clubHOUSE is a new, daily, afternoon summer program combining a museum experience that fosters growth by exercising mind, imagination and body. The program is offered most weekdays from 1pm-4pm in June and July at The Mini Time Machine Museum of Miniatures. Projects and activities change daily, relating back to weekly themes that include geography, theater arts, space exploration and make believe. Each afternoon, children will complete a project that they can take home. Seeking to provide a stimulating childcare alternative that was open and flexible enough to fit many families’ budgets and busy schedules, The Mini Time Machine Museum developed clubHOUSE as an enriching and innovative solution. More than 60% of U.S. children spend some part of their day in daycare centers and preschools. The question of quality is vital. A high-quality experience has a more positive impact on children’s overall development. “Engaging children in a museum environment that is stimulating, challenging and allows them to take on the role as constructors of knowledge is an important summertime experience. It helps minimize ‘summer slide’- the learning loss attributed to lack of educational enrichment over the summer break from school,” says Nina Daldrup, Executive Director of The Mini Time Machine Museum of Miniatures. Knowing that TMC for Children helps families in many ways, The

Mini Time Machine was honored to receive their leadership support for clubHOUSE this year. “Strengthened by the leadership and generous financial support of the people in Southern Arizona, TMC for Children knows how important the quality of childcare services and programs are to their health and wellbeing. We have a great partnership with the museum and are honored to assist families in accessing the unique summertime experience they offer children in our community,” says Michael J. Duran, Vice President and Chief Development Officer, TMC Foundation. As reported in the Arizona Daily Star on September 26, 2012, Tucson was the sixth poorest of the nation’s large metropolitan areas in 2011, with a poverty rate of 20.4%, according to new data from the Census Bureau. TMC for Children’s involvement, along with private donations and funds raised by the museum’s Spring 2013 Dollhouse Raffle, make it possible to offer this innovative summer program free of charge (regularly priced at $20 per session) to families in the community demonstrating financial need. To help identify recipients, The Mini Time Machine Museum reached out to United Way of Tucson and Southern Arizona, who through their Read On Tucson program is able to identify eligible families and childcare providers. Families can also contact the museum directly to apply for financial assistance. More information about clubHOUSE, including weekly themes and instructor bios, can be found at www.theminitimemachine.org/ summertime. There is still space available and it is simple to register for clubHOUSE. The museum is still seeking donations to offer even more financial assistance. To register your child, donate to send a kid to clubHOUSE or to receive financial assistance, please contact The Mini Time Machine Museum of Miniatures Director of Education, Lisa Hastreiter-Lamb at 520881-0606 ext. 105 or lisahl@ theminitimemachine.org

REVIEWERS ROUNDTABLE The following are reactions from each of AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s film commentators in an effort to generate a well-rounded overview of this weekend’s new releases.

‘Fill the Void’

‘This is the End’

‘Shadow Dancer’

‘Sightseers’

While attending a party at James Franco’s house, Seth Rogen, Jay Baruchel, Craig Robinson, Jonah Hill and Danny McBride are faced with the apocalypse. As the world unravels outside, dwindling supplies and cabin fever threaten to tear apart the friendships inside. (R - 107 minutes)

Andrea Riseborough plays a single mother living in Belfast who is arrested for her part in an aborted IRA bomb plot in London and forced to become an informant for MI5 in order to protect her son’s welfare. Clive Owen and Gillian Anderson also star. (R - 96 minutes)

Steve Oram plays a man who takes his wife (Alice Lowe) on a journey through the British Isles. But before long, litterbugs, noisy teenagers and pre-booked caravan sites, conspire to shatter his dreams and send him - along with anyone who rubs him the wrong way - over a very jagged edge. (NR - 88 minutes)

Joseph: “This is the End” feels like one giant inside joke. Fortunately, anyone and everyone who considers themselves a movie fan is in on it. Having said that, the new apocalyptic comedy starring just about every actor who has ever appeared in a Judd Apatow production is not nearly as earthendingly sidesplitting as you might expect. Granted, it is outrageous, ostentatious and offensive - often crossing the fine line between amusement and annoyance - but the viewer will have to settle for the simple appreciation of seeing these stars satirize and sully themselves as well as one another. It is incredibly crude but also quite clever.

12

June 12th, 2013 - June 18th, 2013

Joseph: Despite an initially intriguing premise and a complex performance from actress Andrea Riseborough, “Shadow Dancer” is a mundane and monotonous movie. The new drama based on author Tom Bradby’s novel never picks up the pace enough to deliver viewers any authentic thrills and therefore loses them long before its cushioned climax. If this lifeless effort is any indication, James Marsh - who helmed one of 2011’s greatest motion pictures “Project Nim” - ought to stick to directing documentaries. Even star power in the form of Clive Owen cannot save this snoozefest of a feature film.

Joseph: “Sightseers” gives a bad name to the dark comedy genre. Director Ben Wheatley’s new movie, which boasts Edgar Wright - the mind behind “Shaun of the Dead,” “Hot Fuzz” and the upcoming “The World’s End” - as an executive producer, never really serves up any laughs. To make matters worse, its interpretation of the word “dark” is more meanspirited than merciless and the entire ordeal is essentially a one-trick pony, operating solely on a single gimmick that is never used to its fullest potential and quickly grows old. As a result, the viewer is left with little to do but be bored to death by unlikeable characters.

A devout 18-year-old Israeli is pressured to marry the husband of her late sister. Declaring her independence is not an option in Tel Aviv’s ultraOrthodox Hasidic community, where religious law, tradition and the rabbi’s word are absolute. (PG - 90 minutes) Stan: As always, when a look at cultural differences is presented, especially one that is strikingly different from our own, the contrasting difference and in this case, the ultraOrthodox Hasidic community, although entertainingly presented left this reviewer with the thought of an absolute rule is far from my psyche. As the saying goes, one doesn’t miss what one hasn’t experienced as ‘Fill the Void’ does just that, fill in that void that one hasn’t experienced. Randy: An extremely slowmoving, but likable comedy that introduces audiences to the Ultra-Orthodox Jewish culture. Despite this fable being set in modern-day Israel, the tale is very Shakespearean in tone. Although dramatic at moments, there is quite a bit of light comedy thrown in as the hunt for a grieving widow unfolds. Make the effort to sit through this little indie gem and you will be rewarded.

The following quotes were pulled from interviews conducted by AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s film columnists with talent speaking on behalf of movies recently released in theaters.

Writer/Director Lawrence Blume (‘Tiger Eyes’) By Joseph J. Airdo

“I read this novel when [my mother Judy Blume] first finished it. Of all her books, it kind of knocked my socks off partially because, in my mind, I was the character of Davey - a teenager who is torn from their roots in New Jersey and moved to the strange town of Los Alamos, New Mexico. That is what happened to me when my parents divorced. But, in the movie, Davey’s father is killed. It is a totally fictional novel but, thematically and emotionally, it really resonated with me. “Thematically, I was working with the transition from childhood to adulthood. In this particular case, when

Davey’s father is killed, her mother falls apart and can’t cope so she is sent to live in a place where she doesn’t know anybody. Suddenly, she has to make decisions for herself and figure out her own life. There is nobody there to tell her what to do or guide her through it. It happens to everybody at some point. Everybody eventually discovers that they are an individual with the power to affect their own lives and make it better or not. I was looking at that moment in time and using the drama of the story to try and explore those things.

“I feel very close to the story and [Judy] allowed me an enormous amount of space to make it the way that I wanted to, trusting that the way I was putting it together would work out and fulfill her vision. It was my attempt to bring her work into a new medium with a certain amount of integrity and translate the intimacy that she has with her characters - who are usually speaking in first-person monologues - into dramatic action. Hopefully, her fans will believe that I did that while preserving the quality of the book and say, ‘There should be more Judy Blume adaptations!’” – Lawrence Blume

Filmmaker Alex Gibney, Part 2 (‘We Steal Secrets: The Story of WikiLeaks’)

By Stan Robinson

fair with this film. I thought I really dug in to the story in a way that showed it complexity, not a kind of cheap, sort of black hat-white hat version of history.

WikiLeaks is an international, online, nonprofit organization, which publishes secret information, news leaks, and classified media from anonymous sources.Julian Assange, an Australian Internet activist, is generally described as its founder, editor-in-chief, and director.

“[A hearty chuckle by Alex when I asked him to ‘pitch’ me on his film!] “Oh man, I don’t like to do it and here’s why, I will give you the ‘pitch’ but here’s why I don’t like to ‘pitch’, its one of those things where if I could tell you exactly what it was about, I wouldn’t need to make the movie! I think there’s something about mystery in movies that’s really important and embracing contradictions, and ambiguities!

“So far, so good [on my question of public reaction to the film]! The general public has really liked the film quite a bit, the reviews are coming in and they are good, and the public at large has really embraced the film and I’m very happy about that! I really appreciate that you found your thoughts to be pretty neutral and not taking sides either way after viewing the film. I tried to be very

“I think that’s what its about, so, fundamentally it’s a great story about a few individuals who make a huge difference among some very powerful forces. But its also about secrets, about truth and lies, its about how people get corrupted, its about how other people remain strong, and, its about how we are all being changed by the internet. AZWeeklyMagazine.com

“If you follow the story, a lot of those things rattle around in your head; the most important thing is following the story of these individuals and this fantastic moment. It’s kind of like a thriller that takes place in the real world, and stays with you, long after you’ve left the theater” – Alex Gibney June 12th, 2013 - June 18th, 2013

SOLAR POWER IS SMART BUSINESS

Brooklyn Pizza Company and Sky Bar are the first two businesses in Southern Arizona to set 100% of their electricity demand with solar energy. The decision is an example of the growing leadership of Arizona businesses that are using solar power to address the rising cost of energy and the impact of greenhouse gases on the environment.

The solar installation, located on Tucson’s historic 4th Avenue, is comprised of 323 highefficiency solar panels located on both the building’s rooftop as well as custom parking structures. The solar electric system will also serve as an electric vehicle charging station. The system is expected to generate over 160,000kWh of electricity per year resulting in more than $488,000 in utility costs savings over the next 25 years. In addition to the environmental and economic benefits, this system serves to inform customers through an innovative educational display. Current energy production, green benefits, and fun eco-facts rotate on the wall-mounted monitor located in Brooklyn’s dining room. This is possible with the use of an online data monitoring system which provides historical power production and energy data. Commercial Solar Pays Off Solar electric (photovoltaic) systems benefit commercial operations in a multitude of ways.

June 12th, 2013 - June 18th, 2013

In addition to being a visible statement of a business’ commitment to being green, the outlay offers a typical return on investment of 15% or better. The financial picture is brighter for businesses compared to residences for several reasons: they typically pay more for electricity than residential customers, the state tax credit cap is higher at $25,000, and businesses can depreciate the cost of the system, leading to further savings. Financial incentives account for over 82% of the total system cost excluding depreciation. In addition, the solar system will provide 100% of electricity needs for Sky Bar and Brooklyn Pizza Company. By Jim Gressinger Tucsonans are indeed fortunate. We have many fine museums and other historical attractions that are unlike any in the world. Here are 3 of our Tucson favorites. For reasons that escape me, almost no one knows about them. SouthernArizonaGuide.comhas short videos about two of them. Go to Main Menu > Museums. Franklin Automobile Museum. Hardly anyone alive today remembers the Franklin automobile. From 1906 until the company’s demise in the depression of the 1930’s, these cars were very popular. Beautifully restored, these classic cars housed at this little museum are nothing less than fine art on wheels. 1405 East Kleindale Road; Tucson, AZ 85719 (Entrance is on Vine Ave.).(520)326-8038. Closed during the summer, but you can call and arrange a tour. Admission: $5. Note: the Franklin is located on an unpaved, one-way road. Downtown History Museum. This is one of three Arizona Historical Society museums in Tucson. It has interesting exhibits about life in Tucson from the late 1800’s through the 1950’s. One of the most popular is the Dillinger exhibit that tells the story of how, in 1934, Tucson police captured Public Enemy #1 and his whole gang. You can even visit the Hotel Congress a few blocks from the museum where the gang stayed just before their capture. Tucson has a story to tell and it’s a good one.140 N. Stone Avenue (in the Wells Fargo Bank building). (520) 770-1473. Admission $3.

features you should not miss. One is the restored Locomotive 1673. If a docent is handy, you can climb up into the cab and ring the bell. The other is the life-size statue of two men: Wyatt Earp & Doc Holliday. They are heavily armed and looking very intent. The statue is on the site where Frank Stillwell’s body was found one morning in 1882. If you don’t know this story, I suggest you go to SouthernArizonaGuide.com > Local History > Earp Vendetta Ride. 414 N. Toole Avenue. (520) 623-2223. For dining within a block, I recommend: Maynard’s at the other end of the train depot; Cup Café in the Hotel Congress across the street; Monkey Burger a block over on 6th St.; or Diablo Burger on Congress St. just the other side of the hotel.
