Tyson; Makes an Excellent Documentary By Randy Montgomery
Director James Toback’s documentary Tyson on the life and career of Mike Tyson begins tediously slow. We are introduced to the 42year old retired boxer immediately upon the start of the film, where he chronicles his childhood and the story of how he got involved in boxing. Tyson rambles on and on, almost to the point where you consider walking out. Just as my patience grew thin, the story became more intriguing, and the man who typically shows very little emotion other than anger, started to break down and open up. This is Tyson like you have never seen him before. Beyond the rape charges, divorce from Robin Givens and fights with Don King, there was much more to the man once nicknamed “The Baddest Man on the Planet.” His first 19 fights were won by knockout, but as the athlete grew older, his ability to perform and his passion for the sport started to gradually fade. During the 90 minute documentary, Tyson explains exactly why he agreed to fight Holyfield in the now famous 1996 and 1997 matchups. He also discusses the reason behind his “biting incident” that shocked the world. After these defeats, Tyson still went on to fight Lennox Lewis and several others in fights he knew he would never win. We learn the rationale behind his decisions and what drove the once great boxer to ultimately humiliate himself in front of millions. I can’t believe I am going to say this, but you walk out of Tyson actually feeling sorry for the man. He has had a tremendous career and even more notoriety over the years. Seeing how his life has progressed watching this documentary makes you feel a little sad. Just days after seeing Tyson, I attended the press screening of The Hangover, a hilarious comedy about a group of guys celebrating a bachelor party in Las Vegas. While the film was quite comical, Mike Tyson appears in a really silly role that made me think
at home even furthers the sorrow you feel. You need not be a fan or a lover of boxing to be intrigued by this film, as Tyson is a fascinating documentary.

FILM! SECTION “Away We Go”, Sometimes, the heart is where home is!
Movie review by Stan Robinson We’ve heard the phrase; home is where the heart is. Away We Go gives us a lot to think about as we, in our own lives, decide where we call home, that grounding element to living life. Burt (John Krasinski) and Verona (Maya Rudolph), who have had a LTA, (living together arrangement) for quite some time, are going to have a baby. Subconsciously throughout their relationship, they have become emotionally dependent on the stability of Burt’s parents Jerry and Gloria (Jeff Daniels and Catherine O’Hara). About six months into the pregnancy, the news comes that Burt’s parents are moving away from Colorado!

At the on-set Burt and Verona are unsettled by the news. After talking it through, they decide it’s their lives and they can live anywhere they choose. The soon-to-be parents decide to find that special place to call home. Their journey takes them to: Phoenix/Tucson to visit her sister Grace (Carmen Ejogo) where their perspectives are refreshed; in Wisconsin, its Burt’s cousin Ellen (Maggie Gyllenhaal) and her partner Roderick (Josh Hamilton) and their elaborate ideas on raising their own children; Montreal and their former college classmates Tom (Chris Messina) and Munch (Melanie Lynskey) with a house full of children; and finally Miami, to visit Burt’s brother Courtney (Paul Schneider), where they realize that they must define “home” on their own terms. Away We Go is a wonderful film that not only provides insight for those about to become parents. I also reflected on my choices for the lifestyle I chose, for my later years, after retiring last October. Away We Go will have you examining your choices; the cast in each of the cities reminds us of people we know in our real lives! “The Taking of Pelham 123”, is still intriguing with this 3rd version! Another re-make you’re thinking? That seems to be the main topic being discussed, endlessly, these days. I’m reminded of the statement my film production professor drummed into our subconsciousness, “A good film starts with the printed word, if those words capture the essence of emotions, they’re priceless as well as timeless”. Think Shakespeare’s “Hamlet”, written around 1600, has seen hundreds of “re-telling” on both stage and screen, so don’t let the thought of a re-make cloud your view! The basic story, of a New York City subway dispatcher’s ordinary day thrown into chaos by the hijacking of a subway train in return for ransom by a highly armed group, which turns his day into a face-off with the mastermind behind the crime, is the essence of this story. The 1974 version, considered a classic, was the study of the battle of wills between two men who will stopped at nothing to achieve their goals, starred Walter Matthau and
Robert Shaw. In 1998, the basic theme was re-visited in the form of a made-for-TV movie starring Edward James Olmos (during his highly visible “Miami Vice” run) and Vincent D’Onofrio. A key feature of the story is the bad guys had names like Mr. Blue, Mr. Grey, Mr. Brown, and Mr. Green, adding to the ominousness aura of the event. With director Tony Scott, the younger brother of Ridley and partners in Scott Free Productions, this version has the Scott brothers’ filmmaking signature. Denzel Washington (as the dispatcher) loves working with the Scott brothers. His projects with Tony include Deja Vu (2006), Man on Fire (2004), and the very good American Gangster (2007) with older brother Ridley. And, who can play a “heavy” (industry-speak for “bad guy”) better than John Travolta! My favorite with Travolta as the “heavy” is Broken Arrow (1996). His line of “Would you mind not shooting at the thermonuclear weapons?” still brings a chuckle! Starring Denzel Washington, John Travolta, Luis Guzmán, John Turturro, and James Gandolfini. Directed by Tony Scott; written by Brian Helgeland; Columbia Pictures release; Rated R for violence and pervasive language; Runtime: 106 minutes.

What represents a “good value” is different for each of us. In my time at Sportsman’s I have been part of a team known for finding great wines for that special event, a gift for the connoisseur, your private collection, and wines that are hard to find at any cost. I have always taken great pleasure seeking out those gems, but I am most proud of discovering fantastic everyday or value wines. The wines you use to celebrate exciting things like getting the car washed, mowing the lawn or just making it to Friday. Wine shopping is simple enough on the surface. I mean you go to the store pick up a bottle and go home, right? That said, wading through the literally thousands of wines available and picking out the ones right for you can be a daunting task. Wine is supposed to enrich your life and be enjoyable, not a source of angst and frustration. It is in this light that I plead the case of the wine merchant, steward, cellar master or wine guy. What ever you call us, that’s what we’re here for. We taste wines with you and your tastes in mind. To us there is nothing more satisfying than finding someone’s new favorite. That’s why I urge you to find a shop and take a moment to get to know the staff. Tell them a bit about what you like and ask for
some recommendations. Give them the chance to earn your trust. After you’ve tried the wines go back, tell them you favorites and tell them what you didn’t like. From there you and they will begin to feel out each others tastes and personalities. In the end you will be rewarded for your efforts with great wine and a pleasurable shopping experience.

Also, are you following us on Twitter yet? @bdiggs and @MyFeMy Butterscotch Swag: It may sound like the name of some new trendy cocktail, but its actually the fitting title of Isse Fresh’s new collection, and believe me it looks as good as it sounds. If butterscotch was the inspiration, then Isse is definitely the swag. Styled like a fashion forward Kanye West, Isse, sporting a 70s handlebar mustache, dresses in the same candy colored hues you can find in his art. Using paint and canvas as a medium, Isse’s paintings pop with vibrant color and familiar characters. So I’m not surprised when he names Warhol as one of his influences. Housed in After Hours Gallery off of Central and McDowell in downtown Phoenix, the collection makes the walls come alive with its vibrance. His paintings are the kind that can define a room. The kinds of paintings that make you think of a particular scene in a movie and smile with a hint of nostalgia. I ask him what his inspiration was for one of my favorite pieces, a silhouette of a woman coming out of teal blue. Black paint drippings substitute as her fashion top. Model-esque, she’s frozen in a high-fashion pose. Isse tells me in his high voice that he didn’t know she was there when he began the painting. He goes on to say that the canvas was maroon and the painting drippings were already there. Towards the end of our conversation he asks me if I signed up to win a free print from his Butterscotch Swag collection. I tell him I did. We were disappointed to find that not one finalist from our great state made the cut. In that same vein we decided to compile a list of the Night Owl’s Favorite Designed Places. Selections for this will be based on qualities like design, of course, ambience and that something special that truly sets apart that particular restaurants, cafe, and bar. What’s the biggest change you have seen in the DJ industry in the last 5 years? By far, the digital revolution. The technology has made it easy for anyone to buy a laptop, acquire software & a music library (whether legally or not) and call themselves a DJ. Us guys who started on vinyl and cassettes have seen the changes through the years. Just because you have a knife doesn’t make you a doctor. You have to know how to use your tools and develop your talent. Besides good entertaining skills, one should have backup skills just in case. These could include bow staff skills, nunchuck skills, computer hacking skills, etc.

How did you get started in the industry? Started DJing for school June 11th - June 17th, 2009
What do you do that differentiates you from other quality DJs? I think personality is a big asset. If you can build a good rapport with the staff and management of a venue, they buy into you and not just your awesomeness on the wheels of steel. My mindset on location is not about showing how much I can scratch, but to use it as one small component to everything else I bring. What’s the most gratifying thing that ever happened to you as a DJ? I couldn’t say it was one big thing, but rather many small things added up. Every time someone comes up to me and says, “You’re really good” or “Wow, that was amazing” or even “Dude, you rock”, it re-assures me that I am

somebody and I’ve made it in this world because drunk people dig me! There have been many sober people who have said the same thing, they’re just more articulate. Tell us a secret about yourself or your show: Sometimes, when it’s really late at night and nobody’s looking…I can’t say. If anyone knew, I’d be deported…..…again. What advice would you give someone who wants to be a performance-level DJ? Take your time and learn everything you can. There are no short cuts, so pay your dues and make connections as you go. Enjoy your craft! What’s the biggest misconception people have about DJs? That we’re all the same, play the same music, all have Mac computers and are self-absorbed artists. This only applies to most of them…ha ha! But seriously, there are many talented DJs out rocking parties and clubs. We all have feelings and don’t like it when you stand still on the dance floor and make a funny face at us if you don’t like a song. If you’re patient, in 2 minutes a different song will follow next. What do you think will happen to your music in the next 2 years? Unless I invest in one of those vaccuum bags, it’ll probably get stale. I left one song out for a week and it turned green and left a stain on my carpet. It wasn’t pretty. What will people hear when they listen to your music? Some bass drum, snare, cymbals, a bunch of samples that originated back in the day but artists have reused them and kids think it’s brand new. You’ll also hear some singing, sometimes by me if I forget to turn the mic off. If there was a “Golden Rule” for being a DJ, what would it be? Show respect to your fellow DJs. Too many stories about DJs stabbing each other in the back over a gig. There’s enough work
in this town for the good DJs. Why not work together to build our profession. Do good by me and it’ll all come back around. Do you have any CDs out that we can buy? I’m willing to sell any of my CDs. I don’t use them anymore. Oh, you mean of stuff I’ve mixed? Yeah, I got a bunch of them. Usually I accept a donation for my mortgage or gas money or late night Waffle House. Find me in the club and ask me what I have. Your favorite place to perform in the city? I enjoy playing all over. My favorite is wherever the crowd is live. When you feel that energy, it gets you pumped up to rock even harder than you thought you could. If you could change one thing about the DJ-Club scene in town, what would it be? I wish that people could embrace more music than just the crap radio puts in their heads. People should go out earlier, too. They show up at 11pm and can only stay for 3 hours. Why not get the most out of your cover charge? Please take a few sentences and promote yourself in any way that the questions did not cover. Lie, brag, make claims you can’t possibly support, give shameless plugs, tell us the preferred groupies we should order for you…You know, the usual. I’ve been in the scene for a while and have weathered changes. I still enjoy what I do and hope I can keep doing it as long as people go out to dance. If you see me in the DJ booth, come say hi. You’ll probably receive a smile and a “great to see you” unless you’re showing me a bitter face because you don’t like the song that’s on at that very moment. I’ll be rocking Wednesday & Sunday nights at The Library and Fridays at Stone Rose Lounge. By the time this goes to print, I may have picked up another night somewhere or changed venues, that’s the life of a DJ.

Cadillac CTS

Back in 2008, Cadillac introduced their all new version of the CTS, which is carried over for 2009. We had two, a black one with sport suspension and a later one with standard suspension and cherry metallic paint. The base engine is a 263 horsepower V-6 which is what we had. It has enough power, but a 304 horse version is offered for those who want more. So is a 6-speed manual gearbox, but I found the optional 6-speed automatic easier to live with in traffic. It can be manually operated by steering wheel paddle shifters, so you get the best of both methods.
The automatic is $1,300 more, but worth it. The sport suspension in our black car handled great, but provided a stiff ride, which I think is out of place in a luxury machine. The base suspension version had a comfortable ride, but seemed to corner about as well as the sport car, so this was my favorite. The interior on both looked very nice. The base price starts at $36,000. With upgraded leather trim, upgraded sound system, wood trim, automatic tranny and other minor stuff, both stickered for about $42 thousand. Seems reasonable to me.

Hot Pipes Talent Showcase at El Pedregal

Scottsdale- The summer-long Hot Pipes vocal competition (much like a local American Idol) launches its season on Saturday June 13th at el Pedregal Shops and Dining in North Scottsdale. The competition continues every Saturday evening through September 12th (excluding Labor Day Weekend and 4th of July) and runs from 6 to 10pm. El Pedregal, showcases local talent this summer and promises to make this north Scottsdale marketplace the coolest spot on hot summer nights. The first annual Hot Pipes Talent Showcase, a competition for local June 11th - June 17th, 2009

Les Claypool Brings Eclectic Cheese to Marquee
Tempe- Les Claypool fans will be thrilled then, knowing that he’s bringing his ingenious mind ramblings to share with the masses at the Marquee Theater (730 N. Mill Ave., Tempe) on Friday June 12th. This will probably be one of the most unique experiences a person could ever have. “You need to keep finding things to keep your juices flowing”. This sums up the career of one of the most eclectic and prolific musicians in the industry today, Les Claypool. Known mostly as the bassist and driving creative force behind the 1990’s funk metal fusion band Primus, Claypool has since continued to evolve through several less mainstream (if you could ever say that Primus was) yet musically unique bands. In addition, he has forayed into screenwriting, acting and even fiction writing. Primus made an unexpectedly big splash on the scene emerging in 1990 with their first studio album, Frizzly Fry. Subsequent releases such as Sailing the Seas of Cheese, Tales from the Punchbowl and Pork Soda produced long-standing hits such as “Jerry Was a Racecar Driver” and “Wynona’s Big Brown Beaver”, bizarre music for mainstream airplay. Claypool says it was something of a shock, calling it “an anomaly”. He remembers saxophonist Skerik musing “Wow…one of us got in” and relates it to one of the lunatics becoming part of the asylum staff. Primus has not release any new studio material since 1999’s Rhinoplasty but Claypool has kept ridiculously busy

Cave Creek- Acclaimed Folk/ Acoustic/Folk Rock artist, Slaid Cleaves will perform at Cave Creek Coffee Company (6033 E. Cave Creek Road in Cave Creek) on Friday, June 12th at 7:30pm (doors open at 7pm). Winner of the prestigious New Folk competition at the Kerrville Folk Festival, Cleaves is known for his

He even acts in (and contributed music to) the 2008 movie Pig Hunt (about a monster pig ravaging the pot fields of northern California). Claypool says he does nothing he’s not really passionate about and is, therefore, a man of many passions. His latest album (and his second solo album) is entitled Of Fungi and Foe. Inspired by the material he put together for the video game Mushroom Men, the album has an incredibly dark, tribal feel. Of course the signature Les Claypool bass work is evident all over but there’s an overall intensity and imagery that’s new. Claypool says the material evolved with “a few added tidbits and a bit of gypsy sauce”. What advice would you give a startup band? Never give up on your music… because, dreams really do come true. Would’ve never thought my destiny would be in a ukulele. Have to be flexible and adapt in order to find your niche. From there, everything else will follow.
Why did this band get started? Didn’t really set out to start a band. I’ve had, and been in bands in the past, and I just didn’t want the drama, personalities, etc. I was doing fine as a solo. It came together by accident, by meeting people who wanted to play with me, saw a vision, bought into a dream, and grew from there. – Ukulele Ray
What’s the biggest misconception people have about musicians? That we make a lot of money and that it’s easy doing what we do. None of it comes without lots of hard work and dedication. You get out of it, what you put in.
Do you play cover tunes or originals? We play our own originals as well as put a new spin on old covers. I’m known for my comedy and do a number of original song parodies like: Cock-Eyed Girl (Brown Eyed Girl); Oh, SUZY PEW! (Susie Q); Big ‘Ole SUV (Little GTO); Arnold’s Island (Gilligan’s Island), etc.

Who gets the most Groupies and why? Have to give this one to Ukulele Ray, too. His charismatic personality, chiseled features, fierce green eyes and long black hair seems to attract some of the wildest groupies. He’s got that vampire/pirate thing goin’ on. Tommie runs a pretty close second… groupies can’t resist his warmth and Hendrix-style ukulele solos.
How would you describe your style of music? I’d call it “eclectic acoustic,” since we play such a variety of everything. From rock to reggae, we’ve created a sound where the ukulele is incorporated as the lead instrument… not replacing guitar, but enhancing it. Seeing someone rock out on a ukulele is an amazing experience. Definitely found our niche! Are you any good? You’d have to ask my girlfriends.
What’s the most difficult aspect of trying to make it in this biz? Finding where you belong in the huge ocean of the industry. So many bands… so many singers… guitarists… etc. Competition is fierce and the talent is so amazing. What do you think will happen to your band in the next 2 years? It’s my hope that we just keep on… keeping on, touching people with our spirit and song. Can’t do any better than that, because that’s really, to me, what this is all about. What will people see when you perform live? They’ll experience familiar songs, presented in a new, fun and fresh way… with a little comedy and lot’s of spirit. We don’t just stand up and play a bunch of songs… it’s a show!
How would you classify your music? Un-Classifiable… we try to stay away from labeling our style and music. Labels belong on cans… not something that’s “Fresh,” new and different.

Name one thing that you hope to accomplish during your musical career. Well, being on Fender’s® “A” List of artists with such legends as Eric Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Peter Townsend, Jeff Beck, Sting, Shakira, etc. is pretty awesome, in its own right. Guess the next best thing is the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

How often do you perform live? I, personally, perform LIVE daily (much better than trying it “DEAD”). In regard to the band… we perform sometimes as many as 4 and 5 nights a week at a variety of venues, from nightclubs to country clubs and from casinos to festivals, no telling where we’ll turn up. Currently, we’re at The Library on Mill in Tempe Sundays from 1 to 5pm and at Sundance’s in Prescott Saturdays from 4 to 8pm through the Summer. Who is the craziest band member and why? No doubt the craziest band member is Ukulele Ray, himself. No telling where he’s going to go in the show. He’s always full of surprises with his repertoire of impressions, madcap comedy and zany personality. No two shows are ever alike. What do you do different that kicks ass over other bands? In one simple Hawaiian word that says it ALL… “UKULELE!”

We’re performing at The Library’s “CHILL-ONMILL” Summer Sundays from 1-5pm, as well as Sundance’s in Prescott every Saturday through the Summer from 4-8pm.
