An Engaging, Interactive Experience for All Ages, America’s Largest Butterfly Pavilion Brings Rainforest Wonders to the Arizona Desert Butterfly Wonderland, Scottsdale’s new destination attraction and the largest butterfly pavilion in America, “emerged” on May 25, 2013. Spanning a 5-acre parcel of land, this state-of-the art new facility located on the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community, entertains, enchants and educates visitors of all ages on the wonders of one of Mother Nature’s most beloved creatures. It features a magnificent glass atrium that brings a tropical rainforest environment to the Arizona desert, as well as educational laboratories and interactive exhibits, a 3D movie theater, gift shop, and a café-style dining area. Butterfly Wonderland is the first phase of a planned “Odysea in the Desert,” 522,000 sq. ft. entertainment complex that will eventually include the largest aquarium in the southwest, an IMAX theatre and a Ripley’s Believe It Or Not Museum. In an era in which children and adults alike increasingly turn to the virtual world for entertainment and education, Butterfly Wonderland provides an opportunity to reconnect with the natural world and learn about its splendors in a tangible and engaging way. The

self-guided tour begins with a 3D theater experience, followed by a Chrysalis Lab. Visitors then are welcomed into a magnificent, lush, rainforest atrium where thousands of butterflies from around the world fly freely, alighting on fragrant flowering plants – from sweet almond verbena to plumeria, and, quite possibly, on a friendly visitor’s shoulder or finger. From the atrium, visitors continue on to several interactive exhibits about other natural wonders, from honey bees to aquatic life. The interactive nature of the exhibits means that no two visits will be the same. “Our facility is more than a museum; it is a living, sensory experience,” said Curator, Dayna Cooper. “The Scottsdale setting is a dramatic choice, as it juxtaposes two distinct eco-systems, allowing visitors to step from the arid Arizona desert directly into a tropical rainforest environment.” The Butterfly Wonderland facility includes:

edited version of the 3-D feature film, the “Flight of the Butterflies,” that introduces visitors to the fascinating life of butterflies. Butterfly Emergence Gallery After leaving the theater, guests move into the chrysalis viewing area, where they observe the most dynamic stage of a butterfly metamorphosis. Rivers of the Amazon Large freshwater aquariums houses creatures from the Amazon and other habitats. Through 10-foot picture windows, guests can view exotic fish and touch tanks include stingrays and eels. Live Ant Colony An engaging live ant colony encompass’ distinct habitats which allow guests to follow the ants to different environments. Acrylic cases allow 360-degree viewing. Honey Bee Extravaganza This intricate exhibit features a series of beehives, protected by glass, that allow each visitor an unimpeded view as the bees produce honey and go about their daily activities. Butterfly Treasures This appealing gift shop is stocked with memorable keepsakes ranging from books and videos, to an assortment of tee shirts, butterfly art and rainforest merchandise.

The Conservatory This dramatic, glass-enclosed atrium is home to thousands of butterflies from the far reaches of the world in a carefully controlled rainforest environment that is meticulously maintained by Curator Dayna Cooper. The Conservatory creates opportunities for visitors and butterflies to interact. More than a traditional viewing facility, the Conservatory is lush and tropical with waterfalls and colorful plants and trees. A large Koi pond also houses colorful species of fish.

Multi-Purpose Room Available for birthday parties, private events, and small receptions, this space can accommodate up to 15 people. Café Visitors continue to be engaged throughout their dining experience through viewing monitors presenting information about butterflies and a stunning art exhibit.

Location The Butterfly Wonderland is located on the NE corner of the 101 Freeway and Via de Ventura 3D Theater in Scottsdale, Arizona, within the With stadium seating for 196, this Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian is the setting for the specially Community. There is a Native AZWeeklyMagazine.com

American saying: If you whisper a wish, the butterfly will carry it to heaven and your wish will come true. It is a particular point of pride, then, for the location of the Butterfly Wonderland within the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community, where reverence for the natural world is so integral to the culture.

REVIEWERS ROUNDTABLE The following are reactions from each of AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s film commentators in an effort to generate a well-rounded overview of this weekend’s new releases.

About the Film

intriguing as the story unfolds, but unfortunately it takes a familiar path. Writer, producer and actor Brit Marling turns in a well-acted performance, although her character’s actions are not always believable. While you may empathize for The East’s intentions, you may not agree with their methods.

‘The East’ Brit Marling plays an operative for an elite private intelligence firm who finds her priorities irrevocably changed after she is tasked with infiltrating an anarchist group known for executing covert attacks upon major corporations. (PG-13 - 116 minutes) Stan: Co-written and directed by Zal Batmanglij, ‘The East’ with its understated deliberate pacing, reminds us of the power of the corporate sector and its underlying driving force that affect’s our daily lives. As always, the ‘evil empire’ theme with the power of those to protect the status quo, and the fervor of those who strive to expose the extent and often misuse, is a reminder that the protecting of corporate ‘secrets’ is just as tantamount to those operatives relative to government ‘secrets’. Randy: An eye for an eye. An interesting concept to watch unfold as an anarchist group targets major corporations that have injured others and/or caused environmental damage. The mystery is

Joseph: “The East” is the kind of movie that not only entertains you but also makes you think - and not just about the story, which is told with terrific intelligence, but also its very real implications. You will, without a doubt, believe that the system is indeed broken after having seen writer/director Zal Batmanglij’s drama, which was co-written by star Brit Marling. How to go about fixing it, though, is the pinnacle problem as the motion picture proves that it is an exceptionally complex issue. Save for some mid-movie meandering, you are certain to be breathless from beginning to end.

‘Stuck in Love’ An acclaimed writer (Greg Kinnear), his ex-wife (Jennifer Connelly) and their teenaged children (Lily Collins and Logan Lerman) come to terms with the complexities of love in all its forms over the course of one tumultuous year. (R 95 minutes) Joseph: “Stuck in Love” is a pleasant-yet-predictable motion picture. That is to say that the new dramedy’s upbeat attitude makes the viewer feel somewhat warm and fuzzy inside but it all just seems a little too wellplanned to be believable. Anyone who has ever seen a film about a dysfunctional family knows the route that writer/director Josh Boone will take each plot point. Moreover, some of its characters are an extremely unlikeable and almost all of them are at least a little pretentious (this is a family of writers, after all). It is still sweet enough to warrant a watch, though.

The following quotes were pulled from interviews conducted by AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s film columnists with talent speaking on behalf of movies recently released in theaters.

Writer/Director Zal Batmanglij (‘The East’) By Stan Robinson “You’re always doing a little bit of both, the project is finding you and you are finding it, that’s the happy dance. ‘The East’ was inspired by the summer that my writing partner Brit (Marling) and I spent traveling around America trying to find the underworld of America, the people who were living life differently, who were living ‘off the grid’. We couldn’t shake that experience so we de-

cided to write a movie about it. “We grew up with stories of ‘The Weathermen’ and ‘SDS’, and that was in our cultural fabric, and I never understood how that would play a role in our generation and now I think we need it more ever, is some form of the questioning authority. I’ve been on this college tour and from airport to airport, and everybody does exactly

what he or she is told. No one questions it; everybody goes into the full body x-ray machine. Brit and I always opt out and the guy said to us the other day, ‘Do you guys travel a lot’, we answered every day. He said that’s good that you don’t do it; we don’t let the pilots do it either. I’m thinking to myself, what, they don’t let pregnant women or pilots go into that machine, and yet everybody else goes in with out questioning it. “The East’ is about a conservative religious young woman who’s very ambitious and she wins the job ofinfiltrating an ‘anarchist collective’. So this

conservative woman remakes herself as a traveler. When she gets there, she’s faced with morally grey soup that we’re all wading through these days and the s@#t hits the fan! A very good factor for the film is that we always retain our audience after viewing ‘The East’ because people are really interested in these issues and they want to talk about them. Its not a question of whether or not the loved or hated the movie, it’s a question of the fact that they don’t get the chance to talk about a lot of the issues the film raises and they want to be part of that conversation.” – Zal Batmanglij

SOUNDBITE SPOTLIGHT

Writer/Actress Brit Marling (‘The East’) By Stan Robinson “As a writer and you’ve created the character, when you play the part of the character after you’ve written it, sometimes there’s this moment of ‘Oh wow, can I really pull this person off’, can I really inhabit this person fully, and believe it fully, and make other people believe. I certainly had that with the character of Sara. I think I felt a bit intimidated by her! We (the character) don’t have a lot in common, I’m kind of light hearted and loose, I like to laugh. The character of Sara is driven, and smitten by this occupation of hers, she’s a very physical person, she’s ex-FBI so she has a kind of physicality and this inner strength that’s different that how I operate in the world so it was very exciting with the training, the martial arts, stunts, and getting into a place where I could see the world from her perspective. “In this film, the question is really about ‘deep cover’. If you go into deep cover, that’s a very radical job to do, you’re taking on a character, you’re taking on a fake name, you’re dressing differently, learning a different language, and trying to convince a group of people who may be very dangerous that you are this other person, and the threat of being found out is so great. Its like acting with the highest stakes of all time! You could be in deep cover for six months or more, and be lost in this world trying to infiltrate, and how do you hold onto your sense of self, and how do you not be moved by the new norms that exist in the ‘other world’. “It was a very challenging role indeed, presenting two characters within the film who are totally different from each other, and the dichotomy of the influences by the circumstances of the people around the undercover character and the pushing, prodding, and pressure from her handler on the outside!” – Brit Marling AZWeeklyMagazine.com

HORSIN AROUND

By Brian Mulligan

The band Queen’s chant of ‘Another One Bites The Dust’ was the overall theme Saturday for online sports betting site players after yet another horse won the a classic race in the Belmont Stakes and another year flies by without a Triple Crown winner. The Belmont Stakes favorite Orb was second to last early and was just left with too much work to do late as he finished third beaten 5 lengths. Palace Malice, who was equipped with blinkers for the Kentucky Derby and totally changed the complexion of the race, relaxed this time for rider Mike Smith sitting about 3 lengths off the lead, opening up 2 lengths at the top of the lane and drawing off to win by 3 and a quarter lengths. Preakness winner Oxbow proved he is the real deal by completing the exacta. As for the winners of all three legs of the Triple Crown, the adage ‘pace makes the race’ was never more evident. Orb benefited by a ridiculous pace in the Derby. The half-mile time of the Derby of :45.33 was the second fastest in history and the three-quarter split of 1:09.80 was the fourth fastest ever. The horse that was closest to the pace and still ran great in the Derby was Oxbow and he proved he was the real deal winning in Baltimore 2 weeks later and running huge last weekend. Oxbow, ridden by Gary Stevens who played George ‘Iceman’ Woolf in the movie Seabiscuit, sat chilly in the Preakness and it would have made the man he played in the movie smile. Noboby else wanted the lead and Stevens lulled them to sleep on the front end. He went :23.94 in the opening quarter, got the half leading by 2 lengths and the half time was :48.60 and at the top of the lane, Stevens had already asked for and

got separation opening up 3 lengths - The rest was anti-climactic. In the Belmont Stakes, Frac Daddy was committed to the lead after he drew the rail and Oxbow went right with him head-to-head. They went the first quarter in :23.11 and the half mile in :46.66, the second fastest Belmont Stakes half-mile of all time. To further put that half-mile into perspective - know that the fastest half of the Belmont was set by the immortal Secretariat on way to his 31-length victory in 1973. When the pace is analyzed for Oxbow to finish second is nothing short of amazing. The other 2 horses that were vying for the lead finished last and second to last. Palace Malice, trained by Todd Pletcher, rated without blinkers in the Belmont and raced strong through the lane. Considering Palace Malice sizzled in the Derby, he still finished less than 4 lengths from the eventual Preakness hero - Far from disgraced in the Belmont debut when he was getting to the winner. Training up to the Belmont, his trainer pulled no punches and told everybody within his sights that Palace Malice was going to run huge. He drilled on May 27th without the blinkers and his trainer was impressed about the work, Pletcher: “he worked unbelievably well.. a monstrous gallop-out, as good as you’ll ever see a horse gallop out”. Some trainers always just say their horses are doing well – but it’s part of the game, but we leaned here that Pletcher is a pretty straight shooter. Palace Malice earned a 98 Beyer Speed Figure for his Belmont win - and that stands up pretty solidly since last year’s Belmont winner Union Rags earned a 96 figure. In a perfect world, Orb, Oxbow and Palace Malice would meet in the August 24 Travers at Saratoga but a new shooter there could upset the apple cart. His name is Normandy Invasion. You heard it here first. ARTS! SECTION 18

Say Bonjour to French Culture with “Experience France” at MIM July 13, 14

Second Annual Event Honors French Music, Food and Traditions The Musical Instrument Museum (MIM) in Phoenix invites the community to learn about and enjoy French music and culture without leaving the Valley at “Experience France.” After the success of MIM’s Bastille Day celebration in 2012, the museum is expanding the event to two days in 2013. On July 13 and 14, MIM will feature music, activities and a menu that will capture the spirit of France and entertain audiences of all ages. “Experience France” is the latest installment in MIM’s “Unity Through Diversity” partnership with Phoenix-based PetSmart®. The initiative brings the largest specialty pet retailer and the world’s first global musical instrument museum together to highlight musical traditions that celebrate cultural diversities, while reinforcing the museum’s overriding message that music is the language of the soul. “Experience France” is also supported by Alliance Française of Greater Phoenix. MIM spotlights the music of France with live performances on both days. Phoenix-based French singer-songwriter Cécile Hortensia couples bilingual poetry with intriguing melodies to deliver a performance that seamlessly integrates her French and American heritages. While visiting MIM, she will perform songs made famous by Edith Piaf, to honor the 50th anniversary of the iconic French singer’s passing.

ZAZU, an Arizona band carrying on the tradition of guitarist Django Reinhart, will perform infectious gypsy-jazz tunes that challenge the limitations of traditional improvisation. Additionally, Dr. James Gerber, music associate for All Saints’ Episcopal Church in Phoenix, will re-create French masterpieces that span the 16th to 20th centuries on MIM’s Rathke “visible” organ. All performances are free with museum admission. Hands-on activities are a large part of the “Experience France”

event. First, guests will be able to make a red, white and blue paper rosette to show their French spirit. This tricolor badge became a popular symbol of the French Revolution after the storming of the Bastille fortress in Paris in 1789. Guests are also invited to stop by MIM’s “Try It!” station and have their face painted with a custom design. These activities are free with museum admission. Each day, MIM’s Europe curator, Dr. Kathleen Wiens, will lead guests through the France exhibit and showcase selected French highlights of the Mechanical Music Gallery. Guests will learn about the music, history and instruments of France, including some fascinating automatons. The guided tour is free with museum admission and will take place at 2:15 p.m. both days.

Guests will have the opportunity to learn some French marching drum rhythms in a special installment of MIM’s monthly “Get the Beat! World Drumming Series.” This fun, family-friendly session takes place on Saturday at 12:30 p.m. and will highlight French drumming traditions and provide plenty of time for making music. The class is not included in general museum admission and the fee is $12 per person. Advanced registration is recommended. To register, contact grouptours@MIM. org. The Musical Instrument Museum is located at 4725 E. Mayo Boulevard in Phoenix (corner of Tatum and Mayo Boulevards, just south of Loop 101). For general museum information and a full schedule of events, visit MIM.org or call 480.478.6000.

THE UPCOMING SHAKEOUT The first thing to know about that upcoming shakeout is that it isn’t coming. Not in the way many people predict. Not in the way the craft beer bubble burst in the 1990’s. That’s not to say that we won’t see changes and that breweries will not either fail,

June 12th, 2013 - June 18th, 2013

or need to drastically pull back in order to survive. But a true shakeout, probably not. The late 80’s and early 90’s were a magical time for craft beer. Homebrewers across the country had put together business plans,

or not as the case may be, and opened breweries everywhere. Brewpubs were in every town, shelves started to fill with all sorts of different looking and tasting beers. Everything seemed fine, and then all of a sudden, these breweries started to close. They

AZWeeklyMagazine.com

had not built sustainable models that could support competition in the market place. Each of these breweries opened with the impression that they were going to be the only one. They weren’t. Continued On Page 40

This lack of vision, coupled with a much smaller craft consumer base, led to hard times for many of these startup operations. In the early 90’s, consumers were not demanding great beer. People that wanted bigger flavors were still drinking wine almost exclusively and the relative handful of craft drinkers could not support all of the brands hitting the market. Quality was not the issue, having enough customers to buy all of the beer produced was the issue. Many great little breweries went out of business because they had no plan for a competitive landscape, no thought about how to survive in lean times. Many of these folks were not true business people and as soon as times got a little tougher their lack of business skills showed. How about the breweries that did survive? What made them stand out? The majority of breweries that stayed alive through the shakeout of the 90’s were set up in areas that eventually developed

into great beer communities and are still thought of today in that way. Boulder, Portland, Seattle, Northern California all developed great beer cultures during this time. One of the big things they had in common was a bit of a counter-culture mentality. They all had a reputation for being a little different. Consequently, something different, like craft beer, was able to take hold and thrive. For quite some time these communities prided themselves on the differences that set them apart from the rest of the country. Breweries that survived in other cities were somehow able to capture the imagination of enough of the locals that they built a strong enough following to see them through the lean times. Fast forward to 2013. What is different today? A few things. Most importantly, money is tougher to come by. Gaining investment capital in sufficient Continued On Page 41

So who doesn’t survive? I get asked frequently what to look for in a brewery that wants to distribute their beers in new markets. My first question is always the same…Why here and why now? Put simply, why does this brewery have enough beer to open new markets? In many cases it is a planned expansion, but others have more beer then they can sell in their existing territories

because people aren’t buying it. In this current craft beer boom, if you can’t sell enough beer in your home market, then you are probably doing something wrong. These are the types of breweries that won’t survive. The ones that thought being a craft brewer was just about making beer and throwing it out there and expecting it to sell. The ones that do not support their brand with manpower and marketing resources. The ones that cater to every fickle whim of accounts and consumers without a real plan, sending specialty kegs everywhere without supporting those that buy the core products. These are the breweries that we will lose in the next few years. Shakeout? Not really, more of a natural selection process where the strong survive and the rest hope to recover their remaining debt by selling their equipment. Craft beer is here to stay and will continue to grow, but it will not continue to sustain brewers that cannot or will not plan.

quantities to build a brewery is much more difficult and the banks are winnowing out many of those who would not be successful. Also, many of these nouveau brewers are going in with their eyes wider open than in the past. They are aware of the pains of opening any kind of new business and are making plans accordingly. Finally, the craft community is much larger and whereas beers like Fat Tire were once considered exotic, they are a mainstay of many bars that 10 years ago would offer only domestic lagers and import brands. Given the opportunity to reach so many more people than just the beer geeks allows breweries to shine.

If you were to look in our ice chests this summer, these are the beers you’d find. We’ve handpicked three of our favorites for the season, plus for the first time in bottles, a special limited release originally crafted on our five-barrel pilot system. Typically available only in our Ft. Collins taproom, our pilot brews are experimental, hard to replicate and about as short-lived as a Colorado summer.

BY GEORGE DICKIE A quarter century from now, we may look back at the 2010s as the decade of the catcher. True, there are no Johnny Benches, Gary Carters or Carlton Fisks in this decade, Hall of Famers who dominated the position in the 1970s and ’80s. But with a proliferation of triple-threat receivers who can win games with their bats, gloves, arms, smarts and even legs – among them Buster Posey, Matt Wieters, Carlos Ruiz, Joe Mauer and Yadier Molina – it’s possible that the days of the good-field-no-hit catcher are over. Molina is a particularly interesting case. The 30-year-old native of Bayamon, Puerto Rico, was always considered one of the game’s best defensive catchers, boasting a 44 percent career rate for throwing out opposing base stealers to go with 47 pickoffs since his rookie year of 2004. And his leadership of a sterling Cardinals pitching staff is unquestioned. But it is his hitting that has progressed from acceptable to competent to middle-of-the-order threat. He put up his best offensive numbers a year ago, when he batted .315 with 22 home runs, 76 RBIs, a .373 on-base percentage, an OPS (on-base plus slugging percentage) of .874 and 12 stolen bases. As the No. 5 hitter on a very good hitting Cardinals team this year, at this writing he was hitting .327 with two home runs, 20 RBIs, a .366 on-base percentage, a .798 OPS and three steals. Molina and the Cardinals can be seen in action Sunday, June 9, on ESPN, when the Cards conclude a three-game series against the Cincinnati Reds.

GAME! SECTION By GeorGe Dickie

Twelve weeks after fracturing a vertebra in his back in a crash, Denny Hamlin is back with his eyes trained firmly on the prize – making the Chase for the Sprint Cup. Indeed, as May turned to June, the 32-year-old Tampa, Fla., native had run two full races since his four-week layoff and appeared to be in midseason form. After retiring after 23 laps from the No. 11 FedEx Toyota he drives for Joe Gibbs Racing at the May 5 Aaron’s 499 at Talladega, Hamlin found his stride, qualifying sixth and finishing second at the Southern 500 in Darlington on May 11, followed by a pole position and fourth-place finish at the Coca-Cola 600 in Charlotte on May 26. His goal for this injury-abbreviated season is to qualify for the 10-race Chase. At this writing, he stood 24th in the Cup standings, 53 points outside the top 20, where he’d need to be to qualify for one of the two Chase wild cards, and 97 out of the top 10 to qualify outright. If he keeps racking up top-five finishes and mixes in a win or three, a Chase berth may not be such a tall order.

ALBUM REVIEWS Barenaked Ladies Take You on a Grinning Streak, Alice in Chains Blame the Devil for Dinosaurs Known for upbeat hits like “One Week” and the theme song to The Big Bang Theory, Barenaked Ladies is celebrating twenty-five years with their latest, Grinning Streak, and it’s a pleasant experience that fans will probably enjoy. They largely prefer static ‘90s rock numbers like their first single “Boomerang,” though “Limits” and “Did I Just Say That Out Loud?” surprise with a heavier-than-expected emphasis on beats and synths. The mid-tempo stomper “Gonna Walk” has nice saloon-style piano flourishes and “Odds Are” proves Jim Creeggan can still turn a humorous phrase when he sings, “Hit by the A train/Crash in an airplane/I wouldn’t recommend either one.” It won’t turn your world upside down and might make you long for classic BNL more than anything else, but Grinning Streak is still decent.

If you like Alice in Chains then you probably fall into one of two camps: Team Layne Staley or Team Jerry Cantrell. AIC hasn’t been quite the same since Staley’s death in 2002, but Cantrell & Co. have gamely tried to resurrect the band the last few years. Their latest, The Devil Put Dinosaurs Here, isn’t bad, but it still lacks the pain and emotional center Staley provided. “Hollow” has the trademark swirling, sinister guitar thing down, “Pretty Done” employs odd vocal melodies from Cantrell as per the usual and the title track sounds like it wants to be a nightmare, but really isn’t. It’s telling that two of the least AIC-like tracks—the more melodic, semi-acoustic “Scalpel” and “Choke”—are the biggest highlights.

SUMMER OF STRANGE TOUR 2013 INVADES CLUB RED singer-rapper also appeared on the “Hostile Takeover 2012” Tour, which was the longest consecutive tour in rap history.

Krizz Kaliko, Mayday and Stevie Stone at Club Red in Tempe on Thursday, June 13th Strange Music staples Krizz Kaliko, Mayday and Stevie Stone are set to embark upon the “Summer Of Strange Tour 2013.” The outing features 32 dates and kicked off June 5 at the Cotillion Ballroom in Wichita, Kansas and concludes July 20 at the State Theatre in Saint Petersburg, Florida. Key dates on the Summer Of Strange tour include June 13 at Club Red in Tempe, June 23 at the Roseland Theater in Portland and June 29 at the Marquis Theater in Denver. Tour headliner Krizz Kaliko has been a Strange Music mainstay for the last decade. He’s released four critically acclaimed albums on the Kansas City imprint and has recorded with Tech N9ne, Twista and T-Pain, among others. The

Mayday’s frontman and MC, Wrekonize, will release his debut album, The War Within, June 25, the day the Summer Of Strange Tour hits the Knitting Factory in Spokane, Washington. The introspective collection features the songs “Can’t Be Alone,” “Freak” and “Adrenaline,” and includes collaborations with Tech N9ne, Crooked I, Bun B, Posdnuos and fellow Mayday MC, Bernz. Mayday will release Believers, its second Strange Music album, July 16, three days before the tour arrives at Club Boa in Clermont, Florida. The set expands upon the chaotic, apocalyptic path rappers Wrekonize and Bernz introduced on its predecessor, 2012’s Take Me To Your Leader. As an added bonus, Monster Energy has teamed up with Mayday to offer a special Summer VIP Experience during the tour. See Maydayonline. com for more info.

‘LAST CALL’ AT AXIS/RADIUS SATURDAY, JUNE 29th

Legendary Scottsdale Nightclub to Close its Doors after 16 Iconic Years Age is not typically kind to the young nightclub. It’s virtually unheard of for a Scottsdale club to breach its 2 to 5-year life expectancy which makes it all the more extraordinary that Axis/Radius has firmly reined as the anchor of Scottsdale’s nightlife scene for more than 16 years – longevity that can only be classified as an industry anomaly and credited to ceaseless reinvention. And its metamorphosis continues…Come Saturday, June 29th, we will bid a bittersweet farewell to an Arizona legend as Axis/Radius prepares to close its doors to make way for two new Evening Entertainment Group concepts: Live Wire, a live-act entertainment venue and Bottle Blonde, a gourmet pizza-centric grub-hub with expansive patio beer garden. In 1997, the monumental dualstructured, two-story mega-club first emerged within the business complex-dominated Northeastern quadrant of Old Town. Its commanding presence paved the way for bar and nightclub business to blossom in an area that has since become the nucleus of Scottsdale nightlife, tagged the ‘Entertainment District.’ After first opening as a cigar

and martini bar concept with full-service kitchen, the iconic nightclub pledged to perpetually remodel its 17,000 square feet and successfully evolve with the changing music, culture and clientele of the times. Within its 16 years, Axis/Radius has been responsible for throwing the Valley’s most extravagant and memorable events while playing host to the biggest names in the sports, music and entertainment industries, including the likes of George Clooney, Jamie Foxx, Tiger Woods, Michael Jordon, Michael Bolton and Prince. Go-go dancers, glowing LEDs, flowing cocktails, exclusive VIP suites, seductive 32-belowzero fogs and the world’s most renowned DJs conducting the crowd – Axis/Radius has offered all components for the healthy dose of sensory overload that kept patrons returning for their weekend fix. For more than a decade, the nightclub has triumphed as a vibrant dance destination whose legacy as a Scottsdale staple will live-on through patrons’ experiences. Residents will agree, all those ofage have an ‘Axis-story’ to share. To honor its 16 years of revelries, Axis/Radius will open its doors for one final night – Saturday, June 29th – in celebrating its ‘Last Call.’ Join us as we welcome back our former resident DJs and toast a cherished Valley mainstay.

The Gelato Spot Local Chef Competition Schedule includes:

Local chefs have come together to participate in a charity competition for Phoenix Children’s Hospital while showcasing their gelato flavor creativity.

June

Each month this summer—June, July and August—all five Gelato Spot locations will feature three new flavors of gelato. These bold creations include daring ingredients such as olive oil, peanut butter and jelly, peach and, yes, bacon. Throughout the competition, votes will be tallied based on each scoop ordered, text message votes, Facebook polls and Yelp reviews. The top three chefs will enter a showdown the first week of September, and the winner will be awarded $5,000 to be donated on their behalf to Phoenix Children’s Hospital.

Page Springs Cellars to host family fun Cork Boat Race

Tie together some wine corks, superglue the flag and secure your Lego sailors for the Fourth Annual Cork Boat Race. June 29, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., homemade cork boats will take over the bayou of Oak Creek. This family event, hosted by Justin Ove, offers a getaway from the Valley heat at one of Arizona’s popular wineries. Cork boat racers can compete in two leagues—Showboat or Speedboat—and in three divisions—Lightweight, Heavyweight and No Hold Barge. Parking for the event is available on-site for racers only. Shuttles will be provided from the Fish Hatchery for all other attendees. Tickets are $30 for adults and $10 for kids, with a $25 boat fee. Boat rules and more event information can be found at PageSpringsCellars.com
