of family activities, including a farmer’s market, an ice cream social, a kid’s fun zone, rockclimbing wall, live music, beer garden, and much more. In addition, there will be many watermelon-centric activities like a watermelon tossing contest, a seed-spitting contest and a melon-carving competition, featuring chefs from California and local resorts. This year’s festival will also revive the old watermelon festival queen by naming Miss Arizona Festival through the United States Organization Pageants. The pageant is sponsored by Get Image Ready, AZ Culture, CXI Media, and the

Glam Squad (for more information go to www.missazfestival.com). Glendale was an agriculturallydriven community in its early days, and watermelons were a favored crop among Glendale growers. Melons were a big business locally for many years. In the 1950s, the melon festival was formed, drawing crowds in the tens of thousands to Murphy Park to celebrate Arizona-grown melons of all types. More than 80,000 pounds of watermelon was served to crowds of about 40,000 people. Another major part of the festival was to crown a queen, who was sent to the East Coast to
promote Arizona-grown melons. The event, produced by AZ Culture, is organized by a group of downtown merchants and also sponsored by the Glendale Convention & Visitors Bureau, TSO Signature Apparel, T-Mobile, Hampton Inn & Suites, and Coors Light. The event will benefit the Peoria/Glendale YMCA, Linking Sports and Communities, and the Glendale Civic Pride Ambassadors. ‘The Kings of Summer’ Nick Robinson, Gabriel Basso and Moises Arias play three teenage friends who, in the ultimate act of independence, decide to spend their summer building a house in the woods and living off the land. (PG-13 - 93 minutes) Stan: Reflective of those times in our lives when each of us felt that our generation is misunderstood or perhaps overlooked, director Jordan Vogt-Roberts presents a view of three teenage friends who act upon the thoughts that most entertain when the pressures of the adults around them seem too much. The repercussions of their inexperienced move toward independence serves as lessons for both young teens and adults alike, to strive just a bit harder to find common ground for communication.
Joseph: “The Kings of Summer” is, without a doubt, one of the most refreshingly original motion pictures that you will see all year. It is quirky, charming, funny, sophisticated and incredibly creative. Having said that, its premise is somewhat thin with screenwriter Chris Galletta failing to find much for his characters to do once they make their initial escape from commonality. The comingof-age comedy also features engrossingly eccentric grownups (played by Nick Offerman, Megan Mullally and Marc Evan Jackson) who, of all times, play second fiddle to the not-allthat-likeable kids. Still, director Jordan Vogt-Roberts extracts a sweet-natured emotional resonance from this teenage tale.
BET, YOU

Randy: My favorite film screened at the Phoenix Film Festival this year. I have Mike Myer’s wife suggested he dance in the movie during the credits, which eagerly been awaiting the is a continuing trademark of the Austin theatrical release to view this Powers films, since he dances around modern-day, instant classic his own house in the buff! once again. Destined to be AZWeeklyMagazine.com
‘Tiger Eyes’ Willa Holland plays a girl who, after her father is killed in a hold-up, visits her relatives in New Mexico where she befriends a young man (Tatanka Means) who helps her find the strength to carry on and conquer her fears. (PG-13 - 92 minutes) Joseph: At a time when movies targeted to the teen demographic tend to be overwrought with cheesy romance and hokey supernatural elements, “Tiger Eyes” is a breath of fresh air. Writer/director Lawrence Blume adapts his mother Judy’s young adult novel in such a way that retains its rich message about the curative power of connection and adds additional depth to it through the symbolic beauty that is unique to the visual medium. Blume perhaps attempts to pack too much of the experience of approaching adulthood into a single story but this remains a restorative cinematic achievement.
SOUNDBITE SPOTLIGHT The following quotes were pulled from interviews conducted by AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s film columnists with talent speaking on behalf of movies recently released in theaters.
Filmmaker Alex Gibney, Part 1 (We Steal Secrets: The Story of WikiLeaks) By Stan Robinson
‘We Steal Secrets: The Story of WikiLeaks’ Filmmaker Alex Gibney details the creation of Julian Assange’s controversial website WikiLeaks, which facilitated the largest security breach in U.S. history. (R - 130 minutes)
“I got a phone call from Mark Smugger, the former co-chairman of Universal. Mark had been following the story and felt very strongly that a documentary should be made about it. There were a number of fiction films in the works but he felt that the characters were so extraordinary and powerful, and the themes that were being reckoned with were so powerful, and the world of the Internet was so interesting and important to examine that he (Mark Smugger) really encouraged me to take it on. He had seen a film I did called ‘Client Nine: The Rise and Fall of Elliot Smitcher’, liked it, and asked if I would do a film on WikiLeaks. I was busy,
Stan: Prominent in the news in sound bite fashion, director Alex Gibney presents a view that doesn’t take sides as the ‘blanks’ are examined relative to secrets, government, and citizens right to know. I learned as a news film editor early on in my production career, the five W’s are the prime directive for getting the complete story on a subject. As I applied them to ‘We Steal Secrets: The Story of WikiLeaks’, I was left with the thought ‘What a powerful piece of filmmaking’ and compelled to find out the current status of Julian Assange and WikiLeaks. Here’s those five W’s to add to your memory bank. Who is it about? What happened? When did it take place? Where did it take place? Why did it happen?
but this was a story that I had certainly been following. If he could get the resources to follow it, in all of its complexity, than I said ‘Sure, let’s do it’ and I jumped on board, and Mark was able to get the money from Universal and off we went!

viewer enough to want to learn more. Director Alex Gibney does just that. The WikiLeaks story unravels like a soap opera with more characters than a Telenovela. It also leaves the viewer asking questions about our government, cover-ups and more. A definite contender for Best Documentary of the Year.
“It was a couple of years in the making and the shooting didn’t stop once the editing began. It was one of those things where even in the cutting room we were following the story because is was still unfolding and there were people who we were still trying to get on camera, so it never really stopped. Your question of what type of resistance from the ‘powers that be’ is interesting indeed. We were trying to fly under the radar, while the film was announced early on, I was kind of sorry that it was announced because we where trying to ‘fly low’ and not make to big of a noise because that was very much of our hope that by so doing, we wouldn’t be a target. “The studio, I have say, was always very supportive. The notes we got from the studio were good, and even the legal team was quite supportive, even though doing a documentary like this is sometimes and necessarily involving things like ‘fair use’ which are not normally part of the feature film rule book. So Universal and Focus World has been very supportive of the film! You asked about ‘autonomy’ in making the film, Universal gave me final cut on the film.“ – Alex Gibney Next week in part 2 of my conversation with Alex Gibney, he talks about the public reaction, and the complexity of the story of WikiLeaks’.
Randy: A good documentary should give the viewer enough information to adequately cover all points of the story, but intrigue the AZWeeklyMagazine.com

AMERICAN SINGER-SONGWRITER SPENCER DAY LIVE AT MIM Friday, June 7th at 7:30pm American singer-songwriter and pianist Spencer Day creates an effortless blend of classic jazz, pop, soul, and folk music that has drawn his comparison with everyone from Harry Connick Jr. to Jamie Cullum. Born in Utah and raised in Arizona by his mother, who was an accomplished music teacher and lyric soprano, Day spent his formative years soaking in the works of Cole Porter, George Gershwin, Joni Mitchell, and Paul Simon. The Mystery of You, Day’s new album is filled with stylistic nuances that range from smoky noir and surf guitar to Latin jazz and Middle Eastern and Asian melodies. The album tracks the sometimes exhilarating, sometimes harrowing arc of a romantic relationship, from passionate beginning to painful demise to enlightened aftermath. More than just a survivor’s tale, The Mystery of You is Day’s affirmation to anyone within the sound of his voice that navigating the human experience is an ongoing balancing act. Tickets: $25.50–$32.50. Circle of Friends donors who give $500+ annually are eligible for 10% off concert tickets. Call 480-478-6000 or visit www.themim.org for more information.
LOVE, LOSS, AND WHAT I WORE June 4-16 at Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts Proving that a great show is always in fashion, Love, Loss, and What I Wore, with its starry rotating cast and compulsively entertaining subject matter, has become an international hit. This intimate collection of stories by Nora Ephron and Delia Ephron is based on the best seller by Ilene Beckerman, as well as on the recollections of the Ephrons’ friends. Like the popular book, the show uses clothing and accessories and the memories they trigger to tell funny and often poignant stories that all women can relate to, creating one of the most enduring theater experiences. The all-star cast features Dee Hoty (Mamma Mia!), Sabrina LeBeauf (The Cosby Show), Amanda Setton (The

Mindy Project), Zuzanna Szadkowski (Gossip Girl) and Dawn Wells (Gilligan’s Island). Social Media Night Thursday, June 6, 7:30 p.m. During this performance, audience members may live-tweet and enjoy a one-night-only Q-and-A session with the cast. Special seating will be required to live-tweet during the show. Call 480-499TKTS (8587) or visit the Patron Services Box Office to secure your “tweet seats” for this fun and entertaining night. Group Discounts Save $4 per ticket and at least $15 in facility fees when purchasing 10 or more tickets to Love, Loss, and What I Wore. Group discounts not available online. Swap the Hallmark Card for Race Results at Octane Raceway, America’s largest indoor kart racing venue, welcoming all Dads to embrace fun in the fast lane this Father’s Day! More than likely your dad was the one who put you back on your bike after you fell the first time. He let you sleep while he drove on long road trips. He bought your first tool set, which probably came in handy when the ‘Chief Mechanic’ had to fix something you broke. He taught you how to drive a car, and if you were lucky, it was a 5-speed. He was the ‘Title Sponsor’ for all your sports activities and your biggest fan. Pay those memories forward by indulging dad with a little adventure this Father’s Day at Octane Raceway’s 4th Annual Man Brunch. Bring the kids, friends and family for a very manly brunch. Breakfast favorites of eggs, bacon, sausage, waffles, hash browns, coffee and juice will be served.
Then it’s time to grab your helmet and race to the checkered flag. Will you be able to beat Dad’s lap time? This Father’s Day, Sunday, June 16. Brunch is served at 9:00am with the first kart races of the day beginning at 9:30am. Racing continues all day until 8:00pm. Brunch and one Kart Race is $24.95 per person. BEER HUNTER THE MOVIE Recently, I had the great pleasure to watch the Arizona premiere of Beer Hunter The Movie, a documentary of sorts featuring Michael Jackson. Not that one, the other one. First off, many thanks to the Arizona Society of Homebrewers (ASH) for purchasing the Arizona rights to this film. I am certain that you will have opportunities to see it throughout the state. Back to the story… Michael was an English writer and journalist whose books have sold over three million copies worldwide. It was his second book, The World Guide to Beer, first published in 1977
that is frequently credited with creating an interest in beer and breweries throughout the world. The book also popularized the concept of beer styles. Ultimately, Michael Jackson may be the person most responsible for our ability to drink a wide variety of amazing beers from just about every country. Now, don’t get me wrong, certainly Fritz Maytag with Anchor Brewing, Bert Grant of Yakima Brewing and Malting Company, Jack McAuliffe of New Albion Brewing Company and many more are the ones who actually created and championed the craft beers we get in the United States. Likewise, there are hundreds of breweries in Europe and other places that have made great beer for centuries and would continue to make great beer even if Michael Jackson had never written a word. What
Michael did was to coalesce a scattered beer community and get people to realize that there were great beers everywhere and with a little bit of effort, you too could enjoy them. I know that after reading some of his early works, I found myself skipping the regular beer aisles to look for Belgian, English and other imported beers I had never tried before. Later, as craft beer grew in popularity I was checking that aisle first and then the import aisle.
Michael Jackson is a legend in the world of craft brewing. His 1977 book, The World Guide to Beer, was the first of its kind, and the first to categorize almost every major style of beer in the world. His 1993 television series, The Beer Hunter, became an instant classic, and helped Continued On Page 42
I don’t intend to review the movie here except to say it is a must see for anybody who drinks better beer. Instead I would rather let the filmmaker, J.R. Richards tell you about the movie. J.R. Richards was hired in 2003 to produce promotional videos for Michael Jackson’s Rare Beer Club. Mr. Richards has this to say:
Big Sky Seasonal Summer Honey Ale now available, get some! Enjoy your Memorial Week end, we thank our U.S. Military”

launch the spectacular craft beer movement that we take for granted today. Michael’s engaging writing literally saved many styles of beer from extinction, and his work inspired an entire generation of brewers to experiment with beer styles from around the world. Many in the beer world are unaware that Michael was also the leading author on the subject of whiskey, and his books on whiskey have sold more copies worldwide than his books on beer. His sudden death in 2007, at the age of 65, shocked the beer and whiskey worlds. His legacy and contributions were substantial, and should be recognized and remembered. As a person, Michael was one of the best, as those fortunate enough to know him can attest to.

I first met Michael in London in 2004, and began producing DVD tasting segments for his Rare Beer Club. As time went by, I was sent out to follow Michael on his many trips through Europe and the U.S., and we discussed the idea of making a documentary, or even another Beer Hunter series. After Michael’s passing, it was decided that the footage from these travels should be made into a documentary. Through this rare visual record we are treated to an intimate picture of Michael, as he traveled to beer meccas such as Belgium, the Czech Republic, Ireland, California, and the Delaware Valley. Woven into this unprecedented library of Michael’s later years will be current interviews with the world’s leading brewers, distillers, and beer enthusiasts, giving us insight into Michael’s enigmatic personality, his remarkable contributions to beer and whiskey, and his secret struggle with Parkinson’s Disease. It is the filmmakers’ hope that through the movie and series, fans of Michael’s work will gain a more

complete picture of his life and story, and greatly expand their knowledge of craft beer: its history, geography, and enjoyment. The filmmakers have launched a worldwide fund-raising effort within the craft beer and whiskey communities to help with production on the film. Proceeds from the film and fund raising efforts will go towards Parkinson’s research, and the producers hope to establish a non-profit foundation dedicated to preserving Michael’s legacy through annual events on March 27th, to coincide with Michael’s birth date. See…he says it much better than I ever could. I did have the opportunity to meet Michael on several occasions, and while each time was after the Parkinson’s had begun to take its toll on him, I still found him engaging and informative… and yes he did seem drunk. In fact, Michael only went public with his Parkinson ’s disease because of persistent rumors that he was always drunk. At the time of his death Michael was writing a book on the enigmatic disease that is Parkinson’s. The title? “I’m Not Drunk.” The reason for the roughly 850 words above is to get to this point. What made Michael so incredible was his absolute reverence for whatever he was handed to drink. Regardless of whether he was drinking an everyday beer or the rarest of the rare beers, he would take time to appreciate it for what it was…and he realized how important each of these beers were. Not to say that he liked every beer, he didn’t. The only thing I have ever found that he wrote about Arizona had to do with it not being a great beer state because of a certain chili pepper beer he had tried on a Continued On Page 45

Hangin’ w/ La Guillotine! By “King” James Swann Hello again craft beer lovers, today let’s do an old fashioned beer review. Recently my weekly rants have had more to do with goings on in our quaint little beer community and oddly enough not much to do with actual beer. Having said so, I’d love to tell you about a Belgian brew that just hit our (completely) sandy desert shores. It’s called La Guillotine and is made by Delirium, makers of world famous Tremens blonde. Much like Tremens, this beer is blonde as well, but with a bit more colour. From the tap it pours clean, clear golden pale with a thick white long lasting head. The flavour, however, takes this brew way beyond the realm of its brother brew. This little gem is sweet with lots of malt character and a TON of apple and citrus fruit. What I love about this brew is the balance. The malt bill balances the yeast and citrus character with an almost doughy mouth feel that really set it apart in this segment.
Check out where to enjoy and purchase these local brands on “Beer Spy” at www.worldclassbeer.com AZWeeklyMagazine.com
ABV. comes in at a stout 8.5% but again doesn’t kill the flavour balance and can be quite deceiving after having a few tulips. TRUST ME! Consider this the perfect brew to pair with dessert items like caramel apples with vanilla bean ice cream or summer salads with seasonal fruits, grilled chicken and a chilled yogurt dressing. All in all, a great way to “buzz” into summer. Until next week, cheers! June 5th, 2013 -June 11th, 2013

Anyway, back to this reverence and appreciation he had for all beers. When you see the movie you will see how he handles each and every beer, in fact each and every sip… none are wasted. Michael realized, that to truly consider yourself a lover of anything it is critical to love it entirely and not be swayed only by the special features. The flagship
beer from a brewery is just as special as the thirty dollar limited release bottle that is only brewed once a year. Granted one may be more complex and flavorful than the other, but each is to be enjoyed and savored. As we have learned from Michael, you never know which beer will be your last, so take the time and make the effort to appreciate everything equally. When your time comes, then you can say you were a true connoisseur of beer.

ALBUM REVIEWS JC Brooks & the Uptown Sound Create Primal Howl, Daft Punk Releases Funky Random Access Memories Indie soul band JC Brooks & the Uptown Sound’s latest release, Howl, is one hell of a record. The title track’s rockabilly sound will have you dancing like a madman before long, while “Rouse Yourself” is more in the vein of the classic, sexual soul music of the ‘70s. Brooks himself is a charismatic singer who can bring it down a notch on airy, upbeat numbers like “Security,” or subtly drive home a message of suspicion on the funky “Ordinary.” “Control” is one of the album’s highlights as it employs echoing, otherworldly guitars and is paired nicely with Brooks’ most consistently deep, haunted vocal effort on the album. Moody one minute, bombastic the next, Howl is a fine record.
French duo Daft Punk’s latest release, Random Access Memories, just debuted at #1 on Billboard’s Top 200 chart; and it only took them 20 years to get to the top. In addition to being obvious titles, tracks like “Give Life Back to Music” and “Lose Yourself to Dance” are filled with the sort of funky dance beats and disco rhythms that will get any party hopping, while the space-agey disco of “Touch” adds a nice layer to the overall flow of the album. Guest appearances by Pharrell Wlliams and Paul Williams are welcome surprises, as is “Motherboard,” which combines hypnotic rhythms, subtle keys, acoustic guitar strumming and trippy percussion. Random Access Memories demonstrates why Daft Punk has outlasted so many EDM acts over the years—they’re just too damn good to think about quitting. AZWeeklyMagazine.com

behind his huge success.
The New Tempe Improv is excited to welcome back to its stage Arizona native and comedy favorite Pablo Francisco. Pablo is one of the most popular touring comedians worldwide. His two Comedy Central one-hour comedy specials “They Put It Out There” and “Ouch!” continue to stay on the networks most requested list. Pablo hits his mark every time, weaving together his one of a kind arsenal of characters, spontaneous outbursts, spot on impressions and clever insights to create a stand-up show that more resembles an hour-long comedic jazz riff. Pablo’s show is an entertaining and off-the-wall performance that delivers the laughs and points out the hilarious absurdities in an illogical, popculture obsessed world.
Pablo’s astounding popularity is not limited to the stage. His outrageously funny material and pervasive Internet presence has captivated over 10 million YouTube viewers around the world. Francisco’s worldwide fan base continues to grow with over 111,655 Facebook fans and thousands of Twitter followers.
Those who experience Pablo’s show for the first time find themselves captivated by his hilarious dead on impressions. Gene Lavanchy of FOX – TV Boston calls Pablo “the most talented comedian in the business today”. His unbelievable ability to physically morph himself into movie stars, singers, friends, family, and a multitude of nationalities gives Pablo’s show a universal charm. His drop-dead funny spoofing often leaves his audiences struggling to catch their breath, which is the driving force

INCREDIBLE MUSIC, DRINKS, & YOU!
Dueling piano shows are a fun way to enjoy a live show and be involved at the same time. Interactive piano entertainers are a select niche of musicians in the country, and in part 2 of his series, Randy Keith explores the entertainment in the East Valley of Wes and Nick Dueling Pianos (www.azduelingpianos.com). Nick Garza, a native Arizonian, brings his local experience to his shows along with Wes Ringel, a New Jersey native. Wes has traveled the country in the last few years, playing many different clubs and restaurants, with some of the most respected players in the Dueling Piano business. Wes and Nick’s large repertoire includes lots of newer and alternative genres that some “traditional” duelers don’t always explore.
After working stints at both the Big Bang (Tempe) and Shout! House (Glendale/Westgate), Wes partnered with Nick (and occasionally other piano colleagues) to tailor shows for local, smaller crowds on the East side. They bring the party to “The Harp Pub” in Mesa on Friday nights and Wes leads a “keyboard karaoke” show at “The Amsterdam” on Sunday nights. The duo has also performed at Kokpelli’s winery in Chandler and Harvey’s American Public House in Gilbert, with upcoming appearances at Harvey’s on July 20th and August 31st. Come early (before 9pm) to grab a seat and stump them with your favorite off-the-wall requests!
