CITY! COVER STORY

FC TUCSON

Joshua Pearson/FCTucson.com

By H. Jose Bosch With less than 10 minutes remaining in FC Tucson’s match against the OC Blues Strikers FC, a scrum 40 yards away from the net resulted in the ball squeaking out to open space. Midfielder Eli Galbraith-Knapp saw the ball and ran toward it with the singular goal of launching the ball into the back of the net. It made no difference he was 40 yards away. Galbraith-Knapp took his chance with absolutely no hesitation. The ball found the back of the net. The crowd went into delirium. And FC Tucson finished off a 9-1 win over a division opponent. Soccer is all about taking chances. Over the course of 90 minutes, players all over the field take their chances during one-on-one play or when they’re passing to teammates. The improvisational aspect of the game makes each moment of the match a point where seemingly hundreds of different outcomes can happen.

8

All these possible outcomes and all these players taking chances can make a player’s head (or even a fan’s head) spin. But when a player takes the chance that results in a goal or an assist or even a crowd-pleasing pass that leads to nothing, the euphoria of the moment leaves everyone wanting more. And just like the soccer player who challenges the opposition by taking chances, FC Tucson is challenging the Old Pueblo to take a chance on soccer. Soccer has already taken a chance on Tucson. Major League Soccer has committed to bringing MLS teams to the city for preseason training during the FC Tucson Desert Diamond Cup. The state of Arizona has scheduled more state tournament matches in Tucson. Even countries have come to play soccer in Tucson: this past February, it was Canada and Denmark. At FC Tucson matches it’s more than just the play on the field that makes it the most fun in

June 19th, 2013 - June 25th, 2013 AZWeeklyMagazine.com

town. It’s the fan culture and atmosphere of soccer. Forget sitting and clapping politely. Fans are standing, jumping, cheering, chanting and singing, just like in great venues around the world. The home team is showered with praise and the visitors are booed, taunted and cajoled well into the night. Of course, alcoholic bevvies flow throughout the event to complement the wafting aroma of hotdogs and burgers that tease the appetite of the buzzing crowd. FC Tucson matches aren’t just sporting events. There are giant block parties. And they’re a lot easier on the senses than eardrum-shattering night clubs and more interesting than an evening of happy hour specials at a franchise restaurant. FC Tucson games are social gatherings for you and 1,000 of your closest friends with the sole purpose of celebrating and pushing the home team to a win.

Soccer is non-stop drama. Soccer is the only sport that demands that its fans become part of the show. And, whether it’s the FC Tucson regular season, the FC Tucson Desert Diamond Cup, future international matches, or Mexican club teams, soccer has been unleashed in Tucson. So take a chance on FC Tucson and join the party because everyone is invited. Take that proverbial rip from 40 yards out and take a chance that you fall in love. Find out why an FC Tucson is more than a game; it’s a way of life. Larry Guarano/FCTucson.com

FILM! SECTION 12

,

REVIEWERS ROUNDTABLE The following are reactions from each of AZ Weekly Entertainment Magazine’s film commentators in an effort to generate a well-rounded overview of this weekend’s new releases.

the story unfolds, but unfortunately it takes a familiar path. Writer, producer and actor Brit Marling turns in a wellacted performance, although her character’s actions are not always believable. While you may empathize for The East’s intentions, you may not agree with their methods.

‘Tattoo Nation’

‘The East’

Filmmaker Eric Schwartz examines how tattoos went from something that was put on you to an expression that comes from within you. (NR - 86 minutes)

Brit Marling plays an operative for an elite private intelligence firm who finds her priorities irrevocably changed after she is tasked with infiltrating an anarchist group known for executing covert attacks upon major corporations. (PG-13 - 116 minutes)

Stan: The practice of identifiable body markings has been around since the dawning of man. Tattoos commonly referred to as ‘ink’, have become quite prevalent as each generation takes their ‘right of passage’ in shaping and determining their way of life on planet Earth. As the film ‘Tattoo Nation’ unfolded following three legendary tattoo pioneers: Charlie Cartwright, Jack Rudy and Freddy Negrete, I was reminded of my two tattoos and the memories behind them. As closing credits rolled for director Eric Schwartz film, the revelations, the fervor, and my own elevation of tattoos to the level of art after viewing his film, I thought, how fitting it is that one art form, filmmaking, which I’ve been involved all of my life, has broadened my perspective on another art form. I’ll never look at tattoos in the same way ever again, which, indeed is a good thing…

Stan: Co-written and directed by Zal Batmanglij, ‘The East’ with its understated deliberate pacing, reminds us of the power of the corporate sector and its underlying driving force that affect’s our daily lives. As always, the ‘evil empire’ theme with the power of those to protect the status quo, and the fervor of those who strive to expose the extent and often misuse, is a reminder that the protecting of corporate ‘secrets’ is just as tantamount to those operatives relative to government ‘secrets’. Randy: An eye for an eye. An interesting concept to watch unfold as an anarchist group targets major corporations that have injured others and/or caused environmental damage. The mystery is intriguing as

Joseph: “The East” is the kind of movie that not only entertains you but also makes you think - and not just about the story, which is told with terrific intelligence, but also its very real implications. You will, without a doubt, believe that the system is indeed broken after having seen writer/director Zal Batmanglij’s drama, which was co-written by star Brit Marling. How to go about fixing it, though, is the pinnacle problem as the motion picture proves that it is an exceptionally complex issue. Save for some mid-movie meandering, you are certain to be breathless from beginning to end.

‘We Steal Secrets: The Story of WikiLeaks’ Filmmaker Alex Gibney details the creation of Julian Assange’s controversial website WikiLeaks, which facilitated the largest security breach in U.S. history. (R - 130 minutes) Stan: Prominent in the news in sound bite fashion, director Alex Gibney presents a view that doesn’t take sides as the ‘blanks’ are examined relative to secrets, government, and citizens right to know. I learned as a news film editor early on in my production career, the five W’s are the prime directive for getting the complete story on

June 19th, 2013 - June 25th, 2013 AZWeeklyMagazine.com

a subject. As I applied them to ‘We Steal Secrets: The Story of WikiLeaks’, I was left with the thought ‘What a powerful piece of filmmaking’ and compelled to find out the current status of Julian Assange and WikiLeaks. Here’s those five W’s to add to your memory bank. Who is it about? What happened? When did it take place? Where did it take place? Why did it happen? Randy:A good documentary should give the viewer enough information to adequately cover all points of the story, but intrigue the viewer enough to want to learn more. Director Alex Gibney does just that. The WikiLeaks story unravels like a soap opera with more characters than a Telenovela. It also leaves the viewer asking questions about our government, cover-ups and more. A definite contender for Best Documentary of the Year.

Still haven’t seen that movie that your friends have been talking about? Film Columnist Randy Montgomery recaps what you may have missed in 140 characters or less. ‘Man of Steel’ ~ Lengthy battle scenes, stiff acting, a script that‘s all over the place and the lack of a comic book feel; this is Superman: 2013. Grade:C+

‘The Kings of Summer’ ~ My favorite film of the summer so far is an indie sleeper that should please older teens, young adults and discerning audiences. Grade: A

The story for 2000’s ‘Final Destination’ was originally the concept for an abandoned ‘X Files’ TV script.

Helen Hunt

By John Crook

Before Oscar 1) Everyone knows that Academy Award winner Helen Hunt starred in “Mad About You,” but can you name the 1982-83 sitcom in which Hunt played the daughter of another Oscar winner? 2) Well before he snagged his Academy Award, what actor played deranged Mel Profitt on “Wiseguy”?

Answers:

Questions:

1) “It Takes Two” with Patty Duke (“The Miracle Worker”)

‘The East’ ~ Thriller? Mystery? Anti-corporate environmental drama? A little of each that poses moral questions to debate w/ friends afterwards. Grade: B

‘The Purge’ ~ A great concept bogged down by predictability. Despite that, the film raises moral questions you’ll be discussing on the way home. Grade: C-

2) Kevin Spacey

‘This is the End’ ~ Gone are Hollywood’s golden days. Now we have Rogan, Hill, Franco,& McBride kindly giving us 2 hours of pot smoking & penis jokes. Grade: C-

‘The Internship’ ~ Two of my least favorite actors star in one of Hollywood’s biggest product placement ads to date. A few chuckles can’t save this two-hour advertisement. Grade: C-

Together and separately they perform songs by Dave Brubeck, Chet Baker, Julie London and Bobby Troup and others, all the while weaving in never-before heard stories of the originators of “West Coast Cool.” Prepare yourself for an unforgettable evening as these two hipsters send the music down as smoothly as a vodka martini on a warm summer night. This show is definitely a hit! The duo recently came off of a sold out tour throughout the country, hitting such cities as Toronto, LA, Cleveland, Cincinnati and Indianapolis where they were

She is recovered and a strong supporter of cancer prevention, treatment, finding cures and fighting back. In recognition of Cheryl’s brave battle against cancer, and ongoing support for cancer prevention and research, the American Cancer Society is proud to cosponsor “The West Coast Cool Show.”
