starts pulling away from her. Eventually she learns that he’s moving away, and he’s afraid to break the news to her in the new episode “Love, Loss and a Beanbag Toss.” Blake Michael, Francesca Capaldi and Beth Littleford also star.

One of Puerto Rico’s most beloved folktale characters comes to life in “Juan Bobo and the Pig.” The simple boy thinks his mother has asked him to put a dress on his pig. Red has received a similar odd request: Her grandmother wants her to pick up some “pizza paper.” As the Super Readers attempt to solve this dual mystery and keep Juan’s pig from wreaking havoc, they learn something about getting all the relevant information before going off half ... pigged.

A big-hearted but bumbling man (John Candy) agrees to look after his brother’s children for a few days when the parents are called away. As if looking after a house, two small tykes, their rebellious older sister and her endangered virginity weren’t enough, he’s also trying to make up with his girlfriend (Amy Madigan) and fend off the advances of a man-hungry neighbor (Laurie Metcalf). Jean Louisa Kelly and Macaulay Culkin also star in this 1989 comedy.

This leisurely paced but delightful 1987 comedy-drama is adapted from New York writer Helene Hanff’s (Anne Bancroft) charming memoir chronicling the very warm friendship by mail that developed between her and London bookseller Frank Doel (Anthony Hopkins) as he helped her find rare editions of classics from 1949 to 1968. The film also stars Judi Dench, Maurice Denham and Daniel Gerroll.

Gene Kelly and Van Johnson star as Tommy and Jeff, two hunters who get lost and find themselves in a Scottish village. But this is no ordinary village — it’s enchanted and only appears once in a great while. While there, Tommy falls in love with Fiona (Cyd Charisse), and he must decide whether he can leave the modern world behind. Elaine Stewart, Hugh Laing and Virginia Bosler co-star in this 1954 musical directed by Vincente Minnelli.

In “Chuffing With Pride,” Flynn the fire engine is outfitted with wheels that will let him roll on the road as well as on tracks. He’s not thrilled with this development but makes his peace with it after putting out a fire in Sir Topham Hatt’s shed and being hailed as a hero. Gordon learns a lesson about how everyone has value after losing his buffer in an accident.

#4 USE YOUR NOSE The term bouquet refers to the total scent of the wine. Aroma is the scent of the grapes. When wine tasters want to describe the bouquet and the aroma together, they use the term nose.

#1 MOVE OVER CORK, MAKE WAY FOR SCREW CAPS Today, screw caps are replacing corks on more than just inexpensive bottles. Currently, screw caps seal 75 percent of Australian wines and 93 percent of New Zealand wines, and they’re gaining popularity in all countries, including here in the U.S.

F5VE FINE FACTS ON WINE KIDS EAT #5 WHAT COLOR TELLS YOU As white wines age, they gain color. Red wines, on the other hand, lose color as they age. To analyze your glass of wine, hold the glass on an angle in front of a white background, such as a napkin or tablecloth. White wines can range from a pale yellowgreen to a brownish hue. Reds begin at purple and scale all the way to brown.

#2 U.S. FAVES FROM ABROAD The top three imported wines sold in the U.S. are Yellowtail (Australia), Cavit (Italy), and Concha y Toro (Chile).
