WE PERFORM FOR YOU Asst. Technical Director: Joel Birch Technical Director: Mark Reynolds Phoenix Theatre

Now is the Time to Step Up and Help “There is no more important time than right now to do what we can to protect and sustain our arts and cultural organizations.” So, Bob Delgado of Hensley & Co. and Mike Cohn of CFG Business Solutions have put their words into action through a six-week pilot online campaign to raise funds for the 16 largest arts and cultural organizations in metropolitan Phoenix. “Like individuals and businesses, arts and cultural organizations around the state are struggling,” Delgado said. “Much of that struggle is reflected in sharp drops in donations that are vital for those organizations to continue moving forward. While we certainly can’t completely fill the gap, we can do what we can to make a difference.” That’s the intent of the campaign based on the concept that many small donations add up to big dollars and why donors of all ages are being asked to visit www.MyArtsCommunity.org to make contributions as small as $10 through June 15. If the effort is successful, the concept will be used in the fall for a statewide campaign for more than 300 arts and cultural organizations. Visitors to www.MyArtsCommunity.org can use a drop-down function to select the organization they wish to donate to. Or donations can be placed in an undesignated fund for later distribution. Donors also will have the option of writing checks. All donations will be placed in a special account at the Arizona Community Foundation, the campaign’s fiduciary agent. Arts and cultural organizations selected for the campaign were chosen based on very strict criteria including, but not limited to, an operational budget of at least $1.5 million.

Now it’s your turn to perform. No one has to remind you about the current economic crisis. But you may not be aware that the Valley’s arts and cultural organizations have been hit especially hard by budget cuts and are now in urgent need of our financial support. With a nominal donation of $10, $25, $50 or $100, you can participate in the Valley’s largest arts and cultural organizations at

Matters become more complicated as Jerry eagerly returns to the woman he loves to beat her up, expecting to resume their relationship. are Hiam Abbass, Gael García Bernal, Paz De La Huerta, JeanFrançois Stévenin, and Luis Tosar. Usually I list the actors at the end of a movie review. A hallmark of a Jim Jarmusch film is that the actors, except for the lead, play against their character types and are barely recognizable. See how many you can find before the closing credits tells who they are. And by the way, none of the characters in the movie have names! Spain is the setting for this drama and we’re given a look at the upscale as well as the urban lifestyles of the country. Not to

give away any vital clues or plot details, the film opens with a mysterious loner (De Bankolé), a stranger, whose activities hint strongly that he may be skirting on the edges of the law. We do get the hint that he’s in the process of completing a special assignment, yet trusts no one, and his objectives are not initially clear. During his journey by planes, trains, and buses, we paradoxically learn about the stranger through his intense focus on his assignment and the dreamlike sequences as he travels across Spain toward the completion. For that cerebral challenge in a film to figure out the end, and along the way to guess the actors, The Limits of Control is high on my list. Heck, one of my favorite actresses is Tilda Swinton and if it wasn’t for an extreme close up and her blue/green eyes, I wouldn’t have guessed!

By Stan Robinson Management is the first feature film for writer/director Stephen Belber. The story centers on a

man who has an attraction for a woman that he feels is out of his league. We’ve all been there, whether we’re men or women. In our conversation, Stephen told me that in a relatively short time frame by film making standards (almost a year), his script found its way to Jennifer Aniston. “She

liked the story of the chance meeting of Mike Cranshaw (Steve Zahn) and Sue Claussen (Aniston) when she checks into the roadside motel owned by Mike’s parents in Arizona. It’s the kind of story we can all relate to. So did Jennifer. Once she became attached, I was able to get more of the powers-that-be to take a hard look at my project.” In the story, Mike’s character runs the family motel. Mike continues to work at the motel out of a sense of duty since it’s a family business. He’s not particularly unhappy, he just doesn’t have that sense of aiming for accomplishment that is a vital factor for most working people. In town on business, Sue checks in and Mike feels an attraction to her. In small talk conversations, it becomes apparent that Sue is of the same mind set, only on a different level. Her quest for happiness is stability, order, and making a difference in the world. I asked Belber about his story premise. “It’s about people and the importance of an open mind. I call it living in the lead. I often say this for focus, ‘Lean in, live better, drop out (of the norm)’.

And what of the first exploratory meeting with Aniston? “At that meeting we saw eye-to-eye, not only about the characters but also on production factors as well. I think that when she realized how intimately involved I was with each of the characters; the confidence came that I could handle directing. It gave me the

confidence that I could direct her as well, and that she could give me what I was looking for in Sue’s character. She even called her friend Woody Harrelson for the role of Sue’s ex-boyfriend! With Jennifer’s commitment to Management as an actor and producer, I was able to further concentrate my focus on directing. “

FILM! SECTION Angels & Demons is Pulse-Pounding Partner to Code Review by Stan Robinson Angels & Demons isn’t a prequel or a sequel to 2006’s The Da Vinci

Code. Both movies, based on the “thriller fiction” novels of Dan Brown (his next book, The Lost Symbol, is due in September), are stand alone mysteries and feature Harvard University symbologist, Robert Langdon, played by Tom Hanks.

8

May 14th - May 20th, 2009

When members of the Vatican City special police learn of an eminent threat against the Catholic Church hierarchy, Langdon is summoned to Rome to decipher cryptic symbols. He discovers evidence of the resurgence of an ancient secret brotherhood known as the Illuminati, the most powerful underground organization in history, and a deadly threat to the existence of the secret organization’s most despised enemy: the Catholic Church. The plot thickens when Langdon learns that the clock is ticking on a time bomb acquired by the Illuminati to devastate Vatican City. Langdon joins forces with Vittoria Vetra (Ayelet Zurer), an Italian scientist whose team, while working on an experiment to harness the power of anti-matter, become victims of theft when the devise becomes the time bomb.

It’s a nonstop race against time to find and disarm the bomb, as Langdon and Vetra follow a 400-year-old trail of ancient symbols through sealed crypts, dangerous catacombs, deserted cathedrals and the Vatican’s secret vault, to prevent the destruction of Vatican City. AZWeeklyMagazine.com

The Garden Grows with Urban Emotion By Randy Montgomery

Documentaries are often intriguing to watch, as they follow the lives of real people living through real situations. The outcome can be more dramatic than any script created by Hollywood writers. Such is the case with The Garden, which spans several years and documents the struggles of three hundred plus families that have possession of plots in the largest community garden in the United States, located at 41st and Alameda in South Central Los Angeles. The concept for the garden came from the devastation left behind after the 1992 riots ravaged that portion of Los Angeles and left behind vandalized and burnt out buildings. The community was in dire need of something to help them heal. The property that houses the garden was turned over to the citizens by the City of Los Angeles. The property was acquired through imminent domain when it was slotted to be the home of a trash incinerator facility. The owner of the

property was paid approximately $5 million for the 14-acres, yet the project never came to be. A local resident, Juanita Tate, formed the Concerned Citizens of South Central group which

blocked the project from being built, citing environmental concerns. Tate joined forces with 9th District Councilwoman Jan Perry to secure other sites in the community and turn them into soccer fields. Those fields came under much scrutiny by the community as one significant development never came to be. After being used for years by local residents to grow fruits, vegetables, and herbs for their families, an eviction notice was placed on the entry fence. In a closed-door deal, the Los Angeles City Council, headed by Jan Perry, agreed to sell the property back to the owner for just slightly more than the original payment. The property was slated to be the site of a new industrial building, with a few acres set aside for yet another soccer field – a project proposed by Tate. This deal was considered illegal and improper by the farmers, a majority of whom are Hispanic and/or undocumented. The deal supposedly done by Tate and

Not Forgotten is Unforgettable Thriller By Randy Montgomery

Paganism, Santeria, and Voodoo have always intrigued me. That is why the new film Not Forgotten grabbed my attention from the opening scene. While grizzly, the first few minutes lay the ground work for what is to come. The story is set in the Texas border town of Del Rio. It’s a charming little place, complete with a bustling central square. The people seem friendly enough, but the looks on some of their faces may prove otherwise. In Del Rio reside Jack and Amaya

(Simon Baker and Paz Vega). They live a seemingly quiet life; Jack is active in the community, involved in the Chamber of Commerce and his eleven year-old daughter Toby’s (Chloe Moretz) soccer team. All is well until Toby goes missing from soccer practice, and is thought to be the victim of a kidnapping. The police have a suspect in mind, yet many in Del Rio are under scrutiny, as this seemingly perfect town has a secret; several of the townsfolk may be involved in “Santa Muerte,” a religion that mixes Pagan rituals with Catholicism. It has been condemned by the church as devil worship, but its popularity in Mexico continues to grow and spread across the border. While the police continue their search to no avail, Jack and Amaya cross the border where they meet with a bedridden spiritual woman in a home filled with religious symbols. From here, the story continues to unravel and we learn more about Santa Muerte and more about the characters. Paz Vega is perfectly cast and Simon Baker delivers a surprisingly powerful performance. Chloe Moretz could easily be the next child actor to watch. She is adorable in this film and further shows her acting talent in the upcoming Fox Searchlight release (500) Days of Summer, which is poised to be this summer’s sleeper hit. Not Forgotten is being released on a limited run, and is opening exclusively in Phoenix at the AMC Deer Valley 30. It is a shame that more audiences will not get a chance to see what could quite easily be one of the best thrillers of the year, based on a unique script and creepy visuals that just may keep you up at night

Perry (both African Americans) raised the question of racism. The farmers untied under the direction of their leader, Rufina Juarez. An attorney was hired and a long, drawn out court case ensued. While the story is fascinating, and was quite newsworthy in Southern California at the time, the movie itself is as much about the garden as it is the people, and how uniting for a common cause can show the true power of the human spirit.

The same elegance and delicate balance follow through on the palate, which combines crispness and softness with a hint of vanilla.

Pillar Box, South Australia (blend) Blend of 65% Shiraz, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Merlot. Dark color and a vibrant purple hue. Bright aromas of blue and dark berry fruit entwined with licorice, spearmint and cigar box complexity. Palate is rich and fleshy, with flavors of fresh blackcurrant and blueberry fruit combined with orange rind, dark chocolate and spicy smoky oak characters. ROJO, Spain 100% Tempranillo. Cherry red color with violet shimmer, denoting its youth. Very intense aromas of red and black fruit permeate the nose, and follow through to the palate. It is an elegant wine with a certain freshness. The fruit flavors linger in the long finish. Layer Cake, Australia Dark, dense and creamy, complex aromas of black plum, bing cherry blackberry and pepper merge with licorice, tobacco, mocha and dark chocolate this is one inky Shiraz; an explosion of dark super ripe wild blackberry, touch of cigar box finishing with a mélange of exotic spices. Vino Dei Fratelli, Italy This young wine, bottled in the same year it is produced, has an intense ruby red color, with light violet reflections. during the first week of June, and hopefully, I’ll have some of your comments to add. Cheers!

By Nathan Mears

As the weather heats up and the white wines begin to flow in the Arizona desert, I begin to think “I need a glass of New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc”. Their wines are absolutely refreshing and perfect for life here in the valley, but I can’t help wondering: What about the rest of the wines from New Zealand? It seems as if everyone enjoys at least a little Kiwi Sauvignon Blanc, and a few of us more adventurous types may even savor a little Pinot Noir from Central Otago -- but anything else . . . Why not have a dry, crisp glass of Marlborough Riesling? Or a bold Cabernet or Syrah from Hawkes Bay? I often think of drinking imported wines as a small window into the culture and people of that country; a vacation in a glass you might say. So I ask myself: Is New Zealand a one or two wine adventure? Let’s find out together. Grab a few of your wine-drinking friends, and let’s take a trip to New Zealand without the 18-hour flight. I’ll do the same, we’ll all have a good time, and maybe even learn a little in the process. I have recommended an ‘itinerary’; it includes both islands, six regions, and suggested varietals. If you have any questions about producers, where to find the wines, or if you’d like to tell me about your vacation ‘in a glass’, please e-mail me at nate@ sportsmans4wine.com. This adventure will be the ‘homework’ we all wished for in school. Once we’ve all had our little whakangahau (that’s Māori for party, but I can’t pronounce it,) I’ll revisit the wines of New Zealand

The Night Owl If you have an entertainment event or item to include in “The Night Owl” send to brent.diggins@azweeklymagazine.com “The Night Owl” will cover restaurants, clubs, bars, celebrities, music and other miscellaneous events.

BY BRENT DIGGINS AND EFIA MOORE That’s it, I’m officially excited. We, the Night Owls, will shed some light on our identities and the concert of the YEAR that I’ve been looking forward to is a mere couple of weeks away. Who is it? Someone you will have never guessed, and probably never even heard of. In addition to that nugget, learn about a summer vacation option and a sushi restaurant that we recommend. We always get questions like “who are you guys?” so we’ll do a quick write-up on that. It is pretty interesting, actually. At any rate, for all that happened, is happening and will happen in the Valley, keep on reading. Summer Vacation (Sort of): I’ve been trying to plan a trip to get out of Arizona for months, calling all of my friends pitching them on cheap vacation ideas. My first choice destination was México, but thanks to some horror movie border violence stories gracing the 5, 6 and 10 news, a weakened economy, and a global flu pandemic, all my vacation commitments have dried up. I’ve resolved to keep my grand summer vacation in state, but that doesn’t mean I’ll be giving up any of my vacations plans. I’m still going to go on a cruise except it will be on my friend’s boat out one of Arizona’s lakes. I’m going to pretend that a cabana at the Valley Ho or Mondrian is a luxurious Mexican resort. Instead of snorkeling I’m going to visit the Wildlife World Aquarium. I’m going to sip wine instead of margaritas at Northern Arizona wineries like Alcantara Vineyards in Verde Valley and Dos Cabezas near Tucson. I might even visit one of the Gila River Casinos to try my luck. Either way I’m going to make the best of what Arizona has to offer and take my exotic vacation next year. I hope. fun.: Britney Spears, U2, Justin Timberlake, Eric Clapton; all good concerts, but the concert I’m looking forward to most this year is coming up on May 24th. Who is it? fun. That’s right, the band fun. (yes lowercase with a period after it… like fun. ) Fronted by ex-Format member Nate Ruess, fun., from what has been released, has the same “desert pop” sound that made the Format, a native Arizona band, my favorite band to have arrived during the past decade. The Format’s album “Dog Problems” is one of the best albums (you know those things that have 12 or more songs that you listen to from number 1 to 12 in order) that I have ever heard. So on to fun. Composed of Ruess, Andrew Dost from band Anathallo, and Jack Antonoff of Steel Train, fun. has only released one song so far, “At Least I’m Not as Sad as I Used to Be.” They have generated enough interest that the day that song was released, April 23rd, it had over 80,000 plays on myspace, and has nearly half a million plays today a few short weeks later. It isn’t really clear on when the full album will be released, but if I had to guess, I’d imagine at the end of their current tour. Why am I so excited about their show May 24th at the Clubhouse? For one, I get a little dose of the Format, but I’m

18

more excited to see the energy Ruess, one of the best frontman out there across all bands, generates here in Arizona…and I’m SUPER interested to see if the other half of the Format and Ruess’ ex musical partner, Sam Means, will be in attendance AND if he will play a role in the evenings musical festivities. If they were to even play one song together in Tempe on the 24th, my entire musical year would be made. I’m also pretty convinced that the conniving bastards in fun. named the band fun. to drive journalists, editors and computer grammar checking mechanisms across the world bonkers. For more info visit myspace.com/fun Hana: For being a Night Owl I don’t go out to eat much. It’s not that I don’t enjoy trying new foods and restaurants; it’s just that I hate to be disappointed with an over-hyped place. Plus, I always like to try a lot of things so my bill never manages to stay with in my budget. However, I did treat myself to a sushi lunch at Hana Japanese Eatery recently and I was astounded at how fresh and inexpensive it was. Hana’s rolls range from $5.00 to $11.50, and the large portion entrées are around $10 on their lunch menu. The food is artfully crafted making it as good to eat, as it is to enjoy. I ordered a cucumber roll and their pork Gyoza or Japanese Pan steamed dumplings, both exceed my expectations. I noticed quite a few lunch guests had the “boxed” Bento lunch that comes with salad, rice and assorted side dishes. Next time I stop in for lunch I’m getting the Hana Bento which comes with six pieces of sashimi including tuna, salmon, the chef’s choice, a California roll, shrimp and vegetable tempura and miso soup, $15.25. If you’re a sushi lover and want to experience more Japanese fare the Night Owl encourages you to try Hana for lunch or dinner, just remember to BYOB. hanajapaneseeatery.com Ebony and Ivory: Ah, like the keys of a piano we work in perfect harmony. BAR WARS Library Creates Ultimate Industry Night

OK, we’re all familiar with a typical lame industry night promotion. That’s where bartenders or servers show a pay stub and get 20% off an overpriced drink, right? Well, the Library Bar & Grill does nothing lame and in good baseball trendy fashion has shot this Industry Night full of steroids. If you work for a living, here’s your night. They call it BAR WARS. It’s not a take-off on Star Wars, but a war-like military theme. The reason is because it is a WAR. It’s your group against other groups for the $100 Bar Tab prize. The group that has the most people show up from 8pm to close wins a $100 bar tab for the following week. Simple. In most bars a $100 tab might not go too far, but at the Library, on BAR WARS Sundays, it can stretch to 100 drinks (Domestic beers are only a buck!). It’s not just for servers and bartenders. capacity. This includes police, fire, military, salon, bands, entertainers, taxis, limousines, chefs, kitchen staff, movie theater staff, government employees, teachers, and anyone else who serves the public. There’s even a special category for sports teams (softball teams that like to party after the games, take note). You won’t spend much on drinks! Drinks are cheap, Cheap, CHEAP on Sundays, 8pm to close during Bar Wars. $1 domestic drafts, $2 domestic bottled beers, $3 calls and imports, $4 munchies until midnight, $5 premium calls for starters. Other drink specials will be called out by Pete, the “Human Jukebox” who is pumping out an allrequest evening of tunes. There will be tons of games that are fun to play in a bar including Wii, trivia contests, Stupid Human Tricks and lots of surprises. It all starts this Sunday, May 17th. If you would like to register your team and compete for the $100 bar tab, please contact Jake or Natalie at the Library Bar & Grill. Call (480) 929-9002.

Bobbie Thomas ‘Embraces’ Venus ‘Spa Breeze’

Recently, E! Entertainment red carpet Hostess and Today Show style consultant Bobbie Thomas was in Phoenix to promote the new Venus Spa Breeze disposable women’s razor, and some other health and beauty items that comprise her fresh summer message of ‘Double Duty Beauty’. “I love products and messages that empower women; there are so few brands when you

AZWeeklyMagazine.com

mention it, people say, ‘Oh, I love those!’- I get positive feedback wherever I go,” she says of Venus Spa Breeze, the first disposable razors with shave gel bars. “I’m so grateful I get to do this. Venus as a whole is extremely inventive and interactive. They really ask consumers what their ideas are and have their finger on the pulse of what modern women are interested in.” “I am in a unique position because I am pitched hundreds of products each year. “I believe in this product because it is the best in field, and at the end of the day, you get what they claim. Men have all this technology in razors; it’s their territory in the market, it seems. For women, it’s great to know a company is researching a product that you use for more of your body than men do. They have figured out what’s going to be useful to women, and it turns an everyday experience into something special; you’re getting a little spa experience in your shower. Even in a down economy, there are certain ‘affordable indulgences’ that women deserve to treat themselves to. For women, I

want to bring them the latest and greatest. It’s not about $500 lip gloss, it’s about getting back to basics.” “A year of waxing can run $800 a year if not more; with the Venus Spa Breeze or the Venus Embrace, you can make your life easier by just upgrading your razor and not spending a lot. It’s a ‘pick me up you can pick up’. You just have to add water. Look, your skin is the largest organ in your body; soft, sexy legs are a huge plus. Guys love soft skin. And neither razor is limited to indoor use. You can bring a bottle of water on a camping trip and be glamorous in the woods. 4 refills cost you about $12. For one year, you’re spending about $50, which is one half the cost of a facial or a salon treatment.” Next Week: Bobbie’s ‘Double Duty Beauty’ for the Modern Woman

Review and picture by Chad Haire

With sales of the Mini Cooper very high, Volvo decided to come out with their version of a compact sporty coupe to compete, called the C-30. It’s based on the S-40 sedan, but is smaller and over 300 pounds lighter. This is a nice-looking car, and that large rear window adds to the style. Unfortunately, it allows the sun to heat the cabin and gives thieves a broad look at stored cargo. But fashion rules. The engine is a 2.5 liter turbo, cranking out 227 horsepower. This powerplant is very smooth, yet has brisk acceleration. The 6-speed manual gearbox is flawless and a joy to operate. An automatic shifter is offered. Gas mileage is rated at 19-28 mpg. I could not verify this, but the fuel gauge moved very slowly, which is a good sign.

The steering is light, but has good feel, and the brakes are nice and firm. Handling is sporty, but the ride is firm, with lots of tire rumbling. I had the 2.0 model with sport suspension. I am told the base 1.0 car with standard suspension is smoother; something to check out on your test drive. The cabin is nothing fancy, but all materials are of nice quality with clean workmanship. Older Volvo cars once had oversized buttons and switches for operation with winter gloves, but it seems they are not doing this anymore. The only gripe I had was with the optional aluminum trim on the shift knob and steering wheel. Looks cool, but after sitting in the sun, feels hot! The base car starts at $22,700. The sport is $25,700. Loaded with metallic paint, fog lights, cruise, and special trim, we hit $27, 950.

Great White In Town To Bite Great White, the Southern California blues-rock band first took a “bite” out of the rock scene in 1984 and since then has achieved worldwide success, encompassing sales of over 10 million records. They received a Grammy Award nomination for Best Hard Rock Performance for the song “Once Bitten, Twice Shy” and earned a double platinum certification for the album “…Twice Shy”. The soulful, blues-based signature sound that turned songs like “Face The Day”, “Rock Me” and “Save Your Love” into international hits, can also be found on the newer songs mixed by the band’s keyboard player Michael Lardie. The late 80’s were boom years for the band, marked by non-stop touring with some of the biggest bands of the era and playing also in Europe and Japan. For more than 25 years, Great White have distanced themselves from their peers by refusing to put style ahead of substance. They do it again on Rising, their second studio album of the new millennium, and a compelling musical statement that blends blues-hued roots with an innate sense of rhythm and melody. It’s called rock and roll, and Great White still deliver it with every bit

of the grit, texture, swagger and soul that has defined their sound since their rise to prominence in the late-‘80s. Rising marks a return to form for Great White – It may be their eleventh studio album, but it is also their first album in more than a decade that was written and recorded together as a band.

KEEL Protects The “Right To Rock”

sold over 2 million albums and was proclaimed Best New Band by Metal Edge Magazine, Circus Magazine, and Rock Scene.

“The Right To Rock” still echoes the sentiments of a generation and remains one of the defining anthems of 80’s Heavy Metal Music. And KEEL,

Just like old times, things are happening fast and furious now that the Reunion is in full swing. KEEL has signed a recording contract with one of hard rock’s heaviest hitters – Maryland-based Chavis Records – with plans to release a new KEEL CD this summer; they are confirmed for a prime slot on the Main Stage at Rocklahoma 2009 as well as South Texas Rock Fest 2009; Universal is re-releasing their classic albums “The Final Frontier” and “KEEL” for download within the next few weeks; and they are being embraced by corporate sponsors such as Monster Energy Drinks.

In a continuing spree of top rock shows Club Red is bringing the iconic bands Great White and KEEL to the stage on May 22nd. Great White has now passed the 10 million album mark and KEEL is celebrating their 25th anniversary reunion tour. For those who complain about the price of tickets and concessions at major concert venues, this Club Red concert is sure to please and should be packed. Where else can you get a beer, walk a few steps and be 5 feet away from bands that once filled arenas. The opportunity to see such high-level touring bands in an intimate venue (with incredible sound), should not be missed. As always, a powerful lineup of great local bands leads up to the powerful climax as these two rocking acts duel it out for Rock –n- Roll supremacy at Club Red. Don’t miss it. For ticket information, see CLUB RED ad on page 47 of this issue

“It was definitely our intention to show a few different sides of Great White,” continues Lardie. “It’s funny for me to think that people don’t know the variance in lead singer Jack Russell’s vocals. He grew up on the Beatles and, if anything, he should have been a pop singer based on what he cut his teeth on. It wasn’t until later that he discovered the Stones, Aerosmith and Zeppelin, and that’s where he really found his niche. But he’s always had a pop sensibility, he’s definitely got it in him, and I’m glad we were able to bring it out and show that aspect of him as a singer.”

the band that created it, is finally delivering what fans everywhere have been clamoring for: The KEEL Reunion. 2009 marks the band’s th 25 anniversary, and the passing of twenty years since the classic KEEL lineup performed on stage together. In 1985, “The Right To Rock” became the fastest-selling debut album in A&M Record’s history. The title track was a hit on radio & MTV and remains a staple on VH1 Classic, in addition to the group’s subsequent hits “Tears Of Fire,” “Because The Night,” “ S o m e b o d y ’s Waiting,” and “Rock & Roll Outlaw.” They developed a reputation as one of the genre’s most entertaining live acts, opening for heavyweights like Bon Jovi, Aerosmith, Van Halen, and many others. Despite numerous opportunities, Ron Keel has resisted the pressure to perform as KEEL with a different line-up. “It would not have been right,” expresses Ron. “Even though it was my last name, KEEL was a true band and I have always taken a stand against performing under that name with different musicians.” KEEL is documenting the entire experience on video for an upcoming 25th Anniversary DVD release. The band wants to thank the fans that have kept the dreams and the music alive. It’s been a long time coming, but well worth the wait.

The events are sponsored by Kokopelli Wines and proceeds benefit the St. Mary’s Food Bank. and Demetri Sahnas always create a magical and intimate Mediterranean style that perfectly compliments the powerful Jazz-Fusion of their popular Phoenix based group, Turning Point. “Sahnas”, as the brothers are collectively known, has enthralled thousands of people at clubs and arts/craft festivals throughout the Southwest with their unique hybrid sound. Margo Reed is widely regarded as the icon of Valley female vocalists. She moved into the Valley in the mid 70’s seeking

a better climate for her son. Her move triggered the Reed’s family exodus from Kankakee, Illinois, including her everpopular sister, Francine Reed. The feisty Ms. Margo is known for her “in the pocket” swing as well as “love mushy” ballads, profound message songs, down-in- the-gutter blues, “Sugar in My Bowl” and “I’m an Evil Gal” to name but two. Margo will be backed by Jazz Alive, including popular Jazz pianist Joel Robin and saxophonist Jerry Donato. Both Events are sponsored

by Kokopelli Wines and are fundraisers for St. Mary’s Food Bank. Tickets are $20.00 for both concerts and can be purchased at www.Ticketforce.com or (877) 840-0457. This is a rain or shine event; blankets and or lawn chairs are suggested. To avoid confusing people thinking that Ozzy would be at the mic, the band wisely chose to re-name themselves after their 1980 album of the same name when they went under the Black Sabbath name. Make no mistake though, this is unmistakably Dio-era Black Sabbath. The artwork depicts pretty much what you can expect; dark, gloomy, evil sounds that the grandfathers of metal have brewed up for 2009. They’re not trying to be nu-metal, but they don’t have to either. Although not as sludgy as 1992’s Dehumanizer, it still lacks the energy and luster of 1980’s Heaven And Hell. Considering all but drummer Vinny Appice are in their 60’s, this is still pretty potent material. The single “Bible Black” is an instant classic while “Fear”, “Eating The Cannibals” and “Neverwhere” continue to establish the legacy of the band. Tony Iommi’s tone rocks and his leads are as smoking as ever, Geezer Butler’s bass is awesome as usual, Appice’s drums lay down the solid ground that works for this line up. And Ronnie James Dio? Rumored to be turning 69(!) in July, quite simply he is solid, blowing away guys half his age. He can more than deliver the goods at this point in his career. Heaven And Hell carries on with their tradition of solid, good melodies while unleashing bone crushing riffs. Without Black Sabbath (or by any other name) the world of metal as we know it would be a very different place.

Mesa- Grammy winners Amy Ray and Emily Saliers of the Indigo Girls perform on Sunday May 17th at 8pm.

Phoenix- “King of the Dogs,” the lead single from Iggy Pop’s forthcoming album Préliminaires, was released digitally on May 5th through AZWeeklyMagazine.com

all digital retailers including Amazon, iTunes and Rhapsody. Rolling Stone included the song on their “Hot List” calling it “Magnifique,” and adding that “on this Big Easy-style single from his French-novel-inspired new disc, Ig gets his Tom Waits on.” “King of the Dogs” was inspired by New Orleans style jazz, with an arrangement featuring trumpet, trombone and clarinet. “At one point, I just got sick of listening to idiot thugs with guitars banging out crappy music,” says Iggy. “I’ve started listening to a lot of New Orleans-era, Louis Armstrong, Jelly Roll Morton type of jazz.” Look for the full album on Tuesday June 2nd.
