Individual Arts & Cultural Organizations Also Working for the Greater Good As supporters and donors focus their collective attention on helping nonprofit arts and cultural organizations build a financial base through MyArtsCommunity.org, a pilot fund-raising event going on through June 15, an interesting side story is surfacing. “The silos are dropping away,” said Bob Delgado of Hensley & Company, who came up with the idea for the fund-raiser with colleague and fellow Valley businessman Mike Cohn of CFG Business Solutions. “As each arts and cultural organization reaches out to its own base of stakeholders and sends them to the website, every other arts and cultural organization may benefit.” A number of donors have made contributions of varying amounts to more than one organization on the list of 16. “The idea is quite compelling. In addition to generating donations for their own organizations, their efforts work to help the collective group,” Cohn said. “One of the missions of this effort is to expand the donor base for all organizations and, hopefully, this component of it is helping achieve that goal.” The six-week pilot campaign is designed to resonate among donors of all ages to contribute as little as $10 through the web site, MyArtsCommunity.org to help the Valley’s 16 largest arts and cultural organizations weather the economic storm.

Now it’s your turn. No one has to remind you about the current economic crisis. But you may not be aware that the Valley’s arts and cultural organizations have been hit especially hard by budget cuts and are now in urgent need of our financial support. With a nominal donation of $10, $25, $50 or $100, you can participate in the Valley’s largest arts and cultural organizations at

The Brothers Bloom The “Flim-Flam” brothers at their finest! Review by Stan Robinson

WEEKEND BOX OFFICE BIGGIES Top Grossing Movies from May 22ndth through May 24th

For us ‘boomers’, the term “flimflam man” was our way of referring to the con artist. The 1967 classic movie The Film-Flam Man starring the late George C. Scott gave the con artist infamous notoriety. The Sting (1973) starring the late, great, Paul Newman and Robert Redford,

brought glamour to the elaborate hustle. Both movies gave us a very likable view of the people involved. In The Brothers Bloom, we become very attached to the two brothers. We meet the brothers when they are very young. They’re orphans and bounced from foster home to foster home. Before they reach their teens, they decide to runaway

and make it on their own. The older brother Stephen created the scenarios for their stings while the younger Bloom was the likable front person. As the two brothers grow into adults, the Brothers Bloom become the best con men in the world! Their expertise is sharpened and fine-tuned throughout the years, swindling millionaires with complex scenarios of lust, adventure, and intrigue. Now, as middle age men, Bloom (Adrien Brody) is feeling the sense of change and wanting more of life, while Stephen (Mark Rufallo), although content in their adventurous lifestyle, understands the feelings of the younger brother he’s loved and taken care of for so many years. They talk it through and decide to take on one last assignment. Their next “mark”, is a beautiful and eccentric heiress (Rachel Weisz). Their plan, to show the heiress the time of her life with a romantic adventure that takes them around the world, and take her for millions! Their grandiose plan starts to takes some unexpected twists and turns because they aren’t aware of the hidden desire for change in her own life and the resourcefulness of the heiress they have targeted! The Brothers Bloom is a film with it all. We’re given the love of the brothers for each other, the intrigue of their elaborate hustles, the danger of retaliations, and comedic sequences that come at perfect moments. My favorite recurring comic relief is Rachel Weisz’s character trying to learn to drive her canary-yellow Lamborghini. Every time she starts it up, you hear the gears grinding, she takes off, she drives out of frame, you hear a crash sound, the next scene, the car is being towed across frame. And she doesn’t crash it once, or twice, but frequently and in the most outrageous situations! Starring Rachel Weisz, Adrien Brody, Mark Ruffalo, Rinko Kikuchi, Robbie Coltrane, and Maximilian Schell. Written and directed Rian Johnson; Summit Entertainment release;

UP Blends the Perfect Balance of Emotions By Randy Montgomery

Walt Disney is quoted with saying, “For every laugh, there should be a tear,” and the new Disney/Pixar film UP sticks to that belief and throws in action and adventure to boot for good measure.

While Carl and Ellie were happy as can be as a married couple, life events always prevented Carl from taking Ellie on the exploration they had always envisioned going on. After decades together, Ellie passes on, leaving the now 78-year-old Carl to live alone. Developers force Carl off of his property and into a retirement home. That is when Carl decides to set off on that adventure and live out his

wacky characters that speaks to what is important in life, where Carl learns the true meaning of “adventure.” Calculating the balance between humor and emotion is not an exact science says UP Director/Writer Pete Docter, who joined Pixar in 1990 and has also directed Monsters, Inc and worked on such films as Wall-E, Toy Story, and A Bug’s Life, “In terms of the basic approach, we try to tell a compelling story, you want to fall in love with these characters, make them interesting, engaging and relatable. Whether they are monsters, fish or whatever… there is something you recognize about your own life that is happening on the screen.” But UP isn’t your traditional Pixar story. It crosses genre boundaries

Carl (voice of Ed Asner), is a balloon salesman at the local zoo. He has always dreamed of going off on an adventure since he was a young boy. He watched news reels before feature

films that chronicled the journey of his favorite explorer Charles Muntz, who set off to South American to find a fabled bird-like creature. As a child, he met his female counterpart, Ellie. She too dreamed of adventure. The two were perfect together. They ended up getting married and spent the rest of their lives by each other’s side.

and his wife led together, adventure, then you start to think out what is the theme. In this case it is redefining what adventure means. He (Carl) worries he failed his wife because they never had an adventure, they never got to go to south America, met fantastic creatures, saw scenic vistas and then he realizes he had the greatest adventure, which was their life together. Then you start to figure, the force of antagonism has to work with that. Carl just wants to be left alone. Russell, the bird, the dog, all of these elements that try to reach in and say connect with the world again. You want to build all that to support that main theme.”

Boy Scout) named Russell gets trapped on his porch as the house floats away. The two land in South America and meet a variety of creatures that once again prevent Carl from having that private outing he always wanted. What starts as a romantic love story between two people continues on as a truly funny action adventure filled with AZWeeklyMagazine.com

Designing the perfect balance of emotion first requires a basic premise of a story, which often starts with just basic elements. “Bob Peterson (the head writer and co director) and I were playing around with the idea of a grouchy old man and a floating house,” Docter explains. “Then we worked backwards and said, ‘How did he get there? What led him to float his house away? Where is he going and why?’” Docter went on to say, “We start to lock in on certain elements that we like, such as this wonderful life he

“They focus on … the believability of emotions. We sit and argue for hours and hours over the timing of a sigh or exhale, to make it feel right.” “For me, one of the things I was most proud of was when we went out and did an audience screening, it was the first time we put it (the film) in front of an audience. And all of those things we had been talking about; the theme, the characters, were in place. I wondered what people were going to say when the house floats up and he leaves the world and flies away. Afterwards, we had these focus groups and not one person asked about. I was like how cool, they believed this crazy moment in the film because they believe the emotional set-up. They bought everything we wanted them to emotionally. To me, that proved emotionally we were on the right track.”

The “Up, Up and Away Balloon” made a promotional appearance at Phoenix’s Wesley Bolin Plaza on Monday, May 18. Lucky contest winners had the opportunity to float high above the city, much like the characters Carl and Russell do in Disney/Pixar’s UP (opening May 29). Members of the press also had the chance to be a part of the experience.

A Film Writer Goes Up, Up and Away!

AZ Weekly Film Writer Randy Montgomery prepares to float high above Phoenix.

Wow, That’s a lot of Balloons!

By Randy Montgomery

“One of the toughest assignments on this film was creating the balloon canopy that carries Carl’s house to South America, says Steve May, UP’s supervising technical director. “It was important to the film to have fairly realistic balloon simulations.” Estimated actual number of balloons needed: Number of balloons in most floating scenes: Number of balloons in lift-off scene:

20-30,000,000 10,297 20,622

The way the balloons acted towards wind and weather and how they were tied and tethered to the house is realistic as well. “This is probably the most complex interaction simulation we’ve ever had to deal with at Pixar.”

Disney/Pixar’s Up, Up and Away Balloon visited Phoenix to promote UP.

“Pasta Bar” “We do things simple here”

For anyone who’s ever gone out to eat for whatever reason, Italian food consistently remains a top favorite for those wanting to eat out, and it’s hard to dispute why people enjoy it as much as they do. Italian cuisine is well-known for being elaborate and well-prepared, but in today’s scene, it’s hard to find an Italian dining establishment that stands out from the rest, as well as one that isn’t too pricey. If you’re in Downtown Phoenix, are looking for a good time at a good price, and want to try something simple, yet exceptional, come on down to the Pasta Bar. Co-owners Nick Gentry and Wade Moises are best friends and worked as chefs in North Scottsdale. Wade

was an executive chef and Nick was a sous-chef de cuisine. A sous-chef is defined as an under-chef, an assistant to the executive chef as well as someone who fills in when the executive chef is unavailable. The two grew tired of working for someone else and thus the time had come for them to open their own place, one that they would make into their own style. Wade himself had studied in Italy and also spent time as a chef in New York, and Nick had brought in the investors to help start the Pasta Bar. Instead of creating just another Italian eatery, Nick and Wade chose to incorporate a Southern Italian style into the Pasta Bar, effectively making it stand apart from the rest. Ingredient-wise, the Pasta Bar uses as much local produce as possible from farmers, ranchers, producers in the Valley, but also ingredients straight from Italy. A list of their

suppliers can be found on their website under the Links section. Nick does not favor one dish over the other. For him to pick a favorite would be like picking a favorite child, such is his love for the Pasta Bar. The Fettuccini e Finocchio is one of the more unique dishes, made up of fennel pesto, raisins, pine nuts, hot peppers, lemon, and anchovy. For those with meat on their minds, try the Fettuccini Tagliatta, a favorite of the clientele, created from charred rib-eye, arugula, cherry tomatoes, roasted garlic, and parmigiano. One of their more simple pastas is the Bavette Cacio de Pepe, consisting of black pepper, Italian butter, and pecorino. Not to worry, Pasta Bar offers an Antipasti menu (the traditional first course in Italian meals) and a Sides menu. Even some of the beverages are imported from Italy, such as the Aqua Panna (spring water from Tuscany) and San Pellegrino (mineral water). Another departure from typical restaurants is the Mexican CocaCola (in glass bottles). Nick desired to serve the Mexican brand due to its use of cane sugar sweetener as opposed to the high-fructose corn syrup in the American version. On the Bar side, all of the wines - the Vini Bianchis (white wine) and Vini Rossis (red wine) - come straight from Italy. The white wines include Ciao Bella Pinot Grigio 2007 ($8/$30), Alois Lageder

Chardonnay 2007 ($11/$40), and the Bastianich Vespa Blanco 2006 ($15/$55). The red wines include the Ciao Bella Sangiovese, 2007 Sicilia ($8/$30), Colosi Nero D’Avola 2007 Sicilia ($7/$27), and the La Mozza Aragone 2005 Toscana ($17/$60). As you can see, all of the wines are priced considerably lower than other establishments, who would charge around $600 for a bottle, but Nick will price the wines based on what they’re worth. Pasta Bar also serves beer (Red Stripe Lager, Sam Adams Light, Four Peaks 8th Street Ale, etc.) and other liquors (Johnnie Walker Blue Label, Crop Organic Vodka, Gentleman Jack, etc.). Since opening in March 2009, Nick has emphasized one thing about the Pasta Bar: “we do things simple here.” Nick’s focus is to do the simple things well so that all of the dishes turn out amazingly tasty. You’ll find any type of customer here, but it’s during the nighttime that the energetic crowd arrives. Pasta Bar is open 11AM - Midnight Sun.Thurs. and 11AM - 2AM Friday and Saturday. 705 N. 1st St. Suite 110 Phoenix, AZ 85004 (602)687-8704 www.pastabaraz.com Info@pastabaraz.com

The scene The best seat in the house is undoubtedly at the sushi bar, across from a 2,000 gallon fish tank. Luckily for all, the expert chefs don’t actually reach in there to prepare the sushi. Nor will they yell at any naive patrons for doing the absolute sushi no-no:

mixing the wasabi with the soy sauce. And that’s the beauty of American chain restaurants: They’re light, airy and (almost always) devoid of culinary snobbery. The food Chopsticks are optional, and the server will help you choose your sake, which is not as natural to sushi as one might assume. We decided to break protocol and choose the sparkling sake. You know, for that nice twinkle in the eye. The tuna wasabi appetizer stood out right away on the menu, consisting of tuna the only way it should be eaten —rare, rolled up in a tortilla and flash fried for good measure. Wasabi sour cream and pico de gallo accompanying the tuna provide a necessary kick, and

Though many steaks and chops grace the menu’s main entrees, it’s just as fun to go with seafood: either the sweet-chili glazed salmon with shrimp and pork fried rice (which comes with Szechwan beans that are a tad unnecessary), or the pan-seared Ahi tuna with sauteed bok choy (a mild Chinese cabbage), steamed white rice and sweet-chili sauce. They are both fresh, generous portions, and this justifies the price to a large extent because it’s not every day someone wants to shell out over $20 per entree. The chili glaze/sauce made the salmon all nice and shiny with just a touch of spice. As a whole, the salmon dish tasted a little too salty and heavy, but that only became apparent after continuing to eat when we should have stopped. As for the tuna, it’s a great lighter alternative that practically melts in your mouth. Kona Grill boasts all the mahoganies, clean lines and dark floors one can expect from a high-end chain, as well as efficient young servers, open kitchen and high ceilings. But clean lines don’t mean there’s no warmth or personality. On the contrary, the restaurant feels enchanting on a Friday night out. You never know, you may find yourself coming back to it, as much for the proximity as you would for the sushi.

Meat lover and sushi lover caught swapping plates.

Kona Grill has received numerous awards over the past six or seven years, ranging from Best Sushi to Best Happy Hour to Best Use of Sausage. … The last one was courtesy of the great state of Texas, one of 17 states in which Kona Grill now resides. For those living in Oak Brook and Lombard, Kona passed the awardwinning flame to our suburbs.

hefty portions of shrimp and pork fried rice means that sharing with a group of two or three is not only advisable, but recommended. The separate sushi menu gives a plethora of different rolls, ranging from Rainbow and Las Vegas to shrimp tempura. Regardless of the choice, Kona’s chefs will have you talking Japanese by the end of the night.

For the Love of Wine By Nathan Mears

I have always been fascinated by history. While my particular interest in history has always been toward the customs and rituals that surround eating and drinking, it goes without saying that I have also paid considerable attention to their food & drink. So, what does my penchant for past cultures have to do with the wines of today? Campania, Italy. This region is a virtual link to the past when it comes to the world of wine; it has a wine growing history reaching back to the time of the first Greek colonies in Italy. In fact, some of the hills lead the Greeks to name their new land “Enotria” or Land of Wine”. Many regions of Italy have moved toward making wines with more “global” appeal; however, Campania has remained steadfast and staked their reputation on ancient, indigenous grape varietals like Fiano, Falanghina and Aglianico. I recently chatted with Lucio, a vintner from the region, and he began our meeting with a brief description of the winery, himself and his family. As an American, one fact hit me like a truck; he and his family have been growing wine grapes in Campania for over three hundred years!!! Most of us haven’t been in Arizona for more than one generation, let alone centuries. Lucio handed me a glass of Greco di Tufo, it had an amazingly, explosive nose of minerals, citrus and an indescribable earthy note. This wine had me thinking about my next sip halfway through the first -- like potato chips one was not enough. Greco di Tufo is a white wine made from a grape of Greek origin aptly named Greco. The “tufo” portion of the name is owed to the Tufa Stone in which the vines grow.

With summer fast approaching and summer-like temperatures already upon us, I have to mention Falanghina. It is a bright, fresh and refreshing white wine perfect for sitting by the pool. And while I have spent ample time proclaiming the virtues of the white wines, the reds of Campania are not to be missed. Aglianico is the red grape of choice; this oddly named ancient grape can make wines fresh and fruit forward with aromas of tobacco and blackberry jam. However, it is also the lone grape in the fabled red wine ‘Taurasi’ or as it is often referred to, the “Barolo of the South”. Rich, complex and long-lived Taurasi is truly one of the best wines Italy has to offer.

You taste and rate 3 Red and 3 White wines and your top rated wines become the Selection of the Month. You’ll receive a 10% off voucher to use in the Bistro Wine Bar as our thank you for your participation. Space is limited for this free event, so sign up today at any of our 3 locations.

BY BRENT DIGGINS AND EFIA MOORE How’d Memorial Day go? While it is the traditional kick off of summer and people in many parts of the country begin to look for things to do outside, here in Arizona we look for things that involve air conditioning and water. Keep on reading to find a few upcoming events that’ll keep you outta the heat and what else happened, is happening and will happen in the Valley. Star Swim: Just in time for the official start of summer, Star Swim pool parties are back and kicked off this past weekend. This summer Star Swim will gather the best native indie rock bands to play poolside atop The Wyndham Hotel to crowds of downtown Phoenix hipsters. Not your average rooftop pool party, Star Swim featured SXSW and Coachella band Dear And The Headlights for its first show. When you go, plan accordingly because Star Swim events will be every Saturday night throughout most of the summer and will feature Kinch, K E N E S S E T, Black Carl, What Laura Says and a special all day party on the Fourth of July. If you were not one of the hipsters lounging poolside last year, you’ll want to be this year. Visit www.StarSwimPHX.com to get your $6.00 tickets and check out the complete band line up. See you there!

GOING OUT FOR A NIGHT ON THE TOWN?

Jay-Z at the Dodge Theater: The Valley has seen a lot of celebrities come and go in the past couple of years, but I have to say next to the President’s visit, I’m most excited about Jay-Z. He will be performing at Phoenix’s Dodge Theatre on Thursday, July 2. I’m a fan of his music, but more so I’m a fan of his legend. In the past seven years Jay-Z has released eight consecutive multi-platinum albums, and “retired” in the process. Not only is he a lyrical genius, he’s a successful entrepreneur with strong ventures such as Roc-A-Fella Records, Rocawear, and the NBA’s New Jersey Jets. He’s also one-half of a power couple that includes equally talented Beyoncé. To see the modern day legend that is Jay-Z perform live get your tickets now at www. livenation.com. Jim Breuer: Maybe some laughs will help to keep you cool. Saturday Night Live alum and frequent “movie stoner,” Jim Breuer

be coming to the Tempe Improv June 4th through 7th. However, as he has grown up, he has changed his act to feature more parent and family-centric jokes. Always a master of facial expressions, Breuer can make you laugh without saying a word, and is most known for his “goat-boy” shtick on SNL. If you want to check him out, you can bbbaaaaahhhhhh tickets for $22-25 (I’m sighing along with you). Blue Martini Lounge: So, for the first time I headed up to City North’s Blue Martini Lounge. As this is fairly close to my home, I don’t know why it has taken me so long, but it’s a nice addition to the “north of the 101” area. There is no doubt; this place is as “Scottsdale” as it comes. With an older crowd that has lots of money and lots of Botox and boobs, Blue Martini reminds me a lot of Barcelona. Cougars are on the prowl, men in expensive shirts and jeans sit at the bar, and shiny foreign sedans are parked outside. If you couldn’t guess, their specialty is the martini, of which, they have a laundry list. With names like “Cookies and Cream,” “Three Chocolates,” and “The Palm Beacher,”all the martinis are sweet, big, and have enough garnish to make a meal out of. They do have wine and other spirits too though so don’t be put off if you don’t like the latest martini trend. The atmosphere is amazing, the wait staff is hot and prompt and the people-watching is top notch. As you may imagine, the prices are pretty high, but they do have a happy hour. For more information, visit bluemartinilounge.com. Night Owl News and Notes: The New Kids on the Block show scheduled for July 12th has moved from Cricket Wireless to the Dodge Theatre; Sprinkles Cupcakes is raising money for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation by selling a brand new flavored cupcake from June 8th – 10th-- the limited edition Triple Chocolate; Stone Rose Lounge and Neiman Marcus are hosting a “Rock n’ Roll Party and Trunk Show” with Designer Mitchell Binder of King Baby Studios on May 29th; Local company Harkins’ Theatres launched a pretty cool new website at harkinstheatres.com. Be safe, be a good person. Till next time…

Things Heating Up for Diamonback’s Upton Fast, friendly, fun to watch and full of talent, the Arizona Diamondbacks’ Justin Upton seems to have all the tools one would need for a long career with plenty of illustrious achievements. Just 21 years old, the talented yet still developing Upton seems to have all the ability in the world. He has performed quite nicely for the Diamondbacks thus far this season, however most believe we’ve only seen a sneak peak as to what awaits in his impressive bag of tricks. The No. 1 overall pick by the Diamondbacks in the 2005 First-Year Player Draft, fans and management alike were quick to predict the competitive outfielder would soon become the talented face of the franchise. Having been labeled the best prospect since Ken Griffey Jr., hometown fans could hardly wait to see the speedy Upton in a D-back jersey. Thus far, the fans and his team have not been disappointed.

(5th and Mill in Downtown Tempe)

An immediate threat in every aspect of the game, Upton has been one of Arizona’s spotlight topics of discussion so far this season. He’s batting .310 with seven homeruns, owns a team leading 20 RBIs and with plenty of speed, 4 stolen bases. He has earned himself the No. 3 spot in the lineup, where 15-for-39 so far this year adorns a team-leading .385 batting average. Although the young talent has opened plenty of eyes in his career thus far, it seems as if he’s about to break loose with a display of talent his team is certainly in need of. With an arsenal of skills, he seems to have calmed the urgency, harnessed his aggression, found his swing - and perhaps himself in the process. He’s worked plenty hard to be patient, knowing exactly when and where to unleash his undeniable skill and aggression both offensively and defensively. With tremendous talent at such a young age comes the need to learn when and where to turn up the volume and set yourself loose.

Do the current Los Angeles Lakers have a chance to go down as one of the best Lakers teams in history?

26 26

This may indeed be one of the most “talented” Lakers squads, the majority will say, but labeling them one of the “best” would be wrong. “Best” coincides May 28th - June3rd, 2009

He’s opened plenty of eyes around the league, yet there’s something in the ballpark air these days. Something particularly special,

suggesting he’s soon to break loose with crowd-pleasing displays of talent. The level of play his team so desperately needs.

with dominance. And as good as these Lakers can be, they have not shown any character traits of a team that can dominate another team or a series. The great, great Lakers teams -- the ones we still talk about -- did more than just find a way to get it done. They made statements. What statements have these Lakers made? Even their leader called them “bipolar” at times. Even if this Lakers team wins a championship, it won’t be a definitive squad, like the one with Magic, Kareem, Worthy, Byron Scott and Michael Cooper.

This Lakers team, although very good, isn’t overloaded with Hall of Famers like some of those previous Lakers teams. But of course with winning, comes much discussion – the very core of what it means to be passionate for your hometown team. Let them talk - and let the chips fall where they may.

on top. Made of lightweight silk chiffon, the sweetheart neckline has a lovely little knot detail, something great for accentuating a smaller bustline.

Finding any Marc Jacobs or Marc by Marc Jacobs women’s dresses for under $200 dollars is pretty exciting. Normally most of MJ’s dresses start at around $300…and go up higher. Much higher. Try on something like this Zig Zag Jersey Dress and you’re sure to love it. It came out as part of a pre-spring ready to wear line, and is extremely comfortable! Originally priced at $298, the dress is now marked down to $178.80… not a bad price. The sleeveless top has a scoop neck, and the skirt is gathered with an all over, funky zig zag pattern. The silk/rayon blend is super soft and swingy. This could definitely be worn into fall also, just throw on a little cropped jacket and you’re good to go. This dress looks vintage, the cut and the chevron stripes do it for most. This is an all around perfect summer dress. Printed Silk Chiffon Whitney Short Dress. This peachy color is fabulous and perfect for the summer season. This dress would be ideal for a wedding, party, or just even out to dinner with a little jacket or sweater May 28th - June3rd, 2009

Short and Sweet: Women’s Top 5 Short Styles for Summer You may have noticed the baggier, cut offs are coming around back in style again for summer. Highwaisters will still be big, but it’ll be refreshing to get back to the basics. Of course cutting old jeans never fails, and you can control the length of them as you wear them, either cutting shorter after a few wears or simply cuffing the bottoms. This is a favorite look right now… combined with a super soft tee shirt or pretty flowy blouse, this is a nofail, maximum comfort outfit for the warmer months. It of course looks great with sandals, even cowboy boots! Not a big surprise. So, let the search begin, afterall the thrill of the hunt is most of the fun! These Billie Distressed Cuffed Shorts by Genetic are one of many favorites. They look so comfy! The all over distressing and whiskering is another nice effect. Wear these with a super girly blouse or tee to balance rugged and delicate. Billie Distressed Cuffed Shorts by Genetic The Striped Button Tab Shorts are a

The back pockets are the Hudson signature triangle shape, and the cotton denim has elastane in it, so these will wear really well and break in perfectly. Summer wouldn’t be complete without a pair of safari-inspired shorts like these Joie Denise Cargo Shorts. Even go full safari and wear these with a white button down shirt

Adoption Grandparents’ Rights Pre-Marital Agreements Legal Separation Appeals

1. Drink plenty of water. At least a gallon of water should be consumed every day. Water will not only keep your body hydrated, but it will help carry waste out of your body. Avoid “designer” water and carbonated “water”. These products, while still better than most beverages, are not water and do not carry the same benefits. “But I don’t like water” you say. Learn to love it. It loves you. 2. Eat 5-8 meals per day, every 2-3 hours. This should be nothing new to anyone. Just in case, the primary reason for increasing the frequency of food consumption is to increase your metabolic rate. If your body is in a constant state of using up the calories you consume, there won’t be much room for those nasty fat cells to start filling up. If possible, you should try to count your calorie consumption. 10xyour body weight= calories per day. So if I want to lose weight and I weigh 205lbs then I should shoot for 2050 calories per day. Eat more, not less. 3. If it breathes, eat it. Your diet should consist of an abundance of fish, poultry, lean cuts of beef, vegetables, fruit, and nuts. Natural food is much friendlier to your digestive system and your body will thank you for it. Try to eat a vegetable with every meal. Even if you don’t want to count calories, these meals will provide a rich balance of nutrients and promote fat loss. 4. Breakfast is really the most important meal of the day. Most people don’t eat a good breakfast, if they eat anything at all. This meal is crucial. Remember how your body works better when in a constant metabolic state? Well, you just slept for 8 hours, and you weren’t eating anything. Your body is starving and if you don’t eat something soon, your metabolism will slow down and begin to store that fat you’ve worked so hard to get rid of. The best things to eat in the morning when focusing on fat loss are nuts and meat. Try to avoid sugars this early, as your body is highly insulin sensitive after a fast and you don’t want to feed the beast when it’s most hungry.

5. Eat something before bed. A popular myth in the diet world is that any meal consumed before bed will turn into fat overnight. This couldn’t be further from the truth. You must eat before you sleep in order to keep your metabolism working while you’re enduring an extended fast. The best foods to eat are slow-digesting proteins such as yogurt or cottage cheese. 6. High Fructose Corn Syrup is the devil. This widely popular sweetener is probably the single worst “food” you can subject your body to. It holds no nutritional value and will serve only to spike your insulin levels and help you pack on fat. HFCS is found in most processed foods and should be avoided at all costs. 7. Forget about “carbs.” The recent trend of demonizing carbohydrates has got to stop. They’re not as bad as people think. Focus on whole grains and vegetables and fruits. These are all carbohydrate-rich foods, and all very helpful in promoting fat loss. Things to avoid are refined carbs. Basically, anything that’s fake: white bread and bagels, refined sugar, most breakfast cereal and almost anything in the “snack” aisle. Also, be careful of packaged, dried fruit. Most of it has added HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP which instantly destroys any nutritional value the fruit may have provided. 8. Fish oil is your friend. This is a tough one. This one is even tough for me. Fish oil comes in capsules now, so you don’t have to taste it going down, but you will taste it throughout the day, and that’s not fun. However, with that said, fish oil is a huge help in reducing body fat. And it’s relatively inexpensive. Again, this will be a tough one to swallow (pun intended), but if you really want to get that six-pack, it will sure help. 9. Train your body with weights. This should be obvious, but for some reason, it’s overlooked. The average person feels that cardio alone will help promote fat loss. In fact, steady state cardiovascular work will put your body in a catabolic state, burn muscle as well as fat, and will increase your performance at running on a treadmill, or using a recumbent bike or elliptical machine, depending on what you’re doing. By training your body with weights, you will increase your muscle density. Muscle tissue will burn calories at a rate that is roughly 70 times that of fat. Basically, the more muscle you have, the easier it will be to lose fat. Now, especially for the women,

increasing muscle density is not the same as increasing muscle size. You will not look like “those women” on ESPN with all the rippling muscles. These women work very hard to look like that, and you will never look like them unless you absolutely want to, and train to that end. Bottom line, weight training is key to fat loss. 10. Don’t follow the rules 100% of the time. How will you ever make progress if you’re miserable with your diet? If you love to drink blue slurpees and eat snickers bars, then don’t eliminate

them completely from your diet. Taking a break from time to time is actually a good thing. This doesn’t give you license to start eating everything in sight or to order the 5-5-5 from Dominoes for yourself, but one day per week you can go a little nuts, just keep it under control. This serves two purposes. One, the diet will be easier to stick to when you can keep eating the foods you really enjoy from time to time. Two, your metabolism will get a nice kick-start and begin working overtime to move all those sugars and calories around that it isn’t used to.

Review and picture by Chad Haire

If you want to know what my favorite car is, it’s the BMW 3-Series as seen here. The body structure is built like a tank and the interior materials are first-rate and solid. The styling is conservative, yet still draws attention, especially with the bright red paint I had. Under the hood, a 3.0 liter inline six-cylinder is rated at only 230 horsepower, but still accelerates to 60 mph in a brisk 6.5 seconds. This motor loves to spin to its 7000 rpm redline and the slick 6-speed manual gearbox is just the ticket to assist. An automatic is offered. Gas mileage

The base price for a 328 starts at $35,300. This includes a long list of standard equipment. With optional stuff like leather trim, navigation, laser cruise-control, upgraded stereo and turbo engine, the tab can reach 50 grand. But the 3-Series is still the best compact car made and certainly worth the fee.

stranded. And only BMW dealers keep these in stock, so even if you reach the repair depot, you might be stranded anyway. Add to this a $500 each replacement cost and we can see why R-F tires are a bad choice. Either way, don’t leave the dealer’s lot without a spare tire and jack.

BMW 328

is listed at 20-29 mpg. Driving from Bullhead City to Phoenix, I got 31 and at 60 mph cruising, we saw 34! A turbo engine with 300 horses is offered for more money. The 3-Series has a comfortable ride when equipped with standard tires. Unfortunately, we got the optional run-flat tires. They provided a stiff, jagged ride with all the usual thump and bump noises on rough pavement; totally out of place on this nice car. Why do they offer them? Well, if you get a flat, they can run for an additional 50 miles. But R-F tires don’t come with a spare, so if the repair shop is further away, you’re

Colin Hay Brings Sunshine to Cave Creek

Men at Work were together only four and a half years. They released 3 studio albums although the third hadn’t met the same commercial success. Nonetheless, this short lived project had made a distinct impression on the pop music culture. After the band separated in the mid 80’s front man Colin Hay continued doing what he knows best – singing and song writing. Even though his time with Men at Work may have put his name on the map his solo career has proved to have much greater staying power. Hay’s 10th studio album, American Sunshine is due out in August. He’s been one of Ringo Starr’s “all stars” twice. He might have a few more wrinkles now, but his silky smooth voice hasn’t changed at all. Hay performed an acoustic show at the Cave Creek Coffee Company last Friday to a packed house and entertained the audience between songs with anecdotes and absolutely hilarious stories. He performed the

signature Men at Work material that everyone knows (“Land Down Under”, “Who Can It Be Now” and “Overkill”) mixed in with a good scattering of solo material; some slow and emotional songs like “Melbourne Song” from the album Peaks and Valleys, “Beautiful World” from the album Going Somewhere, and a few songs from “American Sunshine”. Aside from his incredible voice, “entertainer” should be added to his “singer/songwriter” title. But whatever happens, don’t let the Men at Work persona label who or what Hay is. He’s so much more.

Along with brand new songs from their forthcoming fulllength, the pop-punk quintet will also be armed with a limited edition 7” featuring “New Sensation” and a newer version of “Alex In Wonderland”, both of which will be on the debut full-length, due out early Fall. The vinyl is pressed on white and limited to 500 pieces, only available at the band’s shows and their online merch store. Visit. myspace.com/thistimenextyear or myspace.com/badlandsmusicvenue for more information.

Amy Kuney will be performing with Angel Taylor and Kate Voegele at Martini Ranch on Wednesday June 3rd at 7pm. She is an up and coming singer/songwriter who released her debut album Birds Eye View in August of 2008 and has gotten some great attention. Not only have Kuney’s songs landed on One Tree Hill and the daytime drama Passions, she also played a folk singer on a memorable episode of Gilmore Girls, an occurrence she modestly chalks up to “beginner’s luck.” The onstage presence and authority she displays is impressive for an artist of any age, and that’s before you even notice her songwriting, which resounds with finely observed details and engaging left turns. Visit myspace.com/ amykuney or www.martiniranchaz. net for more information.

Phoenix- One of the biggest sensations of last summer were the Star Swim pool parties, held at the historic Hotel San Carlos. Every weekend some of the best native indie rock bands played by the roof top pool to huge crowds of downtown hipsters. The events were such a smash that for 2009 they had to be moved to a larger venue, The Wyndham Hotel, located at 50 E. Adams St. in Phoenix, just a block south of last year’s location. The lineup for Saturday May 30th is Kinch, Aushua, Yellow Minute and Cardiac Party. Tickets are $6. Visit www.starswimphx.com for more details.
