I PLAY FOR YOU

Young Arts Supporters are the Donors of Tomorrow…and Today Whose face do you see when you talk about arts and culture donors and supporters? Spend some time at First Friday in downtown Phoenix and the answer may surprise you. The fastest-growing majority of the 25,000 or so who gather for the monthly Artlink-sponsored walking tour of more than 100 art-related galleries and spaces – now the largest event of its kind in the nation – are between 20 and 30 years old. “The whole idea of MyArtsCommunity.org is to attract a new base of young donors who support arts and culture for the same reasons that attracted their parents many years ago,” said Mike Cohn of CFG Business Solutions, who with Bob Delgado of Hensley and Company, came up with a concept to raise funds for arts and cultural organizations across the Valley. “In addition to their passion, creativity and enthusiasm, these young people also are comfortable using the Internet.” The six-week pilot campaign is designed to resonate among donors of all ages to contribute as little as $10 through the web site, MyArtsCommunity.org to help the Valley’s 16 largest arts and cultural organizations weather the economic storm.

Assistant Concertmaster: Dian D’Avanzo The Phoenix Symphony

“Young people may not be the largest contributors to arts and cultural organizations, but their collective donations can be significant,” Delgado said. “We won’t know if the campaign is successful until it’s over, but if it is, we’ll use it for a statewide campaign in the fall.” The campaign ends June 15.

Now it’s your turn to perform. No one has to remind you about the current economic crisis. But you may not be aware that the Valley’s arts and cultural organizations have been hit especially hard by budget cuts and are now in urgent need of our financial support. With a nominal donation of $10, $25, $50 or $100, you can participate in the Valley’s largest arts and cultural organizations at

a whole new level and help these valuable local assets endure these difficult times. Please visit MyArtsCommunity.org before June 15 to make your donation or call 602-682-2057 for more information or to pay by check. Help keep your local arts and cultural community alive.

Today’s living room is not the formal, seldom-used room of the past. The modern living room is used for a multitude of activities and interests - from playing video games to entertaining guests. By maximizing space in this popular area of the house, you can create a better living space, as well as adapt to changes such as downsizing from a home to an apartment, welcoming an adult child back to the nest or adding a roommate to save money. IKEA is the better choice in today’s economy with affordable products and tips to make the most out of your home while keeping it comfortable and stylish. Today, we’ll share tips on how to maximize the space in an important area of the home - the living room. Here’s some advice to help you live a better life at home: Put the “live” back in living room: When planning the living room space, consider the activities that are done in the living room on a daily basis. Do the furnishings in the room provide the right layout, amount of seating and storage need for each activity? If you’re always on your laptop while watching TV or setting up for impromptu parties, make sure you have a living room to match your personality. Consider the KLUBBO nesting tables that allow you

flexibility for extra surfaces and easily store away when not in use. Try not to focus all your energy on items that are meant for the holidays or special occasions. Reach new heights with storage: Modular storage gives the ability to add storage space vertically as collections of games, books and equipment grow. By stacking up toward the ceiling, you’ll free up floor space, which can allow you to get creative. Have you always wanted a home office or crafting station but never had the room? Once you get organized, the living room could be the perfect spot! Pick items that do double duty: Maximize storage by using furnishings that do double duty. Look for items that provide hidden storage or can function as additional seating, such as a footstool like the EKTROP BROMMA. A sofa bed with extra storage can be perfect for unexpected guests or if you’re downsizing into a smaller home. Also, pick pieces that can be shifted and reconfigured so they work in other floor plans. Make accessories additions to adapt: Keep up with changes in technology without having to update all your living room furniture by purchasing furnishings that can adapt. When making a new entertainment purchase such as a flat screen television, helpful add-on features can easily extend the life of your furnishings. Additions such as cable management accessories and remote-friendly glass doors and shelves add more value for the money.

Interview by Stan Robinson

The one aspect I appreciate about the assignment of movie reviewer and celebrity interviewer is speaking with the filmmakers of a project. In a rare opportunity, you can have that same experience of asking Adam Del Deo, the co-director with James D. Stern, your questions on the making of Every Little Step. Every Little Step opens on Friday, May 21st, at the Harkins Camelview Theatre (7001 E Highland Ave. Scottsdale, AZ). After the 7pm showing, Adam Del Deo will be present for a “Q &A”! Producing and directing a documentary is one of the most challenging aspects of filmmaking. Most of what is captured on film is unrehearsed and even

Adam: Altogether, it was almost a two-year process, with about 8 months of the auditions, some follow-up interviews with some of the original members of A Chorus Line. It took us over a year to edit the movie. A lot of our emphasis went into crafting the movie into a film that represented what it was like to struggle, have hope, and the sacrifice of the audition process. Stan: Your film also documents an important aspect of theatre history… Adam: That’s right, we also wanted to make sure that because A Chorus Line was such a seminal piece of theatre, winning the Pulitzer Prize, winning more Tony Awards than any

show in the American theatre at that point, we wanted to make sure that we gave the proper amount of weight to that aspect of the production. Stan: The Michael Bennett recordings, which tied the past production of the play to the present revival was an inspiring touch! Adam: Using the original Michael Bennett tapes, which no one had ever heard because they had been locked up in a vault for all these years, we knew it was something that was very unique that our audience hadn’t heard. Trying to integrate those into the film was a very intense process in trying to make the overall film work the way Jim (Stern) and I wanted. Stan: Documentary filmmaking is a unique process in and of itself, apart from traditional movie making. Adam: So true, you need to have a cameraman and a team that is very dedicated to putting in the time to shoot as much as possible because you never know when you’re going to have that magic moment. We shot every audition over the whole process and even had up to 8 or 10 cameras on any given day because we wanted to have a movie in which, not only followed the audition process with the points of views of the actors and dancers, but also the key management people like Bob Avian the director, even though most of the shooting was from the audition point of view!

Stan: A lot of the management people for the revival, were part of the original musical as performers… Adam: It was a tremendous factor for us to have that type of participation for our film both historically and cinematically. Many rare and poignant moments were captured which really helped to strengthen our movie, a factor in which I feel we were lucky! Stan: Luck was only a small participant; the rest is the commitment, dedication, and expertise of the filmmakers. Many congratulations to you and James on an exceptionally moving film. I can honestly say that Every Little Step won’t leave a dry eye in the theatre. Much continued success!

performances in 22 countries during the 1970’s through the 90’s, came to life during late-night recorded conversations by the show creators and the legendary Michael Bennett. Filmmakers James D. Stern and Adam Del Deo present a moving documentary that uses the original audio recordings as a backdrop and a historical perspective, at its inception. We’re introduced to the modern day producers and directors as they prepare for the revival of A Chorus Line, many of whom, were dancers in the original production during the 70’s and 80’s run of the musical! We learn of the process of production from their perspective of the music choices, casting/ auditioning sessions for actors, and the choreography sequences being considered. If you’re an actor/dancer with dreams and hopes of getting that coveted role, or are a relative of, perhaps know an aspiring dancer/actor, or simply curious of the process that one would go through, for the first time in the history of Broadway, the filmmakers were allowed to film the extensive audition process. The actors auditioning, in some cases enduring months of callbacks, share their inner most feelings, highs and lows, anxieties, but most of all their hopes to be chosen. This musical will be the venue to launch or further their careers. These actor portraits are so personal, by the end of the auditioning process, you know each and every one of them. change the future. The next two Terminator films (1991, 2003) gave us the young boy John Conner as he learns his destiny and the role that he will have in the battle with Skynet, the catalyst for the cyborg-machines intent on the annihilation of mankind. The TV series The Chronicles of Sara Connor (John Connor’s mother), established by Linda Hamilton’s character, moved us along, as John Connor becomes a young man accepting his destiny of leading the resistance to defeat Skynet and the “terminator” machines. Now, its post-apocalyptic 2018 after Skynet have destroyed much of humanity in a nuclear holocaust. John Connor (Christian Bale of Batman fame) finds the future he was raised to believe in, is altered by the appearance of a mysterious stranger (Sam Worthington) who joins him on an odyssey with a group of survivors. The journey takes them into the heart of Skynet’s operations and the terrible secret behind the possible annihilation of mankind, as they fight to keep the machines from finishing the job. Starring Christian Bale, Sam Worthington, Moon Bloodgood, Helena Bonham Carter, Anton Yelchin, Kyle Reese, Bryce Dallas Howard, Jane Alexander, and Michael Ironside.

Sparkling wines are some of the most food friendly and overlooked wines in America. In my mind the two biggest reasons we as Americans don’t drink “sparkling” wines are as follows:

SPORTSMAN’S

I hope the first reason should require no explanation to those of us afflicted with such a memory. The second reason may have many scratching their heads, so allow me to elaborate. Wedding cake is quite possibly the sweetest confection on earth. Sweet foods make dry wines stronger, you might even say aggressive. The bubbles in sparkling wine have a similar effect making the acidity and dryness of the wines more pronounced. Traditional wedding reception protocol goes something like this: Guests receive a glass of bubbly, a toast to the bride and groom, ‘Cheers!’. Next we encounter the problem. You are handed a piece of wedding cake, dutifully take a bite, revisit your bubbly and out comes the old “bitter beer face”! Suddenly you don’t like sparkling wine. It is time to put these experiences behind you and jump back in the pool. The world has too many lovely sparkling wines for you to enjoy. Many of them are easy on your wallet, as well as on you the next day. Spanish Cava for example can be very soft and easy to drink. Cava has a very distinct slightly earthy nose. In Italy they have Prosecco which is both the name of the wine and the grape. Prosseco was built for us here in the desert. Wickedly refreshing, it’s lightly fruity with styles ranging from off dry to dry. In

the “New World” wine regions you find Champagne inspired bubbles. In South Africa, Australia and the U.S.A. sparkling wines tend to be based on the traditional Champagne grapes Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. These wines come in a range of styles from sweet to bone dry and show more fruit characters than their French counterpart.

DJ Profile

DJ TRICKY T Where and when do you spin? Every Wednesday @ Pinky Ring (Bar Smith), Fridays @ Hidden House, Sundays @ Geisha a Go-Go.

How did you get started in the industry? I started DJing @ the age of 18 in Pennsylvania. I was listening to Power 99 out of Philadelphia and was instantly hooked on becoming a DJ. What’s the funniest thing that ever happened while performing? While on tour with DJ Z-Trip in Baltimore, Z thought it would be funny to mess with me during my set. At one point I turned around and I was completely surrounded by trash cans, road cones, toilet paper, anything he could get his hands on. I, of course, responded with the same during his set. Tell us a secret about yourself or your show: I like to think of my DJ sets as being well rounded. Clean mixing, scratching, many styles of music. You never know what I’m going to do next. What’s the biggest misconception people have about DJs? That we really will play your requests. Oh and that we are all promiscuous (Oh, wait that IS true). Haha. What will people hear when they listen to your music? All different types of music. From hip hop to electro to soul to funk to reggae, and I guarantee you that I will play something that you do not know but want to. If there were a “Golden Rule” for being a DJ, what would it be? Have your own style and don’t be scared to play out of the billboard charts. Too many DJs are doing almost exactly the same as everybody else, be original! Your favorite place to play? Austin was amazing! Also, I really love to play @ Pinky Ring. We have an awesome collection of DJs and it’s a blast to be around them and hear what they come up with every week. If you could change one thing about the DJ-club scene, what would it be? I miss the good ol’ days of people showing up to really get down and party, dance their asses off. It seems like a lot of people just wanna go out and be seen now. What would you be doing if you weren’t DJing? Skating probably, I pretty much put down my skateboard to pick up turntables. Now I pretty much just watch skateboarding, haha. I still love it though. E-mail Address: djtrickytaz@gmail.com Web Site: thepinkyring.com

Phoenix- The rooftop mayhem of Adult Swim at Hotel San Carlos last year during the summer months was an unquestionable smash hit amongst the savviest cats of the downtown Phoenix hipster scene. DJ performances throughout the evening and into the night hours saw gathered crowds jumping and splashing in the area pool with as much abandon as those twisting and thrashing on the dance floor. Adult Swim is cocktails, tall tales, beats and bare feet in the improbable setting defined by the ceiling of the Phoenix skyline. Alas, crowds last year became too big for the willing but logistically limited San Carlos. Therefore the

party people who throw the showWilliam Reed of Shake, Jared Alan of fauxShow, and the illustrious Jen Deveroux- sought another viable sanctuary for their scintillating summer scene, and they found it: The Wyndham Hotel at 50 E. Adams St., featuring a rooftop pool of its own, and much more square footage for the flocks of overheated hipsters looking for a weekend respite from the torrid temps.

Many predict the NBA final will be a memorable battle, one for the ages, between the Los Angeles Lakers and the Cleveland Cavaliers. Others agree, but are quick and eager to title it something much different. Something much more special. Kobe vs. LeBron. LeBron vs. Kobe. One owns three championship rings, is the reigning NBA MVP, and has often been referred to as “The Best Player On the Planet.” The other is nicknamed “King” and “The Chosen One.” Kobe Bryant has more than often been referred to as the next coming of “Jordan.” He’s an extremely versatile and competitive guard who has risen to levels of greatness time and time again for his Los Angeles Lakers. As the world knows, Michael Jordan did indeed set the bar high, and Kobe has certainly evolved into a “complete” player with an arsenal of similar skills. A passionate athlete, fiery leader and incredible scoring threat, his turnaround fade-away, running leaner, aggressive dunking abilities and near flawless defensive guarding skills are unquestioned, and speak volumes. He has evolved into everything his team, the fans and the league had hoped for, fearlessly carrying his squad to victory time and time again.

“King” James is certainly a widelyadmired, physically-blessed, prototype athlete. A born leader and human highlight reel who wants nothing more than to earn his team a title. Athletic abilities alone, LeBron is considered by many to be the next step in the evolution of the game itself. Many say the Cleveland basketball star would have easily been a top NFL draft pick, had he simply decided professional football was something of interest. With his strong, powerful frame, elusive style, quick step, endless range and near automatic jumper, it seems there’s no task too great for this driven, modern day competitor. He can guard, pass, shoot, drive, handle the ball and smile at the crowd. All with the greatest of ease, in what seems to be a fun and effortless task. Kobe worked hard, relentlessly, season after season, to improve and achieve. Through a tremendous work ethic and an overwhelming dedication to improve, he indeed became the best player he can be. LeBron however made the jump from High School directly to the Pros, immediately proving his place in the league and taking total control with his athletically-gifted abilities and larger than life persona. All with a big smile, it took little time for LeBron to live up to the hype. So, the potential matchup represents precision and resolve versus efficiency built by determination. Kobe wills himself to win night after night, while LeBron’s self-determination is a highly effective, undeniable force to be reckoned with.

Enter LeBron James.

Should they meet in the final, what a gift it will be to see these two gifted competitors go head to head.

He’s a man on a mission and hungry for his throne. A true entertainer, LeBron

LeBron will have a say as to exactly where and when “amazing” will happen, and precisely how it will all go down in the history books.

As the Power Rankings suggest, the Cavs and Lakers have the best odds of holding the Trophy when all is said and done. Therefore, one thing’s for certain. If this duel goes down, despite the outcome, the fans win either way.

First you must decide whether you prefer a nickel or dime radius.

Stanley Cup is almost here. See all the conference finals at Upper Deck.

A nickel radius creates more surface area contact with the cue ball and a dime radius makes the contact area smaller but can increase cue ball control problems. Most players prefer nickel, but this depends on your game. You generally see more advanced players and those that use smaller millimeter shafts using the dime radius. To determine if your tip is out of shape, hold a nickel or dime up to your tip. Place the top of the coin at the top of the tip. Look to the right and left of the radius and if you see a small amount of leather showing, your tip is out of shape. You will also see a small flat spot on top of the

G CUE

leather which is caused by pounding the tip into the cue ball repeatedly. A perfectly shaped tip will be the exact radius of the coin. The flat spot will cause miscues, so be sure to check it periodically. There are right and wrong ways to shape your tip. Ask your local professional for advice on different techniques

GOLF! SECTION

Slice Your Golf Score Instead Of Your Shot For most golf enthusiasts, an unwelcomed slice shot is one of the most necessary areas for advice and improvement. A sliced shot, severely curving from left to right, is indeed discouraging and can wreak havoc on your scorecard. Ultimately, the problem is an out-to-in swing path with an open clubface. The degree to which the ball is sliced is dictated by two factors: The most common cause of an out-

to right, you’re going to find yourself in even deeper trouble. When you start with problems addressing the ball, your chances of making the correct swing are immediately made much more difficult.

to-in swing path is an open address position. If you try to eliminate your slice by aiming your body well to the left of the target then you’re asking for trouble. Because it’s the perfect set-up position to hit the ball from left

In order to achieve a straight, successful golf shot, you should always set up correctly with your shoulders, hips and feet square to the target line. Once the club gets outside the ball-to-target line in the downswing you’re more than likely

heading for trouble, or an unplanned hike in the woods, from another wicked slice. Keep in mind, the more you open your stance, the more you will cut across the ball causing your slice to increase. To cure a slice, aim right, turn your grip to the right and feel like you are releasing the hands over through the impact area. Also, try this simple mental tip for a quick golf slice fix. When you address the ball, imagine there is another ball resting three to four inches ahead of the real ball. As you start the golf club down, aim to strike the actual ball but also try to keep the club travelling along the path to the imaginary one. This mental picture will help you to keep your downswing on an in-to-out path, preventing the dreaded and unwelcomed slice. Try implementing these two techniques into your game. Before you know it, a beautiful draw and well-controlled fade is well within your grasp – and your scorecard will thank you for the quick and easy fix.

Turn Plenty of Heads with 8 Hot Fashion Trends for Summer 2009 Your wardrobe is screaming for a fun and fashionable update this Spring and Summer! This season brings a handful of new and exciting trends, offering the very best selections for the most demanding of shopper. Here are 7 of the Hottest Fashion Trends for Spring-Summer and tips on how to utilize each new style to become the most admired fashionable girl in town. Big Earrings, Bangles and Necklaces Bright jewelry is an excellent way to dress up almost any outfit. And bold jewelry is as hot as ever for this Spring and Summer. There is never “TOO MUCH” when it comes to wearing bold pieces of jewelry. Wear two pieces (either earrings and bangles or bangles and rings or rings and a necklace at a time) and you will look gorgeous indeed.

If you’re going out after work, refresh the look with a fabulous black hair accessory featuring lace or feathers, and black lace gloves. You’ll surely break some hearts come nightfall.

Bold and Beautiful Bold, bright colors add personality and punch to any ensemble. Yellows, oranges and blues work best in terms of bold color palettes for this spring/summer.

The Nude Hues

Oversized Large Oversized bags are always a hit and extremely popular, allowing you to carry about as much as you like, wherever you may be heading.

Nude Hues are at the other end of the spectrum. The catwalk has repeatedly been left begging for more, and as a result, you can now find an extensive selection of nude colors on the rails. Simply find the perfect hue for your skin tone - perhaps be a bit more pinkish, or grayish. Just be sure to keep your eyes open and you’ll find the hue that’s just perfect for you. Self tanners will work wonders, as a slight tan is perfect when selecting nude colors. Colorful Hand Bags A new season means new trends on all fronts, including one of everybody’s personal favorites - handbags! Keep your eyes open this season for some of the usual suspects (oversized bags, clutches and pops of color), some rollover from the fall (fringe) and some new looks and trends we haven’t seen in quite some time. Some of these new exciting handbag trends include: Chain bags This classic look is turning heads and making a big comeback. You can find plenty selections of these cute and trendy looks at extremely low prices. Black and White Although a bit more basic, black and white together has never looked so good. These two-tone patterns are a fun and simple way to add plenty of flair to your look.

Bold Belts A simple bright bold belt is such an easy way to update your look. If wearing black, go for a thick colorful belt that adds character and style instantly. Who said a belt should be made of leather or fabric? Try a more daring version of a belt with a soft dress. The contrast between the two will play up your entire outfit.

Be brave and mix your boyfriend’s blazers with your shorts, tops and beautiful bright jewelry. Or even make it your own by mixing and matching skinny jeans, capris, or short shorts with big blazers for a dynamic feminine look. Sassy Mini Dresses If the short shorts approach is a bit too much for your taste, you can still flaunt your fabulous legs in many different sassy mini dresses which have been a crowd-favorite hit this season. The next time you’re tempted to reach for a snack, quick fix, or whatever is in plain sight - try asking yourself, “Could I actually just be thirsty?” Many of us often mistake hunger for thirst, thinking we want food when our bodies are crying out for a glass (or two) of water. The result? We overeat, taking in unnecessary calories, while leaving our bodies still thirsting for oh so important H2O. Proper hydration plays a major role in staying fit and healthy, as well as looking and feeling our very best. The connection between water and health is a strong one, not to be overlooked.

LIFE! SECTION

Hungry, Or Simply Thirsty?

Avoiding dehydration will automatically aid in preventing overeating. It’s a strong advantage in the never-ending Battle of the Bulge. When we drink enough water each and every day, our appetite takes note, and immediately decreases. Why? Because you have actually fulfilled your body with what it craves and truly needs. So when those hard to avoid hunger cravings kick in, try drinking a glass of water or two, before every meal as well. You’ll be surprised with the size of the portions you desire, as you had more than likely mistaken hunger for thirst. In return, proper hydration makes everything, even your brain, work a whole lot better. Energy levels increase, as well as a multitude of health benefits you’ll enjoy by simply drinking plenty of water.

Your Body is Your Temple - Even When On The Run People are constantly seeking fast, easy, goodtasting foods despite their non-stop, busy lifestyle. Always keep in mind, whether convenient fast food, the local cafeteria or finer restaurant dining, there are plenty of wise choices wherever you may go. Here are just a few helpful tips on how to stay healthy and fit, keeping energy levels high, all while leaving your taste buds more than satisfied. 1. Split your meal with a friend or co-worker. An extra large meal in half a portion will work wonders for your weight and your wallet. 2. Add plenty of nutrition to all types of sandwiches with the addition of lettuce, tomato, peppers and a multitude of other tasty vegetables. 3. Look at the menu carefully, specifically for fat and calorie content. Baked, broiled, grilled, roasted or steamed are good key words to look for.

4. Feel free to order a child-sized portion. In many cases, larger menu items are simply much more food than your body needs. 5. There’s nothing wrong with making a special request. Ask for a baked potato or side salad instead of those feisty French fries. Also, request your sandwich or burger come without fatty bacon or mayonnaise.

fats) every two to three hours is the very best way to cure hunger cravings. Smaller meals and/or light snacks throughout the day allow you to burn fat by boosting your metabolism. Energy levels will remain high allowing you to feel your very best throughout your busy day.

6. Move the pre-meal bread and chips out of sight. Loaded with carbs, you’re likely to eat too much before your meal even arrives. We’ve all been there, lets work on this one together. 7. Plan your meals ahead of time for the entire day. Keep breakfast light if you’re planning a special dinner or meal later that evening. 8. Keep the alcohol to a minimum. Alcohol will indeed increase your appetite, providing empty calories with zero nutrition. 9. If dessert is a must, make sure everyone at the table has a fork. In other words, be sure to share with the rest of the class. 10. Think ahead as to exactly when and where your meals will take place. Remember, smaller fistsized portions (including protein, carbs and healthy AZWeeklyMagazine.com

Some think the Scion XB is a strange looking car, but it has sold well and is worth a look if you need an economical quality ride. Under the hood is a 2.4 liter Toyota engine putting out 158 horsepower. The 5-speed manual gearbox provides best efficiency, but I have found the shifter/clutch system awkward to use, so I ordered the 4-speed automatic. Gas mileage is rated at 22-28 mpg. I got 26 in mixed Phoenix driving and 31 at 65 mph cruising. This is not a sports car, as the suspension is too soft. The steering had

a better feel than last years model and the brakes were nice and firm. A good city commuter. The interior is nothing fancy, but quality is high and there is a lot of room inside for real people and gear. For first-time drivers, operating the XB takes some getting use to. If you drive a UPS truck or army battle tank, you will feel right at home. But my first day of driving, I felt like a hamster sitting in a shoe box. After a few days, you adapt. I can certainly adapt to the price tag. This car comes well equipped at $16,700. And with Toyota quality, it should be running for a long time.

Great White to Perform at Club Red Tempe- Great White will be performing with Keel at Club Red (2155 E. University Dr. in Tempe) on Friday May 22nd. After nearly 3 decades, Great White is showing no signs of slowing down. The original core members reunited in January 2007 and released Back to the

Jack Russell (lead vocals), Mark Kendall (lead guitar), Scott Snyder (bass), Audie Desbrow (drums) and Michael Lardie (guitar/keys) have realized over the past few years that they are now a “multigenerational” band, seeing children wear tour shirts from the 80’s and knowing that time hasn’t changed things too much for them. “We are right back in the middle of it like we were 20 years ago,” explains Michael Lardie. “One of the great things about doing records now is that we are like the old married people, we finish each other’s sentences, so we get to spend a little more time in the compositional

This will be Great White’s first appearance at Club Red. “The best thing, as it has always been, is to play shows for people” Michael says. “We always look forward to playing shows in Arizona and for me being an Arizona resident, it’s always fun playing your home town.” Looking forward, Michael is fairly certain that there will be another studio album and the band is also planning to record a live DVD in the near future; the first that will be officially authorized by the band. Tinted Windows CD Review

By Stephen Wilkinson The term ‘supergroup’ tends to over-hype and often lead to over-bloated anticipation, often putting unnecessary expectations on a collaborative effort by branding someone not worthy of such a title. So when Taylor Hansen (of Hansen, yes... that’s right), James Iha (ex-Smashing Pumpkins), Adam Schlesinger (Fountains Of Wayne) and Bun E. Carlos (Cheap Trick) come together, naturally there are certain expectations. The result? A surprisingly solid first effort that fans of their respective followings will probably all enjoy, perhaps even finding fans of their own who are not aware of their backgrounds. While not sounding like any one of their own bands yet showing distinctive elements from each, this is straight up nononsense pop oriented retro rock. “Kind Of A Girl” is simply a catchy, bouncy tune that rocks while “Messing

Phoenix- John Stowers will be pulling double duty as he performs at two locations in the same day. On Friday May 22nd he will be performing at the Sail Inn (26 S. Farmer St. in Tempe) from 4:30-7:30pm, and at the Kozy Cactus (4326 E Cactus Road Suite 3) in Phoenix from 8-10:30pm. If you have never fallen in love at first sight next weekend is an opportunity not to be missed. Like the warm flutter of butterflies fused with the thunderbolt of first love, John Stowers blends roostsy rock with amazing soul, surprising audiences with a sound they won’t forget. Stowers integrates his rich musical experiences with influences of The Beatles and Blues to write and perform original music with an alternative/rock/pop flavor. His award winning music includes recognition from 2004 Billboard World Song Contest where he took honors in the blues category for “Jimmy’s Song” inspired from a weekend binge of

Phoenix- Master bluesman Guitar Shorty will be performing at the Rhythm Room (1019 E. Indian School Rd. in Phoenix) on Friday May 22nd at 8pm in support of his latest release We the People, which received the 2007 Blues Music Award for “Contemporary Blues Album Of The Year.” Credited with influencing both Jimi Hendrix and Buddy Guy, Shorty has been electrifying audiences for five decades with his supercharged live shows and his incendiary recordings. With his latest effort, Guitar Shorty delivers a moving and soulful statement, featuring some of the most fire-coated fretwork he has ever laid down and the most thought-provoking songs he’s ever recorded. He’s playing with a passion and dedication almost unmatched in today’s music scene. Admission is $12. For more information visit www.rhythmroom.com or www. guitarshorty.org.

With My Head” has more of a Cars meets Smashing Pumpkins feel. “Can’t Get A Read On You”, “Cha Cha” are good, solid tracks as well as the remainder of the album keeping one’s interest. Carlos may be Cheap Trick’s drummer, but Trick’s feel seems to weave throughout, surely as their influence has been in effect for decades on countless bands. Make no mistake; some people will cringe at the thought of the singer from Hansen fronting this. Honestly he does okay, but one could picture someone else in the lead vocalist slot. As the tunes are all pretty good, this more or less overshadows not being completely sold on Hansen’s vocals. It is a thoroughly solid effort worthy of repeated listening. You might even find yourself liking it. Rockzone Records www.rockzonerecords.com www.myspace.com/rockzonerecords
