presented by Phoenix Art Museum Through October 18, 2009 Wednesday 10am – 9pm (Voluntary donation from 3pm – 9pm) Thursday - Saturday 10am - 5pm Sunday Noon – 5pm First Friday Evenings 6pm – 10pm (Voluntary donation) For more than twenty years, English artist Tony Foster has been visiting and painting in the world’s most contrasting and emotionally powerful environments - the depths of the Grand Canyon and the heights of Mount Everest. His travels have taken him to remote locations to paint on both the North and South Rims of the Canyon, and he is believed to be the only artist to ever create paintings of Everest from both the Nepal and Tibet sides of the mountain, which includes the North Face where hikers generally approach and the even more remote East Face. This exhibition is the culmination of these travels, bringing together approximately 25 recent studies and monumental watercolor paintings created at these breathtaking sites. AZWeeklyMagazine.com

“O’Horten”, Dry Norwegian humor with a “twist” of reality!

The next morning, Horten wakes at the usual time, gets dressed in his uniform, starts to work and en-route, he realizes he has nothing to do! As he wanders around the city for more than 24 hours, experiencing a series of adventures and miss-adventures, Horten, as well we, begins to separate the things he has to do in life and try to firmly grasp onto the things he wants to do. Some adventures are hilariously frightening, like riding as a passenger with a blindfolded driver and his dog, the driver has a heart attack! While others, like the visits to his favorite restaurant/pub, cigar/pipe shop, and the train depot serve as grounding forces as he observes the lives of others.

MOVIE QUOTES AND WHY WE LOVE THEM SO DEARLY Movies not only entertain us, they fill our lives with excitement and joy, sorrow and hope. The perfect, or not so perfect, lives of the characters can inspire us to do better - and sometimes to do worse. We love them, we hate them, we dress like them and we’re always quick to quote them. Studies have shown that nearly 100 percent of Americans often quote a movie line at some point of a conversation. And oddly enough, people get really, really disappointed when they quote a movie, only to be greeted with a confused look or blank stare. When someone hasn’t seen a movie you proudly recalled with a quote, the solidarity seems to be instantly broken. It’s kind of a way to cement “in-group membership” in a sense. People are genuinely surprised when someone does not understand or recall a certain quote, as we eagerly quote movies to those we feel have surely seen the movie. Movie quotes can serve to build a sense of community and can even work to change the direction or tone of a conversation. If you’re having a serious conversation and you quote something from “Dumb and Dumber” or “Anchor Man,” you can instantly lighten the mood by sharing a good laugh. It’s actually a form of bonding with someone who is also passionate about films and share a familiar connection to something you enjoy. Some of our favorite lines and most cherished quotes come from speeches, one-liners, punch-lines, bold statements and insults – even misquotes. These cherished words and phrases from movies and particular actors, both old and new, are remembered through popular use, critical acclaim, shock value and quotability. They remain with us forever – and are a joy to revisit time and time again.

For the Love of Wine By Nathan Mears

I love Syrah, or if you prefer Shiraz, as they are one and the same. As a result I would like to take a moment to sing its praises in the hope of getting a little back into your glass. Syrah has the ability to be many things to many people; it can big and rich, lean and spicy, complex and smoky or light and quaffable depending upon where it is grown and how it’s handled. Syrah is a noble grape that has produced many of the greatest red wines the world has ever known. Yep, I said some of the greatest wines ever produced. In today’s wine culture Australia is often associated with Syrah or Shiraz as the case may be. While I agree they can make excellent wines with Syrah. It was of course in France where Syrah made its mark. The Northern Rhone Valley is where this grade first made its mark. Places such as Hermitage and Côte Rôtie have provided the wines that inspired wine makers the world over. These wines are the reason we have Syrah grown from Sicily to New Zealand and Australia to Washington State.

mouth. Napa Valley also produces big Syrah with firm tannins and tablespoon more of the black pepper Syrah is often know for. Columbia Valley is the high desert wine region that encompasses most of Eastern Washington on into Oregon. This is home to rich, smoky almost meaty Syrah.

Pinot Noir or Sangiovese replacements. Cool climate Syrah tend to be leaner spicier wines that show more brightness in the fruit characters look for wines from Victoria or the Adelaide Hills in Australia or Carneros in California. The Rhone Valley’s Crozes-Hermitage produces some classic, old-world, medium bodied syrah showing some fresh fruit on the palate and smoky nose.

What the Aussies did was make it the cool and trendy grape with all of the cheap & cheerful juice they’ve sent our way. I applaud them for that, even if many of those cheap & cheerful wines have been less than exciting. I encourage you however not to paint Australian wines or regions wines with the same brush. Like people there is good and bad no matter where you look.

BY BRENT DIGGINS AND EFIA MOORE We all know the economy is tough and we may have to scale back a bit, so we’re going to focus on some local budget-friendly things to do including some great hotel deals and sweet summer cocktails that you can make at home. For all that happened, is happening and will happen in the Valley, read on. Also, are you following us on Twitter yet? @bdiggs and @MyFeMy (you even get to see what Efia looks like!) Stone Rose Lounge’s Local Appeal: One Valley hot spot, Stone Rose Lounge, has decided to create affordable specials for locals. Listening to the demands of the party people, the contemporary lounge located inside the upscale Fairmont Scottsdale resort had begun to offer specials and pricing that everyone is looking for these days. People may choose from 50 percent off all call liquors, house wines and special menu items during happy hour from 5-7:30 p.m. weekdays. Filling in the gap on Monday’s with “Sip Stylishly” guests of Stone Rose can look forward to half-priced martinis and wines by the glass from 6p.m. to 2 a.m. If your birthday is coming up choose to celebrate at Stone Rose Lounge where you can receive a complimentary bottle of champagne. To see what other specials await at Stone Rose Lounge visit, www.fairmont. com/scottsdale. Refreshing Summer Cocktails: This week we’ve seen the return of triple digits, and the real start of summer set in with the 105 plus degree heat, causing many of us to move our living room poolside. I refuse to take this summer heat lying down or sober, so I made a list of refreshing beverages to help me through the long, hot Arizona Summer. Tequila Sunrise: Originally created and served at the Valley’s own Arizona Biltmore Resort, the popular recipe for the concoction includes tequila, orange juice, and grenadine syrup. Because of the colors and layering affect of the mixture it was aptly named after a bright Sunrise. If you’re feeling adventurous you can try the original drink recipe, which called for crème de cassis, lime juice and soda water. Ol’ Fashioned Tom Collins: If you’re not a fan of tequila then talk to Tom. Using carbonated water, sugar, lemon juice and Gin, a Tom Collins is reminiscent of old fashion summer time lemonade, only grown up. Hint: If you’re not a fan of gin you can substitute with vodka. White Wine Spritzer: The original “wine cooler” a wine spritzer is a great way to keep your white wine chilled. You can use any variety of white wine, but Pinot Grigio and sparkling, sweeter wines are recommended. To make, pour wine over ice and top with mineral water or club soda. You may garnish with lime or serve alone.

Hotel Deals: We are lucky enough to have access to some of the nation’s best resorts here in the Valley. During our freakin’ hot summer, their rates are slashed offering us an opportunity to experience luxury at a fraction of the cost. Here are a few of the deals that you can find this summer: ●●

●●

Hotel Valley Ho: One of my personal favorites, the Valley Ho is featuring a “So Summer” special, that includes a free summer celebratory drink upon arrival, 10 percent off the first VH Spa visit, 20 percent off dinner at Trader Vic’s and a Westcor shopping book with more than $700 in discounts and VIP passes to area nightclubs. It starts at $149. Plus they have a “Days of Summer” calendar that features events like live music and dive-in movies. For more info go to hotelvalleyho.com. The Boulders: Want to get away (or at least 40 minutes from downtown Phoenix)? Visit the Boulders which gives you a different feel than much of the Valley. Regular summer rates start at $129 per night. And they have a “Golf and Spa” package which starts at $339 per night and includes awesome casita accommodations, a daily choice of one round of golf or $100 spa credit, $50 dining credit and complimentary access to the Golden Door Spa. Visit theboulders.com Mondrian Scottsdale: For $145, they’re offering their “Play Package” which includes a room, a $25 food and beverage credit at the BLUE Pool Bar and Grill and 20 percent off treatments at Agua Spa. Visit mondrianscottsdale.com. W Scottsdale: The much talked about W Scottsdale has a summer vacation package starting at $189 per night. Each summer package gets ya reserved seating at the hot, hot WET pool, complimentary breakfast, two complimentary cocktails, tanning lotion, a pair of flip-flops and one night’s accommodations. Flip-flops? I’m in. Visit starwoodhotels.com.

Movies: I saw the Hangover. It was funny. That’s about all I have to offer as far as movies go, but Stan Robinson who writes in our FILM! section has been in the movie industry for 22 years each week he has movie reviews and celebrity interviews. Plus he just celebrated one year at our fine publication. If you have an entertainment event or item to include in “The Night Owl” send to brent.diggins@ azweeklymagazine.com. “The Night Owl” will cover restaurants, clubs, bars, celebrities, music and other miscellaneous events. Be safe, be a good person. Till next time…

Good Tips for Impressive Chips The most important thing you can do to improve your chipping game is to know your distances precisely. Here’s a drill that can help. Find an area where you can pace off 30, 60 and 90 yards. Then place a small builder’s brick at each distance. Hit pitch shots at the 30-yard brick until you land one on it. You’ll get a great thrill from seeing the ball bounce way up in the air, and you should start to develop confidence and an aggressive attitude when you begin to hit such a small target with regularity. After you hit the brick from 30 yards, go for 60 then 90 yards. A good chip-shot player is usually a good lag putter as well. That’s because he or she understands how to use the speed, slope and grain of the green to his or her advantage. You should start any short-game practice by getting a feel for the greens you’ll be playing that day.

Spend a few minutes on the putting green before you move over to the pitching and chipping area. The idea is to get a feel for how the ball will behave when it’s rolling on the ground. A small investment in learning the tendencies of the greens will pay off many times over. Know the geography. Is there a geographical feature that affects the ball consistently? In the mountains, the ball will often tend to break away along a certain ridge. On seaside courses, it will move toward the ocean. My friends on the tour always make a mental note of how the land drains and use it to their advantage. Know the grain of the green. This is particularly important on Bermuda grass, but it’s a factor on every course. Go to the center of the putting green and roll several balls toward the fringe in each direction. See how the different putts behave and note the effect of the grain on each one. If you ever have the opportunity to watch a PGA Tour event practice round, you’ll see the players doing exactly that on each green.

naturally get more loft without having to make major adjustments to your stroke. For more roll, opt for a less-lofted iron. Sometimes it’s easier to roll a ball up onto the green than it is to fly it onto a ledge. Work backward from your target area, and go with the shot that makes the most sense. Remember, chips are fun and they’re not full swings. But they’re not putts, either. They’re kind of a blend and, therefore, require a special technique. Here’s what to focus on. Settle into a relaxed address position and just slightly open your stance by pulling back your left foot. Play the ball back with your hands forward-pressed.

This assures that you make a nice “pop” on the ball. The clubhead should remain low to the ground until a slight—slight— hinge of the wrists brings the club up. Before changing direction, ease up on your hold of the club just a bit. The sensation you want to create is that your hands lead the club back to the ball, but they don’t dominate to the point where they overtake it. The last thing you want in a chip is for the hands to get “wristy” and sling the club into the back of the golf ball. Rather, the hands should lead the club into impact just as they do in a full swing, with the shaft and left forearm properly aligned at the point of contact.

Chevrolet Cobalt Super Sport

Trucks and Imports

AUCTION! AUCTION! AUCTION!

Review and picture by Chad Haire If I told you there is a car that is quicker than an Aston Martin, can out-corner a BMW, gets 32 miles to the gallon and costs less than 25 thousand, you might think I was kidding. If I told you the car is a Chevy Cobalt, you might have me committed! But it’s true . . . except this is not just any Cobalt. It is the Super Sport version and it is sitting at the dealer’s lot right now. To create a Super Sport Cobalt, the factory drops a turbo-charged engine from Pontiac Solstice GXP under the hood, with a healthy 260 horsepower on tap. Then add beefed suspension, bigger wheels/tires, Brembo four-piston brakes and special gauges. They toss in some comfort goodies too, like stereo, satellite radio, air, cruise-control and power

This car has already set a compact sedan race-track record in Germany and after driving it, I can see why. It sticks to the road like glue. The factory claims a 0-60 time of 5.5 seconds and top speed of 160 mph. My 0-60 time was 6.2 seconds, but it was due to the tires smoking from the start; there is just too much power here! The brakes never faded. On the freeway, I got 32 mpg as well. This car is one of the hottest machines on the road, yet it draws very little attention, especially from the traffic cops, so great for those who want to keep a low profile. Great for those who like a good bargain too.

THE ORIGINAL ARIZONA MEN’S EXPO

Big Boys & Their Toys 2009

Visit us online at BigBoysAndTheirToys.com

Q & A with Luke Hart, President & CEO of Big Boys & Their Toys The New Boy in Town Dishes on the Upcoming Expo

You recently took over Big Boys & Their Toys, tell us about what you have planned. Big Boys & Their Toys is Arizona’s largest men’s lifestyle product show showcasing the coolest toys all under one roof. When I took over, my goal was to add new, interactive elements to the expo. We added a number of new features including a video gaming event, a major give away prize for ticket holders, cutting-edge golf and racing simulators, a mix of outdoor sports exhibitors, along with the ever-popular boats, motorcycles, RVs, quads, trailers, bikes and trucks. We wanted to maintain our fun Father’s Day weekend atmosphere for families to enjoy, while increasing the appeal to some of the younger guys that may or may not be bringing Dad. You’ve teamed with the DEVASTATION gaming event, what does that entail? DEVASTATION is a three-day video gaming event that has a huge following. It’s essentially a tournament, and gamers have a chance to win as much as $10,000 in guaranteed prize pots. Anyone is invited to come enjoy as a spectator and also to check out and test their skills at a variety of games for fun. Will there be live entertainment? Yes, there will definitely be live entertainment. Attendees can watch one of the golf contests set up by golf exhibitors, check out the DEVASTATION gaming tournaments throughout the weekend, and on Sunday afternoon, they can watch Terry Davies perform a piano rock tribute to Billy Joel and Elton John.

If you’ve never heard of Terry, be prepared to sing along to his greatest hits performance. The expo is called Big BOYS & Their Toys -- can women attend? Of course! Our show is held over Father’s Day weekend every year, so it draws a lot of families looking for a fun way to spend the day with Dad. And for single women, it can be a great place to bring a date. This year, we’ve even got speed dating going on, for those singles looking to meet a match. What addition to Big Boys & Their Toys are you most excited about? It’s so hard to choose just one. I always love seeing all the cool cars and latest off-road equipment. I’m very excited about the variety of things that will be there, but if I had to name a few, I’m most excited about the addition of the interactive gaming event, I’m also looking forward to testing the Crosswoods golf simulator, and taking a crack at my paintballing skills with Baller’s Arena. Everyone is watching their wallet these days, why should people buy a ticket to Big Boys & Their Toys? I think it’s a great way to beat the heat. What Happens in Vegas – Will Stay in the Hearts of Many Runners will soon be lacing up their running shoes and rocking the Vegas Strip for a very special cause. The inaugural Rock ‘n’ Roll Las Vegas Marathon & Half Marathon powered by Zappos.com to benefit the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation of America will debut on December 6, 2009 with a revamped, glitzy new course.

PURPLE REIGN The Los Angeles Lakers captured their 15th championship and first since 2002 with a 99-86 victory over the Orlando Magic in Game Five of the NBA Finals. Los Angeles won the best-of-seven series 4-1, giving coach Phil Jackson his record 10th championship ring and 11-times All-Star guard Kobe Bryant his fourth. The 30-year-old Bryant paced the Lakers with 30 points and was named

the most valuable player in the finals, the first time he has received the award. When he won his three previous titles (2000-2002), team mate Shaquille O’Neal was named the MVP. Bryant went on to say the criticism that he could not claim the title without the 7-foot-1 center patrolling the paint was “just silly.” However Kobe being Kobe, went out and did his thing, silencing the critics and giving the city of L.A. yet another reason to party the night away.

Is it important to have a separate “Break Cue” for breaking? For me, the most important reason for NOT using my playing cue to break with is tip destruction. When you break a rack of balls, most players hit the cue ball with as much force as possible to get the best spread and hopefully pocket a ball. That is the objective anyway. In doing so, there is a tremendous amount of pressure put on the “leather” tip. The problem is this: That kind of force compresses the leather and creates a flat spot on your tip, which you then use to shoot your game. When you have a flat spot on your tip and it no longer has the proper radius, the cue ball will not go where you expect it to which results in missed shots. When a flat surface (tip) strikes a round surface (cue ball), there is room for error in the way of tip slide. The cue ball can slide along that flat spot during the

stroke and ultimately hit the wrong spot on the object ball and that can result in a missed shot. That means you sit down and give your opponent another chance. You don’t ever want to do that if at all possible. Next time I will discuss the differences between leather, carbon fiber and phenolic tips for breaking and how this new technology can change your break. Until then , remember, stay focused during the Break Shot because you only get one crack at it.

LIFE! SECTION

Once you have uncluttered the home, you may be inspired to decorate – and live a happier, healthier, inspired lifestyle.

LESS IS MORE Many people are turning to Eastern philosophy in order to organize not only their lives, but their homes as well. Feng shui (pronounced “fung shway”) is the ancient Chinese practice of experiencing a space through the senses such as sight, sound, scent, touch, and movement. Feng shui promotes the idea that people should live in harmony and balance with their environment. This balance with the order of the world supposedly attracts fortune and prosperity. Feng Shui continues to grow in popularity in the United States and has been the topic of numerous articles, books, and television shows.

32

Feng shui considers the five elements, which are water, fire, wood, metal and earth. Feng shui means “wind and water.” It incorporates the philosophy of yin and yang, which emphasizes a dynamic balance in human life. Yin is considered feminine and passive energy while yang is considered masculine and active energy. Good health is believed to come from a balance of yin and yang. Feng shui utilizes this principle. The yin-yang symbol has its roots in the ancient Chinese view of nature’s cycles, and originally represented aspects of the mountains. “Yin” represents the female or shaded slope of the June 18th - June 24th, 2009

mountain, including the earth and valleys, darkness, the moon, honor, and peace. “Yang” represents the male or sunlit slopes, as well as heaven, sun, light, vigor, and activity. Feng shui focuses on how chi, or energy, flows through a particular space. People decide the placement of furniture, as well as colors, according to feng shui. People also have different reactions to different colors and their saturations. A person’s experience can be improved by the feel of textures. The feel of a material should play into its choice. Some people believe that arrangement of a living space in a way that aligns with nature draws harmony and good health. Having good lighting is very important. It is a good idea to soften sharp corners in walls and furniture in order to avoid arguments. A clear, open, and well-defined path to the door is desirable. Clearing reminders of your past (aka junk) will help you feel lighter. One way to reduce clutter is to purge the house of things that are no longer needed. Give away or sell items that are in good condition. Throw away the rest. If a house is crowded with stuff, it will look too small. A

clean, clutter-free environment is more attractive than an untidy one. The benefits of organization extend beyond having a nice home, it will also raise the spirits to have a clean environment. Making a conscious decision to prevent clutter saves time and energy in the future. It is important to clear the home of clutter before practicing feng shui.

“So what causes Fear?” The Law of Distraction and InterruptionTM states · Life’s Distractions, if you allow them, will keep you from achieving your goals and dreams. · Interruptions either slow you down or completely stop you from what you set out to accomplish. The causes of fear can vary a great deal. Fear may be caused by a traumatic accident. For example: if you fall into a well and are struggling to get out, you may fear either closed spaces or fear of water. Fear can also be triggered naturally (in essence). You may naturally fear spiders, or heights, not because of a traumatic accident, but because of a natural feeling. •Fear can be either serious or trifling. Serious fear first grows out of some formidable impending peril. Trifling fear arises from being confronted with harm of inconsiderable dimensions, or if there is only a small likelihood.

Be positive. Positive energy attracts positive energy. Health, love, wealth, career, wisdom, reputation, children, and helpful people will all come your way. Thoughts become things – and a clean, open environment will inspire plenty of positive cleaning. More space means more peace of mind. So get moving! Sort through the clutter in your environment and health, wealth and harmony is more than likely just around the corner. •

Physiologic effects of fear can be better understood by understanding the perspective of the sympathetic nervous responses. The sympathetic nervous responses speed up the heart and causes contraction of the blood vessels, as compared to parasympathetic response, which is a more relaxed state: Certain parts of the body may sweat profusely in order to keep the body cool as it is in flight. The muscles tighten in preparation for combat. The senses are sharpened in order to take in vaster quantities of information. Next issue, “So what can you do about facing your Fears?”

identity theft up 22%, hits 5-year high

Leader in I.D. Theft Protection Strikes Back with Protection Offer for All A stunning new survey shows a record 9.9 million Americans were victims of identity theft last year – a shocking 22% increase over the prior year – according to Javelin Strategy & Research. This news mirrors a just-released report from the Federal Trade Commission that cites a 21% increase in identity theft complaints during the same period*. These studies send a clear message: in the wake of the global economic crisis, identity theft is a big business. That’s why LifeLock, the industry leader in identity theft protection, is offering consumers who have a good faith suspicion that they have been a victim, or are about to become a victim of identity theft, a discount on their identity theft protection service. “To take advantage of this special offer, all you have to do is call 1-877-509-1588 and use promo code AZWEEKLY,” said Todd Davis, CEO of LifeLock. “It’s that simple.” Why would you want to protect your identity? Consider some of the Javelin survey’s specific findings: “friendly frauds” are rising, and Costlier. According to the survey, more than one in every ten victims knew the person who stole their identity. Worse yet, these “friendly frauds” went undetected longer and cost consumers who knew the per-

petrator more than double the expenses experienced by victims who didn’t know their identity thief. It also appears identity thieves are moving faster than they used to when it comes to using stolen information. The Javelin survey revealed that incidents of thieves using stolen information within just a week of the theft more than doubled from 33% to 71% over the past three years. “That’s why I feel it’s so important for everyone who needs it to have protection available to them, and why I hope everyone will take advantage of this special discount,” Davis added. how does LifeLock Work? It’s important to point out that no one can stop all identity theft. “But if you have a good faith suspicion that you are at risk of identity theft, what we can do is work to reduce the risk of identity thieves being able to cause LifeLock members harm, even if their information falls into the wrong hands,” Davis said. “It’s a service we back with our $1 Million Total Service Guarantee.” (Restrictions apply. See lifelock.com for details.) LifeLock combines a proactive approach designed to help detect and avoid identity theft, with 24/7 customer care that works to remove the stress and countless hours of trying to repair the damage that usually accompanies identity theft.

$1 miLLion totaL serviCe guarantee If you become a victim of identity theft while a member of LifeLock due to a failure in our service, we will spend up to $1 million to cover the cost for lawyers, investigators, case managers but not any direct losses as a result of the theft. Expression of Self or Fashion Faux Pas, you be the judge.

First off, a high-end fashion guru I’m certainly not. Jeans, T-shirts, Tank tops and flip flops seem to get the job done just fine for me. However, most of us are guilty as we are quick to identify a fashion faux pas when we see one, whether people watching or out and about with family and friends. We’ve all been a part of the fashion patrol every now and then. Whether clashing ensembles, extremely loud outfits, or what may simply appear to be a Halloween costume, there’s always those brave few who clearly aren’t afraid to “do their own thing.” Here for you to enjoy - just a small collection of everyday people who think of clothes as a way to express both themselves - and quite obvious their innermost quirks. This group of prestigious companies and individuals has had a significant impact on the growth and success of the fashion industry in the Valley over the last decade. Planned for September 17th at the Firesky Resort in Scottsdale, it promises to be an evening of glitz, glamour and fun. 1. Reporting on Style: YES Magazine / Arizona Republic. YES is THE place we turn to for our weekly fashion fix and to read about the latest fashions, hottest local designers and shopping in the Valley. In addition, its parent publication, the Arizona Republic, regularly covers fashion, as do other publications underneath the Republic umbrella, including AZ Magazine and AZ Society. 2. Dressing the Valley’s Most Fashionable: Amy Videan, Saks Fifth Avenue. Amy has been in the fashion business for over 25 years. As the director of the Fifth Avenue Club for the last 12 years, she has styled and worked with many of our finest community members and applauded their philanthropic work. Her taste is impeccable as her clients will attest to and her eye for that

perfect style supreme. 3. Bringing Influential Designers to the Valley: Neiman Marcus. Neiman Marcus opened its doors at Scottsdale Fashion Square in 1991, becoming one of the first luxury retailers to come to the Valley. Since opening, they have “wowed” us with their impressive line-up each season of designer personal appearances and trunk shows, including Christian Louboutin, Carolina Herrera and David Yurman. 4. Teaching the Future of Fashion: Judith Everett, Northern Arizona University (NAU). Educating fashion students for over 30 years, Judith is a professor of merchandising at NAU. She has also co-authored three books about fashion and merchandising, including Guide to Producing a Fashion Show, Promotion in a Merchandising Environment and Writing for the Fashion Business. 5. Local Designer Turned International: Kiran Rai, Sir Alistair Rai. As the designer and creative director of Sir Alistair Rai, Kiran creates pieces that reflect her life experiences and cultural history, making a statement with powerful messages. Beginning with t-shirts emblazoned with catchy slogans, celebrities quickly became fans of the line. She has since branched out into ready-to-wear clothing and accessories. The collection is carried at over 500 stores worldwide, including Nordstrom and Selfridges. 6. Fashion Photographer: Ellen Barnes. Ellen has spent over two decades as a fashion photographer, shooting supermodels

like Cindy Crawford, Kim Alexis, Kelly Emberg and more, while working for CPS Direct Marketing in the Valley. Today, a renowned fashion and lifestyle photographer, Phoenix is her home base. 7. She has created 24 original exhibitions, from motorcycle jackets to couture vintage and contemporary fashion, and brought amazing collections to the Valley, including Chado Ralph Rucci last year.

Web Site for Band: www.myspace.com/ alustmord666 Why did this band get started? Lustmord was started to make high quality Death Metal. Do you play cover tunes or originals? We focus on original material, however we have a few select covers in our set list from time to time. But we’re certainly not a cover band. How would you describe your style of music? A grim mixture of Death and Black Metal. Each member brings there own personal style to the group, and we come from backgrounds in such genres… Are you any good? We’re easily one of the best bands in existence today…and as cocky as that sounds…one cannot help the truth. How would you classify your music? Blackened Death Metal. A classic undertaking of everything that is right about America…. What’s the funniest thing that ever happened while performing? Bible burning, blood vomiting, and Rock and Robert doing that 80’s style hip to hip playing while wearing David Lee Roth-like spandex and KISS make up....it hasn’t happened yet...but it will! Who is the craziest band member and why? Dan and Rock are very similar. Dan has seemed to mellow a bit but he still has his tendencies. Rock is a fun character. What do you do different that kicks ass over other bands? We own…simply put... Who gets the most Groupies and why? Well taking one look at any of us and it becomes obvious that we’re all suave mofos…so it’s pretty much like shooting fish in a barrel Tell us a secret about the band: Just because we rock…doesn’t mean we’re made of stone!

This is the place you bought those jeans for!

What advice would you give a startup band? Don’t let others get you down. There are a lot of people that will support bands of all genres. But there are also those that won’t and just because you don’t fit someone’s idea of what is good, or great, or whatever doesn’t mean that you’re not. That being said…not everyone is good or great! BUT if you like what you’re doing then keep doing it! Sooner or later someone else will like it to. What’s the biggest misconception people have about musicians? That being a musician is easy. Real musicians work hard at what they do. It may be a talent that they already have but it’s something that requires a lot of time to make it right. What’s the most difficult aspect of trying to make it in this biz? The only difficult aspect of “making it” is the definition that each person gives the term “making it.” The only limits you have are the ones that you give yourself. What will people see when you perform live? The legend that is Dan Beck, Shadowman (who is a guitarist of distinction), the one and only Rock Rollain grooving it up on the bass, and of course “Mr. Smooth as Velvet” Anthony Lustmord tiptoeing through the tulips.
