How many people have their trusted garage door repair company’s phone number saved in their phone? I mean, if they’re really good, you don’t need them…right? There are over 200 garage door repair companies in the Phoenix Valley and they all claim to be the best and the cheapest with the highest quality equipment. I did some research and talked to some “experts” to find out a solution to my squeaky and lopsided door.

$225. I asked each of the companies what the difference was between the two quotes and there wasn’t any. Some people just list to charge more I guess.

The first thing everyone told me was “DON’T DO IT YOURSELF!!!” It’s a very dangerous job and there is absolutely no need to end up in a hospital. I was also told that when people try to fix it themselves and then call a professional, the rate is typically 4 times as much. A quick $200 fix can turn into a $1000 fix because they have to undo what the homeowner tried to do. I called the BBB to check out some ratings and that narrowed my search quite a bit. Don’t settle for anything less than an A+ rating with the BBB. They have never steered me wrong, so why not trust them now? I also wanted to see who’s been in business the longest. 4 months of experience just doesn’t do it for me, but when they have over a dozen trucks and have been in business longer than 10 years, I feel like they’re doing something right. It came down to 3 different companies for me based on the criteria above. I had three different quotes with one of them telling me I needed a whole new door and opener. The other two told me that they could fix the tracks, add a little lubricant, tighten some screws and I would be as good as new. I believed this was the way to go, but one wanted to charge me $499 while the other was

The company that was honest and offered the same warranty but was over 50% less was A-Authentic Garage Doors. On top of it, they were available 24 hours a day to fix my garage, although I had it done at 4pm. They also offered me same day service and guaranteed their work.

I found out after the job was done that A-Authentic was tested on Dateline…. twice! They passed the honesty test with flying colors. They are also the exclusive garage door company for Rosie on the House, a trusted home improvement show for the past 25 years. They have won awards throughout the valley including a Super Service Award with Angie’s List. I asked Darrell, the owner of A-Authentic, what his policy was for his business and he started throwing back words like Integrity, Honesty and Reliable. It was nice to hear. I understand that people have choices when it comes to getting their garage doors fixed, and I would suggest you do your own research before you find the company that best fits your needs. In my experience, with the longevity of his company, the large number of trucks he has, and his awards and ratings with the BBB, I felt he was best for me. On top of that, the job was done right and I don’t anticipate calling him…or any other garage door company for a long time…or at least until my neighbor’s kid decides to back into it.

And you thought your family was Heather dysfunctional? Graham Mom locks her kids in the attic, incest is a way of life, and Grandma poisons a grandson. In Lifetime’s “Petals on the Wind,” airing Monday, May 26, betrayal is high art. But just because the adults are felonious and creepy, it doesn’t mean they shouldn’t dress well. After all, they have appearances to keep up. In January’s “Flowers in the Attic,” the mother, Corinne (Heather Graham), was a widow with four children. Her kids thought they had no family, since that’s what they had been told, but Mama takes them to Olivia (Ellen Burstyn), her very wealthy mother. Their saga continues in “Petals,” as Corinne resumes the life of luxury quite easily. Despite hideous private lives, they look great in public. Corrine is a socialite, and she dresses the part in this metallic number she wore to a Christmas party at the mansion.

When a man’s act includes whipped cream and pie tins for his feet and cakes worn on his arms like so many edible bracelets, chances are he is not going to win an Emmy. Throw in balloons and a kazoo, and it’s clear there’s only one place on network television where he could even find a moment’s notoriety: “America’s Got Talent.” NBC’s summer hit returns for a ninth season Tuesday, May 27. That man, auditioning at New York’s Madison Square Garden, represents why this show differs from other talent contests. Nowhere else would he even make it onstage. Here the judges engage him. “I don’t mean any offense by this, but have you been on medication?” Howard Stern asks. The man says yes. Later, while crews clean up the stage, making it usable for the dancers, bands and comedians who will try to get the judges to pass them on to the next round, the judges relax backstage. Heidi Klum and Mel B share a blanket to cover their legs; the room is freezing. “Can I buzz before they start?” Klum says. “That was one of the most ridiculous things I have ever seen.” But the judges say they have seen plenty of truly talented hopefuls during the auditions. “The danger category has been pretty good,” Stern says. “The couple with the knife throwing – that’s sticking with me.” “This is the year of the little kid,” Howie Mandel says. The four had already sat through days of auditions in Los Angeles, New Jersey and New York and were reviewing some of the acts that stuck with them. But the acts Mandel remembered didn’t register with Stern. “We have created a safe environment for talent,” Stern says. “The talent this year feels safer and more willing to audition.” This season also brings the golden buzzer, which each judge is allowed to use just once during the auditions. It’s a magic save, even if the other three vote against the act.

Driver gets wrecked, becomes overwhelmed with fury and races towards the driver deemed responsible. It’s a fact of life in the high-stakes world of stock car racing and comes with a long history of intense feuds, both on and off the track. Let’s take a look at some of the most notorious beefs and battles the sport of racing has seen throughout the years. Those under the millions of watchful eyes fans eagerly follow with mega doses of fiery interest and opinion. Enter….

SPENCER VS. BUSCH

RACE! SECTION

FIERY FEUDS TO REV UP YOUR RACING MOOD! AUGUST 8th 2003 This epic feud was in its fourth round before Jimmy Spencer (left) delivered the final blow against Kurt Busch (right). Two years after the duo first clashed right here in Phoenix (and each retaliated at separate venues), Busch “ran out of gas” in front of Spencer’s hauler at Michigan and revved his engine to add even more fuel to the fire. To show his displeasure, Spencer rammed Busch’s car and allegedly socked him a good one, right in the kisser. Perhaps the most intriguing part of the rivalry… the following two quotes: “(Spencer’s) a decrepit old has-been — a never was — who has the brain of a peanut,” by Busch, and “We don’t forget.

to the challenge and will help the company achieve a record-setting second consecutive Million Dollar May.

Illustrating the History of the Photographic Book

Last year, General Director Ryan Taylor took the helm of the struggling company, leading a successful campaign to raise $1 million in May of 2013, with 100% participation of its Board of Trustees, Staff, and patrons. Since then, the Opera embarked on its 2013-14 Season and just weeks ago, announced a major multi-year title sponsorship with CopperPoint Mutual, which will further assist the Opera’s efforts to fully eliminate its accumulated deficit. The Opera recently announced its new 2014-15 Season including the world’s first Mariachi opera, Cruzar la Cara de la Luna, a new production of the Tchaikovsky masterpiece Eugene Onegin and crowd pleasing masterpieces of Rigoletto, The Magic Flute and The Daughter of the Regiment.

The latest photography exhibition at Phoenix Art Museum walks visitors through the five-step process involved in the creation of a photographic book. On display are fifteen books published from 1930 to 2013 by nine celebrated photographic artists including Ansel Adams, Edward Weston, Richard Avedon, and W. Eugene Smith. As a vocal proponent of the photographic book, American photographer Ansel Adams helped pave the way for photographers to embrace the book as a medium to organize, disseminate, and promote their work. Presented alongside the books themselves are archive objects— including proposals, correspondence, drafts, expense reports, and marketing plans— to help illustrate the artists’ role in every aspect of a book from design to production. •as “The Bachelorette,” what is it like for you to again be in the process that you sampled from the other side on “The Bachelor”?

by DAVID IVES

Obviously, I got a little taste of it last season, so I knew what I was coming into ... but sometimes you can’t help but just throw your hands up and laugh about it. You would drive yourself crazy otherwise. There is definitely no control and no routine.

arizona premiere may 1 – 18, 2014

•What have you taken from that and applied to being “The Bachelorette”?

All I can guarantee is to be authentic, to feel what I’m feeling, and to try to express that as much as possible. There are definitely good moments and bad moments, but I’m me ... and I feel that if there’s anything at all that I can take away from this, it’s that I was true to myself. And I’m seeing myself throughout all of this.

‘The Love Punch’ Pierce Brosnan and Emma Thompson play a divorced couple that, after an unscrupulous businessman steals their pension, reunites to steal it back. (PG-13 - 95 minutes) In‘Star Wars: Episode V-The Empire Strikes Back’ (1980) a potato and a shoe can be seen in the asteroid field!

Stan Robinson on Twitter!

Stan: Having the air of an old fashion ‘comedy romp’ with ‘over the top’ eclectic characterizations, ‘The Love Punch’ is a 90 minute breezy break with a familiar cast who seem to be actually having a fun time as we are lead to the predictable ending, with more than a few zany moments along the way. Joseph: “The Love Punch” is just one “Benny Hill” theme away from absolute absurdity. The new comedic caper is occasionally kind of charming thanks to its charismatic cast but it is much more often outrageous and outlandish as its characters trip over one another (and themselves) yet still manage to save the day while rekindling their relationship.

Agata Trzebuchowska plays a young novitiate nun in 1960s Poland who is on the verge of taking her vows when she discovers a dark family secret dating back to the years of the Nazi occupation. (PG-13 - 80 minutes) Stan: With black & white static scene shots, tightly stitched characters, and a stark reminder of my own search for identity, this latest film from writer/director Pawel Pawlikowski, who’s last film ‘The Woman in the Fifth’ (2011) is a favorite, once again presents an intriguing theme: Often one has to go full circle to arrive at that all important point of finality to move forward. Randy: It has been a while since there has been a really good film released. ‘Ida’ is easily one of the best films of 2014 so far and is a strong contender come awards season (if it is not forgotten). It is always nice to get releases of this caliber mid-year, but they are often disregarded in the fall. Director Pawlikowski has done an amazing job with a talented cast in a visually bleak film that packs an emotional punch. Herb: Without a doubt one of the most gorgeous films of the year, with amazing black and white cinematography haunting this tale of loss, pain and mystery. The film expertly captures the miasma of early 1960’s Poland, the dark secrets buried there and the people left behind to deal with them. This is a mesmerizing work from start to finish.

FILM! COVER STORY

‘X-Men: Days of Future Past’

SOUNDBITE SPOTLIGHT The following quotes were pulled from interviews conducted by AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s film columnists with talent speaking on behalf of movies recently released in theaters.

Writer/Director Pawel Pawlikowski (‘Ida’) By Stan Robinson “It’s a story that has been in the back of my mind for years and the desire to make a film in Poland set in the 60s. It’s my first film in Polish. I left Poland when I was 14 and I’ve gone back to live there now so the film is part of a big life’s journey, going full circle and not just to Poland but also to the 60s when I first became aware of the world, so it’s a return in many ways. I am in my 50’s now and a bit more reflective about things. “We filmed for 39 days and I tried to shoot the film chronologically so that the theme would progress naturally, but the weather wreaked havoc so we couldn’t shoot like we wanted. It wasn’t a very expensive film, the budget was around $1.7 million, and

at the same time I didn’t have a lot of technology involved in shooting, and as you say, I didn’t move the camera and didn’t have cranes or cherry pickers for lights so what I saved in technology and equipment, I used for spreading it out in time so it was quite a generous shooting schedule. I shot one scene in the morning and one in the afternoon or night. “Shooting in black and white, using a lot of ambient sound, and I was rewriting the script as we were shooting. I keep writing all the time, writing during rehearsing, writing during location scouting, and writing during filming, which gave the film a flavor all its own.” - Pawel Pawlikowski AZWeeklyMagazine.com

Jill Flint stars in “The Night Shift,” premiering Tuesday on NBC.

LOng day at

‘the night Shift’

O

utside, it’s a cool mid-October day in Albuquerque, N.M., but inside, it’s all Texas for visiting press. NBC’s new medical drama “The Night Shift” is in production for its Tuesday, May 27, premiere, and the financially strapped San Antonio Memorial Hospital has come to life inside a soundstage. The operating rooms may be a bit spacious, everything’s rather clean, and one of the supply cabinets is illuminated in a particularly “X-Files” shade of green – and one storage bin is inexplicably labeled “VICE GRIP” – but if one didn’t know better (or look up), it’s easy to forget that it’s not actually a hospital emergency room. Created by Gabe Sachs and Jeff Judah, “The Night Shift” focuses on Dr. TC Callahan (Irish actor Eoin Macken), who has just finished three grueling tours of duty as a combat surgeon in Afghanistan. He lands in San Antonio, along with best pal Topher (Ken Leung), an ER specialist who helped soldiers injured in battle, and Army doctor protege Drew (Brendan Fehr). TC’s new boss on the 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. shift is his ex-girlfriend, Dr. Jordan Alexander (Jill Flint), whose new fiance, trauma surgeon Dr. Scott Collins (Scott Wolf ), arrives from Dallas for a visit and sticks around for a while on the day shift. Also on the team are new doctors Paul (Robert Bailey Jr.) and Krista (Jeananne Goossen), psychiatrist Dr. Landry de la Cruz (Daniella Alonso), and seasoned nurse Kenny (JR Lemon). Presiding over the facility is Michael Ragosa (Freddy Rodriguez), who works the administrative side of medicine – and frequently works TC’s last nerve. And, according to TC’s real-life alter ego, that’s not especially hard to do. “He’s actually dark,” says Macken, settled into a couch in a lounge that features a basket of stuffed animals (Lemon and Fehr, in particular, seemed to enjoy a little furry cuddle during some group interviews). “I like the darkness part of it. He’s actually a deeply flawed character. “He’s quite emotive, but when he is, it’s quite extreme. He’s got this disruption. There’s a very fragmented psyche, which is fun, but he’s also quite charismatic, so I’m not walking around playing this morose guy. So he’s actually quite fun. “A lot of it comes from his past, to do with family and relationships. For TC ... every single person he saves becomes a very personal project, because he has to save everybody. “In a way, doing that abdicates him of any kind of guilt he has from aspects of his past, which makes him a wonderful doctor but makes everything very extreme. It can be tiring, but it also means there are a lot of places to go with it, which is fun.” AZWeeklyMagazine.com

The Swordfish is a southwest inspired skillet dish that incorporates Mexican flavors; while the Grilled Yellow Fin Tuna is lighter in flavor and served on a bed of fresh, local vegetables.

PATRON SAINTS OF BEER How did important religious personages become the patron saints of various things related to beer? Both universal and local Saints have reportedly performed miracles, either during their lives or afterwards, that involved the working class people and beer. Other saints were designated because they represent beer producing and consuming regions. Centuries ago beer was the daily drink of the people, both because plain water was often polluted and due to beer’s inexpensive, nourishing qualities. Monks brewed beer for themselves as a safe source of hearty sustenance. Monk’s meals were frugal at best, particularly during fast periods. However, consumption of liquids did not break the fast. Without widespread hotel chains, monasteries served as inn’s for travelers who shared the monk’s provisions, especially their robust, sustaining beers. Eventually, the monks were able to also sell their beers at pubs called klosterschenken, and a flourishing trade developed. To build brand loyalty, the names of the monastery’s patron saint was used. To this day many beers bear the name of a saint.

Augustine of Hippo, now part of Tunisia, who was born in 345 AD, was known for wild living and significant alcoholic beverage consumption prior to his conversion. His complete turnaround and life of moderation contributed to his becoming a patron saint of brewers.

The procedure which the church uses to name a saint, called canonization, has only operated since the tenth century. Prior to that, since the first century, saints were chosen by public acclaim. While this may have been fairer to the general public, it included information that was both legend or fictitious, and eventually the Vatican assumed the authority for approving saints. Among the patron saints of brewers, four are extremely well known: Augustine of Hippo, Luke the Apostle, Nicholas of Myra (also known as Saint Nicholas, or Santa Claus) and the Good King Wenceslas, the latter two also providing a linkage to the winter season of merriment.

Saint Luke who lived during the first century is widely regarded as a patron saint of brewers although there is no obvious reason. Possible connections include his being a physician and knowing that the beer of the time was healthier than the water of the time, and his ability to mix various herbs together for medicines just as they were mixed for beer.

Nicholas of Myra, Turkey is believed to have lived in first half of 4th century, and died between 342 and 350 AD. St. Nicholas is associated with the legend of the Three Clerics, a drama about 3 church scholars who stopped for lodging at an inn, where the innkeeper slew them for their money. A disguised Nicholas invoked God’s help to resurrect them and, by doing so, became a protector over travelers and brewers.

Saint Wenceslas, born in the early 900s AD, promoted the spread of Christianity in Czechoslovakia. Wenceslas became famous through a Christmas carol by J.M. Neale, “Good King Wenceslas”, which has Continued On Page 30...

...Continued from page 28 little to do with history but more with Victorian ideals. Because Bohemian hops were so valued, Wenceslas ordered the death penalty for anyone caught exporting the cuttings and obviously endeared himself to the local hop growers and brewers. He became the patron saint of Bohemia and Czechoslovakia and his crown became the symbol of nationalism for the Czechs. By extension he became a patron saint of Czech brewers. There also was King Wenceslas II in the 13th century, who convinced the Pope to revoke an order banning the brewing of beer, again endearing the Wenceslas name to local brewers. King Gambrinus is revered by many brewers as a patron saint. According to folk tales, Gambrinus was King of Flanders. Reputed to have invented hopped, malt beer, the legendary Gambrinus may have actually been Jan Primus, Duke of Flanders, Brabant, Louvain, and Antwerp. Primus, according to the Encyclopedia of Beer, is credited with introducing the toast as a custom. Some others attribute Gambrinus to Jean Sans Peur, known as Ganbrivius. Although there is no evidence of him among the church listings of saints, Gambrinus, called the “King of Beer”, continues to be celebrated by brewers as a patron saint. Probably the best known Irish saint

after Patrick is Saint Brigidwho lived in the late part of the fifth century AD. Known as “the Mary of the Gael,” Brigid founded the monastery of Kildare and was known for spirituality, charity, and compassion. St. Brigid also was a generous, beer-loving woman. She worked in a leper colony which found itself without beer, “For when the lepers she nursed implored her for beer, and there was none to be had, she changed the water, which was used for the bath, into an excellent beer, by the sheer strength of her blessing and dealt it out to the thirsty in plenty.” Brigid is said to have changed her dirty bathwater into beer so that visiting clerics would have something to drink. Obviously this trait would endear her to many a beer lover. She also is reputed to have supplied beer out of one barrel to eighteen churches, which sufficed from Maundy Thursday to the end of paschal time. A poem attributed to Brigid in the Brussel’s library begins with the lines “I should like a great lake of ale, for the King of the Kings. I should like the family of Heaven to be drinking it through time eternal.” Saint Amandprimarily operated in the regions now considered northern France and Belgium. He established a score of monasteries, many of which likely produced beer. Considered the father of Belgian monasticism, he is associated with the centers of wine Continued On Page 32...

...Continued from page 30 growing and beer brewing. Because of his reputation for hospitality, Amand also is a patron saint of beer and wine merchants. Following the collapse of the roof of an abbey brewery in Flanders, Saint Arnold of Soissons asked God to multiply the stores of beer which were left for the monk’s consumption. When Arnold’s prayer was answered in abundance, the monks and townspeople were prepared to canonize him on the spot. While Arnold of Soissons is best known for his miraculous provision of beer, he is also credited with a most practical improvement upon the brewing process. While weaving bee skeps for the abbey’s apiary, the abbot realized that the straw cones could be used as a filter to further clarify the brother’s beer. In remembrance of this contribution to the brewer’s art, the saint is often portrayed--as on the certificates of the Belgian Brewers Confederation--in the company of bees with one hand resting upon a bee skep.

Arnold of Soissons also is considered the patron saint of hop pickers because of the region in which he preached. Hops originated in Brabant region of Belgium. They became more widespread when a Belgian princess married a Kentish prince and the dowry included land across from a brewery. Belgians reportedly sent the first hops to England for use in making beer.

Hildegard von Bingen was a benedictine nun, the Abbess of Diessenberg, and a well-known herbalist, mystic and musician. Although she has not yet been canonized, she has been beatified and is considered a saint by many people. Hildegard was a highly enlightened woman who overcame social, cultural, and gender barriers and became an advisor to bishops, popes, and kings. She used the curative powers of natural objects for healing, and wrote treatises about natural history and medicinal uses of plants, animals, trees and gemstones. Her writings include the earliest known reference to using hops in beer “(Hops), when put in beer, stops putrification and lends longer durability.” For many centuries, brewers have invoked the names of patron saints to bless and protect their beers. Since the early brewing process was not well understood, often times the batch of beer was not fit for drinking. The poor quality was mystically blamed on evil spirits and specifically on “brew witches” or “beer witches.” The last known burning of a beer witch was in the late 1500s. Now that we have vastly improved beer quality, when you quaff your next pint, consider the saintly company with which you are associating and who may be looking over you. May the Saints bless your pint.

“Don’t drink the water, drink beer” warned Saint Arnold of Metz, concerned about the dangers of drinking impure water. He believed that the polluted water caused illness, while the boiled and processed water used for beer was a safer alternative. According to legend he ended a plague when he submerged his crucifix into a brew kettle and persuaded people to drink only beer from that “blessed” kettle. He is reported to have said “From man’s sweat and God’s love, beer came into the world”.

Kanaan hopes newfound luck continues at Indy

Tony Kanaan

For 11 years, Tony Kanaan was known as the best driver never to win the Indianapolis 500. Indeed, the 2004 champion of the former Indy Racing League, 16-time IndyCar race victor and winner of last year’s “Greatest Spectacle in Racing” had experienced more than his share of bad luck on Indianapolis Motor Speedway’s 2.5-mile rectangular oval. There was his first race in his rookie year of 2002, when an oil slick from another car sent a front-running Kanaan spinning into a wall and out of the race. Then in 2007, a blown tire during a restart with 44 laps to go turned Kanaan’s first-place standing into a 12th-place finish. And of course, there was the failed fuel strategy gamble in 2010 that forced him to pit with four laps left, which dropped Full name: Antoine Rizkallah Kanaan Filho Birthplace: Salvador, Brazil Birth date: Dec. 31, 1974 Height/weight: 5 feet 5 inches/150 pounds Road to stardom: Competed in karts in Sao Paulo, winning city and national junior championships 198690 ... drove Formula series in Brazil and Europe (1991-96) and Indy Lights (1996-97) ... won Rookie of the Year honors in CART in 1998 ... joined IRL in 2002

In a highly competitive race that saw a record 68 lead changes — twice the previous mark — Kanaan slipped by Ryan Hunter-Reay on a restart with three laps to go to finally collect the victory and his Borg Warner Trophy. A rather anticlimactic finish, but the 39-year-old Brazilian would take it. “They’re finally going to put my ugly face on this trophy,” he joked afterward, Sunday, May 25, on ABC, he’ll vie at the venerable speedway with a new team (Chip Ganassi Racing), a new adviser (old friend and former teammate Dario Franchitti) and a win at Indy under his belt. SATURDAY The Flintstones 12 p.m. on FAM John Goodman stars as the gruff but lovable Fred Flintstone in this 1994 comedy based on the well-known cartoon. After Fred receives a job promotion, a corrupt executive and his assistant (Kyle MacLachlan, Halle Berry) attempt to frame him for embezzlement. The movie also stars Rick Moranis as Barney Rubble, Elizabeth Perkins as Wilma Flintstone and Rosie O’Donnell as Betty Rubble.

Bedtime Stories 10 p.m. on FAM Tall tales come to life, with some unexpected twists, in this enjoyable Disney vehicle for Adam Sandler. He plays a motel jack-of-all-trades who entertains his niece and nephew with fanciful stories — only to find them coming true, as when gumballs fall from the sky like raindrops. He then tries to manipulate his inventions to service his real life, a move that inevitably backfires. Keri Russell, Courteney Cox and Guy Pearce also appear.

SUNDAY

decision to seek another job — prompted by a desire to improve his love life — panics the talking animals who have been in his care. They conspire to keep him around, and if they sound familiar, there’s good reason: Voices are supplied by Adam Sandler (also one of the film’s producers), Cher, Sylvester Stallone and Nick Nolte.

TUESDAY Teen Beach Movie 4:05 p.m. on DISN Faced with leaving the beach she loves, young surfer Mack (Maia Mitchell) goes out to ride one last wave with her boyfriend, Brady (Ross Lynch). A storm transports the couple back to 1962 and into a beach movie, where they’re in for a bit of culture shock. Garrett Clayton and Grace Phipps also star in this tuneful, tween-friendly 2013 confection from the Mouse House.

WEDNESDAY My Man Godfrey 5 p.m. on TCM A madcap debutante learns some of the finer points of life from an Austrian diplomat posing as her butler in this uneven 1957 remake of a 1936 screwball classic, with June Allyson and David Niven stepping into the stylish shoes of Carole Lombard and William Powell from the original. Jessie Royce Landis, Eva Gabor and Martha Hyer co-star.

Mulan 8 p.m. on DISN A Chinese maiden (voice of Ming-Na) disguises herself as a man to take her father’s place in battle against invading Huns in this colorful Disney animated adaptation of an Asian legend. The impressive voice cast also includes B.D. Wong, Miguel Ferrer, Harvey Fierstein, Beth Fowler and George Takei, but Eddie Murphy steals the show as the voice

Sky High 12 p.m. on TBS If you think it’s easy to be the child of superheroes, ask the young man (Michael Angarano) who’s in that situation in this comedy-fantasy from Disney. Kurt Russell and Kelly Preston play his superpowered dad and mom, who aren’t aware that he may lack their abilities as he enters a special school. A villain’s reappearance forces him to rise to the occasion. Costars include Lynda Carter, Danielle Panabaker and Bruce Campbell.

THURSDAY SpongeBob SquarePants 7:30 a.m. on NICK Sandy’s (voice of Carolyn Lawrence) heart is stuck in the Lone Star State in “Texas.” She is unhappy and homesick, so SpongeBob and Patrick (voices of Tom Kenny and Bill Fagerbakke) try their hardest to cheer her up. In “Walking Small,” Plankton (voice of Doug Lawrence) tries to get SpongeBob to behave in a drastically different manner.

FRIDAY Judy Moody and the NOT Bummer Summer 6:20 p.m. on DISN As the title of the adaptation of Megan McDonald’s book might suggest, if you’re over the age of 10 — and even that might be stretching it — this may not be your cup of tea. However, young viewers are likely to get a kick out of the adventures of Judy (Jordana Beatty) as her summer plans change radically. Her parents and friends are away, leaving her to mark the warm weather with an offbeat aunt (Heather Graham) who proves to be more fun than Judy bargained for.

A Fairly Odd Movie: Grow Up, Timmy Turner! 7:30 p.m. on NICK This feature-length adaptation of the cartoon “The Fairly OddParents” uses live action and animation to tell the tale of Timmy (Drake Bell), who’s now in his 20s but continues to act like a child to keep his fairy godparents, Cosmo and Wanda (Jason Alexander, Cheryl Hines). That becomes more difficult when he falls for a young woman (Daniella Monet) and has to rescue her from an evil tycoon (Steven Weber) who also has designs on the fairies.

Zookeeper 6 p.m. on FAM More or less a variation on “Doctor Dolittle,” this 2010 comedy casts Kevin James as the title character, whose

Checking in with Ron Funches The laugh is frequent, high-pitched, contagious and most of all, surprising. It erupts from Ron Funches, a really big African-American man, and he describes it as “sounding like an Asian princess.” Funches plays Shelly in NBC’s latest comedy, “Undateable,” premiering Thursday, May 29. Bill Lawrence (“Scrubs,” “Spin City,” “Cougar Town”) and Adam Sztykiel (“Due Date”) created a show about a bunch of guys who need remedial help in dating. The series is set in Detroit, where Shelly is the city’s biggest sports booster and wears only clothing with sports insignia. He does not seem to have demands on his time, such as a job. “Shelly is currently independently wealthy,” Funches says. “He works in music. I don’t know what capacity, but he is second generation.”

Every day there is something amazing recovered from the bottom of the ocean, often times airplanes, even Apollo 11 engines.
