When Mary’s husband of 26 years

passed away in 1989, she was convinced that she was going to be alone for the rest of her life. But after living as a widow for 21 years, a casual acquaintance of hers finally asked “Mary, what are you going to do with the rest of your life?” When Mary replied, “I don’t know.” Her friend suggested Great Expectations Scottsdale, since that is where she met her husband. This may have been the best piece of advice for Mary. After joining Great Expectations Scottsdale, Mary met fellow member Gene in 2010. They took their relationship slow at first, but eventually fell deeply in love and were married April 28th, 2012. Of course, Gene and Mary were not alone while in the single world. In Scottsdale alone there are thousands of single men and women looking for their match. However, between balancing a busy schedule and avoiding all the wrong people at the bar scene it’s becoming increasingly difficult to meet new people. That’s where Great Expectations Scottsdale comes in! Over the last 35 years Great Expectations has perfected a suite of matchmaking services that emphasizes dating with a purpose. Unlike other dating services that entrust applicants to input their

own data, Great Expectations professionals meet every potential client in person to interview and screen each applicant. Recently, Great Expectations Scottsdale announced Tammy Smith, who has been with the company since 1998, as their new Center Director. Tammy has had the pleasure of meeting and matching multiple couples through the years. “At Great Expectations we personally meet and interview each member so they are pre-screened before they can join. We also run background checks on each member. When you join an online dating site, you don’t know who you’re connecting with,” says Tammy. “We find it’s best for our clients to not be surprised by who they’re meeting. We take our own photos and we provide videotaped conversations as well. We will be as involved in your experience as much as you want us to be, acting as a personal dating liaison and coaching you along the way.” In addition to pre-screening each potential client, Great Expectations provides ample opportunities for members to meet like-minded singles in whichever environment they’re most comfortable. “We hold a variety of fun, safe, singles events to help get you out into the Great Expectations community,” says Ashley AZWeeklyMagazine.com

REVIEWERS ROUNDTABLE The following are reactions from each of AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s film commentators in an effort to generate a well-rounded overview of this weekend’s new releases.

About the Film

of cut-a-ways or reverse angle shots. The dialogue, written by Richard Linklater and costar Julie Delpy, is sharp, crisp, and poignant at times without the ‘preparedness’ edge that sometimes leaks forward in filmmaking. In short, a powerful film on relationships and particularly Jesse and Celine’s next chapter in their lives.

‘Before Midnight’ Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy reprise their roles of Jesse and Celine who, 9 years after we last saw them, embody the realities of a long-term relationship - the weight of children, work, ambitions and disappointments. (R - 108 minutes) Stan: This installment in the ongoing story of Jesse (Ethan Hawke) and Celine (Julie Delpy) features long running takes with the two actors delivering their character nuances going from doubt, accusation, and self empathy to understanding, acceptance and admitting there is love at the base of their long term relationship, without the benefit of ‘cuts and roles’ to heighten the cinematic impact all within one long take. In theatrical presentations, these are viewed from one stationary perspective based on your seat in the audience. Director Richard Linklater uses the camera in the same stationary perspective with 2 shots of the central characters subtly moving from one to the other with the visual interruption

Joseph: Like its predecessors “Before Sunrise” and “Before Sunset,” “Before Midnight” is deep, meaningful and realistically romantic. However, that last quality receives somewhat of a melancholy modification this time around. Whereas the first two films were hopeful, this one hits viewers - especially those who feel connected to these two characters with whom they have grown up for the past 18 years - in the gut like a ton of bricks. The insights and revelations about time’s impact on true love are devastating. But because they are reflections of reality rather than some fairy tale, they culminate in this franchise’s most emboldened ending yet.

‘An Oversimplification of Her Beauty’ Terence Nance plays a quixotic artist who hypothesizes about why he feels bad when a mystery girl stands him up. The event prompts him to ask: What is the content of a momentary feeling? Is it the sum of your experiences? And, more importantly, are your experiences the sum of you? (NR - 85 minutes) Stan: Writer/director Terence Nance mixes the various production styles of live action, animation, and documentary ‘Q’ & ‘A’ along with himself as the central character, while the voice-over/narrative provides the overall connecting link between the explored aspects of human relationships. From both a linear and aerial perspective, encompassing the male and the female viewpoints, at times some segments are quite eclectic,

SOUNDBITE SPOTLIGHT

Joseph: If writer/director Terence Nance considers his new experimental motion picture “An Oversimplification of Her Beauty” to indeed be an oversimplification, then I would not want to encounter anything that he considers to be an over complication. Nance’s new movie, which is actually an agitated amalgamation of two shorts, is an amazing achievement in stylized philosophizing. However, its constant repetition, linear in cohesiveness and instructionalesque narration do not make for a very satisfying slice of entertainment. The opening hooks you with a series of compelling questions but it quickly becomes more exasperating than it is enlightening on a universal level.

while others are insightfully thought provoking. As ‘An Oversimplification of Her Beauty’ moves from style to style, the live action sequences serve to ground the film in reality while the animation elements point to the fantasies surrounding relationships. A word of caution: Hold on to your mind to maintain its equilibrium.

By Joseph J. Airdo “I am asking the audience if they have been there before. And I am asking them to go back to that place if they have. Each person’s experience is specific and has its own idiosyncrasies. I guess that I am interested in the openended experience of the film.

thinking about her and thinking about our situation in a way that you hold onto something that you love. “But I do not think that, in the traditional context of therapy, I came to any closure, got over or released the energy regarding

that relationship while making the film. The experiences in the film that we do are what actually made me do that. But in the making of the film, all of that was kind of over and I was just left with the aesthetic concerns and creative decisions that I had to make.” – Terence Nance

“I call it one-sided nonfiction in that it is very directly a story that I am telling about an experience that I had with and about the person I had the experience with. But, of course, the nature of any relationship is that there are two sides to it. My film is limited to just my side of it so it cannot be called fact for that reason. It is not deliberated upon by all parties involved. “I think that there was some sort of function for the film in my emotional life. I think that function was to keep me

The photographs featured in the exhibit and book are original Polaroid images, a now defunct media that seems, even with the work of “The Impossible Project”, to still be basically unavailable for use or purchase. Steve Weiss is a Phoenix native of the worst kind, the kind that prattles on endlessly about the good old days when there was nothing North of Camelback Road and folks rode horseback through the neighborhood on the way to the desert. Exposed to photography in high school, he only complicated matters by attending the San Francisco Art Institute and Arizona State University, getting a B.F.A. in 1978 that taught him the difference between the “winkin’” eye” and the “shootin’ eye”.

Once touted as the natural successor to Joni Mitchell, singer-songwriter Rickie Lee Jones proved no less idiosyncratic or mercurial. Like Mitchell, Jones experienced significant commercial success at the outset of her career, but a restless creative spirit—combined with a stubborn refusal to fit comfortably into any one musical niche—sealed her ultimate destiny as that of a highly regarded cult heroine. Jones was born on November 8, 1954, in Chicago, but the volatile relationship between her mother and father resulted in an upbringing that led her everywhere from Phoenix, Arizona, to Olympia, Washington, where an expulsion ended her school career. As a teen, Jones began drinking heavily and, eventually, she left home and began drifting up and down the West Coast before settling in Los Angeles in the mid-1970s. There, she worked a series of waitressing jobs while occasionally performing in area clubs, where she sang and honed her unique Beat-influenced, spoken-word monologues. She also began a relationship with fellow musician Tom Waits.

Her eponymous album, Rickie Lee Jones, was released in March 1979 and became a hit, buoyed by the success of the jazz-flavored single “Chuck E.’s in Love” (#4 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1979) and its accompanying video. After moving to New York City, Jones spent most of 1981 working on a follow-up album, written and recorded partly in reaction to her breakup with Tom Waits sometime between late 1979 and early 1980. On September 18, 2012, Jones released The Devil You Know on Concorde Records. The album includes a collection of covers produced by famed musician Ben Harper. Showtime for both evenings: 7:30pm. Northern Arizona’s New Premier Casino and Resort Arizona has a new, gorgeous casino/resort with the grand opening of Twin Arrows, as well as a wonderful new reason to head up north for entertainment or business travel. Twin Arrows Navajo Casino Resort is located along I-40, exit 219, just east of Flagstaff and offers state-ofthe-art gaming, luxurious resort accommodations, fine dining and culturally infused architecture. Phase one of the $230 million facility includes 1,089 slot machines, 18 table games and 12 poker tables, live Keno, a fivestory, upscale hotel with 90 rooms and suites, 16,000 square foot banquet and conference center, fully equipped fitness center, heated indoor pool and six distinct dining concepts. The casino will operate 24 hours per day, seven days a week. The resort also offers 24-hour complimentary valet parking featuring a unique “Valet Express” mobile phone service system. The 267,000-square-foot facility showcases Navajo culture and

features commissioned Navajo artists’ original paintings and other artworks. The structure was designed by the Friedmutter Group of Las Vegas working with Navajo tribal members – and built by Hunt Construction Group. “Twin Arrows will create a new benchmark in gaming entertainment while improving the economic health and prosperity of the Navajo Nation,” said Derrick Watchman, chief executive officer of the Navajo Nation Gaming Enterprise. “As northern Arizona’s premier destination casino resort, Twin Arrows will create approximately 800 full-time jobs with an annual payroll of $34 million, including salaries and benefits.” One look inside the casino, the resort and the rooms and you can tell a great deal of thought went into building this flagship facility for the Navajo nation. Every part of the facility is gorgeous and in keeping with the definition of a fine resort. Vibrant colors, patterns and architecture symbolically represent the elements such as sky, water, earth, fire, and air, which are precious to the Navajo culture.

Luxurious Accommodations The rooms and suites at Twin Arrows feature a contemporary décor, featuring superior-quality linens, luxury beds, oversized 100% Egyptian cotton towels, in-room safe, double vanities, mini-refrigerators and the IBAHN

something for everyone, from $20 a bottle to $300. All of our wines are hand selected by our sommelier and many of them are limited edition that you won’t find anywhere else.”

Located on East University Drive, between South Rural Road and South McClintock Drive, the new 3,400-square-foot restaurant offers American-Mediterranean cuisine with a sophisticated twist. Popular dishes include hummus nachos, pistachio-crusted salmon, a signature Salut burger, and Ciprian salsa bruschetta.

Taso, a graduate of ASU, said the Tempe location offers an alternative to the college bar scene for the 20-to-30s crowd. “I feel like most people look at Tempe and really only look at the University. Salut is going to be a great place to go for a business lunch meeting or to wind down after a long day with our happy hour.”

“There is nothing like what we have created with Salut around, and that’s hard to say,” says Owner Anastasios Tirkas, also known as Taso. “I have taken my experiences from traveling all over Europe and brought a touch of that to Tempe.”

Saltut features a rustic and vintage style, decorated with recycled pieces, a wine room on display, a custom glass garage door that gives access to the large dining patio and a 20-seat bar.

Kai Restaurant at the Sheraton Wild Horse Pass Resort & Spa will host a wine dinner series in partnership with several acclaimed vineyards on the second Tuesday of June and July of 2013.

The wine list is one to brag about with 30 wines by the glass and another 150 available by the bottle. Taso says, “There will be

PATRON SAINTS OF BEER How did important religious personages become the patron saints of various things related to beer? Both universal and local Saints have reportedly performed miracles, either during their lives or afterwards, that involved the working class people and beer. Other saints were designated because they represent beer producing and consuming regions. Centuries ago beer was the daily drink of the people, both because plain water was often polluted and due to beer’s inexpensive, nourishing qualities. Monks brewed beer for themselves as a safe source of hearty sustenance. Monk’s meals were frugal at best, particularly during fast periods. However, consumption of liquids did not break the fast. Without widespread hotel chains, monasteries served as inn’s for travelers who shared the monk’s provisions, especially their robust, sustaining beers. Eventually, the monks were able to also sell their beers at pubs called klosterschenken, and a flourishing trade developed. To build brand loyalty, the names of the monastery’s patron saint was used. To this day many beers bear the name of a saint. The procedure which the church uses to name a saint, called canonization, has only operated since the tenth century. Prior to that, since the first century, saints were chosen by public acclaim. While this may have been fairer to the general public, it included information that was both legend or fictitious, and eventually the Vatican assumed the authority for approving saints. Among the patron saints of brewers, four are extremely well known: Augustine of Hippo, Luke the Apostle, Nicholas of Myra (also known as

Saint Nicholas, or Santa Claus) and the Good King Wenceslas, the latter two also providing a linkage to the winter season of merriment. Augustine of Hippo, now part of Tunisia, who was born in 345 AD, was known for wild living and significant alcoholic beverage consumption prior to his conversion. His complete turnaround and life of moderation contributed to his becoming a patron saint of brewers.

Nicholas of Myra, Turkey is believed to have lived in first half of 4th century, and died between 342 and 350 AD. St. Nicholas is associated with the legend of the Three Clerics, a drama about 3 church scholars who stopped for lodging at an inn, where the innkeeper slew them for their money. A disguised Nicholas invoked God’s help to resurrect them and, by doing so, became a protector over travelers and brewers. May 29th, 2013 -June 4th, 2013

Saint Luke who lived during the first century is widely regarded as a patron saint of brewers although there is no obvious reason. Possible connections include his being a physician and knowing that the beer of the time was healthier than the water of the time, and his ability to mix various herbs together for medicines just as they were mixed for beer. Saint Wenceslas, born in the early 900s AD, promoted the spread of Christianity in Czechoslovakia. Wenceslas became famous through a Christmas carol by J.M. Neale, “Good King Wenceslas”, which has little to do with history but more with Victorian ideals. Because Bohemian hops were so valued, Wenceslas ordered the death penalty for anyone caught exporting the cuttings and obviously endeared himself to the local hop growers and brewers. Bohemia and Czechoslovakia and his crown became the symbol of nationalism for the Czechs. By extension he became a patron saint of Czech brewers. There also was King Wenceslas II in the 13th century, who convinced the Pope to revoke an order banning the brewing of beer, again endearing the Wenceslas name to local brewers. King Gambrinus is revered by many brewers as a patron saint. According to folk tales, Gambrinus was King of Flanders. Reputed to have invented hopped, malt beer, the legendary Gambrinus may have actually been Jan Primus, Duke of Flanders, Brabant,

Louvain, and Antwerp. Primus, according to the Encyclopedia of Beer, is credited with introducing the toast as a custom. Some others attribute Gambrinus to Jean Sans Peur, known as Ganbrivius. Although there is no evidence of him among the church listings of saints, Gambrinus, called the “King of Beer”, continues to be celebrated by brewers as a patron saint. Probably the best known Irish saint after Patrick is Saint Brigidwho lived in the late part of the fifth century AD. THE BLAME GAME: LAWSUITS IN CRAFT BEER By “King” James Swann Hello everyone, today let’s chat about trademarks and lawsuits in craft beer. In the last few years, many of our favorite small breweries have found themselves in legal squabbles over everything from naming rights to the design of a glass. A trademark is a legal registration for the protection of everything from a product or company’s name to the design of a logo, or even use of color in a given scheme. But are we taking the use of this protection too far? Have we become Sue Happy and no better than the sharks who willingly take on these cases? Well.... My favorite is Ballast Point’s Yellow Tail Pale Ale vs. Yellow Tail Winery. Let’s think this through shall we? Craft Beer – Cheap Wine Fish – Kangaroo USA – Australia Result? Ballast Point now refers to their beer as simply “Pale Ale”. Was there REALLY an issue there? The newest scandal is Magic Hat owners Cerveceria Costa Rica embattled with tiny brewery West Sixth Brewery and the use of symbols and the numbers 6 and 9. These guys are really letting each other have it, Reality TV Style! Others include Lost Abbey suing Moylan’s over tap handles or the memo Mrs. Gooch’s (Whole Foods) received from Bell’s for use of the name “Copper Bell” and most importantly Oskar Blues being forced to relinquish the name “Gordon” by none other than Gordon Biersch. Did it mean nothing to Gordon Biersch that Oskar Blues had named their beer after Gordon Knight, a great friend of the brewery, fallen firefighter and True American Hero? Guess not.

I understand the need to protect what belongs to you, the things that you have created and worked so hard for, but in all of these silly instances, CAN’T WE ALL JUST GET ALONG? Until next week….

A poem attributed to Brigid in the Brussel’s library begins with the lines “I should like a great lake of ale, for the King of the Kings. I should like the family of Heaven to be drinking it through time eternal.” Saint Amand primarily operated in the regions now considered northern France and Belgium. He established a score of

She worked in a leper colony which found itself without beer, “For when the lepers she nursed implored her for beer, and there was none to be had, she changed the water, which was used for the bath, into an excellent beer, by the sheer strength of her blessing and dealt it out to the thirsty in plenty.” Brigid is said to have changed her dirty bathwater into beer so that visiting clerics would have something to drink. Hildegard von Bingen was a benedictine nun, the Abbess of Diessenberg, and a well-known herbalist, mystic and musician. Although she has not yet been canonized, she has been beatified and is considered a saint by many people. Hildegard was a highly enlightened woman who overcame social, cultural, and gender barriers and became an advisor to bishops, popes, and kings. She used the curative powers of natural objects for healing, and wrote treatises about natural history and medicinal

as a filter to further clarify the brother’s beer. In remembrance of this contribution to the brewer’s art, the saint is often portrayed--as on the certificates of the Belgian Brewers Confederation--in the company of bees with one hand resting upon a bee skep.

Following the collapse of the roof of an abbey brewery in Flanders, Saint Arnold of Soissons asked God to multiply the stores of beer which were left for the monk’s consumption. When Arnold’s prayer was answered in abundance, the monks and townspeople were prepared to canonize him on the spot. While Arnold of Soissons is best known for his miraculous provision of beer, he is also credited with a most practical improvement upon the brewing process. While weaving bee skeps for the abbey’s apiary, the abbot realized that the straw cones could be used

Arnold of Soissons also is considered the patron saint of hop pickers because of the region in which he preached. Hops originated in Brabant region of Belgium. They became more widespread when a Belgian princess married a Kentish prince and the dowry included land across from a brewery. Belgians reportedly sent the first hops to England for use in making beer. “Don’t drink the water, drink beer” warned Saint Arnold of Metz, concerned about the dangers of drinking impure water. uses of plants, animals, trees and gemstones. Her writings include the earliest known reference to using hops in beer “(Hops), when put in beer, stops putrification and lends longer durability.” For many centuries, brewers have invoked the names of patron saints to bless and protect their beers. Since the early brewing process was not well understood, often times the batch of beer was not fit for drinking. The poor quality was mystically blamed on evil spirits and specifically on “brew witches” or “beer witches.” The last known burning of a beer witch was in the late 1500s. Now that we have vastly improved beer quality, when you quaff your next pint, consider the saintly company with which you are associating and who may be looking over you. May the Saints bless your pint.

According to legend he ended a plague when he submerged his crucifix into a brew kettle and persuaded people to drink only beer from that “blessed” kettle. He is reported to have said “From man’s sweat and God’s love, beer came into the world”.

GAME! SECTION 52

By GeorGe Dickie

Tiger Woods has nothing on Inbee Park when it comes to streaks of futility. In 2008, the South Korean burst onto the LPGA scene with a win at the U.S. Open. At the time, she was a carefree 19-year-old, feeling no pressure and playing that way. After finishing eighth on the Tour’s money list that year, the world appeared to be her oyster. Then came the pressure – and the slump. Always stellar with the putter, Park saw her game with the woods and irons go south, and she had trouble staying in the fairway. As a result, she went winless in 2009, 2010 and 2011, recording money list finishes of 50th, 11th and 31st. The doubters wondered if her U.S. Open title would be her only one. Then came a coaching change. She hired her fiance, former Korean PGA player Gi Hyeob Nam, to be her swing coach, and her game began to turn around. She recorded wins last year at the Evian Masters and LPGA Malaysia and finished first on the LPGA money list. She followed that up this year with her second major title, the Kraft Nabisco Championship, plus wins at the Honda LPGA Thailand and the North Texas LPGA Shootout. At this writing, she had a stretch of five wins in her last 18 tournaments and a continued stay atop the Tour’s money list.

JUNE 15 LONDON

As one of the most distinctive guitar players since the Telecaster was invented, Amos Garrett has made almost a dozen albums of his own and appeared on more than 150 artists’ recordings. He’s played rock and roll, folk, country, blues and pop, and you can hear him on records with Paul Butterfield, Ian Tyson, Bonnie Raitt, Jesse Winchester, Maria Muldaur, Emmylou Harris and even Anne Murray. On Tuesday, June 4th he will release his first jazz album, Jazzblues. “What we‘re doing is bringing the blues back to jazz — it used to a major part of jazz, but along the way the music got too complicated, some of the musicians got too self-involved, and the blues got lost,” he says. Garrett doesn’t see his jazz album as a major stretch, in large because the common root of the blues is as instantly recognizable as Garrett’s unique sound.

ALBUM REVIEWS DANNY ZELISKO PRESENTS

The Boxer Rebellion Delivers Unique Promises, Imaginary Cities’ Creates Dreamy Fall of Romance The Boxer Rebellion’s latest release is filled with soaring melodies, epic choruses, synths and dance rock, and despite feeling stale by the halfway point from a lack of variety, it surprisingly reinvents itself in the second half. The first single, “Diamonds,” is some of the catchiest dance-inducing synth rock you’ll hear this year, while the otherworldly guitars on “Fragile” will leave you breathless. “New York”’s primal, tribal percussive beat wake the band and listener from their slumber halfway through, and the hair on your neck will stand up on “Safe House” when singer Nathan Nicholson starts channeling Anberlin’s Stephen Christian. By the time the spellbinding closing title track is done, you will come away feeling surprised by what you have just listened to. Promises is a sweet experience.

Canadian duo Imaginary Cities has released a fun sophomore album. Fall of Romance is filled with ethereal soundscapes and unique flourishes (laser beams and spaceships, anyone?), and you can tell that singer Marti Sarbit and songwriter Rusty Matyas loved making this record. You can hear shades of Zooey Deschanel and M. Ward of She & Him on the otherworldly hidden track “Still Waiting So Cold,” “Chasing the Sunset” is a lush, summertime pop anthem, and the driving piano pop of “Bells of Cologne” is nothing short of epic. “Silver Lining” showcases the funkier side of the band while hinting at the band’s writing prowess as they zero in on standing strong despite trials. Fun, diverse, creative and energetic, Fall of Romance is a genuine pop rock gem.
