WE’RE HERE FOR YOU

Arts Fund-Raising Campaign Won’t Empty Your Wallet and Could Leave You Feeling Quite Satisifed on Many Levels The effort to raise much-needed funds for Valley arts and cultural organizations is not designed to empty your wallet, but it may fill your stomach. The concept that many donations as small as $ 10 could add up to big dollars is the driving force behind the effort to encourage as many of the state’s 1.2 million arts supporters as possible to visit MyArtsCommunity.org to make a contribution. Now, California Pizza Kitchen is offering to help the campaign by donating 20% of the entire check (for food as well as alcohol) for any customer showing a special fund-raising flyer on Thursday, June 11 at the following locations: (24th St. and Camelback, Tempe Marketplace, Desert Ridge Marketplace, Chandler Fashion Center, Dana Park in Mesa and 10100 N. Scottsdale Rd., Scottsdale). Customers must dine in the restaurants to use the flyers, which can be downloaded from the MyArtsCommunity.org web site.

The Phoenix Zoo

The six-week pilot campaign, which ends June 15, is designed to help the Valley’s 16 largest arts and cultural organizations weather the economic storm. If the campaign is successful, it will be used for a statewide fund-raising effort for more than 300 arts and cultural organizations in the fall. Visitors to MyArtsCommunity.org can select the organization they wish to donate to or contribute to an undesignated fund for later distribution. Donors also can write checks. All donations will be held at the Arizona Community Foundation.

Now it’s your turn to perform. No one has to remind you about the current economic crisis. But you may not be aware that the Valley’s arts and cultural organizations have been hit especially hard by budget cuts and are now in urgent need of our financial support. With a nominal donation of $10, $25, $50 or $100, you can participate in the Valley’s largest arts and cultural organizations at

a whole new level and help these valuable local assets endure these difficult times. Please visit MyArtsCommunity.org before June 15 to make your donation or call 602-682-2057 for more information or to pay by check. Help keep your local arts and cultural community alive.

Movie review by Stan Robinson After a few moments, the central characters along with the 1930’s time frame, Easy Virtue transports us to a time we’ve only maybe read about, or seen in movies. The lead actors are two of my favorites. I started paying close attention to Jessica Biel in 2005’s Stealth. The following year, she starred in my best film of 2006 The Illusionist. Her next movie is Powder Blue, which further broadens the range of Jessica Biel. Also starring is Kristin Scott Thomas who appears in French language films as well English speaking movies. Since starring in The Horse Whisperer (1998), directed by, and starring Robert Redford along with a young Scarlett Johansson, I’ve been an admirer of Kristin Scott Thomas’ work. She starred in my favorite foreign film of 2008 (French), I’ve Loved You So Long which won the best foreign language film in England’s equivalent to the Oscars®, the British Academy of Film and Television Arts Awards (BAFTA Awards). It’s the 1930’s and John Whittaker (Ben Barnes), a young Englishman traveling in the U.S., meets and falls madly in love with Larita (Jessica Biel), a sexy and glamorous American

woman. They marry and travel to England to meet his side of the family. John and Larita are of the 30’s generation having experienced the roaring twenties of big city life. When the couple return to the family home, Larita discovers the estate and family occupants are steeped in generations of stuffy English traditions, and her mother-in-law (Kristin Scott Thomas), a master at manipulation, will use every situation to undermine her. As the battle of wits and underlying sparks fly, Larita with frustratingly calm counter attacks, is determined to hold onto her husband. As the battle of wills escalates, Larita realizes she has an ally, John’s Father (Colin Firth)! The skillful ensemble performances of the cast, along with lessons of family, tradition vs. progress, and living life, not just being a part of it, Easy Virtue is an insightful and wonderful film by writer/director Stephan Elliott. And yes, I do enjoy the mainstream, big budget movies. It’s the smaller films, like Easy Virtue, that are true gems…

Ed Helms: Takes a Day off From The Office to Get The Hangover

Stu ends up being one of the most likeable characters in The Hangover, as the quiet one becomes the life of the party and ends up experiencing Vegas in a way many dream about. Stu is just a character unfortunately, and Helms has never had a night in Vegas like that. “I went to college and had a few crazy weekends, nothing approaching what happens in the movie,” says the actor. “That is why the part was so fun to do, a lot of it is every guy’s fantasy to get into a tremendous amount of trouble and ultimately pay no consequences for it

Helms did make a few changes to the character though, “I hate … characters that complain through the whole movie. The shooting draft of

“Land of the Lost” Old sci-fi with a new twist!

By Randy Montgomery

In the new comedy The Hangover, Ed Helms plays Stu Price, a reserved dentist with an overbearing girlfriend. Being the “nerdy” one of the bunch of friends in the film didn’t bother the 35-year-old actor who you may recognize as Andy Bernard from the wildly popular television series The Office, or as a correspondent on The Daily Show, “I related to that character Stu. I’m kind of a reserved guy.”

and have everything end up perfectly fine 48 hours later. But life doesn’t work that way.” What is a perfect weekend in Vegas? “Winning seven million dollars at a blackjack table,” says Helms. Playing a role such as Stu may have acted out fantasies of running wild through Vegas, yet the real reward from working on The Hangover for Helms has been the reaction from audiences at preview screenings, “We put so much effort into making the film, and to hear people (at the screenings) reacting to it in they way they have. It’s really gratifying. We hope the larger public loves it too. So far it has been amazingly positive.”

The TV series Land of the Lost had two runs, 1974-1977, and again in 1991-1992. The theme of both centered on a modern family surviving after a vortex thrust them back to the prehistoric age. The concept was the creation of the famous Sid and Marty Krofft Television Productions’ company. In this big screen version, the victims of the vortex aren’t related. They’re Will Farrell (a down on his luck scientist), Anna Friel (his highly intelligent research assistant), and Danny McBride (a backwoods’ survivalist). They’re trapped in the world of dinosaurs and reptiles, with no weapons, few skills, and little knowledge on how to survive in the alternate universe. In their quest to find a way back, a primate (Jorma Taccone) is their only ally to find a way out of the prehistoric world! Starring Will Ferrell, Anna Friel, Danny McBride, Bobb’e J. Thompson, and Jorma Taccone. Directed by Brad Silberling; written by Chris Henchy & Dennis McNicholas; Universal Pictures release; Rated PG-13 for crude and sexual content, and for language including a drug reference; Runtime: 94 minutes.

There’s a new venue in town to see live concerts in Pure Digital Cinema 3D- at ULTRA STAR Cinemas in Surprise. We were treated to front row seats for the Eric Clapton& Steve Winwood Together Live concert series from Madison Square Garden recently. What an awesome show it was as we experienced the future of cinema today! With captains chair seats and sound to blow any average theatre to shame, Clapton and Winwood were live and bigger than life in a once in a lifetime concert featuring their repertoire of hit songs and stories. From their books as true rock star legends, these two treated us to some of the best rock and roll songs of all time! Remembering of course, they were two of the founding members of Blind Faith and have only reunited as friends in the last few years. What a lucky break for us to finally hear them live and up-close in a choice setting. Backed up by the likes of Ian Thomas on drums and Willie Weeks on Bass,

they charged through hit after hit leaving no doubt, we were in the “Presence of the Lord”. Weaving between the ClaptonWinwood play lists we were treated to “Cant Find My Way Home”, “Mr. Fantasy”, “Glad”, “After Midnight”, “Fine Line”, “The Blues”, “I’ve Got Rambling On My Mind”, “Georgia”, “Well Alright”, “Voodoo Child”, “Walking through the Clouds”, “No Face, No Name No Number”. And finally, an encore rendition of Clapton’s “Cocaine”. This was a concert for the ages that every true rock and roll fan should see and hear in pure digital cinema! Thanks to Ultra Star Cinemas for bringing the state of the art DLP Cinema technology to the valley and opening up a whole new way to experience the classics of rock! You may still be able to catch the ClaptonWinwood show live again on June 26th-but you’ll have to get in line at Jobing.com arena and find your seat…

Prado Restaurant Introduces New Talent, Seasonal Menu Prado Restaurant at InterContinental Montelucia Resort & Spa is proud to announce the addition of Pavle Milic as General Manager, the arrival of Paul Xanthopoulos as Maitre d’ and a new fresh, seasonal-inspired menu. Prado has hired Pavle Milic as the new General Manager. Milic is a well-known restaurateur who has worked in top restaurants throughout the Valley and has helped them reach new pinnacles of success. He has worked at Rancho Pinot, T. Cooks, and most recently as General Manager and maitre d’ at Digestif, all in Scottsdale. Milic, originally from Montenegro – the picturesque former Yugoslavian province – has also worked in dining destinations such as New York City, Napa Valley and Scottsdale, giving him worldly view of different dining styles and experiences. He is passionate about leading staff to be highly knowledgeable about cuisine & beverage and to always create a setting of extreme professionalism. “Restaurants are my passion and heart,” said Milic. “The opportunity to join a fantastic new resort and restaurant with such commitment to authenticity, food quality and the dining experience was deeply intriguing and something I simply had to take on.” Paul Xanthopoulos, born in Greece

to a shoe-maker, is a well-known and well-loved front-of-house restaurant expert, recently serving as Master du Soigner (master of looking after) at Estate House in Scottsdale, and before that nearly a decade as Director of Romance for the Royal Palms. Xanthopoulos, who is happy to share that he is a direct descendant of Eros, the mythical god of love, is passionate about the guest experience and is consulting on guest relations while serving as Maitre d’ of Prado. The team at Prado are thrilled to welcome Pavle Milic and Paul Xanthopoulos to the alreadyexceptional team. They have outstanding reputations in the market, and will add a certain savoir faire that will perfectly accent Montelucia and Prado’s European authenticity. The combined force of Executive Chef Francesco Roccato, Prado Chef de Cuisine Claudio Urciuoli and many other globally-trained chefs, plus Pavle and Paul in the front-ofthe-house creates a tremendously talented team to deliver excellence in Prado and for the many fantastic weddings and social events the resort hosts. Fresh Menu The updated Prado menu has been adjusted to include many seasonal and local items served either from the Plancha, Wood-Fired Grill or a selection of starters, rices and pastas and inspired side dishes. Items from the wood-fired grill include Hawaiian blue prawns, Controne beans, and

Another favorite remaining on the menu is the Caprese with burrata cheese with slow roasted tomatoes and olive bread ($12). “As always, the menu will focus on quality of ingredients and technique,” said Claudio Urciuoli, Chef de Cuisine of Prado. “As an active member of

the Slow Food movement, there are many seasonal items that we are incorporating into our dishes and using to create new menu items.” Through Chef Urciuoli’s commitment to the Slow Food movement and his local connections with farmers and suppliers, Prado features an authentic cooking method where the freshest seafood, meats, and produce are cooked on a grill over a wood burning fire. Traditional Mediterranean flavors with a Spanish accent are interpreted into a modern, fresh approach using only the finest ingredients, dressed simply to allow quality to shine through. Additionally, Milic and the Mbar team will be creating a new menu of craft cocktails using the bar’s extensive collection of more than 70 fine 100 percent agave tequilas, happy hour and reverse happy hour specials, live music including national acts such as Esteban and others, and much more. Dining Out with BenefitsSushi Roku Supports the Community with Dining Program How can you dine out and help someone at the same time? Why not choose a restaurant with award winning food and a cool, unique way to give back to the community. With the introduction of Sushi Roku’s “Dining Out with Benefits,” people now have a new and easy opportunity to help raise money for charity. Everyone wants to make a difference in the world, but sometimes we get so caught up in our own lives that we forget about the lives of others. Sushi Roku makes being philanthropic as simple as saying a few words. Yes that’s it, a few words. Every time customers dine at Sushi Roku and mention the featured charity of the month, 20% of the total bill will benefit that organization all summer long. AZ WeeklyMagazine.com

“We are serious about our commitment to the community and want to give back by supporting local charities,” says Lee Maen, co-owner of Sushi Roku. Starting in June, Sushi Roku will be donating 20% of a guest’s bill each month to a select charity when you mention that month’s charity to your server. Local Lunch Icon Expands Menu to Offer Breakfast

Duck and Decanter, a 36-year veteran of the Phoenix lunch scene, is now serving breakfast! Long recognized for its innovative sandwiches, “the Duck” (as it is affectionately referred to by Phoenix locals) has received over 40 awards and “best of” recognitions for its menu, products and services. Founder, Earl Mettler, notes that “it is now time to bring our same high level of commitment to quality product and service to the morning hours.” Beginning as it did with its lunch menu in 1972, the Duck is initially offering a select variety of items including breakfast sandwiches, egg burritos and pastries. Mettler recalls that “it was input from customers that in many ways helped us develop our lunch menu to its current range of imaginative and original offerings. We are counting on this creative partnership to continue as we rollout our new breakfast menu.” To celebrate its new breakfast menu,

the Duck is offering coffee freshly brewed from some of the world’s greatest coffee estates every Friday through Labor Day for only $1.59 per cup. Coffees featured on Fridays will be either Jamaican Blue Mountain from the Mavis Bank and Wallingford Estates ($75 per lb) or Hawaiian Kona Fancy ($60 per lb). All three locations are now opening at 7:00 am Monday through Friday while the East Camelback location is also open on weekends at 7:00 am. Duck and Decanter, as it is known today, began in November of 1972 under the new ownership of Dort and Earl Mettler and purveys fresh sandwiches, salads and soups in a unique environment surrounded by specialty foods, cheeses, wine, beer, coffee, tea, gift baskets, and giftware. By Nathan Mears

A few weeks ago I began to write to you about the wines of New Zealand. At that time it occurred to me that most of us are only familiar with the Sauvignon Blancs from this tiny island nation. So I decided to encourage you to gather some friends and have a party with a New Zealand wine theme. I promised I would do the same. This would be a fun way to remind myself what the Kiwi’s had to offer. Read on to find out how it went. With the back drop of a rare rainy day in the desert; we set out to explore the offerings of New Zealand wine. A very simple menu of grilled meats, tossed salad, ceviche and grilled corn were prepared to go with the five wines we’d chosen. The event began with a glass of Nautilus Sauvignon Blanc from Marlborough near the Northern tip of the South Island. It was bright and crisp with aromas of pink grapefruit and grass. The sauvignon blanc was a perfect compliment to the tossed green salad. I am not usually a fan of salad and wine, but it worked. Next we moved on to a slightly off dry, yet clean and crisp Riesling by Villa Maria also from Marlborough. The wine was very refreshing with bright lime flavors, ample acidity and a hint of sweetness. This was the favorite wine alongside the ceviche, though the Sauvignon Blanc came in a close second. As time went by the smell of the lamb chops, beef rib eye and herb rubbed chicken wafting from the grill drew our attention. First off the grill was the chicken. The crispy grilled chicken was an amazing partner to the Kumeu River Pinot Gris. Kumeu is near Auckland on the North Island. The pinot gris had a nose full of peaches and flowers with a rich almost creamy texture balanced by vibrant acidity. As we moved on to the red meats we began to explore the red wines. From the North Island, we chose the Craggy Range “Te Kahu”. Te Kahu is a big mouth filling merlot based blend from the “Gimblett Gravels Vineyard” in Hawke’s Bay. This full bodied red was right at home with the rich fatty

rib eye. Last but certainly not least we travel to one of the southernmost wine growing regions in the world, Central Otago. We chose the Amisfield Pinot Noir as our Central Otago representative. The Amisfield had a complex spicy nose. The palate continued the spice theme along with opulent fruit guarded by firm tannin and racy acidity. The richness of the New Zealand lamb chops was just what the doctor order to whip this wild pinot noir into submission. At this point my group was sated and ready for a nap thus bringing us to a close. If you haven’t already I hope you take a moment to explore New Zealand wines and enjoy all they have to offer as we did. Who’d have thought such great and varied wines could come from a couple of islands in the South Pacific?

Wine and Dine in Style In recent years, Wine has become an incredibly popular drink for parties. Here are some helpful hints while you are planning a party that includes wine - and what foods to serve with each type. Today there are many varieties of wines grown all over the world. It is a personal preference which type or producer of wine you select. Don’t let anyone convince you that more expensive wines are better. One can find great bargains everyday for under $10. With all the choices you have to pick today, it really comes down to three types of wine: Red, White and Sparkling. Each wine is great but some wines go better with different kinds of foods. Here’s some advice on what most people consider to be the “Rule” with wines and food. Just remember everybody’s tastes are different, so what tastes great to one person, might not be as good to another. It is best if you can experiment a little and find the wines you think are best. It is most often considered appropriate to serve Red Wines (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlots, etc…) with meats and game. Some

other wines to consider with meats are Syrah/Shiraz and Pinot Noirs. White wines usually are best with lighter foods including fish, foul, and vegetables dishes. These wines include Chardonnay, Riesling, Chenin Blanc, and other white wines. Each of these wines has different characteristics and each one can be complimentary to the food you are having or just drinking on its own. Some examples: Spicy foods – Shiraz or Red Zinfandel (fruity and bold) Red Meat – Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlots (full body wine) Pork and Game – Pinot Noir (lighter red) Shellfish – Riesling or Champagnes (Methode Champenoise) – (Light, dry wine) Ocean and Fresh water fish – Chardonnay’s and Semillons (heavier White) When in doubt, you can always go to an upper scale wine and spirits store and ask for a suggested wine for a type of food, or there is always the multitude of locations to look up on the Internet. Make it an even greater party with a great wine selection!

Hit The Scene In A Limousine!! Going out is fun. Make it, big fun. Afterall, you only live once. So do it up in style the next time you and your party posse hit the town. Just play it smart. Before you choose the right limo company for the evening, there are a few tips that may help: 1) Have you been referred to the limo company? You can also ask around to friends as “word of mouth” is also important in finding a reputable limo company. I have heard of many things going wrong such as the limo company not showing up or having bad customer service, so make sure to ask around. 2) How much is it going to cost? Make sure to ask the limo company on how much the day/evening services will be. There is usually a package rate for a certain amount of hours plus gratuity (tip). Make sure your party participants understand how much the limousine is up front so you can collect the money. Many times, you have to place a credit card down as well as a security deposit so make sure to have a responsible point person who will also ask up front for everyone’s money who is chipping in. 3) What type of party limo do you want? Make sure to find out what types of limos or party busses the company owns. You can get anything from a Cadillac or Hummer limousine to a large classic stretch limo. 4) What does the limo come with? Find out exactly what the limousine comes equipped with. Some of the common things are dvd, stereo, great sound system, lights, alcohol and other beverages. Find out what is included in the price?

18

5) Order the limousine early and re-confirm a few days before the party. Make sure to ask the limousine June 4th - June 10th, 2009

AZ WeeklyMagazine.com

company to confirm a few days prior to the party or call them direct. There are times when the limousine requested somehow disappears. Perhaps another party placed a winning bid. Be safe and re-confirm. 6) Ask about group rates. In today’s age of gas being more than food and a soft economy, ask the limousine company if they give party discounts. You may get lucky! 7) VIP passes. Find out if the limousine company has access/VIP to bars and clubs which will make it easier for you to get you and the bachelor party into the hot spots. 8) Plan your evening. Don’t have the limousine attendant driving aimlessly around town. Map out your evening party course in advance so you can have a rough estimate on where you are going. 9) Tip the driver. Make sure to have enough to tip the driver, as he is the one so graciously taking you and your crazy friends around for the evening on command. Ask the company in advance if they place gratuity into the price or if you pay separate. Just make sure to be generous with the tip! 10) Bring Drinks and Snacks. The best party limo rides have your favorite munchies and drinks. If you don’t bring the food and drink with you, stop off at a near-by store and load up! The limousine company may already have loaded up the limousine which you can ask about when calling and setting up the party festivities. Just make sure to have a great time and treat the limousine as if it were your own. Party like rock stars – without the damage of course. And most importantly, never drink and drive. This is a key reason your very own limousine experience will be such an enjoyable one.

This year the AIA/LA accepted award submissions from US-based firms or venues and international entries, so I was a little disappointed to find that not one finalist from our great state made the cut. In that same vein we decided to compile a list of the Night Owl’s Favorite Designed Places. Selections for this will be based on qualities like design, of course, ambience and that something special that truly sets apart that particular restaurants, cafe, and bar. Cenpho.tv: Arizona has a lot to offer in arts, food, culture and places, anyone who tells you it doesn’t have not truly seen the best of our state. So as a fellow voice of Arizona, I can appreciate others working towards bringing awareness about our region. Needless to say, when I heard about Cenpho.tv, “a weekly video about central phoenix living” I quickly began to tune in and catch up. Cenpho.tv offers an organic grass roots approach to discovering the best of Central Phoenix. It’s a straightforward guide on everything Central Phoenix from coffee shops, to plays and shows, galleries, and the latest “counter culture” events. Dave and Jacqui, the show’s personalities, discover and share events, news, and happenings that would otherwise go unmentioned in the mainstream buzz about Phoenix. Tune in to Cenpho.tv if you’re down to try something new, or eager to discover what’s in your own back yard. For your weekly dose of Central Phoenix visit, www.cenpho.tv or follow them on Twitter @ cenphotv.

Butterscotch Swag: We all love First Friday, right? Well, the next one is coming up on June 5th, and I have something for you to seek out. After Hours Gallery will be debuting “Butterscotch Swag” featuring the art of Al “Isse Fresh” Tramel. According to Mike Oleskow from After Hours Gallery, “Al’s paintings are a striking blend of urbanoriented commentary pieces and surprising sweet portraits with gritty overtones. The pieces are bold and memorable and sure to make this show the talk of June’s First Friday.” I checked the art out and it looks pretty sweet so I’m going to swing on over and check out the debut. You going? If so, let me know. For more information on First Friday visit artlinkphoenix. com and for more info on After Hours Gallery visit afterhoursgallery.com. Danny Z Celebrates 35 Years: Quick shoutout and congratulations to Live Nation’s Danny Zelisko, who is celebrating 35 year’s of bringing the world’s best music to Phoenix and all of Arizona. Zelisko booked his first Arizona show on June 2, 1974, when he brought Mahavishnu Orchestra to Tucson. Today he is Live Nation’s Southwest Chairman. So who is he again? Basically, all you need to know is that he made Phoenix a music stop for the world’s best musicians and is behind virtually all of the major shows in Phoenix. If you are going to see Clapton, Beyonce or the Jonas Brothers or saw Dave Matthews, Dane Cook or Jimmy Buffett he was the man behind it. He also hosts The Regular Guy Radio Hour on 93.3 KDKB each Sunday at 10:00 p.m. (it used to be 9:00 p.m., but it moved time slots so take note). Hangin’ at the W: What’s hotter than a W Hotel anywhere? Not much, and the W Scottsdale ranks up there with the hottest of the hottest. With the weather being hot too, they have implemented two cool weekly happenings. Their “Sunset Sessions” which are hosted poolside each Sunday feature some of Scottsdale’s hottest people along with music and entertainment. On Thursdays they host “ACQUA,” another poolside party that features lots of drinks, sweet DJ beats and more of Scottsdale’s sexiest. The musical performance for the “Sunset Sessions” starts at, well, sunset, and ACQUA kicks off at 7:00 p.m. As these parties are hosted on Thursday’s and Sundays, there is a chill, relaxed vibe. At Mesa’s National Comedy Theatre’s comedy show, you might think your eyes are playing tricks on you, particularly if you catch the Rawlins brothers performing. Often the audience finds themselves laughing with Matthew Rawlins, a hilarious young comedian, only to double take when he is joined on stage by his doppelganger, twin brother Anthony. Because the show is competitive, the twins often face off

Ode to Arizona The Devil wanted a place on earth. Sort of a summer home: A place to spend his vacation Whenever he wanted to roam. So he picked out Arizona. A place both wretched and rough. Here the climate was to his liking And the cowboys were hardened and tough. He dried up the streams in the canyons and ordered no rain to fall: He dried up the lakes in the valleys, Then baked and scorched it all. Then over his barren desert He transplanted shrubs from Hell. The cactus, thistle and prickly pear -The climate suited them well. Now, the home was much to his liking. But animal life, he had none: So he created crawling creatures That all mankind would shun.

First he made the rattlesnake. With its forked poisonous tongue: Taught it to strike and rattle And how to swallow its young. Then he made Scorpions and Lizards And the ugly old Horned Toad. He placed spiders of every description Under rocks by the side of the road. Then he ordered the sun to shine hotter. Hotter and hotter still. Until even the cactus wilted And the old Horned Toad looked ill. Then he gazed on his earthly kingdom. As any creator would: He chuckled a little up his sleeve And admitted that it was good. ‘Twas summer now and Satan lay By a prickly pear to rest. The sweat rolled off his wearthy brow. So he took off his coat and vest. “By Golly,” he finally panted “I did my job too well. I’m going back where I came from Arizona is hotter than Hell!”

He did not play in 2006 because of his father’s death. Last year, he was recovering from the first of two knee operations that ultimately caused him to miss the second half of the season. Golf enthusiasts around the globe will be keeping a close eye on this one. The Memorial will be played June 4-7. Kenny Perry is the defending champion.

Tiger Woods to Return to Memorial Tiger Woods is returning to the Memorial, where he is a three-time winner. He decided not to compete in the tournament two of the last three years due to family matters and knee surgery. Key interest point…. Tiger has not yet won at Muirfield Village, where legendary Jack Nicklaus is the tournament host, since winning his third in a row at 2001. Something the fierce competitor will certainly have in mind when his tee time arrives.

Muirfield Village Golf Club was the dream and work of Jack Nicklaus. The land was acquired in 1966, but construction did not begin until July 28, 1972. The golf course is situated on 220 acres, which includes an 11acre driving range. The course was officially dedicated on Memorial Day, May 27, 1974, with an exhibition match between Nicklaus and Tom Weiskopf. Nicklaus scored a sixunder par 66, which stood as the course record until 1979.

slugger Manny Ramirez, which has many wondering exactly what the team dynamics will be when the controversial yet charismatic superstar makes his return to Dodger Blue. Although never a dull moment in Manny-land, there are much more important questions at hand. Who will lose playing time when he returns? Will the young line-up of promising hitters continue to thrive as they have in his absence? Currently, the Dodgers have a cozy 8 game lead with June just around the corner. It also appears fans are still plenty eager to justify Manny’s position on this year’s All-Star squad, despite any talk whatsoever of performance-enhancing drugs. Several baseball purists, experts, analysts and mathematical guru’s alike feel Ramirez should be quick to respectfully decline an All-Star selection honor if voted onto the team. Sure, baseball fans have the right to vote him onto the squad, however playing baseball for the Dodgers, getting back to business letting his skills speak for themselves, far outweighs any need for more media spotlight, the circus frenzy

known as “Manny being Manny.” In short, should he help the Dodgers reach the World Series this season, all will be well in Manny-world. However, baseball is baseball. It’s a beautiful game and should be played with honor, integrity, and of course, a great big smile. The game is fun – and players like Manny do indeed put a smile on plenty of fans’ faces. The drama however should remain in Hollywood. In LA the focus need be on base hits, homeruns and solid team play. No need for any further distractions. Dodger dogs, Dodger blue and good old-fashioned baseball. Hit, throw, run. It’s a beautiful concept when you stop and think about it.

How do I clean my pool cue shaft? There are many products on the market for cleaning your shaft that range from kitchen scrubbing pads to liquids. I don’t personally like liquids because wood is porous and the liquids will leave a buildup over time that makes it harder to remove dents. I have two favorites that I’ve used for many years that simply do the best job for the least money. My #2 favorite is the Q-Wiz. It is a round pad with floating latex crystals on one side and leather on the other. The crystals take off virtually NO wood from the shaft. They actually break down leaving a white residue that resembles wood dust. After cleaning the shaft with the crystal side you simply burnish the shaft with the leather side to smooth and seal the wood. My #1 favorite product is Cue Papers. convenience can clean a shaft like nothing I have ever seen. These are unbelievable! As with the Q-wiz, Cue Papers only remove dirt, not the wood. Both products are also washable and reusable countless times. For $7-$10, you just can’t do any better, period. Until next time, remember, the only thing consistent about a pool player in inconsistency. Keep practicing. Robert Mallen G Cue Billiard Store

Putt Like a Pro That beautiful tee shot and perfect approach to the green doesn’t count for much without some confidence behind you and your putter. Add these tips to your arsenal and see just how quickly you and your putter become a force to be reckoned with. o

o

Keep your hands soft and constant throughout your stroke. Less is more, and sensitivity is a crucial part of putting. Tight hands mean decreased sensitivity – period. Also make sure your grip pressure doesn’t change thru the stroke. One soft, fluid motion on a steady line will work wonders on the greens. Arm your bag with a putter equipped with a very distinct line mark to help attack the target line. Purchase a chalk line at any hardware store. This perfect training aid will allow you to see and feel the entire length

of the line to the cup. Once your eyes get in rythym with the target you’ll be draining ten and fifteen footers in no time. o

The hands never work alone in golf. Make absolutely sure your hands are not moving independently, but in one smooth motion with both your arms and shoulders. On the practice greens, keep a close eye on your hands instead of the ball. If they’re doing all the work, step back, re-think the shot, and implement your arms and shoulders to help direct the ball. Afterall, championships are won on the greens. The term “Drive for Show - Putt for Dough” is very real indeed.

Remember, turning these fundamental concepts into habits will bring a whole new world of wonder into this beautiful game we call Golf!

“So what exactly is Fear?” The Law of Distraction and InterruptionTM states ·

Life’s Distractions, if you allow them, will keep you from achieving your goals and dreams. Interruptions either slow you down or completely stop you from what you set out to accomplish.

Fear can be defined as an emotional response to the perception of possible impending danger or of the unknown. Fear is a survival mechanism and it generally is a response to negative stimulus. If we were happy with a situation, there would be no cause for Fear, we would accept the positive stimulus. Do you sometimes feel uncomfortable when in a social arena with many people? Is it the large number of people surrounding you

that triggers anxiety? Is it that you don’t know what behavior is expected of you? It has been said that love is the strongest emotion. I feel fear is stronger. Fear is our strongest emotion. Fear will control our lives if we allow it. Fear will stop you from being successful. Fear will not allow you to be happy. Fear will not allow you to live a productive life. Don’t be distracted by fear or let fear interrupt your life’s goals. Try to understand and face your fears. It’s your life, and you want to live it to the fullest. identity theft up 22%, hits 5-year high

Leader in I.D. Theft Protection Strikes Back with Protection Offer for All A stunning new survey shows a record 9.9 million Americans were victims of identity theft last year – a shocking 22% increase over the prior year – according to Javelin Strategy & Research. This news mirrors a just-released report from the Federal Trade Commission that cites a 21% increase in identity theft complaints during the same period*. These studies send a clear message: in the wake of the global economic crisis, identity theft is a big business. That’s why LifeLock, the industry leader in identity theft protection, is offering consumers who have a good faith suspicion that they have been a victim, or are about to become a victim of identity theft, a discount on their identity theft protection service. “To take advantage of this special offer, all you have to do is call 1-877-509-1588 and use promo code AZWEEKLY,” said Todd Davis, CEO of LifeLock. “It’s that simple.” Why would you want to protect your identity? Consider some of the Javelin survey’s specific findings: “friendly frauds” are rising, and Costlier. According to the survey, more than one in every ten victims knew the person who stole their identity. Worse yet, these “friendly frauds” went undetected longer and cost consumers who knew the per-

petrator more than double the expenses experienced by victims who didn’t know their identity thief. It also appears identity thieves are moving faster than they used to when it comes to using stolen information. The Javelin survey revealed that incidents of thieves using stolen information within just a week of the theft more than doubled from 33% to 71% over the past three years. “That’s why I feel it’s so important for everyone who needs it to have protection available to them, and why I hope everyone will take advantage of this special discount,” Davis added. how does LifeLock Work? It’s important to point out that no one can stop all identity theft. “But if you have a good faith suspicion that you are at risk of identity theft, what we can do is work to reduce the risk of identity thieves being able to cause LifeLock members harm, even if their information falls into the wrong hands,” Davis said. “It’s a service we back with our $1 Million Total Service Guarantee.” (Restrictions apply. See lifelock.com for details.) LifeLock combines a proactive approach designed to help detect and avoid identity theft, with 24/7 customer care that works to remove the stress and countless hours of trying to repair the damage that usually accompanies identity theft.

$1 miLLion totaL serviCe guarantee If you become a victim of identity theft while a member of LifeLock due to a failure in our service, we will spend up to $1 million to cover the cost for lawyers, investigators, case managers but not any direct losses as a result of the theft. Our $1 Million Total Service Guarantee does not cover: lost wages or business profits, loss of business or lost opportunities and direct out-of-pocket

As such, she has dedicated herself to publishing works by authors between the ages of 13 and 18. Other than the fact that they do not receive an advance (payment is in royalties), authors who publish with Youthful Wisdom Press will enjoy a traditional publishing experience— from acceptance to first pass pages to promotion tours (albeit virtual).

The focus of creating this website was to have it serve as a resource guide and directory that gives consumers current information about Phoenix, from a number of resources all in ONE website,” states Jodie Wilson, the creator of www.discovertheregion. com. She adds, “The site offers current local and global news, weather, attractions, mapping, classifieds, and professional blogging all in one location. The Audi Q-7 is based on the VW Touareg and Porsche Cayenne platform. The difference here is the Audi has an all-wheel drive system for street pavement only, while the other two are offered with off-road drivelines for rugged desert trails. In spite of this, I took my Q-7 for some mild off-road fun, but the low ground clearance doesn’t work well when driving around large rocks and traction was limited on loose gravel. This is a street machine.

is excellent for an SUV with sporty steering and brake feedback. The ride was firm due to the big 21-inch wheels, but not uncomfortable. The interior has great materials and workmanship. I had the V-6 engine that starts at about $43,000. With bigger wheels, leather and navigation, mine hit about $58,225. Last year, I had the bigger V-8 engine and air suspension that stickered $70 thousand! Yes, it’s nice, but i didn’t say it was cheap.

Green Day – 21st Century Breakdown CD Review By Stephen Wilkinson Two things lend instant validity to this release. First, the band refused to issue a “clean” version of this to Walmart for retail sale. Second, producer Butch Vig is on board. Having produced mostly independent/ underground albums since 1982 and known for his work with Garbage, he seems a good choice to be working with the band on their first effort since 2004’s American Idiot. But, Green Day’s roots are/were punk, and since signing to a major label, while the fanbase has grown considerably, they’ve surely left numerous original followers behind by “selling out”. The first single “Know Your Enemy” sounds like Green Day of the last 15 years. Consistent three chord fast tempo numbers along with more instrumentation find its way into the songs. The album is split into three parts titled as acts, more or less

emphasizing the fact that this is a concept album yet it still sounds like Green Day of the last several albums, so if you’ve been into them since ‘Dookie’, this album compliments the current trend of their catalogue.
