CITY! COVER STORY

GET YOUR STONE AGE ON THIS WEEKEND The Great Neanderthal Bash: A Stone Age Rampage presented by The Centurions Saturday, May 17th at 6 pm Rillito Race Track, River Road and First Avenue This Saturday, a north side Tucson Park better known for horse racing and soccer practices will be temporarily transformed into something like a set from Land of the Lost. And if you’re lucky enough to have a ticket, you’ll get to experience it for yourself. Starting at 6 p.m., some 6,000 ticketholding characters will file in – many dressed in hilarious costumes – to partake in the party of the year. They’ll eat, drink, dance and play the night away until free cabs drive them safely home. The all-volunteer crew that’s sweating to erect this make-believe scene are members of The Centurions, a local men’s social group carrying on a Tucson tradition started by the group’s fun-loving and civic-minded founders in 1969. Hammers in hand, forklifts under seat, The Centurions are in their element on this work day, carrying out the plan they’ve been creating all year long. Best of all, they’re doing it all in the name of charity, fellowship and fun.

insurance brokers, architects, doctors, bar and restaurant owners, public safety officers, graphic designers, you name it, these guys bring talents and strengths to the community from nearly every trade and profession. Approximately 100 Centurions are “active” and responsible for thousands of hours of planning and days of grunt work. The remaining members are “life” and “senior” members who have given generously of their time over the years and who remain socially and financially committed to making Tucson a great place to live, work and play. Over the years, The Centurions have raised over eight million dollars for designated local charitable projects, including St. Mary’s Burn Center, Hospice program and a new Emergency Department, among others. Founders named their group The Centurions in reference to the Roman Centurion (a leader of 100 soldiers) to reflect the members’ civic loyalty and commitment. The name also pays homage to one hundred-plus years of service given to Southern Arizona by Carondelet St. Mary’s Hospital,

events have been famously or infamously held at bowling alleys, train stations, airport hangars, movie theaters, downtown streets, parking garages, baseball stadiums, fair grounds and rodeo grounds to name a few. “We try to change up the venue every few years to keep it fresh,” said Bill Hussey, Past President.

So, if you’re over 21, join thousands of your closest friends for an unforgettable evening at Rillito Race Track May 17th. Purchase your tickets at www.thecenturions.com or from any Centurion and you’ll have fun from the moment you arrive until the time you leave. Take it all in while you can, for those hard-working Centurions will have the whole set torn down and cleaned up by noon the next day.

Who are these brave souls working from dawn to dusk in the hot desert sun to put on a single night of nonstop entertainment? The Centurions are 215 of Southern Arizona’s most humble and understated community leaders. An eclectic band of brothers who are business owners, builders, media people, realtors, accountants,

heated discussions ensue. The event chairman ultimately decides on the theme and venue. Ron Teaney, 2014 Event Chair, selected Rillito Race Track to stage “The Great Neanderthal Bash: A Stone Age Rampage.” It will be the first Centurion event to be held at Rillito in a decade.

founded in 1880 by the Sisters of Carondelet, who made the courageous trek to the Old Pueblo to open schools and care for the sick and injured. Over the years, The Centurions’ Board of Directors has expanded its fundraising vision to support other projects including those at St. Joseph’s Hospital and Holy Cross Hospital in Nogales. Where there is an expressed need, The Centurions have always been there to answer the call.

Past years’ themes have brought revelers dressed in Roman togas, pajamas, safari outfits, flapper dresses, pirate costumes, cowboy chaps and Woodstock wigs. Catchy titles are dreamed up, pitched and voted on at Centurion meetings, resulting in events like last year’s “The Great Outlaw Brouhaha, The Good, The Bad and the Centurions,” and 2011’s “The Great Prohibition Exposition, A Bootlegger off Broadway!”

Supported by dozens of generous event sponsors every year, Centurion

Firefighter Health and Wellness Poker Run

• Identifying effective coping mechanisms for sleep deprivation in public-safety jobs

3rd Annual Motorcycle Poker Run for Firefighter Health and Wellness, May 17, 2014. All funds raised go to local firefighter health and wellness initiatives. All funds raised are utilized locally. The most valuable equipment found in the fire station is the firefighter. Despite the advances in safety and personal protection, approximately 100 U.S. firefighters die on the fire ground each year – many from cardiac-related issues. Half of those deaths, however, are preventable with adequate wellness and fitness programs. The fire foundation provides those necessary programs for the local firefighters at no cost to the tax payers or firefighters.

• Providing important mental health and wellness services for firefighters and their families, including those who work for smaller agencies that might not be able to afford access to these services. In January alone, there were four reported firefighter suicides across the country.

The Foundation’s 2014 Firefighter Health and Wellness Initiatives include: • Firefighter Cardiac Disease Assessment Protocol • Reducing firefighter injuries through Personal Fitness Trainer Certification

ABOUT THE FILM

,

‘The Immigrant’

‘God’s Pocket’

‘Million Dollar Arm’

Philip Seymour Hoffman plays a man whose stepson is killed in a construction “accident.” When a local columnist comes sniffing around for the truth, things go from bad to worse and he finds himself stuck in a life-and-death struggle compounded by a body he can’t bury, a wife he can’t please and a debt he can’t pay. (NR - 88 minutes)

John Hamm plays a sports agent who stages an unconventional recruitment strategy to get talented Indian cricket players to play Major League Baseball. (PG - 100 minutes)

Joseph: “God’s Pocket” - exhibiting one of Philip Seymour Hoffman’s final performances - tells a story that is too meager to sustain even a modest runtime and an excessively inconsistent tone. Meanwhile, the movie never makes it clear as to whether we should pity these characters or find amusement in their ineptitude. Herb: It’s hard to figure out what went wrong here; a stellar cast, an intriguing concept, superb production design and nuanced performances are all present. I think the blame is not on first time director John Slattery, but rather on the script which veers from dark drama to sudden, shocking, slapstick violence. See it for Phillip Seymour Hoffman’s performance, but not for the rest.

Joseph: “Million Dollar Arm” is a spectacularly solid entry in Disney’s sports movie canon - one with remarkably wide appeal thanks primarily to its focus being more on the heart of its incredibly inspirational story than on the sport. Consider it a crowd-pleasing home run - or whatever the cricket equivalent of that is.

On the mean streets of Manhattan, Ewa (Marion Cotillard) falls prey to Bruno (Joaquin Phoenix), a charming but wicked man who takes her in and forces her into prostitution. (R – 120 minutes) Herb: The Immigrant is a sad, tragic and beautiful story with a killer cast. This movie is a showcase for stars Phoenix and Cotillard, that’s really quite amazing and thought provoking. It’s rare when a film captures New York City tenements in the 1920’s accurately–think ‘Godfather Part II’ as the gold standard–but ‘The Immigrant’ nails it.

Stan Robinson on Twitter!

Herb: A genuine feel-good baseball movie, which is possibly the first since Field of Dreams. Million Dollar Arm delivers just the right amount of romance, family-appropriate humor and tear-jerking drama from its excellent cast. I love seeing co-star Lake Bell and the other supporting roles hold their own against Jon Hamm, who is also great.

The following quotes were pulled from interviews conducted by AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s film columnists with talent speaking on behalf of movies recently released in theaters.

Actor Patrick Sabongui (‘Godzilla’) By Joseph J. Airdo

“One of my earliest memories was my family gathering around the TV which had horrible resolution back in the day - and my parents were going to let us all stay up late to watch ‘Godzilla.’ “I remember having this thought that, ‘This is awesome!’ I remember seeing people running around screaming and thinking, ‘those are actors and they are telling a story. And the fact that they are telling a story is getting my parents to let me stay up late! We are all united together in the living room to watch this thing!’

In “Godzilla,” the world’s most famous monster is pitted against malevolent creatures who, bolstered by humanity’s scientific arrogance, threaten our very existence. “From the minute that I was invited to audition for it I was just giddy. I mean, it is ‘Godzilla!’ I don’t know if there are any other characters in history that are that iconic. So the excitement never wore off. You roll onto set and everybody is acutely aware of what we are doing - we are working on ‘Godzilla’ and that kind of makes everything OK. “You are instantly part of history regardless of how it does at the box office or what the critics say or how people feel about it. You are part of history if you are working on a ‘Godzilla’ film so there is that energy and that atmosphere that is created around the whole experience.

“And I remember thinking, ‘I want to be part of that! I want to be part of creating these stories for people that are going to make that magic!’ So being a part of that is kind of a dream come true.” - Patrick Sabongui

top 10 Movies “Les Miserables” (2012): Hathaway was a shoo-in for the Oscar she ultimately won for singing her way through the role of the tragic Fantine in the screen version of the stage hit. “The Dark Knight Rises” (2012): It’s not easy to redefine a role as iconic as Catwoman, but Hathaway did it by playing smart – and smartly feline – for director Christopher Nolan.

FILM! SECTION

SOUNDBITE SPOTLIGHT

“Love and Other Drugs” (2010): By not playing her full hand too early, Hathaway left room for big and moving surprises in her character. “Rachel Getting Married” (2008): Hathaway took her career to a new level by playing the thorn in her family’s side at her sister’s wedding.

“Get Smart” (2008): If Barbara Feldon was to get an ideal successor as Agent 99, it’s Hathaway.

“The Devil Wears Prada” (2006): Hathaway hit the bull’s-eye as a recent college grad who proves a big challenge to an imperious fashion magazine editor (a typically great Meryl Streep).

“Brokeback Mountain” (2005): Hathaway shattered many preconceptions with her decidedly adult role as the woman – literally THE woman – in the life of Jake Gyllenhaal’s cowboy character. “Havoc” (2005): Hathaway also went more mature as one of two privileged girls getting more than they bargained for from an East L.A. gang.

“Ella Enchanted” (2004): Between her gigs as a princess, Hathaway put fun spins on fairy tales as the literally spellbound heroine of this fantasy.

“The Princess Diaries” (2001): After cutting her teeth on television work, Hathaway made a big leap into the movies with the perfectly tailored role of an ordinary teen who learns she’s a European princess.

SUNSET AND MOONLIGHT HIKING

Tonight, May 14th 2014, there’s a full moon. Many thrill seekers will be packing their hiking bags with flashlights, snacks and plenty of water to head out on a moonlight stroll through the mountains. Sunset, full moon, and night hiking offers a very different experience for Sonoran Desert adventure seekers and I highly recommend it as the dry, scorching summer heat approaches.

Although I am someone who loves the sunshine and heat, even I must admit it is too hot to hike some days in Tucson and Phoenix. Most desert dwellers are livelier at dawn and dusk, however, most hiking and biking is done in the interim. Owls, bats, coyotes, big cats and other interesting creatures come out at twilight and if you seek a chance to witness them you must do the same. Longer days in the coming months make it easy to get out and enjoy the cooler night temperatures. The dramatic scenery of fresh spring flower blossoms and saguaros can make for a great short sunset hike or the beginning to a wonderful

moonlit stroll. Phoenix and Tucson have numerous guided hikes throughout their state parks year round (check their website www.azstateparks.com), or you can go out and take a trek yourself. There are a few important things to keep in mind when night hiking; never go alone; hike in places that you have trekked through during the day so that you are already somewhat familiar

with your surroundings; on full moon hikes you may never use your flashlight

but take one or two just in case; go slow because your depth perception at night is slightly altered; enjoy the sounds because when our vision is low the other human senses are more highly receptive.

Take a Stroll with Niccole:

One of my favorite places to go night hiking is Douglas Springs in the Rincon Mountains in Tucson because it has wide paths that are well manicured and marked, a lot of nocturnal wildlife and diverse plants, and ultimately a cityscape that is as stunning as the Milky Way that can be seen above. If you have a favorite place to stroll after hours, tell me about it on my “Take a stroll with Niccole” Facebook page and share your pictures, or you can email me at takeastrollwithniccole@gmail.com. Go out and take a full moon trek this season!

Brooke Williamson stews a little over novice cooks

When chef Brooke Williamson signed on for MTV’s “House of Food,” it was to teach. As is so often the case with teachers, she wound up learning. “I learned how to approach situations differently,” she says. “I come from a place of being a very understanding person in a kitchen. I started out in kitchens knowing nothing. But to understand where they were coming from and why they were there, I had to be harder on them than I normally would be on someone with no experience. They had to be broken down a little bit. They felt like they had won this opportunity, but I did not know yet if they deserved it.” The Monday show combines elements of reality shows where all contestants live together with learning to cook from experienced chefs. Some participants had no idea it was such hard work; others didn’t take it seriously enough. “I teach all the time in my kitchen, but I teach people who have experience,” Williamson says. “We have interns who we stick on the side and do prep work and knife work. These people were depending on us to be functional people in a restaurant and had absolutely no knowledge.”

of “BAd TeAcHer” on CBS

•Though “Bad Teacher” is your first starring television series, were other shows pitched to you as your prominence in movies started to rise?

Last year, I had a few offers ... but when I hear those things like, “We’ve wanted to work with you for such a long time,” I think, “Really?” I think I just wasn’t sure how much I wanted to open that door. A few years before, I probably didn’t know if people were interested because I had the door closed completely and said, “I just don’t want to do TV.” I didn’t read anything; I just wasn’t interested. Then I thought, “You know what? It feels silly to be saying ‘no’ to a whole world of possibility. Let’s see what’s out there.” I thought this show was a really special opportunity, and I’m just so glad I did it. •How have you found being perceived as someone who specializes in sassy, humorous characters?

I’ve been doing a lot of comedy, which is wonderful, but I never set out to do comedy. Lately, I’ve felt a little locked into that world, since people forget that actors who do funny things can also do not-funny things. The most exciting thing about film or plays or TV is to take a situation or a character or a world and just show it from a slightly different place. “Celeste and Jesse Forever” is a movie that sort of changed my life, in terms of the people that I met making it ... phenomenal actors who also are creating their own stuff. That’s the new way of the world.
