SOUTHERN ARIZONA ATTRACTIONS
By Jim Gressinger Southern Arizona has many wonderful attractions. For firsttime visitors to our home in Tucson, these are the two we recommend they visit first.

the remains of first Spanish fort built in 1752 when this was the northern-most frontier of New Spain. Tubac is now a thriving art community with over a hundred galleries, shops, and restaurants.
1. Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum: Half-Day Trip. Not a typical museum, but rather a combination zoo and botanical garden. The place is hugely popular and for good reasons. In addition to the beautiful desert gardens and unique animals in simulated natural habitat, the ASDM also offers several performance venues, including the amazing Raptor Free-Flight Program in the cooler months. It’s big & mostly outdoors. So wear comfortable shoes. Nowhere is there a better place to get an orientation to our beautiful Sonoran Desert. Educational & fun for all ages. The two on-site restaurants are very good. The Ironwood Terraces is a selfserve grill with a lot of choices. The Ocotillo Café is fine dining and may require reservations (520-883-5705).
From Tubac, continue north on I-19 for 20 miles and take exit 69 (Duval Mine Road). Go west on Duval Mine Road and follow the signs about a mile to the Titan Missile Museumin Green Valley. This is the seriously scary history of the Cold War. Take the guided tour down into the missile silo and be awed by the immense destructive power of this weapon. They may even let you turn the launch key. A truly fascinating experience.
2. I-19 Corridor: Day Trip. This 70-mile long Interstate Highway runs from the Mexican border north to Tucson. Along the way are many delightful attractions that showcase Southern Arizona’s rich & complex heritage, art, and scenic beauty.Traveling south to north, don’t miss the ruins of Mission Tumacácori20 miles north of the border. It’s a National Park because it’s a national treasure. Exit 29, then left under the freeway.

From Green Valley, take I-19 north to exit 92 (San Xavier Road) and go about a mile west to Mission San Xavier del Bac. Founded in 1692 by Father Kino, this active Catholic church is the finest example of Spanish colonial architecture in the U.S. It’s open to the public daily. We recommend taking a guided tour.

“I like playing Sulu. He is a cool dude. He is a stud. He is more heroic than myself and he is more capable than myself. I am going to say something that seems obvious but it is fun to fly a spaceship and it is fun to be in that world. It is also an honor to be associated with a storytelling franchise that means something to people and, in my opinion, is very hopeful and optimistic about humanity. “There are a lot of projects that have a pessimistic view of humanity. But “Star Trek” has - and maybe part of its enduring quality has been - a very hopeful outlook on our species. It has people of different cultures and backgrounds getting together for a scientific mission in space. I think that is maybe something that people need to hear. “I can’t remember whether it was during filming or during rehearsal but J.J. [Abrams] said something about wanting his son to watch this movie at some point because it is saying something about leadership, growth and maturity that he would want his child to think about. By Stan Robinson “It was a long chase to try to get all of the elements in place, trying to get the rights in place, trying to get the author to agree, the HBO guys, it’s all part of the ongoing process. You know how this business is when you’re thinking that this has got to be made into a film, there’s another place, another person, in another time that are thinking the same thoughts! “We were slotted for 30 days of shooting and it was very, very challenging because of the ‘look change’ of the period, so we had to really be on top of our game in terms of maintaining the schedule, that it’s going to work for all the different seasons, and all the different things like
shooting the movie in Shreveport, Louisiana - and it’s suppose to take place in New Jersey, so the challenges of production were enormous. “The Iceman, is a story that takes you on a roller coaster of a ride inside a sociopath’s mind, but at the same time, it presents another angle of the American dream, the aspiration of people to lead a normal existence, and showing that the ‘mob’ world is not as ‘cool’ as we thought it was, and everybody has their own issues and troubles. That is the main theme of the film, showing the duality of people, showing that people can be nice, inspired, to love, to be secure, and at the same time do

I found the duality of that a very interesting challenge to play. “I feel like what happened to him in his life in general was very tragic. I guess it’s a pretty good example of why it’s best to try and be who you are all of the time - in every situation - and not live a double life. Try and find a version of yourself that fits whether you are with your family, at work, or whatever

environment you are in and whomever you’re with. Be consistent. That’s something that I strive for. “Pretty much every day I went to work I was just quietly to myself - terrified because the character is so far away from who I actually am as a person myself. So it was all quite difficult to be honest and I’m not quite sure how I did it but hopefully people will enjoy watching it for an hour and a half or however long it is.” – Michael Shannon

DELECTABLE S By Jim Gressinger It’s been a year since I ventured down to Tucson’s 4th Avenue. Because of the (eventual) arrival of our Modern Streetcar, the place has been a construction nightmare. Nevertheless, I was anxious to see the progress. For those of you who have never been to our 4th Avenue shopping district, the neighborhood is an eclectic, friendly mix of old hippies, bohemians, and bikers. Most of the places along 4th Avenue are a bit cramped, but Delectables has a large patio for outdoor dining. A sign indicated that on Friday & Saturday nights they have live entertainment. Once inside, I was
equally delighted. The place is much larger than it appears from the street and exhibits a warm, inviting interior. The large windows in front along the sidewalk seem ideal for people watching, which is the sportof-choice along 4th Avenue. I was seated by “MOM”. She took my drink order and said she’d be right back. I mean, I assumed “MOM” is her name because the word was tattooed large and in living color on her partially exposed chest. Soon Jeff, my dining companion, joined me at my window table. “MOM” returned to take our order. Jeff ordered “Tucson’s Best Chef” salad ($10). I ordered the “Corned
Beef Reuben on Rye” with a side of potato salad ($9). We continued chatting amicably through lunch, talking mostly about work and family. Eventually I remembered that I was here to do a dining review and asked Jeff his opinion of his meal. “Excellent! Best chef salad in Tucson.” High praise indeed. My Reuben was also excellent, as was the potato salad. To the extent I have a quibble, the scoop of potato salad was a bit miserly. If there had been two scoops I would have devoured both. Delectables has an extensive menu, including vegan & gluten-free, and a full bar. In a refrigerated windowed display case they also exhibit a variety of desserts. Jeff & I decided to split a berry & pear tart, but could have had anything from a chocolate éclair to a crème brulee to a slice of cheesecake. The tart was very good. Perhaps next time I’ll try the cheesecake. Or maybe ….

“MOM” turned out to be Gabrielle and a cheerful, efficient waitress. Good meals. Fine desserts. Excellent service. Pleasant atmosphere. And weird people to watch. What’s not to like about Delectables?

I should mention that the Modern Streetcar construction on 4th Avenue has been completed and street parking is a breeze. Their mission is to help visually impaired people and their families deal with the many issues they face, whether from a slight vision loss or total blindness, and to educate, mentor, and inform about ways to cope with a manageable reality. Their advisory board consists of 12 people running the gamut from career professionals in governmental services to trainers, to merchants, to citizensat-large. Some are blind, some have low vision, some do not.
The Tucson Downtown Lions Club was chartered in 1923, only 13 years after Arizona became a state, as the only Lions Club in Tucson and the second cub in Arizona. Some of the many services the Lions provide are: - Providing eye exams and glasses - Sorting recycled eyeglasses for re-use on missions to other countries - Screening the eyesight of students at schools around town - Transporting eye tissue to the UofA for research
The Southwest Slammers Beep Baseball team was formed in 2005 with the support of the Southern Arizona Association for the Visually Impaired (SAAVI). They play a rather rough audible softball game called Beep Baseball. Roughly half the players are sighted and the other half are blind. It's not for delicate players and neither is the fundraising they need to do in order to attend the annual Beep Baseball World Series, this year in Columbus Georgia.
